Regional Robotics Competition City Hall in the Mall Alumni Showcase Night at the Derby Coral Springs Senior Open

“Life is a journey, not a destination.” I love that quote by Ralph Waldo Emerson! Despite the mundane, routine, day-to-day life we might find ourselves living, complete with “to do” lists and a never-ending in-box, it reminds me that we really should spend more time focusing on the little things and not just the big picture. Most of us are on a path of perpetual motion, but it’s nice to take a detour every once in a while and explore the road less traveled. I have come to realize that even the unexpected bumps in the road are an important part of the journey. Flip through this issue and you’ll find plenty of examples of individuals and organizations that are focusing on the journey, doing exceptional things, including the team of students at Stoneman Douglas that are participating in a Regional Robotics Competition (page 10). We also catch up with an interesting group - JPT Taravella theatre alumni - and uncover what they’ve been up to (page 14). Whether they win first place or make it to Broadway, it doesn’t matter and these guys really get that!

Team “Breaking Bot” Enters Regional Robotics Competition

FIRST ROBOTICS TEAM Students from Stoneman Douglas formed the Breaking Bot robotics team. Pictured from left to right: Karel Klos, Isaac Hetzroni, Jake Schlinkmann, Zachary Weingarten, Bryan Weissman. Photo submitted.

M

arjory Stoneman Douglas’ robotics team, Breaking Bot, will put their talent to the test during the South Florida FIRST Robotics Competition, April 3-5 at the Fort Lauderdale Convention Center. The team, founded this school year by Douglas seniors Jake Schlinkmann, Bryan Weissman, and Zach Weingarten and faculty advisor Frank Krar, began work on their robot on January 4th. Made up of 20 students in grades 9-12, the team was awarded a $6000 grant from NASA and a $5000 grant from Motorola in their inaugural year for competition fees and general expenses. “We’re all excited to be a part of Douglas’s first robotics team. We’ve been working so hard on our robot, and we can’t wait for competition in April,” stated Team Captain Jake Schlinkmann. On the first Saturday of January the team received a “kit of parts,” or essentials to build a basic robot, and a NASA video explaining the challenge for that year. This year, the challenge is to hurl a two-foot diameter exercise ball into a goal eight feet high. The team was given six weeks to build the robot, and

10

once the six weeks were up, the team was required to seal the robot in a plastic bag. It can only be taken out on the day of competition, when the students will be given the opportunity to practice and later compete in a three-on-three match. The competition is open to spectators, and Jake said he hopes to have a large showing of support from fellow students and community members.

the team simply as “super awesome”.

Team members spent many hours in the garage at Jake’s home, building and testing the robot.

“We also want to inspire other teams and mentor other teams,” Jake said.

“It was a lot of hours,” Jake said. “It was at least four hours a day and about 12 hours on Saturdays.”

Winners of the South Florida competition will be given the opportunity to compete at the national competition in St. Louis for free, a savings of $5,000.

“These are some of Douglas’ brightest STEM students. These students are really dedicated, and have given up a lot of nights and weekends to work on this is, but they love it. On this project the students really have an opportunity to put all that brain power to work and watch as their hard work turns into a functioning piece of engineering,” stated faculty advisor Frank Krar. Breaking Bot, Jake said, was fortunate to have had great mentors backing them including Jake’s dad who has an engineering background. Jake describes

“One of our main goals is to compete and also spreading the message about STEM,” said Jake, a senior who plans to attend Florida Polytechnic University after graduation. Attending college nearby will give him the opportunity to assist other schools in starting up similar programs, he said.

“I would encourage students to get involved if they are interested,” Jake said of STEM. “It’s a one of a kind experience.” In addition to their work on the robot the students have created a website and YouTube videos to show the progress of their work. Visit their website at www.team5196.com. For information on the FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) Robotics Competition, visit their website at firstinflorida.com

Located inside the Coral Square Mall, the Coral Springs City Hall satellite office touts a number of services to citizens who happen to be passing through the mall, or want the convenience of no appointment necessary, and oftentimes, no wait. City Hall in the Mall is currently located in the southwest quadrant of the mall and offers dozens of resources to residents ranging from bicycle registration to passport service. The location opened in 1995 for the convenience of the city’s residents. “We wanted to bring the government to the people,” said Marie Giacalone, Senior Community Relations Coordinator for the City of Coral Springs, who has been involved with City Hall in the Mall since its inception. Passports, she said, are one of the most popular services they offer, she added. On a recent Saturday trained staff members processed 145 passports in one single day. The location is a passport facility for the State Department. “It’s a one stop shop. They do all the paperwork here,” Giacalone said. If we are busy it takes 20 minutes to a half hour. City Hall in the Mall has had a hand in helping the community in more than one way. For instance, the location hosts the annual Giving Tree event. Each holiday season local sponsors donate food items to build a giant “tree” inside City Hall in the Mall. In December, all of the products are donated to needy families in the city of Coral Springs. Organizers also collect toys, cash and food items for the public through the project. City Hall in the Mall is located at the southwest entrance of the Coral Square Mall, 9239 W. First Ever Alumni Showcase for JP Taravella Theatre Students

H

undreds of JP Taravella High School theatre department alumni, family, friends and community members gathered to recognize the positive long-term impact that arts can have on a student’s life during the first ever Alumni Showcase in March. Held in conjunction with Theatre in Our Schools Month, more than 70 alumni from a number of graduating classes attended the weekend-long event which included a happy hour, family picnic and alumni showcase with a variety of performances. Former students who are currently working in professional theatre, at cruise lines, in theme parks and those who did not pursue careers in theatre came to celebrate the program and to honor theatre teacher Lori Sessions, and her two decades of dedication to the school and the arts. “It was incredible. It was more than I could ever have imagined,” Sessions said. The weekend kicked off on a Friday night with happy hour at Bru’s Room, followed by a family picnic at Riverside Park on Saturday, and the Alumni Showcase at the school on Sunday. Former students, some of whom are now professional actors, doctors and soldiers, once again stepped onto the stage at their alma mater to perform for the crowd. The day included a medley of shows, some of which included high school performances revisited. “There was a wide variety,” said Sessions. “It’s showcasing that theatre is still a big part of their lives.” Danielle Porcellini, a 2007 Taravella graduate who participated in theatre all four years at Taravella, has worked as a professional actress in Colorado and as a professional singer on Holland America Cruise Line since her high school graduation. She is currently living in New York City where she is pursuing acting. Porcellini said her life would not be the same today if it wasn’t for the program and mentorship of Sessions. “She was never just a teacher to me,” Porcellini said, adding that Sessions has been a mentor, a friend and idol to her. “Some people love teaching, but she loves it in a completely different way. Her own personal life always came second.” Regardless of their chosen field of work, it is evident that theatre has had an impact on each and every one of the student’s lives, Sessions explained. The alumni credited theatre for helping them as professionals whether it be communicating with customers, instructing students or delivering a commencement speech. Theatre helps students develop confidence, public speaking and communication skills, among others, Sessions said. Zachary Durand, said he “owes everything” to

Sessions. Durand, a 2010 Taravella graduate, currently works as an agent’s assistant in the entertainment industry in New York City. Sessions, he said, provided him with an endless amount of wisdom, guidance and support. “She was a huge catalyst and influence for me to continue in the industry.” Durand said Sessions teaches students not only the acting side of theatre, but also the technical and business side, preparing them for a host of opportunities in the field. Sessions described seeing former students from the past 20 years as “Kind of a surreal experience.” Unlike a reunion where one specific graduating year is included, the alumni showcase opened up the opportunity to a range of students.

“The weekend was such a gift,” Sessions said. “Frequently you launch [the students] into the world and don’t see them again. It was a gift to see them again.” And with the reunion, all those little words of wisdom that Session has shared with her students over the years came flooding back, proving in fact that those words were heard loud and clear. However, it wasn’t specific words so much that Porcellini remembers, but actions. “More than something she said, is something she did. It was never about her, it was always about us.”

Saddle Up for A Night at the Derby

T

o generate awareness of Glycogen Storage Disease (GSD ), a rare metabolic disorder, and to raise money to fund research for a cure, South Florida moms Lisa Hodes of Parkland, and Meredith Gussin of Miami, will cochair A Night at the Derby. The eighth annual fundraising event will take place from 7 p.m. to midnight, Saturday, April 26, at the Bonaventure Resort and Spa in Weston. Proceeds will benefit The Children’s Fund for GSD Research.

