COMMUNITY NEWS LETTER FROM THE EDITOR This quote, by Zig Ziglar, a famous motivational speaker, speaks for itself. Make this month a special month where you do that little extra for your neighbor, friend, or even better, someone you do not even know. Since Lucy and I have purchased BYLINE HERE the business, we have joined a local Rotary Club. The Rotary motto is SERVICE ABOVE SELF, which says it all. Charity has become a very important part of our lives and of our magazines. Besides us covering or sponsoring almost every event and cause that comes along, and believe me, there are many, this month we were able to help so many kids in distress, that I still feel the afterglow. We will all miss the Ringling Bros. Circus, which is shutting down due to lack of attendance.

Your Community Magazine

But FELD also puts on the DISNEY ON ICE shows at the local arenas which all the younger kids just love. We were able to trade a full page in each magazine for 83 tickets to next weekend’s shows, for a total of 189 tickets. We have donated all these tickets to non-profit groups that shelter kids in distress. We also were fortunate enough to give away over $20,000 in clothing to these same groups of children in distress. For us, this month was by far and away, the most gratifying we have been involved with the magazines. We both hope that this will just be the beginning and that all our local businesses will support us going forward. Our staff has worked hard to bring you the most enjoyable viewing experience possible knowing that everyone is looking for the one thing that matters to them. We hope we have achieved that. Thank you.

People do not care how much you know until they know how much you care

Enjoy The Magazine

My view from the City Council BY RoBeRt S. WeinRoth

the city of boca raton is a world-class city having reinvented itself over the past 25 years. the redevelopment of the downtown has created a vibrant core where residents and visitors can enjoy theatre, concerts, fine dining, and many other family friendly activities. as more people visit and live within our downtown we are being challenged to provide reliable alternatives to the influx of private passenger vehicles entering our city each day. with over 250,000 vehicles coming into our city from the north, south and west, our challenge is to ensure traffic congestion does not overwhelm our residents making it difficult to enjoy the new urban landscape. the ultimate goal is to give residents the option of leaving their vehicles home (or, in the not too distant future, to reduce the number of vehicles required to maintain maximum mobility). the city council has embraced several tools for making this a reality. on a land-planning basis, in collaboration with residents and developers, we are executing the concept of “planned mobility.” Planned mobility, in simple terms, means creating areas with multiple uses (residential, retail and office sharing the same space). When employment, retail, recreation and one’s residence are in close proximity, public transportation can provide the vehicle for moving people from place to place. this can take the form of circulators, trains, buses, ride-share opportunities or it can be designing safe and convenient areas for pedestrians (and bicyclists) to move from place to place (creating a walkable cityscape). we can already see this concept unfolding at Park Place (adjacent to the Office Depot HQ on N Military Trail) and elsewhere in our city. Another exciting change in moving people is coming with the roll-out of fully autonomous vehicles. www.bocasbestMagazine.coM

recently, Mayor Haynie and i attended an automated Vehicles summit and left the two-day meeting with a mixture of excitement and terror due to the implications of what had been discussed. Florida has become one of the most welcoming venues for autonomous vehicles. During the last legislative session, Hb 7027, sponsored by state senator Jeff brandes (a strong proponent of autonomous technology), won unanimous approval and was signed by Governor Scott, making Florida the first state to allow self-driving vehicles on its roads. autonomous vehicles offer the promise of reduced traffic congestion and less land allocated for parking. with the implementation of autonomous vehicles, ownership will be replaced, in many cases, by subscriptions. Much like the ride-share services provided by taxis, limousines, uber and Lyft, people would no longer need to insure, garage or maintain a vehicle (which most of us use less than 10% of each day). in the not too distant future, families will not need multiple vehicles to ensure maximum mobility, parking garages will be re-purposed given the reduced need for spaces to park and “distracted drivers” would become a thing of the past! it all sounds like something out of the Jetsons but it is going to be a reality before our children, currently in Kindergarten, are ready to get behind the wheel. Level 3-vehicle automation is due to be available in 2018 whereby the driving functions are sufficiently automated to allow a driver to engage in other activities. Level 4-vehicle automation will follow soon thereafter allowing the vehicle to be driven without a human driver! in the mean time, we will continue to work to ease congestion with signal timing adjustments and review our roads to see where greater efficiencies can be gained.

Magazines.

