City Manager Erdal Dönmez announces retirement

A

• Crime rate continues on a positive trend, coming in below the annual goal of 2,500 for the third consecutive year.

t a Commission Meeting on Wednesday, January 4, Erdal Dönmez announced his retirement, effective April 28, 2017. Dönmez was appointed City Manager in November 2010 after serving for 10 years as Deputy/Assistant City Manager.

• The Fire Department launched the Mobile Integrated Healthcare Program, which makes medical house calls.

“On an exciting, and rather sad note on my part, is my announcement to retire. I’ve been working 17 years in Coral Springs and 16 years prior to that in the City of Miami. I believe there is no perfect time to retire, but this is probably as good as it gets. I’m very humbled and proud to have been your City Manager. I want to thank all of you – the Commissioners and senior staff. I truly enjoyed working with all of you.”

• Coral Springs Charter School remains A-rated for the 13th consecutive year. • Completed many of the General Obligation Bonds projects, including the expansion of the Police Department’s CSI building, built a new Safety Town building, and expanded the Humane Building. New Fire Stations 43 and 95 are expected to be completed in early 2017.

The City Commission accepted his resignation with regret but thanked him for his years of service.

• Broke ground on the new Municipal Complex, which is expected to be completed by Fall 2017.

“You took the City from an unstable position in the midst of a recession and brought it back to being one of the best cities around. We refocused on making improvements, on cleaning up the City, making it a better place to live and that’s unbelievable commendable. I want to thank you for your years of service to the community,” Vice Mayor Dan Daley said.

• Increased our social media presence and hosted Facebook “Live” videos to keep residents informed. • Developed new programs for seniors, including Learn to Speak French and Senior Speaker Series. • Started online registrations for almost all recreation classes.

“You’ve done a heck of a job as City Manager. The entire City is grateful to have you and your leadership. Congratulations on your retirement,” Commissioners Larry Vignola added. “You put together a team that’s going to be hard to beat and we are going to miss you. Good luck to you and we understand [your decision] fully,” Commissioner Lou Cimaglia said. “I have learned a lot and you’ve been a great leader. You’ve done a great job with your senior management team and you are going to be missed,” Commissioner Joy Carter added. “I have had the greatest trust in your work and professionalism,” Mayor Skip Campbell said. “It is truly a beautiful day, a day of celebration. We have a City Manager who has the support of the Commission, his staff and community and you’ve decided to retire and enjoy this next stage in your life. It’s been a pleasure to work with you, and your commitment to the City has been amazing,” City Attorney John Hearn said.

Under his leadership, the City had many great accomplishments in the past year alone, including: • City’s AAA rating re-affirmed by two out of three major credit rating agencies. • Added $3M to reserves and finished Fiscal Year 2016 with a surplus, with all positions and programs fully funded. • Maintained one the lowest millage rates and fees in Broward County. • Employee satisfaction remains strong at 94%.

4

FEBRUARY 2017

• Piloted a “City Day of Service” program including employees, volunteers and other community stakeholders in several community service projects. • Continued to receive outstanding ratings according to the latest business survey results, with an Overall Quality Rating of 96%. • Expanded the existing Economic Development Pilot Program to add more flexibility with respect to the Land Development Code. • Welcomed many new businesses to Coral Springs, including Total Wine, 4 Rivers Smokehouse, Orchard Supply & Hardware. • The Sawgrass Trailhead at Atlantic Boulevard was completed. • Hosted dozens of athletic events at our parks and facilities. • Renovated many City facilities, including the Aquatic Complex, Gymnasium and Waste Transfer Station. Dönmez also expressed his appreciation to the City employees, who deliver exemplary service to the public. “I believe that in the past 17 years, I learned much about myself, the community and how to manage an organization of $200M budget. On top of that, it was the most difficult of economic times. It was a huge responsibility and I believe with everybody’s help, we managed to make the City, in almost every area, equal or better. I’m so grateful to have the Commission and staff working in harmony. We are truly an example to public and private companies, and I am very proud to say that,” Dönmez added.

The City Commission will discuss the possibility of conducting a national search at an upcoming meeting.

Mayor Hunschofsky

We’re Open.

I

hope everyone had a great start to the New Year, it is hard to believe we are already in the second month of 2017. This is the time of year when Parkland’s high school seniors hear back from the colleges they applied to. As the saying goes “College is a match to be made, not a prize to be won.” Congratulations to all the students who have already received, or are about to receive, acceptance letters. At this time of the year in South Florida we can really enjoy beautiful weather and outdoor activities. At the Equestrian Center at Temple Park between Holmberg Road and Ranch Road you will see the Parkland Farmers’ Market, the largest in the County, the first and third Sunday of the month. You will see people playing tennis at the recently opened (January) Parkland Tennis Center at Quigley Park. At Pine Trails and Terramar Park you will see soccer, lacrosse and baseball on the many fields and basketball on the courts. Also at Terramar, you will see new pickleball courts in use. At Pine Trails Park we have the new inclusive playground with sensory, physical, and social activities. This playground ensures multiple levels of challenge within each activity, provides cooperative play, and vestibular motion to support children with autism. A playground that is a Certified Inclusive Playground—a designation that ensures it meets all top-level requirements for an outstanding play experience for everyone. In the heart of Pine Trails Park is the Parkland Recreation and Enrichment Center (PREC) which is home to workout facilities, basketball courts, and multifunction space that is used for different classes and programs for people of all ages. On Saturday, February 4th at 10:00am the PREC is host to the Mayor’s Chess Challenge—an event held in a different Broward city each month. This is a free event and it provides an opportunity for players of all ages, novices and experts, to play chess with other chess players, elected officials, and community leaders. There will also be instructors on hand to help those new to chess. At Barkland, our aptly-named dog park, you will see more dogs running and playing and more dog owners talking and laughing than most times during the year. The weather is just perfect for man and dog alike. Adjacent to Barkland is the Parkland Library. And if you want to see a lot of activity, visit our library and you will see programs for everyone. Book discussions, teen writers, reading buddies, writing buddies, chess club, Mah Jongg, author visits, artist receptions, and on and on. What you will see most of all, whether you are at Pine Trails Park, Terramar Park, the Tennis Center at Quigley Park, the Parkland Farmers’ Market at the Equestrian Center, Barkland, the Parkland Library, or even Liberty Park—where the splash pad works even in February—are smiling families. I hope you will be able to take some time to enjoy what our community has to offer this time of year. Information about all our events can be found on the City’s website at www.cityofparkland.org. As always, please reach out to me with your comments and ideas. I welcome your input and can be reached at chunschofsky@cityofparkland.org.

