Cub Chronicles Welcome Home By: Mairead O’Connor Last month, the students returned to Convent of the Sacred Heart [CSH] for the 2012-13 school year. Over the summer the CSH Lower School underwent renovations. It was exciting for the girls to see the new classrooms, lift-top desks, carpeting and the new bathrooms. The classrooms feel great. Coming back to school in September is always exciting. It is a lot of fun seeing old friends and making new ones. One thing that I love about coming back to school is seeing the “Welcome Home” sign at the school entrance. CSH does feel like home to me. Also everyone was happy to see Mrs. Festa back in school this year. We all missed her very much. Welcome home, Mrs. Festa.

The Benefits of a Uniform

New Classrooms

This summer the Lower School had some classrooms re-done! The new classrooms have big white boards, new desks, carpeting, new supplies, and next year there will be air conditioning! I love the new rooms. We all thank Mrs. Hayes and the Board of Trustees! The rooms feel so much bigger! ! Do you like the new classrooms?

Over the summer it was nice to put on fun clothes or bathing suits. Now we’re back in school and wearing uniforms. Not everybody likes uniforms, but it’s kind of nice to have one. One benefit would be: Not putting together a new outfit every day. Another would be you don’t have to be picked on about what you wear. The last one would be that you don’t have to wish for something you don’t have. For example, if your friend has a cute bracelet you don’t have to wish for one. Those are some benefits of having a uniform.

This summer my family and I travelled to Africa. I was so excited to have the opportunity to visit our sister school in Uganda. It took us a long time to travel there as the airplane flights were many hours and the roads in Uganda are very different than the ones here. My family and I spent two days at Sacred Heart and stayed with the nuns who live there. They cooked us wonderful meals and were so kind. It was thrilling to meet all the girls in the lower and middle schools and have a tour of their beautiful school. They were so nice and excited to meet me, too! They sang songs for us, and I shook almost all of their hands. I think there were over 500 students! There were many signs at the school thanking CSH Greenwich for all that we do to help them. It made me feel very proud to be part of this wonderful CSH family. I spent a lot of time with the 3rd and 4th graders and presented them with the book that my 3rd grade classmates last year put together with letters and artwork. And, guess what, they have their Mater painting in the cafeteria! Although there were things that were similar to our school, there were even more things that were different. The girls have to go to a special part of the campus to get clean water to wash themselves. They also have a small farm with chickens and cows, and they supply all the eggs and milk for the school. The girls also say a lot of prayers at different times of the day. Since they all live at school, they wear many different uniforms during the day and even gave me one as a gift! The girls sleep in dormitories which have rows of bunk beds, and they sleep in rooms according to their age. The students have the greatest smiles I’ve ever seen! It was a fantastic trip, and I hope to go back one day.

Pop Art Soup Cans

Famous Rome!

By: Maia van Biesen

By: Isabelle Pipher

In early September, Target started selling Campbell’s tomato soup cans in bright colors. They were selling them in memory of famous pop artist Andy Warhol and the 50th anniversary of his piece, “32 Campbell’s Soup Cans.” On the cans they put some of Andy Warhol’s famous quotes. For example, “Pop art is for everyone.” Also, at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, an Andy Warhol exhibition opened on September 18. You can see “Big Campbell’s Soup Can, 19 cents” in the exhibition.

Pizza and Pizzas

Rome is one of the greatest cities! Rome is a place where you can really get to know history. I spent 4 hours every day touring Rome. I saw the Vatican, Pantheon, The Mouth of Truth, Trevi Fountain and many more amazing places. One of the biggest and certainly the oldest, the Colosseum, was built in 72 A.D. I thought Rome was the kind of place where history would not be fun. Not at all – it was so interesting! Our tour guide had videos and cool apps about Rome. One of my favorite places was the beautiful Whaling Trevi Fountain! It had sculptures and water splashing in By: Alexia Barr every way. If you throw a coin in backwards you get to return to Rome again! One other amazing place I saw was Did you know that some Japanese fishermen are the Spanish Steps. Mitt Romney By: Gabby Finn

Me: Voter: Me: Voter: Me: Voter:

Why do you think Romney will be a good president? Because he ran a company and is organized. He will motivate people. What did Obama do to give Mitt Romney your vote? He should have created more jobs. Instead he made healthcare his focus. As time goes on, do you think you will change your vote? I am waiting to hear the debate on October 3rd.

