So many people get involved with carrying grudges and having these moral battles with people, where they cast themselves as the righteous and the other guy is the dirtbag. They waste tons of energy on it, create all kinds of darkness around themselves and the other person. It gets you nothing. - Stephen J. Cannell

Dori Saves Lives

Teaching Responsibility On The Road BY RacHEL GaLvIN getting your driver’s license is a rite of passage.HERE But with that BYLINE newly obtained freedom comes a responsibility many teens may not grasp. Motor vehicle crashes are the leading cause of death for u.s. teens. according to Florida Highway safety and Motor Vehicles, there were 3503 crashes involving teens in 2015 Recent assemblies at the Benjamin school, olympic alone. Heights Hs, omni Middle school and community events. the statistics are shocking enough, but the numbers really don’t hit home until tragedy happens to someone you love. when irv slosberg’s 14-year-old daughter Dori was killed in a car accident in 1996, his life changed forever. the crash killed four additional teens, paralyzed another and seriously injured others, including Dori’s twin sister, Emily, who survived. turning grief and anger into positive change, slosberg began a political career to make a difference. He became a member of the Florida House of Representatives and fought vigorously for several pieces of legislation, including for the Dori slosberg and Katie Marchetti safety Belt Law. it passed in 2009 and requires that all drivers and front seat passengers, and passengers under age18, fasten their safety belts or risk a citation. (Dori was among the teens who did not wear a seat belt and was thrown from the car). He also passed legislation for harsher penalties for repeat Dui offenders, got funding for guardrails on the turnpike and state Road 80, and more.

the foundation focuses on the risks of all modes of transportation. according to the world Health organization, 49 percent of traffic deaths are from motorcyclists, pedestrians and cyclists.

in addition, he began a foundation in his daughter’s name in 2004, a non-profit organization dedicated to traffic safety. The Dori Slosberg Foundation utilizes a wide range of programs to teach people, especially students.

they have a semi-annual contest called “in the Click” in which students are encouraged to buckle up. the number of kids in compliance are counted. the school with the greatest number of kids wearing seat belts gets a prize.

“we go to middle schools, high schools and colleges and educate kids about every aspect of safety on the road,” says the foundation’s executive director, tara applebaum, adding, “we focus on teen driving, but also bike riding, walking across the street [while texting].” texting can be very dangerous while driving. according to the foundation’s website, you are 23 times more likely to crash while texting. Every time you text, your eyes are off the road an average of five seconds each time, which is like driving the length of a football field at 55 m.p.h. completely blind.

6

DECEMBER 2016

applebaum says they offer a wide range of interactive programs to educate youth and help them understand the dangers of drinking and to know the rules of the road. “the kids wear drunk goggles and shoot hoops, walk the line [like a Dui test], play card games... they play the wheel of safety, which includes different laws,” she adds.

they also bring together panels of speakers to talk to kids. the foundation just had an event in which victims of Duis could share their stories with teens. they plan on having a roundtable on Beacon tV with both safety experts and teenagers so the students could ask questions. they are also piloting a peer to peer club at two local high schools right now. students come up with their own programs and utilize some of the foundation’s as well. in the spring, in time for prom and in time for Road safety week in March, they do crash reenactments.

“We bring in the fire rescue, police, the trauma hawk helicopter and play the reenactments,” says applebaum. in addition, they offer programs for senior citizens, suggesting alternative transportation for them and having senior Car Fit events. slosberg enacted legislation that added a $5 fee on any traffic citation to go toward programs like these. applebaum says the foundation oversees it. the money goes to the County Clerk of Courts and then is transferred to the school district and finally toward the programs in need. To find out more about the foundation and its programs, visit www.DoriSavesLives.org.