GSD EVENT CO-CHAIRS Meredith Gussin (left) and Lisa Hodes at last year’s Speakeasy themed Glycogen Storage Disease fundraiser. This year’s fundraiser, A Night at the Derby, includes dinner, dancing, and plenty of derby excitement that will raise money for The Children’s Fund for GSD Research.

Currently, there is no cure for GSD. Children who are afflicted with GSD, a disorder centered in the liver, are on a limited diet and are required to drink uncooked cornstarch every one to three hours around the clock to maintain safe blood glucose levels. The complex carbohydrate helps regulate GSD. What that means for Hodes is waking up at 3 a.m. every morning to give her two girls, ages 12 and 15, cornstarch so they can get safely through the night. Although she hasn’t had a full night sleep in almost 16 years, she has to remain vigilant or the consequences could be devastating.

“It’s like a car that runs out of gas,” explained Hodes, Vice President and Fundraising Chair of The Children’s Fund for GSD Research. “When you have a full tank, you are fine. They just run out of fuel.” When individuals with GSD “run out of fuel” it can be life threatening with effects including seizures or even death. The only way to minimize symptoms is to closely monitor blood sugar levels and adjust diet. “The only thing that regulates it is Argo Cornstarch,” Hodes said. “It’s a complex carbohydrate and the body takes a long time to digest it.” The deadly disorder affects about 1 in every 100,000 individuals, including Hodes’ daughters, and Gussin’s one year old son. All three were born with GSD. In children afflicted with GSD1, a specific enzyme that breaks down certain carbohydrates including glycogen (a stored form of sugar), is either missing or not functioning properly. Both parents have to be carriers of the disease in order to pass it onto their children. The Children’s Fund is a non-profit foundation committed to funding research so that children born with GSD1 will benefit from early detection, treatment and an eventual cure. Since 2002 the Fund has raised approximately $6 million for the cause. The non-profit organization was established by a Connecticut couple whose son was diagnosed with GSD. Guests of Derby Night are asked to wear their best derby attire to participate in a night filled with southern flair, food, raffles, mint juleps and entertainment to benefit the cause. Last year’s event attracted close to 400 people and raised $275,000 for the Children’s Fund.

“It’s our biggest fundraiser,” said Hodes. “It’s important because it raises a lot of awareness. We are really dedicated to spreading the word.” The number of children diagnosed with GSD has tripled in size over the past six years due to increased awareness and education of the disease. Tickets to the event are $150 person and can be purchased through the www.curegsd.org website. Sponsorships are also available.

Take a Swing at Coral Springs Senior Open

M

ore than just a casual game of golf, the Coral Springs Senior Open raises thousands of dollars for charity each year. This year, top-notch players including Danny Edwards and Blaine McAllister, will par ticipate in the Coral Spring tournament April 7-10 at TPC at Eagle Trace, 1111 Eagle Trace Blvd. Proceeds from the event will benefit the World Institute of Pain Foundation (WIP). The Open, now in its four th year at the Coral Springs location, raised more than $19,000 dollars last year for the tournament charity, WIP. Proceeds are raised through entr y fees, sponsorship fees and donations. This year, organizers hope to raise $60,000 for the cause. The WIP Foundation is a non-profit organization that has many facets, with a primar y focus of providing medical needs to people in third world countries. This is the four th year that the Open, par t of the Sunbelt Senior Tour, has been held at the Coral Springs location. The title sponsor of the event is Dr. Ira Fox of Anesthesia Pain Care Consultants in Tamarac. This is the third year in a row that Dr. Fox has made a commitment to the tournament and the charity by accepting the title sponsor role. An avid golfer who is heavily involved in WIP, Dr. Fox became involved in the tournament to give back to the world wide community who suf fer with pain. The Sunbelt Senior Tour has been running for 18 years and is the largest Senior Professional Golf Tour in the countr y under the Champions Tour. Many of the tours members are current Champions Tour Members that use the Cancun Sunbelt Senior Tour as a training ground to stay sharp until they can earn fully exempt status on the Champions Tour. There are also a large number of other professionals that have spent many years on the PGA Tours, European Tour or Nationwide Tours and are aspiring to earn full exempt status on the Champions Tour. Some of the early players to commit to the Coral Springs Senior Open were Danny Edwards, six Time PGA Tour Winner; Blaine McAllister, five Time PGA Tour Winner; Marco Dawson 20 Year PGA Tour Veteran; Marc Farr y, European Tour Star and Winner; and Steen Tinning, European Tour Star and Winner. There are several Open festivities that are free and open to the public at no charge. Spectators are allowed to watch the Championship rounds for free, but must call in advance. The schedule is as follows: Pro-Am - April 7th at 1 p.m. Shotgun Golf Tournament - April 7th at 1 p.m. (Openings still available for amateurs); Championship rounds - April 8th 10th, tee time is at 8 a.m. TPC Eagle Trace is a proud member of the ClubLink family of outstanding golf clubs. Opened in 1983 as the first member-based club in the PGA TOUR’s Tournament Players Club network, TPC Eagle Trace is an Ar thur Hills design that hosted the PGA TOUR’s Honda Classic nine times. The benefits of the Senior Open is two-fold explained tournament director Tom Eubank. “The number one reason is for the charity. The secondar y mission is to bring in the top quality senior players.” The tournament travels throughout the east coast raising money for a variety of causes. Charities suppor ted in conjunction with the Sunbelt Senior Professional Golf Tour events have received over $2 million in contributions. Jump for Joy! Monkey Joe’s Opens in Coral Springs

A

fter much anticipation, Monkey Joe’s is now open in Coral Springs. And this place has been really hopping! After a successful run in Boca Raton, owner Craig Schnuer decided to open a second location. The concept is simple – seven huge inflatables and an arcade for the kids and a comfortable lounging area complete with Wi-Fi and five flat screen TVs for the parents. After bouncing to their heart’s content, kids can take their parents by the hand to the concession stand where they will find pizza, nachos, popcorn, hot dogs, ice cream, fountain sodas, icees and much more. Kids can go home with prizes from the redemption games. Instead of having to cart around a long string of tickets, all their points go on a card, which makes it much simpler. Employee Julio Soto, 19, who also likes to play games here when not working, says, “At other places, you don’t get many tickets. Here, you get a lot. I love it.” There are a wide range of fun games available, including touch screen games, over 32 in all. Monkey Joe’s is the perfect place to go for a large group or a party. Their multiple party rooms hold up to 24 kids for a 2-hour party. Kids have plenty of time for free play before being called back in the room for pizza. The mascot, Monkey Joe himself, is sure to stop by. He goes bananas for the Conga line! The birthday boy or girl gets to be king or queen for the day in an inflatable chair at the head of the table and go home with a present. Parents are pleased because they don’t have to set up or clean up. Invitations, drinks, paper plates, tablecloth, utensils and goody bags are included, as well as a party host to make sure everyone has a great time. Before becoming part of the Monkey Joe’s family, Craig was involved in “corporate America”. He did some research online and found that there were over 58 Monkey Joe’s nationwide. After visiting a few, he knew he had found the perfect concept for this area. With kids of his own, he had that parental insight to know that this would be a place kids would love. After all, kids can bounce, hop, slide, and even play games like basketball on the inflatables. He also knew parents would feel comfortable letting their children (under age 12) run free through the 17,000 square feet locale. Craig understands that safety is a big concern so he employs Monkey Joe’s Access Child Control System. Kids receive arm bands that match their parents and employees check the match as parent and child leaves. In addition, he uses Swisher Hygiene, to make sure that all the surfaces in the facility are as clean and sanitary as possible. “We strive to offer peace of mind to parents by offering the highest standards of safety and cleanliness,” says Sonny Crumpton, brand leader for Monkey Joe’s. Craig, who lives in Coral Springs, decided in 2012 to sell his initial location in Boca Raton, which opened in 2010, in order to focus on this new location. He can already see that the decision is paying off as the number of people coming through the door continues to increase.

MONKEYING AROUND Owner Craig Schnuer and mascot, MJ, have been “going bananas” since the opening of the Coral Springs location. Kids can bounce, hop and slide, play in the arcade, win prizes and recharge their battery at the concession. And they really flip for a birthday bash at Monkey Joe’s!

