As a dentist, I understand that many people don’t look forward to receiving dental care. My mission is to alleviate their fears, and provide the same painless quality of care that I offer my own family. Creating a trusting relationship with each patient is my greatest goal. I enjoy the dental field because it gives me a chance to help people HECTOR NARANJO, D.M.D. improve their overall health. I received my first dental degree in 1997 at El Bosque University in Bogota, Colombia, where I am originally from. I received my second Doctorate of Dental Medicine at Nova Southeastern University. THERE ARE SO MANY GOOD REASONS TO VISIT OUR OFFICE

I live in Parkland with my wife, Ximena, and our daughter, Paula. When I’m out of the office you can usually find me playing soccer and racquetball. I also enjoy reading and traveling with my family. It is very important to me to have a balanced life between my two passions: my family and my job.

From the comfort of our couches we watched with excitement as the 2014 Winter Olympics unfolded on the slopes of Sochi. I admire these world class athletes for their competitive spirit, athleticism and abilities, and what is likely the most rigorous years of training before competing on the world stage. The spectacular showmanship of the snowboarders, skiers, and skaters generated a lot of “warmth” to contrast the scenery of snowcapped mountains and served as a reminder of why we love living in sunny south Florida. Our family and friends up north, and as far south as Georgia, have been blasted with several brutal winter storms recently (shout out to my kin in the peachtree state, the Zion family - stay warm!) We have had weeks of what I call “Chamber of Commerce” weather. So embrace this sunny weather and get out there and do great things in our communities! There’s never been a better time to find something you love to do and “march” to the beat of your own drum!

Friendly Competition Never Gets Old at Margate Senior Games

G

oodbye bingo, and hello Wii bowling and bocce. Today’s senior citizens are an active bunch and the 35th annual Margate Senior Games will show off a sampling of what these seniors can do. The Margate Parks and Recreation Department and the Northwest Focal Point Senior Center will host the much anticipated annual event on March 10 -14 this year, at a variety of indoor and outdoor locations throughout the community including Coral Cay Plantation, Firefighters Park, Oriole Golf Club, Brunswick /Margate Lanes and the Senior Center. The popular program appeals to hundreds of local senior citizens ages 60 and over, who compete head to head for a bit of friendly competition in everything from shuffleboard to Wii Table Tennis. “They have fun,” said Margate Recreation Supervisor Deborah Winograd. “They meet other people and they get outside.” The event attracts many regulars and a number of newcomers each year. The oldest senior to compete last year – in shuffleboard and bocce -was 100 years old, Winograd said. “We get a variety of ages,” and some will bring their family with them to watch,” added Winograd who has helped organize the event for the past 24 years. Several hundred seniors are expected to participate in this popular program, endorsed by the Governor’s Council on Physical Fitness and Sports. A variety of events are planned to appeal to everyone’s area of interest. Outdoor events include horseshoes, shuffleboard, golf putting, basketball, petanque and bocce; while indoor games include Wii Bowling, Wii Table Tennis, billiards and traditional bowling. Additional events, new to 2014, may include pickleball and sand volleyball, depending on interest. Winners will be awarded gold, silver and bronze medals in each category at an awards ceremony on Tuesday, March 18 at the Northwest Focal Point Senior Center.

The Margate Senior Games are free and open to all participants age 60 and older. Entr y applications are available at the Parks and Recreation Department, 6199 NW 10th St., or at the Northwest Focal Point Senior Center, 6009 NW 10th St. The deadline for submitting entries is Thursday, March 6. A full schedule of events and activities accompany each entr y form. For more information visit www. margatefl.com or call 954-972- 6458.

Perfect Smiles & Friendly Service from John Orthodontics

E

liane A. John, D.D.S., M.S., owner of John Orthodontics, truly loves what she does! A Board Certified Orthodontist who combines 20 years of work experience and training, she is experienced with the latest technology, including self – ligating braces, invisalign, invisalign teen, temporary anchorage devices as well as dental facial orthopedics. Within her office, she sees a lot of patients, all with different types of malocclusions, and that is just the way she likes it. She works with adults, teenagers and young children as well. myself and I monitor their oral hygiene very closely.”

