Enjoy The Magazine

So many people get involved with carrying grudges and having these moral battles with people, where they cast themselves as the righteous and the other guy is the dirtbag. They waste tons of energy on it, create all kinds of darkness around themselves and the other person. It gets you nothing.

FINANCIAL / TAX ADVICE LEGALLY SPEAKING RoBERt SpIELmaN, Cpa, JD BYLINE HERE

Time For 2016/2017 Planning

Now that we are in November, most of us can effectively project what our 2016 income tax picture will look like. Therefore, November and December are the prime months for doing year-end 2016 planning. When doing your year-end planning, it is essential to think ahead to 2017, so strategies can be implemented that not only reduce your 2016 tax liability, but potentially reduce your 2017 liability. Our objective is to adopt a plan that creates a net tax savings, considering the two tax years together. For individual tax planning, you must account for all of your income and deductions to date and then project your income and deductions through the end of the year. No one tax checklist for year-end planning can ever be fully applicable to everyone. Below are just a few planning ideas to consider when you do your year-end 2016 planning: 1.Consider family tax planning to determine whether you can shift income to family members in lower tax brackets. 2.If you can, make gifts of up to $14,000 per person Federal gift tax free. Making gifts to children enables them to earn income, which may be subject to a significantly lower level of income taxation. 3.Carefully review your business activities, especially activities flowing to you from Schedule K-1’s, to maximize your 2016 tax position. 4.Review investments to determine if you have unrealized capital losses, which may be recognized to offset capital gains already recognized. Review any investment interest expense limitation. 5.Bunch up your itemized deductions if you are close to being able to utilize them after considering all phase-outs. If you might not be able to utilize them, consider moving them to 2017. 6.Review 2017 to determine if it makes sense to accelerate income into 2016 or defer expenses into 2017. If you need to accelerate income, consider selling U.S. savings bonds, recognize capital gains, accelerate wages or take distributions

from trusts that bring along income. Expenses that can be deferred include paying mortgage interest, real estate tax, medical expenses, State income taxes, charitable donations, and miscellaneous deductions such as legal, accounting, and investment management fees. 7. Have you fully funded your retirement accounts? If you have not made your required minimum distribution from your retirement plan, do so before the end of the year. If you reached aged 70 ½ this year, you may delay your first withdrawal until next year, so long as it is made before April 1. Consider your 2016 and 2017 marginal tax brackets when making this decision. Consider whether making a charitable contribution from your retirement plan makes sense. 8. Maximize the use of education benefits and credits within the family. Consider Section 529 Plans and determine if you can benefit from education credits or if they are better utilized by the student. If students can utilize the credits, they should recognize income to the extent a credit can be monetized. 9.Review your withholdings and estimated tax payments to insure you will not be subject to underpayment penalties. Year-end tax planning can be complex and is often based upon assumptions for the succeeding tax year. However, if you gather all your information, review your 2015 return, and consider all of your options, meaningful tax savings can be achieved. Avoid the “should’ve’s” and “could’ve’s” by planning now and taking the appropriate action steps before yearend. This article provides generalized tax and financial information for educational purposes only. It does not provide any personalized tax, investment, legal, or other business or professional advice. Only a Crash Dummy Would Let Their Neck or Back Heal Crooked  The sudden jarring effects of an auto impact can injure the spine, discs and nerves. These types of traumas often cause Spinal Compression Syndrome or SCS. SCS changes the normal function of the spine resulting in continuous pressured spinal gliding. It causes pain, degeneration, disc disease, arthritis and more.  The most effective way of treating SCS is the Robotic-ATT. The therapy slowly and gently relieves chronic spinal pressure as it improves natural gliding. It is very effective for many of the pain complaints that bring patients to their doctor.  If you’ve had an accident, and you are experiencing any of the symptoms listed below, you could have spinal compression syndrome.  We invite you to call our office and schedule a no obligation consultation and screening. What are lipotropic injections? Lipotropic injections are a concoction of essential amino acids choline, methionine, and inositol combined with vitamins B6 and B12. This combination of amino acids and vitamins has so many benefits for the body. Choline, an essential nutrient, actively reduces fat in the liver, decreasing chances of heart disease. Methionine, an amino acid responsible for lowering cholesterol and fat reduction in the body, is not produced in our bodies. Inositol is responsible for metabolizing fats and helping transfer those fats to the bloodstream. Inositol also regulates serotonin and insulin in our bodies. This increases mood and decreases hunger. Vitamins B6 and B12 are added to elevate mood, to assist in lipid metabolism, and to increase energy. Mesolift is a type of mesotherapy that is a safe, natural alternative to invasive cosmetic procedures. The Mesolift process delivers vitamins, minerals and amino acids directly into the skin to nourish and rejuvenate, promote production of collagen and elastin, and stimulate your metabolism. As your skin ages, circulation decreases, and the resulting reduction of oxygen and nutrients hinders your body’s ability to flush out toxins. This is what drives premature aging and causes the skin to develop an ashen appearance. The mesolift approach treats aging, sagging, sun damaged skin as well as wrinkles in the face and neck. Mesolift helps to remove free radical damage and tighten loose skin. The effects rejuvenate the face, eyelids, neck without the unnatural appearance and painful recovery of surgical alternatives. After treatment, patients commonly describe their skin as looking rested, radiant, glowing and firmer. Mesotherapy can be used as a supplement, or an alternative, to many anti-aging regimens, including botox, laser resurfacing, peels, antioxidants, topical creams and facelifts. Mesolift is not indicated for patients prone to keloid, history of strokes, severe heart disease, history of severe bleeding disorder or history of recent cancer. These procedures are great for any men or women who want to reduce the look of wrinkles on the neck and face or drop weight. It is simple, quick and virtually painless with no recovery time. COMMUNITY NEWS

Taravella Deca Promotes Crisis Text Line Throughout Broward County Schools To Help Students Experiencing Mental Health Crises J.P. Taravella DECA has organized a community service project to encourage crisis prevention through texting among Broward County teens. The project, called “Here 2 Help,” promotes Crisis Text Line, a national non-profit organization that provides free mental health support 24/7 with trained Crisis Counselors. Taravella DECA aims to increase the awareness of Crisis Text Line through a variety of initiatives, starting with a school-wide assembly on November 9th to educate Taravella teens; JPT DECA is also engaged in efforts to have the School Board of Broward County promote Crisis Text Line to all middle and high schools. By texting “Hello” to 741741 (the Crisis Text Line number), trained volunteers can take a person in crisis from a “hot” moment to a “cool” moment, and create a plan to help texters by referring them to local resources. The organization was founded in 2013, and since then, has responded to over 20 million messages. JPT DECA aims to ensure that every student at J.P. Taravella – and in fact in Broward County -- knows about this important, potentially life-saving resource. 2 Understanding what Crisis Text Line is and how to connect, students may use it themselves, or share the number with a friend or family member in crisis; the results are that more people get the help they need, averting many of the sad outcomes that occur when people are in crisis and don’t know what to do. For more information on Crisis Text Line, please visit their website at http://www.crisistextline. org/. Making Every Student at Taravella an Ambassador for Crisis Text Line To promote Crisis Text Line at the school level, Taravella DECA will host a variety of student activities on November 9th and 10th, and will create a lasting presence throughout the campus for Crisis Text Line. Starting with a school-wide assembly at 9:20 a.m. on November 9th, JPT DECA will educate students about Crisis Text Line and its services, which are free (standard texting rates apply), confidential, and can make a difference to a person who is in crisis. JPT DECA members want to ensure that students know that they can easily use these resources themselves or share with a friend in crisis. JPT DECA will also sponsor the installation of permanent signs that will be placed at strategic locations throughout the campus to remind students to use Crisis Text Line when in need. Implementing Crisis Text Line in Every Broward County School Another goal of the Here 2 Help chapter project is to promote Crisis Text Line at the County level. Taravella DECA is working with the Broward County School Board to explore the possibility of promoting Crisis Text Line to all middle and high schools in Broward. School Board support staff are very interested in the initiative and are helping with the steps needed for County-wide adoption. More Awareness of Crisis Text Line Creates the Need for More Volunteers As DECA’s Here 2 Help project generates awareness of Crisis Text Line, the non-profit organization will need

