Who’s on your musical bucket list? I’ve always had a list of artists that I passionately wanted to see in my life, and I am incredibly thankful that a lot of them have already played the Caribbean Sea Jazz Festival. However, my list is still long and fortunately getting longer all the time. Hey, even some artists that were once on my ‘duck it’-list have made my bucket list. This is because I believe that an open mind is a joy forever. It’s thanks to open-minded music lovers that this festival is now celebrating its 8th edition, and that we’re still continuing to grow in this quest to unite people through the power of music and culture. The festival’s successful move to Renaissance Festival Plaza is a shining example. We can now give it to you bigger and better, right between the palm trees and the Caribbean Sea. Plus: this year’s line-up is our best ever. Attention has never been higher internationally, and is still growing locally. We’re taking our adventure to the next level, and we would be honored if you would join us. A great place to start would be the festival’s Friday Latin Night, which successfully made its debut in 2013. This night will immerse you in a dazzling blend of cultures, which is one of Aruba’s greatest attractions besides the Natural Bridge, Casibari Rock Formation and our beaches. The Latin Night might restore our relationship with Venezuela at the same time.

4

And Saturday night, wow. Saturday we’re gonna funk it up with a jazzy zing. If you are ready to party (like it’s 1999), you don’t want to miss it. History will be made once again. I would like to end on a very serious note. Many doctors on our island have told me that yearly, too many people suffer from the terrible D.I.D.G.T.C.S.J.A.M.F.A.L.A.M.B.I.M.S.G.M.syndrome (Damn, I Didn’t Go To Caribbean Sea Jazz And My Friends Are Laughing At Me Because I Missed So Much Great Music.) Thankfully, there’s a remedy: party with us both nights, have an unforgettable time and cross a few of those amazing artists off your bucket list. Music, unity, love and good health! Erik Eman Festival Director

Dear Jazz Enthusiast, Aruba was a trendsetter for jazz festivals in the Caribbean. Starting in 1988, Aruba was the playground for the crème de la crème in the world of jazz and Latin music, hosting four consecutive weekends of amazing performances. Today, it is the host of several music festivals throughout the year. The Caribbean Sea Jazz Festival, now in its 8th edition, presents an extravaganza of good music with a backdrop of culinary adventures, art expositions in a totally relaxed and island chic atmosphere. The festival presents legendary artists such as Prince Royce and Liv Warfield, a selection of regional artists and our own accomplished professional musicians that will make us all proud. I acknowledge the importance of collaborative work between local and international artists and as always, I'm happy to see a fair share of our young upcoming artists getting their space in this music scene. After all, Aruba is a habitat for talent in all genres of music. From jazz to Latin, soul, funk and our own local rhythms, you will be immersed with good music and an ambiance that will keep you coming back every year. Enjoy the festival! Otmar Oduber Minister of Tourism, Transportation and Labor

Welcome/Bon Bini!

What a pleasure it is to welcome you to the 8th edition of the Caribbean Sea Jazz Festival. Get ready to enjoy three stages packed with top-notch music, plus Aruba’s unique atmosphere, a great food court and numerous bars. A phenomenal line-up of local and international artists is about to entertain you on October 3 and 4. World famous names, upcoming stars and local talent will make this a weekend to remember forever. For the second year, the festival will be held at the Renaissance Festival Plaza; a location and a name that are synonymous with first-class island hospitality. It was Shakespeare who said that music is the food of love. We agree, but want to add that food greatly benefits the love of music. Which is why you can enjoy plenty of great bites. The cozy food court terrace offers mouthwatering menu items from

10

nine participating restaurants, as well as great views of the Padu stage. As any musician will confirm, when the music and the climate get as hot as during the CSJF, there is nothing more important than proper hydration. This is why there are bars all over the festival grounds, serving a range of delicious refreshments. (Pro tip: when you find yourself unable to applaud an artist because of the drink in your hand, just shout ‘whoooo’ or ‘yeah’.) And as if feasting your ears and your tastebuds weren’t enough, you can also feast your eyes on a great exhibition of local art at the festival’s art gallery. We really can’t recommend it enough, since we are convinced that you’ll find Aruba’s visual artists just as impressive as its musical talents. We are honored, humbled and incredibly excited to welcome you. Enjoy!

