INTRODUCTION

Hi everybody!

Welcome to the 12th edition of Caribbean Sea Jazz. I can’t believe we have already had 11 successful editions… In the previous years we have received countless top-ofthe-charts artists and upcoming stars from all over the world, the CSJF family has never stopped growing.

A big ‘THANK YOU’ goes out to our sponsors, the new Minister of Tourism Mr. Dangui Oduber, and certainly not least: our own team. Thank you for being part of the CSJF family!

This year, it shows how family and music are connected more than ever. In terms of sisterhood, we are blessed with the disco sounds of Sister Sledge ft. Kathy Sledge and the Cuban all-female rhythmical sections of Anacaona. Diversity is brought by the jazz fusion quartet Yellowjackets, that have been together so long they are virtually related, while Dutch rock group Di-rect will tell their musical story that once started from a father and son initiative.

Enjoy…

A big family needs a big kitchen, which is why you will find new flavours on our Food Court to trigger your taste buds. With the return of the art gallery and the (almost) Naked Stage, the puzzle is completed and ready for you to explore.

Warm regards Erik Eman Festival Director / Founder

Welcome!

What a blast we had last year… On the 11th edition of the CSJF, the visitors shook the grounds of our island with the appearances of Ruben Blades and Shirma Rouse. Singing and dancing along familiar tunes, we were blessed with a crowd that delivered an aftershock imprinted in our musical memory. 2018 will be the year of the family, as many performing artists are either connected through bloodline, or are part of a closer-than-kindred collaboration. Our line-up includes word-class stars, like Sister Sledge feat. Kathy Sledge, Anacaona, Di-Rect, The Yellowjackets and Jorge Celedón, but also local stars

8

like Habana Vieja All Stars and the Robert Pablo Trio. As you can expect from any Caribbean family, the 12th edition will once again welcome you with the best food. We have invited top caterers from around the island, to present you with their signature dishes and refreshing drinks. From small appetizers and snacks, to full-course meals and inventive desserts, you won’t leave our place with an empty stomach! The first and foremost aspect of our festival, is the cultural one. Aside from offering a mix of local and international musical artists, we incorporate visual artistry on our Art Gallery and Crafts

Market. The most beautiful thing about Aruba, is its diversity for such a small island, which can be traced back in the collector’s items that local sculptors, painters and artisans display on their stalls. The festival will be held at the landmarked Renaissance Festival Plaza in Oranjestad, where festival doors open at 6pm on both days. Make sure to be on time and find the best spot, to enjoy Friday’s first performance of the Rincon Boyz and Saturday’s kick-off with Cosy Cotton. We will see you there, to grant you a warm welcome to the family!

Jorge Celedón Born and raised in the birth region of vallenato music, Colombian Jorge Celedón grew familiar with the sweeping rhythm of the guacharaca from a young age. His uncle, renown vallenato singer Daniel Celedón, invited an only 7 years young ‘Jorgito’ to let his voice be heard on the track ‘Drama Provinciano’. The song became a Colombian anthem, and Celedón’s musical career was ignited. After years of performing on local folk festivals, Celedón rose to fame throughout Colombia, Venezuela and Mexico with the group Binomio de Oro de América. In 2001, Celedón joined forces with accordionist Jimmy Zambrano, which resulted in 13 years of successful collaboration, including a Latin Grammy win for the album ‘Son… Para El Mundo’. His musical ambassadorship was proven, when in 2007 he was invited to perform in front of the US president at the White House, to celebrate the Colombian Independence Day. In 2014, Celedón hauled in his second Latin Grammy for the album ‘Celedón Sin Fronteras’. With a truly heartfelt rendition of his home country’s national music, Jorge Celedón takes the stage on the 12th edition of the Caribbean Sea Jazz Festival. Suave rhythms,

10

swaying accordions and the soothing voice of Celedón will send you on a sweet trip into the folk music of Colombia.

Although vallenato music officially originated in Colombia’s Caribbean region, the sound of the accordion was actually discovered and added on our very own island of Aruba and the island of Curaçao. This September we welcome you, to come and experience the heart of vallenato with Jorge Celedón.