In the next two years, the organization plans to grow to more than 4,000 Crisis Counselors, and JPT DECA is working to contribute to this goal. The project includes reaching out to various organizations in Coral Springs and throughout Broward County, including mental health organizations, retired teachers and veterans, and local fire departments. In fact, the Coral Springs Fire Department has invited Taravella DECA members to address its firefighters

about the possibility of volunteering for Crisis Text Line. The volunteer process includes filling out a 30-minute application, consenting to a background check, and completing a 34-hour online training session. Volunteers commit to help out four hours a week for one year. Coral Springs Police give back this holiday season By Nicol JeNkiNs

Coral Springs police are heroes every day of the year, but this holiday season local children will look up to them even more. Members of the Coral Springs Police Department will turn into Santa Claus and deliver holiday toys and cheer to less fortunate children who live in the City. The Department is hosting their Annual Coral Springs Police Toy Drive. Unwrapped toys can be dropped off through December 16th at the Coral Springs City Hall lobby, located at 9551 W Sample Road. They are collecting toys including: sporting equipment (basketballs, footballs, soccer balls); themed toys: Disney Frozen, Teenage Ninja Turtles, Star Wars, Legos, Barbie, Art or Jewelry Kits, Board Games, and Infant and Toddler Toys (we collect for toddler to teens); toy guns and stuffed animals are not accepted. All toys that are collected will be distributed to children identified by Coral Springs schools, through local School Resource Officers, as part of the Angel Tree Delivery. “Our officers visit the homes of these children and deliver toys in the days leading up to Christmas. In addition, we do what we call “Holiday Jump Outs.” Our officers drive to under-served areas of our city and jump out at parks and apartment complexes and provide children with toys,” said Lynne Martzall, Community Involvement Coordinator for Coral Springs Police.

“Too often, children have interactions with law enforcement due to domestic-related situations or when criminal activity had taken place in their home or neighborhood. In an effort to not only brighten the holidays for children who may go without holiday toys, we wanted to show children that police officers are trusted adults and that they care,” added Martzall.

The Coral Springs Police Toy Drive was started three years ago and has grown over the years.

Local children look forward to seeing the police officers and receiving the toys during the holidays.

“We started collecting toys for the toy drive three years ago. We had always had an Angel Tree program, where our own personnel would buy gifts, but we wanted to expand it and so many of our local businesses, school clubs, religious organizations wanted to be a part of it,” said Martzall.

“Children who we have provided gifts to previously always remind officers of the time they came to their home; and have already begun asking their School Resource Officers when they will see the gift-giving police officers again this year. We enjoy a positive relationship with all members of our community and these gift-giving events solidify that relationship,” said Martzall.

The goal of the toy drive is to brighten the holidays for children, while improving relations with the community. The toy drive program is one of the community-oriented policing initiatives to build bridges with the youth in our local community.

18

DECEMBER 2016

Children and their families who benefit from these programs are grateful and come to better understand that police officers really do care.

Give a holiday toy this year and brighten a child’s holidays!

(Family Features) From running his workshop to delivering toys around the world, the holiday season is a busy time for Santa. To keep himself going, Saint Nick relies on some essential gadgets to stay connected, organized and entertained throughout the holidays. This year, make your own holidays a little less hectic or someone else’s holiday a little more merry. With the help of U.S. Cellular, you can give some of Santa’s favorite gadgets. Drones: To keep an eye on who’s been naughty or nice, Santa depends on his Parrot Mini-Drone Rolling Spider. The Spider flies smoothly in all directions with its sophisticated stabilizing autopilot system, and a free app with touch controls makes it easy to pilot. Thanks to the “swipe” control feature, you can execute rapid, agile aerobatics, including 90 degree and 180 degree turns, as well as forward, backward and sideways flips. An embedded vertical mini-camera lets you take snapshots from the unique vantage point.

DECEMBER 2016

Mobile devices: Santa’s Apple iPhone 7 and Samsung Galaxy S7 help him stay connected, organized and entertained. With the iPhone’s new and advanced camera system, you’ll be able to capture memories all season long, and immersive stereo speakers will have you rockin’ around the Christmas tree – all with the strongest battery life ever in an iPhone. If admiring holiday lights is a tradition you hold dear, you’ll appreciate the Galaxy S7’s exceptional low-light image capture, and the smartphone’s expandable memory makes it easy to grab all the photos and videos you can snap. Alarm systems: While Santa is away delivering presents around the world, the Nest Cam provides home security. A crisp, clear, high-quality glass lens, image sensor and 8x digital clear zoom let you see every detail in full 1080p HD right on your phone, where you can also receive alerts so you know if creatures start stirring – perhaps a jolly old elf? The camera allows you to both talk and listen, and with eight infrared LED, you can see the whole room, even when the night is dark.

Music: What’s a sleigh ride without Christmas music? Santa jingles all the way with the UE Roll 2 Bluetooth Speaker. The speaker pumps out crisp sound with deep bass in every direction to spread holiday cheer all around. A rechargeable lithium-ion battery allows for up to nine hours of playtime, so you can keep the festivities going strong late into the night. Using the UE Roll app, you can take advantage of additional features to tune it, alarm it, personalize it and double up the sound by pairing with another UE speaker. Health trackers: After all the countless cookies and glasses of milk, Santa takes charge of his health with the Samsung Gear S2 smartwatch. The built-in S Health app empowers your active lifestyle and continuously challenges you to practice healthy habits. Effortless navigation, personalization options and features like calendar notifications make it easier than ever to keep everything you need at your fingertips.

Wireless Bluetooth: Santa relies on the Plantronics Voyager Legend Bluetooth Headset to communicate with his elves while he navigates the world on his sleigh. The device intuitively directs calls to phone or headset, pauses music for incoming calls and allows you to automatically answer by simply placing the headset on your ear. Dual-microphone noisecancelling technology retains the natural sound of your voice while three layers of WindSmart technology help block intrusive noises. Keep up with loved ones in comfort this holiday season with a pivoting mic boom that lets you wear the headset on either ear. Santa doesn’t have to be the only ultimate gift giver. You can find the items that keep Santa super-charged during the busiest time of the year at USCellular.com, where you can also locate a store near you.

