Alumnae Au Courant October 2017
New Upper School Head Appointed for July 2018 Jenn Phelan Bensen H '15 will serve as the next Head of the Upper School beginning July 2018. In a letter to the Sacred Heart community Pamela Juan Hayes '64 said, "Jenn has been an experienced educator for 32 years and a highly effective communicator whose strength lies in building relationships with colleagues as well as students and their families. Whether motivating Upper School students on the playing field as a coach, mediating parent/teacher conferences, or leading a crossfunctional and diverse Formation to Mission team, Jenn always promotes inclusivity, honesty and understanding. As an independent school educator, she believes in the holistic development of each student and challenges them to be engaged citizens, articulate critical thinkers, and compassionate community members." We thank Jayne Collins H '11 for her leadership as Head of the Upper School for 18 years. Jayne will remain at Sacred Heart as the Dean of Faculty and Curriculum. From the Archives
This was our very first school in the United States: six small rooms and one fireplace surrounding a hallway. The house was located just outside the village of St. Charles, Missouri. It opened on September 14, 1818 and was the first free school west of the Mississippi River. Photo is from The Society of the Sacred Heart in North America. Louise Callan, RSCJ.