Sister Sledge ft. Kathy Sledge

in the following years. The year 1979 marked their breakthrough, with their platinum album and eponymous hit single We Are Family. Setting the bar for each music genre that would reign the following decade, the Sledges successfully performed jazz, gospel, R&B, soul and disco. With a sales of 15 million records worldwide up to date, the multiple Grammy nominated group delivered smash hits like He’s The Greatest Dancer, My Guy, Frankie, Lost In Music and Thinking Of You. Throughout the decades, they continued to receive praise for their live performances. They have graced the most prestigious stages around the globe, including Carnegie Hall, Madison Square Garden and The Royal Albert Hall. That is why we are exhilarated, to announce on this year’s CSJF: Sister Sledge featuring Kathy Sledge.

This year’s edition of the Caribbean Sea Jazz Festival is all about family, and these ladies are coming to the party! The third generation in line of the musical Sledge family, the group has reigned supreme over the disco dance floor for over 45 years. Their tunes have become anthems for both familyhood and womanhood, and although they are each accomplished soloists, their strength lies in their musical bond. On the fourth weekend of this

With a classical tutoring grandmother and two parents from the theatre world, the young girls were inspired to pursue big dreams. In 1971 they took it from the church to the stage, gaining great popularity

Di-rect

Feel like rocking out? Then we got news for you… Responsible for rock anthems ‘Just The Way I Do’, ‘Times Are Changing’ and ‘Inside My Head’, Di-rect is coming to the Caribbean Sea Jazz Festival to spread the message of rock music. The band is proudly rooted in the Netherlands’ musical capital The Hague, and boasts nearly 20 years of rocking the country. Back in 1999, a 15-year old drummer Jamie Westland and his father decided to find three more young artists and form a teenage band. Discovered by radio

DJ Rob Stenders, he played their song ‘Just The Way I Do’ on Dutch radio, and Di-rect was engraved into the nation. After the release of their debut album Discover, they were accoladed Best Dutch Rock Act and four prestigious TMF awards. During the subsequent years, the band changed formation twice, but never quit to hit the charts. They scored one success after another, including #1 albums All Systems Go! and Daydreams In A Blackout. Aside from drummer Westland, the band is currently lined up with frontman Marcel Veenendaal, guitarist Frans “Spike” van Zoest, bassist Bas van Wageningen,

guitarist Paul Jan Bakker and on keys Matteo Iannella. Although celebrated for their studio recordings, the true party is when the band enters the stage. With over 2,000 live international performances, they have never ceased to bring the energy. After the release of their Edisonnominated album Rolling With The Punches, they performed their greatest club show to date at the Amsterdam AFAS Concert Hall. This September, we invite you to let down your hair and bring out the rocker in you. You’re going to love it -take it from us, Di-rect to you-.

Anacaona

¡Viva las Cubanas! No less than 88 years ago, this all-female orchestra founded in Havana. Today, a new generation of passionate women honour the name and message of sisterhood. Led by bassists Georgina and Dorita Aguirre, the group has been renewed with talented music school graduates. Ladies AND gentlemen, we proudly present: ¡Anacaona! Back in the early 1930s, it was believed that women weren’t capable of playing Son Cubano. When the group of 11 sisters formed, they were out to send more than a musical message across the nation. Their popularity quickly grew, leading them to work together

14

with salsa icons like Omara Portuondo and Celia Cruz. In 1962, Anacaona joined Cuba’s National Council of Culture, establishing the group as true Cuban musical heritage. In the late ‘80s, the band had its revival. The remaining sisters decided to retire, and pass the batons to the Aguirre sisters. They decided to keep the name, that refers to a heroic female Taíno leader in Hispaniola. They developed a sound, that draws heavily from the ’90s style of Cuban music known as Timba. Over the past decades, they released several studio albums that included eponymous hits like Como Un Milagro, Anacaona ¡Ay!, and Llora Si Te Duelo.

Although their current sound fits the contemporary Latin music genre, the vocal harmonies and instrumentalism surely carry you back to the old salsa days. This September, Anacaona is ready to rumble on the Caribbean Sea Jazz Festival!