She says, “I have the best job in the world! It’s fun! Nothing beats the appreciation when you take the braces off and they have a whole new look! Plus, you get to know families and watch the kids grow up. You become part of their lives. You are a role model, a sympathetic ear, a friend… I take time with them (and they get greeted with hugs and kisses). When people come here, they always say there is a warmness and loving feeling that they feel as soon as they walk in the door. They know we are there for them”.

The whole office is an open and bright, inviting environment, including the modern and spacious open bay area where Dr. John does the regular wire change. There is also two private exam rooms that are used for consultations. This state-of-the-art orthodontic office is equipped with the latest equipment and computer software with digital X-Ray machine that uses minimum radiation exposure. She also is planning to install an “iPad bar” for patients in the lobby, in addition to the installed Wi-Fi.

She just received a letter from the parents of a patient she treated over 6 years ago with a picture showing off their daughter’s perfectly aligned smile. A token like that makes her job worthwhile. She works with young patients to anticipate later issues and correct them right away while treatment is much simpler and less costly.

Dr. John was born in Rio de Janeiro State and was in private practice in Brazil for 6 years before she moved to the United States. She continued her career at the University of California San Francisco where she earned her Doctoral of Dental Surgery Degree and graduated second in her class in the International Dental Program. She furthered her education at the University of Detroit Mercy where she obtained her Certificate in Orthodontics as well as her Master of Science in Dentistry.

“The American Association of Orthodontists recommends that patients have their first visit with an Orthodontist at 7 years old,” she says, adding that they check a patient for misalignment of teeth and jaws, proper bite, potential crowding and other issues. If the problems are handled right away, during a child’s “growth period,” they are able to fix the issue quicker and in a less invasive way and avoid surgery later on. Dr. John explains that with the use of dentofacial orthopedics she can guide the facial growth and development which occurs largely during the childhood years. But most kids she sees simply need braces. She uses high tech, self-litigating braces, which allow lighter forces on the teeth, equaling more comfort and less treatment time (up to 4 moths) .They also are easier to clean and have less friction. Parents like them because they don’t have to bring their kids in as often for a check-up, only once every two months, instead of the typical monthly visit. Other adults and teens choose Invisalign or invisalign teen which makes the patient

When not at work, Dr. John enjoys being a mom and staying at home with her husband and two children, but often is doing continuing education courses or additional reading. She admits she loves her job so much she often takes it home with her. look like they are not wearing anything. They are so comfortable that patients often say they forget they have them on. One of the biggest positive comments she gets from patients is her tender loving care and how they enjoy how much time she spends with them. “I want to spend as much time as I can with my patients. I am hands on. I place the braces and all the appliances

“Patients know I am trustworthy and I care. They feel that,” says Dr. John.

s I lay, squished to one side in my king bed that houses myself and my two dogs who collectively weigh more than I do, it should come as no surprise to me that I take up less than ¼ of the bed! If this wasn’t enough to disturb my sleeping, I also often wake up to at least one dog scratching, grunting, rubbing or rolling in the middle of the night. The inevitable “itchies” strike again!

One of the most common and frustrating problems that I deal with as a veterinarian, and as a dog owner, is the itchy dog. “Pruritis,” which is the medical term for itchiness, is frustrating for the dog, the owner, and the veterinarian. Furthermore, pruritis can have many causes, and often can become an expensive condition to diagnose and control, especially in the case of allergies. Diagnostic tests such as skin impressions, skin scrapings, skin cultures, fungal cultures, and allergy testing are often needed. Sometimes even all of these tests don’t elucidate the reason for the itch, and we get left treating a symptom. So you might be thinking, what can be done to help my itchy dog? First, see your veterinarian. It is important that whoever brings Fido to the veterinarian knows the history - there are many questions that a veterinarian might ask that can help figure out the underlying cause of the itch. Second, for successful itch management it is important to see the same veterinarian, especially for the recurrent scenario. Third, it is important to follow the veterinarian’s treatment recommendations, and to monitor and report how the dog responds to those treatments. An itchy dog can sometimes be a complicated scenario and often takes teamwork on the part of the veterinarian and the client.