U.S. Open By: Grace Coale

The U.S. Open is one of the four Grand Slam tournaments. It takes place in awesome N.Y. at the end of August for two weeks every year. All of the top tennis players in the world come to compete. I went to the U.S. Open two times this year and discovered how much there is to do. I started out by going to see some matches. I was able to see all the players I see on TV like Victoria Azarenka, Maria Sharapova, Sloane Stephens, Samantha Stosur, Ana Ivanovic, Roger Federer, and David Ferrer. When you watch the match in person it’s so fast and entertaining. After watching all the matches and walking around, I was ready to eat! You can walk over to the humongous food court where there are tables all around. You can keep up with the matches by watching the big screen while you are eating. To finish off your day you might like to do some shopping. There is a great selection from t-shirts to hats to key chains to teddy bears to sportswear. A fan favorite seems to be the huge tennis ball for collecting autographs and if you are lucky you might get an autograph. The US Open was a great experience! Earthquake in Old Greenwich

Peak Physique

By: Samantha Novak

Did you know there was an earthquake in Old Greenwich a few weeks ago???? Well there was. It was on Friday night September 7th at around 9:00 pm. It was a 2.1 magnitude earthquake. The size of an earthquake is measured on something called the Richter Scale, which has a range from 0 - 9, though there is no real upper limit. It is very rare to have earthquakes in Connecticut. However, as Greenwich lies on a fault line, we may get more earthquakes in the future!!!!

Peak Physique is a gym in Greenwich, Connecticut. It’s a gym where people work out, learn to eat healthy and stay in great shape. If you come to Peak for your very first time, the owner will give you a tour and talk about what they do. They train kids to grow strong and healthy and also train them for their sport. They train adults as well. The sessions are for an hour. The more you come, the stronger and healthier you get. Everyone there is so nice! And it’s a really fun place to go.

I didn’t feel it……… DID YOU?

Miracle Dog By Lily Santangelo

My dog Oscar is truly a miracle dog. Oscar had a heart attack when he was 12 and I was in second grade. Oscar fainted after he walked up the stairs. We took him to an animal hospital. He just got worse and worse. Oscar was in the hospital for more than 10 days. We were prepared for bad news but to our surprise Oscar survived. He will be 15 years old this December. Some people don’t believe in miracles, but I do!

4th Grade Overnight Trip By: Isabella Quinson

Costa Concordia

During the last week of school the 4th grade had an overnight trip. On this trip the 4th grade went to Sprout Creek for their first activity. Then they had a barbecue dinner on campus. After that they had a swim in the pool and saw a movie in the theater! Then the 4th grade got to sleep at school! In the morning we played field and rope games in the gym. Then we had surprise activities in art and science. The 4th grade girls had a wonderful time!!

Have you heard about the ship that sank in Italy? Most of the passengers got off, but as of January 27, 2012 16 people were dead and 16 people were missing. The worst part was that the Captain abandoned the ship before everyone got off. The ship crashed into a rock and started to sink on its side. The Captain was going toward the shore near Giglio, an island off the coast of Italy. He wanted to salute a retired captain at 10:00 at night! He must not have known or remembered that there is an area full of rocks under the water. Those rocks tore a hole in the hull that was 950 feet long. A cook on the ship said it was his first and last cruise. This year is the 100th anniversary of the year the Titanic sank. The Titanic sank on April 12, 1912. The Costa Concordia sank on January 13, 2012. It just happens that January 13th was a Friday, a Friday the 13th! The cruise ship started to sink at 10:40 pm and the Titanic started to sink at 11:40 pm. Do you agree that the Captain is responsible for the accident?
