COMMUNITY NEWS

LETTER FROM THE EDITOR Welcome to our November CITY NEWS magazine, our special holiday edition. We welcome the snowbirds back but with them come the traffic and crowds. We need to learn to live with it. More readers and more sales are good for all of us. Since my husband and I bought the magazine group one year ago, we have grown our magazine group by adding Boca’s Best, an upscale bi-monthly being mailed to 50,000+ homes and businesses, east of the Turnpike. No other local magazine saturates an area like our magazines do(Coral Springs/Parkland, West Boca, Coconut Creek/Margate and Boca Raton.) We now mail to over 110,000 homes and businesses. We thank all our communities for their support and feedback about our magazines. This month, City News/Boca’s Best are sponsoring 3 charity events. If you go to any of the 3 events, please introduce yourself to Jerry and I. If unable

to attend, please support the cause. We have a local golf tournament, a Veterans event and a 5K Walk, something for everyone. With Election Day coming, we hope the country can put all the angst generated by the Presidential election behind us. We have our own famous celebrity here in Parkland running for Commissioner, Ken Cutler. To see the community service Ken does along with the other fantastic people involved with all our cities, just moves us. It makes us want to publish a constantly improving magazine. Thanks to you, we will. Even more groundbreaking, we are now introducing a Print/Social Media Package that will help alleviate many of our advertisers who fear that they will be left out of the Social Media Craze. Enjoy The Magazine

Nothing brings me more happiness than trying to help the most vulnerable people in society. It is a goal and an essential part of my life - a kind of destiny. Whoever is in distress can call on me. I will come running wherever they are

Top 5 Myths About Breast Implants There was a time when no one wanted to admit they had breast implants. Nowadays, it is more accepted and commonplace than ever, ESPECIALLY here in South Florida where we bare skin most of the year. Breast augmentation is the second most preformed plastic surgery procedure worldwide. But if you’re still wondering about all of the whispers and rumors you’ve heard over the years regarding breast augmentation, then this article is for you. Sit back as I dispel the top myths about breast implants: Myth 1: Breast implants have to be replaced every few years. FALSE! Saline implants lose volume over time and therefore are either replaced or refilled as needed based on the rate and degree of deflation. It may be a few years or 20+ years after surgery depending on various factors. Today’s silicone implants no longer need or are recommended to be automatically replaced after a certain time. Silicone implants are now the first choice for most plastic surgeons. In fact, they are my first choice for our patients. Myth 2: Silicone implants cause cancer. FALSE! At one time this was considered a possible concern. However, numerous extensive studies have shown that this is simply not true. Myth 3: Breast implants look fake. FALSE! In the days of Pamela Anderson the desired look was huge, high and round, which gives a “fake” appearance. This is no longer the trend amongst most of today’s plastic surgeons or patients. We always have an in depth conversation with our patients to discuss their ultimate goals, and encourage you to do the same with your surgeon. What are you looking for in terms of size? Do you like a rounder or a more natural tear drop shape? What do you want your breasts to feel like? Different options are available today that were not before. Myth 4: Saline implants are recommended because they are softer and look and feel more natural. FALSE! Actually, the reverse is true! Silicone implants have been

4 CSP_NOVEM_2016.indd 4

NOVEMBER 2016

TO cONTacT ciTy NEws, call lucy (EdiTOR) aT 954-255-5226

specifically designed to closely mimic the consistency and shape of a natural breast, so a more natural look is obtained. Saline implants are often overfilled to delay the rippling effect that occurs over time due to loss of volume and subsequent gradual deflation. Overfilled implants are hard and give a round, “fake” look. Some patients request this look, but often the primary reason people go with saline implants in today’s practices is because they are less expensive initially. However when saline implants eventually need another surgery to be refilled or switched to replace the volume loss, in the end the cost is higher. We always discuss all available options with our patients, and let them decide what best suits their desired results based on the pros and cons of both implants. Myth 5: Why pay more for breast implants when I can go to a bargain surgeon and get the same result. FALSE! I always say that going to a qualified plastic surgeon, especially someone who is board certified, makes a difference. Training and experience matter! Ask to see photos of the surgeon’s work ahead of time, and remember that the field of plastic surgery is like anything else in life: you get what you pay for. By no means do you need to pay triple the average cost, but I caution you to beware of the bargain basement price surgeons or centers. Stephanie A. Stover, M.D., is board certified in plastic and reconstructive surgery. She is the medical director for Pierini: A Solution For Beauty (www. PieriniBroward.com), located in Tamarac/ Coral Springs, and Pierini Esthetic Surgery (www.PieriniEsthetic.com), located in Doral. After graduating from the University of Florida, College of Medicine, Dr. Stover completed her residency in general surgery at Mount Sinai Medical Center of Greater Miami. She also completed three separate fellowships in plastic and reconstructive surgery. Dr. Stover is affiliated with the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, American College of Surgeons, Florida Medical Association and the American Medical Association. Back To School-2 Last month’s column addressed the American Opportunity and Lifetime Learning Credits available for taxpayers who pay qualified education expenses. While credits are generally more favorable than deductions, there are numerous tax provisions that grant tax deductions or other benefits for education related expenses. In most cases, taxpayers cannot utilize both credits and deductions in the same tax year. In addition, the various deductions have different phase-outs based on modified adjusted gross income. The deductions themselves may apply to different types of expenditures. Below is a quick summary of some of the available education expense deductions and other benefits that may be useful. Coordinating the use of credits, deductions and other tax benefits can be a complex matter. It is important to consult your tax advisor to maximize your benefits. Commonly Utilized Education Deductions:

1. Student Loan Interest Deduction: Interest expense paid on student loans for dependents is deductible up to $2,500 of interest per year on qualifying student loans. Married filing joint phase out begins at $130,000 of gross income, with full phase out after $160,000 of gross income.

3. U.S. Savings Bond Series EE and I: Interest income can be excluded to the extent funds are used for qualified tuition and fees. These funds must be used for the taxpayer, the spouse, or dependents. Married taxpayers must file a joint return to secure the exclusion. A phase out applies to married filing joint taxpayers, with adjusted gross income starting at $116,300, with full phase out at $146,300. 4. Above the Line Deduction for Qualified Tuition: An above the line deduction for up to $4,000 of qualified tuition is available for taxpayers with modified adjusted gross

income (“MAGI”) up to $130,000. If MAGI is between $130,000 and $160,000, the maximum deduction is $2,000. Over $160,000 of MAGI, no deduction is permitted. 5. Qualified Tuition Plans (Section 529): States sponsor Section 529 Plans. Each State has its own rules and regulations. Generally, all income grows tax free with distributions for qualifying education expenses non-taxable as well. There are no Federal deductions upon contribution, but many states do provide meaningful deductions. 6. Education Expenses Incurred as Part of a Trade or Business: Enhancing one’s skills in a current trade or business can result in an important tax deduction. So long as the education enhances skills, rather than enables one to enter a new trade or business, the expenses may be deductible. If expenses are deductible, all related expenditures, such as travel, over-night stays, and related meals, might also be deductible. These expenses would qualify as excess itemized deductions reportable on Schedule A. Despite all this complexity in determining which education credits and deductions provide the best results, meaningful tax savings can be achieved. Because each of the above-noted provisions have their own separate rules and regulations, it is important all taxpayers incurring education expenses become familiar with the provisions, so they can maximize their benefits as they incur today’s high cost of education. More information is available on these matters in Publication 970, Tax Benefits for Education, available on the Internal Revenue Service website. This article provides generalized tax and financial information for educational purposes only. It does not provide any personalized tax, investment, legal, or other business or professional advice. any veterans who have ser ved our countr y call Coral Springs home.

The City of Coral Springs wants to recognize our local veterans for putting their lives on the line. The City’s Veterans Day Ceremony will be held on Friday, November 11th at Veterans Park, located at 8601 Royal Palm Blvd. The event star ts at 10:45am. Residents are invited to wear patriotic colors and suppor t those who ser ved our countr y. The ceremony will include speeches by veterans and politicians, a 21- gun salute, placing of wreath and raising of the militar y and United States flags. “The goal of hosting the event is to honor our militar y veterans for the ser vices that they have provided our countr y,” said Rick Engle, Director of Parks and Recreation for the City of Coral Springs. At this year’s ceremony, the Vietnam veterans will be recognized in honor of the 50th Anniversar y of the Vietnam War. “At the event all veterans present will be asked to say their name and the branch of militar y they ser ved in. It is impor tant to hold Veterans Day so that ever yone remembers the ser vices provided by our veterans to keep our countr y free. It is something that no generation should ever forget,” said Engle, adding, “It is also impor tant that the veterans see that people do care and that they are not taken for granted. The event is a small way that the community can show the veterans that people care.”