Besides the kid-friendly fun and parental comfort, Craig says that Monkey Joe’s is great for South Florida because of the weather. “It’s hot down here; you’ve got to be indoors,” says Craig. “You can’t be in a park, the weather becomes unbearable … and the bugs. But the weather’s always perfect in Monkey Joe’s.” Another benefit is that kids get their daily dose of exercise with ease! The Center for Disease Control (CDC) recommends at least 60 minutes of exercise a day and, here, kids can jump and run, and stay healthy, without even knowing it. Plus, smart moms and dads know that kids who exercise are able to sleep better at night, which may benefit the parents even more! Summer camp season is just around the corner, and Criag

says this is the perfect place-to-be. Besides camps, he also caters to fundraisers, schools, day care centers and other group outings. Smaller kids under 2 can even play in a room of their own. (Make sure your child wears socks as they do not allow shoes on inflatables). Older siblings can hang out in the arcade while the little ones bounce. Let your kids monkey around at Monkey Joe’s, located at 10301 Royal Palm Blvd. For more information, call 954796-6500 or visit www.monkeyjoes.com.

I am a 35-year-old woman with two children, ages 3 and 5. My husband and I have been together for 11 years, and married for 8. Overall, our marriage has been good, but the problem is, our sex life has dwindled to almost nothing. We are intimate maybe once or twice a month (we used to have sex several times a week), and I am starting to feel very disconnected. I think he’s feeling it too, but neither of us has initiated a conversation to discuss the situation – I think we are both afraid that talking about it will somehow make the problem more real. We are good friends, very rarely argue, and are both very devoted parents. I know that I still love my husband and truly believe that he loves me just as much, just don’t know how to get the spark back in our marriage. Please help – your suggestions would be very much appreciated.

Lowest Prices Period!

You are not alone! Many couples experience a decline in their sex life after they have children. A combination of the change in lifestyle, focus on children, and sometimes total exhaustion at the end of the day affects couples in ways that they never anticipated. Our first suggestion is that you talk to your husband about your concerns in a way that lets him know that you are not criticizing him, but looking to find a solution that will bring you both closer once again. In terms of finding solutions, remember that while intimacy was a natural part of your daily lives before you had children, now it’s something that you may have to actually plan for. Many couples find that scheduling a “date night” once a week (if possible), is very helpful. It will give you the chance to focus on each other for the evening, and reconnect you as a couple. Also, trying something new might be helpful – a new restaurant, and new hobby that you can share together, or find something that you enjoyed together early in your relationship that you have lost along the way. Everything you have told us indicates that you have a happy and healthy relationship; it’s just time to re-ignite that romance. Open and honest conversation is the first step. Sometimes couples find it hard to navigate some of the issues on their own. If you and your husband find it difficult we hope you will consider couples counseling so you may enrich your relationship. Best, Karen and Debbie

Make Healthy Aging Your New Way of Life

W

e always hear the term “anti-aging,” but maybe it’s time we re-think our intentions as we get older. The reality is that we can’t avoid aging. To spend our lives fighting the aging process is simply a losing battle. But we can ensure that as we age, we do so in the healthiest way possible. Healthy aging is a much more achievable way of life. Rather than trying to work against nature, we should embrace our bodies as they change over the years and make the most of what we have every day. We all know that a good diet and exercising make for healthy bodies, but we should always be aware of the importance of staying active and eating well. Many times when people think of exercise, they think it has to be strenuous and painful. But exercise doesn’t have to be torture. Find activities you like, and you will want to keep doing them. Go for a brisk stroll after dinner with a loved one. Make a garden and tend to it. Take a bike ride along the beach. Practice some yoga. Put on your favorite tunes and dance while you do your chores. Set a goal and work toward it. Participate in healthy activities that put a smile on your face. When we exercise, our brain releases a

neurotransmitter called dopamine, which promotes mental well-being and counters negative mental states. Dopamine can create the same addictive cycles as those seen with negative substances and behaviors, but when you’re addicted to exercise the outcome is much healthier. So while it may be tough to get in the habit of exercising, before you know it, you’ll be craving the physical activity that will do your body good. When it comes to eating, a lower carbohydrate, low fat, and high protein, fruit and vegetable diet of small portions throughout the day is pretty hard to argue against. But it’s important to be mindful of what you’re eating every time you make a decision about what to feed your body.

Lastly, the importance of having healthy relationships with people as you age is paramount. A recent study showed that older people in social isolation have a higher risk of dying than those who were near family and friends. But we didn’t really need a scientific study to tell us that we feel better when we’re around people we love and when we belong to a community. Remember to stay socially active. Volunteer with an organization you feel passionate about, whether it’s religious or not. Associate yourself with people who are smarter than you – give yourself the opportunity to learn. And when it comes to your significant other, maintaining a healthy intimate relationship will keep you feeling young for years and years. So we don’t need to fear getting older, nor should we try to fight aging. Keep up with good habits, and you will enjoy healthy aging for many years to come.

Even if you find yourself in front of a sprawling buffet, pay attention to what you’re putting on your plate and remember that everything you put in your mouth has a consequence – and of course, you want more positive than negative.

Dr. Simon Wong, D.O., practices internal medicine at his office at 9750 NW 33rd Street, Suite 210 in Coral Springs. To find out more about healthy aging, contact Dr. Wong at 954-603-5508.

Also be aware that our bodies are always changing and that you will probably need a little help from supplements. But don’t try to figure out the wide world of supplements on your own. Talk to your physician or dietician about which ones are right for you.

AMD by itself does not cause complete blindness. However, the loss of central or straight vision can interfere with simple everyday activities, such as recognizing people’s faces, driving, reading, writing, or doing close work, such as cooking or fixing things around the house. Age-Related Macular Degeneration

Age is the major risk factor. Other factors that can increase your chance of developing AMD are race (White/Caucasian), family history, and smoking. In the early stages of AMD, patients may have no symptoms. Only a comprehensive dilated eye exam done by a trained eye care professional such as a Retina specialist can detect early AMD. If you are at risk for AMD because of age, family history, lifestyle, or some combination of these factors, you should not wait to experience changes in vision before getting checked by a trained eye care professional for AMD. Some common symptoms are: a gradual loss of ability to see objects clearly, distorted vision, and a dark or empty area appearing in the center of vision.

Treatment for AMD depends on whether you have dry or wet AMD. Researchers at the National Eye Institute tested whether taking nutritional supplements could protect against AMD in the Age-Related Eye Disease Studies (AREDS). They found that daily intake of certain high-dose vitamins and minerals can slow progression of the disease in people who have dry AMD. Some vitamin supplements may have complications and risks. Tell your doctor if you smoke or have smoked in the past, because beta carotene supplements have been associated with a higher risk of lung cancer in smokers. AREDS formulation is not a cure. It does not help people with early AMD, and will not restore vision already lost from AMD. But it may delay the onset of late AMD.

Untreated Wet AMD results in severe vision loss. Early detection and timely intervention with a revolutionary class of medications known as VEGF inhibitors is critical to preventing loss of vision and sometimes improving vision. Often these medications are given on a monthly basis. The timely detection and ongoing treatment of Wet AMD is a complex process that is best handled by a trained Retina specialist and requires specialized diagnostic testing such as Fluorescein and IcG angiography and OCT. For people with advanced AMD with poor vision, low vision rehabilitation devices and services maybe extremely useful. Presently there are many low vision devices to choose from; each designed to meet the individual need with function and ease of use. A professional trained in low vision rehabilitation should be consulted in the care of patients with severe vision loss. Bunions - To Cut or Not to Cut? I n this article we will talk about a common foot condition, called bunion. Bunion, also known as hallux abductovalgus is frequently seen in my practice. Unlike a common belief that it is caused by high heel shoes, it is hereditary in nature. In addition to genetic factors, there are biomechanical factors as well (for example, a flat foot type).

Typical symptoms of a bunion include pain over the bony prominence, caused by shoe irritation. As the joint becomes arthritic, pain with range of motion is seen. Other common symptoms include burning or numbness.