offer Vein and Vascular, a division of the Soffer Health Institute, specializes in treatment for varicose and spider veins. Dr Ariel Soffer is a Nationally Recognized Vein Expert and board certified Cardiovascular Specialist. If you experience restless legs, numbness, tingling, cramping, burning, swelling or an achy feeling in your legs the Soffer vein experts can help. It is quite common for these symptoms to develop as men and women age. Besides the discomfort it can make you want to hide your legs as spider veins and varicose veins become very visible. Lymphdema (a condition that occurs when the network of vessels, veins and arteries that circulate fluids through is not functioning properly) will cause swelling and damage to the skin. Fortunately these conditions are all treatable. For many years people have had to go to Soffer’s facility in Miami for treatment but Soffer Vein and Vascular now has a location in Deerfield Beach convenient to West Boca, Parkland, Coral Springs Coconut Creek, Margate and all of North Broward County. Located at Total Medical, this unique location is one of the only in the area that has state of the art treatments for varicose and spider veins, leg swelling and discomfort, physical therapy for the legs, custom fit medical compressions stockings, and one of the only dedicated lymphedema centers in South Florida.

My view from the City Council BY RoBeRt S. WeinRoth

T

he City of Boca Raton has undergone a very discernable demographic change over the past few decades. When my family and I first began coming to Boca Raton it was to visit our retired relatives who had come to south Florida to enjoy their sunset years. i realized the lifestyle in Boca Raton was far more relaxed than new york City and the Long island suburbs.

when we arrived it was apparent the Palm Beach County schools had not anticipated the southward migration of families, like mine, with children. i was taken aback by the abundance of “portables” adjacent to the brick and mortar schools. Fast-forward 20 years and, for the most part, the portables are gone, as the school district has added the classrooms for the education of our children. a-rated schools are the norm and the classroom experience offers students a broad range of educational opportunities. after iBM unceremoniously abandoned Boca Raton, there was a period of readjustment for residents seeking challenging employment opportunities offering competitive compensation. today, our city has over 200 companies calling Boca Raton home. in fact, of the 44 corporate headquarters located within Palm Beach County, 32 are located in Boca Raton! we have over 16 million square feet of available office space. To help fill that space, the City created the position of Economic Development Manager and hired Jessica Del Vecchio to assume that role. Ms. Del Vecchio (along with our partners at the Business Development Board of Palm Beach County) continues to identify high quality employers to relocate in our city. the City Council has created an economic development fund which, when combined with county and state funds and tax incentives, allows us to be competitive with other municipalities also seeking to lure companies to their locale.

During the economic downturn, the City was forced to shed employees to cushion the impact of lower property values (equating to lower tax revenues). with the improved property values our tax revenues are returning to prerecession levels allowing the City to restore personnel in positions. Last year the city added 70 employees and this year a like number have been budgeted. at the same time, Florida atlantic university, under its president, Dr. John Kelly, is undergoing an amazing transformation. in just two years at the helm, Dr. Kelly has raised the reputation and rating of Fau from the bottom quarter to top rating within the state university system. this has resulted in the state making additional funding available to further the improvement. we can also boast a world-class medical facility at Boca Raton Regional Hospital. thanks to the amazing philanthropy of many of our residents, patients are no longer heading to the airport when they have a serious health condition. Finally, our city can boast two nationally televised sporting championships. The first is the Allianz Championship (played on the old Course at Broken sound for the past decade). the 2017 Allianz Championship (which benefits the Boca Raton Regional Hospital) will be played in February. the second is the Boca Raton Bowl (played at Fau on schnellenberger Field). the third annual playing of this college championship will be on December 20th 2016 (it’s not too early to purchase your seats to this great event). all in all, this is not the Boca Raton I first visited many years ago. Our city is full of energy offering excellent educational and employment opportunities. it is a place where families can live, learn, work and play. it is a place i am proud to call home.

Theatre Lab At Fau BY DaLE KINg

L

ouis tyrrell shocked the south Florida theater world in the spring of 2015 when he announced he was quitting his job as founding artistic director of the theatre at arts garage in Delray Beach. while the departure was sudden and unexpected, even more baffling was the fact that he told virtually no one where he was going and what he BYLINE HERE planned to do.

effort to underwrite a Matching gift Challenge that seeks to raise $50,000 to pay for programs and for the renovations. “Many people have been responding to the Batmasians’ challenge,” said tyrrell. “we have almost made it. we are thrilled.”