NOVEMBER 2016

Members from the Veterans Coalition of Coral Springs will be in attendance and will have a guest speaker at the ceremony. The local Veterans Coalition is composed of veterans, spouses, siblings and descendants of veterans, and honorar y members of the community who ser ve other local veterans and their families primarily residing in Coral Springs and surrounding communities in South Florida. Their mission is “veterans helping veterans and their families.” The organization provides assistance in getting answers for questions relating to V. A. benefits; providing local discounts (where available through community par tnerships) for prescription/pharmacy needs, discount dining at local restaurants, car rentals, movie theatre tickets, spor ts event tickets; and by just being there, as an understanding friend, with an ear to bend. Ron Stancavage, President of the Veterans Coalition of Coral Springs, says the City’s Veterans Day Ceremony is an “impor tant day to recognize all veterans”. Stancavage, who is a Vietnam Veteran, says the Coalition is made up of 50 members, men and women, who have ser ved in various wars, including Vietnam, the Korean War, World War II and others. “Most of my friends are from the veteran’s groups. It’s about camaraderie; we talk about our militar y days and what’s going on today. We’ve formed a friendship,” said Stancavage. The Veterans Coalition hosts many events and meetings. They are always looking for new veteran members. For more information, visit w w w.veteranscoalitionofcoralsprings.org.

Little teeth are a BIG deal!

Can acupuncture help Epilepsy? The most c ommon treatment for this neurologic al disorder is medic ation, t ypically some t ype of antic onvulsant, which c an varies based on a person’s medic al histor y. Unfor tunately, the medic ation does not work for ever yone and can cause severe side ef fects. Anti - epileptic drugs only work on 70% of people, therefore the grow th in alternative options is being sought. A growing number of people with epilepsy are f inding that Acupuncture treatments helps c ontrol seizures without side ef fects. Acupuncture can be ver y helpful for epilepsy reducing the frequency and severit y of seizures.

Researchers tested electro acupuncture in a laborator y to determine the ef fects of low frequency (10 HZ) on acupoints for epilepsy. The EEG ( electroencephalogram) results showed that electro acupuncture signif icantly suppressed brain epileptiporm discharges and simultaneously improves sleep pat terns. Acupuncture has been practiced for over 30 0 0 years as par t of traditional Chinese medicine. This ancient method of preventing and treating illness has a ver y dif ferent basis than Western medicine. Acupuncture Physicians will treat imbalances in the body such as seizures by inser ting sterilized stainless steel needles along the body to access the t welve meridians or channels where energy f lows through the body. Needles are lef t for 30 to 40 minutes during sessions. In the c ase of epilepsy, points chosen would be inf luencing brain energy and increasing the f low of blood to the head. Acupuncture helps the body to heal itself by not only relieving the symptoms but by also treating the cause of the illness. Studies conducted in China have shown that Acupuncture is a safe and reliable way to reduce or lower seizure activit y. Another German study involved 98 people with epilepsy, ranging in age from 2 to 52. All drugs were discontinued during the f irst weeks of treatment. Acupuncture treatments last 1 to 8 months and 65 people showed marked improvements with an absence of seizures during 1-year period without drugs. It is also impor tant to understand that c omplementar y therapies may help improve epilepsy indirectly bec ause they make you feel bet ter generally. If stress is a trigger for your seizures, a therapy that helps you feel less stressed may help you to have fewer seizures. Acupuncture carries low to no risk. Acc ording to the 19 9 8 c onsensus statement from the National Institute of Health, Acupuncture is clearly helpful for a number of c onditions including, stroke, migraine headaches, addictions, low back pain and more. Make sure to seek for a licensed practitioner in your area who has trained at an accredited school.

Our Parkland Library: The Heart of The Community By Ken Cutler

he first park in the City of Parkland was built in 1988 and dedicated at a ceremony on November 5, 1989. It was called John H. Quigley Park for the City’s fourth mayor who served Parkland from December, 1968 through February, 1972. In addition to ball fields the park had a concession stand that actually also served as Parkland’s first city Library. On November 15, 1988, with the permission of the Parkland City Commission, Carolyn Marks founded Parkland’s library at the concession stand. She had been looking for a story time for her young sons and unable to find one, decided that the City needed a library. Cramped and very crowded within a short period of time; it clearly would not serve Parkland’s reading public. Then City Manager Harry Mertz and City Commissioner (later Mayor), Robert Marks were able to convince Broward County to part with a doublewide trailer that was a remnant of a condemned trailer park and in 1992, the library moved to larger quarters. The double-wide trailer was placed on the grounds just north of the ‘Old City Hall’ at the northeast corner of Parkside Drive and Holmberg Road. Coral Ridge Properties donated the carpeting and a recycled US Post Box served as the first book drop. The first official salaried library director was Patricia “Pat” Markey. Diane Woodworth David, a long time Parkland resident became the first President of the Parkland Friends of the Library which was incorporated in July of 1992. In addition to library founder Carolyn Marks, Diane was joined by Felecia Greenberg, Elsie Winship, Laura Scher and Marsha Freed as the first officers of the Friends. By the way, Elsie Winship served in the capacity of Treasurer for the Friends from 1992 to 2008

and thereafter continued as a distinguished member of the Friends and also actually worked at the Parkland Library until her death in 2014. Then and now, the Parkland Friends of the Library raises money for the valuable programs and services of the library, hosts events to connect community members with the library, and works as a partner with the City Commission to plan for the future growth of the library. Through the years, its committed volunteers have contributed to the library’s children and adult programming; added to the books, media, library equipment and reference resources available at the library; provided thousands of hours of service; sold used books and held a coffee bar; and generally provided funding to supplement and support the operation of the Parkland Library. Beginning in April, 2001 Ken Cutler became the new President of the Parkland Friends and ushered in a new era for the Parkland Library. As the ‘Old City Hall’ was in the process of moving to its current location to the corner of Holmberg Rd. and University Drive, the Friends were anxious to convince the City Commission to allow them to move the Library into the soon to be vacated ‘Old City Hall.’ The plan was to ask the Parkland Commission to build a new library with an expectation that the idea would probably not be acceptable as too costly but the fall TO cONTacT ciTy NEws, call lucy (EdiTOR) aT 954-255-5226

back alternative, moving to the vacated Old City Hall, might be. To the surprise and delight of the Friends, the Parkland Commission thought it was a great idea to open a new library next to the “new” City Hall. The City was able to procure monies through development impact fees to accomplish the task of getting the library built. A Library Building Committee made up of Carolyn Marks, Diane David, and Ken Cutler, newly hired Library Director Suzi Hayes, Commissioner Ricky Gordon and Mayor Sal Pagliara met regularly with Samuel J. Ferreri of the SchenkelShultz Architecture firm to plan every facet of the new library to take back to the Parkland Commission for approval. The building, which cost over $1.5 million, was designed by SchenkelSchulz and built by SFCS, Inc. and it took a year for the building to be ready for occupancy. The Friends rallied together many wonderful volunteers from the community to unload and shelve the books from the old Library into the new one in preparation for its opening. The dedication and grand opening of the beautiful approximately 13,000 square foot Parkland Library, at its present location within the City Hall Complex, was held on Tuesday, June 3, 2003. A large tent was erected in front of the library and Mayor Bob Marks, former Mayor Sal Pagliara, Commissioners Ricky Gordon, Michael Udine, Bobbi Pugliese and Diane Weissman joined Carolyn Marks, Diane David, Ken Cutler and Suzi Hayes in cutting the ribbon to open the doors. In an effort to make the library more accommodating on cool weather days, the Parkland Friends of the Library came up with a fundraising program called “Pave the Way to Reading” which raised money by selling engraved bricks in anticipation of building an enclosed garden area outside of the library. The shady oak tree was graciously donated by longtime Parkland benefactor Bill Keith and on November 3, 2004 Ken Cutler and the Friends officers at the time (Judith Ramos, Elsie Winship, Marsha Freed and Lynn Hall) hosted the ribbon cutting ceremony attended by several dignitaries including City Commissioners like Jared Moskowitz, Mayor Bob Marks and Martin Kiar, who was a Florida State Representative at the time, and Carolyn Marks. www.CityNewsMagaziNe.CoM

CSP_NOVEM_2016.indd 19

Over the years the Parkland Friends of the Library have continued in their efforts to support and encourage amazing programs and activities at the Library. Other incredibly dedicated members of the community have volunteered their time and efforts to make the Parkland Library what it is today. For the Friends, Natalie Bigio, Marilyn Krantz and Doug Kruse have served as past presidents; and Andrea Jacobs is the newest elected president of the group. Other officers or volunteers over the past years including those mentioned above, were: Linda Gottlieb-Libuser, Lynne Fenoglio, Ira Goldman, Rick Berman, Jean Porras, Stuart Krantz, Betty, Bader, Pamela Evans, Harlene Zweig, Charlett Busigen, Joyce Lanzilla, Ronda Swords, Judith Ramos, Jenny Haye, Amy Conza, Annette Muse, Helen Pasciolla, Stephanie Citron, Mary Ellen Hamilton, Lisa Hitchcock, Nancy Demena, Nicole Ott-Yunis and Lisa Glassman. There have additionally been scores of dedicated student and adult volunteers in the library, artists who have contributed their wonderful works for display and many talented local artists, musicians and speakers who have made the library an incredible place to visit for education, culture and fun. Additionally, the Parkland Women’s Club, Murray Zweig of Stylebuilt Construction, Riverglades Elementary School and many other dedicated benefactors have come to the aid of the Friends and the Parkland Library over the years. The library simply could not operate without a great core of employees who make it such a warm and inviting place to visit. Library Director Joe Green, Program Specialists Michele Andrews and Rhonda Weiss and other wonderful and dedicated employees really help to make the library what it is today and those from the past like Pat Markey, Suzi Hayes, Louie Alfano, Diane Dixon, Selma Lane, Wendy Grant, Jan Johnson and many other incredible, dedicated people. Currently, with the increase in Parkland’s population, the library is now finding itself nearing maximum capacity for all of its activities. After extensive studies and surveys on the needs and desires of the community, the City Commission has decided to expand the library. From its earliest days of planning it was contemplated that expansion would be a possibility with the growth of Parkland’s population. In a win-win

partnership arrangement, Parkland Library Director Joe Green was able to reach out to the FIU School of Architecture and FIU By Design group to create conceptual plans and drawings for making additions to the Library. The Students and faculty developed ideas into a series of schematic design proposals that were presented to City officials and staff. The FIU team has paid close attention to the program-related objectives of the City’s expansion of its library. After meeting with City staff, Joe Green and Ken Cutler as the Parkland Friends’ Liaison, the number of designs were narrowed down and on Wednesday, March 2nd, 2016, the FIU team presented its final two schematic design proposals to the City Commission of Parkland. The Mayor, City Commissioners, and members of the Parkland Friends of the Library all felt that the students had done an amazing job and the City is now moving to the next phase which includes the hiring of an architect to draw up the plans for the expansion.