A bunion is often described as a bump on the side of the big toe. But a bunion is more than just that. The visible bump actually reflects changes in the bony framework of the front part of the foot. The big toe leans toward the second toe, rather than being straight. This throws the bones out of alignment – producing the bunion’s “bump”. Bunion is a progressive disorder. Initial clinical signs include the big toe leaning slightly towards the second toe and a small prominence over the big toe joint. As the condition progresses, which takes a long time, the big toe takes the place of the second, causing a complete dislocation of the second toe joint. As this happens, the “bump” becomes very significant.

Diagnosis of the condition is clinical. X-rays are utilized to evaluate severity of the condition as well presence of arthritis in the joint. Treatments for hallux abductovalgus deformity can be divided into conservative and surgical. Conservative treatments include wider toe box shoes, anti-inflammatory medications, cortisone injections in cases of acute inflammation, physical therapy and custom orthotics. Custom orthotics (inserts in shoes) will help to slow the deformity down, but NOT reverse it. The conservative treatments are successful in terms of easing the symptoms, however, they will not get rid of the deformity. The only way to permanently get rid of bunion deformity is through a surgical approach. There are many different procedures available. Most procedures involve cutting the bone (1st metatarsal) and moving it

over. The bone cut can be made at different levels, which determines post-operative protocol. Most of the time the 1st metatarsal is cut at the distal portion, which allows immediate weight bearing after surgery. In rare case of a significant deformity, the bone is cut proximally, which requires 6 weeks non weight bearing on crutches. So the question that many patients with the bunion deformity are faced with is: To cut or not to cut? My advice to those patients depends on amount of pain they experience. If there is no or minimal pain, I suggest to address the condition conservatively. The only time I recommend surgery is if pain is present daily and if it interferes with daily activities. Only patients can properly answer that question.

Let’s Talk Zinc Oxide What is Zinc? Zinc is a trace element that was found to be essential for human health in the 19 6 0’s. It is an impor tant cofactor in our body (helping over 30 0 enzymes function optimally) and is integral in aiding our cells to function properly. Zinc def iciency (a lack of Zinc) has been implicated in many Dermatologic diseases. Zinc Oxide is a metal oxide that also has a wide prof ile in Dermatology. Most of us know it as a popular physical sunscreen ingredient to block ultraviolet damage from the sun. Other uses for Zinc Oxide exist in Dermatology as well.

Zinc Oxide Use Beyond Sunscreen For more than 20 years, Zinc Oxide has been used as an ef fective dressing in f inger tip and sof t tissue injuries. More recently, rec alcitrant venous leg ulcers have been successfully treated with Zinc Oxide paste bandages. This has led to its use in weekly-applied, c ompression dressings af ter leg surgical procedures to promote wound healing. In several dif ferent clinical studies, Zinc Oxide has also demonstrated ef fectiveness in treating perianal eczema, diaper dermatitis (rash) and thick, hyper trophic scars. Since 50% of infants have suf fered from diaper dermatitis at some point in time, restoring the proper ties of the skin with Zinc Oxide paste has been a break through. Bedridden elderly have also benef it ted from topical applic ation of Zinc Oxide paste to avoid or improve skin breakdown and redness.

Available Zinc Products Calamine lotion, an over-the - c ounter topic al product, has zinc as a key ingredient. It is used to treat minor skin ailments such as bites and stings from insects, eczema, poison iv y, rashes, and sunburn. In suppositor y formulation, it is used for hemorrhoids and f issures.

Advances in Breast Augmentation Each woman who considers breast enhancement is a unique individual with personal appearance goals for surgery and her desired aesthetic appearance. This individuality demands a broad range of breast implant options including varying shapes, types, projections and textures. Since the invention of silicone breast implants in 1962, there have been significant advances in implant manufacturing, preoperative planning and surgical techniques. As a result, 316,848 breast augmentations were performed last year making this procedure the second most popular plastic surgery sought by female patients according to the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery. Of the breast enlargement procedures performed, 70 percent of them used silicone implants rather than saline.

The old adage “bigger is better” doesn’t universally apply to breast size. In order to achieve the ideal aesthetic result, it’s imperative that each patient is thoroughly evaluated pre-operatively with regard to desired outcome including cup size, upper pole fullness, cleavage and shape. Proper assessment of base width, tissue stretch, and nipple to fold measurements must be taken into consideration. It’s the balance between desired outcome and individual anatomy that ensures the best results. Surgical planning should be based on the patient’s goals, the dimensions of their breast and body and their tissue characteristics.

In 2006, the FDA approved a new type of cohesive silicone gel implant, different from the previously manufactured Dow Corning implants in the composition of the gel, making it softer and less likely to leak, rupture or become encapsulated. Today there are three FDA approved silicone implant manufacturers: Mentor (memory gel), Allergan (Natrelle) and, most recently, Sientra. Each of these implants has a different diameter and projection, and each offers various profiles (low, moderate-plus, high) as well as shapes. With all of these variations, implant selection should be individualized, based on the patient’s desired outcome and body type. The technique used to create the space for the breast implant has improved over the past several years as well. Utilizing meticulous dissection under direct vision decreases trauma to surrounding breast tissue and muscle. Previously, the space or ‘pocket’ was dissected bluntly. This more careful operative technique results in less bleeding, less post-operative pain, a quicker recovery, and theoretically, a lower rate of capsular contracture with less blood and inflammation around the implant surface. Smaller incisions can be used for insertion of the implant as well with the development of the Keller Funnel™. This device is a disposable, FDA approved, cone-shaped funnel with a special hydrophilic interior coating that allows the implant to be placed in the pocket using a ‘no-touch’ technique with less trauma to the breast and implant. Plastic surgery is a combination of art, science, and surgery. Techniques and materials utilized need to be continually evaluated and enhanced to ensure the optimal outcome for each patient. Current trends in aesthetic surgery are focused on the use of autologous fat to reverse the signs of aging. Similarly, fat grafting and lipo-augmentation procedures have been utilized for breast enhancement, both enlargement and reconstruction. The effects of transplanted fat on mammography and potential breast cancer detection are still being studied, as the technique for breast enlargement with fat is improved. For now, the cohesive, and soon-to-be available form-stable, highly cohesive silicone gel implants are a safe and effective way to enhance the appearance of a woman’s breast.

Acupuncture for Infertility

M

any couples struggling to conceive know the heartache of infertility and many people are open to trying anything to help them conceive. The good news is that Acupuncture can help!

Acupuncture, when used in conjunction with Western treatments, will increase conception by 26%. Acupuncture has been practiced for thousands of years and still is around today because IT WORKS! Infertility plagues approximately 7.3 million women of childbearing age each year. Acupuncture involves the insertion of painless, very thin, sterile needles into specific points on the body. These points, when needled, can regulate the way in which the body functions.

Acupuncture is similar to physical therapy in that it is a process oriented method of medical intervention. Patients are commonly treated three to four months before progressing to insemination, in vitro fertilization (IVF) or donor egg. Most miscarriages occur within the first three months of pregnancy, consequently patients should continue with treatments up to week twelve. According to John Norian, MD, a reproductive endocrinologist at HRC Fertility in Southern California, “Acupuncture improves fertility by helping blood flow to the uterus and ovaries and the better the blood flow the more likely an embryo is to implant.” Acupuncture can treat many different causes of infertility, including but not limited to thyroid problems (overactive or underactive), PCOS and idiopathic reasons (unknown cause). Patients use Acupuncture as their main treatment for their infertility problems while others use it in conjunction. Acupuncture increases the feel-good hormones called beta endorphins which improves the levels of follicle-stimulating hormone and luteinizing hormone, which are both very important for fertility and decreases the body’s stress response. Acupuncture treatment reduces stress, increases flow to the reproductive organs and balances the endocrine system, according to several researches. Acupuncture increases flow to the ovaries and uterus, creating a stronger chance for an egg to be nourished and carried to term. Research has also shown that Acupuncture can increase male fertility, which 30% of the time is the cause of couples not being able to conceive. A study published in 2005 in Fertility and Sterility showed Acupuncture can help treat male infertility by increasing the number of normal sperm and decreasing the number of defective sperm.