But he did have a plan. and a few months later, tyrrell, the one-time actor and director, maestro of the theatrical arts field who had been a driving and creative force in Florida’s live stage performance arena since the 1970s, popped up as artistic director and Dorothy F. schmidt Eminent scholar in the arts at theatre Lab, a newly established, professional resident company on the Boca Raton campus of Florida atlantic university.

Marta Batmasian, a longtime supporter of cultural ventures, echoed tyrrell’s words about the importance of theatre Lab. “it offers our community sophisticated cultural experiences with professional actors as well as innovative learning opportunities for students.”

the venture uses a laboratory approach to new play development, one that allows Fau faculty and students, along with the entire south Florida community, to be part of the artistic process, actively engaged by worldclass professional theater performances, workshops and conversations with leading playwrights and theater artists. it also provides a home base for playwrights developing their work. when tyrrell arrived at Fau, the university moved him and his entourage into a small space on the first floor of the Parliament Hall residential building, a short hop from several other artistic spots on the Boca campus – the university theater, studio one theater and the Living Room Cinema, a popular venue for the showing of indie and avant-garde films. “we started with raw space,” said tyrrell. “we could not do full productions. we presented 33 different plays and musicals in script reading format. it was a wonderful range of programs.” Between last season and this, the stage, seats and technical equipment got an upgrade. “we needed space for the audience that maximized sight lines and orientation,” said tyrrell. “we built risers and now have four rows of seats, all with a terrific view of the stage. A full lighting system was put in along with a sound and tech booth. we created a stage along with a backstage area with a fully designed set.” Last summer, theatre Lab held a ViP pre-season celebration to showcase the renovations that created the 99-seat Heckscher stage, named for the Heckscher Foundation for Children that serves the needs of youth in new york City in such areas as education, workforce training, health, recreation and the arts. in addition, philanthropists Edith and Martin stein renewed their first-year pledge and continue to provide financial support for the 2016-2017 season. art patrons Marta and Jim Batmasian also launched an

with the full production stage now available, tyrrell moved from play readings to complete performances. theatre Lab has already presented two shows --the three sisters of weehawken by Deborah zoe Laufer and this Random world by steven Dietz. Motherland will be presented Jan. 27 to Feb. 12, with a special preview on Jan. 26.

Louis Tyrrell with Deborah Zoe Laufer, who wrote “Three Sisters of Weehawken.”

the opening production was particularly special for tyrrell, who worked with Laufer when he was executive director of the former Florida stage in Manalapan from 1987 to 2011. “Three of her first plays, The Last schwartz, the gulf of westchester and End Days, all premiered at Florida stage,” where tyrrell produced and directed them. the playwright herself directed the theatre Lab performance. three sisters…. is about a trio of siblings who live in the family home in weehawken, n.J., but long to visit Manhattan, “just a ferry ride away.” the play traces their lives from 1958 to 2016, focusing on how they remain stuck in a world of their own construction without following a dream that is just beyond the window. “there’s nothing more important to me than to continue working with my dear colleagues who are the heart of the theater,” said tyrrell. “there’s no better example of what the aspiration is for a theater practitioner than supporting the core artists in our profession.” this Random world was produced just before the holiday break. “i have produced six plays by Dietz over the past 20 years. this was his latest.”

Motherland is also special to tyrrell. “it was the last play i produced before i left arts garage.” in addition, gregory will be the featured speaker at a playwright’s forum Jan. 5 and Jan. 8. other forums in February and March will feature authors Carter w. Lewis and israel Horovitz. the three plays on this season’s schedule will form the foundation of “Future Pages,” theatre Lab’s educational outreach program. “More than 1,000 middle- and highschool students will come in and see these plays, then write their own. Some will be chosen and refined, then produced under our guidance.” as the second half of the 2016-2017 academic year begins, tyrrell feels he and his theatre Lab colleagues “have established Fau as a player and a force in professional american theater.”

