Lucy & Jerry

I want to shout it out to all our readers and advertisers 2017 is here and with the new year, lots of positive changes on so many levels. With our first full year publishing our magazines behind us, we feel very comfortable that we are now publishing the best community magazines in South Florida. We hope you have noticed that we have been improving the appearance and the content of our magazines with every passing month. Our 3 local magazines are mailed to over 66,000 homes and

businesses in our area. (We are in a very small minority of magazines that provide proof of mailings upon request). Starting fresh for 2017, our magazines will have an improved exterior appearance along with exciting new content and special sections. Our 2016 Halloween PET COSTUME CONTEST was such a big hit, we have again, included it in the Pet Section for January. New sections will include a PERSONAL TOUCH PHOTO area where we will display local events; charity events, grand openings, chamber events, holiday pics, locals and other photos sent in by you. Our Print/Social Media package (only $75/mo./mag) is good to go along with our Charity Sponsorships. Being THE Community magazine, we will educate, entertain and inform the local community about events that have passed or will be happening in the upcoming months. Beginning with our February,2017 issues, we will be increasing our distribution to over 71,000 monthly magazines by having over 5,000, copies of our magazines available for local pick up. We will list the local addresses where our

COMMUNITY NEWS

Happy New Year! I’m looking forward to what 2017 has in store for our wonderful City. I hope you and your family had a wonderful holiday season. The City ended 2016 on a great note. We were pleased to once again have the City’s AAA credit rating affirmed by Fitch Ratings and Standard & Poor’s agency. This rating is the highest bond rating an organization can earn. As a AAA rated City, the City of Coral Springs has saved, and will continue to save, millions of dollars in interest and credit enhancements such as bond insurance. This credit rating confirms our stable financial position, and that has a tremendous fiscal impact for our residents. With the start of a new year, we also have lots of exciting events to look forward to. Each January, we honor the life of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Don’t miss “I Have a Dream” - a special performance reflecting the life and words of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. It will be held on Friday, January 13 at the Center for the Arts at 7 p.m. Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for children. Tickets are now available at the Center for the Arts, City Hall and City Hall in the Mall. I hope you will join us for this momentous occasion.

“I know of no single formula for success. But over the years I have observed that some attributes of leadership are universal and are often about finding ways of encouraging people to combine their efforts, their talents, their insights, their enthusiasm and their inspiration to work together.” -Queen Elizabeth II

“Perseverance is failing 19 times and succeeding the 20th.” -Julie Andrews “A pessimist is one who makes difficulties of his opportunities and an optimist is one who makes opportunities of his difficulties.”

This is a free, open play event, so registration is not necessary. Coral Glades is located within the Sportsplex at 2700 Sportsplex Drive. Hope to see you there! Then, on Saturday, February 4, we’re hosting a Family Fun Day and Car Show at the Sportsplex from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. There will be music, food trucks, vendors, bounce houses and entertainment. There will be a nominal fee for some of the activities. Cost to pre-register a vehicle is $15 or $20 on the day of the event. All vehicles, including trucks and motorcycles are welcome to register. FINANCIAL / TAX ADVICE LEGALLY SPEAKING RoBERt SpIELmaN, Cpa, JD BYLINE HERE

ta x a n d a dv i s o r y s e r v i c e s

Hurricane Preparedness And Document Retention In an earlier column, I addressed how long each of us should keep our personal records. Assembling your personal records in a location and format protected from hurricane and disasters is also paramount. Hurricane preparedness can be quickly summarized in the following steps: 1. Determine your risk. 2. Develop your personalized evacuation plan. 3. Make sure your insurance coverage is up to date. 4. Assemble all disaster supplies. 5. Reinforce your home and business. 6. Identify and protect your trusted sources of information. 7. Create a written plan for you and your family. The essential records to be safeguarded in the event of an actual disaster are by their nature limited in volume and must be the key items you need in the event you are adversely affected. While tax papers are important, they are generally not the first items to be safeguarded. Certain documents should be retained in a safe deposit box yet be available if they are immediately required. The following are just suggestions, and may not be inclusive, of everything you might personally need to retain: Items to be retained in a safe deposit box: Adoption papers, birth certificates, certificates of citizenship, death certificates, copy of driver’s licenses and family history, fingerprints of young children, marriage certificates, copy of passport, religious papers, social security card, and voter’s registration. Original wills, trusts, life insurance policies, property insurance and casualty insurance policies, inventory of household goods, titles to automobiles, plus important business and personal contracts. Documents to be kept in a portable disaster proof firebox:

insurance policies, important personal and business contacts, medical related papers and prescriptions, automobile registrations, copy of credit cards, bank documents, brokerage accounts, one year’s tax returns, medical information and insurance cards, school information for children, government benefits including Social Security card and benefit statements. The key concept is that documents retained in a home office are not safe in the event of disaster. They are often not readily available when needed. Documents absolutely essential in the event of an actual disaster should be placed in a safe deposit box. Those documents you might need to work your way through a natural disaster, or to help your family, should be retained in a portable protected firebox. You should also have an adequate amount of cash for your expected needs for at least two (2) weeks, multiple credit cards, and checks from bank accounts funded to see you through an extended natural disaster. Plan ahead by thinking what documents you will need if you were displaced from your residence for an extended period of time. It is always easier to make copies of important documents, rather than having to reconstruct them by remembering who might have copies or trying to remember who your professional service advisors were when certain documents were prepared. Consult your legal and tax advisor to determine which documents can be retained by copy and which must be original. Electronic backups are always an excellent strategy. This article provides generalized tax and financial information for educational purposes only. It does not provide any personalized tax, investment, legal, or other business or professional advice. Before taking any action with respect to the matters addressed, you should seek assistance of a professional who is familiar with your particular situation. Family COMMUNITY Features NEWS

Overcoming the Opioid Epidemic America is in the midst of an ongoing opioid epidemic affecting families across the country. Reports show that there are almost 80 opioid-related overdoses a day, amounting to more than 28,000 deaths annually. This figure continues to climb as over 2.1 million people in the United States suffer from substance use disorders related to prescription opioid pain relievers, according to the National Institute on Drug Abuse. Additionally, the rise of synthetic opioids like fentanyl, W-18 and carfentanil are threats to those already using opiates as the epidemic worsens.

Where do opioid overdoses occur? Data from the Centers for Disease Control shows that 77 percent of opioid overdose related deaths occur outside of a medical setting and 56 percent occur in private homes, meaning family or friends must often be the first to take action in an emergency situation. Accordingly, it is increasingly important that responders understand how to prevent death from overdose, including knowing how to use naloxone, the opioid overdose reversal medication.

10

JANUARY 2017

What does naloxone do? Naloxone, the antidote that reverses an opioid overdose, works by neutralizing the opioid receptors in the brain, allowing an overdosed person to breathe again moments after it is administered. It’s been used in ambulances and hospital settings for decades and is now available for people to use in their homes or other remote areas. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, more than 10,000 reversals of overdoses with naloxone are conducted by non-medical bystanders. Without having a solution in the hands of those closest to opioid-related overdoses, lives are left hanging in the balance while waiting for emergency medical services. However, there is an FDA-approved naloxone nasal spray designed for use by laypeople, like friends and family, who are not medically trained. It’s needle-free and requires no training or assembly to use while providing a strong enough dose to help reverse opioid-related overdoses. Naloxone is only effective in opioid-related overdoses and does not affect a person without opioids in their body.

To coNTAcT ciTY News, cAll lUcY (ediToR) AT 954-255-5226

What can you do? A majority of states have issued standing orders for FDA-approved naloxone products, which permit pharmacies to dispense the nasal spray without a physician’s prescription. If you or someone you know is susceptible to an opioid-related overdose, whether caused by illicit drugs, like heroin, or prescription painkillers, it is important to prepare for an emergency overdose situation. By having naloxone on hand, you can save a life when every second matters.

Learn more about naloxone at getnaloxonenow.org.

