Has it been a year?
Hi, Has it been a year? Wow...! Welcome to the eleventh edition of the Caribbean Sea Jazz Festival. Get ready for yet another musical journey; from legendary Salsa king Ruben Bladés, Brazilian pop Zuco 103 to Maceo's two percent Jazz and ninety-eight percent Funky stuff. Shirma’s tribute to Aretha... Oh my! And…Cory Henry! How do we begin to describe this guy? A gospel background, but then Snarky Puppy and now his own Funk Apostles. Not to forget the amazing efforts the local bands go through to lay down an international appreciated show. This is heartwarming. The crew behind this event can not be forgotten... sounds cliché but I will say it anyway. Without these committed people this event cannot take place. So thank you guys for making it happen again!!!! Now, turn your phone on CSJF mode and have an awesome weekend! Cheers Erik Eman

Welcome / Bon Bini!
After celebrating our 10th anniversary with a rumble that could be heard overseas, we knew we had to step up our game to mark a new decade. And so the Caribbean Sea Jazz Festival is back for its 11th edition, with new spectacular acts, local food and of course, great music! For the fifth year in a row, the Renaissance Festival Plaza in Oranjestad will grant its premium location to Aruba’s beloved festival. Although the stage will be graced with big names such as Maceo Parker and Rubén Blades, this edition will be marked by its cultural diversity and local talents. From Brazil all the way up to Panama, this year’s line-up will bring the word ‘Caribbean’ to its true stretch. Aside from expanding your musical palette, you can once again count on getting the
8
best flavours our island has to offer. Topnotch caterers will fire up their cookers to bring you anything - from culinary snacks to full-meal dishes. Compose your own multicourse extravaganza by shopping around the stalls to fuel up for the next performance, and wash it down with a cup of special coffee or a delicious ice cream. With great emphasis on the cultural aspect, the CSJF Art Gallery & Market can’t be missed! With local artisans and performance artists from in and around the island, getting your souvenir here will surely add to the experience. Are you ready for the next decennium? We know we are, and we look forward to take you along the ride… Bon Bini and enjoy!
The history of the Caribbean Sea Jazz Festival When in 2007 Erik Eman gathered an organizational team of crazy dreamers and a handful of artists, the Caribbean Sea Jazz Festival was born. Although his aim-forthe-sky ambition was met with low expectations, Erik maintained his focus and the CSJF became a phenomenon on international scale. A decade later we are preparing for yet the 11th edition, and by the looks of it, it will be far from the last. After the Aruba Jazz & Latin Music Festival held its last edition in 2001, the island went into a long musical dry spell. With the initiative of CSJF’s founder Erik,
C A R I B B E A N S E A J A Z Z F E S T I VA L 2 0 1 7
a new platform was created for Caribbean culture, music and its lovers from all over the world. As the word gradually spread, more and more artists and collaborators joined the CSJF family, as the festival’s setup grew bigger each year. Looking back, the Caribbean Sea Jazz Festival as we know it today looks nothing like its first editions. Initially held at the culturally relevant Cas di Cultura, it quickly outgrew its birthplace and moved to the scenic Renaissance Festival Plaza. In more recent years, the CSJF organization formed collaborations with performing artists and local schools, organizing workshops for future generations. Although one of the Caribbean's greatest cultural festivals, the CSJF’s main objective has been -and always will be-
music. It’s the artists that ring familiar to visitors from around the world, and their unforgettable performances that put our festival on a historical record: Kool & the Gang, Mike Stern, Roy Hargrove, Jon Secada, Chaka Khan, Tony Succar, George Benson, José James, Prince Royce, Earth Wind & Fire Experience, Candy Dulfer, Liv Warfield, El Gran Combo de Puerto Rico, Grupo Niche, Maite Hontelé, Willy Garcia, Gualao, Oscar D’Léon, Richard Bona, Raul Midón, Tango Extremo, Angie Stone, Marcus Miller, Issac Delgado, Michel Camilo, David Sanborn, Izaline Calister, Randal Corsen, The Ploctones, Moon Baker, Anacaona, Cubop City Big Band, Cosy Cotton and many more. With the Caribbean Sea set against the background, the CSJF has always
F a c t s & fi g u r e s
stayed true to its roots by granting a stage to talent from and around the Caribbean: Izaline Calister, Roger Peterson, Angelo Koolman, Armin Solognier, Levi Sylvani, MichelAngelo, Rincon Boys, Time Bandit, Flame, Lee Connor, Idyllmist, Delbert Bernabela, Ivan Quandus, Robert Jeand’Or, Johnny Scharbaay, Ivan Jansen, Carlon Bislip, Live Xpression, Baby, Sergio Jansen, Datapanik and Wild Fire. This year Oruba and El Prove will add to the evergrowing list of artists that make our tiny island so great. In 2017 we are starting at 6:30 pm with a blasting performance of Robert Jeand’or at the Purple Stage. So make sure to be on time to loosen up your hips and to get ready for the next decennium of the Caribbean Sea Jazz Festival!