FINANCIAL / TAX ADVICE RobeRt Spielman, Cpa, JD

ta x a n d a d v i s o r y s e r v i c e s

Time For 2016/2017 Planning now that we are in november, most of us can effectively project what our 2016 income tax picture will look like. therefore, november and December are the prime months for doing year-end 2016 planning. when doing your year-end planning, it is essential to think ahead to 2017, so strategies can be implemented that not only reduce your 2016 tax liability, but potentially reduce your 2017 liability. our objective is to adopt a plan that creates a net tax savings, considering the two tax years together. For individual tax planning, you must account for all of your income and deductions to date and then project your income and deductions through the end of the year. no one tax checklist for year-end planning can ever be fully applicable to everyone. below are just a few planning ideas to consider when you do your year-end 2016 planning: 1.consider family tax planning to determine whether you can shift income to family members in lower tax brackets. 2.if you can, make gifts of up to $14,000 per person Federal gift tax free. Making gifts to children enables them to earn income, which may be subject to a significantly lower level of income taxation. 3.carefully review your business activities, especially activities flowing to you from schedule K-1’s, to maximize your 2016 tax position. 4.review investments to determine if you have unrealized capital losses, which may be recognized to offset capital gains already recognized. review any investment interest expense limitation. 5.bunch up your itemized deductions if you are close to being able to utilize them after considering all phase-outs. if you might not be able to utilize them, consider moving them to 2017. 6.review 2017 to determine if it makes sense to accelerate income into 2016 or defer expenses into 2017. if you need to accelerate income, consider selling u.s. savings bonds, recognize capital gains, accelerate wages or take distributions www.bocasbestMagazine.coM

from trusts that bring along income. expenses that can be deferred include paying mortgage interest, real estate tax, medical expenses, state income taxes, charitable donations, and miscellaneous deductions such as legal, accounting, and investment management fees. 7. Have you fully funded your retirement accounts? if you have not made your required minimum distribution from your retirement plan, do so before the end of the year. if you reached aged 70 ½ this year, you may delay your first withdrawal until next year, so long as it is made before april 1. consider your 2016 and 2017 marginal tax brackets when making this decision. consider whether making a charitable contribution from your retirement plan makes sense. 8. Maximize the use of education benefits and credits within the family. consider section 529 Plans and determine if you can benefit from education credits or if they are better utilized by the student. if students can utilize the credits, they should recognize income to the extent a credit can be monetized. 9.review your withholdings and estimated tax payments to insure you will not be subject to underpayment penalties. year-end tax planning can be complex and is often based upon assumptions for the succeeding tax year. However, if you gather all your information, review your 2015 return, and consider all of your options, meaningful tax savings can be achieved. avoid the “should’ve’s” and “could’ve’s” by planning now and taking the appropriate action steps before yearend. this article provides generalized tax and financial information for educational purposes only. it does not provide any personalized tax, investment, legal, or other business or professional advice. before taking any action with respect to the matters addressed, you should seek assistance of a professional who is familiar with your particular situation. the author and publisher accept no responsibility for any actions taken, or not taken, by any reader of this article.

It’s Their Business

BY JOSEPH BUCHINO

The Snowbirds Are Coming!! It’s that time of year again. The traffic is more congested, lines are longer at grocery stores, restaurants are packed by 6pm… The winter visitors, aka “snowbirds”, are arriving in full force! This happens every year in Florida and who could blame them? If I lived up north, I would also make the trip down here to beat the cold. The winter visitors bring a lot of business with them. One business in particular that seems to stay busy during the season is the emergency restoration business. Every year during this season, our mold remediation workload seems to double for the months of November and December. This is due to a number of things. I would say the majority of our mold remediation work is related to the A/C unit. Proper maintenance of an A/C unit is very important, especially in Florida where they run all year long. Here are some tips to save you money

www.bocasbestMagazine.coM

and help prevent any damage to your property: - Make sure you have someone physically checking on your property at least once a month. A good property manager or a friend can do this. Some of the best property managers will go as far as to send you updated pictures of your property. - You can prevent mold from developing on your property by using a programmable thermostat. Have it programmed to run your AC at 72° for two hours in the morning and 85° the rest of the time. This will prevent mold by removing moisture from the air during cooler hours. - Use portable dehumidifiers. Be sure you do your research on them and buy the correct number of dehumidifiers you would need to dehumidify your entire house/condo.