Coral Springs to honor volunteers and accomplishments at State of the City By Nicol JeNkiNs

T

he City of Coral Springs and its residents have much to celebrate this year. A new Municipal Complex and continued economic development projects are just a few of the many accomplishments.

Join your neighbors and fellow business owners for the celebration at the annual State of the City. The event will take place on Thursday, February 16th at 6:30 p.m. at the Coral Springs Center for the Arts, located at 2855 Coral Springs Drive Coral Springs. The City will highlight its accomplishments over the past year, thank its volunteers and end the night with a concert by GETBACK!® THE BEATLES EXPERIENCE LIVE!, featuring hits from the Beatles! The State of the City is free to Coral Springs residents and business owners. Tickets are available first-come, first-served at City Hall, City Hall in the Mall and Coral Springs Center for the Arts; must be 13 years or older to attend. State of the City is a tradition in Coral Springs. The City has held this event for over 20 years. “State of the City has been an annual event in Coral Springs for 20 plus years. The goal of this event is to share the City’s accomplishments over the past year and thank our many volunteers for all of their service. The community is invited to attend, enjoy a free concert and learn about the City,” said Maria Fuentes-Archilla, Communications & Marketing Director for the City of Coral Springs. At the event, the City will honor the Committee members and volunteers. Coral Springs Mayor Skip Campbell and City Manager will briefly speak highlighting the accomplishments, followed by an entertaining performance from GetBack! The Beatles Experience Live. Committee members and volunteers are also invited to attend a Volunteer Reception prior to the event. They will be honored for their hard work and dedication to making the local community a better place. “The State of the City looks back at the accomplishments for 2016, but we do have some exciting things happening in 2017— the Municipal Complex will be completed in the Fall, in addition to the new Fire Stations 43 and 95 will soon be completed. Economic development continues to be a priority in the City; and we’re looking forward to welcoming Cleveland Clinic in the near future, Broward Health Coral Springs, the Village Green development with Starbucks and Holy Cross Urgent Care and much more,” said Fuentes-Archilla.

Residents can review the City of Coral Springs annual report at www.CoralSprings.org to learn more about the City’s initiatives.

HEALTH & WELLNESS Dr. Monique Bain

Rejuvenating with Dermarollers

E

veryone wants smoother, brighter and younger looking skin! The good news is that you can have it in 2017 without undergoing expensive and risky cosmetic surgery. The new treatment using derma rollers has gained massive popularity. These professional skin needling treatments are an established procedure showing clinical skin improvements and have celebrities like Demi Moore, Kim Kardashian, Jennifer Aniston and Gwyneth Paltrow using it for healthy and tighter looking skin. The treatments are gentle, pain free and the best part of all, they are completely natural. The derma roller is used to treat face, neck and body for rejuvenation, fine lines, acne scarring and stretch marks. The skin responds to treatment by naturally producing collagen which your skin needs to stay firm and regenerate scar tissue. New skin cells are generated over a process taking a few weeks to enhance overall structure. Patients get the benefits of new collagen and your skin care will be more effective. The procedure makes micro fine holes in your skin in the same way you might erate a lawn and it allows active ingredients to penetrate your skin more effectively. Many practitioners will use vitamins on the skin for stronger and faster results. As we age our skin loses elasticity as collagen levels decline, leaving skin looking tired and lined. The derma roller procedure counteract this by stimulating collagen production. Furthermore, collagen production also visibly reduces the appearance of body stretchmarks.

“I know of no single formula for success. But over the years I have observed that some attributes of leadership are universal and are often about finding ways of encouraging people to combine their efforts, their talents, their insights, their enthusiasm and their inspiration to work together.” -Queen Elizabeth II

“Perseverance is failing 19 times and succeeding the 20th.”

The process is exactly the same whether you’re having the treatment done to the face or body. We first use a topical anesthetic cream or ice if the patient is very sensitive. The procedure takes 30 minutes from beginning to end. The derma roller penetrates the topmost layer of the skin. Our derma roller device allows the practitioner to adjust the needle depth throughout the treatment depending on the face or body area. The natural regeneration of the cells takes up to 6 weeks and leads to better looking skin. Immediately after the procedure the skin looks flushed and it may feel tighter than normal. The slight redness normally subsides within 1 to 2 hours following the procedure. The procedure also works in reducing hyperpigmentation, normalizing melanocytes and controlling abnormal formation of pigment. Valentines Day is the day, “according to the calendar”, to let the person who you have allowed into that very special place in your heart know that you trust them, love and appreciate them, and hold them in a special regard. It sounds like you both have gotten into some destructive habits the rest of the year that now makes doing that feel less authentic. The implication here is that your relationship has developed into a ‘defensive/ protect oneself” model rather than a ‘trusting/protect each other” pattern. When couples change the way they respond to each other, over time, it becomes a habit that becomes more difficult to break free from. Your letter indicates you have both become stuck in a destructive rut that has divided your relationship. Disagreeing isn’t the problem, in fact seeing things differently can provide different perspectives and options you both can gain from, if you feel safe to do so. All couples need to find ways to maintain trust in their relationship as if the health of the relationship depends on it… because it does! Our recommendation is that you both do something special this Valentines Day, use it as a day to share your appreciation and love for each other by addressing the health of your relationship and making an appointment for couple’s therapy.

My partner and I have been living together for over five years and have been together for almost twelve years. I always wanted to have that special someone in my life, and as silly as it may seem, Valentines Day has always been a big deal to me and I go all out and make it very romantic. Over the past several years it has lost something, or maybe I have lost something. I don’t celebrate with the same sincerity and excitement I once did and I feel sad about that. Maybe it’s all the fighting we do. Like lots of couples, we have our share of problems which leads to fighting, which never seems to get us anywhere. Sometimes she gets so angry that she actually scares me to the point I just back off completely from her. I don’t know what else to do, but this seems to make her even more nuts with me. When I do fight back we are so snarky to each other that I end up being angrier and feeling numb. Sometimes we go for days ignoring each other. I have come to realize that we fight over the dumb things most of the time. We have one child who is old enough now to pick up on the tension and that is a big concern. I don’t have a clue to if, or how we can fix this, but I know things are getting worse all the time and ignoring it isn’t helping. I am having trouble seeing our future and that scares me.

Best - Karen and Debbie

REAL ESTATE BY ANDI WITES

The Year In Review For South Florida Real Estate Staying on top of Real Estate trends is a large part of the job of Duff Rubin, Regional Sales VP for Southeast Florida Coldwell Banker Residential. MarketQuest Reports use the Southeast Florida Multiple Listing Boards’ statistics to provide market indicators and results. Duff has provided me with this interesting look at where our market has been and what we might expect for 2017. Looking back at the residential real estate market in South Florida last year, it seems like 2016 was for the most part pretty normal. That might seem like a negative, but in a volatile industry like real estate – and a year as crazy as 2016 – normal came as a welcome relief. So while there were a few unexpected ups and downs, things were overall fairly stable. Prices continued to rise, but at an incremental, sustainable rate, and were up 4% year-to-date. Home sales were down following a robust 2015 market, and the inventory of homes for sale was at a mostly balanced level.