According to the Parkland Library Master Expansion Plan: “This project involves the planning and construction of the Parkland Library expansion. This project is funded through Library Impact Fees which are collected from developers and specifically designated to expand the City’s Library. This project aims to meet the increasing library and programming needs of a growing City population.” It is anticipated that the planning, construction and completion of the project will be fully accomplished hopefully by 2019. Kenneth A. Cutler, Esq. is a partner at the Cutler Rader, P.L. law firm. He has been a Parkland resident for the last 19 years. He was past President (for almost 10 years) and immediate past Vice President of the Parkland Friends of the Library. He has worked extensively with the Parkland Historical Society on various historical projects including The Mystery of Holmberg Road, the Margate-Blount Archaeological project and tracking down the photograph of past Parkland Mayor Manning for the Commission Mayor’s wall.

Dear C.J.,

NOVEMBER 2016

- C.J., Parkland

Our practice focuses on relational issues before, during and after divorce and we are glad you have come to us with your concerns. You may not be aware that in Florida, parents with minor children are required to participate in a parenting class, which we have co-authored, and we speak to issues and solutions that will help children not feel so stressed regarding divorce. Often adult children see their parents’ divorce through a new lens and now as a parent, it makes sense that you are now able to understand your dad’s position a little differently. Your mom however, has every right to feel as she does and if she still feels anger and resentment towards him that needs to be respected. The attempt to reconcile is only 6 months “new” and after so many years expecting your mom to embrace the idea of all of you sharing Thanksgiving might be asking too much too soon. Perhaps you might consider celebrating Thanksgiving with your dad another time over Thanksgiving weekend, but separately from your mom. We agree, you need help with this! There are a lot of emotions tied to this issue, and through our experience with many families we recommend that you and your mom come in for a session or two so we can help guide you both to express your perspectives in an environment that is non-judgmental, safe and conducive to solutions. Best - Karen and Debbie

My parents divorced when I was 12, and I have been pretty much estranged from my father ever since. My father had an affair with his nurse and married her, and. they are still together. My mother never remarried and is still quite bitter. My mother and I moved to Florida when I was 16. I am now 39, have my own family and as an adult with children of my own I see his position differently and would like my kids to have a relationship with their grandfather, if possible. My father moved to Florida 6 months ago and has recently tried to make amends for not being there when I grew up, which is somewhat awkward, but I see hope. The problem is my mother. The mere mention of my father turns her into a raging irrational woman. Thanksgiving is coming up and I am stressing over what to do. If I include him, mom won’t come and she will be hurt and will act awfully. I am completely torn as to what to do. I am also furious that their divorce is still causing anxiety in my life. I feel like I am 12 all over again. Need serious help with this!

Losing Control with Joint Ownership

W

hen it comes to estate planning, one should always be aware of the possibility of losing control with joint ownership. At Reinfeld & Cabrera, P.A. we want you to understand that while joint ownership may have some important benefits, there are some aspects that can cause a lot of problems later on.

exceptions may apply. But when the second or last owner dies the property will then be inherited by her family. Scenarios like this can happen to any family (even blended families with children from separate marriages for example) and are becoming an ever-increasing problem.

Joint ownership, also known as joint tenancy with right of survivorship, is the most common form of joint ownership. For example, in most marriages most assets are jointly owned. Joint ownership with the right of survivorship is different than other types of joint ownership with one important defining feature – if one partner in the joint ownership dies, ownership is automatically transferred to the other partner(s). This can be seen as both a blessing and a curse. It is a blessing because property shared through joint ownership does not undergo the probate process, thus eliminating some major expenses. The only exception is if there is no other partner for the property to go to (if, for example, both die at the same time or if the last owner does not declare another joint owner before their death) in which case the property will be subject to the probate process.

Some other problems that may occur with joint ownership include gift and income tax, the increased risk of being named in a lawsuit, of a person who owns the property with you being named in a lawsuit, losing the asset to a creditor, limiting your tax planning options, the difficulty of removing unwanted co-owners, and the court possibly becoming a “new” co-owner if your partner becomes incapacitated etc. While the benefit of avoiding probate may be a big draw card to many people, an experienced attorney will always make you aware of any potential dangers and how you can avoid them with proper estate planning. Call Reinfeld & Cabrera, P.A. today for a free estate planning consultation to see how you can avoid losing control of your assets.

The real problem comes in with the fact that property transferred through joint ownership to any remaining partners is not controlled by any wills because transfer of property takes place immediately upon death. It passes outside the probate process, and therefore is not considered an assets for the purpose of Probate. The asset is now completely under the control of the surviving owner(s) and they can do whatever they please with it. This could result in you unintentionally disinheriting your own family. This happens most often when siblings are in joint ownership. If one dies, the property will not be inherited by his family regardless of what his will may say,

A Big Pet Peeve - Selling a Home with a Pet

recently read an article in the Florida Realtors’ News that stated: “Like curb appeal is to a good first impression, a home free of pet odor will be perceived as clean and well maintained. Even a little pet hair around the baseboards could worry the buyers. Pet stains and odors can certainly reduce a home’s value.”

friend if they can smell anything. If animals have urinated in the house, replace the affected carpeting or flooring, and eliminate the odor at its source. Ideally, pets should be removed from the home while the house is on the market. If impractical, take pets out during showings or keep them confined in a small room or crate.

Don’t get me wrong, I like the little furry friends, but it does make the process of selling a bit more challenging. One of the tasks that I often do is explain to a pet owner that even though they may not realize it, a pet can be detected immediately upon entering the door. Realtors around the country agreed that pets are a loved staple of American home life, and 68 percent of U.S. households have at least one pet. But when it’s time to sell the family home, pets can complicate the process. Animal allergies are a common concern, and buyers who have them can be easily turned off if a house has pets. While some buyers may ask upfront not to view homes with pets, this often doesn’t come up until after they’re inside a listing. There are things you can do to prepare to sell your home if you own pets. Clean the entire house, especially rugs or carpeting, before putting the home on the market. It may mean calling in professionals but it will be worth the investment. Don’t forget to have the air vents cleaned, too. Once the house is clean, keep it that way. Pet owners often don’t notice the odors caused by animals, so ask a Realtor or

“Safety is the major reason to remove pets from the home during showings,” said David Scott of RE/MAX Valley Realtors in Illinois. He was once attacked by a dog at a property he was showing. “Pet owners usually think their animals are harmless, but accidents do happen, and both homeowners and brokers could have legal liability.” Pets can also be a distraction. Some people are phobic about animals. Others adore them. Either group can have a hard time ignoring a pet wandering around a home, and 15 minutes playing with a cat takes time away from viewing the home.

