Arbor Day Free Tree Giveaway Business & Community Expo Student Scholarships
I love that quote by Ralph Waldo Emerson!
FEATURES
Despite the mundane, routine, day-to-day life we might find ourselves living, complete with “to do” lists and a never-ending in-box, it reminds me that we really should spend more time focusing on the little things and not just the big picture. Most of us are on a path of perpetual motion, but it’s nice to take a detour every once in a while and explore the road less traveled. I have come to realize that even the unexpected bumps in the road are an important part of the journey.

Show Your Support at Business & Community Expo
L
ocal businesses and community members can network and learn more about one another at the inaugural Northwest Broward Business Partner & Community Expo at Margate Middle School. The event will take place from 6 to 9 p.m. May 1 at 500 NW 65 Ave. About 200 exhibitors ranging from wellness groups to insurance agents to restaurants based out of Margate, Coconut Creek, Pompano Beach, North Lauderdale, Lauderdale Lakes, Sunrise, Lauderhill and Tamarac among others are expected to set up informational and interactive booths at the expo. The free event will also include family fun and giveaways. The purpose of the event is to bring business and community members together and to garner new business partners. School business partners are businesses that work hand in hand with education and local schools. “It is meant to be a symbiotic relationship where both parties benefit from working together,” said Margate Middle School assistant principal Andrew Bronstein. “In today’s difficult economic times, with funding being cut in schools, we rely on businesses to help in any facet they can whether it is to provide incentives for our programs, offer opportunities for students who might not receive, educate our youth about the various professions out there, or simply work hand in hand to strengthen the relations of the community,” added Bronstein, who is coordinating the event along with the school’s PTSA. Business partners also get a break on the price of vendor space. Vendor spots are available until April 30, or until space is full. Vendor tables cost $25 for business and community groups and $15 for school business partners. About 500 attendees including parents, community members, school district personnel, families and others are expected to descend upon the expo to check out the variety of vendors who will set up throughout the halls of the school. Another feature at the event will be the Department of Health Wellness Section which will include information as well as a variety of wellness screenings such as hearing and eye checks and various disease screenings. “It is to bring our schools closer together with each other and most importantly the communities we serve while still supporting local businesses and providing a free service to the public of these communities,” Bronstein said. For more information about the expo call 754-322-3800.

Northwest Medical Center Celebrating 30 Years of Service & Expanding to Meet Needs of Community
T
he multi-million dollar expansion of Northwest Medical Center’s ER Department is well underway, and once complete, promises to provide the growing community with increased access to services in a facility customdesigned for patient’s needs. The 17.5 million dollar project will double the number of treatment areas and add more than 25,000 square feet of space to the existing ER. Enhancements include a total of 50 treatment bays with eight fast track bays, an expanded pediatric area and new ambulance and walk-in entrances. The goal of the expansion is to meet the needs of a growing community, explained Mark Rader, CEO of Northwest Medical Center. Last year, the ER saw 49,000 patients. “We are pleased to be able to serve the residents of Coconut Creek and Margate, and to see Coconut Creek grow and expand. We are also growing and expanding to meet their needs,”Rader said. In the pre-construction stages, the input of First Responders was requested so that they, and the ER Department can communicate and work hand in hand with one another. The project is being tackled in two phases. The current Phase 1 consists of building an additional 25,476 square feet of space to the existing department. Phase 2 will involve renovating the existing 14,681 square feet to match the new expansion. There will also be an additional second floor added above the ER. Rader said he expects the entire project will be complete by the middle of 2015. Families with small children will benefit from the expansion of the pediatric area, dedicated entirely to little ones who have emergencies all hours of the day. “Healthcare for children doesn’t have to be provided on a 9 to 5 basis,” Rader said. In conjunction with the construction, the hospital has adopted a new mission statement, created by its employees: “To Provide Exceptional Care to Everyone, Every Day.” “We are very excited about it,” Rader said of the new mission statement. “There was an overwhelming response to create a new one that will meet the needs and get to the heart of everything we do. It’s short, but it’s very powerful in its meaning.” The hospital also rolled out a new vision statement:
www.CoconutCreekCityNews.com
“More than Healing,” and new core values which are “Compassion, Trust, and Respect.” More than just words, employees at Northwest are dedicated to living the mission and values each and every day at work. Administrators and staff know that they will soon be caring for a higher volume of patients and are ready for it. “We are not going to lose sight of treating appropriately and with a high quality of care,” Rader said. In keeping up with technology and helping the patient make better healthcare decisions, Northwest Medical Center partnered with iTriage; a free mobile app that allows you to check symptoms, research diseases, tests and treatments, locate medical providers and connect with your health record. In addition, The Patient Portal allows patients 24hour access to results, personal health information, medication, upcoming appointments and more. For more information about these sites call our free physician referral and health information line at 954.601.8094
This year also marks the 30th anniversary of the hospital. To celebrate the hospital’s anniversary and the NICU upgrade to a Level III, a Baby Shower and upcoming NICU Reunion will take place from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, April 26. The event will reunite families and healthcare providers of Northwest’s NICU. Expectant moms are also invited to learn about the Maternity and Women’s Services at Northwest and enjoy a day of pampering and shopping. “We are very pleased to be serving our community this long and we look forward to the years ahead,” Rader said.
Northwest Medical Center is located at 2801 N. State Road 7, Margate. For more information call 954-974-0400 or visit www.northwestmed.com.