The goal of an infertility treatment from the Chinese medicine perspective is not just getting pregnant, but to stay pregnant and conceive a healthy baby. Reducing stress in also a key factor in infertility treatments because when men or women are under stress, the hormone cortisol is released in their brain. The change in the brain’s neurochemical balance changes the hormone levels and disrupts the pituitary balance, which is very important to the reproductive cycle. It is very important to see a licensed, fully trained Acupuncture physician for the highest chances of success. Make sure not to use anyone that says they are “certified”, which means 300 hours or less of training and they did not take the National board exam or complete a graduate program.

It’s Their Business

Meet Me at the Corner of Dunkin’ and Delicious

D

unkin’ Donuts is a nationally recognized brand in the quick service restaurant industry, but for Parkland resident and franchisee owner Barry Spiegel there’s a lot more on the menu than just coffee and donuts. The brand has come a long way, now offering a wider range of gourmet beverages and healthier selections. Many items are just under $2 and less than 200 calories, with some drinks coming in under 100 calories. Spiegel realized that Dunkin’ Donuts was on to something. Before opening 12 Dunkin’ Donut stores in Broward County, he wondered what product or service would be the best for the new strip mall he was purchasing. When he did his research, he realized Dunkin’ Donuts was a real winner. It not only offered comfort food fast, but at a very comfortable price point. He saw the future of what the franchise could be. One of their latest stores, which opened in Margate’s Peppertree Plaza, exemplifies that vision. With vibrantly-painted murals on the walls, leatherseated booths, brightly-colored tabletops, modern lighting, flat screen TVs, a drive-thru, an outdoor patio and a conference room, his new location takes Dunkin’ Donuts to the next level. Pushing the envelope is just Spiegel’s style. In fact, when he first wanted to get into the Dunkin’ Donuts game, the corporation seemed hesitant to let him in. After all, there were hundreds of people in line ahead of him. People from up north or who had existing locations in South Florida that wanted to expand, who had the retail experience that Spiegel lacked. Never taking “no” for an answer, Spiegel persevered and convinced them to interview him. His tenacity paid off. His first Coral Springs location opened in 2005 and he has expanded since then with locations in Ft. Lauderdale, Coconut Creek, Tamarac, Plantation, Margate and Lauderhill. “We are growing every year,” says Spiegel. “We are working on three more [locations]. We plan to have 1415 by the end of the year, all in Broward County.” This newest location not only has an updated style, but also has a higher technology quotient with an electronic menu board, flat screen TVs, Wi-Fi and the popular conference room with capability to do a power point presentation. Spiegel also has found the drive-thru to be a popular addition. “Most people still think of us as a donut shop, but we are much more than that. We are fast and convenient. People can grab a sandwich and go. They want something they can hold in their hand while eating in the car on the way to the next appointment or on the way to work.” Their wide range of selections include breakfast and lunch sandwiches which can be made on a bagel, English muffin, croissant, wrap, or flatbread, as well

as oatmeal, bagels, muffins, donuts and donut holes. For hot and cold beverages, they offer everything from coffee, tea and hot chocolate to more gourmet lattes, cappuccinos, espressos and coolattas. Besides offering “fast, friendly service and great food and drinks,” Spiegel has always been focused on giving back to the community. His locations offer 50% off for police and firefighters in uniform and a free donut and 10% off total order for AARP members (55 and up). He has worked with nonprofit organizations, such as Kids of Love, Hopping for a Cure, and Feeding South Florida, that tackle issues like cancer, MS and hunger. In addition, he works with schools, allowing students to do fund-raising car washes at his stores or having proceeds of a day’s sales go back to a school, as well as other events. “We raise $25,000 a year for different schools. Spiegel’s efforts in the community and his business prowess have won him accolades. He was honored as Rookie Business Leader of the Year in 2006 by the Coral Springs Chamber, of which he is an active member. He was also recognized as the 2006 Rising Star of the Year in an international corporate conference held in Las Vegas. That award was based on sales growth, product quality, cleanliness and customer service. Spiegel is not alone in his business venture. His wife, Maxine, joined the company as in-house attorney and Executive Vice President of Human Relations. Their daughter Lauren attended Stoneman Douglas and spent summers working for the company, before moving to New York. Spiegel’s Chief Operating Officer is Buddy Schneiderman. Buddy also resides in Parkland with his wife, Mindy, an interior designer and their two sons, Jed and Tyler, who are students. See for yourself why America Runs on Dunkin’®. Coolest Clothes and Poshest Parties at Party in Pink

N

ancy Lighter and her daughter Jessica love having fun and being creative. “We are creative people. We are very girly girls,” says

Nancy.

The combination of fun and creativity is the idea behind their successful boutique and party place, Party in Pink. They turned a former “Hello Kitty” store into a fabulous and fun clothing store for girls, that is also the poshest place for a party for little ladies that want to be a princess for a day or party it up in their pajamas. “We customize for every party,” says Nancy. “We love buying [clothes, etc] for the store, we love the creative aspect, down to the last detail. We know when you walk into parties, first impressions are everything. We make sure our girls greet everyone.” Girls can sip lemonade from champagne glasses while decorating cookies, getting a mini-mani/pedi or having their hair and make-up done. Others might prefer a Paint Party where they can make necklaces using the “bead bar” or paint their own jewelry box with jewels and glitter. They go home with a rainbow tutu and headband. Younger girls might enjoy a Sweat Pea party where they can play dress up, listen to stories and play games with a princess. And your teen might prefer to just hang out and watch a movie while being pampered and delving into the cupcake and candy bar after the store closes. They even have Karaoke and video games. Kids can have fun making their own lip gloss and body wash. There are so many options that are completely customizable and they have a plethora of special items that you can add on. The birthday girl and her guests will have plenty of photo ops for “selfies” in front of a backdrop, complete with feather boas, light up sunglasses and other fabulous wardrobe items and props.

GIRLY GIRLS Stop by and say hello to Nancy and Jessica Lighter, owners of Party in Pink. Shop for a winning wardrobe for your little diva or have them host a birthday bash that’s the talk of the town. After all, girls just wanna have fun!

Party in Pink also goes on location taking the party to you, with set up and clean-up included. They bring all their fun party props, table settings, food, candy bar, music and even goodie bags. “We always had a hard time finding goodie bags,” says Nancy. “We didn’t like junkie stuff and other things were too expensive. We capitalized on our buying power. We think we have great things for every party.” Due to popular demand, they have monthly themed events that range $20-$50. The last event they scheduled accepted only 20 people and was booked up within 44 minutes. They had to add four more parties, which also sold-out right away.

They also have etiquette classes on Fridays from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. for ages 5 to 7 in which little girls will learn how to make introductions, speak on the phone, set the table and more. It ends with a mother and daughter dance. There is also a class for 8 to 10 year olds from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. where they learn conversation skills, good grooming, table manners and more. Their class ends with a makeover day. Stacy Nelson says her daughter, Jaclyn, 8, who has done some modeling for Party in Pink’s promotional pieces, enjoys attending their events and parties, as well as shopping there. “She loves going there,” says Stacy. “They transform her into a princess. It is a magical place. It is amazing what they can do with hair without being over-the-top.

They make it age appropriate. They have very different boutique clothes for girls that you can’t find in any other stores, and they are reasonably-priced. They also have great parties.” Nancy says they are constantly updating the styles in the stores. They tried a little boys’ section, but there was not enough demand, so they stuck with girls, which suits them fine. They buy new items and it becomes trial and error. If it doesn’t work, the clothes go on sale and new ones come in, allowing plenty of choices for customers. Besides clothes, they have stuffed animals, jewelry and other items.

Party in Pink is located at 4425 Lyons Rd., Suite 102 in the Promenade Shops in Coconut Creek. Find them on Facebook. For more information, call 954-970-8868 or visit partyinpinkboutique.com.

Flood Insurance Affordability Act is Good News for Homeowners

G

ood news for homeowners regarding flood insurance. The US House of Representatives has just passed H.R. 3370, “The Homeowner Flood Insurance Affordability Act.” This bill is expected to go straight to the Senate (versus go to “conference” with the flood bill the US Senate passed previously). If it passes the Senate without amendment it will then go to President Obama for his signature. The NAR (National Association of REALTORS®) supports this legislation. Here is a synopsis of what the House bill accomplishes: •

Reinstates Grandfathering - This bill permanently repeals Section 207 of the Biggert-Waters Act, meaning that grandfathering is reinstated. All post-FIRM properties built to code at the time of construction will have protection from rate spikes due to new mapping – for example, if you built to +2 Base Flood Elevation, you stay at +2, regardless of new maps. Also importantly, the grandfathering stays with the property, not the policy. Caps Annual Rate Increases at 15% – This bill decreases FEMA’s authority to raise premiums. The bill prevents FEMA from increasing premiums within a single property class beyond a 15 percent average a year, with an individual cap of eighteen percent a year. Pre Biggert-Waters, the class average cap was 10%. Currently (Post Biggert-

Waters), the class average cap is 20%. The bill also requires a 5% minimum annual increase on preFIRM primary residence policies that are not at full risk. The updated legislation also states that FEMA shall strive to minimize the number of policies with premium increases that exceed one percent of the total coverage of the policy (e.g., 1% of $250,000 = $2,500).