Penny Sales Tax Hike On Broward, PB County Ballots By Dale King While voters across the nation are gearing up for the long-awaited nov. 8 election that will decide the U.S. presidency for at least the next four years along with a bevy of state and federal contests, those who cast ballots in Broward and Palm Beach counties face an even more personal issue - a financial one – when they go to the polls. The electorate in the two massive South Florida counties will decide whether to tack another penny on every dollar they spend on items covered by the current 6 percent state sales tax. actually, the ballot questions are different in each county, but the net result is the same – an increase from 6 to 7 percent. and the destination for the cash raised – if voters choose to add another copper Lincoln coin to what they are already paying for their taxable goods – is virtually the same, though Palm Beach County is earmarking 50 percent of total revenue raised to schools. Voters in Broward face a pair of ballot questions which will each add a half-cent to the sales tax. Official estimates say the additional penny will add up to $12.6 billion over the 30 life of the increased tax and will be spent mainly on infrastructure, in particular, transportation-related projects. Broward residents who cast ballots on election Day will have to adopt both measures to make the effort work. if one question fails, the other does, too. Meanwhile, in communities from Boca Raton north to the Martin County line, the electorate will be asked to hike the sales tax from 6 to 7 percent for the next decade. The temporary penny-added tax is expected to generate $2.7 billion in new revenue. Half the money will be paid out for improvements to school buildings, general infrastructure such as roads, bridges and drainage and amenities such as parks and fire stations, said Todd Bonlarron, assistant Palm Beach County administrator. Florida allows its 67 counties to add to the base 6 percent sales tax figure. Bonlarron said Broward and Palm Beach are two of only nine counties that have not puffed up the bottom line. The county official did note that Palm Beach added a half-cent to the sales tax a few years ago. But that, he noted, was “a good example of government putting a tax on the table and having it expire.” it also shows how the county can put a plan in place, execute it and monitor it until it fades into the sunset. Both Bonlarron and gretchen Cassini, assistant to Broward County administrator Bertha Henry, said no organized opposition has emerged to the measures

26 CSP_NOVEM_2016.indd 26

NOVEMBER 2016

in either county. The Broward official said the two ballot questions came about through a “very difficult process.” For nine months, Broward was unable to reach an accord with the 31 cities on a plan to increase the sales tax. Finally, she said, “we negotiated with all the communities” to create ballot language they could support. Cassini said she didn’t want to speculate on whether the ballot question will pass, she did say, “it was polling more than 50 percent [favorable] before we did our outreach.” Realtors, she said, have expressed concerns about the entire initiative. Some residents as well as the federal government are also griping about using the sales tax instead of the property tax to rebuild, restructure and revamp the counties’ innards. in Broward County, every level gets a piece of the pie. The county will get 50 percent of the revenue for the life of the penny sales tax for transportation purposes that include light rail expansion and traffic light synchronization. in addition, unincorporated Broward and the 31 municipalities will get the rest of the cash for projects like road repairs, for 20 years. During the final 10 years of the three-decade assessment hike, 60 percent of revenue will be turned over to Broward’s communities for infrastructure work. The other 40 percent will be shuttled off to the county for regional projects. in Palm Beach County, government leaders say the tax is need to fix a backlog of problems that began to pile

up during the Recession of 2007-2008 and beyond. The 50 percent chunk in PBC goes to the school district to repair and upgrade schools and their campuses. Bonlarron said Boca Raton education facilities are in line for some cash; specifically, J.C. Mitchell elementary School, due to get $1 million, and Boca Raton elementary School. The other half of the money would be split between the county government and the county’s 39 cities and towns. PBC will take 30 percent and the municipalities split the other 20 percent based on their respective populations. The county government plans to spend its share — $810 million – largely to repair roads, bridges, government buildings and other facilities. like the school district, county government plans to spend a large portion – at least 12 percent – on new projects, including new parks, buildings, streetlights, sidewalks, sheriff’s office substations and a homeless shelter. Bridge replacement and resurfacing of roads are in order in Boca Raton, Bonlarron said, including lyons Road and Military Trail, SW 18th Street and Palmetto Park Road. Park improvements will include work at the South County Regional Park in West Boca, including several new features. if the Broward questions fail, said Cassini, “things won’t get any better. There will be no rail beyond the street and no ability to create east-west express buses.” if Palm Beach County turns thumbs down, Bonlarron said officials will have to “look at alternatives – ad valorem taxes, bonding, and service cuts.

COMMUNITY NEWS

COMMUNITEENS

Weston & Davie students join forces to help others locally – and nationally

by JARED COHEN, FOUNDER & BROWARD CHAPTER PRESIDENT

I was raised to know that not everyone has food on the table at every meal, or family around to support them. I tried to volunteer, but did not really know where or how. That is why I thought it was important to create Communiteens. Communiteens is an organization dedicated to making community service more fun for teenagers in their local communities. After talking to several friends I realized that many teens saw community service as tedious – a chore that was mandatory to graduate high school – not as an opportunity to change their community. I began Communiteens to make community service meaningful and fun, hoping that participants will gain something valuable from the experience of volunteering.

12NOVEMBER 2016

CSP_NOVEM_2016.indd 30

Throughout the 2015 school year, our first, The Weston and Davie chapters gathered high school students together to do quarterly charitable events, including a toiletry collection for LifeNet for Families that garnered over 1,000 mini-toiletry items, a present wrapping event for Clara’s Secret Santas, and a We Finish Together medaldesigning gathering for patients in the hospital. The Weston and Davie chapters also collected over 500 pounds of pasta, including donations from Whole Foods and Mimi’s pasta for LifeNet for Families. We are actively planning our events for 2016-17, including a sports party at Children’s Harbor. “I like being a part of a group that brings teens together to help their community through different events and charities. I know we can make a difference when we come together,” said Brooke Behar, Weston Chapter President. Communiteens has quickly grown to include chapters in Weston, Davie, South Carolina, and New Jersey. Our goal is to continuously open new chapters that would

help teenagers change their communities all over the country. Teens throughout the country can start their own chapter to garner these skills. By starting a Communiteens chapter, high school students gain powerful leadership skills and are responsible for planning quarterly events, contacting and recruiting members, and updating social media. After filling out an application and interviewing, Chapter Presidents will receive a Communiteens Chapter Toolkit and personalized help such as brainstorming new event ideas, learning how to recruit for a chapter, and how to communicate with local charities. High school students can alternatively join Communiteens as a Chapter Member, enjoying local community service opportunities with friends while receiving community service hours. If you or someone you know wants to take part in this community-changing experience, please visit www.communiteens.com or contact me directly at jared@communiteens.com.

Nutrition And Plastic Surgery When discussing cosmetic enhancements of the face and body, patients often focus on the procedures and products available and ignore the significance of nutrition. At the cellular level, the aging process is characterized by mitochondrial damage, inflammation and glycation. Plastic surgery addresses the external signs of aging. Proper nutrition, including diet and supplements, can not only slow the aging process, but also ensure that the patient heals properly after surgery. Adequate Vitamin C is necessary for collagen production which strengthens a wound and fights free radical damage. Other less often mentioned antioxidants which are more potent are resveratrol (found in red wine) and pycnogenol (pine bark extract). Both have demonstrated clinical efficacy in reducing inflammation in the body and reversing the signs of aging. Patients often prefer nonfat supplements, which at times are actually higher in sugar and more damaging to the body. Too much sugar in your diet leads to increased levels of insulin and can progress to fat infiltration in the liver. Unsaturated fatty acids such as Omega-3 and Omega-6 are essential fatty acids that are good for the body. They are often found in plant foods such as vegetable oils, nuts (almonds, walnuts) and seeds (flax) and in fish such as salmon. It is the saturated fats and trans fats that should be avoided as much as possible. These are found in butter, red meat, and high fat dairy products. Recently, scientists have presented conflicting evidence as to the benefits of Omega-7 fatty acids. Palmitoleic acid is not an essential fatty acid, meaning our bodies can manufacture it from other nutrients and we don’t need to get it from food. Experimental studies have shown it to be beneficial in reducing heart disease and triglyceride levels. More controlled clinical trials are necessary to determine the health benefits of this omega.

Dr. Messa is board certified by both the American Board of Plastic Surgery and the American Board of Surgery, an active member of the American Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, American Society of Plastic Surgeons, and a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons. He is a recognized expert in cosmetic plastic surgery and has achieved Allergan’s Black Diamond Award as one of the top 1% of plastic surgery practices in the country by volume. Dr. Messa has also achieved Chairman status with Medicis and Mentor Corporation. This award honors distinguished leaders in cosmetic surgery for demonstrating expertise and excellence through a high volume of aesthetic product procedures. As we age, our metabolism changes and hormone levels decrease, and the effects of years of cellular damage from poor dietary habits and lack of proper nutrition become more evident. Conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) has been shown in studies to reduce fat and preserve muscle tissue. CLA helps you lose weight faster by reducing fat storage introduced by your daily diet and accelerating fat metabolism within the existing adipose (fat) tissue. Similarly, L-carnitine is a naturally occurring amino acid which plays a vital role in the metabolism of fat. It functions as a transporter of fatty acids into the mitochondria-the metabolic furnace of the cell. Carnitine boosts energy by stimulating the body’s burning of triglycerides as fuel. L-carnitine allows the body to burn more fat.

Our Children’s Silent Screams!

W

e are definitely living in different and more difficult times than ever before in regards to the way our children are growing up. There are many factors that can be pointed at that drive this point home. Let’s just begin with the divorce in America. It is rapidly approaching 50% and the number increases for subsequent marriages. Think of that for a second, that means that at least half of the couples that once looked each other in the eyes on that special day and said this will be forever have since hired lawyers and spent tens of thousands of dollars just to not be with that person anymore. These days it seems that a fair amount of the divorces or at least separations are happening while the kids are still preteen. Here is where some of the problems and disconnect comes to the children. First you have the fact that these kids are dealing with their perfect families being ripped apart and they have no control over it. Then you factor in that they have 2 residences, 2 separate sets of rules that sometimes contradict each other and possibly 2 different ideologies on how a child is supposed to be raised. Then you get the kids being the pawns

between the two sides. These kids get spoiled out of guilt and competition between the parents or just flat out neglected because the two sides are spending way too much time trying to mend their own broken hearts that they are not considering or helping to mend the broken hearts of their children. All of this and more lead to the silent screams of these children who now are left to grow up way too soon and they just are not mentally and emotionally equipped to handle. Parents sometimes have the

unrealistic expectations that their child will just be ‘ok’ cause they are tough! I was mentoring a 4th grader who didn’t stop talking, even to breathe, for 30 straight minutes every week. The Principal told me after two months that this boy is doing well with me, he even finally spoke out loud in class today. She was shocked when I told her how much he talks with me. He is not ‘weird’ or ‘different’. He just needed to use his voice and find someone who will listen and relate! Sometimes it is as simple as that!