Lose Weight With Acupuncture And Oriental Medicine In 2030, approximately 42% of Americans will be considered obese. This is a scary prediction! It’s a staggering fact that today as many as a quarter of all Americans are overweight. In their struggle to lose excess pounds, Americans spend over 33 billion dollars every year on weight loss programs. Unfortunately, almost 95% fail in their attempt to lose the weight they need to maintain good health. Fortunately, Acupuncture can help you not only lose weight but maintain your health! In the May 2012 publication of Obesity Reviews, a team of researchers performed a detailed review of studies looking at Acupuncture and obesity. When compared to no treatment and pharmaceutical medications, the Acupuncture studies showed: greater weight loss, decreased BMI, decreased weight circumference. Acupuncture involves the insertion of very fine, sterile needles at specific body points that creates a calming, relaxing effect, which counteracts the need for excessive eating caused by stress, frustration or anxiety. Acupuncture can power up weight control strategy by curbing appetite, quelling cravings, boosting metabolism, improving digestion, regulating obesityrelated hormones and enhancing the way nutrients are used. Scientists have provided explanations on HOW Acupuncture promotes weight loss: • Release of Endorphins: Acupuncture needles inserted in specific points on the body and in the ear will release endorphins which have a calming and relaxing effect • Increases metabolism: Auricular (ear) acupuncture temporarily increase basal metabolic rate and suppresses appetite due to the effects on the autonomic nervous system. • Improves insulin resistance: Acupuncture alters activity of the sympathetic nervous system and possibly correcting the insulin signal defect. • Decreases abdominal fat: An MRI study shows a decreased in abdominal fat storage after acupuncture treatments.

12

JANUARY 2017

To coNTAcT ciTY News, cAll lUcY (ediToR) AT 954-255-5226

• Appetite suppression: Acupuncture influences the hypothalamus and obesityrelated hormones to promote appetite suppression. There are many reasons people become overweight such as: hormone imbalances, slowed metabolism, overeating, poor nutrition and lack of exercise. Using Acupuncture to tackle weight loss is a multi-pronged approach. In order for an Acupuncture physician to choose the correct points for you, you must first come in and on your first treatment we will discuss your particular pattern of overeating, digestive problems, hormonal issues or anything that has been causing you difficulties in losing weight. Every patient is different and understanding the main causes of the person’s excess weight is fundamental since it can be merely behavioral or it could be physiological. The number of Acupuncture treatments necessary depends on the patient’s goals for losing weight, the speed in which they want to lose it. A benefit of Acupuncture weight loss treatments is that unlike medications, there are no harmful side effects and no chance for addiction.

Tips for using Acupuncture for weight loss: • Choose a qualified, licensed Acupuncture physician. • Complete a full course of treatment and you should follow a comprehensive weight loss plan. Treatments are normally 2 to 3 times per week for 4 to 6 weeks depending on patient’s goals. Monique Bain, L.Ac, Dipl.Ac. graduated from the Academy of Five Element Acupuncture in Gainesville, with her degree in Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine, and is Nationally Board Certified in Acupuncture. Elijah Word, Broward actor/singer/dancer By Dale King

A local singer, dancer and actor is angling to make the jump from Broward to Broadway. That performer, Elijah Word, isn’t complaining, though. He spent most of 2016 parlaying his talents across a variety of South Florida stages, picking up some respectable reviews and plenty of positive audience recognition. He hopes to replicate his success in New York, where he has studied performing arts and already plied his trade in several off-Broadway venues. But first, he has to finish his work locally – and he’s booked at least through April. Word, a 23-year-old Fort Lauderdale native, grew up in Parkland, graduated from Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School there and attended the American Music and Dramatic Arts Academy (AMDA) in the Big Apple. He lives in Coral Springs when he’s around town, and stays with family in New York when working in the big city. “I’ve always been a singer, since I was about 3,” said Word, the lanky, 6-foot-3 performer who often towers over his cast mates on stage. As a high school sophomore, “my drama teacher saw me singing and said, ‘You have to audition for the drama class.’ I ended up doing Pippin, and I fell in love with theater right there.” Pippin is a musical that uses the premise of a mysterious performance troupe led by a Leading Player to tell the story of Pippin, a young prince. Ben Vereen won a Tony for his lead role in the original Broadway production – and Word said he once had a funky run-in with the famed performer. “I saw Ben Vereen in New York, walking in to see Cat on a Hot Tin Roof. He was wearing a top hat and a cool, velvet blazer. I made eye contact with him, and I blurted out, ‘You’re the reason I do theater, you’re amazing, oh, my God!” Word first showed his face – and his abilities – on the South Florida theater scene a few years ago in Sounds of Simon, a collection of Paul Simon tunes performed by an assortment of ragtag street folks. Producer Gary Waldman, impressed by Word’s singing as well as dancing skills, moved him to a lead role. Eventually, Word performed off-Broadway in a Waldman show that quickly closed. Since returning, Word’s career has begun to sizzle. This past year, he appeared in Hair at the Kravis Center; Evita, The Soul of Motor City and Swing, Swing, Swing at Broward Stage Door Theater and, in December, he portrayed TJ, an oddball character in Sister Act at the Wick Theatre in Boca Raton. Reviewer Christine Dolan called Word’s depiction of TJ

“a breakout performance for the actor, who moves like Gumby-meets-Michael Jackson and mines every moment to maximum comic effect.”

Elijah Word

The description elicited a satisfying laugh from Word, a self-described extrovert and “goofball” who occasionally lapses into seriousness between long stretches of silliness. “I got it from my mom,” Symone Hylton, a hairdresser and cosmetologist who, her son notes with pride, “is a hard worker.” He gets a lot of feedback from his mother as well as others in his family. Coincidentally, Word is virtually the only one with a knack for theater. “The rest are athletes. My sisters are cheerleaders, my older sister is a cheerleader coach. My cousin plays football and baseball. We are all really tall.”

He admits that showing up in Hair at Kravis gained him some notoriety. One role that forced him to stretch his skill was in The Life, a sordid musical tale about the hookers who prowled Times Square circa 1980. “It was tough. I was just a baby, about 20. It was the first time I ever had to play a bad guy. I had to play a sleazy kind of guy. My mom came to see it, and her jaw dropped.” Oddly enough, “a lot of the people in the cast were my close friends.”

And still are. Andre Russell, who played Fleetwood in The Life, was in Sister Act. Don Seward and Leah Sessa, other actors Word met along the way, were also part of the justconcluded show at Wick. With the new year here, Word is contracted for a couple of shows at Slow Burn Theatre – Xanadu and Big River. “After that, I may go back to New York.” But the Kravis Center is conducting auditions for several musicals. And he has noticed.

Still, Word longs to be on Broadway, perhaps even as the lead in Pippin – or Aaron Burr in Hamilton. “It’s a goal….. it’s a goal. I’ve shaken hands and bumped elbows with a lot of people up there. And movies, too, I won’t shut that out. I’ll go to L.A. I have a lot of friends there, too.” The north Broward actor said he has a favorite quote: “The job of an actor is to display life to life.” “I took that quote and ran with it,” he says. “There are so many layers of life we get to discover.”