Tax Time
Common Tax Mistakes “Taxes fluctuate due to three areas – income, filing status and possible tax credits and deductions. Not understanding this leads directly to taxpayers making some of the most common filing mistakes and not claiming the most commonly overlooked tax breaks,” said Moin Haroon, Tax Professional from H&R Block’s office at 215 State Road 7 in Margate, Florida.

Sometimes not making enough money to have to file a return can cause people to miss tax credits. Only 20 percent of those eligible claim the Earned Income Tax credit. Generally, anyone earning income should consider filing a return. Because some popular tax breaks expired Dec. 31, some people mistakenly might think they can’t be claimed, but they can still be claimed on the 2013 tax return. These include certain student and teacher tax breaks, homeowner tax breaks, state and local general sales tax deductions, and direct contributions from IR As. Some common clerical errors taxpayers make are: •
Mixing up names and Social Security Numbers
•
Forgetting to include information reported on Form W-2, 1099 forms and other forms
•
Transposing numbers and making math errors
“Talking to a tax professional about their specific needs can ensure taxpayers make smart choices that save them time and money,” said Haroon. For more information, contact Tax Professional Moin Haroon at H&R Block, 215 State Road 7, Margate, telephone 954-984-1743.

Students Receive Scholarships from Coconut Creek Multicultural Circle
T
he Coconut Creek Multicultural Circle has awarded three local high school juniors each with a $500 scholarship. Recipients of the inaugural scholarship are Ashley Browne and Keana White of Coconut Creek High School and Deanna Toledo of Monarch High School. After a formal application process, these students were evaluated and selected based on their application, written essays and interviews. The Circle’s Board approved the award based on the unanimous recommendation of its Scholarship Committee. The Circle teamed up with the Coconut Creek High Schools to create the criteria for the scholarships. Emphasis was placed on promoting a better understanding and appreciation of diverse cultures. The total cash payment of scholarships will be issued to the students after they graduate high school, and after it is verified that they are enrolled in college. Once the scholarship funds are dispersed, the money can be used for books, tuition or anything school-related. The scholarship fund was created through the Circle’s appreciation of the multi-ethnic aspect of the city. The intention is to foster knowledge of diverse cultures so that once students enter the workforce, they will work proficiently with other cultures. In turn, it may further improve their earning capabilities through their understanding of multi-ethic aspects of modern day life. The awards were bestowed upon students who show an interest and understanding of diverse cultures on a global level. The scholarship fund was supported by a recent ArtsFest fundraising event that took place in January at the Community Center. The festival featured multicultural entertainment, face painting, henna and hand painting, caricature drawings, a calligraphy artist, live music and more. Proceeds were earned from booth space rental. The Circle plans to host ArtsFest annually to sustain the scholarship fund. This year’s ArtsFest brought in enough money to cover three scholarships, and the Circle hopes to be able to increase that in the future. “We want this thing to keep going,” said Lata Gangal, the Circle’s president. “What we are trying to do is come up with a plan to build it and make it bigger.” The Coconut Creek Multicultural Circle is a non-profit organization whose mission is to unite the Coconut Creek community by exchanging ideas and sharing, appreciating, and celebrating customs and cultural experiences. In addition to providing scholarships, the Circle is active in the community in a number of ways. Members participate and volunteer at local events including CocoFest and the Butterfly Festival, where they have shared information about the group with the public and passed out flags of all countries to families. The group consists of members of various cultures representing India, Trinidad, China, Jamaica, Germany, Haiti, Poland, Russia and Turkey, among others. The Circle’s March meeting included a visit from a BRACE advisor who shared inside knowledge to help the Circle plan a strategy for future scholarship awards. The scholarship recipients will be invited to speak for five to ten minutes about their interests and goals at the Circle’s April 8 meeting. Members meet the second Tuesday of each month at 6:30 p.m. at the Coconut Creek Community Center, 1100 Lyons Road, Coconut Creek. For more information visit www.coconutcreekmulticultural.webs.com.

