Spatial Practices
Exhibition & Research | BA Architecture | Ruth Lang An ongoing collaborative project | 2019
Architects Architects seeks to reveal the often unacknowledged faces of contemporary architectural practice; framed by their work, not by their gender. It is a statement of equality, not difference. There are no special concessions to femininity or “femaleness; these are architects and orchestrators of extraordinary architectural projects. They just happen to be women.

A huge facet of the architectural profession seems to seems to be visibly and noticeably absent. But why?
Spatial Practices
For example, when trained architects opt to participate in the building industry in a manner which doesn’t involve building, or when practitioners from non-architectural backgrounds operate within the realm of what we deem architecture. Sometimes, it is merely by our own prejudices. These are not uncommon situations, but they tend to affect some sectors of the workforce more than others.
Architects
The part these people play in the process of construction is often hidden - sometimes by the practice name under which they work, which assert anonymous or abstract titles. Sometimes their contribution is overlooked as they have adopted unexpected roles.

The portraits presented here seek to redress this imbalance. They reveal the faces of those whose buildings we are familiar with, and celebrate the centrality of the roles they perform in their creation.

Through the cross-section they represent, these portraits hint at the diversity of roles which is present in the profession, but not yet visible in contemporary practice. It is this richness that we believe deserves celebration.