In real estate, a six-month supply of inventory – which means it would take six months to sell all of the homes for sale at the current sales pace – is considered a balanced market, one that favors neither buyers nor sellers. Anything less than a six-month supply is typically a sellers’ market and more than six months’ worth is a buyers’ market. Our inventory levels have been hovering around the six-month mark most of the year, though they began trending up in the fall as sales slowed down and we ended with a 7.9 months’ supply of homes for sale – moving into buyer’s market territory. Here’s a look at how 2016 compared to 2015. The figures below are from the Greater Fort Lauderdale REALTORS, Miami Association of REALTORS and REALTORS Association of the Palm Beaches1 for Broward, MiamiDade and Palm Beach counties, all property types, in all price ranges. Property Sales: 93,952 in 2016 vs. 101,855 in 2015, a decrease of 7.8% Average Sales Price: $343,875 in Dec.

2016 vs. $348,045 in Dec. 2015, a decrease of 1.2% Property Inventory: 46,653 in Dec. 2016 vs. 50,315 in Dec. 2015, a decrease of 7.3% Days on the Market: 80 days in Dec. 2016 vs. 84 days in Dec. 2015, a decrease of 4.8% Overall, things look good, though sellers should make sure they’re pricing appropriately to be competitive. In comparison, the luxury market was a bit softer. A whopping 32 months’ supply of homes for sale in the $1 million and up pricepoint and fewer property sales meant homes stayed on the market longer. With that in mind, here are the stats2: Property Sales: 3,701 in 2016 vs. 4,206 in 2015, a decrease of 12% Average Sales Price: $1,990,628 in Dec. 2016 vs. $2,594,099 in Dec. 2015, a decrease of 23.3% Property Inventory: 7,670 in Dec. 2016 vs. 6,690 in Dec. 2015, an increase of 14.6% Days on the Market: 155 days in Dec. 2016 vs. 149 days in Dec. 2015, an increase of 4%

Call for price.

Whether or not these market trends will continue in 2017 depends on a number of factors, including a few worth watching closely. The first is mortgage rates, which have started to tick up. That could encourage any buyers or sellers who have been on the fence that now is the time to act. And if more potential sellers become motivated to list their homes, that could bring inventory levels up even further. Finally, keep an eye on two groups of potential home buyers: Millennial first-time buyers and foreign buyers. Both have steadily been making their move into our housing market, and both are a large enough group to really make an impact in the year ahead. As a specialist in Northwest Broward Real Estate, it is important to remember that each individual community, city and location will have a history of it’s own that must be analyzed before determining today’s true market value. Always consult a REALTOR when looking for precise information on a property.

Lipo Abdominoplasty for Body Sculpting Lipoabdominoplasty is an advanced technique bringing significant change to the traditional tummy tuck. The procedure involves a combination of traditional liposuction with an open skin and fat removal procedure, typically referred to as a tummy tuck. The combination of the two procedures enables the plastic surgeon to better contour and shape the abdomen and the adjacent areas more completely. Patients who have experienced increased skin laxity and excess fat deposition in the abdomen, hips, and waist can now transform their bodies into a more beautiful shape. This procedure is ideal for patients who have excess skin and fat with abdominal weakness, commonly seen after childbirth, weight loss, and with the alterations that are seen with the aging process. Lipoabdominoplasty safely combines suction-assisted lipectomy (liposuction) with abdominal muscle tightening and skin removal. The fat which is removed via lipoaspiration can be added to other areas of contour deficiency like the buttocks through fat grafting or transfer. This combination reshapes the entire midsection and buttock giving the individual the shapely body contour they desire. The technique should be used with caution in patients who have a history of smoking or previous abdominal surgery and should be performed only by experienced surgeons who are certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery. There are a number of important variables that determine whether a patient is a candidate for a lipoabdominoplasty. For any plastic surgical procedure to be a complete success, medical and psychological fitness for surgery is a prerequisite. The appropriate patient typically is close to their ideal body weight with anatomic features that may be improved surgically, including loose skin, excess fat, and weakened abdominal muscles. The distribution of fat is one determinant of the improvement a patient will have from a tummy tuck. Fat in the superficial tissue is the type that is possible to pinch. This superficial fat may be removed through excision (tummy tuck) or aspiration (liposuction). If skin laxity or looseness is significant, the skin and fat should be removed with a tummy tuck. If the skin elasticity is adequate; however, the superficial fat may be removed through liposuction alone. Liposuction may flatten www.CityNewsMagaziNe.CoM