Clean, crisp, beautiful. Today’s world is filled with noise, blinking lights and distractions. Print advertising utilizes all that technology has to offer to deliver targeted messages that capture the imagination through traditional storytelling and the surrounding silence allows readers to stay engaged without moving on to the next blinking light. This makes them perfect for building brand and product awareness. Magazines also work to build trust; use them to achieve credibility with consumers. Magazine advertising can be used to lead customers to a more conversion-friendly platform like digital.

It’s all very exciting and, together; we will ensure traffic doesn’t overshadow the excitement of enjoying our vibrant downtown. question? contact Lucy@bocasbestMagazine.coM or caLL 1.561.244.9912

Beware “The Dirty Dozen” Beginning in the early weeks of tax filing season, the Internal Revenue service (“IRs”) releases its top twelve (12) scams targeting taxpayers in its reports titled “the Dirty Dozen”. the “Dirty Dozen” targets scams most detrimental to the tax system and taxpayers alike. this year, you can be certain the IRs is most concerned about phishing schemes and identity theft, along with recurring topics identified in prior years. While the top twelve (12) 2017 scams will be published over the coming weeks, all taxpayers should be aware of the risks they face due to the following “scams”:

FIRST TIMERS ONLY

1. Phishing – the unlawful attempt to obtain sensitive and confidential information through the use of fraudulent communication, whether by email, mail or by telephone, including fraudulent requests for personal data such as user names, passwords, and credit card details.

3. unscrupulous Return Preparers – beware of return preparers who promise significant refunds based on credits, deductions, or expenses that may have no basis in fact. beware of scam artists posing as tax preparers who do not provide a copy of your return, and whose final product is not in accordance with the information you provided. Filing a false return and securing unlawful refunds can result in civil and criminal penalties. 4. oVDP Assistance – taxpayers with foreign bank accounts who have not disclosed their existence and are otherwise required to do so, may fall prey to unscrupulous tax preparers. because of the threat of significant penalties, taxpayers may be targeted for exorbitant fees.

5. overstating Deductions, expenses and credits – this is a continuing “Dirty Dozen” issue. Taxpayers who file returns reflecting overstated deductions and expenses or understating their income may be subject to both civil and criminal penalties. 6. tax shelters – while less prevalent than in the 1970’s through 1990’s, tax shelter matters still concern the IRs. If you have participated in a shelter, you may need to provide certain disclosures to avoid penalties. 7. credit overstatements – the IRs is vigilant in policing credit overstatements for education credits, research and development credits, earned income tax credits, and child care related credits. be sure you retain all required documentation. more information on the annual “Dirty Dozen” list can be found on the IRs website and in financial columns throughout the tax filing season. Taxpayers should choose their tax preparers wisely. taxpayers are legally responsible for what is in their return, even if they use a third-party tax preparer to electronically file. Make sure you know your preparer’s credentials and reputation. be sure they possess the requisite skills to assist you with your own unique tax facts and circumstances. making a smart choice in selecting your tax preparer insures you are properly meeting your tax filing and payment obligations. Get fit at any age By Rachel Galvin

J

ust because you get older doesn’t mean you can’t be in good shape. In fact, you may be able to be fitter than you were before … if you have the right nutrition and training. That is where Facility for personal training comes in. Open for six years now, this training center is an oasis for those seeking fitness and health. They specialize in women in men over 40, working with many clients who have various health issues.

The results they see come down to trainers who know what they are doing. Clients are not left to their own devices like in a big box gym. They work one-on-one with a customized plan with a trainer who knows their history and goals. Each trainer is highly qualified with a minimum of a four-year degree in exercise science, Physiology or Kinesiology. Many were professional athletes themselves. “This training facility is at the top level,” says trainer Rob Nessler, who adds he has never worked in a place where trainers have as much training. Trainers must “audition” and then complete 100 to 200 hours of internship before they are even hired so they can learn the specialized system here, called DVNS, which stands for Dynamic Variable Muscular stimulation. this system was created by Dr. Barry Steinberg, the brother of owner Fred Steinberg. Each trainer has access to the doctor for any special medical questions they may have about their client so the plan can be tweaked as needed. “They have the best trainers here. It is clean with great vibe.” says client Howard Mofshin. The fitness center also has the latest and best equipment, utilizing top brands like Hoist that move with the body. “Anybody can buy good equipment but it is hard putting it together with the right trainer with the right equipment. You have to look at the whole picture,” says Fred, who opened this business with a silent partner six years ago after getting tired of retirement. “You can only sit at Starbucks for so long,” he laughs, saying the concept arose because both enjoyed working out and thought it would be great to develop a business around one of their passions. His daughter, Narisa, joined the family business. She is 38 and Fred is 67 and both are in excellent shape, great examples of what clients can expect from the training. “At our age,” he said, “it is not about being a bikini model. It is about longevity, strength, ability and flexibility.” Whether you want to build muscle, lose weight or just be able to do basic activities like walk into the store, get out of the chair or lift groceries, their program can help.