High School Sports

FOOTBALL

by the Keeping Dreams Alive Foundation | www.PTRGAcademy.com “Changing a Culture, one day at a time,” is the phrase that seems to echo amongst the Coral Glades High School football program this year. The 2016 season has brought in yet another coaching staff for the Jaguars, but this one is making a positive impact on the team and its players. First-year head coach, Chris Baldwin, is making an effort to create a culture that encourages student-athletes to have academics as their rst priority. Coach Baldwin has made it clear that th in order to have a successful program “academics, academics, academics" is the forefront and the identity of this year’s football team. The Jaguars kicked off their regular season with a 2-0 record against Inlet Grove High School and Pompano Beach High School. Following these double-digit wins, the Jags have been faced with obstacles every week since. Whether it was being outplayed by a great opponent or just beating themselves, is for the athletes to decide. The toughest times for Coral Glades has been, without a doubt, their two heart-wrenching losses late in the game against two local opponents; rst against Taravella High School and then against Coral Springs Charter. Though the Jags have struggled on the eld this season, they have persevered. Consistency is the most important thing at this point Cha for this football program and it has nothing to do with wins or losses. It has to do with a coaching staff and a group of young men that have consistently invested their time into succeeding on and off the eld. It’s tough to see success beyond a scoreboard from a spectator's perspective, but it happens every day with this young football program. "It's not one week, it's not one month, it's one day at a time. It's understanding your student-athlete and where they want to be... It's a lot of pressure for these young men. They have to approach every day with an attitude to get better and do something better for themselves. I want them to take from this experience the importance of getting an education now and beyond." - Head Coach Chris Baldwin

Obstructive Sleep Apnea

O

bstructive Sleep Apnea is a common disorder. If you have OSA, it means that your airways collapse partly or all of the way while you are sleeping. Muscles of upper airway relax when you fall asleep. If you sleep on your back, gravity can cause tongue to fall back. This narrows the airway and can reduce the amount of air getting in the lungs. Narrowed airways causes snoring by making tissue in the back of throat vibrate. Apnea is when the airway is completely closed, so breathing temporarily stops. The airway can collapse repeatedly during the night. Air cannot get in to your lungs, resulting in lack of oxygen. You wake up so you can start breathing again. Frequent awakenings at night can cause sleepiness during the day. Lack of oxygen and frequent nighttime awakenings have negative consequences for your health.

Signs of Obstructive Sleep Apnea 1. Loud or frequent snoring. 2. Choking or gasping while you sleep. 3. Morning headaches. 4. Daytime sleepiness or tiredness. 5. Trouble concentrating.

Who is at risk for OSA?

You are at increased risk if you are: 1. Overweight. 2. Hypertension. 3. Male with a neck size of 17 inches or more. 4. Female with a neck size of 16 inches or more. 5. Male over the age of 40. 6. Female over the age of 50.

2. Dental oral appliances, which are made by the dentist. They bring the tongue and jaw forward to keep the area beyond the tongue open. 3. Surgical option, UPPP which is done by the ENT specialist.

Not all people with OSA have risks factors. Children can have OSA as a result of large tonsils or narrow airways. Young adults even those who are physically fit may also have OSA.

4. Also, the lifestyle change including quitting smoking, quitting alcohol, reducing weight, sleeping on the side, and keeping the head at 30 degrees also help for the sleep apnea.

How is OSA diagnosed?

5. New treatment option INSPIRE therapy, also available in selective population.

Your health care provider can refer you to a sleep specialist. Sleep study can occur at a sleep center or at your home.

airways open during the nighttime. The patient needs to lose weight, if the patient has intolerance to the CPAP.

Born to be Wild? Rampless Motorcycle Trailers safer way to tow your motorcycle is your new BFF By Rachel Galvin “Heading out on the highway? Looking for adventure?” If the words to “Born to be Wild,” are your mantra, you know there’s nothing quite like the feel of open road. But what happens when you want to transport the motorcycle? The scourge of the true enthusiast, there’s myriad damage that can and often --does occur when trying to get it up or down a ramp, and who needs that headache before a road trip? Enter the RampLESS trailer -- no headache, no hassle--NO NEEDLESS DAMAGE. Longtime entrepreneur Dan Scott of Lighthouse Point, paired up with fellow motorcycle enthusiast and “steel man” Sam Graffeo and together the duo created a unique trailer to solve their problems and lo and behold --their company, Rampless Motorcycle Trailers was born. “I saw the design and was completely captivated. I contacted Dan in 2015 about purchasing the patent from him when he received it. He wanted to do something with it other than just sell it. I asked him to come see my steel company and that was the incubator that spawned the conversations that ultimately lead to a partnership,” explained Graffeo, a Parkland resident. We opened Rampless Motorcycle Trailers in April of 2016,” says Graffeo, who has worked in the steel industry since 1980, opening his own steel distribution company, SG Steel Services Co. in Ft Lauderdale, in 1994. He added, “Our trailers are the safest, easiest and quickest way to transport motorcycles. There are no ramps involved in our trailers. The entire floor of the trailer lowers to the ground to load and unload. Your feet are always touching the ground or floor of the trailer for complete control, which provides a worry-less experience in the process.” Since the beginning, the pair honed the design to make it seamless, safe and nearly effortless. Their trailers, which are patented and DOT compliant, have a six-month warranty, and are designed to ingeniously lower flat to the ground, which eliminates the need for a ramp while staying connected to the tow vehicle. All the wiring they use is internal to the frame. Front wheel chocks are made by Condor Products, which is rated No. 1 nationwide. Their trailers come standard with black or white rims but upgrades to custom wheels and radial tires are available for the true aficionado. “If someone has a customized bike, say a special

40 CSP_NOVEM_2016.indd 40

NOVEMBER 2016

paint color or theme, we offer them a variety of colors they can select. If someone’s motorcycle is long or extended further than any stock bike, we can build the trailer to accommodate that bike as well,” he added. “We make trailers to accommodate one or two motorcycles, ATVs and trikes and we custom build to suit nearly every need. If a client doesn’t see it in our selection, we’ll build it for them.” They also sell accessories, such as upgrades on their tires and wheels, spare tires and spare tire brackets, and stone guards to fit the trailers. Besides creating a product that “ramps up” the experience (pun intended) for fellow motorcycle enthusiasts, Graffeo and Scott both believe strongly in giving back to their community. Rampless Trailers participates in myriad charity and non-profit events. Their next event is slated for the 29th annual “Toys in the Sun Run” at Markham Park, December 4th where they’ll have a display. They also offer special discounts of $100 off any trailer for veterans, active military and first responders. Ready to get your own trailer and tow with confidence? Their manufacturing plant, at 850 NW 61st St. in Ft Lauderdale is open Mon-Fri 8 a.m. to 5 p.m and their you can pick from the models they have in stock and see how cool this innovation really is up close and personal. Can’t make it to them? You can also view the models on their website at www. rampless.com and they’ll deliver to you. “We will deliver to Interstate I-4 and south, and everywhere in between,” says Graffeo. So when you’re born to be wild, it sure helps to be safe and stress free too. For more information on Rampless Motorcycle Trailers, call 954-218-6611. Incognito Salon Celebrates 26 Years as the Beauty Legend in Coral Springs

COMMUNITY NEWS

O

wners Mario and Lou built the salon 26 years ago from the ground up and have never looked back.

The Salon sits a top a two-story building at 1750 University Drive (next to Big Bear Brewing Company). Mario and Lou and the Incognito Team have created the Best Boutique Salon in South Florida! Incognito Salon has received many awards, such as Channel 10’s #1 Salon in South Florida 3x in a row. New Times has also awarded them Best Stylist and Salon. In addition they have been Coral Springs City News Best Color Salon and Hair Salon 5x in a row beating out any other salon in the area. Mario and Lou have created a sanctuary where you can forget about your busy life for a few moments. Upon entering the salon, the first thing you notice is the three walls of glass. This not only connects you to the nature outside, but also gives you a feeling of a true New York City loft. The creative vibe is surging throughout the salon and its creative team. You are about to experience your new transformation.

Incognito was one of the first salons to introduce the technique of Balayage’, which is, freehand painting light and dark pieces without foil giving a more natural look to the hair. It has been the rage lately even though Incognito has been doing it since the 90’s. The newest trend is contouring with color. This allows your best features to shine by enhancing with light, medium and dark pieces around your face. Everyone colors their hair today, one way or another. If not fullblown color, they dabble with a few different tones or highlights. Incognito has built a reputation for hair color, they are best known for it. Multi color blondes, mink browns and of course, hypnotic reds. Most of all they are experts; they will take into consideration your eye color and overall skin tone to create a perfect balance for you.

As you begin the journey, you check in. One of the owners greets you at the main reception area, you are handed a robe to change into. Then on to your first destination. The creative chair. You are seated, introduced to the artistic stylist, and your in-depth consultation begins. Your hair is now assessed on the best possible style and color to fit your face and lifestyle.