the abdomen, but it will not tighten the skin significantly. Patients who have soft, distended abdomens frequently have lax muscles or a separation of rectus muscle in the midline known as diastasis. This is common after multiple pregnancies making it a great procedure for ‘Mommy Makeovers’ or significant weight loss patients. When patients have excess skin that extends to the lateral hips and lower back or buttocks, an extended or circumferential abdominoplasty may be necessary. For most patients the resultant incision is well hidden within underwear and bathing suit lines. The procedure usually takes 2 – 3 hours. Patients should prepare to rest for a minimum of one to two weeks after their procedure. Dr. Messa is board certified by both the American Board of Plastic Surgery and the American Board of Surgery, an active member of the American Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, American Society of Plastic Surgeons, and a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons. He is a recognized expert in cosmetic plastic surgery and has achieved Allergan’s Black Diamond Award as one of the top 1% of plastic surgery practices in the country by volume. Dr. Messa has also achieved Chairman status with Medicis and Mentor Corporation. This award honors distinguished leaders in cosmetic surgery for demonstrating expertise and excellence through a high volume of aesthetic product procedures. The certification is awarded to leaders in the field of medical aesthetics and demonstrates their commitment to innovation, excellence, and the highest level of patient care. VALENTINE’S DAY AND ENGAGEMENT RINGS Februar y is of ten c onsidered a month of love bec ause Valentine’s Day falls on the 14th. That is the day when many couples are engaged to marr y, of ten symbolized by the presentation of an engagement ring. No mat ter the size or value of the engagement ring, it is an impor tant symbol of love bet ween the par ties. It can also be the most expensive piece of tangible personal proper t y a couple might own. Unfor tunately, many marriages do not last. In fact, many engagements do not result in weddings as many engagements are broken of f. This raises the question, “ Who gets the ring? ” when the marriage terminates or if a marriage never occurs. The law in this area is ver y State and fact specif ic. Some States base their law under a c ontract theor y, requiring consideration on the par t of the receiving par t y. Other States utilize a conditional gif t theor y, wherein the recipient is required to fulf il the terms necessar y to complete the gif t. For marriages that occur, States are generally uniform in f inding that the recipient of the engagement ring is entitled to keep it. This result follows bec ause the c ontract terms or the gif t requirements have all been met. Nonetheless, in the event of marital dissolution, it is impor tant to review State specif ic rules with respect to division of proper t y and the marital estate. But what about requiring a recipient to return an engagement ring when marriage never occurs? Here too, the States are split on the adoption of the c onditional gif t or c ontract theories. Florida has adopted the c onditional gif t theor y in the f irst impor tant case covering this circumstance, Gill v Shively, decided in 1975. Here the Cour t held that a donor may rec over an engagement ring if the engagement was terminated by the donee or by mutual c onsent of the par ties. The rationale is that in these circumstances, there was an implied condition that a marriage be consummated with such c ondition not having been satisf ied. While one could argue, that this simple, easy to understand rule makes sense, it may prove troublesome if one enters into the engagement with a sinister intent to cause the f iancé to engage in a more intimate relationship, and the donee calls of f the engagement for a seemingly good reason. But for now, the general rule in Florida is that the ring is returned to the donor, unless that par t y terminated the engagement or other wise acted in a fraudulent manner. During this month of love, let ’s all hope for good things for ourselves and our families. Let ’s also send best wishes to those who choose Valentine’s Day for their engagement with hopes that they marr y and build successful futures together. Happy Valentine’s Day to all. I was just involved in a car accident, now what? Accidents happen, people get hurt. If you are involved in an automobile accident, there are a few things that you should know. Immediately after an accident: 1. If you are in harm’s way, move your vehicle to a safe spot. If the vehicle cannot be moved, put your flashers on, get out of your car and find a safe location for yourself and your occupants. 2. If anyone is injured, call 911 immediately. 3. Exchange information with the other driver(s) such as license and insurance. 4. Take time to make notes of how the accident happened, location or any witnesses that may help if you are able. 5. Notify your insurance company as soon as possible. 6. Obtain a copy of your police report, typically after 7-10 days. Know the law: Insured Florida residents’ PIP (Personal Injury Protection) benefits are available for treatment in the event of an automobile accident, only if they seek care within 14 days. If a patient seeks treatment after the 14th day, there will be no coverage available in the form of PIP benefits, even though the patient pays their premiums timely. Those patients who do not have symptoms immediately and as a result, do not get care within 14 days, will have to rely on health insurance or pay cash out of their own pocket for treatment. Always get evaluated after a car accident. Symptoms or no symptoms It is important to be examined by a licensed health care provider immediately following an accident. Many patients do not experience pain right away or hope that the pain will disappear. Often times, significant underlying injuries are found on examination and or x-ray as well as MRI. Within four hours, scar tissue frequently forms at the injury site. In

addition, swelling/inflammation and muscle spasm may occur. This leads to pain, stiffness and loss of range of motion. Many patients will experience headaches, tingling and numbness in the extremities. We are flesh and bone sitting in a mass of metal averaging 3,000 lbs or more. When a crash occurs, the formula force x mass = acceleration applies. What that means is that we usually wind up absorbing the extreme force from the crash, which leads to injuries. Car seats The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) recommends that child safety seats and boosters be replaced following a moderate or severe crash in order to ensure a continued high level of crash protection for child passengers whether or not the child was in the seat at the time of the accident. There may be damage that is not visible rendering the seat structure unsafe. Who do I see after the accident? If there is an immediate need such as a medical emergency, proceed to a hospital. The medical doctors and chiropractors at Priority Medical and Rehab Centers, LLC have treated thousands of patients injured in automobile accidents for over 20 years. Our doctors are trained in the diagnosis and treatment of musculoskeletal injuries and the associated symptoms. Our facility provides consultations, examinations, digital x-ray, physiotherapy, massage, rehabilitative exercise, and medical pain management. We maintain a warmfriendly atmosphere and take the time to listen to our patients. Our goal is to quickly return the patient to pre-accident status or better.

Pediatric Associates Adds Pediatric Endocrinologist Sissi Cossio, M.D. to Growing Specialty Division

P

ediatric Associates is proud to announce that Board-Certified Pediatric Endocrinologist Sissi Cossio, M.D., FAAP, has recently merged her practice with Pediatric Associates. As a pediatric endocrinologist, Dr. Cossio will provide care to Pediatric Associates’ patients dealing with diabetes, thyroid disorders, pubertal and growth pathologies, obesity and other hormonal disorders. “Unfortunately, there is a disproportionate number of pediatric endocrinologists compared to the number of children being diagnosed with diabetes, thyroid conditions and other endocrine disorders each year,” said Dr. Cossio. “The healthcare professionals at Pediatric Associates recognized this need and I am honored to be a part of their current expansion into pediatric specialties.” Dr. Cossio attended the Universidad Nacional Federico Villarreal for medical school in her native Peru before completing her residency and fellowship at Jackson Memorial Hospital/University of Miami. “Pediatric Associates is ecstatic that Dr. Cossio is joining our growing team of specialty physicians,” said Pediatric Associates CEO Peter J. Shulman, M.D., FAAP, MBA. “She joins us at a time when childhood obesity rates and hormonal disorders are on the rise. Dr. Cossio brings extensive pediatric endocrinology experience with her and will greatly enhance our comprehensive approach to pediatric healthcare.” Dr. Cossio joins several pediatric specialists, including an allergist, hospitalists and rheumatologists, who provide care for all of Pediatric Associates’ South Florida patients. According to Dr. Shulman, Pediatric Associates hopes to add several more specialists in 2017. Pediatric Associates is Florida’s largest privately owned primary care pediatric practice, with more than 250 physicians and advanced practice practitioners and 32 convenient locations extending from Jacksonville to Miami. Our facilities offer families comprehensive services, including X-ray and state certified laboratories. We are open 365 days a year with weekend, evening and holiday hours for your convenience. Our mission is to enhance the lives of all children and their families by delivering the highest quality pediatric healthcare in a compassionate and healthy environment.

