“Varicose Veins are more than skin deep”
By Rachel Galvin
O
ur body does so much day in and day out, and most of that work goes unseen. Our veins have an important job, carrying our blood back and forth to our heart only to be pumped out again. As we age, this daily toil can become more apparent as veins reveal themselves like road maps, especially on our legs. When they become deeper and wider, such as the case of varicose veins, that is when it can be cause for concern. Not only can varicose veins be unsightly, but they also can be a signal that something else is happening within the body to cause them. Each vein has a tiny valve that helps it do its job, but there can be leaks and the valve can malfunction causing the blood to back up and the vein to bulge. Sometimes, having varicose veins can mean the person with them has cardiovascular problems. Many people will seek out a doctor to get rid of the unsightly veins, but sometimes the doctor they consult with is more of a plastic surgeon or dermatologist and does not probe deeper to understand the root cause of the issue. But Dr. Ariel Soffer, M.D., FACC, knows “varicose veins are more than skin deep.” He is board certified in cardiovascular disease and, for over 20 years, he has focused his practice on aspects of the cardiovascular system, especially varicose veins.

Compression socks might be used in recovery as well, Kustin adds.
He said that one of the big culprits is inactivity. “When you are on your feet eight to 12 hours a day, not moving ... inactivity is the biggest culprit, or sitting with legs crossed...It also can be genetic,” he says.
According to company spokesperson Adam Kustin, people who have issues with their veins often complain of achy legs or numbness, among other symptoms. In order to ascertain the underlying problem, patients who come into our office undergo an ultrasound. “You and I can walk in and both have the same degree of problems with our veins] and there is no way to tell [the underlying issue] based on the surface,” says Kustin. “It is important to see a doctor.”
sclerotherapy, we inject a saline solution and the blood is magically redirected. It depends on the severity,” he says. “The laser is super accurate and highly effective. It is a low risk procedure.”
Mr. Kustin explained that exercising and elevating your legs periodically will help with blood flow. He also recommended compression socks, which he said act like a reverse funnel redirecting blood to the heart. Also weight management is important. The procedure to fix varicose veins can be relatively simple. Most procedures involve closing the vein, sometimes repairing it. “If it is a secondary or tertiary vein, we can close it up; a laser heats it and clamps it shut. If we do

Besides working with veins, The Soffer Health Institute also handle other cardiovascular issues, including primary care, everything from allergies to working with weight management. They work with senior care and also have a concierge service, which allows patients basically to “pay for play,” getting special services like having no wait time, obtaining greater access to the doctor, getting an annual physical and more. Dr. Soffer also keeps his staff up-to-date with the latest medical developments and shares his knowledge on an ABC News Health segment called “Dr. Soffer’s Second Opinion,” and elsewhere. Soffer Health Institute began in Aventura and now there are several locations, including one in Deerfield Beach at 1877 W. Hillsboro Blvd. They plan to open a Weston location next. Members of the staff speaks Spanish, Russian, Hebrew, Creole and Portuguese. For more information, call 305-792-0555 or visit www.sofferhealth.com.

More than a Race… ‘Race For Women’s Wellness Half Marathon & 5K’ To Raise Funds For Mammogram Screenings For Local Women By NicoL JeNKiNS
A
s the start of the race begins, a sea of runners and walkers dressed in pink gather together in the fight against breast cancer.
Thousands of supporters will join this year’s Race for Women’s Wellness Half Marathon & 5K on Saturday, March 25th. The Half Marathon kicks off at 6 a.m. and the 5K begins at 7:30 a.m. Both start at the Coral Springs Tennis Center located at Sportsplex Athletic Complex, 2575 Sportsplex Drive Coral Springs, Florida 33065. The Race for Women’s Wellness Half Marathon & 5K serves as a fundraiser for the Lisa Boccard Breast Cancer Fund, a locally-based charity that helps women get mammogram screenings and additional breast treatments who wouldn’t other wise be able to afford such care. The Lisa Boccard Breast Cancer Fund was founded in 2003 by former Coral Springs Mayor Vincent Boccard and his wife Terry in support of Vincent’s sister Lisa and her fight with breast cancer. “Last year, we detected 9 positive breast cancer screenings. It was the most detection we have had since 2010,” says Lisa. The 5K started 12 years ago by two Broward Health Coral Springs physicians that wanted to raise funds to provide free mammograms to women in financial need in our community, according to Barbara Epes, Regional Manager for Marketing at Broward Health Coral Springs. Then, the Half Marathon was started 5 years ago by the City of Coral Springs. They decided to merge the two races and now the City is a sponsor along with the hospital and the funds raised will benefit the Lisa Boccard Breast Cancer Fund. The fundraising goal is $40,000. Thanks to the many community supporters, they have screened over 2,000 women of which 90 have been identified with breast cancer. These women have received treatment and thankfully are still alive today. This year’s event will be bigger and better. There will be a vendor village for spectators to enjoy that will offer vendor booths with giveaways from local businesses including City News. Activities for the kids will be available such as a slide and obstacle course. For the adults, a beer garden from Barrel of Monks in Boca Raton, with Witty in Pink, a specially brewed pink beer for this Race. Participants are encouraged to wear pink from tutus to socks! The non-profit Florida Breast Cancer Foundation will be seeking donations of