Eric Darius & Althea René regarded arguably her best work to date. ‘Live In Detroit’ became the first flute record to rank #1 on the Billboard Music Chart. Before becoming an internationally acclaimed saxophonist, songwriter and producer, Eric Darius had Caribbean music close to his heart. Both his Jamaican mother and Haitian father were classically trained instrumentalists, passing on their legacy to Eric and his siblings. Like his fellow performer René, Darius was an early songbird. He discovered his love for the saxophone at nine years old, and released his first studio album at the age of 17. Having performed alongside Prince, Mary J. Blige, Santana, Babyface and many others, he was rightfully voted best saxophonist at the 2017 Citril Starz Awards. Whether you like jazz, feel the funk or have a heart for instrumental R&B, Althea René and Eric Darius are sure to send you flying during the 2018 edition of the Caribbean Sea Jazz Festival.

A wonderful and unique addition to our line-up, this brass duo is compiled of two distinct artists, who set the musical bar as high as the Caribbean September sun. Both known for blowing away the crowd with their impeccable live performances and improvisational sets, we are pleased to present you with the funk of flutist Althea René and saxophonist Eric Darius. Born Althea René McCullers in Detroit, the daughter of Motown’s original Funk Brother Dezie McCuller was surrounded by great musicians from a young age. After she finished her classical music studies at Howard University, René decided she wanted to change the game and become the first acknowledged jazz flute soloist. During the 2000s she released several albums, but her big break came when she and Grammy Award-winning producer Michael Broening started her fifth project ‘In The Flow’. With the release of the title track, René whistled her way to the top of the Billboard Chart and Smooth Jazz Chart. In 2015, she gave a strong performance at her hometown’s Public Library, of which the live recording is

Eric Essix ft. Karen Bryant & Kelley O’Neal released several hits that reached #1 on the jazz charts, including ‘Shuttlesworth Drive’ and ‘Foot Soldiers’. In 2014, he crowned his work with the highly successful The Isley Sessions, a tribute to his idols The Isley Brothers.

Although relative new kids on the block Karen Bryant and Kelley O’Neal and established jazz icon Eric Essix seem to have little in common, they share a very rare quality found in the music business. You won’t find either artist following the mainstream current, as they are changing the game of jazz without dishonouring the genre. Bryant as a stunning vocalist with a humble appearance, O’Neal as an established saxophonist, and Essix as a jazz guitarist that explores the world of pop and R&B.

Born in New York and raised in North Carolina, Karen Bryant had seen every side of the musical spectrum at a young age. Brought up with various music styles, from swing and country to gospel and Motown, she found her own voice when she stumbled onto jazz. Although Bryant never chased the spotlight, it is her raw talent that afforded her a gateway to fame. Her highlights to date include an appearance at the Apollo Theatre in NYC, and collaborations with the Yellowjackets and Grammy Award Nominee John Stoddart. This September will be twice the prize for Bryant, as aside from shining on the Caribbean Sea Jazz Festival, her first solo album will be released. Then there’s Mr. Essix. Bringing the strings from Birmingham, Alabama, this established instrumentalist came with a mission. During his 30-years lasting recording career, Essix was never one to play by the rules. Dusting off the old jazz sound, he created a fresh style by infusing R&B, blues and pop. During his three decades of discography, he has

From Huntsville, Alabama, we bring you Kelley O’Neal. During his high school years, the acclaimed saxophonist had already earned a remarkable total of 50 solo and ensemble performance awards, including the highly coveted John Philip Sousa Award. After he attended the University of Alabama on music scholarship, his career soared as he played alongside the Four Tops, the Temptations, BeBe and CeCe Winans, and Brian McKnight. Although his saxophone skills have littered him with prizes, his main objective has always remained to spread the message of jazz music. So forget everything you know about jazz music, and prepare to be schooled by Karen Bryant, Kelley O’Neal and Eric Essix on the 12th edition of Aruba’s most beloved festival.