Funds the Affordability Study and Mandates Completion – This legislation funds the affordability study required by Biggert-Waters and mandates its completion in two years.

Includes the Home Improvement Threshold - This bill returns the “substantial improvement threshold” (i.e. renovations and remodeling) to the historic 50% of a structure’s fair market value level. Under Biggert-Waters, premium increases are triggered when the renovation investments meet 30% of the home’s value. Additional provisions: This legislation includes several other provisions including preserving the basement exception, allowing for payments to be made in monthly installments, and reimbursing policy holders for successful map appeals.

Refunds policyholders who purchased pre-FIRM homes after Biggert-Waters (7/6/12) and were subsequently charged higher rates.

Permanently Removes the Sales Trigger – This bill removes the policy sales trigger, which allows a purchaser to take advantage of a phase in. The new purchaser is treated the same as the current property owner.

Allows for Annual Surcharges - This legislation applies an annual surcharge of $25 for primary residences and $250 for second homes and businesses, until subsidized policies reach full risk rates. All revenue from these assessments would be placed in the NFIP reserve fund, which was established to ensure funds are available for meeting the expected future obligations of the NFIP.

Health & Wellness

BY KENNETH N. WOLINER, M.D., A.B.F.M.

A case of Hair Loss

“People just don’t understand.”Marisa definitely had hair, but

that didn’t stop her from being devastated. “I’m afraid to wash my hair. I’m shedding worse than a German Shepherd in spring [1].” I’ve learned how important it is to listen to all of what my patients’ have to say; and this is especially true when doing consultations about hair loss. After a good five minutes of venting, I was able to start asking some questions. “Anything else?” “Besides my pony tail not being as thick as it used to be? I’m so worried I won’t have any hair left that my stomach is tied up in knots. I wear St. Agnes of Rome around my neck hoping my prayers will be heard soon [2]. Until then, I have to take Pepcid with my coffee.” “Other than prayer, have you tried anything else?” “I’ve seen every type of doctor you can imagine. My primary scolded me for doing the hCG diet and made me start eating again [3]. My GYN said I’m not yet in menopause so she referred me to an Endo. My thyroid tests were ‘in range’ so he sent me to the dermatologist. I’m not a candidate for steroid injections so I then went to the hair transplant surgeon for a consult. I left him with Viviscal vitamins and shampoo, prescriptions for spironolactone, Propecia, and Rogaine, but still, no hair.” “Hmmm …” As Marisa was speaking, I was simultaneously reviewing her old records. “I don’t see where they every checked you for estrogen dominance, thyroid antibodies, insulin resistance, or adrenal fatigue [4].” “Dr. Woliner, that’s why I’m here. You’re known all over the Internet as someone that looks at everything.” “My practice is named ‘Holistic Family Medicine’ because I take a holistic approach. After our 80-minute consultation today, I’ll check for things that weren’t looked at yet to find the cause(s) of your hair loss. Then, we’ll put together a comprehensive plan of behavior changes, diet, exercise, vitamins, OTC meds, and even prescriptions, as necessary.” Marisa came back ten days later to go over her labs. “I have bad news and good news. It’s not just one thing; you have twelve different findings that are abnormal. I break them down into ‘things you’re missing that you need to get’, ‘things you got that you need to get rid of’, and ‘hormone balancing’ [5].” “What’s the good news?” “They’re all treatable! Instead of using the same cookie-cutter approach to everybody, I can tailor my therapies directly to the specific problems you have.” “Like what?” “For starters, you might not be anemic, but you’re really low in iron [6].” “I can’t take iron pills. I’m nauseated already.” “That’s okay; we can give iron to you by injection here in the office. Quite a few of my patients periodically tank up their body’s iron stores that way.” “What else did you find? “When I see a slightly low WBC (white cell) count; that’s a sign of excessive stress [7]. Your coffee isn’t the culprit, but it’s your half-fast way of self-medicating this problem. Herbs and other supplements that support your adrenals are a better answer.” “And you said something about hormones?” “Thyroid hormones (not just T4 but also T3), are necessary to keep your hair in anagen,

or the ‘growing phase’, as well as to keep its coloring [8]. Without thyroid your hair looses its luster and becomes dull, dry, and grey. Your TSH might be normal, but you tested positive for Reverse T3 and Hashimoto’s Thyroiditis, both of which cause thyroid hormone resistance [9].” Over the next 40 minutes, I went over the rest of Marisa’s labs and the game plan to regrow her hair and rejuvenate her body. “You’ll first notice less shedding, but since hair grows only at a rate of one-half inch per month, it might take a year and a half to regain the length you used to have [10].” Six months later, Marisa gave me an update. “Dr. Woliner, my hairdresser thinks St. Agnes answered my prayers, but between you and me, I think you had something to do with it too.” REFERENCES: 1. Nature’s Cure for Arthritis May Have Been Found in the Unlikeliest of Places…. Scientist’s discover hyaluronic acid, a natural joint lubrication compound, in the comb of roosters! Nature has provided the human race with medical break throughs throughout recorded history. One example occurred in 1796 when Edward Jenner developed a method to protect people from smallpox by exposing them to the cowpox virus. In his famous experiment, he rubs pus from the dairymaid’s cowpox pustule into scratches on the arm of his gardener’s 8 year old son, then he exposes him to smallpox six weeks later (which he does not develop). The process becomes known as vaccination from the Latin vacca for cow. Jenner is sometimes called the founding father of immunology. Now, although medicine has come a long way since the eighteenth century modern day scientists are still discovering the powers of nature in the unlikeliest places every day. One current example of this resides in the red crest of the rooster’s comb. You see, this anatomical feature of male chickens is primarily made of naturally occurring substance called hyaluronic acid. Hyaluronic acid is also present in humans, and is a primary ingredient in synovial fluid, the body’s natural joint lubrication. As we age, and under the stress of continued use, the body’s synovial fluid can become depleted, especially in the knees which are the body’s largest weight bearing joint. This can lead to a reduction in joint space resulting in loss of cartilage, swelling, and discomfort, as well as reduced strength and limited range of motion. This process results in a condition known as Osteoarthritis of the knee, sometimes referred to as “wear and tear arthritis”. Until recently, the primary treatments for Osteoarthritis of the knee were limited to physical therapy, knee replacement surgery, or simply learning to live with the pain and frustration of a mobility limited lifestyle. That of course until the rooster came along…. In 1996 scientists successfully extracted,

purified, and concentrated the hyaluronic acid found within the rooster’s comb into a product used for the treatment and relief of knee pain resulting from osteoarthritis known as Hyalgan. This product is now used as an alternative to surgery around the globe and has helped countless individuals regain their mobility and alleviate pain. Locally a group of forward thinking physicians have combined Hyalgan injections performed under visual guidance with unloading knee bracing and specialized physical therapy protocols to deliver highly successful clinical outcomes for their patients. This unique protocol is covered by most major insurance carriers including medicare.