FRIDAY Sept. 15 :: 20:45 :: Padu STAGE
Rubén Blades A storyteller in rhythm Eight-time Grammy Award winner and writer of his home country’s ‘second national anthem’, the Caribbean Sea Jazz Festival is proud to present Panama’s national pride: Rubén Blades. With a musical career that spans over four decades, the humanitarian singer-songwriter has proven to be an undeniably important voice in Latin music. Able to find a soul-shaking beat in every heartfelt story, he is heating up our 2017 festival edition with some smoking hot Salsa.
10
Born in the capital of Panama in 1948, Rubén Blades Bellido de Luno grew up dreaming big in a tough neighbourhood. His marked life has been the inspiration for his music, that deservedly acquired its own subgenre ‘Thinking People’s Dance Music’. The lyrical tribute to his homeland ‘Patria’ made Rubén a national treasure, while his signature song ‘Pedro Navaja’ became a relatable song for anyone living in the projects of Latin America. He started collaborating with salsa musician Willie Colón in 1976, with whom he released several
successful albums. Their second album ‘Siembra’ is widely considered to be the most popular salsa album of all time. Although Rubén rose to fame in the Salsa genre, he claims his music can’t be categorized. Over the years he has explored Latin Jazz, Afro-Cuban, but also outside the Latin genre in collaborations with Sting and Lou Reed. As a true singer of the torch song, his main objective is to touch people’s hearts and move their feet along the way.

Maceo Parker
Maceo Parker, blow your horn! What would funk be, without Maceo Parker? One of the most recognizable instrumentalists in history, this pedigree saxophonist propelled to fame playing alongside the great James Brown, the Red Hot Chili Peppers and Prince. At 74 years and still blowing strong, this musical prodigy has created a league of his own. Passing the decades like a blast of air, Maceo has a timeless sound that sucked in the hearts of many generations. Proving that he is far from his last breath, he will sound his horn at the 11th edition of the Caribbean Sea Jazz Festival.
With music at his family roots, Maceo started playing the tenor sax at a young age. At 21, he and his brother joined James Brown, who soon enough became to praise him as one of his premium band members. The following years Maceo thrived as a saxophonist and singer, with the King of Soul often referring out loud to him in his songs: “Maceo, I want you to blow your horn!”. When he started touring with his own formation ‘Maceo & All The Kings Men’ in 1970, he had already set the tone that would eventually make him the most sampled musician in history.
In 1990, Maceo pursued a solo career, kicking off with the chart-hitting album ‘Roots Revisited’. With no less than 11 solo albums, he established himself as a master of melody and unprecedented band leader. Although his sound and legacy was widely recognized by music lovers, it wasn’t until 2012 before he was granted the Lifetime Achievement Award by the Victoires Du Jazz. This September, brace yourself for the brass legend, and be prepared to be blown away!

Cory Henry & The Funk Apostles A musical message from heaven Things are going well for multiinstrumentalist Cory Henry and his latest project. The three-time Grammy Award winner already perched at success playing with Snarky Puppy, but accounts for supporting many other great artists like Lalah Hathaway, Yolanda Adams, Boyz 2 Men, Bruce Springsteen and The Roots. With over 16 million views on YouTube, tens of thousands followers on social media and an appearance on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon, Cory and his Apostles are blowing up the musical scale.
14
When a 6-year old Cory played at the Apollo Theater in New York City’s Harlem, he knew he was destined for great things. His technical skills allow him to tell a story through music, integrating jazz, gospel and funk into the storyline. Already touring at the age of 19, Cory soon became a wanted keyboardist to play with the big names in music. When his first solo album ‘First Steps’ reached #1 on the iTunes Jazz Chart in 2014, he marked his name into the genre. Although best known for his impeccable solos, Cory knew he had to share the
stage to fully send the musical message across. Handpicking some of the best instrumentalists in the world, he gathered The Funk Apostles. As true messengers of funky rhythms, their television and live performances have garnered them a following of biblical proportions. No more clicking the ‘thumbs up’ button to view their performance, come and let yourself be enlightened at this year’s CSJF live spectacle!