City Commission Approves Senior Living Facility National Chain will Expand Living Options for Parkland At its meeting Wednesday evening, the City of Parkland (City) City Commission voted unanimously to approve plans for Allegro Management Company to build a senior living facility on Loxahatchee Road immediately west of the parcel that fronts U.S. 441/State Road 7. The parcel that fronts U.S. 441/State Road 7 on the northwest corner of the intersection with Loxahatchee Road has already been prepared for construction of a Wawa convenience store. Construction of Wawa is expected to begin in Spring 2017 and construction of the Allegro senior living facility is expected to begin before the end of 2017. Key to construction of both properties are conditions to minimize traffic obstruction during the construction process—particularly during rush hours. Additionally, the external appearances of the buildings will be consistent with Parkland’s existing commercial development which incorporates stone and wood. Allegro Management Company is based in St. Louis, Missouri and currently has nine senior living facilities in Florida, the nearest one being in Boynton Beach. Allegro will provide upscale independent living, assisted living, and memory care in the Parkland facility which will be approximately 167 units. The City of Parkland, Florida has a population of approximately 30,000 and is located in northwest Broward County. Established in 1963, the City grew from humble beginnings, remains environmentally proud, and is home to nine parks and five public schools. The City was named the best City in Florida in which to raise a family by WalletHub and is the 13th safest city in America for 2016 according to NeighborhoodScout. From 621 Pounds of Food in Parkland to 8,000 Meals City Food Drive and Volunteers Make a Difference The City of Parkland (City) held its annual holiday food drive and collected 621 pounds of non-perishable food, much of which was donated by Parkland residents, and provided it to Feeding South Florida on Saturday, December 3rd when 19 City volunteers pitched in to prepare approximately 8,000 meals in a three-hour shift. Volunteers met early at Parkland City Hall Saturday morning and traveled by bus to Feeding South Florida in Pembroke Park. There they received orientation and training on how to inspect donated items for sorting. While 621 pounds of food was donated by Parkland, the volunteers assisted in sorting more than 10,400 pounds of food. In addition, the volunteers assisted in the preparation of approximately 8,000 meals for those in need— all in a three-hour shift. Feeding South Florida is the leading domestic hunger-relief organization in South Florida and the only Feeding America food bank serving Broward, Palm Beach, Miami-Dade, and Monroe counties. The City of Parkland, Florida has a population of approximately 30,000 and is located in northwest Broward County. City of Parkland Launches Website Redesign New Look Parallels New City Commission’s Forward Movement The City of Parkland (City) launched a newly designed website (www.cityofparkland.org) late yesterday that dramatically upgrades the City’s online appearance and customer service. The new design has both the look and feel of the City that is the self-proclaimed “great northwest of Broward County.” “The look of the new site is the most obvious enhancement,” said Ned Franklin, IT Manager for the City, “but the functionality and user-friendly navigation on computers and mobile devices alike is a sizable leap forward for us.” “These improvements are driven by our Commission’s desire to provide resources and service to our residents and we feel like we’ve taken a big step in that direction” he said. The redesign was done by Manhattan, Kansas-based CivicPlus. Features on Parkland’s new website include quick access to interactive City maps, fully ADA-compliant features, and large backdrop images that fit the look and feel of the City showcasing stone, foliage, water, and neatly-manicured landscapes. These images will continue to be rotated through the site to provide an aesthetically-pleasing backdrop to improved site navigation and enhanced information. CivicPlus is universally known for its expertise in municipal websites and provides the same service to cities such as Anaheim, California; Irving, Texas; Eugene, Oregon; Pueblo, Colorado; Bismarck, North Dakota; San Jose, California; and Banff, Alberta, Canada among many others. While City officials acknowledge the site will continue to be streamlined, improved, and enhanced moving forward, the new website projects an image consistent with Parkland’s hometown feel. Your mortgage is paid – Once your mortgage is paid off in full, every dollar you earn over what you paid for it is pure profit. Very few people in this country today get to enjoy the great feeling of being debt free, but if you sell your home after it is paid off and pocket the profits, you can be one of them.

WHEN IT IS THE RIGHT TIME TO SELL YOUR HOME If you are like so many homeowners today, you are not living in your “forever home” right at the moment. Rather, the home you currently reside in is a stepping stone to get you that much closer to your dream house. It is likely you are always keeping one eye on your home and the other eye on the

Your current interest rate is high – Right now, interest rates on mortgage loans are at historic lows. If you are currently carrying a mortgage on a home that has a high interest rate attached (and especially if a refinance won’t fix this adequately), then now is a good time to sell.

housing market, trying to figure out when the time is ripe to sell and move to the next home. Here’s how to know for sure when it is a good time to sell your home. When your current home is no longer a good fit for your needs – Stepping stone homes are bought for a specific reason at a specific time in life. Maybe you moved because you are expecting a baby and needed more room. Conversely, maybe your “baby” just went off to college and suddenly your formerly cozy home feels

like an echoing cavern. Perhaps you just got a job on the other side of town and the commute is killing you, or now you work from home and you discover you hate your neighborhood. Regardless of why, when your home no longer works for your situation in life, this is a clear sign it is a good time to think about selling.

At this point in time, real estate is scarce and homes are in demand. Interest rates are low and the market is strong overall. Whether you choose to sell and just rent for a while or you decide to turn around and buy another home at a low interest rate, it is a win-win to sell and get out of that higher rate.

When the market favors the seller – If there is one thing you can count on the real estate market to reliably deliver, it is shifting trends. Some years, it will be a buyer’s market and in other years, it will be a seller’s market.

Every single day, homeowners become former homeowners for all kinds of different reasons. There are no invalid reasons to sell your home; there are only the reasons why now is the right time for you.

CHOOSING THE RIGHT THERAPIST IS AN IMPORTANT DECISION Individual, Couple and Family Therapy Relationship Issues: Communication, Trust and Infidelity, Intimacy Separation / Divorce/ Blended Family Adjustment Parenting Issues/Teenage Challenges Life Transitions/Grief and Loss Co-Parenting Coaching

Dear Debbie and Karen, As I was putting away the holiday decorations, I decided to write to you and say thank you for helping my family last year. I won’t mention their names but my daughter and husband came to you for counseling during their divorce and both took your parenting class .I have three grandchildren ages 19, 16 and 10. My sonin-law cheated and my daughter refused to give him another chance because he had cheated before. I understood, but it was hard for my three grandchildren always being put in the middle and hearing fighting all the time. The oldest was in his first year of college and almost came home. The 16 year old’s grades dropped and the youngest had developed stomach problems. All I could do was watch and try to be supportive. For months, my daughter and son-in-law went out of their way to destroy each other. Then they came to you and I noticed that they began to talk to each other differently. They stopped trying to hurt each other and started to act like parents again. In any event, that was last Christmas and what a difference a year makes! The family won’t be the way it was, but all three kids are back on track and I think everyone has peace this year. I am so grateful I had to write and thank you.

Dear Grateful Grandma.,

- Grateful Grandma

You are most welcome! Your letter reflects our most important goal, which is to help our clients and their family’s find peace in a way that is important for them. Every family and every situation is unique and there is no cookie cutter way to approach therapy. What we do is listen to our clients and help them through their pain and fear. While some clients choose to work on reconciliation, sometimes, as with your family, they want to find a way to co-exist and if there are children, to co-parent. Many clients come to us thinking their situation is hopeless and they are helpless to do anything about it. Perhaps your letter will touch a reader who may need to hear your story to find the courage to seek out therapy, support and or education. Wishing you and all our readers a new year filled with joy, health and happiness.

LEGALLY SPEAKING BY ALAN J. REINDFELD, ESQ

Think about Estate Planning for Your New Year’s Resolution The New Year is a chance to reflect on the past and to make changes to the future. What better way than preparing your family for the inevitable, “Old Age and Death.” These words are feared from among the strongest and or richest person to the poorest and or weakest individual. We all share this common fact, that one day we will age and no longer be here. With this said, why not put on the top of our New Year’s Resolution List, “Get a Will or Trust prepared and make the process easier on your family. What is a will? A will is a written document, signed and witnessed, which sets out instructions for the disposition of your estate only at the time of or after the event of your death. What is a trust? A trust is a set of instructions which come into effect as soon as the trust is created which means that it provides property management during your life and/ or after your death. My best comparison is a trust is almost like a company, one you manage while your alive, and if your become incapacitated or die, it can be managed by your successors according to your instructions.

Differences between a will and a trust Apart from the main difference that a will comes into effect only after death whereas a trust is in effect during lifetime and after death, there are many more things to think about when deciding between the two estate planning tools. Here is a list of some of the more significant differences which a trust attorney can explain in further detail: •

• •

A will and the property in the will is subject to the probate process; a trust and assets in the trust are not subject to the probate process. However, assets in both plans may be subject to federal estate tax. Because a trust does not go through the probate process it may remain a private affair; a will goes through probate and therefore it becomes accessible to the public. A will allows you to assign a guardian for your minor children; a trust allows you to control when and how your minor children, grandchildren and other dependents access your trust assets. Often, the costs to set up and manage a trust can be much higher than setting up a will. The assets in a will do not need to be managed; a trust can only plan for assets which have actively

been transferred into the trust, therefore the assets in a trust need to be actively managed. The actions of a trustee are not usually overseen by a court; the actions of an executor of a will are court supervised through the probate process. Because a will is only effective after death, it does not allow for instances where the person becomes incapacitated through injury or illness or old age; a trust provides a plan for the possibility of incapacity.

