Gala Concert Welcome On behalf of the Principal, Kathy Lloyd-Parker, and the whole community at Chilton Saint James School, it is my pleasure to welcome you to St James’ Church for our annual Chilton Gala Concert. This evening is a celebration of music-making at Chilton. We have a varied and exciting programme of music performed by a range of our top groups. Of particular note is the world premiere performance of Piano Concertino No. 2 by Otago-based New Zealand composer Anthony Ritchie. This piece has been commissioned by the Chilton Parents’ Association especially for the Amadeus Orchestra in recognition of the School Centenary; it is great to have such support from the parent community. The process of learning this piece has been a wonderful educational experience for the Orchestra and a great statement about the importance that the Chilton community places on music. We are extremely fortunate to have Yuwei Shen (Year 13) performing the very challenging solo piano part for us this evening; she has made an extraordinary effort to bring the solo part of this piece to life and should be commended for her dedication and hard work in preparation of the solo piano part. The performance of Czárdás by Vittorio Monti, which opens tonight’s concert, also showcases one of our talented musicians, Shanita Sungsuwan (Year 9), who will be playing the solo violin part. This piece shows a number of impressive extended violin techniques and virtuosic demands on the solo violinist that are seamlessly integrated into a piece that is well-known for its lyrical, soaring melodic writing. Following the short interval, the second half of tonight’s concert is a showcase of the choral talent across the school from the Primary School Vivace Choir, the newly-formed Middle School Choir, and the Seraphim Choir. Chilton is rightly recognised across the Wellington region as a school that excels in choral singing and as a first for this year, the concert will culminate in a combined item for all three choirs and an instrumental ensemble in the performance of Sing Jubilate Deo. I have no doubt that this will be a rousing spectacle of choral music-making to bring the evening to a close. I would like to extend my personal thanks to the girls for their energy, commitment and enthusiasm in preparation for this concert. Thank you also to Reverend Peter Benge and staff at St James’ Church for welcoming us so warmly to St James’ this evening. There are also many members of Chilton staff, itinerant tutors and group directors who have assisted in the preparation for tonight’s concert; furthermore, the Parents’ Association have provided financial assistance to make this evening’s event possible. Many thanks to you all! I hope that you thoroughly enjoy tonight’s Gala Concert. Tom Chatterton Head of Music