Friday Sept. 15 :: 0:15 :: PADU STAGE
NG la Banda The musical genre we now call Timba was arguably created by NG La Banda, but as Cuban music expert Arturo “Marcané” Gómez points out, it was not created out of thin air. As our “Genealogy of Timba Family Tree” shows, singer Tony Calá wrote and played violin in Ritmo Oriental; Issac Delgado and the legendary conguero Juan “Wickly” Nogueras started with Pachito Alonso; Gérman Velazco played with Orquesta Revé; and Velazco, José “El Greco” Crego, Carlos Averhoff, and José Munguía played in Irakere along with flautist and leader, José Luis “El Tosco” Cortés, who had previously written and played for Los Van Van.
16
NG La Banda combined the innovations of the groups that came before it with many of its own to create a type of music that wasn’t son, songo or rumba – nor was it rock, jazz or funk. It had ample amounts of each blended in, but its most potent component was something entirely new – something that was born in the streets and barrios of Havana in the late 1980’s as the Berlin Wall crumbled. Cortés called it “timba”. Before leaving Irakere, El Tosco had begun what was to be an experimental side-project to “make a study of Cuban music and Jazz”. It was known alternately as “Nueva Generación” and “Orquesta
Todos Estrellas”. The members were handpicked from the raging Cuban Jazz scene of the 80’s and included such giants as Gonzálo Rubalcalba, Hernán LópezNussa, Horacio “El Negro” Hernández, Calixto Oviedo and most of the musicians who would later become NG La Banda. The group produced four vinyl records which have never been released on CD although some of the tracks can be found on compilations. Somewhere along the way, Tosco’s vision for what would ultimately become NG La Banda began to materialize. As he told Jordan Levin of the Miami Herald, “I wanted to do something with the flavor of Van Van and the musical aggressiveness of Irakere…to give [popular music] the same artistic and aesthetic value that we give to other great forms of music.” The result was a huge catalog of timeless classics such as Santa Palabra, La expresiva, Échale limón, Que viva Changó, and Picadillo de soya. NG La Banda profoundly influenced all of the great timba bands that followed it. Just as the great groups and musical innovations of the 70’s and 80’s had funneled into NG La Banda, most of the great groups of the 90’s grew directly out of it. Issac Delgado and Giraldo Piloto (leader of Klímax; writer for Charanga Habanera and Issac) were key members of the original NG La Banda, and Paulito FG and Manolín were both very much part of the NG scene. Paulito sang coro on critical early NG recordings and Manolín was “discovered” and introduced to the public by El Tosco, who recorded one of his songs, coined his nickname, “El Médico de la Salsa”, and produced his first album.

Zuco 103 A musical journey with a unique sound of searching new inspiration under the radar, the band recently released their highly anticipated comeback album Etno Chic. In good Brazilian fashion, this calls for a celebration… What better place to have it, than at the 2017 Caribbean Sea Jazz Festival?
What happens when you take a Dutch big band percussionist, a German jazz pianist and a sultry Brazilian singer? A beautiful melting pot called Zuco 103. Pioneering ‘Brazilectro’, a fusion of Brazilian jazz and electronic beats, the band has been making rhythm since 1999. After eight years
Although Brazilian singer Lilian Vieira moved to the Netherlands in 1989, she always felt strongly connected to her native culture and traditions. Following her vocal studies at the Rotterdam Conservatorium, she started performing with Brazilian musicians and searched to develop her own musical style. When she met New Cool Collective drummer
Stefan Kruger and experienced jazz keyboardist Stefan Schmid, they joined forces and Zuco 103 was born. After winning the Heineken Crossover Award and the Edison Viewer’s Choice Award in the early 2000’s, Zuco 103 was literally sent flying. The band’s global journey marks its multi-faceted sound; from West African beats to Cuban rhythms, from smooth samba to edgy drum ‘n bass. Praised for their live performances internationally, the ‘fusicians’ highlighted at the 30th anniversary of the North Sea Jazz Festival. This September, they are ready to bring the Brazilectric vibe to the CSJF stage!