So, which is better for your family? Obviously both have their pros and their cons and if this breakdown of wills and trusts cannot help you decide which plan you should use, a qualified and knowledgeable trust attorney will be able to point you in the right direction and help you put together a comprehensive estate plan. 5 Tips for Managing Diabetes Living with diabetes is no laughing matter, but as many would say, laughter is often the best medicine. This is certainly true for comedic actress Yvette Nicole Brown, who was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes in 2013. In partnership with the American Diabetes Association and Colgate Total through the “Laugh Out Loud” campaign, Brown offers the following tips for a healthy smile and managing diabetes with a touch of humor. Get Moving When it comes to diabetes, small lifestyle changes can make a big difference. Taking the first step toward exercising can be difficult for many, but a little bit goes a long way. Try parking further away from the door, taking the stairs instead of the elevator or taking the longer route when you walk the dog. Whatever it may be, choose an activity that you enjoy doing and keep it consistent. Give Your Smile Some Extra TLC You’re twice as likely to develop gum disease if you have diabetes. When Brown learned that, she immediately started taking better care of her teeth. She recommends brushing morning and night with a specially formulated toothpaste like Colgate Total,

which reduces 83 percent more germs that cause gingivitis, the most common form of gum disease, as compared to an ordinary non-antibacterial toothpaste. Befriend Your Dentist Don’t be afraid to become friends with your dentist. Brown has her dentist on speed-dial, even calling or texting him in the middle of the night sometimes. You don’t have to be best friends with your dentist, but it’s crucial to establish a good relationship. They’re the expert who you can turn to for all your oral health care needs, and oral health care is important for those living with diabetes. Find Your Tribe When you’re living with diabetes, you need a strong support system. Be it friends, family or an online community, things are easier when you’ve got your tribe. A good place to get your questions answered and find people who are going through the same journey as you is OralHealthandDiabetes.com. Live Confidently “Every time I think about my type 2 diabetes, I say to myself ‘So what? You are a strong, confident woman. Don’t let your diabetes run your life,’” Brown said.

FRAME-IT

Brookside Plaza • 10637 Wiles Rd •Coral Springs

Diabetes isn’t a hindrance, it’s just a slight hiccup in life that you learn to live with. Get your mindset right, don’t let it dictate what you can or cannot do. When Brown was a kid her mom would say, “Sometimes you have to laugh to keep from crying.” That’s sometimes what people do when they get any kind of health diagnosis. The first response is, “Oh no,” and then you find a way around it. For more information about the connection between oral health and diabetes, visit OralHealthandDiabetes.com or search #OralHealthDiabetes on social media.

REAL ESTATE BY ANDI WITES

A Story with a Happy Ending Pricing right is good for seller and buyer

S

omeday I may write my memoirs of my real estate experiences. The following will be one to include for sure. It speaks to the importance of pricing right.

To be a Realtor, one has to be an expert in marketing, an expert in valuation, an expert in the community and a bit of a counselor in finance, decision-making and negotiating. Each transaction is different and takes on a life of its own. Experience helps to navigate the waters successfully on every deal made. This year, I listed a home for $499,900. After three meetings and combing through data that the potential sellers wanted to discuss in depth, we came to this initial list price which was a little over what my market analysis indicated as being closer to $470,000. I staged the home with the help of the seller, to clear clutter and show off the fabulous floor plan. Professional photography made it look “like a million” We had 17 showings in the first 30 days! No offers! More time would not have changed the results just taken more time to maybe get to where a buyer would offer, at a point when the sellers would be weary. I advised the sellers to reduce to an aggressive price that would be “on the money” and not “a give away.” When I suggested $469,900 their response was, “But we will have no room to negotiate,” to which I replied, “You need to get up to bat, and not be sitting in the dugout!” Perhaps with an ‘Energy Price,’ we will create real interest. And so we did. On a Friday we reduced to $469,900. The showings were numerous over that weekend, one offer came in after another and by the following Thursday we were

sitting with four offers. One was for $480,000! We signed, the house appraised, the buyer got his financing and we closed! This story tells it all. Pricing right is good for the seller and good for the buyer. The seller gets the best price the market will bare and the buyer obtains the home at market value as substantiated by appraisal.

Simple Ways to Enjoy More Family Time

Announcing the exhibit; Different… Not Less! An exhibit of Autism Art.

Andres Pola

Skillfully balancing an entire family’s demands from school, sports, activities and careers leaves little down time, but keeping family values front and center may be easier than you think when you make a commitment to carving out meaningful moments to share. Unplug from the digital world. Today’s technology-ridden world makes it easy for families to be present but not engaged. When you create a technology-free zone, you eliminate distractions so you can keep the focus on each other. Dedicate time every week to spend as a family without the use of TV, tablets, computers and phones. Bond and bake together. There’s a little baker in everyone. After all, who can help but “woo-hoo” when you pull fresh cupcakes out of the oven? Take a little time to embrace your inner Doughboy, turn your kitchen into a fun zone and savor all the moments with your family. One easy way to get started is with Pillsbury™ Purely Simple™ baking and frosting mixes, which use simple ingredients and contain no colors, preservatives or artificial flavors, providing a delicious homemade taste. They’re the perfect mixes to challenge your family to enjoy a kitchen full of laughter, anticipation and the delightful aroma of baked goods fresh from the oven. Share family stories. Reminiscing about special family moments is an essential part of keeping those memories alive. Showcasing old photo albums is a great way to share fun and nostalgic memories, which can help bring your family closer together. Whether it was a trip to the mountains or visiting a nearby museum, discussing and reliving these memorable moments can evoke fond memories and a willingness to create new ones. Set a day each week for family night. It’s easy to get caught up in a busy schedule, which is why consciously setting aside family time is essential. Once it’s set, you may be tempted to turn the open night at home into an invitation to catch up on housework or even just relax. Avoid the temptation and instead look for fun ways to spend that time as a family. Start a puzzle or play a board game. Initiate a DIY project for the house, spend time baking or cooking a meal, or simply sit together and talk about what’s happening in the lives of those who matter most.

This unique exhibit offers an extensive collection of art from aspiring artists with autism from the South Florida area. Presented by Artists With Autism, Inc, established for the purpose of promoting the talents of individuals with autism. Cynthia Drucker is the Founder and visionary behind the idea of Artists with Autism, Inc. As Cynthia saw her son finish high school, she realized there was little chance of him obtaining traditional employment. She focused on what his talents were and built an idea around it. In the early years, the nonprofit had four founding members Whats wrong with Papa? organizing “pop up” art exhibits and sold their art at outdoor events and holiday bazaars. It was her vison to obtain a permanent brick and mortar location for a space that can become a training gallery to teach aspiring artists how to become micro-enterprise owners of their own art business. Artists With Autism, Inc is an exclusive platform that provides a retail gallery space for artists with autism to show and sell their artworks. In as little as fourteen months, the Gallery has grown from the four founding members to thirty artists on the spectrum with more than one hundred pieces of artwork, handmade jewelry and crafts, as well as books written and illustrated by those with autism. The Gallery, located inside the Festival Flea Market in Pompano Beach provides artists with autism a retail outlet for their art that is based on consignment as well as a working art studio. The four Founding member artists rotate their schedule with supported help from parents or volunteers to manage the gallery and are doing “live art” when doing so. All disciplines of art are promoted at the Gallery. Jayson Halberstadt (Palm Beach) is a digital artist, Michael Vidal (Pompano Beach) is a graphic artist and recent graduate from FAU, Brandon Drucker (Deerfield Beach) works with acrylics, and Andres Pola (Plantation) uses mixed media. The artists also combine their artistic talents with poetry or biographies and have written and selfpublished several books. The members of Artists With Autism, Inc. are coming together to showcase their artworks at the free event; “Different…Not Less!” to be held on Saturday March 25, 2017 at Artserve. (1350 East Sunrise Blvd. Fort Lauderdale, FL) The event will include an art gallery, spoken word, music and mini Art Market with handmade jewelry and crafts. Reception and refreshments 4:00- 7:00pm. For more information call 954-895-2786 or visit their website www.ArtistsWithAutism.org The Papa books began as spoken stories written by Alima Newton, about the real life struggles of her son, Andres Pola,(illustrator) also known as Papa. The stories depict a family living with Autism and focus on the positive ways that families can not only manage, but thrive.