History Although the organizers prefer looking ahead to looking back, the rich history that the festival has already made since its humble beginnings in 2007 deserves mentioning. What was the spark that originally ignited this project? The festival started in the mind of organizer Erik Eman. A musician himself, and music lover through and through, Erik was sorely missing the successful annual Aruba Jazz & Latin Music Festival that had taken place from 1986 untill 2001. After years of draught, a similar festival was badly needed on the island. Having lived in The Hague for many years, Erik was heavily inspired by the phenomenal Dutch North Sea Jazz Festival, once created by the legendary Paul Ackett. With tons of hard work and a very modest budget, Erik and his passionate team set out to bring the spirit of that festival to Aruba. And they pulled it off. Over the past seven editions, the event has consistently grown every year, and has managed to attract visitors from all over the world. The roster of artists that has graced the festival’s stage is dazzling. Famous featured performers such as George Benson, José James, El Gran Combo de Puerto Rico, Willy Garcia, Gualao, Chaka Khan, Oscar D’Leon, Fourplay, Randy

Brecker, Pete Philly, Sven Hammond Soul, Kuenta I Tambu, Angie Stone, Eddie Palmieri, Candy Dulfer, Richard Bona, Raul Midon, Tango Extremo, Marcus Miller, Issac Delgado, Michel Camilo, David Sanborn, Izaline Calister, Randal Corsen, The Ploctones, Moon Baker, Anacaona, Praful, Cubop City Big Band, Cosy Cotton and many more have made the Caribbean Sea Jazz Festival a truly international event of the highest caliber. Local artists performing at the Caribbean Sea Jazz have included Armin Solognier, MichelAngelo, Rincon Boys, Time Banditsz, Flame, Lee Connor, Idyllmist, Delbert Bernabela, Johnny Scharbaay, Ivan Jansen, Carlos Bislip, El Prove, and young talents such as Live Xpression, Bambu, Sergio Jansen, Data Panik, Wild Fire, and of course: the SMRW Ensemble that kicks off the festivities each year. When the steam train was first invented in the late 18th century, many people thought that the apex of technology had been reached. Look it up on your smartphone. With that in mind, we realize that the festival is still in its early stages and firmly believe that the best is yet to come. So jump aboard the CSJF train and take the journey with us!

LIV WARFIELD & NEW POWER GENERATION HORNZ SATURDAY OCTOBER 4 – 9:00PM PADU STAGE

Liv Warfield & NPG Hornz LiV Warfield (35) is a native to Peoria, Illinois (USA) and grew up in a religious family where she was mainly influenced by gospel music. During her years studying at the Portland State University (she was an excellent track & field athlete) she started singing karaoke. Some of her musical heroines like Nina Simone, Etta James, Tina Turner, Sade and Mary J. Blige inspired her to explore her own singing talents. LiV first joined a hip-hop band, followed by joining a soul/jazz band featuring keyboard performer Joey Porter before starting her own band, LiV & The Warfield Project.

Since becoming a member of the New Power Generation, LiV credits Prince as her ultimate music mentor. Her latest album The Unexpected, was released early 2014. LiV had the support of Prince as her Executive Producer of this new album, but wanted her to take full control of its production. Watch her first music video for this album’s first single “Why Do You Lie” . LiV Warfield & New Power Generation Hornz will definitely add color and rock-flavor to the Caribbean Sea Jazz Festival 2014.

CANDY DULFER SATURDAY OCTOBER 4 – 11:30PM – PADU STAGE

In 1988, Funky Stuff was booked as the supporting act for three Prince concerts in the Netherlands. Prince canceled the supporting act, but invited Dulfer on stage to play an improvised solo. After this encounter, she starred in the video of the single “Partyman” (1989), where Prince sings: When I need trombone, my dog is Handy. But when I want sax, I call Candy. This appearance led to session work with Eurythmics guitarist and producer Dave Stewart, who gave Dulfer a credit on “Lily Was Here”, reaching #6 in the UK singles chart, #1 in the Dutch radio charts and #11 on the Billboard Hot 100 in the USA in 1990.