Montis, Goudsmit & Directie share a passion for groove and a true love for funky Soul Jazz. Organ beast Frank Montis grooves like no other and regularly met Goudsmit & Directie on sessions. An absolute killer combo, so they turned out to be, that will set any audience on fire. A trio was born.

Yellowjackets touring with legends Chaka Kahn and Jonathan Butler, he was ready to commit to a group where he could pursue his dream to become a pioneering front man drummer. When saxophonist and arranger Bob Mintzer joined, the group was enriched with a true academic in the jazz genre. Although only the true jazz experts may know him by his passionate project the Bob Mintzer Big Band, he is mostly known through quotations and scores of colleges and universities playing Bob Mintzer charts. With the addition of electric bass guitarist Dane Alderson, the game had reached a full quartet. Alderson is mostly known for his work with James Morrison, but rose to acclaim when he supported electric bass phenomenon Victor Wooten.

Bringing an eclectic mix of jazz and R&B, this jazz fusion quartet is ready to deliver a world-class performance on the 2018 edition of the Caribbean Sea Jazz Festival. A collective of top-class musicians, the 14-time Grammy-nominated US band has spread its soulful message across the world for over four decades. They delivered 27 distinguished studio albums, and an array of unparalleled live performances. When the Yellowjackets were founded back in 1977, original member and

keyboardist Russell Ferrante didn’t dare to dream he literally signed up for the trip of a lifetime. He started taking piano lessons at 9, but his passion for music truly awoke when he first heard the marriage of jazz and R&B in his hometown San José. His musical genius surpassed the local gospel church piano, as he enrolled into collaborations with great names such as Bobby McFerrin and Joni Mitchell.

The Yellowjackets are renown for their live performances, and they look forward to play the back-beat forth on the 12th edition of Aruba’s most beloved festival.

In 1986 the group was joined by William Kennedy, the house drummer for The Wayne Brady Show on ABC. After

CSJF is more than a festival The goal of CSJF, together with the Caribbean Sea Foundation (CSF), is to offer a cultural platform with a quality mix of music to a broad audience, from Aruban local to tourist, to both young and old. For this reason, the CSF believes it is important for Aruba’s younger generation to get acquainted with the different subgenres within jazz, soul and Latin music. To make this possible, the CSF annually organises a number of primary school workshops during the week leading up to the festival. Performing artists from the festival visit the schools for a mini concert, or a special music class with the children. Last year, Shirma Rouse visited the Colegio Santa Teresita in San Nicolas.

20

The children of the senior classes had prepared the song “All of me”, from John Legend. Together with Shirma and her band, the children practised the song. After a few rehearsals, the children were ready to perform in front of the whole school, singing the song in canon! Apart from the performing children, the school’s gym was filled with complete silence and gaspingly attentive kids. In the same year, the Cuban big band NG La Banda visited Colegio Bon Bini in Oranjestad. They gave a mini concert, that soon enough turned into a salsa lesson, with every youngster participating in the fun. Some students even brought their own drums, and with the guidance of NG La Banda’s drummer and percussionist a spontaneous jam session was held.

2017 was the first time for CSJF to include a ‘Naked Stage’. Drummer Oscar Kraal, familiar for his work with Anouk, Candy Dulfer and Frank Boeijen, performed a drum solo for 15 minutes on a small stage. No musical accompaniment, no break, which is where the term ‘Naked’ derives from. On the second day, the stage was granted to three local drummers, taking turns to give a 15-minute long drum solo. In the week prior to this special performance, Oscar gave them a drum clinic in Theatre Cuba. During two intense rehearsal days, the three young drummers were groomed for their performance at the CSJF. The theatre was open during the clinic, so music enthusiasts and music school students dropped by to catch a glimpse of the tips given by the grandmaster.