Lipo Abdominoplasty for Body Sculpting Impaired intestinal transit, caused by compromised migrating motor complexes which is controlled by parasympathetic modulation, which is responsible for rest, digest, immune system and reproduction, is associated with an increase in microbial colonization (bacterial overgrowth) in the small intestine. A reduced number of giant migrating contractions in the colon has been reported in patients with slowtransit constipation and might contribute to symptoms in some patients with IBS and constipation. Alternatively, accelerated intestinal transit, characterized by an increased number of giant migrating contractions, is observed in some patients with diarrheal disorders such as diarrhea-predominant IBS. The frequency of regular migrating motor complexes is influenced by the frequency of food intake, quality of sleep, and stress. Acute stress is associated with increased parasympathetic output to the small and large intestine and reduced vagal output to the stomach. Even though they have not been studied outside the setting of bacterial overgrowth, these alterations in gut transit are likely to have a major impact on the composition and organizational structure of the gut microbiota in different regions of the GI tract. ANS (Autonomic nervous system) which control sympathetic (fight or flight) versus parasympathetic (rest, digest, and immune system) plays an important role in mediating modulation of mucus secretion. ANS is likely to have important effects on the size and quality of the intestinal mucus layer, an important habitat for the biofilm, where most enteric microbiota reside. The ANS also affects epithelial mechanisms involved in activation of the immune system by the gut. This activation can occur directly through modulation of the response of the gut immune cells (white blood cells) to gut bacteria with antimicrobial peptides or indirectly by altering access of alumina bacteria to gut immune cells. Several preclinical studies have demonstrated that stressful stimuli can increase the permeability of the intestinal epithelium, facilitating translocation of gut organisms and inducing an immune response in the intestinal mucosa. Despite the mounting evidence suggests a deep connection between the gut microbiota and central nervous system, we still have yet to come up with clinical evidence based studies to determine how alterations in these interactions begin and how they are sustained over time. Controlled interventional studies are needed to test the effects of prebiotics, probiotics, antibiotics, dietary modifications, and possibly fecal microbial transplantation (yuk!) in patients with disorders in which altered gut microbiota–to–brain signaling has been implicated. There are small but consistent beneficial effects of probiotic intake have been reported in IBS but it failed to reveal major effects of the transient effects of the gut microbiota on human behavior. So before solid evidence based treatment recommendations become available, what should we do to enhance our odd to benefit from theses ground breaking, game changing disease prevention/ treatment regarding the human microbiome? It all come down to what I have been proposing all along. Following the known beneficial factors by eating “clean” (plenty of vegetable and fruit, i.e. prebiotics), and exercising regularly to enhance the native gut microbiome. In addition, routine practicing of parasympathetic enhancing activities such as establishing a good sleeping hygiene, regular meditation and yoga practice, and occasional acupressure therapy. Also, following the medical guidelines regarding reduce excess antibiotics use. And as an additional safety measure; taking daily probiotics either through diet (my preferenceGreek yogurt, Kefir) or probiotics supplement. To the minimum, you gut will thank you for that by having regular bowel movement. As usual, please consult with your physician before you embark on those healthy gut microbiota quest.

“together, together, we can make a difference.” t

Financial Aid for Emergencies

this philosophy has guided Boca Helping Hands (BHH), BYLINE HEREa non-profit organization that assists neighbors in need, for nearly 20 years.

For people facing financial crises, BHH steps in with immediate aid. Dollars devoted to this program help prevent eviction, utility shut-offs and other emergency situations.

Founded in 1998, BHH started as a soup kitchen in a local church. t today, it’s a thriving, $2 million operation that provides a wealth of food, financial, medical and jobrelated resources for individuals and families throughout the community.

Like food services, the financial assistance program is designed “to supplement, not sustain,” swedenborg explains. Boca Raton residents who apply must document their needs and usually receive a onetime payment, reinforcing BHH goal to lend a hand up, rather than a hand out. “we don’t enable,” says swedenborg. “Our mission is to instill dignity and foster independence.”

Feeding the Hungry BHH welcomes up to 200 guests a day for hot meals, which are served at the Remillard Family Resource center, BHH spacious home at 1500 Nw 1st court. Lunch is offered Mondays through Fridays, and family dinners are scheduled thursday evenings. Patrons include people of all ages, from all walks of life--the elderly, single moms with kids, veterans, the unemployed and the working poor. the program is unique among community meal programs. guests can choose from a wide selection of healthy, upscale fare, and enjoy their meals in the comfort and comradery of a pleasant, wood-trimmed dining room that resembles a small café. Menu items are lovingly prepared, and beautifully presented, by a caring team of volunteers. Even special occasions, from st. Patrick’s Day to the Kentucky Derby, are celebrated with specially themed dishes, dining room décor, and staff dress. “Everything, from the food to the atmosphere, reflects our passion for our work and respect for those we serve,” says Development Manager Karen swedenborg. through the program, hot meals are delivered to the homebound as well. Over 5,000 pantry bags, filled with a variety of groceries, are also distributed monthly to qualified, low-income residents of Palm Beach County. Additionally, the program’s backpack service, which benefits 1,400 boys and girls from ten schools, ensures that children are well fed on the weekends. Keeping BHH warehouse and kitchen shelves fully stocked is a huge undertaking. Canned, frozen, and fresh goods—1.8 million pounds annually--are donated by individuals and foundations, corporate and community food drives, and food recovery partners. at present, these partners include 100-plus stores and restaurants, from Publix, winn-Dixie, t target and walmart, to whole Foods, trader Joe’s and the capital grille.

“I’ve gotten flowers, emails and calls,” said Rosemary in a recent interview, her smiling face still beaming with excitement. “i didn’t expect to get the award. i am still in shock.”

Excellent job skills are key to gaining independence. To help clients build these skills, and better compete in the marketplace, BHH offers both mentoring and training. The mentoring program develops job readiness by coaching clients, one-on-one, on writing resumes, submitting online applications, conducting job searches, and practicing proper workplace etiquette. classes to improve English and computer literacy are available as well.

many in the audience were themselves in tears as they stood and applauded Rosemary, whose beneficence has helped dozens of nonprofits, from AVDA (Aid to Victims of Domestic Abuse), the YmcA, march of Dimes, george snow scholarship Fund, wayne barton center, st. Jude church, boca Helping Hands and Florence Fuller child Development center, to name a few.

#IAmStigmaFree

Job training centers on jump starting clients’ careers, through fast-track courses for lucrative positions as hospitality workers, home-health aides, commercial drivers, call center representatives and help-desk technicians. the program is highly successful, both in completion and job placement rates, says Swedenborg. “Students enrolled to become home health aides, for example, rarely drop out, and 85 to 90 percent find work after graduation.”

Health Care Services Added this year, BHH expanded its spectrum of services with medical and dental care. Joining forces with another non-profit, Genesis Community Health, BHH established a clinic at 30 sE 6th street in downtown Boca, where people from across the county receive physical exams, lab tests, and other primary care procedures. the ultimate goal is to treat 3,000 patients a year.

Join the NAMI Broward County mental health walk to raise funds and awareness to help change perceptions about mental illness.

Among those at her table was AVDA executive Director Pam o’brien, who nominated Rosemary for the award. “she is a true giver who thinks of others before herself,” said O’Brien. “She wants to make sure that women and children in need have a safe place to go.”

coincidentally, barely a month after receiving the honor, Rosemary has jumped back into an AVDA cause. she is on the committee planning the Feb. 21 “Heart of a Woman” luncheon fundraiser at the Boca Resort. The speaker will be Michelle Knight, one of the three women abducted, imprisoned and repeatedly raped by Ariel castro at his home in cleveland. Nabbed by the suspect between 2002 and 2004 were Knight (who has changed her name legally to Lilly Rose Lee), Georgina DeJesus and Amanda Berry. They finally escaped in 2013 when Castro was captured, tried and sentenced to life plus 1,000 years in prison. He committed suicide behind bars.