Facility Gym is located at 1200 S. Rogers Circle, Suite # 3 in Boca Raton. They are open from 5:30 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Friday, 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday and closed on Sunday. For more information, call 561-997-8348 or visit www.thefacilitybocaraton.com.

Put More You into Your Wedding Day BYLINE HERE

A

wedding day is filled with symbolic tradition, from varied religious customs to the never-ending circle reflected in the rings and the types of flowers accentuating the celebration. Even with all the traditional rituals to consider, nearly every bride and groom can find ways to give their special day some unique touches that reflect their personality and love. Music sets the mood for every wedding, and it’s an easy place to put your own spin on the celebration. Whether you forgo the traditional bridal march entirely or simply look for an arrangement that gives an updated twist to the classic version, let guests know this isn’t your average wedding by setting the festivities against a soundtrack that lets your true character shine. The wedding party is intended to be a collection of those nearest and dearest to the bride and groom, who help ensure the day goes off without a hitch and who lead fellow revelers in celebrating the start of the new couple’s life together. That being said, there’s no reason this group must be limited to women on her side and guys on his, or even that it’s limited to humans – a beloved pooch can make for an adorable ring-bearer, after all. Photography is an essential element of your big day, but think beyond the images you’ll capture throughout the wedding and reception. you at various stages of life, together as a couple and with loved ones (perhaps even some you’re honoring in memoriam). You can display these at a table with the guest book, as part of the table centerpieces, or even on the gift table. Or take things digital and load all your images into a slide show set to music. Make favors meaningful. Forgo more common items like bubbles and chocolate, and instead send a little of yourself home with your guests. Maybe it’s a memento from a place with special meaning to you both, or a bottle opener shaped like a bicycle to represent the way you met. Just think about the moments and things that define you as a couple and do some searching online. You’ll probably be surprised by how quickly the options pile up. Serve up a menu that shows guests more about your life together. Your loved ones can order basic beef or chicken anywhere. Instead, give them a glimpse into you. Make your main course the same food you enjoyed on your first date or during another monumental moment in your courtship. Or plan the entire menu around a region that you hold close to your heart. Weddings are filled with traditions, but that doesn’t mean you can’t put your own touches on the day for a special event filled with memories that are uniquely your own. “Varicose Veins are more than skin deep”

BY RacHEL GaLvIN

O

ur body does so much day in and day out, and most of that work goes unseen. our veins have an important job, carrying our blood back and forth to our heart only to be pumped out again. as we age, this daily toil can become more apparent as veins reveal themselves like road maps, especially on our legs. when they become deeper and wider, such as the case of varicose veins, that is when it can be cause for concern.

not only can varicose veins be unsightly, but they also can be a signal that something else is happening within the body to cause them. each vein has a tiny valve that helps it do its job, but there can be leaks and the valve can malfunction causing the blood to back up and the vein to bulge. sometimes, having varicose veins can mean the person with them has cardiovascular problems. Many people will seek out a doctor to get rid of the unsightly veins, but sometimes the doctor they consult with is more of a plastic surgeon or dermatologist and does not probe deeper to understand the root cause of the issue. but Dr. ariel soffer, M.D., Facc, knows “varicose veins are more than skin deep.” He is board certified in cardiovascular disease and, for over 20 years, he has focused his practice on aspects of the cardiovascular system, especially varicose veins. according to company spokesperson adam Kustin, people who have issues with their veins often complain of achy legs or numbness, among other symptoms. in order to ascertain the underlying problem, patients who come into our office undergo an ultrasound. “you and i can walk in and both have the same degree of problems with our veins] and there is no way to tell [the underlying issue] based on the surface,” says Kustin. “it is important to see a doctor.” www.bocasbestMagazine.coM

sclerotherapy, we inject a saline solution and the blood is magically redirected. it depends on the severity,” he says. “the laser is super accurate and highly effective. it is a low risk procedure.” compression socks might be used in recovery as well, Kustin adds.