Shirma Rouse tribute to Aretha FranklIN
Lady of Soul with a golden voice Before Shirma rose to fame in her home country the Netherlands, she gained experience by performing as a backing vocalist for the greatest: Chaka Khan, Michael Bolton, Alain Clark, Candy Dulfer and Dutch representative Anouk at the Eurovision Song Contest. After being proclaimed as best supporting vocal by The Eurovision Times, it was time for Shirma to move to the front stage. Four years and three successful albums later she has become one of the Netherlands’ most celebrated Soul singers. In 2017, she pays it forward by celebrating Soul legend Aretha Franklin.
18
Born and raised on Sint Eustatius, Shirma carried along a great deal of Caribbean soul when she moved to the Netherlands at the age of 19. Although she always stayed true to her Gospel roots, she grew to fame performing Jazz, Funk and Soul. After her appearance in The Voice of Holland, she leaped to the next level of her career. She successfully released three albums, the third one being awarded the 2015 Edison Jazzism Audience Award. Her highly anticipated fourth studio album ‘Soul Serenade’ was recently released, including newly arranged classics like ‘Imagine’ and ‘Let It Be’, and a duet with US soul sensation Ryan Shaw.
This year will be a year of Soul; with Aretha Franklin’s 75th Birthday, and Shirma Rouse bringing it home to the Caribbean. Paying R-E-S-P-E-C-T to the Queen of Soul in her Celebration Tour, Shirma stops by Aruba to shake up the Caribbean Sea Jazz Festival. As quoted by the Dutch press, only few can deliver a tribute as convincing as Shirma does. You better Think, before missing this special performance!

Beyond the music: The next generation
For ten subsequent years, Aruba has been the perfect platform of the Caribbean Sea Jazz Festival. Our happy island provided us with beautiful locations, the best local artists, and indispensably our sponsors and contributors. Once again, the CSJF organization gives back to the community by organizing workshops for scholars, given by some of our finest performers. In 2016 we visited the Scol di Arte in San Nicolaas with New Cool Collective. The band explained about music and percussion and made music together with the children. Some music talented students from the school joined them on stage and all the others participated joined by using their hands and feet.
20
In the second part of the workshop all the children were welcomed on stage to play along and to get to know the instruments. It was a huge success and brought a lot of joy and knowledge to everyone.
Scol Basico Washington was privileged to welcome our famous and beloved artist Izaline from Curacao. The whole school had to do some pre work before she came to visit as Izaline had indicated that she preferred to give the workshop to the whole school. While all children gathered on the playground they all sang along with this great artist together with her band. Tony Succar, the multi-instrumentalist and arranger from Peru who was raised in Miami visited our island with the band Unity. They gave a percussion work shop in the cosy theatre Cueba for all percussionist of Aruba who were interested in a free master class.