CANDY DULFER Candy Dulfer (45) is a popular Dutch smooth jazz alto saxophonist. She started to play saxophone at the age of six. Her debut album Saxuality (1990) received a Grammy Award nomination. She has performed and recorded songs with renowned musicians, such as her father, famous saxophonist Hans Dulfer, Prince, Dave Stewart, Pink Floyd, Van Morrison and Maceo Parker.

In 1982, when she was twelve years old, she played as a member of Rosa King’s Ladies Horn section at the North Sea Jazz Festival in The Hague. According to Dulfer, King encouraged her to become a band leader herself. In 1984, at the age of fourteen, Dulfer started her own band Funky Stuff. In 1987, the band performed as opening act at two concerts of Madonna’s European tour.

In 2007, she released her ninth studio album Candy Store. The album reached a #2 position in Billboard’s Top Contemporary Jazz charts. Of the album Candy Store, the song “L.A. City lights” reached a #1 position in National Airplay charts in the United States. In 2011 Dulfer performed at the Caribbean Sea Jazz Festival and is back on stage in Aruba on October 4th at the 2014 CSJ festival. Bona comes from a musical family and began learning to play the guitar at age 11. In 1980 aged just 13, he assembled his first ensemble for a French jazz club in Douala, the largest city of Camaroon. Bona became successful on bass guitar and moved to Paris in 1989 and to New York in 1995, establishing in these two

cities a reputation as one of the most exciting jazz bass players on the planet. He held a professorship of jazz music at New York University and worked with legendary jazz musicians such as George Benson and Chaka Khan.

Bona has performed on many world stages, jazz clubs and international music festivals, from Tokyo to the Caribbean.

His musical styles vary from Latin Jazz to Cameroonian pop music. “I come from a different place, a place where music has to be describing a story,” says Bona. GUALAO FRIDAY OCTOBER 3 – 11:45PM – PADU STAGE

GRUPO GUALAO Grupo Gualao is an innovative musical proposal which presents an ancestral force with magical stage/scene interpretative qualities, anteceded by its creator’s and director’s trajectory of over twenty years. Gualao is a new rhythm created from Guaneña y Currulao, which correspond, respectively, to the Colombian coast and southern Nariño sierra. The Gualao dynamics proceed from a research project presented at the University of Nariño titled “The Interpretative Importance of the Six

18

Eighths and the Pentatonic Scale in Afro-Latin Music and its influence in Jazz” (“Importancia interpretative del seis octavos y la escala pentatónica en la música afro Latina y su influencia en el jazz”). Presented as a creative recital, it received the institution’s highest honor “Laureated Thesis” (“Thesis laureada”) due to its increased creative and composition content, coupled with its musical interpretation. This musical represents a solution to the interpretive dilemma of indigenous

music of the Americas such as samba, salsa, cumbia and jazz. It establishes that the writing of these expressions are imprinted from the conceptions of European classical music, without regard to the ancestral African magic. Hence, a new musical paradigm is presented where these disconnected concepts are united into a single language. Gualao is to be considered as a “new means of listening and understanding music”. The group has thirteen musicians.

DOWN TOWN DIXIE SOCIETY SATURDAY OCTOBER 4 – 8:00PM – DIVI STAGE

DOWN TOWN DIXIE SOCIETY It all started at the University of Hospitality in Maastricht, the Netherlands. Founders of this special band were all students with a shared love for swinging music and entertainment. Besides studying, they loved partying around. And, they still do! From 1992 onwards the band played with a great regularity at various kinds of parties and festivals. To ensure that all these performances were well organised, the band took on a manager: Frans Angenent. Throughout the years the band also gained international fame. During the last of many years the band has done shows all over the Netherlands at practically every kind of festival imaginable: private

parties, weddings, Jazz festivals, city promotions, fairs and company parties. Also abroad, far from home, the band did his Dutch performances: Germany, Belgium, France, USA, Italy, Bahrein, Dubai, Oman, Luxembourg, Curacao, Aruba, Bonaire, St. Maarten, Suriname. A flexible attitude and an absolutely focus on the audience, make it possible to perform for both small groups (with a minimum of 3,5 people) as well as for big crowds.