6 Tips to Protect the Things You Love Indoors and Out

W

hether the family dog gets his muddy paws on the couch, an ice cream cone melts all over the backyard hammock or a sudden storm soaks your new patio cushions, life is filled with unexpected messes. There’s no time like the present to plan ahead so you’re ready for whatever mess life throws your way. Here are some simple steps you can take to protect the things you love both indoors and out, so they last well beyond the season:

Indoors Clean upholstery: Sofas and chairs are vulnerable to surface stains, so cleaning upholstery on a regular basis is important. Start by vacuuming the furniture to remove as much surface debris as possible. Then use a damp, soapy cloth to gently spot treat the fabric, allowing it to soak in, reaching dirt beneath the surface. Once dry, protect the material with Scotchgard Fabric & Upholstery Protector, which helps repel liquids and stains, preventing future messes. Remove rug and carpet stains: Whether it’s red wine, tomato sauce or berries, spills and dropped food can create unwanted stains, damaging your rugs and carpet. Tackle these messes as soon as they happen with a quick and easy DIY recipe. First, sprinkle the spot with baking soda, let it sit for 10 minutes and then vacuum. Mix a tablespoon of dish soap, a tablespoon of vinegar and two cups of warm water. Blot with a clean sponge until it disappears.

and your living space all summer long, they likely collected dust. Most curtains can be steam cleaned, but taking them down and putting them back up again can be a hassle. To limit this, dust or vacuum your curtains every week as part of your cleaning routine. You can also use a lint roller to remove embedded dirt and grime that the vacuum can’t handle.

Outdoors Waterproof outdoor fabrics: With cooler temperatures coming, winter elements are sure to make landfall in your backyard. Protect your favorite outdoor cushions with the Scotchgard Outdoor Water Shield – moisture and liquids just roll right off. Protect your footwear: As you break out your suede boots to step out in style this season, keep them looking great by protecting them from salt stains and snow with a water- and oil-repelling leather protector. Care for your car: From muddy boots to coffee spills, messes often make it to car seats and floor mats when we least expect it. To clean these surfaces, mix 2 tablespoons of dish soap with 2 tablespoons of hot water and baking soda. Use a cleaning brush to lightly work through the stain in a circular motion. Wipe the area with a cloth and let the space air dry. To help prevent future stains, use an auto interior fabric protector. Find more tips for protecting the things you love at Scotchgard.com.

Clean your curtains: After using your curtains as a barrier between the outdoors

HEALTH & WELLNESS BY DR. SIMON WONG

Gut Microbial Imbalance and Emotional/Cognitive Function Part Two

Impaired intestinal transit, caused by compromised migrating motor complexes which is controlled by parasympathetic modulation, which is responsible for rest, digest, immune system and reproduction, is associated with an increase in microbial colonization (bacterial overgrowth) in the small intestine. A reduced number of giant migrating contractions in the colon has been reported in patients with slow-transit constipation and might contribute to symptoms in some patients with IBS and constipation. Alternatively, accelerated intestinal transit, characterized by an increased number of giant migrating contractions, is observed in some patients with diarrheal disorders such as diarrheapredominant IBS.

To coNTAcT ciTY News, cAll lUcY (ediToR) AT 954-255-5226

And as an additional safety measure; taking daily probiotics either through diet (my preference- Greek yogurt, Kefir) or probiotics supplement. To the minimum, you gut will thank you for that by having regular bowel movement. As usual, please consult with your physician before you embark on those healthy gut microbiota quest. Keep Pets Safe, Healthy During the Holidays

BEST OF CORAL SPRINGS & PARKLAND 2015 BEST PET GROOMING

The holiday season is synonymous with family gatherings, dinner parties, gift openings and plenty of festive food, all of which can pose challenges for pets. Lisa Darling, DVM, PetSmart’s resident veterinarian and pet care expert, offers this advice for keeping pets safe, healthy and happy this holiday season and throughout the cold winter months. Create a Safe Home This time of year, holiday decor can include seasonal plants, ornaments and candles, which means plenty of intriguing and dangerous new sights and smells for pets. For example, extra electrical cords can be tempting new “chew toys” for pets. Darling recommends taking special care to ensure extra electrical cords for festive indoor lighting are not accessible to pets by taping down or covering to help prevent injuries. Christmas trees can also pique the interest of curious cats and playful pups. Darling urges pet parents to firmly anchor trees so they can take any potential playful swatting and to keep breakable glass ornaments higher up on the tree, out of pets’ reach, along with temptations like tinsel and ribbons. Candles can also be problematic, so it’s best to avoid burning them or put them far out of pets’ reach. Seasonal plants like holly, mistletoe and poinsettia plants are poisonous to dogs and cats, so if you plan to decorate your home with them, place them in an area your pet cannot reach. Savor the Season The holidays are filled with festive food, treats and candy, and although it can be tempting to share human foods with your beloved pets, resist the urge. “Table scraps such as turkey, gravy and stuffing may look harmless, but even small amounts can lead to serious health issues,” Darling said. Instead, include pets in your festive feasting by offering them pet-friendly treats that look and taste like the real www.CityNewsMagaziNe.CoM

thing. An option like Simply Nourish Merry Meals, in flavors like Turkey, Sweet Potato and Cranberry, are healthy alternatives to the human food on the holiday table. Additionally, PetSmart’s meat and cheese tray, pie slice and turkey leg made of rawhide are fun takes on holiday feasting specifically formulated for pets. Keep Them Calm The holidays can be a hectic time for people and pets. Extra visitors to the house, travel and commotion can leave pets feeling anxious. “Before company arrives, try putting your dog or cat in a Thundershirt, which is designed to provide a calming effect when they experience fear or discomfort,” Darling said. “Many pet parents also find that supplements can work by promoting calmness and behavior which may help stabilize pets’ moods.”

Keep Them Cozy and Warm During especially cold winter days and nights, look to your pet to gauge comfort levels and plan time to dress them accordingly. Generally, if your pet is small and short-haired, it’s likely he or she is sensitive to the cold. The same goes for older pets and those that may be frail or ill. Darling says that sweaters, coats and booties to protect their paws are all smart (and comfortable) solutions. Booties are particularly important for icy areas that may be salted and can help guard paws from the harmful solution.

LEGALLY SPEAKING

BY KEN CUTLER, ESQ. & ANDREW RADER, ESQ.

After A Collision, Can Your Statements To The Police Be Used Against You? Did you know that Florida law considers communications between police officers and parties involved in motor vehicle accidents to be privileged? In other words, statements made to the police cannot be used against you. This is called the Accident Report Privilege. Under Florida Statute 316.066(4), accident reports are not admissible as evidence in any trial, civil or criminal nor are any statements made by the participants in the accident to the police officer investigating the accident. This subsection states: “Each accident repor t made by a person involved in an accident and any statement made by such person to a law enforcement officer for the purpose of completing an accident repor t required by this section shall be without prejudice to the individual so repor ting. No such repor t or statement shall be used as evidence in any trial, civil or criminal. The result of breath, urine, and blood tests administered as provided in §316.1932 or §316.1933 are not confidential and shall be admissible into evidence in accordance with the provisions of §316.1934.” The reason behind this privilege is to allow for candid reporting about an automobile crash to the investigating officer. This helps the investigating officer determine who is at fault for the accident. The idea behind the privilege is to allow for the reporting person to feel free to speak to the officer without worrying that their words will later be used against them in a civil or criminal trial. The accident report privilege covers any communication made to the police officer by anyone involved in a motor vehicle accident. This includes the driver, the owner of the vehicle, and the occupants of the vehicle at the time of the accident. The privilege applies even if someone listening in as the officer takes the information tries to testify about what that person told the officer. Be aware though that not all statements made to the officer are privileged, nor are all facts that are ultimately put in the accident report. The privilege does not cover conversations with eyewitnesses who were not in the accident, like bystanders. It also doesn’t protect against the revelation of “factual findings” made by the officer investigating the crash such as the results of field sobriety tests, breath tests, and blood tests. So, the results of these tests are not confidential communications and can be used against you as evidence in civil and criminal cases. The police officer’s own observations at the scene of the physical evidence or non-communication related evidence are also not protected by privilege. So, the recording of measurements, any road or skid marks caused by the vehicles, final rest places of the vehicles, road debris or persons involved, and other physical findings, are not privileged under the statute and the officer can testify about those findings. Remember you have rights that are spelled out under the law. If you are involved in a crash and want to know more about your rights please give us a call. All initial consultations are always free with no obligation. CUTLER R ADER, P.L. can be reached at (954) 913- CASE (2273) or visit us at www.CUTLERR ADER.com .