Legally Speaking
BY OMAR J. ARCIA, ESQ. FORECLOSURE DEFENSE AND BANKRUPTCY PROTECTION ATTORNEY
How to Combat Light Speed Foreclosures
S
ince June 2013 when the Florida legislature approved additional funding to clear the huge backlog of residential foreclosures, major changes have occurred to the time in which foreclosure c ases are brought to trial. Previously it would take any where bet ween eighteen months to t wo years before a foreclosure case was completed. Today, most foreclosure cases are set for trial or f inal judgment within 6 - 8 months. The goal is to erase the statewide foreclosure backlog by 2016. Based on these state time limits, it may appear that judges in South Florida are more concerned with eliminating the backlog than with dispensing justice. If you are in foreclosure or at risk of foreclosure how c an you c ombat against “light speed” fore - closures? The most impor tant tool you can use to defend against our cour ts’ quest to drain the dockets is to hire a qualif ied and experienced foreclosure defense at torney to guide you through the minef ield of valid de -fenses to a foreclosure action. First, don’t set tle for any thing less than an initial face -to -face meeting with the at torney. Let ’s face it, if they are too busy to meet with you personally to review your case, they will just be “ too busy ” to actually help you with your case. Also, make sure that the at torney has plent y of liti - gation and trial experience (at least 15 years), and that the at torney regularly practices in the count y where your case is pending. Finally, make sure the at torney has a proven track record of outstanding re - sults and satisf ied clients. Ask the at torney to refer you to at least three satisf ied clients. If they refuse to provide you this information, thank the at torney for her time, don’t waste another minute of your time, and leave the of f ice. Another critic al tool to defend against “light speed” foreclosures is to ensure that the law f irm you hire to defend your case has established loan modif ic ation and consumer bankruptcy depar tments. This will give you the ver y best oppor tunit y to save your home. If your legal defenses to the foreclosure c ase are not accepted by the cour t, you can process a loan modif ic ation, reinstatement, or shor t payof f of your loan. If all else fails, right before the foreclosure auction of your home takes place, you c an f ile a consumer bank- ruptcy and at tempt to complete the modif ic ation within the bankruptcy proceeding.
The attorneys at the Arcia Law Firm have more than 40 years combined litigation and trial experi-ence, and we are privileged to successfully represent hundreds of homeowners in our community. We have foreclosure defense, loan modification and bankruptcy departments all in the same of-fice. We will gladly refer you to our satisfied clients so you can be confident in your decision to hire our Firm. If you are struggling to make your monthly mortgage payments, if you are in the middle of a frustrating loan modification process, or if you just received a foreclosure summons, contact the Arcia Law Firm today at 954-437-9066 to schedule a free personal consultation with an attorney (not a paralegal or assistant), or visit www.arcialawfirm.com to schedule your appoint-ment online. Detailed explanations of different options available to homeowners are also discussed in a new DVD developed by the Arcia Law Firm entitled “Fight For Your Home.” If you mention that you heard about the DVD through this magazine, you will receive a complimentary copy during your free consultation to discuss your case in detail with a member of our highly experienced and determined legal team.