WISHING EVERYONE A JOYOUS AND LOVE FILLED HOLIDAY SEASON To move or remodel, that is the question With so many homeowners locked in at extremely low interest rates many are choosing to remodel their existing homes instead of move. That has also meant a lower supply of homes available for firsttime buyers. The question many people are facing is whether or not they should spend the money remodeling, or take advantage of their increased equity and buy their long-term dream home. Space and location are typically the deciding factors when considering a move.

4 Trends to Shape Real Estate in 2017

2017 promises to be an interesting year in real estate. Below are four promising trends that will shape the market this upcoming year. Millennials rising from the basements As millennials get older, they are increasing home ownership rates faster than in previous years, according to research from Fannie Mae. Millennials have overtaken

baby boomers as the largest generation in the U.S. and many of them entered their post-college years during one of the toughest economic periods in decades. For years we have heard the joke about the number of them living at home with their parents. For a while this was true, but the economy has improved now and with jobs seemingly more abundant, millennials are coming to the real estate market. Interest rates rise Will rates go up? This question will push

many people into the buying decision. The reality is, this has been the same question at the end of each of the last three years, but eventually they have to go up…right? Not necessarily. In fact, we may experience low rates for many years to come. They may rise, but the rise is likely to be gradual overall to keep the economy from hitting another recession. The fear of high rates will continue to create a sense of urgency as many people look for a better option. The low rates mean it is still cheaper to buy than rent in many large real estate markets.

“But I don’t want to be homeless” The tight supply of homes in many hot markets is making the stress of buying and selling higher than normal. The limited number of homes and a competitive environment means that many homeowners are afraid to sell for fear of having no home to buy. Many sellers are looking for noncontingent offers, meaning the buyers do not have a home to sell. Even if their home is under contract they might get passed over for a buyer without a home to sell. This increased pressure makes many potential home sellers decide to stay put. This gap will likely keep inventories low and continue to push prices higher. There are so many factors—nationally and locally—that can affect the real estate market. Considering all factors for your real estate market and larger trends will help you make the best informed decision.

How do you handle a situation that involves 6 family members parking themselves in your home for 8 weeks? I have been married a little over a year now and for the second holiday season my wife’s family is coming to visit. I like her family and don’t really mind them coming. The problem is that we have a small house, and for two months during the holidays they take over. People are sleeping and leaving stuff everywhere and to make matters worse we pay all the bills for food and entertainment while they are here. Other people also come over to visit and are so loud late into the night. My wife isn’t freaked out like I am and of course looks forward to them all coming. It is so exhausting for me that I have trouble concentrating at work and when I get home I admit I am in a foul mood which ends up causing some type of argument with my wife. Last year left some painful memories for both of us. I don’t want to have a repeat of last year and I have absolutely no idea how to stop the inevitable from happening. We just found out she is pregnant and now I even worry about next year and how that will work with the baby here. I love my wife and like her family but I think this is out of control. What do I do?

Dear J.R.,

- J.R., Parkland

Our goal as therapists is to “listen” to what our clients say in a way that helps to untangle their concerns and where they are stuck. This is what we “heard from your letter”. Your letter talks a great deal about “lack of control” over your own space and money. If we understand you correctly what you are really looking for is some balance. Too many relatives are coming for too long a period and are too disruptive to your daily life which is leaving you feeling off balance, yes? If our theory is correct then the next step is to figure out how to make a change that allows them to visit AND gives you the ability to feel that you have some control back in your life. The key issue here starts with having a sincere conversation with your wife. Make it clear that it is the lack of boundaries around the visit that creates the problem for you, not the people. Once she feels safe that her family is welcomed in the home you have built together, you can then begin to collaborate to find solutions to the issues that are creating the conflict. For instance, would it be possible for the family to sleep at others homes for at least some of the visit? Also, perhaps you AND your wife can devise some temporary system that would make room for everyone’s personal items so “things aren’t everywhere”. Finally, the financial issue should to be discussed. You and your wife are now expecting a baby and financially need to decide on a budget that you both can feel comfortable with regarding entertaining the family. See what is different when you approach this issue proactively in a way that says to your wife you are a team and both have a voice. If you still are stuck, we suggest that you and your wife schedule an appointment for a session together to help you develop the tools you will need to find solutions. Best - Karen and Debbie

LEGALLY SPEAKING BY ALAN J. REINDFELD, ESQ

Who inherits what Jose Fernandez left his family after his tragic death? Jose Fernandez, star pitcher for the Miami Marlins, died tragically on September 25, 2016 in a boating accident. He lef t behind a girlfriend who was pregnant with his soon -to - be f irst child. As more facts are revealed, it appears that he lef t a Last Will & Testament naming his mother as his sole benef iciar y. Does this mean that an af ter- born child can be automatic ally disinherited? Well, let ’s see what Florida law has to say about this mat ter. For tunately, Florida Statute §732.302 (the so - called “ Pretermit ted Child” statute) was created to specif ically address this issue. The law essentially states that a child born af ter a testator (or parent, in this c ase) makes a will, the child has the right to receive his or her share from the deceased parent ’s estate as if the parent had died without leaving a will, or intestate. Of course, there are exceptions to the rule. The child will not receive his or her share if the deceased parent intentionally omit ted the child under the will or the parent had other children during the execution of the will and lef t substantially all the estate assets to the other parent of the pretermit ted child and that other parent sur vived the deceased parent.

the time of his death, his child would be entitled to receive 10 0% of his estate, unless, of course, he intentionally omit ted providing for his child under his will or he lef t substantially all his assets to his girlfriend (which according to news repor ts, points to the c ontrar y). This is one of those ex tremely rare areas where Statute has already been done to cover scenarios which c annot usually be foreseen. The negatives here, depending on his Will, is whether a Guardianship will have to be set up to manage the assets, or whether there are other alternative arrangements out there. Hopefully, his Last Will & Testament may have contained a Standby Trust provision, so that his child will not inherit all monies at 18 years of age. A standby Trust would possibly allow monies to be disbursed at later periods and for specif ic instances, such as health, maintenance and suppor t. If you would like to obtain more information on succession laws in the State of Florida, you may contact the Law O f f ices of Reinfeld & Cabrera.

So what does this mean? It means that if Jose Fernandez’s unborn child is born alive and well, then his child c ould inherit any and all assets that he may have owned at the time of his death. Given that Jose Fernandez was not married at

REAL ESTATE BY ANDI WITES

In my world, I find that average just does not cut it!