IgnIte Your Power

The Top 4 Ways You Can Improve Yourself In 2017 It’s that time of year: you’ve gotten past the non-stop parties, non-stop drinking and non-stop eating-of-every-appetizerin-site. Now, it’s New Year’s resolution time: whether you’ve yet to create them, are right in the thick of them or about to ditch them altogether, here’s a checklist of the best steps to achieving a better you in 2017. Resolution: Love the way you look naked. Action item: Some people love the way they look naked all the time, no matter what, at every stage in their lives. But those people are rare unicorns. For the rest of us, there are changes you’d like to make. Instead of spending time hating your overall image, drill down exactly what you’d like to change and get to work. Change your diet and get moving if you’re looking to shed a few pounds. Find a great zumba class or spin your way to success. If you’ve already gone those rounds and still don’t see success, consult a plastic surgeon about your options. At Pierini Esthetic Surgery and Pierini: A Solution For Beauty, our happiest patients are those who realize they don’t have to live with cellulite, sagging breasts, a crooked nose or those dreaded love handles if that’s keeping you from happiness when you look in the mirror! Resolution: Get more sleep. Action item: I get it. Between work, family and holiday madness, you were probably running on empty by the end of the year. But it’s necessary for your sanity (and your beauty!) to get back to a more restful routine. Stop using your technology before bed, for starters: that glow is keeping you up at night. I find some patients love putting lavender essential oil on their pulse points, while others need a dark, quiet space, including a luxurious, spa-like eye mask. Make it a goal, and protective about sticking to it! In addition, our patients tell us that they love saving time in the mornings once they start using a lash lengthener. (It allows them to skip the mascara!) In the meantime, if you’re getting enough sleep and STILL permanently battling dark under eye circles, consider making an appointment

to see if fillers under your eyes are right for you. Resolution: Calm the heck down! Action item: Whether you have a family, co-workers or loved ones that depend on you… or you fly solo… you know that if you’re not relaxed and happy, NO ONE is relaxed and happy. Make it a goal to gift yourself to a healthy treat, purely because it makes you happy. Whether that’s a daily walk, fresh morning smoothie or evening bike ride, find something you love and stick with it. We have patients that don’t dare ever miss their weekly or monthly spa appointments… they always tell us that the time they have with our practice for their facial or massage is like their own little vacation. Resolution: Do good for your community year-round. Action item: During the holidays, it’s easy to find a way to get involved in the community. But you’re looking for a way to do so during the rest of the year. Pick something you’re passionate about and do the research to see how you can get involved in either a local non-profit or a local chapter of a national organization. During key seasons, our practice, Pierini Esthetic Surgery and Pierini: A Solution For Beauty, loves helping out the community with “collections” for those who need it, like toy drives during the holidays, bra collections during domestic violence and breast cancer awareness month in October, and a school supply drive in the summer. What can YOU do to help out your community? Ana Cristina Trisan is a Florida Board Certified Physician Assistant with Pierini: A Solution For Beauty (www.PieriniBroward. com), located in Tamarac and Pierini Esthetic Surgery (www.PieriniEsthetic. com) located in Doral. She holds a Master’s Degree in Medical Science and has specialized in Medical Aesthetics and Cosmetic Dermatology since her graduation. At Pierini she performs Dermal Fillers, Botulin Toxin Injectables, Platelet Rich Plasma Treatments, Hand Rejuvenation, Lasers, Sclerotherapy, Kybella and Minor Cosmetic Surgical Procedures, as well as the Sculptra® treatments. To contact her, call 754-222-3503.

Creating Resolutions that Stick! The new year is upon us. The gift and energy of a fresh slate…a chance for growth, for change, for creation, for resolution of what we want to be different from the year before. Maybe it’s a resolution for improved health and weight loss, a resolution for a new career, a new business or enhanced relationship. Perhaps you’re resolving to manage your emotions, such as being less angry. Or you may simply resolve to cultivate more happiness and joy into your life every day. The challenge is not in what resolutions we set, the challenge is in how to achieve and sustain what we are after. I am sure we can all admit to the experience of setting a resolution, feeling ready and pumped, only to lose steam and commitment after a month or two. Yup, you’re not alone! There are a few key elements to creating sustainable, long-lasting change. And I am grateful to share them with you. 1.It’s all YOU - Before you can act on the resolutions you have chosen, you MUST start by accepting 100% personal responsibility for where you are in your life right now. Like, outrageous, full, entire responsibility. Period. Once you are able to say, yes, it is me that is the control center of my life, then you can go to key element #2. 2. Get Clear – What is your resolution? Why do you want? How will life be different once you get there? Who do you get to become on your way? What does it feel like? What will not getting there cost you? These are some great questions to ask yourself as you get clear and create that vision. It is with that clarity and vision that you will be able to make choices that align with that vision. That align with that big WHY behind what you want. When any obstacles arise, which they will, you can call on that vision – picture it, feel it, believe it – and that carries you through, inspiring you to continue going for it! 3. Say it Loud, Say it Proud – Share your resolution. Tell people. Write it with dry erase on your bathroom mirror. When you speak and see your intentions and goals, they become more real. The universe hears it too. Sharing it also creates accountability. Bonus tip – Write and speak your resolutions as if there are already happening. 4. One Bite at a Time – When you see your resolution, chunk it down. Create an action plan that allows you to take small, little shifts. When we start off sprinting, it leaves very little energy for the long haul, so see it as a marathon. Slow and steady. Small step by small step. 5. Practice Gratitude – When you are in a state of gratitude, you are reprogramming your brain into an abundance mindset. Abundance attracts abundance. Commit to a daily practice journal and write down 5 things you were grateful for in each day. The super bonus here is that it also instantly creates more joy and fulfillment in your life. You have everything inside you, to create everything you want…a life that you love! Go get it! FAMILY FEATURES

weaters and scarves aren’t the only ways to brace yourself against blustery weather. There’s no time like winter to putter in the kitchen, where the cozy heat from the stove and the aromas of mouthwatering dishes can warm you from the inside out. Rich, hearty stews and creamy casseroles are perfect for winter dinners, but when you’re craving something other than traditional comfort food, there are plenty of other options that will chase away the chill, such as a glass of Pinot Noir. These three dishes feature common proteins – chicken, beef and fish – in preparations that make it easy to reimagine your winter weather menu. Find more recipes and ideas for warming up this winter at culinary.net. A Cold-Weather Solution

While it can be a challenge, there are several ways to pair food and wine appropriately during winter, despite bitter weather. A warm, comforting dish, like Roasted Chicken with Salsa Verde from James Beard award-winning chef Jonathan Waxman, combines well with rosé during the cold season. One reasonably priced wine that matches chicken well is Angeline California Rosé of Pinot Noir. The crisp flavors of light red fruits combine with the herbs accompanying the chicken. It’ll also complement the many other flavors of winter, when an array of dishes hit the table and challenge hosts to find the right wine to serve. For more wines that work well in wintertime, visit angelinewinery.com.

Chicken and Salsa Verde

Recipe courtesy of chef Jonathan Waxman Chicken: 1 fresh free-range organic chicken (4 pounds) sea salt, to taste freshly ground black pepper, to taste 1/4 cup extra-virgin olive oil 1 lemon Salsa Verde: 1/4 cup capers in salt 4 anchovy filets 3 cloves garlic 1/2 cup chopped fresh parsley 1/2 cup chopped arugula 1/2 cup chopped fresh basil

Whole and Hearty

A hearty meat-and-potatoes meal is a sure way to warm up on a cold winter night. This heart-healthy, one-dish meal is made with lean top round beef, lots of vegetables and a spicy herb mixture. Find more healthy main dish ideas at health.gov.