- One of the best investments I made was a NEST Thermostat. It is referred to as a “learning thermostat” because it can create a schedule, its proven to save energy, and you can control it from a smart phone. I highly suggest investing in the NEST thermostat or one similar to it. - Flush out you’re A/C drain line before you leave for an extended period of time. This will save you a lot of heart ache in the long run. Nothing worse than arriving at your home, A/C is working properly, but you have water damage due to a clogged drain line. - I always suggest having you’re A/C coils cleaned. Your A/C has been running all year long and probably hasn’t had the filter changed. If your filter hasn’t been changed all year, the coils start to act like a filter attracting dirt, mold, and other contaminants. These are just suggestions, as I am not a

licensed A/C technician. These are tips that I have picked up over my tenure and tips I’ve utilize. If you have any questions concerning air conditioning, I recommend you talk to a reputable A/C company. I am a licensed restoration expert. I deal with any and all kinds of water mitigation, mold remediation, fire/smoke and biohazard/trauma clean up. My company, Restoration 1 – Parkland, works in the tri county area and we give free mold inspections and evaluations. Safe and Sound During the Holidays How to manage noise aversion in dogs and strengthen the human-animal bond

100% NO-KILL SOCIETY

(Family Features) the holiday season seems to last longer and get more hectic every year. whether cooking the thanksgiving feast or doing last-minute gift shopping, everyone can get a little stressed out. Most people don’t know that their dog may also experience anxiety during these celebrations.

Puppies Kittens Dogs Cats 21287 Boca Rio Rd Boca Raton, FL 33433

according to an online survey conducted by Harris Poll and commissioned by zoetis, 46 percent of dog owners reported their dog showed symptoms of stress during the holidays; that stress could be due to noise aversion. the survey also found that 44 percent of dog owners said their dogs suffer from noise aversion.

Zorro Male, 8 week old Parson Russel Terrier

noise aversion is the set of fear-based behaviors that dogs display when subjected to “noise triggers.” During the year-end holidays, such noise triggers might be the doorbell, boisterous family gatherings, children playing with loud toys or New Year’s fireworks.

10:30am-4:00pm Tues, Thurs, Fri, Sat and Sun Closed Mon and Wed

Thank You to our media sponsors:

During the busy holiday season, common behavioral signs of canine noise aversion include: panting, trembling or shaking, pacing or restlessness, vocalizing, hiding, owner-seeking behavior, cowering, refusal to eat, excessive vigilance or hypervigilance, and escape behaviors.

www.TriCountyAnimalRescue.com

(561) 482-8110

although noise aversion is common, dog owners often do not seek help from their veterinarians. one reason may be that pet owners recognize their dogs overreact to noise, but do not recognize that these behaviors are a demonstration of fear. this fear can disrupt the human-animal bond by causing anxiety for the dogs and stress for their humans.

Caring For Pets Since 1981

Animal Hospital of Boca Raton

therefore, it is important to seek treatment for your dog if he is displaying signs of noise aversion. not only are these dogs distressed and suffering, but when left untreated, noise aversion can progress to a more severe state. “it is crucial to understand the level of physiological suffering that occurs with the stress and anxiety of noise aversion,” said Dr. Lynn Honeckman, a Florida veterinarian. “ignoring the fearful pet during a noise event or using prescription medications as a last resort is not the standard of care as outlined by the american board of Veterinary behaviorists.”

www.animalhospital.net

A new medication called SILEO® (dexmedetomidine oromucosal gel), the first and only FDa-approved treatment for canine noise aversion, is available via prescription from your veterinarian. it can be easily administered at home to calm your dog without sedating him for the duration of a noisy holiday event. The first dose can be given as soon as the dog shows signs of anxiety and fear, or approximately 30-60 minutes before a known fear- or anxiety-causing noise stimulus.

Attention Holiday Travelers!

