Spatial Practices Live Project (Curricular/Extra-curricular) BA Architecture with Croydon’s Placemaking Team | 2018
College Square Croydon’s ‘College Square’ is a new civic space in the heart of central Croydon; a meanwhile intervention that animates an interstitial space in Croydon’s cultural quarter, and gives opportunity for civic life to thrive. The project was initiated as part of a curricular activity of BA Architecture at CSM, and developed as part of the Meanwhile Croydon programme, recipient of NLA (New London Architecture) award in 2019. Project Lead: Croydon Council Project Director: Oscar Brito (Spatial Practices, Central Saint Martins) Designers: Fiona Hartley, Ellie Fox Johnson Support: Mina Fouladi, Olivia Sutherill

Spatial Practices
The aim is to provide usable outdoor furniture to enable creative, civic and communal activities, creating a new public space where the local community may gather, perform, install market stalls; platforms for workshops and activities; becoming a stage for the organised or spontaneous events.Â
Crodyon College Square
This place-making installation characterises and reinforces the civic meaning of a public space by the insertion of two landmark thresholds that mark and define it, and a collection of urban furniture that can be configured and reconfigured in a variety of ways.

Spatial Practices
This project transforms the passage into its full potential as a public space, being particularly targeted to the local young population, such as the students of the adjacent arts college.
Crodyon College Square
Croydon’s College Square is located in a pedestrianised passage connecting East Croydon Station with Croydon College and with the Cultural Quarter, where the Fairfield Hall, South London’s largest arts centre, is located.