A Small Hospital Community With Big Hospital Standards

Luckily though, there has recently been a new medical development in the control of itch. Historically, steroids have been used to “break the itch cycle,” and often these have a quick onset and an almost miraculous effect at an affordable price that leaves owners wanting more. Alternatives to steroids are often slower to take effect, not very effective, or very expensive. Unfortunately, the steroids have many adverse effects, drug interactions, side effects, and are not safe for long term use.

Recently, however, a new medication called Apoquel has been approved for the short term and long term control of itch in dogs over 1 year of age. This medication has an excellent safety profile and seems to work very quickly with a typically affordable price, like a steroid, but without all of the adverse side effects. This new medication is coming to a veterinarian near you! Since the company sold a three month supply of the new medication in three weeks, it went on backorder in February. If you have an itchy dog though, call your veterinarian to find out if this medication is available. Luckily, with this new, safe, effective and typically affordable medication the inevitable itchies no longer have to be the infinity itchies! There is hope to effective itch control now more than ever!

veryone looks forward to spring; the blossoms bloom and the lazy hazy days of summer follow. It’s also a time to clean the clutter and start anew.

The City of Margate gives the community a chance to clean their closets, garages and carports and make a little cash in the process. The annual Spring Clean Up and Garage Sale will take place from 7 a.m. to noon Saturday, March 15 at Oriole Park. About 150 community members are expected to set up shop to sell their wares which usually include everything from clothing and shoes to books, trinkets and furniture. The cost for a 15X20 space is $10 for residents and $20 for non-residents. Sellers can set up a table to display their items as needed. Pre-registration for sellers is required by March 13, or until space is full. Last year’s event attracted hundreds of buyers in search of household goods and hidden treasures. “You might find something that you really need for a lot less. Something you could really use,” said Margate Recreation Supervisor Deborah Winograd. “You might also find a treasure.” More than a typical garage sale, the event brings residents together. It’s a community event where you can say hello to old friends and maybe even meet some new ones. “You get to know your neighbors,” Winograd said. “You might even see someone you haven’t seen in a while. It’s a sense of community.”

Legally Speaking

BY OMAR J. ARCIA, ESQ. FORECLOSURE DEFENSE AND BANKRUPTCY PROTECTION ATTORNEY

What Homeowners Need to Know About Florida’s New Speedy Foreclosure Law

A

f ter a t wo year ef for t, Florida legislators approved a new foreclosure law that signif icantly af fects the rights of homeowners struggling to pay their mor tgages. Under the veil of “helping Florida’s economic recover y,” Governor Rick Scot t signed House Bill 87 into law on June 7, 2013. Unless this new law is over turned by the cour ts, it is expected to have a profound impact on the foreclo - sure process in favor of the banks and homeowners’ associations. The new law permits a lender or its ser vicer to f ile a foreclosure action and instead of being re - quired to prove its right to foreclose, it unfairly shif ts the burden on the homeowner to “prove” that the lender “does not have the right ” to foreclose. This new procedure is time sensitive, and if the homeowner does not provide the necessar y evidence, a f inal judgment of foreclosure is entered. In as quickly as 45 days, the proper t y c ould be sold at a foreclosure auction. The new law also provides homeowners’ associations with same expanded rights to quickly evict non - paying homeowners through this new expedited foreclosure process. For homeowners that are behind on their mor tgage or HOA payments (but not yet in foreclosure), it is imperative that you immediately consult with a legal professional about your case. There are a number of “pre foreclosure” steps that must be taken in order to defend yourself and your family from this new speedy foreclosure law. Remember you will only have a limited amount of time (20 days) to prove that the par t y suing for foreclosure does not have the legal right to do so. This means that the evidence needs to be gathered before the foreclosure process star ts, and there are critical requests for information that must be presented to lenders prior to a foreclosure to avoid losing your home. The new speedy foreclosure law also states that if your house is foreclosed on fraudulently, you cannot get it back. You will only be entitled to f ile an action for damages against the lender or other par t y that obtained the wrongful foreclosure. We all know that in foreclosure cases there are a disturbing number of mistakes being made by banks and their at torneys. For those homeown - ers currently in foreclosure, it is critic ally impor tant that any mistakes in the process be identif ied and brought to the at tention of the cour t BEFORE a f inal judgment. In shor t, this new speedy foreclosure law is wrong, and it clearly violates the due process rights of the good citizens of Florida. It will force many more homeowners into bankruptcy as the only reli - able means of saving their home.