A

verage is not the way to value a home, as in, “Average Price per Square Foot”. And of course, here is my pitch and then I will not say another word, …. who wants an average Real Estate Agent? Average, just does not give a good description of anything; people, places or things! And this is my point, you cannot arrive at a good list price or probable sale price for a home by simply taking the average price per square foot in a residential subdivision. Therefore, when you go to web sites to find an “estimate” of your home’s value, you can very misled. The County Property Appraisers office must do a lot of averaging to arrive at taxable value, that is because they cannot possibly know the features of each home that has sold. When doing a market analysis to determine a home’s value, it is important to adjust for features. What features will be adjusted to determine sale price within a subdivision? Similar to what a Licensed Fee Appraiser does, one of the first features that needs to be considered by the Realtor preparing the analysis, is the lot. When a neighborhood is first developed the sale price of the home is determined in part by the location of the lot, i.e. dry lot, water lot, perimeter lot, oversized lot.

For example, a home in one popular resale subdivision on a dry lot has an average price per square foot of $173 while across the street, a home on a golf or water view lot averages $189. And too, there is what I call, the point of diminishing return, and that is size. The smallest home in a subdivision will sell for more per square foot than one much larger. In this same subdivision, a home with 6100 square foot of living space on a golf view lot sold for $146 a square foot. Updates and upgrades will contribute to the price per square foot of list and sell price. The price can be affected by the age of roof and the age of kitchen, baths, floors and even air conditioning systems. That is why, if you need new components a year or so before a planned relocation, it might be a good investment and replace them for your own use, enjoyment and resale value versus putting it off. Buyers have so many expenses when moving such as down payments, closing costs, and moving costs, that updating and upgrading can break the budget. Paying more for a home with improvements, gives the buyer the ability to pay for them in the mortgage, not cash out of pocket. Other contributing factors will be, bedroom, bath and garage count. And finally, hurricane protection or

impact glass can contribute to a higher sale price. It is so important not to be misguided by average price per square foot on web sites or reports, unless the process is broken down by a local Realtor or Fee Appraiser, to properly value the features and truly compare “like properties” A Realtor will do your analysis without charge or obligation. Now you know what should be taken into consideration when you see Estimates, Zestimates or Averages. And you will not be misled by web sites and reports that lump together way too many homes in one area that are similar but not equal.

With the holiday season now in full swing, let’s all be honest with ourselves: we’re overindulging. While that may be true, we hear again and again that patients are ready to make a change NEXT month, and they spend January working out… before their routine falls to the wayside. That’s why we’re encouraging you to come up with a plan NOW to decide if liposuction is the right method for you. Myth #1: You have to be overweight to get liposuction. It doesn’t do any good for the last few pounds. FALSE! In fact, there does come a point as to how much fat can be removed with liposuction alone, and this procedure works best to sculpt and get rid of stubborn fat instead of a weight loss solution. Obese patients are recommended to lose a certain amount of weight first, depending on their individual cases, and then use liposuction to get rid of the last stubborn few fat cells that don’t seem to want to budge. Myth #2: Liposuction is only for your belly area. FALSE! Although this is one of the most popular areas, it’s common for patients to want to remove fat from other stubborn areas, like their upper arms and the everhated double chin. Surgeons are able to do multiple areas at once, as it’s easier when a patient is already sedated instead of having them come back a second time months later, but we have to keep in mind there are limits as to how much fat can in fact be taken out. Myth #3: There’s nothing you can do about your flat behind besides squats. FALSE! Liposuction is often combined with a Brazilian Butt Lift, known as a BBL or Fat Transfer. When fat is removed, your body’s own fat can be transferred to the buttocks area to give you the plump, lifted booty you’ve been craving. Myth #4: Liposuction takes away the loose skin around your belly area or your wobbly turkey neck.

FALSE… but do not fear! If that’s something that’s a concern to you, you may be a candidate for a tummy tuck or neck lift instead. However, before deciding, consult with a practice that’s run by a board certified plastic surgeon, like Pierini Esthetic Surgery and Pierini: A Solution For Beauty, to decide EXACTLY what will benefit you instead of you trying to figure it out at home. Trust us: your doctor knows far more than Dr. Google. Myth #5: Liposuction is only for woman. FALSE! Men tend to get the “tire” around their waist, too, especially once they’re no longer in their youthful twenties. There are amazing results with the liposuction “six pack surgery” for our patients as well. Believe it or not men that are fit and healthy can still have stubborn fat and may not be able to reach their goal of having a six pack; special techniques like abdominal etching through liposuction can be performed to help patients get the body they desire. Myth #6: There’s too much downtime after liposuction for me to think about it. FALSE! While yes, patients do have to be careful to follow instructions, we tell most of our liposuction patients they can return to work within a few days, and resume normal activity within two weeks. Of course, this doesn’t mean returning back to the construction site for 12-hour days of manual labor, or going back to you Crossfit workouts, but mostly regular activity can indeed be resumed. There are minor restrictions, including lifting heavy weights or extraneous physical work within the first couple of months after surgery. Whether you’re ready to get surgery over the holidays or want to construct a plan for 2017, schedule a consult to get on the right track. Remember, a plan is the first step to a better you! Pierini Esthetic Surgery, located in Doral, and Pierini: A Solution For Beauty, located in Tamarac, offer a variety of cosmetic and aesthetic services, ranging from rhinoplasty to the non-surgical nose job, from liposuction to the BBL (Brazilian Butt Lift), and everything in between. Superintendent Robert W. Runcie Honored by NABSE as 2016 Superintendent of the Year Congratulations to Broward County Public Schools Superintendent Robert W. Runcie for being recognized by the National Alliance of Black School Educators (NABSE) with its 2016 NABSE Joseph E. Hill Superintendent of the Year award. The award honors school district superintendents who have demonstrated a quality of leadership that resulted in significant positive outcomes for students of African descent. Superintendent Runcie is being recognized for his efforts to close achievement gaps, create the Black Male Taskforce and the Office of Equity and Academic Attainment to develop plans and processes for addressing black male success in school, and – with the support of the Broward County School Board and in collaboration with numerous community stakeholders – spearhead efforts to redefine school discipline to eliminate the schoolhouse to jailhouse pipeline and increase positive outcomes for students. This has included implementing appropriate, targeted interventions and mentoring programs to address the root causes of student behavior issues, particularly for boys and young men of color. “I am honored to be chosen for this award by the National Alliance of Black School Educators,” said Superintendent Runcie. “Ensuring all students have access to a high-quality learning experience, as well as the support they need to successfully pursue their hopes and dreams, is essential. We continue to make tremendous progress in Broward County Public Schools. This award is a testament to the hard work and dedication of our educators, support staff and administrators in educating all students to reach their highest potential.” The Superintendent of the Year award will be presented on Saturday, November 19, 2016, during the NABSE Honors & Awards Red Carpet Gala, which takes place at the NASBE national conference in Tampa, Florida. For more information on NABSE, visit http nabse.org. ### ABOUT BROWARD COUNTY PUBLIC SCHOOLS “Committed to educating all students to reach their highest potential.” Broward County Public Schools (BCPS) is the sixth largest school district in the nation and the second largest in the state of Florida. Do Your Eyes Make You Look Tired The eyes are the first thing we notice when we meet someone. Beautiful eyes can make up for other features that are less than ideal. Likewise, eyes that are tired, droopy, or puffy may not reflect a vibrant inner self. It is often said that the earliest signs of aging are around the eyes. Perhaps people are always questioning whether or not you had a good night’s sleep because your eyes are swollen with bags. Fortunately, at the Weston Cosmetic Surgery Center, we can give you dramatically younger looking eyes through “eyelid lifts”, also known as blepharoplasty.

