Photo Collage
Photo Collage These images, sometimes funny and sometimes serious, have their own individual stories. Michael knits together unique imagery not commonly seen together in this context. Whether he uses old images in new ways or mixes new images with old, each collage comes together as one complete graphic concept. Hopefully they will bring laughter, beauty or contemplation into your home.
Using the archival GiclĂŠe printing process, Michael has selected a thick and gorgeous archival (400 gsm) Strathmore water color paper to carry the medium. The textured paper is Ph-neutral, optical brightener additive-free and has a special top coating allowing unprecedented precision, contrast and color saturation for a matte medium. Each print is hand signed by the artist and is available in several different sizes. The print is shipped rolled in a protective tube, unmatted and ready for professional framing.

Easter Island
For years, archaeologists have been trying to solve the many mysteries of Easter Island. Here, for the first time ever, we have a photograph highlighting a hidden side of the island. I think it’s safe to say that a piece of the mystery is solved.

Pony Road
If you drive across the vast southwest, you are likely to experience some of the small, lonely roads that split off from the big highways into small towns and rest stops. The land is vast with many roads continuing relatively unchanged for miles. The steady rhythm of passing telephone poles can begin to create a sensation of speeding in your car, yet staying in the same place. I think of the horses as happy companions running alongside your car, there to keep you company on the empty roads.

Carousel at Rest
In Chicago, a horse carriage driver once told me that they have to send their horses to a farm for vacation when they become depressed from pulling a carriage in the city. It never occurred to me that a city horse would need time in the country as well. Clearly, the same goes for carousel animals.

Butterfly Harbor
I think sometimes nature hides its greatest beauty in small things. This image makes me remember a secret place in inner earth where humans have always incorporated nature into their everyday life. By gathering up the wings of giant butterflies that have died of old age, these fishermen’s boats can handle the strongest winds while sailing in perfect silence.

Crafty Beaver
Animal instincts are amazing. Think of what it would look like if a beaver appreciated his picture perfect surroundings as much as we do. I can just see a crafty little beaver going the extra mile and chewing away on raw wood to make these ornamental picture frames into his home.

I like to think that nature has an ultimate plan to keep
herself in balance. The earth has given us oil, but we fight over it, we use it inefficiently and worst of all, we pollute the earth with its residues.

I know nature will survive without us, but I like to think there is some mystical element empowered with supernatural gifts that serves nature only. These two knights represent that to me. It’s as if they have come from the past to make an adjustment for the future.

Transgeneral I have not studied General George Custer, but did talk to a few people who have. So when I came across an old portrait of him pouting intense arrogance, I wanted to change the meaning of the image. Replacing him with a beautiful contemplative woman grounded the image for me. In Custer’s day, it would have been a great insult to his arrogant self to be called a woman. But I enjoy the idea of a woman being strong enough to have held the role of general in a time when their roles were highly restricted.

Modern Woman When I first saw the original picture of this elegant Victorian woman, I was impressed with the composition and the visual integrity of her appearance. Clearly, she is being presented as a wealthy and confident person. As an artist looking at this image, I imagine it would only take a change of wardrobe to bring her forward in time. With that in mind, I isolated and pixilated her figure to allude to our current digital age while leaving her surrounding environment unaltered. My intention was to present her as a modern woman, no matter what era she lived in.

Altered “A few years ago, I had the opportunity to visit the mission at San Juan Capistrano in Southern California. Currently, the ruins of the chapel are located within a quiet but densely populated township. When I walked into one of the chapel annexes, I saw a stone carving of a kneeling monk at the front of an alter. I immediately saw myself as one of the cowboys working the lands 100 years before, coming into this calm sanctuary only to find a statue of a monk. I realized that praying to a stone man would be the last thing on my mind. Perhaps along with the men’s prayerful thoughts, they secretly prayed for companionship and tenderness from a beautiful woman.”

“Imagine taking a peaceful walk along the edge of a calm lake, only to come within eye sight of a magical thing. The beauty of nature mixed with the ethereal quality of a grand architectural structure, this vignette makes me want to discover where the stairs rise to.”

Aristotle’s Library Whenever I look at ruins my first thought is this; “How could people have built such amazing structures with such primitive tools?” I realized this was a very limiting question that always left me wondering what used to stand in place of the ruins rather than what used to take place in the ruins. I wanted to create an image that alluded to the loss of knowledge as well as the loss of architectural beauty. The spiral staircases winding up like DNA helices to the sky creates the impression that the structure actually rose up into the heavens, to a place of higher, unearthly knowledge. The tragedy of the ruins is that we can only get a hint of what used to be, both physically and intellectually.

Showtime There are a lot of twists and turns with this image. The Native Americans dressed for a raid speaks to an eminent attack, yet the village below is not your average encampment. A closer look will show the striped Teepees are actually small carousels with vintage cars beneath the canopies. As attacking rival tribes was a common part of Native American history, I thought it would be fun to mix up the visual meaning of things. For modern soldiers, “Showtime is a phrase for attack or move forward into danger. So, the idea of a war party coming to experience another type of showtime struck me as funny.

Preservation
Usually, putting something natural and fresh into a perfectly sealed container is a great way to preserve resources for another time. But if you think about it, preservation is a forced activity, not natural to the original element being preserved. In this instance the picture represents an entire culture being forced and confined into a small container. The preserves can be seen, but are suspended into inaction. They can neither decay nor become a part of something else.

Closing Act
I have seen a lot of magic shows, but I think this one tops them all. Here, in the “Civil War Theater with an earthen stage in front of a military tent, something mysterious is happening. A body remains intact, yet the man is gone.

Sometimes the meaning of a word with an image can harmonize into something powerful. I think this is one of those images, both beautiful and tragic. The elegant shape of a Teepee on the plains with the deliberately engineered steel lines of the steam engine are icons when viewed individually, yet when combined a more tragic story unfolds.

Statue of History I once visited Ellis Island where I was reminded how much of our country’s population is made up of immigrants or descendants of immigrants. I found it ironic that The Statue of Liberty-depicting a strong, defiant woman dressed in a legal gown, emoting concentrated power-was the first symbolic imagery immigrants would see when arriving to the shores of New York City at the turn of the century. Instead of posturing with laws, this statue of a Native American medicine man holding a peace pipe rises high above the harbor, carrying a less arrogant posture and facial expression while being more spiritually thoughtful. This is the statue I would want to see upon my arrival to the shores of the United States.