High Protein and Fiber Diet When decreasing calories by having a low-carbs diet, ensure adequate protein intake to prevent muscle loss and maintain a high fiber intake to provide satiety. The 2010 Dietary Guidelines for Americans recommend that adults eat 14 grams of fiber for every 1,000 calories consumed. Basing your diet around sources of lean protein and fiber is a tasty way to create a healthy meal plan. Creating a diet based on fiber-rich foods such as fruits, veggies and whole grains combined with lean proteins such as tofu, eggs and poultry is a delicious way to reap antioxidants and amino acids. Moreover, lean protein, vegetables, fruits and whole grains are waist- friendly thanks to their nutrients and low calorie content. Soaring with fiber and minerals, fruits and veggies are a water-rich, healthy way to naturally add sweet flavor to any dish. Low on the glycemic index, they can increase energy levels and leave you feeling refreshed and cleansed. Other great sources of fiber include beans, legumes and whole grains such as brown rice and quinoa. Protein, an essential nutrient for cell repair and maintenance comes from a vast array of tasty sources such as chicken, turkey, fish, eggs, tofu, nuts, beans, seeds, grains, Greek yogurt, low fat dairy and lean beef. Combine sources rich in fiber and protein, which when paired together will stabilize your blood sugar and keeping you satiated. Moderation is always best; be sure to drink enough water when eating high fiber foods to keep from causing a blockage in your system. Be sure to reach for lean sources of protein and keep an eye on the cholesterol you consume in protein-rich foods such as red meat, whole dairy and other high fat foods. Beans Full of B vitamins, beans are an extremely low-fat food while also a good source of complete protein. Use beans as a higher-fiber substitute for rice. Most beans are similar in nutritional content. One cup of boiled black beans contains 1 gram of fat, 15 grams of fiber and 15 grams of protein.

To conTAcT ciTY nEws, cAll lUcY (EdiToR) AT 954-255-5226

Lentils Similar to beans, lentils are members of the legume family and are extremely high in fiber and protein. One cup of cooked lentils contains 1 gram of fat, 16 grams of fiber and 18 grams of protein. quinoa Primarily used in South America as a vegetarian source of protein, quinoa is a healthy grain that is commercially available but not commonly used in the United States. While often overlooked, quinoa is a great source of fiber and complete protein. One cup of cooked quinoa contains 4 grams of fat, 5 grams of fiber and 8 grams of protein. Whole-grain bread Great for sandwiches or a general snack, whole-grain breads are a great source of fiber, and they typically contain at least 5 grams of protein per slice. Some low-fat types of bread even include small amounts of healthy omega-3 fatty acids through flax seed. Avoid white bread and “wheat” bread that doesn’t contain whole grains, as these types are not as nutritious as whole grain options. Oatmeal Oatmeal is a valuable food because it contains both soluble and insoluble fiber. Soluble fiber helps lower cholesterol while insoluble fiber aids in digestion. In addition, oatmeal is a grain that requires water in the preparation process. The extra water helps ensure proper hydration and makes the meal more filling without adding overall calories. One cup of cooked oatmeal contains 4 grams of fat, 4 grams of fiber and 6 grams of protein. Although not as high in protein as some other sources, 6 grams of protein per serving is still sizable for a non-meat food item. Before starting any diet, be sure to talk to your doctor to determine if the low carbs, high protein approach is right for you. FAMILY FEATURES

Students Prosper from STEM Education (Family Features) Education is particularly critical for today’s students in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) fields, as the number of jobs with an emphasis in STEM is expected to grow significantly over the next 10 years, according to the National Science and Math Initiative.

understand practical applications of their studies.” Since starting the program, Rochelle Middle School’s parents and teachers have noticed a change in students, as they seem more engaged and excited to learn. Many even stay after school for an independent study course with their science teacher.

With the right funding, schools across the country are putting an emphasis on STEM education and looking for new ways to make a difference in the lives of their students and their communities. For Rochelle Middle School in Rochelle, Illinois, a $25,000 grant from the America’s Farmers Grow Rural Education program, sponsored by the Monsanto Fund, enabled the school to enhance its science curriculum by exposing students to STEMrelated career opportunities and preparing students for the workforce. The program included the purchase of a 3D printer to introduce students to the technology and bring their designs and ideas to life.

Other Americas Farmers Grow Rural Education grants have helped schools expand their science curriculum by building greenhouses, continuing a remote-operatedvehicle science program, developing a livestock learning laboratory on a high school campus and others.

Shortly after the program began, the students learned about a local farmer who lost his arm in an accident while working in the field and they began working on a program to use the 3D printer to build a fully-functioning prosthesis for him.

“STEM education is a vital foundation for the future of students and communities,” said Al Mitchell, Monsanto Fund president. “With the support of local farmers, we are proud to provide resources to engage and excite students in their STEM educations, and help them

www.CityNewsMagaziNe.CoM

“The grant helped enhance our STEM offering to students and show them what their futures could hold,” said Vic Worthington, Rochelle Middle School science instructor. “In middle school, it’s easy for these students to go to school each day, but not understand the full picture of possibilities of their futures. Through this program, schools are able to put possibilities in front of students they couldn’t have previously dreamed of.” The Grow Rural Education program is seeking nominations from farmers through April 1, 2017, to help provide rural public schools with funding for STEM projects. Since the program began partnering with farmers in 2011, more than $11 million has been awarded to help rural schools in need. Buddy My name is Buddy. I’m a 5 year old papillon-sheltie mix adopted from the Broward Humane Society. I love treats, my owners, and their pet rabbit. I don’t like baths, vet visits, and cats.

Should Your Pet Be our Pet of the Month?

Buddy Buddy is a 6 year old German Shepherd. He loves his mom and dad very much. His favorite toy is a red ball that’s always with him. He’s very protective of his mom and her new baby boy Zachary. He loves going to the groomer.

Dante Our Valentine, Dante, will be delivering flowers and cooking lobster this V-Day! He is a 9 year old Pomeranian

Welcoming a Puppy Home

BEST OF CORAL SPRINGS & PARKLAND 2015 BEST PET GROOMING

Tips for new puppy parents on transition, toys, food and more (Family Features) Nothing is more heartwarming than the first warm nuzzle from a new puppy. With new pets, however, come new responsibilities and opportunities, which can often lead to New Year’s resolutions involving new furry friends. “No matter the season, it’s always a moving and emotional experience when a puppy finds a new home,” said Eran Cohen, chief customer experience officer at PetSmart. “Our passionate associates are available to help bring pet parents closer to their pets so they can live more fulfilled lives.” To help puppy parents welcome their pets home – and keep New Year’s commitments – PetSmart, the largest specialty pet retailer across North America, offers this expert advice on nutrition, socialization, essentials and health care to help keep pets happy and healthy.

Find a Veterinarian

A veterinarian should be your first call if your puppy gets into something that could potentially harm him or her. Vets are also great resources to keep you up-to-date on puppy care, like vaccination timing. Use a tool like the free askPETMD app, available in the Apple App and Google Play stores, to find a veterinarian near you.