The Down Dixie Society is (totally) different from other traditional bands of the same genre, through its choice of repertoire: swinging music that’s easy to listen to and appealing to a large audience of young(er) and old(er) people. Moreover, the band is capable of turning every party into ‘a happening’. On request they also play the Blues and specific ‘party music’. “Is there a singer in the hall? Please, join us on stage”.

Although the majority of the founding members is still active in the band, the Down Town Dixie Society has been enforced by several other musicians.

The way in which the band presents itself on stage is everything but traditional; it’s festive, enthusiastic, and entertaining. The Down Town Dixie Society enthuses the audience and brings the party to a climax.

The success formula: swinging music and entertainment on one stage

‘N Fuzion

FRIDAY OCT 3 – 00:45AM – PURPLE STAGE ‘N Fuzion is a brand new name in the music scene on the island of Aruba. Carefully put together by bandleader Ofo Escudero, former founder of famous Aruban band Tsunami, ‘N Fuzion had is first performance in November 2013. In only a few months time the local audience embraced ‘N Fuzion for their unique musical style, performed by 13 Aruban musicians and a DJ.

Bringing a fusion of live music, a DJ, electronic sounds and ‘uncommon’ instruments like accordion mixed with today’s hits and popular musical styles such as Salsa, Bachata, Merengue, Soca, Calypso and House, 'N Fuzion holds truth to their name. Band members also differ in age, ranging from a nineteen year old conga player to a fifty year old trombonist, all mixed together positively influencing each other and delivering a fresh sound. Make sure not to miss their performance during the Caribbean Sea Jazz Festival!

Beyond the music: what the CSJF does to invest in Aruba Aruba is a gorgeous island, which is why we should all make an effort to keep it that way. The Caribbean Sea Foundation is aware of the need to continue to invest is a greener island, and in the cultural development of our youth. Since actions speak louder than words, we have decided to actually do something about it - together with some of the festival artists, who have gracefully lent a hand. Check out some of the initiatives.

Donates a private concert to Aruba’s eco-smartest students We’ve challenged the school kids of Aruba to find a solution for the pollution caused by the millions of plastic bags that customers receive in practically every shop. You see these bags (f)lying around all over our beautiful Island. The school class with the best plan will be rewarded with a private mini concert of Prince Royce himself. Now there’s a win-win situation! However, we’re not letting the kids do all the work. Together with the Renaissance Aruba Resort & Casino, we are going to make sure that our festival site will not produce any pollution whatsoever. We will prevent plastic cups from blowing into the sea by placing nets around the festival plaza and by making plenty of garbage containers available. Help us make it an even greener edition than the last one.

Inspiring workshops for people of all ages What do you get when you cross three amazing saxophone players dressed in wacky clothes, a crazy dancing drummer and a killer upright bass player, have them sing songs about buses, roaches and hockey, and let them spend half their time playing in the audience? The Shuffle Demons, that's what! In Canada, the US and Europe, they are famous for their clinics for kids and music students, and now they are bringing their improvisation workshops to Aruba, especially for the CSJF. It’s a crazy, musical and above all inspiring experience. Don’t miss it. Check Facebook and newspapers for details.

A special DJ workshop for aspiring Aruban mixologists Jazzanova are a Berlin-based production collective consisting of some of the world’s most skilled DJ’s and producers. Their love for deep jazz and modern beats has led their music to become a stunning amalgamation of retro and new sounds that echoes almost all musical styles from house, hiphop and afrofunk to drum & bass, boogie, brazil, Latin, and soul. One of these internationally acclaimed artists, DJ Jürgen von Knoblauch, is coming to the Festival to close down the event with a groovy DJ-set and a spontaneous jam session after party thang. He is also willing to share his incredible skills in a special DJ-workshop for all the talented spin doctors and mixomaniacs on Aruba. Are you willing and able to learn something? Masterrr! Contact 5925185 for more info.