At Incognito Salon, they take the time to make you feel like a guest. The team wants you not only to feel your best, but they really care about you. They will even remember your name. Both Mario and Lou have dedicated themselves to providing not only great service but have made Incognito a trendsetter in the world of hair fashion and interior design. The salon is always changing to keep current on design trends.

The next stop will be the treatment area, where you will have the ultimate shampoo experience. Some consider this the most luxurious part of the whole process. A wonderful scalp massage and conditioning treatment are high on the list of services at the area.

Guest travel from all over, such as Key West, New York City, Arizona, etc. to experience Incognito Salon over and over again. This is why they have become a Beauty Icon for the last 26 Years!

As your journey continues, the artistic hand of your stylist will begin to create, but only after consulting again for the final time. Because the hairstyle must parallel your life, it is proper that your hair is evaluated both dry and wet. What is a great hairstyle if you cannot manage it at home? Your texture and growth patterns will be analyzed, followed by how well you work with your hair and styling tools, such as flat or curling iron, blow dryer, etc. All of this will result in the best possible hair finale! Education is the key to their success. Every Wednesday afternoon is dedicated to

42 CSP_NOVEM_2016.indd 42

education. The staff collaborates on the latest hairstyles, color and what is trending around the world at the moment. In addition to the in-depth education in house, they travel to New York to the L’Oreal Soho Academy for the latest trends. Incognito is one of L’Oreal’s leading Platinum salons in Florida. This title allows the team to preview the newest products out of Paris before anyone else.

Mario and Lou and their team look forward to meeting new guest and want to say, “Thank You” to many of their loyal and wonderful guest that have become part of their family.

NOVEMBER 2016

If you hope to sneak in smaller walks during the day, it means that you must have appropriate footwear handy at all times. This may mean stashing a pair of walking shoes under your desk at work or in the trunk of your car. If the walk is short enough, your casual comfort footwear may suffice, but be careful not to log too many steps in your work shoes. In addition to forgetfulness, having to schedule several walks throughout the day means there are multiple opportunities to get sidetracked. If you can get into the habit of having a walk be your go-to activity anytime a few minutes open up in your schedule, this is easily avoidable. It’s all about building these micro-walks into your lifestyle which does take some advance planning to accomplish that. For starting, a well prepared from home light lunch (tuna sandwich/ sliced chicken breast on salad) and healthy afternoon snack (nut, seed, and bean trail mix) has to be ready on hand for a quick energy boost and squeeze out the extra time for the activities. It would also be great if you can solicit a office “walking buddy” to have a scheduled walking break during your lunch or afternoon breaks, you can re-enforce each other with this healthy habit. Another of my favorite tip is using whatever time you can spare in the morning or after work. For example, if there is 15 min time gap in the morning before you are heading out, instead of checking out your email or watching your morning news (you can always do that later at work or listening to your NPR news during your commute), walk out of your house for 8 minutes and walk back to your house pretending you are late for work (probably don’t need to pretend if you walk slow). By breaking the walk up into shorter bouts means you’ll have to remind yourself to squeeze them in throughout the day. My recommendation as always to wear a fitness tracker such as FitBit to remind yourself of your accumulative daily activities. As a general rule of thumb, 10,000 steps a day is always a good starter.

eside a proper diet, a persistent exercise regimen is essential for a complete lifestyle management. Not surprisingly, the most often excuses cited in my office for not adequately engaging in a persistent exercise routine is the lack of time. Often in our modern day busy life, finding more than a few spare minutes at a time to devote to physical activity each day can be next to impossible. But sometimes a few spare minutes are all you need — add them all up, and they can make a difference. The issue of time, or the lack thereof, has given rise to the micro-walk trend, which involves taking several short walks throughout the day rather than devoting one large chunk of time to exercise. For many, this is both physically and logistically easier than a longer walk. Studies have demonstrated that getting up and moving just 75 minutes a week — or 11 minutes a day — has the potential to combat the symptoms associated with arthritis, like stiff and aching joints. While the American Heart Association recommends 30 minutes a day for better cardiovascular health. What’s more, some studies have even suggested that breaking up daily walks into smaller segments — such as three 10 -minute walks — works better for regulating things like blood pressure as opposed to one single 30 -minute walk.

Get Picky About Pet Food

BEST OF CORAL SPRINGS & PARKLAND 2015 BEST PET GROOMING

Good nutrition puts pets on track for better health (Family Features) When a beloved family pet experiences health problems, it can take a toll on the whole family. In some cases, it can take weeks or even months to identify the problem, and more importantly, where the solution lies. In some cases, the answer is as simple as changing what your pet eats. If you’ve always thought all pet foods were equal, think again. Veterinarian-developed formulas, such as those offered by Diamond CARE, are created for pets with unique dietary needs but also provide affordable complete nutrition, without sacrificing quality or taste, so you can feed your pets the special diet they need for as long as they need it. Learn more about these common ailments that may be corrected with a new highquality feeding regimen, and talk with your veterinarian about a treatment plan to get your pet back to better health.

Sensitive Skin While a rash or other skin irritation can be an obvious sign that your pet has sensitive skin, other behaviors such as excessive scratching, biting and licking can also signal a problem. Identifying the cause is essential to bringing your pet comfort. Skin irritation among pets is generally caused by something in their environment, such as an allergy, a parasitic infection or in more extreme cases, a neurogenic or infectious condition. Skin problems can also arise from poor nutrition.

If your dog has skin sensitivities that might be related to diet or allergic skin disease, try a diet with hydrolyzed salmon as the single animal protein source. Ingredients such as omega-6 and omega-3 fatty acids have also been shown to be beneficial to skin and coat health. Some sensitive skin formulas not only contain hydrolyzed salmon but are grain-free and made with peas to enhance the flavor and provide high-quality carbohydrates. 100% NO-KILL SOCIETY

Weight Management A few extra pounds on your dog or cat may not seem like a cause for concern, but too much weight can cause a long list of health problems. Just like humans, one of the best ways to counter a weight problem in pets is to adjust what they’re eating. An option such as Diamond CARE Weight Management Formula for Adult Dogs or Adult Cats can help address your pet’s weight issue without leaving it feeling hungry. Powdered cellulose, a source of insoluble fiber, helps your pet feel full, while L-Carnitine aids the body in metabolizing fat. To make sure your pet gets all the nutrients needed, this formula is rounded out with omega fatty acids, guaranteed antioxidants and probiotics developed specially for canine and feline digestive health.

Puppies Kittens Dogs Cats 21287 Boca Rio Rd Boca Raton, FL 33433

Talking with your veterinarian can help identify other ways to help your pet lose weight and also help you rule out any underlying medical concerns that may be causing weight gain or preventing your pet from being as active as it should be.

Sensitive Stomach Though it may seem like it at times, not all dogs have cast-iron stomachs. A limitedingredient formula that combines potatoes and egg protein is a good, easy-to-digest option for sensitive dogs. Other beneficial ingredients may include psyllium seed husk, a source of beneficial fiber, which helps support proper digestion, and probiotic strains that are native to the canine gastrointestinal tract. HEALTH WELLNESS Dr. Mike rozenbluM

Getting Better with Age

I

am not a big drinker, but I have heard it said a time or two that certain wines get better with age. In fact, I did a little research and found out that some bottles can sell for hundreds of thousands of dollars. Many things get better with age. After a few decades, cars, boats, and motorcycles go up in value. Even toys can be more expensive over time. However, these “classics” or “antiques” go up in value, partly because they have been so well maintained. Well, what about you? What is happening as you age? I see some patients who appear totally unaffected by time. Youth and vitality seem to be their hobby. Others… well, not so much. The truth is all of us are heading in a direction we don’t often care to envision. Past our early twenties, the human body peaks in most capacities and begins a process which ultimately ends in death. 100% of us will eventually die. Sadly, some will do so prematurely. Disease, accidents and trauma are out of our control. We live in a broken world and things happen. However, as long as we have breath in our lungs, we have a responsibility to those around us to take care of ourselves and retard the process as much as possible. Here is a list of the top 5 things you can do to age gracefully, no matter what season of life you are in.

52 CSP_NOVEM_2016.indd 52

NOVEMBER 2016

1. Exercise. This one always gets a bad rap. Some make exercise seem like a terrible and boring thing. Exercise means to use something: your mind and yes, your body. Just move doing the things you love to do most. 2. Eat Well. Not as in quantity but more like quality. Here is a good rule of thumb, “If God made it, then it’s probably good to eat it”. I don’t see any “Twinkie Trees” or “Snickers Bushes”, so stay away from too many sweets. Also, remember to drink A LOT of water. 3. No Smoking, Excess Drugs or Booze. In case you don’t have a television or have been napping for the last 50 years, cigarettes are bad for you. We have also have a drug epidemic in our country. Especially those distributed illegally. Make sure to consult with your doctor anytime you add or delete any drug. There’s nothing wrong with the ‘fruit of the vine’ but abusing alcohol, usually leads to problems. So everything in moderation. 4. Sleep. How healthy did you feel the last time you went to bed too late or woke up too early? Sleep is the time when the body repairs. Everyone has a slightly different number of hours. You know you’ve slept enough when

you wake up feeling rested. I am also a huge fan of naps. 5. PMA. Positive Mental Attitude. I submit to you that stress shortens lives. Next time you look in the mirror, be grateful that you can stand and even look in the mirror. Don’t focus on all that is wrong, see what is worth being grateful for. Smile. Really, look at your face and smile. Someone loves you and that’s a good reason to smile. We take so much for granted. We worry about things that usually never even happen. I know that life can be rough sometimes but nothing helps your health like a clear mind and a good attitude. Having a few good great friends doesn’t hurt either. Think about this, you made it this far. You may be older, but you are also smarter and more wise. Put that wisdom into action by remembering what’s important and reserving a little time to take care of yourself. The way I see it, “Everyone deserves to feel great!”