toys, electronics and clothing. Gotsneakers.com, a sneaker recycling organization, is looking for sneaker donations. For every pair donated, $1 will be donated to the Lisa Boccard Breast Cancer Fund. Women, men, individuals, teams, runners and walkers are invited to join this race. There will be awards given for fastest race time and most money raised. “The event has grown not only in the number of walkers and runners, but also the community support. More people and local businesses want to be a part of the race, and the runners are coming from all over the world,” said Lisa. For Lisa, this race has a special meaning. She has been fighting the cancer battle for 26 years. At 29, the Coral Springs resident was first diagnosed with a life threatening form of breast cancer, Stage 3. She fought back and was in remission for 11 years, but was later diagnosed with metastatic breast cancer. In the last 14 years, the cancer has recurred four times, most recently last year on her intestines. But she remains optimistic. “I am on a new medicine and the cancer markers are dropping which indicate the cancer is dissipating.” Her brave fight has inspired many cancer patients, caregivers and survivors to join her in this race. For many of the runners, this race provides hope and unified support.

There has been a family walking in honor of their mother for the last four years, which has created a tradition among the family in honoring their mother. It’s wonderful to see it grow from a local 5K to what it’s becoming. Deducting Medical Costs For An Elderly Parent
M
any Baby Boomers are now faced with assisting an elderly parent with medical and longterm care expenses. If you are in this position, can you deduct the costs you pay for your elderly parent? The short answer is often yes, but it depends. There are numerous tax hurdles to overcome. Even then a deduction may provide limited or no tax savings.
The rules are: If a taxpayer provides more than 50% of a parent’s support they can deduct the medical costs paid on their behalf. This is the case even if the parent cannot be claimed as a dependent for purposes of the dependent exemption. If the parent is a dependent for medical purposes then:

Medical expenses paid directly by the child are deducted on their return as if they incurred the expenses. Medical expenses are subject to a 10% reduction, or a 7.5% reduction (for 2016) if you were born before January 2, 1951. There is an addback for alternative minimum tax of the full amount allowed, or if you or your spouse is 65 or older, 2.5% of adjusted gross income if less.
So what does all this mean? First, all expenses paid must be analyzed to determine how much is medical and how much is maintenance. Mere in home assistance may not be deductible. Payments for medical care are deductible, along with certain expenses paid for a person who is “chronically ill”. Chronically ill means the person needs to be protected due to cognitive impairment, or because they are unable to perform at least two activities of daily living (eating, toilet,

