Have you heard about the ship that sank in Italy? Most of the passengers got off, but as of January 27, 2012 16 people were dead and 16 people were missing. The worst part was that the Captain abandoned the ship before everyone got off. The ship crashed into a rock and started to sink on its side. The Captain was going toward the shore near Giglio, an island off the coast of Italy. He wanted to salute a retired captain at 10:00 at night! He must have not known or remembered that there is an area full ship. The ship held 4,200 people said of rocks under the water. Those

Tornado Touch-Down By: Elizabeth Hisler On February 29, cold air and hot air struck through each other near Nebraska and Kentucky. Powerful tornados were the result. One of the victims was a little boy. He was sitting in his living room with his Grandma and Grandpa when all of a sudden the wind picked up and the windows cracked. The little boy went airborne through the living room and out the window. But luckily his Grandpa grabbed his leg and caught him.

rocks tore a hole in the hull of the it was 950 feet long. A cook on the ship said it was his first and last cruise. This year is the 100th anniversary of the year the Titanic sank. The Titanic sank on April 12, 1912. The Costa Concordia sank on January 13, 2012. It just happens that January 13th was a Friday, a Friday the 13th! The cruise ship started to sink at 10:40 pm and the Titanic started to sink at 11:40 pm. Do you agree that the Captain is responsible for the accident?

Do you have a parent or know someone with contact lenses? By: Carolina Suaid & Caroline Collins Well , guess what? We have just heard of an elephant that got fitted with a giant contact lens. The elephant scratched the cornea on the side of her left eye on December 26, from another elephant in the zoo! Every time she blinked, it got worse. This could have even caused her to lose her sight! Thankfully, her very caring zookeepers found a veterinarian who had experience putting a contact lens in a horse, although never in an elephant. Luckily, she was able to numb the eye and put the lens in. Guess how big the lens was? It was eight times bigger than the usual size! Think of that poor elephant who had to stand there for a whole hour while that was done. Most importantly, she is okay and her contact lens operation was successful. Caroline would like to add that she has contact lenses and they bother her so much. She can’t imagine how they would feel for an elephant.

Super Bowl Injuries By: Clay Garrett and Grace Sperber Super Bowls over the years have been among the most popular games in America. Although football is a dangerous sport, and many injuries have occurred throughout the game, players still look forward to the final match. In Super Bowl XLVI, several players from both teams were injured before and during the game: Mark Herzich (currently linebacker for the New York Giants) Before the match he did not play since he sprained his ankle in a tackle with one of the players from the New Orleans Saints. Despite this injury he still played in the Super Bowl. Rob Gronkowski (currently a tightend for the New England Patriots) Patriots fans were scared when they saw one of their top players in a walking boot after suffering an ankle injury. Fortunately for the Patriot fans, he was in shape for the big game. We hope you enjoyed our article and are interested in watching the Super Bowl next year.

Lucho Kidnapped and Released By: Alice Adams On June 10, 2001 my mother’s cousin Luis “Lucho” Eladio Perez, a Colombian Senator, was kidnapped by the F.A.R.C. Guerrillas. Lucho was held for seven years. The F.A.R.C kidnapped him because they wanted to exchange him for members of their own group who were imprisoned by the Colombian government. He was the first of thirty political hostages, including Colombian senators, representatives, a presidential candidate and three Americans. Lucho was kept in the jungle where he was fed rice, beans, and pasta. The F.A.R.C did not let him do anything, but he did like the birds. His life there was very boring. Lucho escaped on a rainy night. He swam in a river for two hours. When he left the camp he did not bring many supplies, so it was hard to survive. After five days he turned himself in to the F.A.R.C because he was sick. Lucho was finally freed February 28, 2008 with four other political hostages when Venezuelan president Hugo Chavrez negotiated to free hostages with health issues. That’s how Lucho was freed!

Synchronized Swimming By: Jacqueline Prata Synchronized swimming is like ballet in the water. It is a complex sport which involves good swimming skills, timing and a fair amount of flexibility. Lots of girls do it. Competitions are called “meets.” Up to eight girls can swim in a team routine; otherwise, there are solos, duets, and trios. I am on a team called the New Canaan Aquaianas. This is a competitive team that works together to create a swim routine to music. Our duets and trios are swum to music from Aladdin. Synchronized swimming became an Olympic sport in 1984. Look for it the next time you watch the Olympics!

Pig Fundraiser By Elodie Nix Have you ever thought about reading non-stop for a week? Well, on Tuesday, February 14th, 2012, more than 400 students at Fairborn Elementary finished reading a total of 84,841 hours in 1 week, raising over $7000 to buy new books. These kids did this as schoolwide fundraiser. They had made a bet that if they read and raised a lot, Assistant Principal Vicki Hudelph would have to kiss a pig. And, as it turned out, she did have to kiss a little black pig — because the students won the bet! This was very exciting for the kids to watch. Should we ask Dr. Marr to kiss a pig if we do this fundraiser!?!

R & B Concert Field Trip By: Eva Iannaccone

Making Valentines with Prayer Buddies

On Tuesday, February 7th, the 3rd and 4th grade went to a “Powerful Women in R & B” concert. A lady named Denise Thomas (whose sister Carla Thomas is a singer) sang R & B songs made famous by powerful women such as Etta James, Aretha Franklin and many more. She tried to get us to understand what power we have by singing. The concert was held at Lincoln Center in NYC , and everyone had a great time at this inspiring event..

The fourth graders have the youngest members of the Lower School as their prayer buddies. We have lots of fun making each other smile, drawing pictures, getting lots of hugs, and making Valentines for service men and women, the people who help our country. Victoria Mordaunt in PK and I are prayer buddies. We made a valentine, (very colorful) and drew hearts all around the sides of our picture. We all had lots of fun, and I hope we will put smiles on the soldiers’ faces! I enjoyed making them and hope to do it again!