T

he holidays are here which means it’s the busiest time of year for traveling to visit friends and family. a record 100 million u.s. residents are expected to be traveling at least 50 miles from home this holiday season. an increase in cars on the road also significantly increases the chances for fatal accidents. aaa urges everyone traveling by car to stay alert and give yourself extra time in case of traffic delays. if you are traveling far, take breaks every 100 miles or two hours and do not push yourself to meet an unrealistic arrival time. if you are feeling tired, pull off the road into a rest area, get out of the car for some fresh air, and keep yourself hydrated. if you are traveling with another person that can drive, take turns being the one behind the wheel. Forty-one percent of fatal car accidents are single vehicle crashes. when driving long distances, you are more likely to be faced with impatient and aggressive drivers. Let them pass you or go through intersections ahead of you so that you can control the situation. Be proactive and avoid accidents with drivers that are in a rush to get to their destination. if you do get into an accident, follow these steps: 1) Call 911 for anyone hurt. 2) Diagram the accident and take photos at the scene. 3) Do not discuss the accident with the other driver or take any blame for the accident. 4) Call a personal injury attorney immediately, as the time right after the accident can be crucial to your claim. 5) write down or take pictures of the other driver’s insurance card and driver’s license. 6) get the driver’s name, address and phone number. 7) take down any witness’s names, addresses and phone numbers.

Insurance are you covered if you get into an accident? Most drivers don’t realize they are not fully covered. Did you know that 24% of Florida drivers are uninsured, and at least another 25% are significantly underinsured? would you be surprised to learn that Florida does not require bodily injury insurance? uninsured drivers create risks for themselves and for all drivers, which means purchasing the minimum amount of required coverage may not be enough. uninsured motorist coverage will protect you and your family in the event the other driver does not have adequate or any bodily injury coverage. it will pay for the injury caused by someone else. your uninsured motorist coverage covers the following expenses: medical expenses and lost wages not fully paid by your no fault coverage, future medical expense and future wage losses, and non-economic damages including disability, pain and suffering, and the loss of ability to enjoy life. Protect yourself and your family. Buy as much uninsured motorist coverage as you can afford. it should be considered one of the most important pieces of your self-protection insurance package. staying alert and being aware of your surroundings can save you and others from an accident – holiday travel can be stressful, but taking a few extra precautions can make it much more enjoyable. If you’ve been injured in an accident, call Cutler Rader, P.L. at (954) 913-CASE (2273) or visit us at www.CutlerRader.com. We’re happy to talk and the consultation is free.

The Salvation Army

Helping To Bring Happiness To The Holidays

BY RacHEL GaLvIN BYLINE HERE

F

rom responding to floods in Southeast Louisiana and South Mississippi to being first responders at tragedies like the mass shooting in Dallas, the Salvation Army is there. They feed the hungry and minister the incarcerated. They clothe and shelter the needy and help men rehabilitate their lives. They work after school with children and help families who have lost everything. They work all over the world, helping those hit by catastrophes like the earthquake in Italy and those who have suffered disasters right next door. Most people know the Salvation Army from the thrift stores they drive by or the clanging of Santa’s bell at Christmas time next to that well-known red kettle awaiting donations. They don’t realize the massive amount of help the organization, now in its 151st year, does. The organization began in the United States in 1880, after coming from England, and now includes over 127 countries and serves more than 30 million Americans every year. The Salvation Army was begun by William Booth, who was looking for a way to leave the four walls of a church and take his message of salvation out on the street and give it to the masses. He started with 10 full-time workers in his endeavor in 1867 and, within seven years, he had 1000 volunteers and 42 evangelists. At that time, they called themselves “