bathing, dressing, continence). Assuming you meet all these tests and have a meaningful deduction, do you get a benefit? Since the expenses are treated as if incurred by the payor, limitations on deducting medical costs must be exceeded. Examine Schedule A of Form 1040 to determine if the medical deduction exceeds the phase out based upon AGI. If this hurdle is passed, look at the alternative minimum tax (“AMT”) calculation to insure a benefit remains available. The combination of the deduction phase out and AMT may result in no net benefit. If the child payor gets no tax benefit, determine if there is a way for the elderly parent to recognize taxable income, to secure some tax benefit for expenses paid. To make this happen, the parent would need to pay their own medical expenses. Gifts could cover expenses. If the parent has retirement plans, consider withdrawing funds in excess of the required amount to generate taxable income. Bottom line, if the payor has significant taxable income, paying an elderly parent’s medical expenses may generate little or no tax benefit. In this case, review the elderly parent’s tax return and financial wherewithal to create some measure of tax savings. March Madness
COMMUNITY NEWS
Mayor Hunschofsky Throughout the year, there are “big ticket” events of importance that show up on your calendar. Like the New Year’s holiday in January or big sporting events like the Super Bowl in February, Parkland has its own banner occurrence early in the year - March has “Strategic Planning” for the City of Parkland. Ok, while our strategic planning sessions are not something as prominent on everyone’s calendar like the Super Bowl, the Oscars, or a holiday, it’s something that is significant to the elected officials and staff in the City of Parkland. And our strategic planning sessions are very important to the future of our great city.
• ACCENT FURNITURE • FRAMED ART • HOME ACCESSORIES • LAMPS • SILK TREES/PLANTS • TABLE FOUNTAINS
The key to both knowing where you want to go and how you want to get there is planning. Our City’s strategic planning is “where the rubber meets the road” in Parkland local government, in much the same way as setting a strategic plan does in private businesses. Our city’s strategic plan maps out the course we are setting to achieve a vision and mission for Parkland. These sessions are where Parkland elected officials, elected by the people, meet with staff and strategize how best to move the City forward on behalf of our residents who voted us into office. When you hear about our City Commission passing the annual budget, that budget is the monetary support for the priorities that were determined in strategic planning. If anyone has any doubts about whether it is beneficial to contact your local elected officials, strategic planning answers that question – YES! When I hear from Parkland residents, I remember their suggestions, comments and concerns. And when the Commission and I roll up our sleeves and begin the tedious but vital work of strategic planning, we remember what we have been told by the residents who contacted us about an issue. In strategic planning, we look at things like the projected build-out of our City, which is one of the last places in Broward County to be developed. We look at factors that keep our community special and safe, and keep our property values high. Safety and the increasing need for police and fire-rescue resources are things we discuss and work through, as are infrastructure, traffic flow and community improvements. We will emerge from our strategic planning session with a five-year forecast. This is the forecast that we will tweak next year and the year after, always ensuring that Parkland is on the right path. Every month I close this column with my contact information. I encourage you to communicate with me because I do remember what people tell me and we will talk about your concerns, issues and suggestions at our strategic planning in March. You can find out more about our City at www. cityofparkland.org and www.facebook.com/copfl, but to reach me directly, e-mail me at chunschofsky@cityofparkland.org. Thank you in advance for your input in the strategic planning process.

The Northwest Regional Library: Where Adventure Awaits By: Brooke Bitton
A
ccording to Albert Einstein, “The only thing that you absolutely have to know, is the location of the library.” The Northwest Regional Library (located at 3151 N University Drive in Coral Springs) is “abound” with books, from mysteries and science fiction, to cookbooks and autobiographies. The library not only serves as a temple of knowledge…it also provides entertainment through its vast array of DVD’s, CD’s (yes, they still exist!), books on tape, and magazines. In addition, it serves to bring the community together through its myriad of events. According to Carol Russo, the Northwest Library Regional Manager, “Every day is a new show”. As the needs of patrons continue to grow, so do the services offered. The Northwest Regional Library brings people of all ages and walks of life together through its free workshops and events. Coloring classes, and chess tournaments, and board games, OH MY! The library has it all! Some of the most popular classes that have been introduced within the library are computer classes, which serve to enhance people’s skills so they can apply for jobs and succeed in the workplace, and ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages) classes. A new addition to the Northwest Regional Library is the Creation Station. Located on the 2nd floor of the library, it includes a 3-D printer, musical instruments, recording devices, and photography equipment. The Creation Station offers classes based on one’s interests. In February, people were invited to create light-up Valentine’s Day cards. Ursula Bouroncle, the Northwest Regional Library Senior Assistant in the Adult Reference Section, teaches some of the classes that are offered in the Creation Station. “The Creation Station appeals to all ages, whether it is couples, families, kids, or students”. Though she has a law background, Ursula is dedicated to her job at the library. She not only looks for new ways to engage the community within the library, but she also goes out into the community to bring people into the library. For Ursula, it is all about the customer interaction, and the ability to welcome a diverse group of people through the doors of the Northwest Regional Library. Katie Reusze, the Head of the Adult Reference Section, believes that there is “Something for everyone” at the Northwest Regional Library. If you are looking for an amazing book to dive into, here are some of the most popular books and authors, as well as some suggested reads from the library staff: • Diary of a Wimpy Kid (series) • Dork Diaries (series) • ANYTHING JAMES PATTERSON! • J.K. Rowling’s Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them • Born a Crime (Trevor Noah, Host of the Daily Show)