Health & Wellness
BY CHARLES A. MESSA, III, M.D., F.A.C.S.
Advances in Breast Augmentation Each woman who considers breast enhancement is a unique individual with personal appearance goals for surgery and her desired aesthetic appearance. This individuality demands a broad range of breast implant options including varying shapes, types, projections and textures. Since the invention of silicone breast implants in 1962, there have been significant advances in implant manufacturing, preoperative planning and surgical techniques. As a result, 316,848 breast augmentations were performed last year making this procedure the second most popular plastic surgery sought by female patients according to the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery. Of the breast enlargement procedures performed, 70 percent of them used silicone implants rather than saline. The old adage “bigger is better” doesn’t universally apply to breast size. In order to achieve the ideal aesthetic result, it’s imperative that each patient is thoroughly evaluated pre-operatively with regard to desired outcome including cup size, upper pole fullness, cleavage and shape. Proper assessment of base width, tissue stretch, and nipple to fold measurements must be taken into consideration. It’s the balance between desired outcome and individual anatomy that ensures the best results. Surgical planning should be based on the patient’s goals, the dimensions of their breast and body and their tissue characteristics. In 2006, the FDA approved a new type of cohesive silicone gel implant, different from the previously manufactured Dow Corning implants in the composition of the gel, making it softer and less likely to leak, rupture or become encapsulated. Today there are three FDA approved silicone implant manufacturers: Mentor (memory gel), Allergan (Natrelle) and, most recently, Sientra. Each of these implants has a different diameter and projection, and each offers various profiles (low, moderate-plus, high) as well as shapes. With all of these variations, implant selection should be individualized, based on the patient’s desired outcome and body type.

The technique used to create the space for the breast implant has improved over the past several years as well. Utilizing meticulous dissection under direct vision decreases trauma to surrounding breast tissue and muscle. Previously, the space or ‘pocket’ was dissected bluntly. This more careful operative technique results in less bleeding, less post-operative pain, a quicker recovery, and theoretically, a lower rate of capsular contracture with less blood and inflammation around the implant surface. Smaller incisions can be used for insertion of the implant as well with the development of the Keller Funnel™. This device is a disposable, FDA approved, cone-shaped funnel with a special hydrophilic interior coating that allows the implant to be placed in the pocket using a ‘no-touch’ technique with less trauma to the breast and implant. Plastic surgery is a combination of art, science, and surgery. Techniques and materials utilized need to be continually evaluated and enhanced to ensure the optimal outcome for each patient. Current trends in aesthetic surgery are focused on the use of autologous fat to reverse the signs of aging. Similarly, fat grafting and lipo-augmentation procedures have been utilized for breast enhancement, both enlargement and reconstruction. The effects of transplanted fat on mammography and potential breast cancer detection are still being studied, as the technique for breast enlargement with fat is improved. For now, the cohesive, and soon-to-be available form-stable, highly cohesive silicone gel implants are a safe and effective way to enhance the appearance of a woman’s breast.