34

DECEMBER 2016

The Christian Mission” or were known as “The Hallelujah Army,” which Booth changed to “Salvation Army” in 1878. This is still a Christian organization, but they help people of all faiths. People who have struggled with addiction have been helped through their live-in rehab facility. When someone has gone through crisis and cannot cover their bills or do not have food to eat, they will help them to bridge that gap. When disaster strikes and they have lost everything, people turn to Salvation Army to replace their furniture, to get vouchers to buy new clothes or assistance acquiring food stamps. The Salvation Army’s goal is to “give a hand up, not a hand out,” always working to get people back on their feet. “What I like best about The Salvation Army is how dedicated we are to helping those most in need. As you can see, we answer the call to help those in various disparate situations. We are working on helping more,” says Development Director Sean Davis, who works for The Salvation Army of Palm Beach County. It may seem away, but Christmas is right around the corner. It is probably the season when people are most in need and, again, Salvation Army is

ready to help. They offer an Angel Tree program. Companies or individuals can sponsor needy children. The Angel trees are filled with paper ornaments with written information, a wish list from a needy child. The information includes the child’s gender, name and suggested gifts and then the sponsor takes the ornament, buys the gift and drops it off to the Salvation Army (or they will pick it up from the business). “This is our most organized program,” says Area Commander Major Louana Smith.” A lot of companies help us sponsor angels. We verify the family’s income, that it is the child’s parent [or guardian]. Many of these people work minimum-wage jobs and cannot afford to buy something for their child. We ask for unwrapped gifts and deliver them on December 22 to the parents so the parents have something to wrap and give their children on Christmas morning, so they can feel part of the [gift-giving].” There are various locations where you will hear the bell ringing of volunteers including Macy’s and Bloomingdales at the Boca Town Center Mall, or stop by an area Salvation Army office (like in Boca Raton at 300 SW 2 Ave.) They are also always seeking volunteers. Happy Holidays

7 Ways to Include Everyone In the Holiday Cheer BYLINE HERE

(Family Features) Holidays bring get-togethers filled with music, food and conversation. However, for those who experience hearing loss, the season often takes on a whole different sound. Those with hearing loss often end up feeling isolated from the festivities, but there are ways you can make sure they feel comfortable joining the fun. A survey* by Rayovac, which was conducted online by Harris Poll, found that 56 percent of Americans say talking and catching up with family members is their favorite part of family gatherings, but nearly one out of every five (19 percent) say they have experienced difficulty communicating with someone who is hard of hearing. If you’ll be escorting a family member with hearing loss to a holiday event, be sure their hearing devices are in good operating condition with batteries that are able to power all of the device’s features, like Rayovac. The hearing aid battery company has also introduced the Gift of Hearing this holiday season, a campaign in which a portion of proceeds from its battery sales benefit the Starkey Hearing Foundation. This holiday season, make the most of the opportunity to share quality conversations with loved ones who have trouble hearing by following these simple tips from Shari Eberts of livingwithhearingloss.com:

• Get their attention before speaking by saying their name or tapping them on the shoulder. • Give some context as to the topic of the conversation to help them infer. • Make sure they can see your lips. Stand in a well-lit area and be sure you are facing them directly, with your hand away from your face while talking. • Know that background noise can provide difficult distractions. If you’re hoping for more than a passing greeting, find a quiet place where you can visit comfortably. • Enunciate as you talk, but avoid the temptation to speak overly slowly. Instead, speak at a moderate but steady rate. • Be patient and be prepared to repeat or rephrase your comments. • Remember that if you are feeling frustrated, your partner in conversation may be, too. Keep your sense of humor so you can enjoy the holiday together. Learn more about The Gift of Hearing campaign, and find hearing aid batteries designed with the latest technology in mind, at Rayovac.com.

Aid To Victims Of Domestic Abuse D

BY Y LouIsE PEtRaItIs “together, together, we can make a difference.” t

Financial Aid for Emergencies

this philosophy has guided Boca Helping Hands BYLINE(BHH), HEREa non-profit organization that assists neighbors in need, for nearly 20 years.

For people facing financial crises, BHH steps in with immediate aid. Dollars devoted to this program help prevent eviction, utility shut-offs and other emergency situations.

Founded in 1998, BHH started as a soup kitchen in a local church. t today, it’s a thriving, $2 million operation that provides a wealth of food, financial, medical and jobrelated resources for individuals and families throughout the community.

Like food services, the financial assistance program is designed “to supplement, not sustain,” swedenborg explains. Boca Raton residents who apply must document their needs and usually receive a onetime payment, reinforcing BHH goal to lend a hand up, rather than a hand out. “we don’t enable,” says swedenborg. “Our mission is to instill dignity and foster independence.”

