Welcome Back!

By: Bella Adams Welcome back to school, everyone! I hope you had a great summer I know I did. You may have noticed that the classrooms have air conditioning to cool down after recess and P.E. We also have robots that are really cool. We can program them to move and say things! You may have also noticed that we have… BOYS! Don’t worry, it’s ONLY in preschool and they are so cute!. Also fourth graders have been talking about the spring overnight being changed, but there will still be lots of fun on those two days, even though we’re not going to sleep at the school. I hope everybody has a great year. And once again, welcome back!

The Cup Song

“The Cup Song” has been spreading from school to school. Almost everyone knows it and loves it. For those of you who don’t know what “The Cup Song” is, it is doing a hand motion with a cup while singing “The Cup Song.” It is from a very popular movie called “Pitch Perfect.” For some reason teachers don’t like students singing it at school.

Why do the kids like it?

Kids like it because it allows them to break away from school, to daydream and talk with friends.

But why don’t the teachers like it?

Teachers think it is distracting to the students. And if something is distracting, you don’t pay attention. Plus, doing it during school distracts other students. The teachers at CSH and other schools have put an end to singing it during class. Yet they do let students sing “The Cup Song” during recess.

I would rather the teachers let us sing “The Cup Song” all day, but I am glad that they at least allow us to do it during recess.

When you think of Halloween you likely think of going around in costumes and getting free candy. The history of Halloween is very different. This is what really happened. A long time ago, in the eighth century, Halloween was a holiday filled with celebration and superstition.

The people would celebrate in the evening.

Originally people on Halloween night would light big bonfires and wear costumes in order to send away any spirits or any ghosts who happened to be roaming. In the eighth century, Pope Gregory declared that on November 1st it would be a time to honor all saints. (All Saints Day) The evening before All Saints Day was known as All Hollow’s Eve, and later Halloween. Much later over the years Halloween turned into a big community event with kids and even pets involved in activities like trick or treating or decorating houses or jack-o-lanterns. Now I hope you

Two girls convinced their dad, Choon Ng, that he should try to make rubber band bracelets and sell them. He tried going to a bunch of different toy stores and none of them wanted the product. Then he made a bunch of you tube videos and people started watching them. Then, the stores wanted to buy Rainbow Loom!!! A man who works at a store called Learning Express ordered 24 Rainbow Looms!!!

They were all sold out two days after he put them in the store!!

This year at the Fall Festival the fourth graders will be working a Rainbow Loom booth!! I hope you can come!!

Being a Fourth Grader!

Younger students look up to fourth graders. I know because I’ve been at this school since preschool. I’ve looked up to fourth graders because they are the oldest grade and the leaders of lower school. Fourth graders get to do Volcanos, join Future Problem Solving and get sketch books in art. You also get to be a cantor, and be the leaders in the play. Finally you get to be a newspaper writer. Being a fourth grader is hard work, but I’m glad I’m one!

Do you like CSH? “Yes, everyone is very nice.”

What do you like to do in your free time? “I like to read and do cross stitch” Why did you decide to come to CSH? “I wanted to work in a school library and CSH is a very nice school.”

Where were you before? “I was a children’s librarian at Darien Library.”

What is your favorite book? “I like so many books. I really like In the Year of the Boar and Jackie Robinson. I read it in 3rd and 4th grade. I really liked it and recommend it.

How come you wanted to be a librarian? “I like to read and work with students.”

When is your birthday? “November 24th, so sometimes it’s on Thanksgiving. I like stuffing. I’m 30 years old.”

What do you want to change about CSH? “I don’t know, I think things are pretty good.”

Is there anything you would like people to know about?

“There is going to be a 4th Grade Book Club, starting in October, that will meet twice a month during lunch in the library.

We will eat lunch and talk about books. At the first meeting we will choose a book for November. There is also going to be the Birthday Book Program for anyone in lower school. Parents may send in an envelope with a little money, and I will help the birthday girl choose a book which will have a book plate with her name on it. The birthday girl gets to be the first one to borrow the book. If you have a summer birthday you can pick out a book in January or February. It should be a book people will love for years and years.”

Anything else? Remember, you’re always welcome in the library!

Palmetto Bluff, South Carolina is a really nice place to visit. You can either rent houses or cottages at the Inn at Palmetto Bluff. There is a little town where you can get food or rent bikes. The best way to get around is by bike. There are great bike trails everywhere. One trail takes you to a park with a house and a great zip-line.

There is a really fun club, where everyone goes.

It has a pool, a snack bar and a place to eat dinner called the Canoe Club. On the pool deck there are fun games like ping-pong, chess, and a pool table. Next to the pool is a big boathouse, with all sorts of boats. You can go canoeing or kayaking. One of the best things to do is take a boat ride on the May River. We had a great boat driver named Captain Boo. He was really nice and he even let us drive the boat. It was so cool driving the boat. He also took us to a dock where we went shrimping. Right next to the dock was a five-story tree house. We climbed all the way to the top. On the way to the tree house or back you might see dolphins.

On certain nights of the week you can go to the Inn and roast marshmallows and make s’mores.

It was really fun and yummy.

Another activity we enjoyed was the camp. We made volcanoes and they erupted. We fed all sort of animals. We went to the five-story tree house in a golf cart. It was so fun.

Palmetto Bluff is a really fun place to visit. I would definitely recommend it.

If you’re interested in an exciting book you should read Drizzle. The author is Kathleen Van Cleve, and this book is good for grades 3-5. If you read this book, I hope you love it.

Run for Uganda By: Regina Finn

This year the fall festival is October 19th. Before all the games start, there will be a run or walk for our sister school in Uganda. All people all welcome. The entry fee is $25 per person but if you are forming a team (like fourth grade) it will be a team fee of $100. We hope that we will be able to raise enough money to cover expenses for school tuition for students of our sister school. Tuition is usually $600 per student and to some families this is a lot of money. Forming a team like fourth grade will be great because all of the kids either new or old will interact with others and get to know their classmates out of the classroom. It should be a fun way to kick off the fall festival.