Life Coach For: Family Relationships Health & Wellness My passion and specialty is working with children who feel that they have a hard time expressing themselves. I help them to find their voice!

A primary reason for droopy eyes is simply due to age. It can also be hereditary. As everything droops, so do the eyebrows. As the outer part of After the eyebrows droop, the skin of the upper eyelids will look saggy, as if you had developed extra skin that was not there several years before. Removing this “extra” skin can drastically improve that droopy look. Another reason for “tired eyes” is because of droopy or migrating eyelid fat. This fat is held back by a thin wall of fibrous tissue called the orbital septum, which weakens over time. The fat, held firmly back by this wall in youth can bulge with age, giving you “baggy” upper and lower eyelids. Blepharoplasty removes this extra fat and tightens the wall, restoring a youthful contour.

“As a coach, I am practical, direct and challenging, yet also motivating and inspiring.”

For those patients with puffiness under the eyes or baggy upper and lower eyelids, laser eyelid surgery can reduce and often eliminate these problems. The end results are a more alert and youthful look around the eyes.

David A. Sherman, CPC Life Coach

Give the Gift of Luxury this Holiday Season!

The prominent fat pockets can be removed from a hidden incision along the inside surface of the eyelid. This “no stitch”, no external scar technique is utilized when patients have fat prominence of “eyelid bags” alone without excess or sagging eyelid skin. If minimal excess skin is present, a skin pinch technique is combined with transconjunctival fat removal. In this case, a “pinch” of lower eyelid skin is removed. These techniques typically result in less swelling, less discomfort, and shorter recovery time. I will assess which technique is ideal for your eyes during your personal consultation. Recovery from eyelid surgery usually takes seven to ten days. Sunglasses allow you to go out in public immediately after surgery, and make-up can be worn within about one week. Normal activity can be resumed within a few days, and exercise can be resumed within 14 days after surgery. If the eyes looking back at you in the mirror are not reflecting how you are feeling, it might be time to consider a blepharoplasty. FOOTBALL

by the Keeping Dreams Alive Foundation | www.PTRGAcademy.com “Changing a Culture, one day at a time,” is the phrase that seems to echo amongst the Coral Glades High School football program this year. The 2016 season has brought in yet another coaching staff for the Jaguars, but this one is making a positive impact on the team and its players. First-year head coach, Chris Baldwin, is making an effort to create a culture that encourages student-athletes to have academics as their rst priority. Coach Baldwin has made it clear that th in order to have a successful program “academics, academics, academics" is the forefront and the identity of this year’s football team. The Jaguars kicked off their regular season with a 2-0 record against Inlet Grove High School and Pompano Beach High School. Following these double-digit wins, the Jags have been faced with obstacles every week since. Whether it was being outplayed by a great opponent or just beating themselves, is for the athletes to decide. The toughest times for Coral Glades has been, without a doubt, their two heart-wrenching losses late in the game against two local opponents; rst against Taravella High School and then against Coral Springs Charter. Though the Jags have struggled on the eld this season, they have persevered. Consistency is the most important thing at this point Cha for this football program and it has nothing to do with wins or losses. It has to do with a coaching staff and a group of young men that have consistently invested their time into succeeding on and off the eld. It’s tough to see success beyond a scoreboard from a spectator's perspective, but it happens every day with this young football program. "It's not one week, it's not one month, it's one day at a time. It's understanding your student-athlete and where they want to be... It's a lot of pressure for these young men. They have to approach every day with an attitude to get better and do something better for themselves. I want them to take from this experience the importance of getting an education now and beyond." - Head Coach Chris Baldwin

It’s Their Business

Pierini Esthetic Center Expands Its Business on Hallmarks of Quality and Service By Louise Petraitis Reputation and experience are key factors when choosing a plastic surgery center. That’s certainly true at Pierini Esthetic Center, which has built its success on its top-tier staff, quality outcomes, and stellar service. “Most of our business—over 80 percent—now comes from word of mouth,” says Angelica Pierini, CAC VI, administrator and director of marketing. “Our customers leave happy, and that brings recommendations and endorsements.” The center was founded seven years ago in Doral by Angelica’s father, Dr. Alberto Pierini, CAC VI, a well-known plastic surgeon from Venezuela who had a long list of satisfied clients, from former Miss Venezuelas to prominent personalities. When he moved to Miami, he worked in a number of plastic surgery offices, where he was asked so often to recommend surgeons that he decided to open his own practice, says Angelica. Today, Dr. Pierini’s business has grown to 15-20 employees. The staff includes daughter Angelica and son Angel, CAC VI, vice president of operations and business development, and an extended “family” of highly trained and board-certified surgeons, estheticians, and other health care professionals. The practice has also branched out to a second location in Tamarac, Pierini: A Solution for Beauty, which was established a year and a half ago.

Surgical Interventions The center offers the spectrum of surgical interventions—eyelids, breast augmentations and reductions, butt lifts, tummy tucks, liposuction, and more. Its expertise encompasses rhinoplasties (nose reshaping) and facelifts as well. “We’re one of the few centers that specializes in facial procedures,” Angelica explains. The surgeries are extremely detailed and require a great deal of skill, she adds: “Ultimately, you must create harmony among all the features.” “Mini-facelifts” are very popular at the center. Preventative rather than corrective, they’re ideal for younger clients, those ages 45-50. “The change is more subtle than a full facelift,” Angelica points out. “Basically, you look the same, but more refreshed. There’s also less scarring, and the results last longer.” Pierini staff never take a “cookie cutter” approach: rather, each procedure is customized to the client. In the initial consultation, clients see a visual, a digital simulation, of how they’ll look after surgery. They also talk about expectations-what’s possible and what’s not, given their physical perimeters. All surgeries are same-day, done on an outpatient basis. Beforehand, everyone must get an EKG, and a general medical clearance from their primary care physicians, to prove they’re in good health. “Safety is our number one priority,” Angelica affirms. On the day of the surgery, clients arrive an hour early for a holistic therapy session, which involves hypnosis, Reiki, and other positive reinforcement and positive imagery techniques. “Even though clients want the surgery, they still get nervous,” says Angelica. “The sessions are designed to relax them, to prepare them mentally and physically for their procedures.” Recovery time varies, but generally runs from a week to ten days. All clients also receive a follow up appointment. From the first to the last visit, the staff

showers their clients with lots of tender loving care. “We’re all about service, “ says Angelica, “paying attention to every detail and making our customers feel absolutely comfortable.”

Non-Surgical Procedures To complement the surgical side of its business, the center provides non-surgical rejuvenations for the face, body, and skin. These advanced, clinically proven technologies range from BOTOX, microdermabrasions, and peels, to body sculpting, a full span of laser services, and injectables to erase wrinkles and folds. For obesity, the center recently introduced a cutting edge, virtual gastric band treatment. Holistic therapies, hormone replacement therapies, and nutrition counseling round out the offerings.