Add Value to Your Property with All Terrain Landscaping

ith a keen eye for aesthetic harmony, horticulturist Mike Squillace has been helping people rejuvenate their landscape design for the last 30 years. His family owned and operated company, All Terrain Landscaping, has created awardwinning landscapes for residential and commercial properties. Squillace moved here from Minnesota. Although he had done odd jobs in landscaping in high school, he did not know it would eventually become a career. He was set on acting and modeling and even appeared on the big screen in the movies Risky Business and Scarface, but changed his focus and attended college for landscape design.
forward to working with him again.” When it comes to landscape themes, customer’s preferences vary. “They choose anything from Mediterranean to Japanese, sometimes Northern or Tropical. It used to be that Queen Palms were popular. Now, it is the Sylvester Palms. They are more hurricane resistant, as well as bug and disease resistant,” says Squillace. For hurricane season, as a licensed tree company, he and his team often find themselves trimming and hauling out trees. He finds that most people don’t think about maintenance. His company also takes care of fertilization, maintenance and irrigation upgrades.
He also began pursuing another pastime - treasure hunting. Sailing to different regions of the world to free dive and look for treasure, Squillace has lived many adventures. This has become a second business as he searches for people’s lost items and recovers them. But Squillace’s mainstay is landscaping. He has five acres of property where he resides in Parkland, which includes a nursery.
“When I get there, everything is usually a mess. We make sure everything is in place. We are very prompt. We stand behind the work. We have received a 5 star rating, which is hard to get in 30 years. We have fast turnarounds and give free estimates. We have won a dozen beautification awards,” says Squillace.
“Customers come and pick up items here. They select the plant materials. Most of the time, they want to come and see what they are buying. We have flowers, bushes, trees, palms. We also put in crushed rock, mulch, and sod,” says Squillace.
In addition, Squillace is big on giving back. He does a lot of charity work. “I have donated free trees to Stoneman Douglas. [I have done work for] Kol Tikvah, Coral Springs Christian School, Mary Help of Christian and Calvary Chapel … I love to give. It is a good feeling. I believe I have always been blessed. I want to give back to others,” he says.
His expertise comes in the design aspect of the business. “I can do it in my sleep,” says Squillace. “I am great at taking existing landscaping and adding to it. I like to listen to customers and suggest things and we pick out [products needed together].” David Blessing agrees. A neighbor of Squillace, he had the All Terrain team work on his entire house. “Mike is a very professional perfectionist,” says Blessing. “He does an excellent job in design and installation. He is a pleasure to work with. He does jaw-dropping work. He is a landscape artist. He has an eye for what type of plants grow in what location. I have a nursery on my property and he is guiding me [into what to put where].” Blessing, who works in construction, also worked with Squillace professionally. He explains, “I had an opportunity to work with him before. I am looking

Rabbi Moshe Rabin is happy with the work Squillace’s team has done. “He did work at my house and also at Rohr Bais Chaya Academy and at the synagogue, Chabad of Coral Springs. He did landscaping, tree planting. He is a great guy to work with. I would highly recommend him. He has great customer service. He is always looking to please, asking ‘what can we do to make you happy?’” Squillace adds, “I like dealing with the customer one-onone.” All Terrain Landscaping handles clients anywhere in Broward and sometimes in Miami and Palm Beach. They have worked with both residential and commercial clients, including the City of Parkand, WCI and Lennar Homes. “This is not packaged landscape,” says Squillace. “It is all creative.”
Dear Mike, Just wanted to thank you again for the wonderful job you did for us. I can’t believe it only took a little over a day for you to remove our forty ficus trees, all of which were between 10 and 25 feet tall, and then grind the stumps below surface level. Your expert crew neatly gathered the trimmings alongside our home for easy bulk pick up. The new Areka Palms and mulch you installed in their place are truly beautiful. Your guys were professional, friendly, and by the time they left not a single leaf, twig or piece of debris was left on our property or our adjacent neighbors. We chose you primarily based on price but will always use you again due to your friendliness, professionalism and great job done. Sincerely, Fred and Laurie, Parkland, FL Rating - ★★★★★ 5.0 Customer Carrie S. posted the following rating on the HomeAdvisor Pro website: No one could believe what they accomplished in one day. They had a team working, removing stumps and bad plants, leveling ground, fixing sprinkler system, and putting in plants and sod. They also removed the walkway and patio and put in a new one. They explained everything they were doing and why. They had told me that the job should be finished in five days. I thought all of it could notbe done in that time period - but it was completed in less time and done beautifully. Some of the houses nearby having the same work done took weeks and mine looked better than theirs. When not working, Squillace, whose name means “overwhelming force,” is apt to be doing martial arts, treasure hunting or spending time with friends and family. He has twin sons and a daughter.

MAKING SPORT PARTICIPATION SAFE Concussion. What was once a word mostly associated with professional athletes has now become a worry for parents of athletes of all ages. While a standard sports physical is required by nearly all school and youth sports leagues, this will not provide doctors with important information about a child’s cognitive abilities should a concussion occur. A baseline concussion test will provide physicians valuable clinical information to use if a child suffers a concussion. A complete history and physical along with the baseline concussion test is the best way to protect a young athlete’s safety. For the health and well-being of our community’s student athletes, Broward Health Urgent Care is offering the following exams at all three urgent care centers:
Sports Physical & EKG $65 • Baseline Concussion Testing $15 Total: $80
Ages 10-18 years. By appointment only. Insurance does not cover these exams. Payment will be due at the time of the appointment.