He said that one of the big culprits is inactivity. “when you are on your feet eight to 12 hours a day, not moving ... inactivity is the biggest culprit, or sitting with legs crossed...it also can be genetic,” he says. Mr. Kustin explained that exercising and elevating your legs periodically will help with blood flow. He also recommended compression socks, which he said act like a reverse funnel redirecting blood to the heart. also weight management is important. the procedure to fix varicose veins can be relatively simple. Most procedures involve closing the vein, sometimes repairing it. “if it is a secondary or tertiary vein, we can close it up; a laser heats it and clamps it shut. if we do

besides working with veins, the soffer Health institute also handle other cardiovascular issues, including primary care, everything from allergies to working with weight management. they work with senior care and also have a concierge service, which allows patients basically to “pay for play,” getting special services like having no wait time, obtaining greater access to the doctor, getting an annual physical and more. Dr. soffer also keeps his staff up-to-date with the latest medical developments and shares his knowledge on an abc news Health segment called “Dr. soffer’s second opinion,” and elsewhere. Soffer Health Institute began in Aventura and now there are several locations, including one in Deerfield Beach at 1877 W. Hillsboro Blvd. They plan to open a Weston location next. Members of the staff speaks Spanish, Russian, Hebrew, Creole and Portuguese. For more information, call 305-792-0555 or visit www.sofferhealth.com.

Simplify Fish Fridays with Sheet Pan Dinners

(Family Features) If you’re observing Lent, Friday fish dinners could be in your future, but that’s no reason to feel limited by what you can cook. Seafood pairs well with all sorts of flavors – from chili seasoning to lime extract – and bakes quickly on a sheet pan with minimal cleanup. Follow these simple tips from Dr. Wendy Bazilian, McCormick Health Advisor and Registered Dietitian, to get your family asking for good-for-you proteins like salmon and shrimp all year long: ● While lemon is a great complement to seafood, think about pairing with other citrus flavors like orange and lime. Try marinating shrimp in a mixture of lite coconut milk, lime extract, ginger and red pepper. ● Add colorful vegetables like zoodles or asparagus to your sheet pan to boost both seafood and vegetable servings. You don’t need a spiralizer to make zoodles because many grocery stores offer pre-made zoodles in the produce section. ● Keep shrimp in your freezer to pull out for stir fries, pastas or this Coconut Lime Shrimp with Zoodles recipe. Explore more recipes to enjoy during Lent, spring and beyond at McCormick. com, or look for McCormick Spice on Facebook and Pinterest.

armer weather is often welcome for a variety of reasons, but there’s something nearly irresistible about enjoying a meal outdoors. Whether you plan to gather on the patio or pack a picnic for the park, dining al fresco is an easy way to turn a meal into a full-fledged event. Begin your meal with chicken sandwiches crafted on the grill and a seasonal pasta salad on the side then finish it with a glass of white wine and a dessert made for al fresco entertaining – cheesecake topped with fresh berries and mint. For more al fresco recipes and entertaining tips, visit Culinary.net. Pair Like a Pro

When it comes to pairing wine with food, even experts agree that desserts can pose a challenge. A wide variety of flavor combinations can make it hard to find the perfect selection to serve with your sweet treat. While there’s no exact science to wine pairing, these simple tips can help you make your selection. Sweet Cheesecake A good rule: the lighter the dessert, the lighter the wine. Avoid heavy reds for a sweeter dessert and instead pair with a crisp white like Chardonnay, such as Joseph Carr from Sonoma, California. Citrusy Lemon Meringue Pie Lemon flavors can sometimes be polarizing, but complementing this dessert with an equally citrusy wine can work wonders. Try pairing with a food-friendly pinot grigio or a sauvignon blanc. Rich Chocolate Cake Red wine with chocolate seems like a no-brainer, but not all red wines are created equal. For a richer delicacy like this devil’s food cake, try something like Villa Pozzi Nero D’avola, a more fruit-forward, easy-drinking red varietal. For more tips and wine selections, visit winefix.com.

Top with remaining bread slices, pesto side toward tomato. Brush outside of each sandwich with about 1/2 tablespoon of remaining olive oil. Place on grill, reduce heat to medium and grill 2-3 minutes per side, or until bread is nicely toasted and cheese is melted. Remove from heat, cut each sandwich in half and serve.