HEALTHY EATINGS

Eat Healthy at Home E

ven if you’ve mastered the art of a smart workday lunch and can pick the most nutritious items on a restaurant menu like a pro, eating healthy at home is an unexpected downfall many people face. When you find the chance to take a break from the busy pace of life and spend some time at home, it can be easy to slip into an all-indulgence mindset. Just remember that doesn’t have to mean going all-out on junk food. Enjoy the comforts of home and keep your eating on track with these helpful tips.

When you’re spending time with family It’s easy to catch a carefree spirit while you’re running the bases in an impromptu game of backyard baseball or being tempted by yet another imaginary dessert from the kiddie kitchen. When playtime winds down for dinner, there’s no reason for the fun to stop. Have kids get hands-on to help assemble a healthy meal everyone can enjoy. Skip the cutting, peeling and mess by using Dole Jarred Fruit to prepare salads, desserts and even main dishes that satisfy the whole family’s sweet tooth.

When you’re tackling chores From seasonal landscaping to the myriad projects you’ve been putting off, the list of chores around the house may seem never-ending. Remember to stay hydrated, especially if you’re working outdoors, and be

60 CSP_NOVEM_2016.indd 60

NOVEMBER 2016

sure you make time to eat, even if it’s just a quick bite to keep you fueled. Air-popped crackers and hummus is a smart alternative to chips and dip, or get your pick-meup from a handful of nuts and a serving of sweet, juicy fruit.

When you want to be a couch potato When a new TV season begins this fall, keep your guilty pleasure in check with quick, healthy dishes to enjoy as you binge watch your favorite shows. Keep your kitchen stocked with ingredients such as high quality, ready-toeat Dole Jarred Fruit so you can create quick and easy snacks with a serving of fruit in between episodes or during a commercial break. For more recipes you can enjoy at home, visit dolesunshine.com.

Sweet Treats Tickle your taste buds with these tricks that transform a kitchen staple like jarred fruit into a tasty treat: • Brighten up bland yogurt or frozen waffles with a serving of jarred fruit, such as sliced peaches or mandarin oranges. • Dip jarred pineapple chunks in melted chocolate and pop them in the freezer until hardened. • Top a serving of jarred tropical fruit with coconut flakes for an island escape.

FAMILY FEATURES

here is no time like the holiday season to get together and make memories with family and friends. Nothing brings people together quite like an elegant meal featuring a standout main dish – an exceptionally prepared entree that pays true homage to the season and all that you celebrate. This focal point dish should not only look delightful, but needs to also be a masterful presentation of mouthwatering flavor to keep your loved ones gathered around the table. Creating this perfect dish begins with choosing a premium cut of meat. Take the guesswork out of this year’s meal with a selection from Omaha Steaks, a leading provider of premium beef and gourmet foods. You can select the right cut of meat, flash-frozen to capture freshness and flavor at its peak, from the comfort of your home and have it delivered directly to your door. Invite elegance to your holiday table with this recipe for a succulent prime rib roast and find more inspiration at omahasteaks.com.

Prime Rib Roast with Rosemary and Thyme au Jus Serves: 10-14 Prep time: 30 minutes Total cook time: 3 hours, 50 minutes 6 pound Omaha Steaks Bone-In Prime Rib Roast 3 tablespoons olive oil 1/2 cup Omaha Steaks Private Reserve Rub 5 carrots, chopped into 1-inch pieces 5 celery stalks, chopped into 1-inch pieces 1 medium onion, chopped into 1-inch pieces 1 1/2 cups red wine 3 cups low-sodium beef broth 1 1/2 teaspoons fresh rosemary, finely chopped 1 1/2 teaspoons fresh thyme, finely chopped Thaw roast completely (3-4 days for 6-pound roast) in refrigerator before cooking. Heat oven to 250 F. Remove roast from packaging and pat dry with clean paper towels. Coat outside of roast with olive oil and liberally season with rub. Place carrots, celery and onion in even layer on bottom of large roasting pan to catch beef drippings.

Place roast in roasting pan on elevated wire rack. Sprinkle any leftover rub on roast to ensure generous coating. Roast until roast reaches an internal temperature of 125 F (for medium-rare), approximately 3 hours for 6-pound roast. Remove roast from oven and let rest 20-30 minutes. Meanwhile, heat broiler to high, with rack positioned for roast to sit about 4 inches from heating element. After roast has rested, place in oven under broiler, fat side up, about 5 minutes to brown roast. Remove pan from oven. Remove wire rack with roast from pan and place on carving board. Skim fat from pan, if necessary. Place pan on top of stove over two burners set on high heat. Add wine to pan drippings and cook over high heat until reduced by half, releasing drippings on bottom of pan with wooden spoon or whisk. Add beef broth and cook until reduced by half again. Whisk or stir in rosemary and thyme. Strain out vegetables and pour au jus into serving vessel. Slice roast and serve with au jus.

COMMUNITY NEWS

Presidential Candidate Hillary Clinton hosts rally in Coral Springs By Nicol JeNkiNs “Hillary! Hillary!” chanted a crowd of supporters at the Democratic Presidential candidate’s rally held last month at the Coral Springs Gymnasium. Hillary Clinton made a stop in Coral Springs and urged residents to register to vote. “Convince everyone you know to register to vote. Every person you register can make a difference,” said Clinton at the rally. During her speech, Clinton spoke to 2,396 attendees about her plans for enhancing the economy, by adding new jobs with rising income, such as jobs in infrastructure, advanced manufacturing, innovation and technology and clean renewable energy. “My opponent’s only infrastructure plan is to build a wall. I love how he went down to Mexico and he choked. He’s sitting with the President of Mexico and doesn’t even bring it up,” said Clinton. Clinton concluded, “I am excited and optimistic about our country. We will never get anything done if we feel bad and try to blame somebody. We need to lift ourselves up and roll up our sleeves and get to work, and make sure the future is what it should be for our country. And while we are doing that we need to make sure our country is safe, and America provides strong leadership across our country.”

Clinton also addressed her Republican opponent, Donald Trump, and the debate, stating, “I think it is very clear that there are two very different choices for our country, based on two very different visions of the type of America we want to have. My view is we are already great, and if we work together we will become even greater in the years ahead. I believe America is an exceptional nation. My opponent believes America is in decline. I’ve never heard such a dark and terrible image of our country coming from someone running to be President of the United States.” She mentioned Trump’s tweet against a former Miss Universe. “His latest Twitter meltdown proves he is unhinged. It proves yet again that he is unfit to be the President.”

Coral Springs resident Kevin Addison believes Clinton will be our next President. “I believe history is in the making and Hillary Clinton will be the first female President of the United States. Her work over the years has proven that she will be the best choice; and her being here in Coral Springs has put the City on the map.”

Clinton continued her speech stating that diversity in our country is one of our national assets. She plans to increase service opportunities through expanding the Peace Corps and AmeriCorps. “America is great because America is good; and we can never forget that.”

Protestors, who were standing outside holding Trump for President signs, however, disagreed. “Hillary has been in power for 30 years and has done nothing for our country. Trump will be a great leader and will create jobs,” said Irma Robinson.

She also plans to implement programs focused on increasing minimum wage, equal pay for women and helping small businesses. “My father owned a small business and he made a lot of sacrifice and worked really hard to give us a strong middle class life. I’m really proud of that. We need to do more to get small business started and growing throughout Broward County and South Florida. As we grow the economy, we have to make it fairer. I want prosperity to reach everybody, not just the privileged few. We are going to raise the minimum wage. Two-thirds of minimum wage workers are women who are supporting children. We deserve better. We are going to guarantee equal pay for women.”

Local politicians showed up in support of having a Presidential candidate speak in the City.

68 CSP_NOVEM_2016.indd 68

NOVEMBER 2016

Her plans for an affordable college education, including tuition free and debt free college, were also highlighted. “What can we do to make sure more young people get a college education. If you are in a family that makes less than $125,000, you will not pay tuition to go to a public college or university. And if you make more than that, you will pay for what you can afford but you will not have to borrow money because it will be debt free. I also believe a four year college degree should not leave you mired in debt. We will help you finance your debt and get the interest rates down. And we need to make sure community colleges are free.”

“It was great for Northwest Broward, Coral Springs, Parkland, and Tamarac, to have her here with lots of energy. I think she is going to turn out the vote in Broward County,” said Parkland Mayor Michael Udine. “There was an absolute packed house of screaming Coral Springs residents and friends to welcome our next President, Hillary Clinton, to town! It was wonderful to see so many fired up voters ready to make sure we win in November!” said Coral Springs Vice Mayor Dan Daley.