The soul star returns to share her knowledge Last year, funky diva Giovanca visited St. Franciscus College for a couple of awesome workshops. Giovanca is not only an internationally acclaimed soul singer; she is also a professional remedial teacher. Aruba loves Gio and Gio loves Aruba; that’s why she will return this year. Not to perform at the festival (well, she might just DJ at your favorite nightspot during the festival week) but to share her knowledge and passion with Aruba’s youth. In collaboration with UNOCA, a special workshop in Dutch and Papiamento will be organized at one of Aruba’s schools.

SYNERGY BETWEEN “JAZZ MUSIC” AND “VISUAL ARTS”

The relationship between music and the visual arts, two elements that nourish the soul, in their creation and appreciation, has long been recognized not only by intellectuals but by all levels of art lovers in our society. Scholars have long reflected on those aspects of culture involved in the world of music and art sciences. They have studied the relationship between the two arts and their mutual elements of creativity, enjoying them in conjunction. The common man, even though, not conscious, have found that the contemplation of a beautiful work of art is enhanced while listening to music that seems appropriate. Invariably, art gallery openings are often orchestrated by music, which sets the mood and

38

harmonizes with the work of the artist. The Caribbean Sea Jazz Art Gallery has invited local and some international artists to display their paintings, sculptures, and poetries during the Caribbean Sea Jazz Festival. There will be some auctions during the exhibition. There will be extra treats, artists will get together to create a few artworks on the spot and surprise jam sessions. We invite you to come and feast your senses, enjoy the ambiance, and feed your soul!

UNOCA stands firmly behind the Caribbean Sea Jazz Festival UNOCA, since 1986, is a foundation with the main goal to stimulate cultural development of Aruba. With its support to the Caribbean Sea Jazz Festival UNOCA wants to make the musical and art expressions more accessible to the local and international community on Aruba. They sponsor all the Arubian bands that perform at the festival and contribute to several workshops by international performers which are given, free of charge, at schools in the week before the festival. It is important for UNOCA that especially the young generations get inspired, so creativity in Aruba can continue to bloom. UNOCA contributes to a cultural identity that supports initiatives on levels of culture and promotes cooperation, professionalism, quality and innovation. UNOCA cordially invites all art lovers and those interested in Aruban culture to visit its art exhibition. On view are two collections: “The STICUSA Aruban

Collection” (1950-1989) with art collected by this former Dutch foundation and “The UNOCA Collection” (1986-now) with works collected by UNOCA. The main purpose for opening this permanent art venue is to safeguard and preserve Aruba’s cultural heritage and make it more accessible for the local and international community. These collections have a great historical and cultural value. By promoting accessibility for everyone UNOCA contributes to the awareness of the importance of culture and the important role Aruban artists play in the cultural development of our island. UNOCA is confident that more persons, especially the young generation, will be inspired by their predecessors and that creativity will continue blooming on Aruba. UNOCA and “Scol di Arte”, since 2008 part of UNOCA, have also a wide variety of children’s, youth’s and adult’s books by Aruban authors in Papiamento, English and Dutch for sale. There are also DVD’s and CD’s available, all financed by UNOCA. Furthermore specific spaces can be rented.

Performing Arts Fund of the Netherlands believes and supports the Caribbean Sea Jazz Festival. The Performing Arts Fund NL is the most important culture fund for music, music theatre, dance and theatre in the Netherlands and provides support on behalf of the government to every form of the professional performing arts. The Fund decided, once again, to support our Festival not only because of the quality of the performing artists and the event itself. They concluded that “the embedding of the festival within the Aruban community is very high. The entrepreneurship of the foundation is of great quality and the festival is a major contributor to the diversity of the audience reach and the spread of the range of performing arts in the Kingdom of the Netherlands.” It is completely unnecessary to say that we agree with the above and are particularly pleased with the contribution of Performing Arts Fund of the Netherlands.
