Habitat for Humanity, Calcasieu Area, a nonprofit ecumenical Christian housing ministry, began in 1992 as an affiliate of Habitat for Humanity, International.The goal of Habitat is to eliminate poverty housing in and around the surrounding area. It is our goal “to partner area churches with Habitat as our eyes and ears of the community.” We seek to have faith communities involved in partnering with us by conduct-
ing monthly church relations group meetings in which churches are encouraged to have representatives at each meeting. From these meetings we pull volunteers, home building materials donations and monetary donations. God is the Head and we act as the body in our efforts to provide stability for families. Moss Bluff is one of the larger communities in Calcasieu Parish, but the area is not currently incorporated as a municipality. The unincorporated area known as Moss Bluff that is within Ward One of Calcasieu Parish is estimated to have between 14-15 thousand residents according to Mike Viator, Chairman of the Committee for a Better Moss Bluff. Mr. Viator has been a resident of Moss Bluff since 1976, and has witnessed it’s transformation from a small rural community to a much larger urban area with a growing amount of business and residential development. G20 Summit
First of all let’s see what G20 means. It stands for the Group of 20 Finance Ministers and Central Bank Governors. It is comprised of 19 of the world’s largest national economies and the European Union. Before the G20, there was a G7, then a G22, and a G33.Things do change quickly in the world. One day you’re it and the next day you’re looking for it. So what can we expect from this big summit? • Are we going to hear talk of a global currency start gaining traction? • Is the US going end up shouldering the blame for all the ills of the world, again? • Are the other nations going to start taking steps to stimulate their own economies? • Are we going to see some useless Grandstanding by some beleaguered nation? • Will this turn out to be another media event, with nothing being accomplished? Personally, I think the last option will probably end up being what we see. Of course, it’s not a media event if no one really watches. But you know people; they’ll watch almost anything when they want to take their minds off of their troubles.That could explain why Netflix is trading at or near all-time highs. Go figure.Yeah, you can run, but you can’t hide.

Have you noticed a lot of advertisements for the sale of gold coins, and offers to purchase gold jewelry from the public in exchange for cash? Gold and some other metals such as silver are considered “precious”, because they are relatively rare compared to many other metallic elements. Both gold and silver are commodities that are used to make jewelry, and for a variety of industrial purposes. Gold, and in some cases silver and other precious metals, are traditionally considered as a safe haven and a hedge against inflation. Some folks just feel a greater sense of security when their assets include some tangibles such as gold and silver that historically have a good track record of maintaining value in times of economic uncertainty. Even real estate has lost some luster as an appreciating asset since America’s last housing boom went bust! There has been some evidence of gold fever in our local area. Just last month some outfit was advertising that they were in Lake Charles at the Mall to buy gold and silver from the public. During that same week, Southland Coins and Collectibles held a seminar at the Central Library in Lake Charles about buying and selling gold and silver coins. Malcolm Self is the owner of Southland Coins, and after making an informative presentation to a small group at the library, he answered lots of questions related to precious metals including platinum and palladium. We are going to stick to gold and silver here; that is challenging enough for beginners. This reporter is NOT an expert and was pleased to find Mr. Self’s professionalism and style to be as a teacher or instructor, and nothing like a high pressure salesman. Besides gaining some information that those attending his seminar appeared to find helpful, the group was naturally informed that Southland Coins and Collectables at 4670 Lake Street in Lake Charles buys and sells gold and silver coins in addition to some other items. According to Malcolm Self, determining the numismatic value of rare currency should be left to expert collectors and traders. It’s usually best to purchase popular bullion coins such as Gold and Silver Eagles minted in the United States when acquiring coins strictly for the value of the precious metal they contain. Mr. Self adds that it is a good idea to protect precious metals by storing them at a secure place that is easy to access, such as a safe deposit box at a bank. He does not recommend placing an investment in precious metals (coins or bullion bars) that are to be held in storage by the seller. For those concerned about paper currency, and/or certificates for stocks and bonds becoming worth less, it does not seem wise to trust solely in paper or electronic documentation for precious metal investments that may not be available whenever you do want to take possession. So far this year the spot price of gold has been swinging up to around $1,000 an ounce. The smallest American Eagle gold coins are one-tenth of an ounce; currently these are likely to be sold for well more than $100 dollars a piece. For those that are interested in obtaining some precious metal, but are unable or unwilling to invest hundreds or thousands of dollars for some gold bullion— you may want to consider silver. Silver bullion coins and bars are available for just a fraction of the expense required to purchase an equal weight of their gold counterparts. ‘Junk’ silver coins are another option; 90% silver coins were minted in the U.S. before 1965, and most of this currency was widely circulated until the U.S. went off of gold and silver standards decades ago. Most of these old silver coins were passed around and worn out long ago, so they are unlikely to have much numismatic value to coin collectors. Never the less, as a general rule even when scratched and worn the dimes, quarters, half dollar and one dollar coins minted in the U.S. before 1965 are worth significantly more than face value due to their relatively high silver content as compared to the silver colored change carried around in most pockets and purses today. CAUTION: obtain information from expert sources that you trust before making a decision to purchase, sell, or store any precious metals or currencies.