ID Your Pet

While pets are getting acclimated to their home, and with people going in and out, it can be easy for them to slip out a door. Be prepared in case they embark on an unplanned journey around the neighborhood. To ensure you are reunited, outfit your pup with proper ID, including a personalized ID tag.

Pup-Proof Your Home

Dogs love to chew, whether it’s on shoes or something more dangerous like wiring or extension cords. To protect them and promote positive chewing experiences, use toys or treats to occupy their time and allow them to chew safely, such as a Puppy Bone Starter Toy Kit. It’s also important to place household products like trash, laundry detergent and cleaning supplies out your pup’s reach.

www.CityNewsMagaziNe.CoM

Give Puppies Their Own Space According to a survey commissioned by PetSmart and conducted by Wakefield Research, 47 percent of U.S. dog owners let their puppy sleep in bed with them seven nights per week. However, when it’s time for puppies to rest on their own, a puppy crate can perform double duty, providing puppies their own area away from stressors to nap and serving as a structure that promotes potty training.

Give Your Dog Time to Acclimate

Socialization is critical during a pup’s early years. While everyone may be ready to meet the new member of your family, consider introducing them to one or two people at a time, so the puppy can get to know them and warm up to their scent.

Research Nutrition

It may be tempting to feed a puppy human food, but they require specially formulated food and often have different eating schedules than an adult dog. Do your research, read labels and ask questions. Consider leading natural pet lifestyle brands, like Only Natural Pet, which offer formulas such as Puppy Power Feast food, as well as a variety of treats.

Invest in Training

Consistent training is an important responsibility of a puppy parent. Dogs crave love and praise, and a properly trained pooch will better understand what’s expected of him or her. If necessary, get help from puppy training experts to help ensure all family members are able to live happily in one harmonious pack. Find more tips for welcoming a new pet into your home this year at PetSmart. com or download PetSmart’s mobile app, which tailors content to help guide pet parents based on your pet profile.

President Ava Parker

ven as 2017 begins, Rosemary Krieger of boca Raton is still in shock, she admits, from an event that took place in late 2016.

From left, Sarah Doyle, Woman Volunteer of the Year Luncheon chair; Kirstin Stanley, Junior League of Boca Raton president; Lifetime Achievement Award winner Rosemary Krieger; Mindy Shikiar, vice president of Oncology and Ambulatory Services and Business Development at Boca Raton Regional Hospital and Dr. Kathy Schilling, medical director at the Christine E. Lynn Women’s Health & Wellness Institute. (Photo by Dale King)

when a shaky, stunned and teary-eyed Rosemary reached the podium, she thanked the nearly 1,000 people in the audience at the 29thAnnual woman Volunteer of the Year Luncheon & Fashion show at the boca Raton Resort & club. she had particularly kind words for her husband, ben, longtime partner in giving, and her three children who flew in from around the country: sons Kenneth, from New York and gregory, from Delaware, and daughter, catherine Krieger-Nelson, from Dallas. “I’ve gotten flowers, emails and calls,” said Rosemary in a recent interview, her smiling face still beaming with excitement. “i didn’t expect to get the award. i am still in shock.” many in the audience were themselves in tears as they stood and applauded Rosemary, whose beneficence has helped dozens of nonprofits, from AVDA (Aid to Victims of Domestic Abuse), the YmcA, march of Dimes, george snow scholarship Fund, wayne barton center, st. Jude church, boca Helping Hands and Florence Fuller child Development center, to name a few. Education and Arts Leadership

Among those at her table was AVDA executive Director Pam o’brien, who nominated Rosemary for the award. “she is a true giver who thinks of others before herself,” said O’Brien. “She wants to make sure that women and children in need have a safe place to go.”

the generous lady from boca has a simple philosophy about giving. “You don’t think about it, you just do it. I has to come from the heart.” coincidentally, barely a month after receiving the honor, Rosemary has jumped back into an AVDA cause. she is on the committee planning the Feb. 21 “Heart of a Woman” luncheon fundraiser at the Boca Resort. The speaker will be Michelle Knight, one of the three women abducted, imprisoned and repeatedly raped by Ariel castro at his home in cleveland. Nabbed by the suspect between 2002 and 2004 were Knight (who has changed her name legally to Lilly Rose Lee), Georgina DeJesus and Amanda Berry. They finally escaped in 2013 when Castro was captured, tried and sentenced to life plus 1,000 years in prison. He committed suicide behind bars.

Creating Untouchable Self-Esteem in Our Children What is self-esteem? Simply put, self-esteem is a way of thinking and feeling about yourself. Today we are going to focus on supporting our children to cultivate and maintain untouchable self-esteem. Do you ever feel like your child’s self-esteem rises and falls based on their grades in school? Does their selfesteem crash based on how many followers they have on social media? Do they beat themselves up if they don’t make the soccer team? How our children feel about themselves often comes from what is happening outside of them. The KEY to cultivating untouchable self-esteem is to understand it is based on what is going on inside of them. Think of it like this – your self-esteem is not what you do, it’s who you are. So if they attach how they feel about themselves to how they perform in school, what parties they go to, and what teams they make, then self-esteem will inevitably be a yo-yo. A rollercoaster dependent on the last “good” or “bad” thing that happened. We need to help shift them from an external focus to an internal focus.

Tip #3. Teach them to art of disconnection. For example, your daughter comes home from school with a F on a test. She starts saying things like, “I’m so stupid. I’m such a failure.” Explain that she is not the failure. The failed test is simply feedback on what areas she still needs to practice. Tip #4. They are as unique as their fingerprint. Work with them to create a list of all the things that makes them special and unique. This will help them focus on the positive and create self-love. Tip #5. Rid them of comparison-itus. When they compare themselves to kids around them, it promotes the rollercoaster self-esteem. If they compare with someone they see as “less than them,” they feel high. If they

Tip #6. Encourage positive self-talk. Be aware of your self-talk and what they observe. Teach them that what they say to themselves is the most important thing. Teach them to be their own best friend. Self-Esteem is not something we can give to our children, however it is absolutely something we can cultivate and teach them how to develop for themselves.