Med-Spa Nothing soothes the mind and body more than a day at the center’s spa, where pampering treatments of all sorts are available. Facials, traditional and innovative, are on the menu, complete with personalized regimens clients can follow at home to extend the benefits. Other services include five disciplines of massage, and paraffin therapy to ease sore joints and muscles. Pierini also boasts its own line of skin care products. “Our goal is to serve our clients beyond surgeries,” says Angelica. “We want to help them maintain their appearance and well-being. It reflects the philosophy of our entire practice--to discover, enhance and preserve your natural beauty.” For more information, visit pieriniesthetic.com or call (305) 303-3872.

FRIENDS OF MUSIC Invites You To Attend “a Taste of the Holidays”

BY DR. SIMON WONG

Gut Microbial Imbalance and Emotional/Cognitive Function Part One

Choral Springs Christian Academy Performance at a prior Taste of the Holidays

The Friends of Music, Inc is pleased to invite you to attend the event that kicks off the holidays season... “A Taste of the Holidays”! The merriment starts at 7 P.M. on Thursday, December 8th at the beautiful Plaza del Lago at Heron Bay. Sponsored in part by the Coral Springs Festival of the Arts, it is a night of fabulous food, live entertainment, auctions and raffles. Friends of Music, an all-volunteer 501 (c) (3), was incorporated in 2003 to fill the void created by the loss of the Florida Philharmonic. They wanted to make sure that music stayed in Northwestern Broward. Since that time, Friends of Music has presented over 43 wonderfully enjoyable concerts for people of all ages at very affordable prices. The concerts also present a fine learning experience for over 1600 student musicians who rehearse with and perform “side by side” on stage with the professional musicians. FOM just hosted a choral presentation by Tropical Wave, the premier ensemble of the Gay Men’s Chorus of South Florida. They have two other concerts scheduled: • On January 28th, the Merling Trio combines piano, violin and cello to bring the music of Gershwin, Brahms, Haydn and more to the setting of the Coral Springs Museum of Art. A select group of acclaimed music students will join the Trio for a special interlude during part of the event to play “side by side” with the Trio. • On April 1st, Steinway artist Julian Gargiulo will perform a variety of popular piano favorites, both classical and some original jazz inflected compositions. The artist will conduct a Master Class prior to the performance which will be held in the intimate setting of St Mary Magdalene Episcopal Church. Friends of Music also provides financial support to local public middle and high school music departments for necessities not funded by the school budget. FOM has donated in excess of $170,000 to these schools to support their orchestras, choral groups and bands. Tickets are $50 and must be purchased in advance. For tickets or additional information, please contact Linda Hanson at 954-461-8023 of llhncs@aol.com.

DECEMBER 2016

The Human Microbiome Project (HMP) was a five-year study (2008 -2013) with a budget of $115 millions by United States National Institutes of Health (NIH) initiative with the goal of identifying and characterizing the microorganisms which are found in association with both healthy and diseased humans (the human microbiome). The HMP has been described as a logical conceptual and experimental extension of the better known Human Genome Project. It has since passed beyond its initial goals of identifying the gut microbiota relationship with autoimmune disease (e.g. allergy, lupus) and atherosclerosis (cardiovascular disease). This article is a continue discussion on gut microbiota with special focus on brain/cognitive disorder. Alterations in bidirectional brain-gut microbiota interactions are believed to be involved in the parthenogenesis of well-known brain-gut disorders such as irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) and related functional gastrointestinal disorders and have been implicated as a possible mechanism in the pathophsiology of several brain disorders including autism spectrum disorders (ASDs), disorders of mood and affect (depression/ anxiety), and chronic pain syndrome. The intestinal microbiota and its metabolites have been shown to be involved in modulating GI functions, given their ability to affect intestinal permeability (leaky gut syndrome?), mucosal immune function (immune system dysregulation), intestinal motility (with symptoms such as nausea/constipation) and gut sensitivity (gassy/bloating), and activity in the enteric nervous system (“second brain”) which may lead to neuroinflammatory conditions such as multiple sclerosis, Parkinson’s, and Alzheimer’s diseases. Preclinical evidences suggest that the microbiota and its metabolites are likely to be involved in modulating behaviors and brain processes, including stress responsiveness, emotional behavior, pain modulation, and brain biochemistry. Several experimental approaches have been used to study the modulatory effect of gut microbiota on gut-brain interactions, including gut microbial manipulation with antibiotics, fecal microbial transplantation (yuk!), and germ-free (GF) animal models. Notably, in experimental animals that the absence of a normal gut microbiota, i.e. GF model, can have significant effects on adult stress responsiveness and that these alterations can be partially reversed by colonization of the gut. Of course, we should be always be cautious when extrapolating any animal findings to humans. But an indirect approach of using functional MRI (fMRI) to assess human brain changes in response to modulation of the gut microbiota has yield noteworthy result. While an intensive 4-month probiotics use by human subjects do not provide significant self reported changes of their mood, it produces noticeable changes in their fMRI scan of the part of the brain responsible for stress and emotion. A preliminary study like this bets for longer time span follow up studies.

How to manage noise aversion in dogs and strengthen the human-animal bond

BEST OF CORAL SPRINGS & PARKLAND 2015 BEST PET GROOMING

(Family Features) The holiday season seems to last longer and get more hectic every year. Whether cooking the Thanksgiving feast or doing last-minute gift shopping, everyone can get a little stressed out. Most people don’t know that their dog may also experience anxiety during these celebrations. According to an online survey conducted by Harris Poll and commissioned by Zoetis, 46 percent of dog owners reported their dog showed symptoms of stress during the holidays; that stress could be due to noise aversion. The survey also found that 44 percent of dog owners said their dogs suffer from noise aversion. Noise aversion is the set of fear-based behaviors that dogs display when subjected to “noise triggers.” During the year-end holidays, such noise triggers might be the doorbell, boisterous family gatherings, children playing with loud toys or New Year’s fireworks. During the busy holiday season, common behavioral signs of canine noise aversion include: panting, trembling or shaking, pacing or restlessness, vocalizing, hiding, owner-seeking behavior, cowering, refusal to eat, excessive vigilance or hypervigilance, and escape behaviors. Although noise aversion is common, dog owners often do not seek help from their veterinarians. One reason may be that pet owners recognize their dogs overreact to noise, but do not recognize that these behaviors are a demonstration of fear. This fear can disrupt the human-animal bond by causing anxiety for the dogs and stress for their humans.

Therefore, it is important to seek treatment for your dog if he is displaying signs of noise aversion. Not only are these dogs distressed and suffering, but when left untreated, noise aversion can progress to a more severe state. 100% NO-KILL SOCIETY

“It is crucial to understand the level of physiological suffering that occurs with the stress and anxiety of noise aversion,” said Dr. Lynn Honeckman, a Florida veterinarian. “Ignoring the fearful pet during a noise event or using prescription medications as a last resort is not the standard of care as outlined by the American Board of Veterinary Behaviorists.”