From The Rough to Beauty By Michelle Abshire
Greetings and Blessings. Let us take the time to be especially thankful this month for the precious gift that God gave us through His Son, Jesus Christ. Jesus died for us that we might have freedom from sin and life and that more abundantly through the shedding of His precious blood and the sacrifice of the cross. And He is Risen to rule and reign in our lives if we allow Him free reign over our hearts and minds. May you realize that He has such a desire to make you beautiful and useful for His Kingdom. I pray you will be blessed and encouraged by the following story I wrote in April of 2008. I have been struck lately by beautiful jewelry with sparkling gems adorning hands, ears and neck lines and have found tears slipping from my eyes while my heart was overwhelmed with a sense of unbelieving awe. I thought about the fact that God sees me as a beautiful jewel, shining forth light from the many different facets He has placed and worked in me as I have allowed Him to work. Memories have been flooding me of the very beginning of this journey with my Savior. How He saw me embedded in sin, darkness and misery and yet He searched for me and drew me with loving-kindness. He saw the potential in me to be a beautiful jewel for His Kingdom. He saw this before I even once started to let Him have His way in my life, much like a miner or a jeweler sees jewels in the rough before they are extracted from the rock they are embedded in. The miner or the jeweler sees the true potential that lays hidden within each precious stone. These precious gems are diligently searched for, found and mined from rock or riverbeds and places that are often dark, lonely, hidden and forgotten. These dirty, rough, unshaped and unpolished gems mined from those dark forgotten places and are then cleaned, cut, fashioned and polished, to bring out every facet of that unique piece to shape it in such away as to bring out its most beautiful potential for reflecting the light and shining forth the glory of that light. The jeweler often works countless hours on each piece with loving care to draw out the pure beauty within the gem so that all can see the beauty of each precious piece. Isn’t this what God does in our lives? Doesn’t He search for us and find us because of His great love for us? Doesn’t He bring us out of those lonely, dark and hidden places? Doesn’t He begin to clean us up and begin to work in our lives to change us to be more like Jesus Christ? Doesn’t He free us from slavery to sin’s bondage that we were once embedded in? Doesn’t His love and light begin to radiate through our lives to others as we begin to walk with Him and trust Him with our lives? It is amazing to me that He sees the true potential that lies within each of us just as the jeweler sees the true beauty in each gem stone even before the work is ever completed. Though I don’t always see the true beauty lying within a heart, He does, and He sees it with a heart filled with unconditional love! His love for us diligently works in our lives to bring about these changes, to conform us to the image of his beloved son, Jesus Christ, that His glory might be shone forth. Two of my favorite gems are the Diamond and the Sapphire and I have learned some things about these two gems in this quest. I can only share a few here because the information is vast. I will start with diamonds: Diamonds are often used for engagement / wedding rings representing a love covenant, which God has made with

us when we are in relationship with His Son, Jesus Christ. We mostly know diamonds to be clear but they actually are found in many different colors signifying the fact that we are all special and unique in our own special way. Did you know that diamonds are the hardest naturally occurring material known (owing to its strong covalent bonding), resistant to acids but will melt in hot steel? Because of this they are also used in industrial areas such as drill heads to bore through rock to reach oil deposits. There is truth that can be gleaned from this knowledge of diamonds: God wants to make us strong in Him and for his kingdom and this is done when we are in a strong binding covenant relationship with Jesus Christ. God wants us to be resistant to the “acid” of our enemy, standing against the lies that the devil would use to influence our lives, to mar the beauty that God has placed in us. God wants us to trust, be obedient and to let our hearts “melt” toward Him in the fires that life will brings us. God wants us to be persistent in our walk with Him “boring” through whatever lies before us to reach the richness of this life in Christ. Life is hard at times and it will bring trials and tribulations and it is the cutting of the diamond together with its hardness that gives cut diamonds their brilliance and fire. James 1: 2-4 tells us “My brethren, count it all joy when ye fall into divers temptations; Knowing this, that the trying of your faith worketh patience. But let patience have her perfect work, that ye may be perfect and entire, wanting nothing.” It is in the trials of life that we come face to face with knowing God and trusting God and letting Him cut away things that do not belong, to enhance and to beautify our lives for His kingdom. A diamond’s brilliance and luster are two of its most valued