Arthritis of the big toe joint is more technically known as hallux limitus or hallux rigidus. When motion of the big toe joint is somewhat limited, it is called “hallux limitus”. When there is significant loss of range of motion of the big toe joint, it is referred to as “hallux rigidus”. Both conditions are characterized by the loss of big toe motion, bone spur formation around the joint, and narrowing of the joint. All of these symptoms are consistent with arthritis of the joint. The arthritis can be caused by activity level, trauma, and biomechanics of the foot. Clinically, you may see a “bump” on the top of the joint. Treatment includes shoes with a roomy toe box and rigid sole, padding, custom made orthotics, anti-inflammatory medications, occasional cortisone injections and taping by your podiatrist. Surgery is an option when conservative treatments fail. The surgical procedure will depend on your x-rays. Some options available are shaving off the bone spur (cheilectomy), joint implants (part of the joint or the whole joint), or fusion of the joint. WE ARE MOVING!!! We are happy to announce that we will be moving locations in the near future. Our future office address will be: 2929 University Drive, Suite 106, Coral Springs 33065. 5 Tips to Tackle a Tasty Game Day Menu (Family Features) Just like your favorite sports team, hosting a winning big-game party or tailgate takes planning, preparation and teamwork. To make your festivities fun-filled, remember these entertaining tips that are sure to score big with your fans. Scatter the refreshments. Help direct movement and traffic flow by setting up food stations. Using different rooms or areas helps prevent congestion and encourages guests to mingle. Try placing finger foods and other appetizers in a couple of locations, beverages in another area and desserts in yet another space. Embrace variety. Take into account taste preferences and dietary needs, and have an assortment of food and drinks available. Offer spicy options along with less seasoned dishes, both indulgent and better-for-you treats, plus an array of beverages for drinkers and nondrinkers alike. Build your roster. If your party is a potluck, encourage guests to sign up for dishes so you don’t end up with multiple versions of the same thing. Create a discussion group online, or simply ask guests to indicate what they’ll bring along with their RSVP. Don’t forget the dips. Wings are a tailgating staple, and dips are a great way to complement those zesty flavors or cool the heat, but you may find yourself in a

team rivalry when it comes to the preferred dip at the game day bash: ranch or bleu cheese dressing? Both pair well with a range of wing flavors, so these dips are sure to be crowd pleasers. The delicious combination of fresh herb and vegetable flavors make Litehouse Homestyle Ranch a perfect party choice, and Litehouse Chunky Bleu Cheese features fresh buttermilk, homemade mayonnaise and a blend of spices as the backdrop for award-winning artisan blue cheese chunks that will make your fellow sports fans cheer for more.

1/2 teaspoon Litehouse Instantly Fresh Garlic 3 tablespoons water, divided 1/2 cup brown sugar 1 tablespoon cornstarch sliced green onions, for garnish sesame seeds, for garnish celery sticks (optional) Litehouse Homestyle Ranch and Chunky Bleu Cheese Dressing Heat oven to 400 F.

Expand on tradition. Tailgating is a time-honored tradition, and the food lineup is often based on familiar fare. Along with those fan favorites, don’t be afraid to put some new flavors into play, such as these Sticky Sesame Chicken Wings that add a tangy ethnic flair to traditional wings. Find more game day recipes at LitehouseFoods.com.

In large bag, combine flour and salt. Add chicken wings and shake to coat. Discard any leftover flour.

Sticky Sesame Chicken Wings Yield: 4 servings Prep time: 10 minutes Cook time: 40 minutes 1/4 1/4 20 3 2

cup flour teaspoon salt chicken wings tablespoons soy sauce tablespoons sesame oil

Line baking sheet with foil and spray with pan spray of your choice. Place wings in single layer on baking sheet. Bake wings 40-45 minutes, turning halfway through. In sauce pan over medium heat, combine soy sauce, sesame oil, garlic, 2 tablespoons water and brown sugar. Whisk together remaining water and cornstarch, and pour into sauce. Bring to boil then simmer until thickened. When wings are done, toss with sauce, garnish with green onion and sesame seeds, and serve with celery sticks, ranch and bleu cheese dressing.

Find Better Balance for Family Meals this Year COMMUNITY NEWS

(Family Features) This New Year, set a realistic resolution to take time to sit down with your family and eat balanced meals together. A few simple solutions and a dash of inspiration are all you need to set the tone for a year of health and wellness. Last year, Americans were only meeting the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s MyPlate recommendations for vegetables, fruit, protein, dairy and grain consumption one week out of the entire year. While many families try to cook nutritious meals at home, a balanced plate can be hard to achieve. Educational programs, such as Nestlé’s Balance Your Plate, make it simple to create delicious and balanced meals by pairing frozen prepared meals and pizzas with madefrom-scratch side dishes, which makes meeting the dietary guidelines a more attainable goal. Frozen entrees are a convenient starting point for a well-rounded meal. “It’s so important to me that we sit down as a family and have a nutritious meal,” said Kim Stoegbauer, creative director and founder of The TomKat Studio, who created a few easy ways to add some special touches to your next family dinner. By pairing Stouffer’s Lasagna with Meat & Sauce, made with ingredients you would find in your own kitchen cupboard, with a homemade Panzanella Salad and Garlic Roasted Asparagus with Tomatoes and

Balsamic, Stoegbauer demonstrates how easy it is to create a family-friendly meal without the hassle.

In bowl, whisk together garlic, mustard, vinegar, salt and pepper with remaining olive oil to make vinaigrette.

“It’s a frozen entree that you can feel good about feeding your family, especially paired with some delicious and easy-to-prepare sides,” Stoegbauer said.

In large bowl, toss ingredients together, making sure to coat all ingredients with vinaigrette. Serve immediately.

As digital platforms continue to grow in popularity, many of those who previously believed that digital would replace print are coming to recognize a new reality. As Nicolas Brown stated in an article about millennials and print, "The more our lives are influenced by digital media, the more we are drawn to print as a retreat from online space."

What Makes Print Appealing? The answer is that print is an enjoyable experience. It's tactile. It's immersive. It requires 21% less cognitive effort to process than reading on a screen. In fact, in our fast-paced world, print is now regarded as luxurious and indulgent. Pop-up ads, flashing banners and other intrusive forms of advertising make screen-based reading at many websites an unpleasant experience. And with hundreds of emails vying for attention in the inbox, many people spend very little time reading (or deleting!) each one.

For Local Marketing and Advertising Print Is Still King When you advertise with community news magazines like City News Magazine and Boca’s Best Magazine, you become the destination location. No one needs to find you by searching based on some key words where you are competing with every other company in your category – probably even big national brands that buy placement on the search engines.