Get Hurricane Ready with Dependable Shutter & Glass

H

urricane season is just around the corner. Now is the time to prepare, says Dependable Shutter & Glass owner Wayne Thompson. Whether you need to install new impact windows and doors or maintain your current hurricane shutters, his top-rated company can help. Thompson and his partner Michael Waters, who opened their business in 2000, have received accolades. Rated A+ with the Better Business Bureau and an A with Angie’s List, they received a Super Service Award in 2013, a feat which only 5 percent of contractors have received in the United States. They also won the Reader’s Choice award for hurricane shutters and glass. They seem to have lived up to their slogan “The Company You Can Depend On.” What makes them unique is not only their winning customer service, and friendly and knowledgeable approach, but their high quality products and years of experience. Before branching off and creating their own company, the duo worked for other installers since the 1980s. They did their apprentices and testing, and received all the needed certifications and licensing required. Now their installers also have their specialty licenses to handle the tri-county area. They can come out and do a free estimate on any job – residential, commercial or industrial, including high rises. People can also come into their showroom and purchase the products to install themselves. They work with top brand names like CGI, PGT and Eastern Architectural. All products come with a warranty. Dependable Shutter & Glass has a variety of windows and doors available, including both impact and non impact. They can even offer a UV coating on the windows, which helps to keep the interior from getting damaged from the sun. By preventing heat from coming in, these windows also help cut down on cooling costs. In addition to protecting from hurricanes, impact windows also prevent intruders from breaking through and help raise the value of your home. It even eliminates outside noise. The benefit of having a professional handle the job is that he not only takes care of the hassle and ensures the product is installed properly, but he also pulls needed permits, works with the home owner’s association, or condo association, and makes sure everything is inspected up to city code. The turn around time varies, but Thompson estimates four to six weeks for an average job. For those who simply need maintenance, they have a plan for that. They work with all makes and models of shutters and will come out and “lubricate the wheels and locks and exercise the shutters” to make sure everything moves smoothly and simply. This is

something Thompson recommends doing once a year. Thompson says he has seen an increase in business and a decrease in prices through the years. “Our business has grown the last few years. Prices for impact resistant windows and doors have come down significantly, compared to when they first came on the market. It is now more affordable,” says Thompson, who reiterates that, in addition to installation, they wholesale and export. Jeannie Camlin found working with Thompson’s company to be a relief. “What a smooth experience we had with Dependable Shutter & Glass,” she says. “We were very stressed at

the thought of putting new windows in the whole house, and they made it very easy!” Russ Adkins adds, “Dependable provided a fair price, installed a quality product and provided an installation team that [kept] me informed throughout their work. Most important, Dependable hit every deadline and did everything they said they would do. This is the sort of company with whom you want to do business.” When Hurricane Season hits June 1, will you be ready? The first step is making sure your house is secured. To ensure a quicker turn around time and get everything done, Thompson suggests calling now rather than waiting until the season begins. Dependable Shutter & Glass is located at 4741 Orange Dr. in Davie. Call 888-694-6698 or visit DependableShutter.com to find out more or request a needs assessment.

Proceeds from the festival benefit the Coral Springs Museum of Art and other non-profit qualifying artistic endeavors within the community. he popular real estate website, Movoto.com, has named the City of Nando y Su Banda Parkland as the Safest City In Florida. Movoto utilized the FBI’s report of crime statistics of cities and towns with populations of 5,000 or more. Each location was then looked at in terms of three criteria; property crime, violent crime and the chance a resident will be a victim of crime. Out of more than 200 Florida municipalities, the City of Parkland was ranked number one for not only the lowest chance of crime for residents, but number one in their study overall.

A Small Hospital Community With Big Hospital Standards

If you own a purebred animal, you might want to ask the provider about breed restrictions as certain conditions may not be covered in certain breeds. Lastly, ask the provider whether or not the deductible (if you elect to have one) applies per condition or per year. Why is this important? Let’s say Garfield develops diabetes. This is a lifelong illness that can be quite expensive to manage. Would you prefer to pay the $1000 deductible once at the beginning of the illness and be done (for the life of the condition), or would you prefer to pay that $1000 deductible every year? Seems obvious, right? Well, it’s not so easy. Let’s say Killer got into the garbage and develops pancreatitis. You have a $1000 deductible, which you cover, and then 6 months later he breaks a leg. On a per condition basis you now have to cover that $1000 deductible again, whereas on a per year basis you already have that covered. It is a tough decision, but can be a very important one.

Like any other insurance, there are several providers available. Despite this, many Americans are still not aware of the availability of pet insurance. In fact, data shows that only 1% of American pet owners have active coverage, compared to over 25% in the UK. When looking into which plan might be best for your family, there are a few things to consider. The first is which provider is best. This answer is going to be different for each family depending on what the specific household needs are. The first place to start is to ask your veterinarian. I recommend Trupanion since our hospital, and many others in the area, work closely with them. Also, they offer an option to pay the hospital directly, if the hospital is enrolled in this service. This is important because let’s say you don’t have the $2500 in the bank to pay your veterinarian, (or the emergency veterinarian), the insurance company may pay the hospital directly. Any insurance you investigate, you definitely want to ask the provider if this option exists. Many do not offer it, and a few actually discourage it.

For more information, or to schedule an appointment, Dr. Kelly Saporito can be reached at 954-698-6722. Coco-Park Animal Hospital is located at the border of Coconut Creek and Parkland at 6730 N State Road 7, just past the TD Bank on the north east corner of Johnson and 441. Visit www.Coco-park.com

et’s face it. Veterinary care can be expensive. Let’s also face that we love our dogs and cats. Some of us love them more than our kids or other family members. The unconditional love our pets provide is priceless. Unfortunately, sometimes the vet bills might seem that way too. One option to handle this is one you might not be aware of - pet insurance.

Insurance can definitely be complicated, but it can also mean being able to provide the very best care for your furry loved one without having to suffer as much of the financial angst that can follow. Get educated and investigate a few options. It may not be right for your family, but if it is, you don’t want to wait until it’s too late. Once the problem happens, it won’t be covered.

MAKING SPORT PARTICIPATION SAFE Concussion. What was once a word mostly associated with professional athletes has now become a worry for parents of athletes of all ages. While a standard sports physical is required by nearly all school and youth sports leagues, this will not provide doctors with important information about a child’s cognitive abilities should a concussion occur. A baseline concussion test will provide physicians valuable clinical information to use if a child suffers a concussion. A complete history and physical along with the baseline concussion test is the best way to protect a young athlete’s safety. For the health and well-being of our community’s student athletes, Broward Health Urgent Care is offering the following exams at all three urgent care centers:

Sports Physical & EKG $65 • Baseline Concussion Testing $15 Total: $80

Ages 10-18 years. By appointment only. Insurance does not cover these exams. Payment will be due at the time of the appointment.

In a New York Minute

T

here is no place like it and it’s never the same place twice! The Big Apple. The City that Never Sleeps. New York City is an amazing destination with so much to see and so much to do. A New York Minute references the hectic, frenzied pace of life in New York. Johnny Carson once said, “It’s the interval between a Manhattan traffi c light turning green and the guy behind you honking his horn.” I was born in Queens, but my family left New York when I was just four, leaving behind the harsh winters for the warmer climate of South Florida. And while I’ve gone back to visit and we’ve taken our three children there, it’s hard to imagine living the New York Minute lifestyle, especially with a family. I give credit to those that do - they are a special group of people that embody a spirit like no other. New Yorkers are passionate, friendly and interesting.

If you fi nd yourself planning a visit - one of the best ways to take in the sights is with New York CityPASS®, a ticket booklet that gives you admission into fi ve fabulous attractions: the Empire State Building Observatory, American Museum of Natural History, The Metropolitan Museum of Art, The Museum of Modern Art (MoMa), Top of the Rock or the Guggenheim Museum, and Statue of Liberty/Ellis Island or Circle Line Cruises. To get your tickets, visit www.CityPass.com OTHER MUST-SEE AND MUST-DO ATTRACTIONS

gets rid of this tradition). Join the madness at the Dominique Ansel Bakery, and stand in line for their famous Cronut ® (croissant doughnut) or their latest craze, the Chocolate Chip Cookie Milk Shot - a shot glass shaped chocolate chip cookie served warm with milk - worth waiting for (warning: the lines can be long and they often sell out). Ride the subway and walk through Grand Central Station. Visit the 9/11 Memorial and admire the tallest skyscraper in the Western hemisphere and the third-tallest building in the world, One World Trade Center, standing 1776 feet tall.

See a Broadway show! Trending now: Cinderella starring the Nanny sitcom, Fran Drescher and pop star princess Carly Rae Jepsen. Ice skate at Rockerfeller Center. Take a horse and carriage ride around Central Park (before Mayor Bill de Blasio

These are just a few suggestions, but “wait, wait... there’s more!” It’s impossible to do it all in one trip, as there are myriad things to do in New York. Given the chance to take a bite out of the Big Apple, you will see that it is truly a delicious destination.