attributes and it is interesting to note that the science behind the phenomena is the diamond’s great ability to refract light, which means to bend or slow light as it passes through it [refraction is also responsible for rainbows, the splitting of white light into a rainbowspectrum as it passes through a glass prism]. Rainbows are seen in diamonds at times and we know that rainbows are that great symbol of God’s Promise to mankind. When we put our lives in Christ there is such great Promise for our lives and that Promise will radiate from our lives to others because we have Hope in Him. Simeon speaking of Jesus said in Luke 2:30-32 said “For mine eyes have seen thy salvation, Which thou hast prepared before the face of all people; A light to lighten the Gentiles, and the glory of thy people Israel.” And then Jesus said in John 8:12 “Then spake Jesus again unto them, saying, I am the light of the world: he that followeth me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life.” And in Matthew 5:14 Jesus said “Ye are the light of the world. A city that is set on a hill cannot be hid.” When we trust in Him as our Lord and Savior we are no longer our own and His light comes to dwell within us and we are to reflect that light to those around us. The second gem I learned about is the sapphire: Sapphires have many of the same attributes of diamonds, such as the fact that sapphires are characterized by their excellent hardness exceeded only by that of the diamond. Sapphires are also desired in engagement rings because the sapphire symbolizes loyalty, but at the same time it gives expression to people’s love and longing. God is faithful and loyal and He expressed His greatest love toward us when He allowed His beloved Son to die for us while we were yet sinners. It is interesting that the word Sapphire seems to be a corrupted form of Sanipriya a Sanskrit word [Sani = Saturn and Priya = Beloved]. Saturn, the 6th planet, also represents the number for man and coupled with the second half of the meaning Priya, which means ‘Beloved,’
Naturally, some Moss Bluff residents will have concerns regarding possible tax implications and other conditions of incorporation that some would view as undesirable. At the time this article was written, there does not appear to be any organized effort in Moss Bluff to discourage incorporating the area into a city chartered by the state. makes me think of Ephesians 1:6 “To the praise of the glory of his grace, wherein he hath made us accepted in the beloved.” We are God’s most special creation. He spoke all other creation into existence but man He formed from the dust of the earth and breathed the very life of God into him. Yes, out of all of God’s vast creation we were created in the very image of God and He has accepted us in the beloved, Jesus Christ. How awesome is that? Sapphires have been referred to as blue gems in general but actually come in many colors just as the diamond does and the color blue represents trust and truth and we know that Jesus is the Way, the Truth and the Life and God would have us walk in His truth. It is His truth that will make us free. Some sapphires are heat-treated or otherwise enhanced to improve their appearance and color, the same fires of life God often uses to conform us to the image of his Son. 1 Peter 1:6-7 tells us “Wherein ye greatly rejoice, though now for a season, if need be, ye are in heaviness through manifold temptations: That the trial of your faith, being much more precious than of gold that perisheth, though it be tried with fire, might be found unto praise and honour and glory at the appearing of Jesus Christ:” Do you feel as if God could never use you for His kingdom? Do you feel as if you are weak and can never become strong and have the strength of God’s character in your life to bore through all life’s turmoil’s, to reach that place of richness in Christ? Do you feel as if you could never be that “beautiful Diamond” or “lovely Sapphire” showing forth His light and glory? Remember ALL THINGS ARE POSSIBLE WITH GOD! God can do miracles in your life and change your life to carry His strength and reflect the life of His Son, Jesus Christ. Remember God loves you and you are special. He searched for you, He found you, He loved you while you were yet lost, He loved you before you ever knew Him, He saw you then and He sees you now, He brought you into his marvelous light and He sees the potential in you to become all you can become in Christ. The process sometimes is not easy but if you will trust Him it is well worth letting Him bring peace, joy and complete wholeness into your life. Yes, He can make you strong for His kingdom and into that beautiful jewel showing forth beautiful facets of light and glory. He desires this and He will finish the work He has started in you and He will make you both strong and beautiful for His kingdom as you allow Him to work in your life. Ecclesiastes 3:11a tells us “He hath made every thing beautiful in his time” and Isaiah 54:11b-12 says “behold, I will lay thy stones with fair colours, and lay thy foundations with sapphires. And I will make thy windows of agates, and thy gates of carbuncles, and all thy borders of pleasant stones.” You are His and He has loved you with an Everlasting Love. Trust Him to make you strong and beautiful for His kingdom.