With City News Magazine and Boca’s Best Magazine you will reach over 65,000 highly targeted local homes and businesses. Based on national averages that distribution will deliver your promotional message to over 150,000 people each month. Your job is to capture them with an effective call to action that will result in a visit to your business or a stop at your website or facebook page where your digital presence can supplement and support your direct marketing campaign. www.CityNewsMagazine.com * www.facebook.com/CityNewsMagazine www.BocasBestMagazine.com * www.facebook.com/BocasBest

Make Each Medium You Market With Accountable Whether or not your small business advertising will be effective depends not only on what you say, but where you say it. While your message and creative delivery is important, you must get it to the right audience, multiple times and for an effective price. Study media kits of radio and TV stations, websites, billboards and publications to find those that have the most customers you want to reach. Quality impressions are more important than quantity. WXYZ radio station may offer 100,000 listeners, but only 5,000 may be your potential customers, giving you 95 percent waste. A 20,000-circulation magazine offers a smaller audience than WXYZ, but an examination of its media kit might reveal that all of its likely readers are your potential customers. Calculate the cost per thousand to reach your customers. Cheapest is not always best. Divide the number of viewers or readers you reach with one medium by the cost. This will let you assess advertising media in an apples-to-apples comparison. One magazine may be cheaper than another, but your cost to reach 1,000 readers could be higher, based on its total circulation or the number of your target customers it reaches.

Proof of Performance Regardless of the medium you are utilizing, demand PROOF OF PERFORMANCE. An advertising and marketing vehicle can make all kinds of claims to try and win your business. Just because they “say” it does not make it so. City News Magazine and Boca’s Best Magazine offer monthly proof of distribution by providing copies of U.S. Postal receipts each month.

Here is the January 2017 Mailing Receipt for Boca’s Best Magazine

Total pieces mailed: 26,283 Demand proof of performance. If a vendor you use will not provide verification of distribution then it is unlikely they are distributing what they claim.

The Art of Crafting 40 Years in the Making: The Coral Springs Craft Guild By Brooke Bitton

F

or the members of the Coral Springs Craft Guild, “Being crafty is not a hobby. It’s a way of life!” 40 years and still crafting, the Guild members have a lot to celebrate! It all started with J.P. Taravella, and the developer of Coral Springs, Coral Ridge Properties, who, in 1977, proposed the organization of a group of craftsmen. Lo and behold, the Guild was born, and quickly grew to 100 people! As membership grew, so did expenses. In an effort to raise money for projects, insurance, and other expenditures, the Guild put together its first holiday craft show in 1978. To this day, members of the Guild continue to put their scissors to paper, their needles to fabric (I could go on and on!) to make the holiday show one of the best. All funds from the show go directly back to the Guild. The show takes place in October, and includes quality crafts, ranging from Fall to Christmas and Chanukah, as well as kid’s crafts, décor, jewelry, and baked goods from the Little Red Basket Bakery. The Guild’s story doesn’t end here…the members also do a lot to give back to the City of Coral Springs. One of their biggest achievements is offering a scholarship to high school seniors who live in Coral Springs, and who plan on obtaining a college degree in art. Drum roll, please…the Guild has allotted over $60,000 in scholarships! These crafty crafters and civic-minded leaders continue to pay it forward by collecting canned goods for a local food bank, knitting red caps for babies for the American Heart Association, making lap blankets for senior citizens, and creating cards for veterans. Moreover, the Guild has donated gift cards, art and craft supplies, and new games to the Ronald McDonald House. It isn’t enough to just write about the Coral Springs Craft Guild. Some members were interviewed about their amazing experiences with the Guild, and had A LOT to share! Angelina Scarbrough, the Guild’s First Vice-President, says, “The Guild fulfilled several things I was looking for. It gave me a wonderful sense of camaraderie, an outlet to donate my time through its charitable endeavors, and it provided me with a way to sell the crafts I did create”. Her favorite craft that she has made was Santa, designed using vintage quilts. “There’s a story in every one of those quilts”, she says. Marilyn McMullan, the Guild’s President, sums up the perks of being a member of the Guild, which include, “Making fun crafts, establishing lifetime friendships, gaining satisfaction through the projects that you create, and having the opportunity to teach your crafts to others”.

70

FEBRUARY 2017

If you are considering being a member of the Coral Springs Craft Guild, please READ ON! 1) Men and women 18 and older are welcome to join! 2) Membership is $45 a year 3) There are two types of members: -General members are required to make and sell their crafts for the annual holiday show, and participate in monthly craft projects and meetings. -Social members are not required to make and sell their crafts for the annual holiday show; they participate in monthly craft projects and meetings. 4) The Guild hosts its meetings on the third Wednesday of every month (excluding December) at 7:00 P.M. at Cypress Hammocks Park in Coral Springs, 1300 Coral Springs Drive, Coral Springs. The Guild prides itself on its unique roundtable craft lessons that are offered. Crafters of all backgrounds teach their tricks of the trade. Past projects have included glass block scarecrows, heart wreaths, apple mason jars, and flower paintings. “The first time I ever taught a craft project, I was so happy and honored that everyone had such fun making it and truly loved the finished product”, says Marilyn. The roundtable events are open to the public (and spots fill up fast!).

For more information about the Coral Springs Craft Guild, you can visit the website, www.coralspringscraftguild.com, as well as their Facebook page (don’t forget to “Like” the page!) Also, mark your calendars for March 18th, which is the annual Coral Springs Festival of the Arts! Stop by and visit the Guild’s booth to learn more about FREE programs, and how to become a member. In addition, kids will have the chance to “Rock the Walk”, by coloring a rock of their choice. Just like the Guild, it’s time to get crafty!

Protecting your personal information is your best line of defense against health care fraud. Treat Medicare, Medicaid and Social Security numbers like credit card numbers. Never give them to a stranger and don’t carry your cards unless you need them for appointments. Medicare doesn’t call or visit to sell you anything. Outside of a trusted health care setting, never give this information to anyone who asks for it. 2. Detect No matter how careful you are, you may be targeted for fraud. Always review your Medicare statements closely. Things to look for include charges for something you didn’t purchase or receive, duplicate charges and charges for services not ordered by your doctor. Compare these documents to your personal records and receipts. Recording medical visits and procedures in a journal or on a calendar can help you keep track of what happened at each appointment and make it easier to spot inaccuracies. 3. Report If you suspect you’ve been a target of fraud, report it. This can help you and others at risk for fraud. If you have questions about your Medicare statements, call your health care provider. If you’re uncomfortable calling or are not satisfied with the response, help is available through your local Senior Medicare Patrol (SMP). SMP volunteers work with Medicare beneficiaries and their families and caregivers to stop health care fraud, errors and abuse. You can also report suspicious calls and direct general questions through this resource. You can find your local SMP program by calling 1-877-8082468 or at SMPresource.org. Suspected fraud can also be reported to 1-800-Medicare or by calling 1-800-HHSTIPS. Don’t hesitate if you need help Funded by the Administration for Community Living, part of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, the SMP program provides outreach, counseling and education by highly trained volunteers in a variety of locations. For free, confidential support, contact your local SMP program.