Legally Speaking

BY OMAR J. ARCIA, ESQ. FORECLOSURE DEFENSE AND BANKRUPTCY PROTECTION ATTORNEY

How to Combat Light Speed Foreclosures

S

ince June 2013 when the Florida legislature approved additional funding to clear the huge backlog of residential foreclosures, major changes have occurred to the time in which foreclosure c ases are brought to trial. Previously it would take any where bet ween eighteen months to t wo years before a foreclosure case was completed. Today, most foreclosure cases are set for trial or f inal judgment within 6 - 8 months. The goal is to erase the statewide foreclosure backlog by 2016. Based on these state time limits, it may appear that judges in South Florida are more concerned with eliminating the backlog than with dispensing justice. If you are in foreclosure or at risk of foreclosure how c an you c ombat against “light speed” fore - closures? The most impor tant tool you can use to defend against our cour ts’ quest to drain the dockets is to hire a qualif ied and experienced foreclosure defense at torney to guide you through the minef ield of valid de -fenses to a foreclosure action. First, don’t set tle for any thing less than an initial face -to -face meeting with the at torney. Let ’s face it, if they are too busy to meet with you personally to review your case, they will just be “ too busy ” to actually help you with your case. Also, make sure that the at torney has plent y of liti - gation and trial experience (at least 15 years), and that the at torney regularly practices in the count y where your case is pending. Finally, make sure the at torney has a proven track record of outstanding re - sults and satisf ied clients. Ask the at torney to refer you to at least three satisf ied clients. If they refuse to provide you this information, thank the at torney for her time, don’t waste another minute of your time, and leave the of f ice. Another critic al tool to defend against “light speed” foreclosures is to ensure that the law f irm you hire to defend your case has established loan modif ic ation and consumer bankruptcy depar tments. This will give you the ver y best oppor tunit y to save your home. If your legal defenses to the foreclosure c ase are not accepted by the cour t, you can process a loan modif ic ation, reinstatement, or shor t payof f of your loan. If all else fails, right before the foreclosure auction of your home takes place, you c an f ile a consumer bank- ruptcy and at tempt to complete the modif ic ation within the bankruptcy proceeding.

The attorneys at the Arcia Law Firm have more than 40 years combined litigation and trial experi-ence, and we are privileged to successfully represent hundreds of homeowners in our community. We have foreclosure defense, loan modification and bankruptcy departments all in the same of-fice. We will gladly refer you to our satisfied clients so you can be confident in your decision to hire our Firm. If you are struggling to make your monthly mortgage payments, if you are in the middle of a frustrating loan modification process, or if you just received a foreclosure summons, contact the Arcia Law Firm today at 954-437-9066 to schedule a free personal consultation with an attorney (not a paralegal or assistant), or visit www.arcialawfirm.com to schedule your appoint-ment online. Detailed explanations of different options available to homeowners are also discussed in a new DVD developed by the Arcia Law Firm entitled “Fight For Your Home.” If you mention that you heard about the DVD through this magazine, you will receive a complimentary copy during your free consultation to discuss your case in detail with a member of our highly experienced and determined legal team.

Teen Time

Teen Political Forum

T

he 7th Annual Teen Political Forum will be hosted by the City of Coral Springs on Thursday, April 24, 2014. The event, which is open to local high school students, will be held at the Center for the Arts from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. The purpose of this Forum is to have city and county elected officials enlighten students with their personal experiences as elected officials and address teen issues of interest, concluding with a Q & A from the student audience. This is a great opportunity for students to talk directly to their elected officials on topics that are significant to them. The event is open to all high school students who live in Coral Springs or who attend our local high schools: Coral Springs High, Marjory Stoneman Douglas High, Coral Glades High, Coral Springs Charter, J. P. Taravella High and Coral Springs Christian Academy. Students may receive service hours for attending the Forum. Students who are home-schooled or attend private schools and live in Coral Springs are also welcome. To view last year’s video, visit www.CoralSprings.org/teenpoliticalforum. For further information, please call 954-344-1005. The Center for the Arts is located at 2855 Coral Springs Drive, Coral Springs.

Dining Out

BY RACHEL GALVIN

El Mariachi - A Taste of Tradition F or over 20 years, El Mariachi has been providing a taste of tradition with its Latin flavor and flair. They have shifted their main location a few times but settled two years ago into their new location in the Coral Palm Plaza at 2153 N. University Dr. in Coral Springs. They also have another locale in the Pine Ridge Plaza (4625 University Dr.) No matter where they move, they have kept with them the same consistent taste, something owner Marco Molano prides himself on. He operates El Mariachi with his wife and children. General Manager Jorge Correa can see the difference between their restaurants and other establishments. “It comes down to the quality of food; the locations are beautiful, plus the great service … and entertainment, too,” says Correa. Robert Traistaru, marketing director, adds, “The flavors are pretty unique. It is a special authentic flavor you don’t get anywhere else. Marco tastes everything and trains all the chefs and kitchen staff for a very long time. The salsa you had two years ago and two weeks ago will be the same.” El Mariachi is known for its Mexican food, but also serves Cuban specialties. Traistaru says, “They are both excellent ... I am saying that not because I work here, but because I eat here.” Here you can get everything from fajitas and enchiladas to churrasco steak, seafood, salads or even juicy thick burgers. A good start is their excellent Margarita. Tasty without being overwhelmed by alcohol, it is a good way to wet your whistle before diving into any of their choices. They have plenty of types to choose from, and have a full bar available. Sangria is also popular. They have daily Happy Hour from opening to 7 p.m., with $4 on house margaritas, well drinks and house wines, and $3 on draft beer. In the future, they may do half-price appetizers. Their chips and hand-chopped salsa (made every two to three hours) come to the table first and can be followed by an appetizer like empanadas or quesadillas. Everything is freshly made. The menu boasts a variety of entrees, such as chicken enchiladas, filled with pulled chicken and topped with cheese, served with refried beans, sour cream, pico de gallo and yellow rice. The fish fajitas (made with tilapia, but you can have grouper if you ask) or shrimp fajitas are another great choice. This selection comes to the table sizzling and the fish is topped with red and green peppers, and onions. It is paired with flour tortillas and a mix of guacamole, pico de gallo, shredded cheese and sour cream for toppings. Wrap it up all together for the best flavor. Other popular dishes, says Traistaru, include Tampiquena Steak - a top of the line skirt steak with enchilada, refried beans, yellow rice and sour cream, Pargo Rojo (Red Snapper) finished with wine, garlic

AUTHENTIC MEXICAN FOOD Relax and enjoy a Margarita with chips and fresh salsa. Try the chicken enchiladas with refried beans and yellow rice, or a fish or shrimp fajita with all the toppings. For dessert, the caramel flan is fantastic!

and lemon butter, and Lechon Asado, tender cooked pork marinated with 110 ingredients, topped with onions. Their dishes are 99 percent mild, but there are a few spicy items. A children’s menu and daily lunch specials are also available. Be sure to save room for dessert! The lightly fried vanilla ice cream combines creaminess with a crunchy shell. It is prepared by being stored extremely cold in the freezer and then covered in cornflakes and flash fried. They top it with chocolate, whipped cream and a cherry and present it on drizzles of chocolate and caramel. Another great choice is the tres leches, homemade by the same woman for over 20 years. This moist cake is marinated in three milks: regular, condensed and evaporated. The topping is made with corn syrup and powdered sugar, and is topped off with a cherry. Cuatro leches (made with four milks) is also available. For a really rich choice, try the caramel flan.

“I am very proud of my food,” said Molano, who strives for the best quality. El Mariachi is a great venue for special occasions, large parties and business meetings. They have a party room that can accommodate about 30 people. A Mariachi band entertains on Friday nights from 8 p.m. to 9 p.m., while live entertainment outside on the patio takes place Fridays and Saturdays, from 7 p.m. to 11 p.m. On Cinco de Mayo (May 5), the 5300 square feet restaurant is packed. Besides a special menu, they will have drink and dinner specials, and give out T-shirts, which people often collect. There will be giveaways all day long. To find out more, visit www.elmariachimexican. com or call 954-688-7505 for the Coral Palm Plaza location or 954-796-9285 for the Pine Ridge Plaza location.