Harold had always attended church; however, he did not know what it was like to have a personal relationship with our Father. In Harold’s book, from Cancer to Christ, he shares his story of how he had always attended church, while assuming everything was all good, but in reality, it wasn’t. Harold, like most people, stated in his book that he was going to church for all the wrong reasons. Harold’s testimony expressed that he was walking in his own flesh and for his own selfish needs. He did not realize that for most of his life, he was not walking in the divine plan that God had designed for his life. Like Harold, we must all learn to allow our flesh to die, so that Jesus Christ can live within us.We must learn to be self-less to be Christ-full; in order to be filled and lead by the Holy Spirit, which gives us our divine revelation of our Lord’s will for our life. Harold now realized his divine purpose, as he was reborn again and his soul was saved. As Harold battled his cancer with a faithful heart to serve the Lord, he shared his testimony with everyone he would come into contact with, regardless of the physical pain he was enduring. His cancer gave him a mission, a purpose, a reason to live one more day. He helped spread the Word of God to many people; however, he was not satisfied with what he had accomplished in his last 2 years. Harold decided to write a book sharing his testimony, so that what he had been through would not be in vain and his story could still live to convict, convert and change the lives of many people who are going through the same thing. At the end of the day, we have a choice when we are going through hardships; we can curse God or we can praise God.We can choose to walk in the ways of the world or we can choose to submit to His divine plan for our lives, so that we can experience the abundant life that He has promised us and so that we can live with the peace that Jesus Christ left us at the cross. I highly recommend that every counselor and doctor that deals with cancer victims recommend this book to their patients: it is a book of hope and encouragement. And it began dancing backward on its tail and laughing in my startled Dad’s face. “HEH, HEH, HEH . . . HEH, HEH, HEH!” it laughed. In case you don’t know, Flipper was a friendly, cute, adorable, and playful, bottle-nosed dolphin starring in one of my favorite TV shows. And there he was, dancing backward on his tail, laughing with glee, and inches away from Dad’s shocked face. Before Dad could collect his wits long enough to think of what to do, Flipper gave a final high twisting leap backwards and re-entered the water, nose first. With a parting wave goodbye from his tail, Flipper slapped the water and disappeared from our sight, never to be seen again. I protested as strong as I dared, when Dad finally made it back to shore and told me to get into the car that we were going home. I really wanted to stay to catch more fish and just between you and I, see if Flipper would return for an encore performance. I didn’t stand a chance. Dad grabbed a hold of one of my ears and led me to the waiting car. This is the only time in my life, I had ever seen my mentor and favorite outdoorsman leave the water when the fish were still biting. As awful as the trip may sound, please remember neither Dad, nor I, would trade it for anything else in the world or if given a choice, would not have had it happen in any other way. It’s true; we could have done what most city folk still do and remained safely at home, boxed in by the four walls of our house. But if we had, we wouldn’t have received the unexpected and wonderful gift, awaiting us. Over the years I have grown to realize just how precious a good memory is. WHAT A MEMORY MEANS TO ME It was high noon when my father unintentionally became entangled with two vicious forces of nature, the raging tidal current, attempting to wash him out to sea and what we both had thought, was one of the largest sharks alive, trying to eat him alive. The two teamed up to force him to, literally, fight for his life. I was the only witness. Whenever this story springs to mind I find myself still thanking God, for helping my dad survive the day and for letting me be there to see it. Let me take a moment to ponder over what I have learned about memories. If we use them correctly they can be our strength, if not, our weakness. When they are all lumped together and some are even buried deep in our sub-consciousness, the collection forms a big part of the person, whom we think we are today. Amazingly, they also provide the strong glue binding our souls to one another. They also act as silent sentinels always standing on guard, ready to warn us of imminent danger or more simply, not to make the same mistake twice, to choose wisely. The comfort and security they provide is something we take for granted. Have you ever wanted to touch a burning flame, a second time? Of course not, from being burnt once before, you know it still causes unbearable pain and is to be avoided. Memories are strict teachers and excellent leaders, full of experience. For example, our memory reminds us of the feelings of the joy and hurt we received in the past and to know the difference between the love and the hate, in this world. I can go on and on about this, but instead, allow me to leave you with a parting-pondering thought to consider. I’ll begin with a question. I’m sure you know the answer to it. What did