Robert Jeand’or
Esha with Live Xpressions
Robert Jeand'or is one of Aruba's very own national treasures. He also has some of the best CSJF stories to tell. "In 2014, we were called by the organizers to come play that same night. One of the bands that was booked wasn't able to play at the last minute. That turned out to be one great show. The year before we played the festival in the rain. I mean, it was pouring. But we kept on playing and everybody kept on dancing in the rain!" Those performances confirmed yet again what locals already know for decades; that Robert Jeand'or and his Solo Banda Show are not to be missed. As a musician, Robert has an unparalleled resume, having played with the greatest names in salsa and merengue, from Johnny Rivera to Celia Cruz and Juan Luis Guerra. He is also a great mentor to many young musicians on the island. Robert Jeand’or y su Solo Banda Show have performed frequently at Aruba’s most prestigious festivals sharing the stage with numerous international acts. A memorable milestone is that Robert Jeand’or y su Solo Banda Show have been part of Aruba’s Carnival parades for 24 consecutive years with the same Carnival organization , Los Laga Bai. A feat not accomplished before.
At simply 15 years of age, Esha has managed to accomplish much in her career as a singer, songwriter – proving that creativity is not limited by age. Listening to her finely crafted, emotionally charged music, it’s hard to believe the heart and voice behind it belongs to someone so young. With the release of her debut album “Beautiful” in 2016, and her second album, “Dangerous” in June of 2017, Esha is well on her way to creating a name for herself. While “Beautiful” was an emotional, intimate diary of a young artist discovering her talent, “Dangerous” is a brave, passionate collection of songs that explores the dangers of love. Her music video, “Yesterday” already has over 26,000 views in just a few short months. You will also find her featured in the 2017 issue of Destination Magazine and on July 1st, Esha stunned Aruba on stage at the Aruba Summer Music Festival with an incredible set, captivating dancers, and a voice that dared the audience not to move with the beat and sing along to the catchy hooks. Esha is definitely one to watch; Aruba’s up and coming international star!
Ash plays Santana Aruba’s Santana Tribute Band was formed to honor the legendary Carlos Santana while he is alive. In 2012 Ash and some friends formed a 14 piece band. In 2015 they performed at Cas di Cultura. At this years’ Caribbean Sea Jazz Festival, the band will perform as a 7 piece band with all exclusive Santana classics hits from Woodstock 1969 to Latin modern style jazz music. All members of the band, who usually perform separately at Aruba’s hotels and restaurants, especially came together for this event.

Aruban native pianist/arranger with a passion for Latin Jazz. He lived for many years with the dream of creating his own Latin Jazz Group. This group performs original composed and arranged compositions and local Aruban classic songs re-arranged in a Latin jazz style. In January of 2016, Rodney started composing and arranging all of the songs and after that, the recordings started in HR Studio of Mr. Hershel Rosario in Curaçao. There they recorded all the Rhythm sessions (drums, congas, timbales and all other African instruments such as bata’s and shekere). The name Caribbean Latin Jazz Xpress is formed out of two concepts. One is the mix of musicians out of Aruba, Curaçao, Cuba and Venezuela, and the other one is to honor Aruba’s only Jazz Radio Program held on Aruba’s Magic 96.5 FM by Mr. Tendo Boekhoudt and Mr. Giovanni Muller.

Chris Kross and his group
Oruba
Chris Kross is the rising star in the firmament of the Jazz scene in Aruba. He started playing his guitar at this festival when he was only 16 years old and has performed every consecutive year afterwards. In this festival, this Berklee student has some serious plans to impress everyone! In his first solo-act at CSJF, Chris Kross has surrounded himself with some cool and ferocious cats to give the crowd quite a show. He will perform together with Randal Corsen, the well-known pianist from Curaçao, the bass player Reno Steba from Aruba, thé most demanded drummers in Aruba, Jeremy Bonaribba and the singers Michelangelo Koolman and Susjaira Kerpens. Prepare yourself for a beautiful, energetic and most of all varied evening with Chris Kross and group.
Oruba, a new project that is making it's debut at the Caribbean Jazz Festival with young talented musicians, has cultivated in the last 30 years. Reno Steba, who is living in The Netherlands and has worked and toured with many well-known artists in Europe and abroad, is the founder of this group and intends to expose our musical talents around the world. The music reflects the native rhythms of the island, sung in Papiamento and colored with jazz harmonies. It will bring you the flavor of modern progressive Aruban music. The music contains elements of Jazz, Tumba, Tambu, Gaita and Gnaoua music (native Moroccan music), which bare the same rhythmical 6/8 patterns that our local music uses. Oruba will be shooting his first live video clip on the festival, so come and support our local talents.
Siegfried Hart Siegfried Hart is a drummer, a composer and a multiinstrumentalist currently living in the Netherlands.
28
He started to play guitar at the age of 13. But that was not quite what he was looking for. At the age of 15 he bought his first drum kit and after practicing a few year at drum camps he started his first band and played on the Open Podium at the art gallery of Caribbean Sea Jazz festival in 2012. Since then he performed on the bigger stages of CSJF the following years, he has lead different bands over the years and played at various festivals. He has won numerous prizes in his career including the Aruba’s “Young and Talented” award. Siegfried Hart Trio is a musical experiment. Siegfried has an enormous love for hip hop and R&B and in this project he experiments those elements while fusing them with jazz. He plays along with bass player Ivan Quandus, who is one of Aruba’s most recorded bassist and one of the best arrangers on the island. The mastermind behind the keys is Terrance Green, who will melt you with his insane groove and beautiful melodies on the keys.

