SCULPTURE

There are two common schools of thought in the West surrounding our human origin. The church believes we have always been a reflection of our current human form, whereas science points toward our evolution from the sea. I thought it would be interesting to combine these two conflicting theories onto one platform: the religious “body” and the aquatic-centered theory of evolution.

There is always so much that can be done with an egg shape! I always liked how Rene Magritte explored the paradox potentials of a bird’s egg. This sculpture is my way of adding another paradox to the mix.

People move fast, and parts of our lives can flash past us without ever really noticing. The essence of this piece is to inspire you to look more closely at the things around you, wherever you are.

Aubergine is French for eggplant and is also the name of the purple color of the vegetable. This is my literal translation of both meanings joined together—the sculptural definition of a word.

A wax light bulb melting in a candle holder is meant to play with your sense of time. The antique household candle holder and the 20th century shape of an electric light bulb force two eras together at once.

The architecture of ancient Greek amphitheaters always inspired me. In this piece, I wanted to put my own spin on the classical forum. Since the title is a quote from Shakespeare, I thought it a good fit for my version of this “theater of the mind.

This is an unusual type of sculpture for me to make. Built during a time when I just started 2D collaging, I wanted to see how a more subconscious-oriented composition would look. I built this piece incorporating molds that I had access to in my studio and started with the idea of a Ferris wheel and collaged together various elements from there.

This sculpture was influenced by the art of Kirilian Photography, a process in which an exposure is made of an object while high voltage is applied. The resulting photograph shows the aura or life force of an organic object.

Conceptually, I wanted to make a small environment to reflect the whimsical idea that there could be tiny furniture bugs that were attracted to the floral wallpaper—thus the name indoor spider.

This type of Victorian dress always looked so conservative to me, yet the bustle was put in place to bring specific attention to the butt. I thought it would be amusing to amplify this bustle to a level of absurdity.

Usually, the interior of a book is expressed by the words it contains. But with this book, I wanted to create an internal space within that leads to some unseen, mysterious place, much like the journey of the story or the reckoning of an old memory.

The impact of this tiny little piece can only be exposed through photography. When a flash hits the interior surface of the pipe impression, a curious reflection happens that makes the pipe look three-dimensional.

Although this is another play on words, I think this piece is heavy hearted. I built it to express the irony of a life lived differently —a life where a person intends to use a weapon but finds himself blowing up rather than the weapon itself. In a life such as this, it is likely we would have few aggressors.

I thought it would be fun to make a largescale piece that would bring a calming and centered feeling to a room. I was amused to think what might happen if a pupa absorbed too much tree energy during the metamorphosis and how wonderful the results might be.

This tiny sculpture of a cracked egg spilling a yoke full of bricks plays homage to the brick wall-sitting Humpty Dumpty from my younger years. The story books never talked about what spilled out of the egg after the fall.

A quick double take will expose the simple illusion: a man wearing a bowler hat can be seen in profile within the large mandibles. It is a joy to manipulate a word to accommodate a new idea for a sculpture.

This sculpture was more experimental for me. I did not have a final concept in mind when creating it, but rather held an image of the graphic I wanted to create. It features identical windows arranged to mirror each other. Additionally, the windows are two different inlayed colors, reflecting daylight and nightlight.

Here, geometry is expressed through art. Klein’s Bottle is the name for a surface with only one side where the outer surface merges with the inner surface to become one. I was inspired by the literal translation of the name (Klein’s Bottle) and thus created a tangible expression with this sculpture.

Ah‌banana peels, the delicate but abundant sculpture medium. I had never sculpted with them before, but was curious to play. I don’t know many people who would go to all the trouble to make these, but I am glad I did. I am a sucker for a goofy joke, even if it is my own.

This is one of those rare moments where a very small amount of change in contour completely transforms the meaning of a shape.