Corporate America Looks to You for a Loan Many of the world’s largest companies are based in America , yet they have operations that span the globe and collectively earn enormous amounts of money from a wide range of commercial activities. Interestingly though, despite their own profitmaking ventures, large corporations still seek out investors to help finance some of their activities. Two ways in which they do this are by issuing stock, which represents ownership in the company, or by selling bonds, which puts you — the individual investor — in the position of making a loan to a big company. When a company issues bonds, these “loans” help with the company’s long-term financing for capital expenditures and acquisitions. Investors who buy bonds enter an agreement with the company stating it will pay back the face value of the bond at maturity (a pre-determined date in the future) plus a fixed rate of interest. This interest rate is known as the nominal, or coupon rate, and payments are often made every six months throughout the life of the bond. Its face value, also called the “par” value, is typically listed in multiples of $1,000. In contrast to a stockholder, who actually gains ownership in a company by purchasing stock, bondholders are creditors of
the issuing corporation. An investment in a bond literally represents a loan to the company. While stockholders typically look for the price of their shares to go up, bondholders receive interest payments on the money they have loaned out. Even though there are other ways to profit from stocks and bonds, “owning” versus “loaning” is the basic difference between the two types of investments. Corporate bonds can be a valuable component in a well-rounded investment portfolio. Some of the many benefits they offer include the following: Regular income — If you buy a bond and hold onto it until maturity, you will have a pretty good idea of how much you will get back from your investment because of the regular interest payments you will receive. Reliability — Credit-rating agencies rate corporate bonds based on several factors relating to the issuing company. When issuing bonds, a company that has a good credit history and makes principal and interest payments to bondholders on a timely basis will typically receive a good credit rating. Bonds with strong ratings historically have had minimal credit risk. Diversification — Companies from a wide range of industrial sectors and geographic locations offer corporate bonds, giving

Concerned citizens are planning to come together for rallies in hundreds of cities and towns across the United States on tax day to send a message to our government that they are “Taxed Enough Already”. If taxes and fees levied by federal, state, and local governments were all collected up front each year, it would take every penny of the first several months of income away from most individuals, families, and small business owners. Since it is common to gradually pay these taxes throughout the year in the form of payroll deductions and sales taxes when making purchases, most people do not realize the tremendous amount of money that the average U.S. citizen gives up to the government. Of course some taxation is necessary to provide funding for essential infrastructure and public services such as transportation, safety, and defense. Citizens should expect to contribute significantly toward the common good, and do their fair share. However, it appears that a large number of tax payers in America are tired of putting up with a heavy tax burden that appears to be on it’s way up at a time when PORK (wasteful government spending) is making and breaking new world records. Interest rate risk refers to the possibility that a bond’s market value will change in response to interest rate changes. A bond’s price moves in the opposite direction of interest rates. As rates rise, the price drops. Again, if you hold a bond until maturity, you won’t have to even worry about interest rate risk. But it’s a consideration should you ever think about selling your bond early. Bonds also entail credit risk — the risk credit rating agencies attempt to gauge when they issue ratings on bond issues. But despite the risks involved, many investors typically view bonds as a balancing addition to their portfolio. And aside from just its simple investment value, a bond represents your chance to lend a hand to the progress of some of our great American companies.