More detailed explanations of different options available to homeowners in foreclosure, at risk of foreclosure, or considering bankruptcy are discussed in a new consumerfriendly DVD developed by the Arcia Law Firm entitled “Fight For Your Home,” available for pur-chase on our website. If you mention that you heard about the DVD through this magazine you will receive a FREE copy during the appointment to discuss your case in detail with a member of our qualified legal team. New Juvéderm Voluma™ XC for the Face

T

he aging process results in prominent nasolabial folds, jowls, sagging facial skin, and flattening of cheekbone region. These changes occur as a result of a progressive loss of collagen and elastin of the skin and soft tissue volume in the cheeks. Now, for the first time, a new product from Allergan medical is available to help restore and rejuvenate the midface. Juvéderm Voluma™ XC helps enhance contour and create a more youthful profile for the face for up to 2 years. This hyaluronic acid filler is the first and only FDA-Approved filler for the midface. Voluma XC contains a modified hyaluronic acid (HA) derived from a naturally occurring complex sugar. A special cross-linking process in the synthesis of this product makes it last longer than its Allergan counterpart Juvéderm XC and the other available HA products: Restylane, Perlane, and Belotero.

Before

After Achieve the soft-S curves of a youthful face, also known as the Ogee Curve, as seen on the official site for the makers of Juvéderm Voluma XC at http://www.juvederm. com/professional/voluma/.

The typical youthful face has a high cheekbone and soft gentle curve from the cheekbone downward. This area of the midface follows the shape of a natural-looking ogee curve. As the face ages, there is a progressive flattening of the cheekbone and midface. This resultant loss of volume causes the skin to sag. Soft-tissue volume can be restored to the face by the nonsurgical injections of Juvéderm Voluma™ XC. This procedure involves subcutaneous injection of this filler with a small needle. The Voluma lifts the cheek and restores a more youthful curve to the cheek. The patient may experience mild swelling or bruising at the injection site, and results of a single treatment have lasted up to 2 years in 76% of patients studied. Juvéderm XC can be injected in the lips, nasolabial folds, and other areas of facial wrinkles where superficial injections are indicated. Juvéderm can last up to one year in these areas. The efficacy of Voluma XC injections in other areas of the face has not been assessed. HA fillers like Voluma XC and Juvéderm XC provide immediate results filling facial lines and wrinkles. Sculptra differs from Voluma XC in that the soft tissue enhancement that occurs results from an inflammatory reaction the product causes after it is injected. This reaction can occur over a period of days to months with results lasting up to 2 years. Unfortunately, these results depend on the degree of inflammation and vary from patient to patient. As a result, soft tissue enhancement can be unpredictable. In clinical studies performed with Voluma XC, patients perceived themselves to look 5 years younger 6 months after treatment, and 3 years younger 24 months after the treatment. The aging process is complex. Optimal rejuvenation requires a proper assessment of each patient’s facial anatomy, individual appearance goals, and discussion of the treatment options available, both surgical and nonsurgical. Juvéderm Voluma™ XC is another excellent option available in the array of products available to refresh, rejuvenate, and restore a more youthful appearance to the face.