Apart from that, Oscar will once again inspire children with his masterclass for drums, where he will address an array of modern drum topics. These children will be in for a treat

El Prove and Habana Vieja All Stars Eduardo Proveyer, "El Prove", is a saxophonist originally from the heart of Havana. He took the initiative to compile a band of all-stars musicians in a typical and traditional format: the “El Prove and Habana Vieja All Stars”. To understand the origin of the band we have to go back into the past of Cuba and old Havana. Old Havana was declared as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1982 with an own intense and musical culture. The Rumba, the Guaguanco, the Son, the Guaracha and other genres are the roots of this culture. “El Prove and Habana Vieja All Stars” unites this culture and reinvented it by combining the traditional Cuban music with Jazz influences. This style makes the band one of a kind and they keep the old Cuban culture alive.

rincon boyz

One day a group of young musical friends, all of them originating from the island of Bonaire and residing in Aruba, came together with the idea

to form a folk group to keep the Bonairean folk music alive in Aruba. The plan was to perform on Sundays for friends and families, for example for Bonairean families residing in Aruba who miss their island and music. Also in 2009 they decided to participate on the Aruban Hymn and Flag festival, which is very popular on the island. There the Aruban crowd had received

and accepted them with open arms and from then on things got more serious! After that they recorded their first album “Rincon Boyz Take It Easy” which helped existing folk tunes to get more recognition on all the islands and the bookings kept coming afterwards even on other Caribbean islands. Their second album “Rincon Boyz Goes International”, which contains the mega hit “Porfin tin un homber!” (Finally there is a man!), was an instant success and became the number one song in 2010!

Tribute to Caribbean Sea Jazz Project FT. Andy Narrell and Etienne Stadwijk

Guitarist Jeanoir Koolman together with his two siblings, Pierre Koolman and Jean Paul Laclé, are a huge fan of the Caribbean Jazz Project. It was always their dream to see them play live someday.

Little that they knew, the Caribbean Jazz Project was not performing anymore since the band leader Dave Samuels was struggling with Alzheimer’s decease. With that news, Jeanoir had the idea to do a tribute to his favorite band and told the festival director Erik Eman about it. Erik enlarged this idea to suggest inviting an original member of the Caribbean Project. For the local guys this would be a dream come true.

was invited. Narell and Stadwijk have performed at the CSJF before as part of the band Caribbo. Be ready for an amazing mix of international and local artists with a similar passion.

After having Andy Narell onboard in this project, also Etienne Stadwijk

Cosy Cotton Formed in 1986, the band members had already played in Dutch blues bands. They toured in the Netherlands, Germany and Belgium and accompanied many American blues players on tours all across Europe. In 1989 they won the Benelux Blues Award, followed by a very successful tour. The band played at many important Blues and Jazz festivals on the same bill, with big names as BB

King, Ray Charles, Robert Cray, the Blues Brothers Band, Johnny Adams and Chaka Kahn. Bert Devies, the original player of the band and three top Blues players from Aruba got together for a Blues revival show. The ‘Cosy Cotton magic’ was back. The band will take the audience on a musical Blues trip from Chicago to the swamps of Louisiana and back again during this festival.

A Tribute to Sade After the culmination of the previous Caribbean Sea Jazz Festival, an idea was born to do a Tribute to Sade. Guitarist Jeanoir Koolman approached singer Virginia Rasmijn, knowing how huge of a fan she is of Sade, and asked her if she wanted to collaborate on this project. She was really excited about the whole thing and without a doubt joined the project.

The idea behind the project is to pay a tribute to Sade's music, but since this is the Caribbean Sea Jazz Festival, Koolman and Rasmijn want to add a "Caribbean flavor". They can assure you that this will be a show you do not want to miss!

robert pablo trio Since the bands inception in April of this year, they have been playing at various venues in the Netherlands entertaining several.

Versatile, articulate and dynamic. These are just some of the words that describes these young artists. Sharing a passion for contemporary jazz music, it was relatively easy for this trio to assemble for this edition of the Caribbean Sea Jazz Festival. Individually, a lot can be said about what these artists have achieved.

26

Band leader Robert Pablo always wanted to lead his own band, having many concepts in mind. One of them being a covered concept, which entails

performing songs that truly inspired him throughout his development. Together with Kyle Winklaar on piano and David Bernabela on Bass, this trio plans to perform this covered concept together with some original compositions.