Gardening: By Derrick Singleton Many gardeners wonder if they can save seeds from plants grown in their gardens and avoid the expense of buying seed the following year. The answer is yes and no. It can be done, but if you don’t know what you are doing, you may end up wasting your time and effort. The key to successful seed saving lies in knowing what crops and varieties bear seed that is likely to produce plants that are similar to the parent plants. After all, the idea behind saving tomato seeds is to get good-quality eating tomatoes. Understanding a few terms will be useful in determining what seed is savable. Hybrid seed is produced through controlled pollination using two specific varieties that have been inbred, or self-pollinated, for many generations to produce particular traits. The parent plants may have weak growth or other poor characteristics, but when crossed, their seed produces desirable plants. Only the first generation of seed resulting from the cross of the parent plants, the F1 hybrid generation, will produce the exact combination of desired traits. Future generations may revert to the undesirable traits of the parent plants. For this reason, seed saved from hybrid plants will generally produce plants that are inferior. Hence the first rule of seed saving - do not save seed from hybrid plants. This does not mean that seed from all non-hybrid plants can be saved and planted with good results. If the non-hybrid is selfpollinated, the seed will produce plants similar to the parent plants and is a good candidate for saving. Some popular garden plants that are also self-pollinated are tomatoes, peppers, beans, peas, and lettuce. If the plant is pollinated by neighboring plants of a different variety, as cucumbers, corn, and squash can be, any seed produced will be of mixed parentage and will produce mixed results. Since pollen can travel a long distance from other garden with insects or on the wind, it would be wise to limit your seed saving efforts to self-pollinated, non-hybrid varieties. Once you determine that you have some plants whose seeds are worth saving, you need to harvest and store the seed properly. Fruit must be fully ripe; for tomatoes that means riper than you’d like to eat it. Peppers may begin to shrivel when they are completely ripe, but don’t wait until the fruit begins to rot. Remove the seed from the flesh and allow it to dry.Tomato seeds can be separated by allowing the pulp to ferment with a little water for a few days after which the seeds can be strained off and dried. Seeds such as beans and peas that grow in pods are simple to process. Pick the pods as they dry but before they shatter, and remove the seed.Allow it to dry thoroughly in warm spot out of direct sun, then package the seed in envelopes or jars, storing it in a cool, dry spot. If using glass jars for storage, check the side of the jars for condensation after a few days of storage. If it is present, dry the seeds some more before storing them. Pg. 9

What is Easter? On Easter Sunday, Christians celebrate the resurrection of the Lord, Jesus Christ. It is typically the most well-attended Sunday service of the year for Christian churches. Week of Easter. Lent for Eastern Orthodox churches begins on Monday and Ash Wednesday is not observed. Because of Easter’s pagan origins, and also because of the commercialization of Easter, many Christian churches have begun to refer to it as Resurrection Day. The biblical account of Jesus’ death on the cross, or crucifixion, his burial and his resurrection, or raising from the dead, can be found in the following passages of Scripture: Matthew 27:27-28:8; Mark 15:16-16:19; Luke 23:26-24:35; and John 19:16-20:30. Although Easter is probably the oldest Christian celebration aside from the Sabbath, it wasn’t always the same as what people currently think of when they look at Easter services.The earliest known observance, Pasch, occurred between the second and fourth centuries.These celebrations commemorated both Jesus’ death and his resurrection at once, whereas these two events have been split up between Good Friday and Easter Sunday today.
The pink shirt is the signature look of one of Lake Charles’ newest organizations, theYoung Women’s Advisory Committee (YWAC). Similar to most community organizations, theYWAC is dedicated to serving the Lake Area. This group, however, is taking this service to a new and unique level- it aims to empower young female leaders, to promote community involvement and to call attention to and fight social injustice.The group’s plan is to share all that they learn and all their passion with fellow students and peers.These young women hope to use the ripple effect to the benefit of all. The Southwest Louisiana AIDS Council ( SLAC) got the idea for YWAC when they realized the need to reach young women about important health issues. SLAC’s idea was put into action in Aug.2008.They posted flyers and online invitations and public service announcements hit the airwaves and news media. The Oct.23 kick-off meeting, at Central School, was a success, with 17 young women from Barbe and Sulphur High schools attending. Currently,YWAC is comprised of 20 dedicated teenage girls from various schools in Calcasieu Parish, and the group is hoping other area high schools will join in. “We are also thinking of expanding membership to include college women, so that there is a continuum of effort and a chance to grow with the experience,” said Kelli Barnes, SLAC program director andYWAC advisor. “We all wanted to make a difference in our community, but didn’t know where to start.This group has given us the guidance to take the initiative in the right direction,” says member Melissa Duong, 17. YWAC first started a change fundraiser called “Buckets of Hope.” White collection buckets have been placed at local businesses including SportsCenter USA,Wing Tai Oriental Store, Paradise Smoothie in Sulphur, Cypi’s Cake Box and Paradise Florist.The buckets will remain there until summer of 2009, and all proceeds will benefit SLAC. TheYWAC also volunteered at the SLAC Ribbons of Hope gala this past December, hosted an event at a local shelter and conducted a free public health seminar. Seminars will be a regular part of monthly meetings and will cover an array of topics, such as women’s health, safety and well-being. “This is just the start,” says 16 year-old member Lenzi Hebert,“ We have big goals for this group and for this year.” The girls in the group want to address issues in the community that are of great importance to women, such as domestic violence, rape and HIV/AIDS.YWAC plans to participate in local events and host several community projects. Overall, the group is committed to making a positive impact on the community.The girls are all open to learning and realize that knowledge is power.