1/2 cup chopped fresh cilantro 1/4 cup chopped tarragon 1/4 cup chopped fresh chives 1/4 cup chopped fresh sage 1 cup extra-virgin olive oil 1/4 teaspoon sea salt To make chicken: Heat oven to 450 F. Wash chicken in hot water. Dry with paper towels. Using kitchen shears, cut out backbone of chicken and remove any fat (this can be added to chicken stock). Using heavy chef’s knife, cut out breastbone. Season halves with sea salt and black pepper. Place chicken halves, skin side up, on two sizzle platters and dab with olive oil. Cut lemon in half and place 1 half, cut side down, next to chicken on each platter. Roast chicken 35 minutes, basting every 10 minutes. When done, remove chicken to platter and pour off excess fat. Cut each breast in half and cut the thigh from the leg. Serve with salsa verde (recipe below) and garnish with roasted lemon. To make salsa verde: Soak capers in cold water 1 hour then drain. Soak anchovies in cold water 15 minutes then pat dry and remove bones. Using mortar and pestle, smash capers, anchovies and garlic, until smooth, then transfer to large bowl. Add all herbs and olive oil. Season with sea salt. Pair each serving with Angeline California Rosé of Pinot Noir.

2 large carrots, peeled and cut into 2 1/2-inch strips 2 bunches (1/2 pound each) mustard, kale or turnip greens, stems removed, coarsely torn Partially freeze beef. Thinly slice across grain into strips 1/8-inch thick and 3 inches wide. Trim away visible fat. Combine paprika, oregano, chili powder, garlic powder, black pepper, red pepper and dry mustard. Coat strips of meat with spice mixture. Spray large, heavy skillet with nonstick spray. Heat pan over high heat. Add meat; cook, stirring constantly, 5 minutes. Add potatoes, onion, broth and garlic. Healthy Eating Ideas for a Hectic Autumn When the pace of family life gets busy, it seems easier than ever to forgo healthy eating plans, and the hectic autumn season is a big culprit. However, you don’t need to compromise flavor for nutrition when turning to convenient options that fit your busy lifestyle. On average, Americans are only meeting the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s MyPlate recommendations for servings of vegetables, fruit, proteins, dairy and grains a mere seven days out of 365. Despite their best intentions to eat more healthy meals, many families need inspiration and simple solutions so they can make better eating choices a reality more often.

e have a neighborhood treasure that has just celebrated its 10th Anniversary. It’s named Dyan’s Country Kitchen and it is well known for providing great food in the welcoming environment that has been created by owner Dyan Harpest and her staff. Located in Coral Springs, the restaurant is THE place for family breakfasts, holiday dinners and meetings of friends and business associates for coffee or a most satisfying meal. Over the years Dyan’s has catered thousands of parties and events, school outings and picnics in area parks. It is unlikely anyone in the area has not had the pleasure of enjoying some of the great food that comes out of Dyan’s kitchen. That food and the service of her staff have made Dyan’s Country Kitchen the five time winner of the City News Reader’s Choice Award for Best Breakfast and their lunches and dinners a match for any other restaurant in town. When asked for some thoughts on being such a popular part of the community for ten years, Dyan shared her thoughts: “As I reflect on 10 years of business in this hospitality industry and the commitment, the many hours and

the hard work, I realize why I strive for excellence in so many ways but the most important reason is the people every day. My gratitude goes out to all of the wonderful, loyal customers who we know by their name or their face and get a hello and a smile or maybe a story to tell or to see them and their families and what we share together. I am so appreciative for the wonderful community we live in and the way so many people make a difference and how I can contribute to that. Much thanks goes to my employees and my family who give so much to make each day the best and have built our success through their great work ethic. As we open our doors every morning it’s like opening our hearts to you. The work, the preparations and collaborations that go on in our busy kitchen to give you the quality and consistency and care of great food and great service is what we strive to do and to do with great success”. As the sun comes up each day, the staff at Dyan’s Country Kitchen is already hard at work getting ready to serve up “The Best Breakfast in Town” and it’s so good they serve it all day. Get a premium cup of fresh coffee, fresh sliced nova on a toasted bagel, a jumbo omelet or some fluffy pancakes. As the breakfast crowd begins to taper off, friends and business people rendezvous for a lunch that might include signature items like Dyan’s freshly prepared

corned beef, brisket, solid white tuna salad, homemade matzo ball soup, healthy salads, a great burger or an over stacked sandwich. The BLT with some cucumber salad and some of Dyan’s freshly made potato chips is my favorite – definitely award worthy. Then there is dinner which is available Wednesday through Saturday from 4PM till 9PM (Early Bird Dinner served from 4PM till 6PM). You will not be disappointed if you visit Dyan’s for dinner. The menu is extensive and offers everything from creative chef specials to grab and go dinners with a full menu available for takeout. Besides the in-house crowd, the staff at Dyan’s Country Kitchen fills catering orders all day long for home parties, office get-togethers, business and corporate events, and everywhere else around town from Town Hall to schools, churches, temples – anywhere some delicious country kitchen food can make people happy. Seven days a week you can count on great food and friendly service at Dyan’s Country Kitchen. Anytime you want a great meal at a reasonable price and a nice place to spend a little time, take a trip to 9100 Wiles Rd. in Coral Springs, Florida. It is really all of us – the people that have the pleasure of going to Dyan’s – that say “thank you Dyan” for serving the community so deliciously well for now over ten years. Dyan wanted to wish all her customers and friends a very Happy and Healthy New Year and we wish her a very Happy Anniversary as we look forward to having Dyan’s Country Kitchen a cherished part of our community for many more years to come.

5 important benefits of family time

W

ith work, school, homework, after school activities, friends and more, there are countless activities that compete for time on the family calendar. Family time, however, can serve as an escape from the demands and deadlines of daily life, and is paramount in building strong relationships. Family time offers many benefits, including building confidence, creating a stronger emotional bond between family members, improving communication skills, better performance in school and reduced behavioral issues, as well as providing an opportunity to make memories built on fun, laughter and togetherness.

Family Bonding Spending time partaking in everyday family leisure activities has been associated with greater emotional bonding within families. Both “core” leisure activities, such as playing a board game, watching television, gardening or playing outdoors and “balance” activities, which require a greater investment of planning, time and money, such as a family vacation or trip to an amusement park or sporting event, can have a big impact on the overall health of a family, according to research published by the National Council on Family Relations. Simply making it a habit to display interest in the well-being of your family members can lead to a willingness to share problems and build mutual respect between parents and children.

Academic Performance

Risky Behavior

Children whose parents spend time with them and take an interest in their education tend to do better in school and complete higher levels of education than those whose parents spent their time at home pursuing their own hobbies, according to a study published on familyfacts.org. Providing essential guidance through studying and assisting with homework, as well as incorporating educa tional games, can provide children a positive influence, lead to emotional well-being and help them strive for higher levels of educational success as they grow.

On average, adolescents who communicate and spend more time with their families tend to exhibit lower levels of aggression and antisocial behavior than peers with less involved parents, according to familyfacts.org. A closer family relationship has also been linked to reductions in acts of violence, delinquent behavior, substance abuse and tobacco use. Communication and spending time together can help relieve feelings of anxiety or anger and reduce urges to participate in risky behaviors.

Communication Skills

One of the most important benefits of spending time together is also one of the simplest: creating memories that will last a lifetime. Whether it’s playing a game together, attending an event, going on vacation or just sitting in the living room or around the table talking and laughing, positive memories are beloved possessions that give family members a sense of belonging and can help reinforce the importance of family.

Children learn how to behave and communicate by watching their parents interact with each other and others. Family bonding time is a way to model expected behaviors, and spending time together as a family can help parents relate more to their children and open the lines of communication. Spending a few minutes together once everyone is home for the day, whether for dinner or a scheduled family “meeting,” can help families learn to listen to, trust and understand one another, and build appropriate behaviors.

Making Memories