The CSJF heats up! Can’t wait until the 15th of September? We’ve got good news for you! In true Caribbean fashion, the party already starts before the actual festival. Late night jam sessions, surprise performances, and of course the official Pre-Party will surely get the engines going! Join in and get fuelled up for the ride along the “Road to CSJF”. The “Road to CSJF” events kick-started with the Fourtina show, a blazing tribute to Tina Turner at Cas di Cultura, a performance of Nurlaila at Fusion Restaurant Wine and Piano bar and Jemm’s live performance at the Casibari Café. Missed it? No worries, because we have a lot more in store along the waiting line for you…
In the days leading up to the main event, the CSJF organization will get into gear with several pop-up performances. Over the past years many artists -including the great names- have appeared on different hot spots in Aruba, to jam with other international and local artists. To find out where the next warming-up session will be, frequently check our Facebook and website. On Wednesday September 13th Casibari Café will once again set the stage for the official Pre-Party. Performing artists from the festival will steam up the place, while you can wash it down with an icecold beer and BBQ-style dinner under a starry Caribbean sky.

Music for the eyes
Life in the Caribbean has always been saturated with great music, and amplified by colourful imagery. Whether you’re an art knower or novice, visual art can stir any soul just like music can do. For those who like to experience the visual rhythms of local and international artists, the CSJF Art Expo and Arts & Crafts Market is the place to catch a tune. Red sandy roads, orange sunsets and bright blue water… It’s easy to see where exhibitors at the CSJF Art Expo get their inspiration from. Both local and international artists contribute to the gallery; from realistic paintings to abstract photographs. Offering a quiet
CS J F ART
retreat from the festival brawl, this is where you ease the ears and tease the eyes. Ready to dive deeper into Aruba’s culture? Visit our Arts & Crafts Market, where local artisans showcase their dexterity with hand-made sculptures and handicrafts. Stroll along the market stalls, looking for that unique souvenir to remember this edition by. A great CSJF tradition, this year the exhibiting participants will once again collaborate on a grand piece of art on the spot. Stick around to see the artists at work, and try your luck by buying a lot to vie for last year’s artwork.

This anniversary book is a photographical journey down memory lane, highlighting the special moments that are imprinted into our memory. Moreover, it is a tribute to those who made the CSJF possible. The support of the audience and everybody involved in the project has kept me going throughout the years, and can keep me going for another 10 years. I guess what a crazy dreamer is trying to say: 'Thank you.' Enjoy the trip through our dearest memories, and when you come back let's make some more!

Eat - Dance - Repeat
At CSJF we understand that music may be the food of love, but you can’t eat the beat. This September we present you with an array of delicious choices, prepared by Aruba’s finest caterers. From authentic local cuisine to orientally infused dishes, from creamy oyster soups to juicy beef burgers, there is something for every taste bud. The best news is: you and your friends can enjoy your different choices together in a restaurant setting. Hungry yet? Last year our extensive Food Court was mouth-wateringly received by festival visitors. With a buffet of culinary options to pick from, collaborative restaurants showcased their top-shelf dishes to cater to everyone’s cravings. This year we are turning it up a notch with new tasteful additions, like the mixed grill snack platter in combination with a fabulous
38
champagne. And why not satisfy your sweet tooth with Dutch ‘poffertjes’ (sugared mini-pancakes) and a Baileys or Kahlua coffee, served hot or cold! Located conveniently at the centre of the festival site, the Food Court offers ample seating in a garden terrace setting. You will never miss out on anything, as while you enjoy your Angus steak slider or finger-licking chicken wings, you have an excellent view of the main stage. All outlets accept festival tokens, which can be obtained at centrally located cashiers on the terrain. We welcome you at our Food Court from 6 pm, and advise you to arrive early. Not only will you get most out of your entrance fee, but nothing beats watching the Aruban sunset with an order of Keeshi Yena and a refreshing drink. Bon appétit!