MEMORIES OF TOMORROW The Aruban saxophonist, producer, educator and composer Delbert Bernabela, current lives in the Netherlands, from where he extensively works and tours in Europe, but also performs in the Caribbean, US and South America. He fronts his band together with son David Bernabela who has been working on creating his own sound and finding his path in his musical career. This has led him to establish several bands in the music styles of jazz, funk and hip-hop. Their debut album, “With you” will be released Sept 8th, 2018.

Memories of Tomorrow, Bernabela’s performance for this year’s festival has an eclectic sonic palette that ranges from contemporary Jazz music to Soulful, Funk and Neo-soul with a nod towards Aruban and Caribbean rhythms. Meant to be digested in one sitting, Memories of Tomorrow takes listeners on an immersive, genre-bending journey rooted in the hope for universal harmony. This music is for the world, sidestepping cliché at almost every turn. The instrumentation is saxophone, bass, guitar and drums.

Rebel Rockers Formed in 2000 as the Roots Rebels by Robert Dijkhoff, the band played along various local reggae bands at festivals, cafes and clubs. In 2005 the band released their album “Prophecy”. They played opening acts along international artist such as Israel Vibrations, Third World, Collie Buds, Mr. Vegas. In 2009 Roots Rebels took a break, where drummer Robert Dijkhoff played in bands as Super Natural Selection and Sunshine Reggae band at different festivals across the Netherlands working with Pimski promotions.

Back in Aruba, Robert Dijkhoff met with original band member and singer D’Angelo Ras and formed with new members the Rebel Rockers. These men will certainly give the public a sweet welcome at the entrance of this festival .

The CSJF heats up! Getting in gear for the 12th edition of the Caribbean Sea Jazz Festival, we understand that half the fun is in the anticipation. During the days leading up to the festival, the island of Aruba will once again kick-off the party on several occasions to get into the rhythm. Spontaneous jam sessions by the performing artists, surprise appearances at local venues, and the official Pre-Party held at the Casibari Music Café & Grill. Last year, the Road to CSJF Events had everybody pumping with excitement. A musical performance

at Cas di Cultura, late night dinner shows and the big ceremonial event at Casibari Music Café. This year, you can once again get your first taste as you enter the box office. Right outside the Renaissance Festival Plaza, you will be welcomed by the first act. Why stand in a waiting line, when you can dance? After you purchased your ticket, keep an eye out for our website and Facebook. We will keep you updated about the next pop-up performance in one of Aruba’s many festive locations.

On Wednesday, 19th of September, the 2018 CSJF is officially ushered in at the atmospheric Casibari Music Café & Grill. Set up in a wonderful outside setting amongst the cactuses, you can get your first glimpse of artists from the festival, while enjoying a cold refreshment and tasty food. The Casibari Music Café & Grill will offer a special menu, with juicy BBQed steaks, fresh salads and local specialties, that can be ordered with ór without meat. The great atmosphere and music have made previous years a great success, so make sure you won’t miss out on the fun!

CSJF ART

Through the artisan’s eyes

Last year, the Arts & Crafts Market appeared to be of great success, with locals presenting their hand-made crafts of glass & sand, driftwood and decorated rocks. This year, the Market will make its return to offer a display to Aruba’s finest artisans, for those who like to commemorate Aruba’s most beloved festival by bringing home a unique souvenir. There’s no question where the exhibitors of the Arts & Crafts section

derive their colourful imagery from. Set amongst the setting of the Caribbean sunset, local craftsmen will offer their view on the horizon through their work. Hand-woven bags with embroidery, greeting cards, miniature cunucu houses and organically composed jewellery are just a sample of the plate. Do not forget to visit the CSJF merchandise booth for your festval shirt or hoody and a copy of the famous anniversary book.

In addition to the market, an Art Exposition will be held in our famous Art Gallery. Visual artists will display their photos, paintings and sculptures, some of which are made on the spot! In honour of the CSJF tradition, a collaborative piece will be made on the festival grounds. While you gaze at the art in progress, you can purchase your own lot and try to get your hands on last year’s piece!