Feeding the Hungry

a little more than thirty years ago, a diverse group of concerned citizens in southern Palm Beach County identified the lack of a safe place for victims to find shelter in their immediate time of need. they met, planned and raised funds to open a safe haven in the southern part of the county. aid to Victims of Domestic Abuse, Inc. (AVDA) was formed as a nonprofit corporation in 1985 and opened the doors to its emergency shelter with room for 12 residents in early 1986 and provided a crisis hotline to offer safety planning and counseling to victims during their time of need. throughout the years, aVD a a has grown substantially. t today, a a can shelter up to 95 people at any one time and provides extensive aVD outreach and violence prevention programs. Each year, aVD a a provides residential programming to more than 400 individuals. all services, including community education and violence prevention programming reach more than 10,000 people each year.

Excellent job skills are key to gaining independence. To help clients build these skills, and better compete in the marketplace, BHH offers both mentoring and training.

the program is unique among community meal programs. guests can choose from a wide selection of healthy, upscale fare, and enjoy their meals in the comfort and comradery of a pleasant, wood-trimmed dining room that resembles a small café. Menu items are lovingly prepared, and beautifully presented, by a caring team of volunteers. Even special occasions, from st. Patrick’s Day to the Kentucky Derby, are celebrated with specially themed dishes, dining room décor, and staff dress. “Everything, from the food to the atmosphere, reflects our passion for our work and respect for those we serve,” says Development Manager Karen swedenborg. through the program, hot meals are delivered to the homebound as well. Over 5,000 pantry bags, filled with a variety of groceries, are also distributed monthly to qualified, low-income residents of Palm Beach County. Additionally, the program’s backpack service, which benefits 1,400 boys and girls from ten schools, ensures that children are well fed on the weekends. Keeping BHH warehouse and kitchen shelves fully stocked is a huge undertaking. Canned, frozen, and fresh goods—1.8 million pounds annually--are donated by individuals and foundations, corporate and community food drives, and food recovery partners. at present, these partners include 100-plus stores and restaurants, from Publix, winn-Dixie, t target and walmart, to whole Foods, trader Joe’s and the capital grille. The Value of Our Values When was the last time, if ever, you were asked to identify your values? Values are the center of your being and are key to understanding how to make meaningful choices. Whether or not you are aware, when you find yourself reacting strongly to events, issues, opinions or tasks, it is because they either align with or go against your values. understanding your values creates a doorway to clarity...clarity of vision, clarity of goals, clarity of priorities, clarity of purpose, and clarity of what drives you to take action. in addition, being able to articulate your values to others offers opportunities for enhanced communication. identifying your personal values is an important part of understanding yourself and creating a space where you can be successful with personal and professional goals. in this context, the word “value” may refer to how you feel about the work you are doing and the contribution it makes to society. the word “value” may also refer to your personal life and how you choose to spend your time and with whom. Effortless fulfillment and joy are experienced when you create a personal and professional life that is congruent with your core values. So, how do you start to figure out what your core values are? step 1: ask yourself, “what, in life, is most important to me?” write out everything that comes to mind. step 2: From your responses, go deeper and ask yourself, “what does ________ mean to me?” For example, you may have an initial answer of money, but after further digging, it really means freedom.

step 3: Choose no more than 6 values from your list. Rank them in hierarchy from most valuable to least valuable. step 4: now it is time to drill it down to your core 3 values. Look separately at each value and ask yourself, “if ___________ were missing from my life, i would be okay.” or “if i have to live without one of these values, i can let go of ________.” Step 4: Take your 3 core values and write them down, with a definition and what it means for you to honor that value. yay! you have now created your core value system. you can refer to and call on this as a foundation for the intentions you create, the goals you set and the choices you make in each moment of who you want to be. if at any time, you find yourself feeling disappointed or frustrated, check in with yourself and identify which value you feel is being compromised. understanding and owning your values creates a sense of empowerment and clarity that can profoundly support your life, personally and professionally.