Boca Regional Hospital marks 50th year with tribute to founder By Dale King

B

ob and gloria Drummond didn’t settle in boca Raton with the intention of becoming community activists. the former gloria Lawson, an Illinois native, married Robert Drummond shortly after graduating from washington university. she and her contractor husband hoped to catch the impending wave of business growth that seemed just on boca’s horizon in the 1960s, and to raise a family. suddenly, and tragically, on April 21, 1962, the Drummond’s two children – Debra Ann, 9, and James Randall, 3, drank a poisoned liquid believing it was milk. there was no hospital in boca at the time. the nearest was bethesda Hospital in boynton beach, a half-hour drive via narrow two-lane roads. both children passed away that evening.

Devastated, the Drummonds vowed to create a medical facility in boca so no one would ever have to venture beyond its borders for proper health care. they organized a massive drive to raise money to construct that medical facility. Historic records say one of every three local residents contributed to the center that opened as boca Raton community Hospital in July 1967, a facility that quickly became known as “the miracle on meadows Road.” “What Gloria Drummond envisioned more than five decades ago when she began her quest to establish a hospital in Boca Raton has become a magnificent reality,” said Jerry Fedele, president and ceo of the medical marvel renamed boca Raton Regional Hospital in 2010 to recognize its larger geographical service area and added treatment capabilities. “the promise she made galvanized a city then, and motivates and drives our doctors, employees, volunteers and philanthropists today.” the celebration kicked off Jan. 21 with the 55th annual black-tie ball which, this year, raised more than $1.5 million to benefit the advancement and enhancement of patient care initiatives. the sell-out crowd of nearly 1,200 paid tribute to Honorary chair Joan wargo (one of those who worked with the Drummonds) along with members of the golden guild -- individuals whose support has made the hospital’s growth possible. gloria’s showed her commitment and leadership by creating the Debbie-Rand memorial service League, named in memory of her deceased children. the original group of 18 has grown to more than 1,200

whose efforts have raised hundreds of thousands of dollars. During the 1970s, the hospital grew to meet the demands of a burgeoning community. It expanded from 104 beds at its opening to a nine-floor, 394-bed hospital. In 1984, a 25,000 square-foot facility was acquired. In 1992, the Lynn Regional cancer center began seeing patients, and in 1993, the hospital’s new maternity wing opened. It would be renamed toppel Family Place in 2007. the christine e. Lynn Heart Institute was created in September 2006, the first open-heart program started in Palm beach county in more than 22 years. the eugene m. & christine e. Lynn cancer Institute at the Harvey & Phyllis sandler Pavilion – a separate, built-from-scratch structure -- was created in 2008. It houses the hospital’s imaging, radiation, chemotherapy, cancer support services and clinical research, as well as the morgan Pressel center for genetics. new facilities continued to arrive: An enhanced and

expanded emergency Department through the wold Family center for emergency medicine in 2011; the marcus neuroscience Institute at the schmidt Family Pavilion in January 2015 and in July 2015, the Hospital’s new christine e. Lynn women’s Health & wellness Institute. It’s only appropriate, as BRRH approaches its official anniversary date of July 17, 2017, that it name its newest treatment complex for the founder. In march, the hospital officially opened the Gloria Drummond Physical Rehabilitation center. gloria’s best friend, elaine Johnson wold, made the lead donation of $10 million to completely renovate the existing treatment facility and increase space from 25,000 to 40,000 square feet. Fedele said the Drummond center brings all rehab orthopedic, cardiac and pulmonary services under one roof. the facility provides aquatic therapy, wound care and hyperbaric medicine, diabetes education, neurological rehabilitation, speech therapy and therapeutic healing programs. the building offers an occupational therapy suite, rehab assessment, assistive technology/visual perceptual area, exam rooms and a nursing station. “the creation of boca Raton Regional Hospital is a testament to the perseverance and commitment of the residents in our community,” said mayor susan Haynie. “Fifty years in the making and the hospital is still growing and innovating, saving and enriching the lives of our residents.” www.bocAsbestmAgAzIne.com

ven as 2017 begins, Rosemary Krieger of boca Raton is still in shock, she admits, from an event that took place in late 2016.