Puppies Kittens Dogs Cats

A new medication called SILEO® (dexmedetomidine oromucosal gel), the first and only FDA-approved treatment for canine noise aversion, is available via prescription from your veterinarian. It can be easily administered at home to calm your dog without sedating him for the duration of a noisy holiday event. The first dose can be given as soon as the dog shows signs of anxiety and fear, or approximately 30-60 minutes before a known fear- or anxiety-causing noise stimulus. There are additional ways to make your dog with noise aversion feel more comfortable. Dogs always need a safe place to call their own, and that can be especially true when they need comfort from loud celebrations. Sometimes a dim, quiet room or crate can provide comfort, while soft music can soothe other dogs. Don’t suffer through the holiday season with a fearful and anxious dog and a stressed family. If you think your dog is showing signs of noise aversion, consult your veterinarian for guidance on a solution that allows you and your dog to enjoy the holidays together. The program is a partnership between National History Day, the Roy Rosenzweig Center for History and New Media, the American Battle Monuments Commission and the National Cemetery Administration. Davis will select an American hero who is buried or memorialized in an American Battle Monuments Commission or National Cemetery Administration cemetery. She will conduct in-depth research on the life of this fallen hero as part of this program, which is focused on World War II in the Pacific. Davis will walk in the footsteps of history as she travels to San Francisco, Honolulu and Manila in July 2017 to gain a better understanding of the American sacrifice in World War II. During the program, Davis will present a eulogy at the grave or memorial of her selected fallen hero. “I commend Ms. Davis for being selected for this honor,” said Superintendent Robert W. Runcie. “The Understanding Sacrifice program provides educators with unique insight into the lives of American fallen soldiers. Through the program, Ms. Davis can bring this powerful experience back to her students and provide them with a greater

understanding of our nation’s history and the freedoms our servicemen and women have fought to protect.” Davis will also create lesson plans from her hands-on experience to share with her students at Ramblewood Middle that will become part of a database of lessons for use with the Understanding Sacrifice program. “National History Day strives to connect students to the past and one of the best points of contact with any student, is their teacher” said National History Day Executive Director Dr. Cathy Gorn. “This program is highly competitive and Ms. Davis should be proud to be accepted. I know she will use this once in a lifetime journey to create a superb lesson plan.” “Committed to educating all students to reach their highest potential.” Broward County Public Schools (BCPS) is the sixth largest school district in the nation and the second largest in the state of Florida. BCPS is Florida’s first fully accredited school system since 1962. BCPS has over 271,000 students and approximately 175,000 adult students in 236 schools, centers and technical colleges, and 101 charter schools. BCPS serves a diverse student population, with students representing 208 different countries and 181 different languages. To learn more, visit browardschools.com. Our Coral Springs Office Is Moving To A New Location In November- December 754-702-2677 2929 University Drive Suite 106. Coral Springs, FL 33065

954-755-4994

7501 Wiles Road, Suite 104, Coral Springs, Fl 33067

An ankle sprain is an extremely common sports injury that most often affects the outside of the ankle. A person describes this as the foot rolling underneath the leg. Some patients will describe a “popping” sound at the time of the incident. Ligaments, which connect bone to bone, are injured in ankle sprains. The anterior talofibular ligament, calcaneofibular ligament, and posterior talofibular ligament are most commonly affected. They can be stretched, partially torn, or completely ruptured with an ankle sprain.

What are the symptoms of an ankle sprain? An ankle sprain can present with mild to severe pain, swelling, and bruising. Because of the swelling, you may experience sensations of throbbing, sharp pain, and even numbness or tingling. A person may or may not be able to apply any weight to the affected limb depending on the severity of the injury.

How are ankle sprains diagnosed?

954-325-9871

100 NW 82nd Ave, Suite 106, Plantation, Fl 33324

Ankle sprains are diagnosed clinically (based on your symptoms and history). Your podiatrist will obtain x-rays to rule out a fracture of the bone.

How are ankle sprains treated? R – REST your ankle by limiting your walking. Use crutches if necessary. I – You will be IMMOBILIZED in a CAM walker. This is a “walking cast”. The CAM walker (boot) is a removable walking cast that will protect the ankle from further trauma and stress to allow healing. You need to stay in the CAM Walker at all times except for when you shower, drive, and sleep. It is important to immobilize your ankle so the ligaments do not heal in a stretched position. If they heal in a stretched position, you will be prone to spraining your ankle in the future.

C – COMPRESSION will control the swelling and therefore decrease your pain. E – You will be instructed to ELEVATE the affected extremity. The longer you sit or stand without the leg elevated (preferably above the level of the heart), the more swelling and therefore pain you will experience. A patient usually needs to be immobilized in the CAM walker for 2-4 weeks depending on the severity of the injury. Once the patient is transitioned out of the CAM walker, physical therapy is recommended to rehabilitate the ankle.

FREE ANALYSIS

Identifying your personal values is an important part of understanding yourself and creating a space where you can be successful with personal and professional goals. In this context, the word “value” may refer to how you feel about the work you are doing and the contribution it makes to society. The word “value” may also refer to your personal life and how you choose to spend your time and with whom. Effortless fulfillment and joy are experienced when you create a personal and professional life that is congruent with your core values. So, how do you start to figure out what your core values are?

FIND OUT IF YOU HAVE THE RIGHT COVERAGE

877-304-2323 www.mlinsurance.net

Step 4: Take your 3 core values and write them down, with a definition and what it means for you to honor that value. Yay! You have now created your core value system. You can refer to and call on this as a foundation for the intentions you create, the goals you set and the choices you make in each moment of who you want to be. If at any time, you find yourself feeling disappointed or frustrated, check in with yourself and identify which value you feel is being compromised. Understanding and owning your values creates a sense of empowerment and clarity that can profoundly support your life, personally and professionally. Step 4: Now it is time to drill it down to your core 3 values. Look separately at each value and ask yourself, “If ___________ were missing from my life, I would be okay.” Or “If I have to live without one of these values, I can let go of ________.”

It’s Their Business

BY JOSEPH BUCHINO

The Snowbirds Are Coming!! It’s that time of year again. The traffic is more congested, lines are longer at grocery stores, restaurants are packed by 6pm… The winter visitors, aka “snowbirds”, are arriving in full force! This happens every year in Florida and who could blame them? If I lived up north, I would also make the trip down here to beat the cold. The winter visitors bring a lot of business with them. One business in particular that seems to stay busy during the season is the emergency restoration business. Every year during this season, our mold remediation workload seems to double for the months of November and December. This is due to a number of things. I would say the majority of our mold remediation work is related to the A/C unit. Proper maintenance of an A/C unit is very important, especially in Florida where they run all year long. Here are some tips to save you money and help prevent any damage to your property: - Make sure you have someone physically checking on your property at least once a month. A good property manager or a friend can do this. Some of the best property managers will go as far as to send you updated pictures of your property.

