Originally serving as a Confederate States blockade runner, the USS Tennessee (later renamed SS Republic) was seized by the Union in April of 1862 during the bloody Battle for New Orleans. She began her service by delivering soldiers and supplies up the Mississippi river in a battle to cut the South in half. The USS Tennessee subsequently became Admiral David G. Farragut’s flagship during these Mississippi operations. It was, in fact, aboard the Tennessee that Farragut received word about some of the important Union victories, including the defeat for Robert E. Lee at Gettysburg, the fall of Vicksburg and the capture of Port Hudson, Louisiana.

LIBERTY SEATED HALF DOLLARS Single Coin Sets Recovered from the SS Republic The 1860-O, 1861-O and 1861-P half dollars were struck from silver discovered in the famous Comstock Lode of 1859, which was the first major U.S. discovery of silver ore. These coins were also minted the very year Lincoln was elected making them rich with American history. The condition is incredible after being lost to the depths of the Atlantic Ocean for 138 years! CIVIL WAR “BLUE & GRAY” 1861 HALF-DOLLAR COLLECTION Two Countries, Two Mints, Two Coins…One Design Among the bottles, trunks and other artifacts found in the shipwreck, Odyssey discovered a fortune of silver half dollars intended to help New Orleans and the Southern economy get back on their feet. What’s remarkable is that this spectacular cache included coins minted by both North and South during 1861, the year the Civil War began! “Seated Liberty” silver half dollars had been issued annually by the Philadelphia Mint in the North and the New Orleans Mint in the South since the late 1830s. The Confederate attack on Fort Sumter, however, shifted what was standard practice before the Civil War into a unique situation where two mints were striking the same coins for two different governments! For the South, minting Seated Liberty silver half dollars was a desperate attempt to support the war effort by any means necessary. Without distinct coins of their own design and with the pressing need to procure arms and ammunition weighing heavily upon them, the leaders of the Confederacy decided that it would be “business as usual” at the New Orleans Mint. In what may be considered the ultimate act of defiance, the Government of the CSA continued to strike coins emblazoned with the Federal eagle and the legend “United States of America” at the New Orleans Mint as long as silver bullion was available! As armies clashed on the battlefield, hulking steam-powered coin presses in both Philadelphia and New Orleans thundered away, spewing out virtually identical silver coins. The Philadelphia-minted 1861 (struck without mintmarks) and New Orleans-minted 1861-O silver half dollars recovered from the SS Republic and presented in the “Blue & Gray” 1861 Half Dollar Collection define the tragic nature of the Civil War -- a war fought not only by “two sides of the same coin”, but by two sides minting the same coins! a. FRANKLIN HALF DOLLARS This coin was the last half dollar minted in .900 pure silver during its entire run from 1948-1963. It’s the first circulating coin to feature a real person other than a U.S. President, and features Founding Father Benjamin Franklin on the obverse and the Liberty Bell on the reverse. This Franklin half dollar was short-lived and disappeared to make way for the 1964 Kennedy Half Dollar.

b. STANDING LIBERTY QUARTERS These coins were struck by the U.S. Mint from 1916 to 1930 in .900 silver. The original design of the coin was the subject of some controversy. The design was modified in 1917 to cover Liberty’s exposed breast, and the reverse received a new arrangement of the stars, with the eagle moved higher. c. BARBER DIMES Barber or Liberty Head dimes were minted between 1892 and 1916 and are composed of .900 silver. They were designed by Charles E. The dime featured a wreath of American agricultural products with the words “ONE DIME” in the center.

Also known as the “Indian head” nickel, this coin is a copper nickel five cent piece struck by the U.S. Mint from 1913 to 1938. It was designed by sculptor James Earle Frasier.