when a shaky, stunned and teary-eyed Rosemary reached the podium, she thanked the nearly 1,000 people in the audience at the 29thAnnual woman Volunteer of the Year Luncheon & Fashion show at the boca Raton Resort & club. she had particularly kind words for her husband, ben, longtime partner in giving, and her three children who flew in from around the country: sons Kenneth, from New York and gregory, from Delaware, and daughter, catherine Krieger-Nelson, from Dallas. “I’ve gotten flowers, emails and calls,” said Rosemary in a recent interview, her smiling face still beaming with excitement. “i didn’t expect to get the award. i am still in shock.” many in the audience were themselves in tears as they stood and applauded Rosemary, whose beneficence has helped dozens of nonprofits, from AVDA (Aid to Victims of Domestic Abuse), the YmcA, march of Dimes, george snow scholarship Fund, wayne barton center, st. Jude church, boca Helping Hands and Florence Fuller child Development center, to name a few. Education and Arts Leadership

Among those at her table was AVDA executive Director Pam o’brien, who nominated Rosemary for the award. “she is a true giver who thinks of others before herself,” said O’Brien. “She wants to make sure that women and children in need have a safe place to go.”

the generous lady from boca has a simple philosophy about giving. “You don’t think about it, you just do it. I has to come from the heart.” coincidentally, barely a month after receiving the honor, Rosemary has jumped back into an AVDA cause. she is on the committee planning the Feb. 21 “Heart of a Woman” luncheon fundraiser at the Boca Resort. The speaker will be Michelle Knight, one of the three women abducted, imprisoned and repeatedly raped by Ariel castro at his home in cleveland. Nabbed by the suspect between 2002 and 2004 were Knight (who has changed her name legally to Lilly Rose Lee), Georgina DeJesus and Amanda Berry. They finally escaped in 2013 when Castro was captured, tried and sentenced to life plus 1,000 years in prison. He committed suicide behind bars.

Parents know there is a small window of time to make a meaningful, positive impact on children and shape who they may become as adults. A large portion BYLINE HEREof that influence comes at home, but it often also involves school, friends and extracurricular activities, many of which can help families make the most out of childhood experiences. In fact, an increasing number of families are introducing youth to enrichment programs before kids begin their formal education. A survey by Forrester found that millennial parents are more likely to engage their children in activities at a younger age. they want to introduce their children to a diverse set of experiences, allowing children to discover their talents and skills. balancing this heightened level of engagement with the demands of hectic family schedules means parents are increasingly challenged to select the most meaningful activities for their children. while most extracurricular activities help children socialize and learn new skills, some go further in areas like character building, good citizenship and exploring future goals. often, the most effective programs work to deliver those outcomes without focusing on them, subtly teaching skills through activities young people consider fun. consider cub scouts and boy scouts, which most associate with camping and outdoor adventures. while boys spend time transforming a block of wood into a race car and learning how to shoot an arrow, the underlying program helps create a strong foundation of leadership, service and community. A study conducted by tufts university of kids ages 6-12 found that youth who participate in scouting exhibit strong moral values and positive character attributes, allowing them to embrace new opportunities, overcome obstacles and become better prepared for future success. As one of the nation’s largest and most prominent values-based, youth-development organizations in the country, boy scouts of America is applying this proven approach in introducing new programs designed to reach youth who may not be interested in building fires. “scouting offers youth and their families lifechanging experiences they can’t get anywhere else – from outdoor adventure to building robots, youth learn the value of hard work and experience

the thrill of it paying off,” said michael surbaugh, chief scout executive for boy scouts of America. “with new programs designed specifically to expand their potential and explore their personal interests, boy scouts of America isn’t just an after-school activity. we are helping pave pathways to bright futures.” According to surbaugh, scouting programs are focused on providing experiences that youth and their parents want. From astronomy and other stem-based skills for future professionals to outdoor adventure, such as camping and paddle boarding, scouting can give direction to the curiosity youth have for life. encouraging new experiences In an effort to further expand unique experiences for youth, boy scouts of America has introduced several innovative programs that bring exciting opportunities to youth and families. Lion: Research has shown that involving kids in scouting at a young age builds character and better prepares them for future success. Rooted in understanding the impact and importance of involving kids in scouting at an early age, the Lion pilot program, currently available in 201 councils across the country, combines concepts of

character development, leadership skills, personal fitness and citizenship with age-appropriate, fun activities for kindergarten-age boys and their parents. STEM Scouts: Jobs in stem-related fields are expected to grow 17 percent by 2018, and salaries in those fields are on average 26 percent higher than salaries for other disciplines. with stemrelated careers on the rise, the stem scouts pilot program helps boys and girls learn more about science, technology, engineering and math through interactive, hands-on activities. the program, currently piloted in 20 councils, helps youth prepare for the future by conducting experiments and learning about lesser-known innovators to demonstrate to youth that people with similar backgrounds to their own can become accomplished stem professionals. Exploring: the expanded exploring program offers youth and young adults, ages 14-20, realworld career experiences that help young men and women build confidence and discover fields where they may find their passion and excel in a future career, such as law enforcement, firefighting, aviation, engineering, medicine and others. PETS OF THE MONTH Fendi