- One of the best investments I made was a NEST Thermostat. It is referred to as a “learning thermostat” because it can create a schedule, its proven to save energy, and you can control it from a smart phone. I highly suggest investing in the NEST thermostat or one similar to it. - Flush out you’re A/C drain line before you leave for an extended period of time. This will save you a lot of heart ache in the long run. Nothing worse than arriving at your home, A/C is working properly, but you have water damage due to a clogged drain line. - I always suggest having you’re A/C coils cleaned. Your A/C has been running all year long and probably hasn’t had the filter changed. If your filter hasn’t been changed

These are just suggestions, as I am not a licensed A/C technician. These are tips that I have picked up over my tenure and tips I’ve utilize. If you have any questions concerning air conditioning, I recommend you talk to a reputable A/C company. I am a licensed restoration expert. I deal with any and all kinds of water mitigation, mold remediation, fire/smoke and biohazard/trauma clean up. My company, Restoration 1 – Parkland, works in the tri county area and we give free mold inspections and evaluations. If you have any questions, please feel free to call us at 1-888-959-0889 or you can also check us out at www.restoration1.com/parkland. Joseph Buchino spent 13 years in the Army. Four of them with the 82nd Airborne and nine of them as a Green Beret in 1st Special Forces Group (Airborne). He is the proud owner of Restoration 1 – Parkland. - You can prevent mold from developing on your property by using a programmable thermostat. Have it programmed to run your AC at 72° for two hours in the morning and 85° the rest of the time. This will prevent mold by removing moisture from the air during cooler hours.

Happy Holidays

7 Ways to Include Everyone In the Holiday Cheer

(Family Features) Holidays bring get-togethers filled with music, food and conversation. However, for those who experience hearing loss, the season often takes on a whole different sound. Those with hearing loss often end up feeling isolated from the festivities, but there are ways you can make sure they feel comfortable joining the fun. A survey* by Rayovac, which was conducted online by Harris Poll, found that 56 percent of Americans say talking and catching up with family members is their favorite part of family gatherings, but nearly one out of every five (19 percent) say they have experienced difficulty communicating with someone who is hard of hearing. If you’ll be escorting a family member with hearing loss to a holiday event, be sure their hearing devices are in good operating condition with batteries that are able to power all of the device’s features, like Rayovac. The hearing aid battery company has also introduced the Gift of Hearing this holiday season, a campaign in which a portion of proceeds from its battery sales benefit the Starkey Hearing Foundation. This holiday season, make the most of the opportunity to share quality conversations with loved ones who have trouble hearing by following these simple tips from Shari Eberts of livingwithhearingloss.com:

• Get their attention before speaking by saying their name or tapping them on the shoulder. • Give some context as to the topic of the conversation to help them infer. • Make sure they can see your lips. Stand in a well-lit area and be sure you are facing them directly, with your hand away from your face while talking. • Know that background noise can provide difficult distractions. If you’re hoping for more than a passing greeting, find a quiet place where you can visit comfortably. • Enunciate as you talk, but avoid the temptation to speak overly slowly. Instead, speak at a moderate but steady rate. • Be patient and be prepared to repeat or rephrase your comments. • Remember that if you are feeling frustrated, your partner in conversation may be, too. Keep your sense of humor so you can enjoy the holiday together. Learn more about The Gift of Hearing campaign, and find hearing aid batteries designed with the latest technology in mind, at Rayovac.com.

COMMUNITY NEWS

Message from the Chief – Stay Safe This Holiday

T

he men and women of the Coral Springs Police Department are committed to keeping our residents and visitors safe this holiday season and throughout the year. Following some simple safety tips will help keep you and your family safe.

Remember, a few minutes of prevention can save you from becoming a victim of a crime this holiday season. On behalf of the men and women of the Coral Springs Police Department, I wish you a safe holiday and very Happy New Year. --Chief Tony Pustizzi

Celebrate

Too often, opportunistic criminals prey on holiday shoppers. When you are out shopping for your holiday gifts, stay alert. Remember to park your car in a well-lit area and secure valuables inside your trunk before arriving at another destination or take them with you. When you return to your vehicle, have your keys in hand so that you can quickly unlock the door and get in. You should never carry large amounts of money and if you go to an ATM for cash, do so during daytime hours in a safe location. With the number of vehicles on our roadways and in crowded parking lots, it is important to practice patience. Speeding, distractions and alcohol contribute to the increased number of accidents this time of year. If you plan on leaving home for the holidays and are a Coral Springs resident, I encourage you to register up for our free Vacation Watch program. To qualify for the vacation watch program, your home must be vacant for a minimum of five days and a 30-day maximum time frame. To register, contact the Coral Springs Police Department’s non-emergency line at 954-344-1800 within 48 hours of your departure. There are many ways you can protect your home from thieves, before you leave town, remember to: • Secure your doors, windows, garage, storage sheds and gates • Leave a parked car in your driveway or ask trusted neighbor to park in your driveway • Have the post office hold your mail • Stop your newspaper delivery

Responsibly There is no doubt the holidays are a time for celebration, but if you are planning to attend holiday festivities where alcohol is served, do not drink and drive. You can injure yourself or others by recklessly getting behind the wheel after a non-drinking driver or utilize a car service. Coral Springs Police will be out in force to ensure the safety of the motoring public in the city during the holidays and all year round.

Calling All Seniors Are you a senior living in Coral Springs and interested in learning more about crime prevention and safety? Consider joining the Coral Springs Police Senior Empowerment Group. The group meets the 3rd Wednesday of every month at 11:00 a.m. at the Senior Center at Sartory Hall (10150 NW 29th Street) and if you are 62 years or older, you are invited to attend. For more information, contact Community Involvement Coordinator Lynne Martzall at (954) 344-1833.

Local Police Agencies Target Aggressive Drivers It might not come as a surprise that South Florida leads the state with the greatest number of aggressive drivers. Not only do we hear about cases in which aggressive driving has led to accidents, but many of us witness such driving during our daily commute. The National Highway Safety Administration (NHTSA) describes aggressive driving as a combination of moving traffic offenses that endanger other persons or property, and in a study by the same organization, 50 percent of Americans admitted to occasional aggressive driving. That means one of every two people knowingly exceeds the posted speed limit, follows another vehicle too closely, makes erratic or unsafe lane changes, doesn’t obey traffic signs and signals or runs red lights. To ensure the safety of the motoring public, the Coral Springs Police Department is partnering with the Margate Police Department, the Coconut Creek Police Department and Florida Department of Transportation on a multi-agency Aggressive Driving Task Force enforcement operation. The operation is underway until December 16, 2016 along 441 (State Road 7) from Kimberly Boulevard to Hillsboro Boulevard. The goal of the multi-agency task for is to promote safety and reduce vehicle crashes, which tend to increase during the holidays.

“On October 27th 2016, members from the Coral Springs High School Marching Band under the direction of Brett Dawson surprised WWII veteran Theodore Lekas with a performance at his house. After a long day of practicing, the Marching Band drove to Mr. Lekas house where they started playing various music. Mr. Lekas who had no idea what was happening was surprised to find the band outside his house showing support for a WWII veteran days prior to his departure to Washington DC as part of the Honor Flight program which takes veterans to Washington DC. Mr. Lekas served in WWII and was stationed in Okinawa with the CB division. After the performance, members of the band thanked Mr. Lekas for his service.”