WHY YOU SHOULD USE A REAL ESTATE AGENT WHEN BUYING A NEW CONSTRUCTION PROPERTY BY: JEFF GOULD

Vanessa D’Souza P.A. 954-658-9993 Email: Vanessa@vantagerealtygroupfl.com Website: www.vantagerealtygroupfl.com

Purchasing new construction is usually more complicated and intimidating than buying a resale home. It is important with a newhome purchase that a buyer hire a real estate agent to represent them in this process. This agent should be a local expert and have experience with newly constructed homes. Builder contracts and the building process is different from what most real estate agents deal

with on a daily basis, so having new construction experience is important. As a real estate agent who specializes in an area with a lot of new construction, buyers ask me all the time if they can use a real estate agent when they are purchasing new construction. The answer is yes. In general, builders’ model homes are staffed by agents who work directly for and represent the builder. A buyer also needs to have a real estate agent who represents them and looks after their best interests. Keep in mind that most builders will require that the real estate agent accompany and register the buyer on

their first visit to the builder’s model home or community. Make sure your buyers don’t just “stop by” the newhome community without you. If they do, they could lose the opportunity to have their own representation. When is the best time to buy? A lot of the national builders are publicly traded companies. They need to meet sales goals and answer to the shareholders of that company. For that reason, toward the end of a quarter, builders tend to be more aggressive with their incentives in order to meet these sales goals. The December holiday season is another great time to buy. Most of the country is out shopping and traveling to see family. Very few people shop for homes this time of the year. For that reason, ’tis the season to find some great incentives to purchase a new home.

Both Nubia and I have an inventory list of homes in the Broward, Dade, and West Palm Beach areas in which the builders are offering current incentives starting anywhere from $18,000-$22,000 towards closing costs! These incentives and prices are subject to change so hurry and give us a call. You will not be disappointed!

It’s Their Business

BY JOSEPH BUCHINO

The Snowbirds Are Coming!! It’s that time of year again. The traffic is more congested, lines are longer at grocery stores, restaurants are packed by 6pm… The winter visitors, aka “snowbirds”, are arriving in full force! This happens every year in Florida and who could blame them? If I lived up north, I would also make the trip down here to beat the cold. The winter visitors bring a lot of business with them. One business in particular that seems to stay busy during the season is the emergency restoration business. Every year during this season, our mold remediation workload seems to double for the months of November and December. This is due to a number of things. I would say the majority of our mold remediation work is related to the A/C unit. Proper maintenance of an A/C unit is very important, especially in Florida where they run all year long. Here are some tips to save you money and help prevent any damage to your property: - Make sure you have someone physically checking on your property at least once a month. A good property manager or a friend can do this. Some of the best property managers will go as far as to send you updated pictures of your property.

- One of the best investments I made was a NEST Thermostat. It is referred to as a “learning thermostat” because it can create a schedule, its proven to save energy, and you can control it from a smart phone. I highly suggest investing in the NEST thermostat or one similar to it. - Flush out you’re A/C drain line before you leave for an extended period of time. This will save you a lot of heart ache in the long run. Nothing worse than arriving at your home, A/C is working properly, but you have water damage due to a clogged drain line. - I always suggest having you’re A/C coils cleaned. Your A/C has been running all year long and probably hasn’t had the filter changed. If your filter hasn’t been changed

These are just suggestions, as I am not a licensed A/C technician. These are tips that I have picked up over my tenure and tips I’ve utilize. If you have any questions concerning air conditioning, I recommend you talk to a reputable A/C company. I am a licensed restoration expert. I deal with any and all kinds of water mitigation, mold remediation, fire/smoke and biohazard/trauma clean up. My company, Restoration 1 – Parkland, works in the tri county area and we give free mold inspections and evaluations. If you have any questions, please feel free to call us at 1-888-959-0889 or you can also check us out at www.restoration1.com/parkland. Joseph Buchino spent 13 years in the Army. Four of them with the 82nd Airborne and nine of them as a Green Beret in 1st Special Forces Group (Airborne). He is the proud owner of Restoration 1 – Parkland. If you have any questions, please call 954-592-3905 or go to www.restoration1. com/parkland

- You can prevent mold from developing on your property by using a programmable thermostat. Have it programmed to run your AC at 72° for two hours in the morning and 85° the rest of the time. This will prevent mold by removing moisture from the air during cooler hours.

Listening Works! I dedicate this article to my unparalleled mother, Toby Litt. Her work as a communication specialist and spiritual guide continues to power and inspire me every day. The name of her company was Listening Works. Few of us have been taught to listen because so few of us have been listened to. First as children, then as adults… we live in a society of impatience, distraction, of multi-tasking and self-serving agendas. We are in such need to be heard, to share what we have to say, to explain our side of the argument-- to show what we know. We enter conversations with our point or angle in mind. Sometimes it’s as if you let the other person speak just so you can get your turn to say what you need to say. To be right or to win. When we don’t listen, we all lose. Did you know that most conflicts and challenges we experience are caused by ineffective listening which translates into miscommunication? Yup, it’s true! So how do you know what kind of listener you are? Let’s take a look at the three levels of listening: 1. Subjective Listening: Also known as “selfish listening” because the listening is based on the agenda and needs of the listener. Whatever is said is heard through the experience of the listener. This type of listening rarely satisfies the person who is speaking. Speaker: I’m so upset that I missed my son’s soccer game. Listener: Yeah, I missed my daughter’s play once and I felt awful. 2. Objective Listening: Also known as “selfless listening” because the listening is completely focused on the speaker. There are no thoughts about how it relates personally to the listener and can be very effective. It allows the speaker to feel heard.

www.CityNewsMagaziNe.CoM

CSP_NOVEM_2016.indd 79

Speaker: I’m so upset that I missed my son’s soccer game. Listener: Seems like you’re really disappointed. 3. Intuitive Listening: Also known as “powerful listening” because the listener is hearing all components and intuitively connecting with the speaker’s real message. The listener is not only paying attention to the words, but also tone, emotion, and energy, as well as what is not being said. This level of listening creates the deepest connection with the speaker. Speaker: I’m so upset that I missed my son’s soccer game. Listener: Being so upset is totally understandable. It seems like like you’re feeling really down on yourself about it and what it may mean about everything you are trying to balance right now. In life, we all listen at all the levels. After all, you’re human. But by being more aware, you can take steps to reach for those deeper levels. I will say this, to powerfully listen is to hear with the intention to understand. To powerfully listen we must be silent, we must be present in the moment, we must pay attention, we must be curious, we must be open-minded and vulnerable. And most importantly, we must kick our EGO to the curb. The Litt Factor helps individuals and organizations ignite their power to achieve their highest potential. The Friendship Initiative and the City of Parkland Announce Construction of Phase 1 of Friendship Park, The Nation’s First Inclusive Community Park The Friendship Initiative, a Parkland based 501(c)(3) charitable organization, and the City of Parkland, after years of planning and design will be implementing the first phase of construction of the redesign of Terramar Park (to be renamed Friendship Park) in Parkland. The global landscape architecture firm, EDSA, is the design consultant. According to Parkland City Commissioner ChristIne Hunschofsky, an early supporter and voice for Friendship Park, “I am absolutely thrilled that the City of Parkland will break ground on Phase 1 of Friendship Park. From day one I have been a huge advocate of The Friendship Initiative’s vision to build the first ever all-inclusive park right here in our City. This is a tremendous milestone for The Friendship Initiative and more importantly, for our diverse and growing community.” Jeb Niewood, a Parkland resident and the founder and president of The Friendship Initiative, states, “We have a great relationship with the City of Parkland and this is the culmination of a four-year dialogue and partnership with the city. With the planned construction of Phase 1, it is the end of the beginning of our shared journey. We believe that Friendship Park will be the model for all future community parks throughout the nation.” The first phase of construction, with a ground breaking scheduled for late 2016, is the installation of multi-use fields with a landscaped perimeter including a single point of entry and exit to insure the safety of all children. The city’s 5-year plan also includes the construction of Phase 2 which is the installation of basketball courts including the innovative Bankshot Basketball. Bankshot Basketball is an inclusive activity where players do not play against one another but along-side one another. Bankshot Sports are non-exclusionary, accommodating wheelchair players, the physically and cognitively challenged, grandparents, children and all people. At full construction, Friendship Park will include: Double wide walkways and pathways allowing for wheelchairs, walkers and adaptive bicycles; a sensory garden that engages each of the senses within a larger green landscaped area with a specific theme and with wide boardwalks running through it; large fully adaptive state of the art playground; a great lawn for events and productions; sculptured art in the park area; convenient parking provided for each element of the park Started in 2011, the mission of The Friendship Initiative (TFI) is to develop and growprograms which enable children with special needs and typical children to learn from each other and connect as friends and to build the nation’s first, totally inclusive community park. TFI is committed to raising the funds necessary to support this mission. For more information about The Friendship Initiative and Friendship Park please contact Jeb Niewood at Jeb@thefriendshipinitiative.org or by calling Jeb at 954-464-6078 and visit its web page at: www.thefriendshipinitiative.org and The Friendship Initiative Facebook page.