BYLINE HERE

I’m Fendi, a 6yr. old Pomeranian. Everyone seems to love me so much!! I hear them say “oh she’s as white as snow, and so fluffy and those eyes...” If only they knew I love them twice as much. I’m happiness when I’m being hugged, my favorite human is Asha. She found me on the internet in Canada and brought me to my beautiful home in Coral Springs.

Lola & Aila

Cashew

Winston

Cashew is quite the adventurous and likes to go kayaking, loves playing with his friend Brady, he’s been to the top of Mt.Evans in Colorado, and played craps at the MGM in Vegas. He’s in training to be our therapy dog. He’s my best friend and unless I’m working out or on a date (sometimes he comes too) he’s with me. His favorite foods include grass fed beef and spinach omelets, wild salmon, and coconut oil. He also will only eat veggies if I cook them for him. He hates them raw. He’s also grain free.

Winston is one of my many rescue pups. He is going to be 5 years old on March 26th. He was found with another dog abandoned in a house. He loves to play ball and as you can see he also likes to dress up :-)

Jamaica

Charlie & Theodore

Jamaica is a 2 years old male scottie. He is a happy, energetic and loving little buddy! He loves to bark to lizards, and also tease his little brother Pedrito(also a scottie).

This is Charlie and Theodore. They’re sporting their new visors and sunglasses that were purchased at the coral springs art festival.

Should Your Pet Be our Pet of the Month?

Lola and Aila are our beautiful Golden Girls. We moved from Wisconsin to Boca in October. Rather than rolling in the snow making snow angels, they love chilling on the beach and bringing unconditional love to others! Both are being trained to be canine good citizens and therapy dogs.

Keeping your cat healthy and happy doesn’t stop with general nutrition. It’s also important to pay close attention to other health concerns, like oral care, which is often overlooked.

2014, 2015 & 2016 in sun sentinel

“In my experience, one of the most common health concerns I see cats face today is oral care,” Werber said. “That’s why I was happy to see that IAMS released a great-tasting cat food, IAMS Oral Care Complete, specifically designed to help reduce plaque and tartar while also providing cats with a 100 percent complete and balanced nutrition. It’s a win-win.”

The Five W’s of Trusts What, Who, Why, Where, And When

S

ince my last article, people have been calling my office and inquiring on what a trust is and its potential benefits. As a result, I have decided to focus this month’s article on answering, what I like to call “The Five W’s of a Trust.”

1. WHAT - a trust is a legal document that transfers property during or after a person’s lifetime for the benefit of someone. For the most part, there are two types of trusts: A Revocable and a Non-Revocable. A revocable trust can be changed or altered at any time by the creator or creators of the trust during his or her lifetime, while a non-revocable trust can only be changed in certain, rare circumstances. 2. WHO - a trust can be made out for the benefit of any person that you may want, including young children, your spouse, a friend, or your parents. 3. WHY - a trust can automatically transfer property without the use of a will or the need to go to court. Additionally, the use of a trust is usually faster than that of a normal will in transferring property and title as well as it helps avoid the lengthy process of probate in courts. A trust also has the following benefits: it secures your property for the benefit of your beneficiaries, it protects the property from claims from creditors while in the trust, and it also ensures your privacy (as a trust does not become a public record like a will does). Some trusts may even better your tax status, if you fall above the taxable exemption.

4. WHERE - a trust can dispose of property anywhere, so long as the local law of where the property is located is followed and the property is properly titled in the name of the trust. 5. WHEN - a trust can be created today with the help of our attorneys. A trust is a very important document for the preservation of your property in the event of death or incapacitation. There are many factors to consider in creating a trust document and only a licensed attorney can walk you through the fine details of both the creation and the proper funding of a trust. The attorneys at Reinfeld & Cabrera, P.A. have experience in creating trusts and can formulate a trust to meet all your needs. Call us now to schedule a free consultation and to discuss our special rates.