• Dave Barry (Children/Adult Author-also writes for the Miami Herald) • Carlos Ruiz Zafon (Spanish Author) • John Grisham (Thrillers) • Daniel Silva (Thriller/Espionage) • J.R.R. Tolkien (Fantasy) Autumn Dec, who is in charge of Literacy and Language Classes, believes that the Northwest Regional Library, “brings people in the community together who normally wouldn’t interact with one another”, whether it be through book discussions (in both English and Spanish), its Summer programs, or its startup business courses. As the use of technology is rapidly increasing, the library keeps pace by offering digital resources to its tech-savvy patrons. The management and staff at the Northwest Regional Library take great pride in providing excellent customer service to its patrons. Gloria Moskovitz, a Library Aide, assists patrons with checking out and renewing books, and answering any questions they may have. This is one of the reasons why Leanna Aponte visits the library twice a week with her children. “The staff is pleased to give you options--every month, there are different activities”, she states. Leanna has only just started coming back to the library since elementary school. “I miss the joy of coming in and getting a new book, and want to get back to those roots so my children can experience what I did”.
What to Look Forward to at the Northwest Regional Library:
• June- Summer Programs- educational, fun, and a “cool” way to spend your Summer (events offered for all ages) • Tai Chi (to be announced)
Ongoing Programs at the Northwest Regional Library: • Computer Classes • English Café (learn English in a conversational setting) • Toddler Storytime • Homework Help
The Northwest Regional Library is a melting pot of people, ideas, events, and resources. It has become a second home to many people, who often use it as a retreat from their everyday lives. At the Northwest Regional Library, there really is “Something for everyone”. A trip to the Northwest Regional Library, or any library, is sure to please all ages. So come on in to the Northwest Regional Library…your adventure begins here!

Fill Your Tank with Premium… Foods! Here are some extra tips for better, healthier eating.
As I drive around town I see lots of beautiful cars. They pull into gas stations and fill up their tanks with the best fuel available. Makes sense, right? If you want a machine to run well, you give it the best fuel. However, many Americans do not seem to have the same philosophy when it comes another type of machine called “their body”. More and more we put stuff in our mouths knowing that it lacks good nutritional value. We seem to be ok with sodas, Twinkies and a bag of chips and wonder why it is that we feel sluggish and lack the energy necessary to complete the day. We are ok putting the best fuel possible in our vehicles and somehow fine filling up our body with cheap “junk”. March is National Nutrition Month and we know that with a few simple changes to our eating habits, we can reap big benefits that could have a positive impact on our weight, blood pressure, blood sugar and cholesterol readings. Everyone knows that fruits and veggies are good for you, it just takes extra work, effort and sometimes planning, in order to nourish the proper way. Before you begin any diet changes it is an excellent idea to do a detox or cleanse in order to prepare your body for better nutrition. Vitamin stores and Health-food

markets have many options for these programs. I am partial to a program that has been around for a long time. It is a 21 Day program which helps detox the liver and the kidneys. My wife and I try to do it once a year. It involves eating lots of fruits and veggies, drinking a few shakes, taking some capsules and cutting out some of the “good stuff”, (which we know isn’t so good for you). Whatever the plan, starting something soon is the most important part.
Add beans to salads, soups and stews. Top off pasta or pizza with cut up veggies. Add raisins, bananas, or berries to your cereal. Have a piece of fruit for dessert.
Lastly, Water, Water, Everywhere…. Drink at least eight 8-ounce glasses per day. Water helps in the digestive process, carries nutrients to all the body’s cells and helps the kidneys flush out toxins. HEALTH & WELLNESS Dr. Monique Bain
Athletes and Acupuncture Athletes and coaches are in an ongoing search for ways to improve performance and decrease recovery time in order to gain a competitive edge. Many pro athletes and professional sports teams are utilizing acupuncture as part of their wellness program, not only to have peak performances, but also to prevent injuries and treat existing injuries with faster recovery time. Factors that influence performance include cardiovascular fatigue, muscular fatigue, delayed onset muscle soreness, injuries and anxiety. Clinical evidence shows that Acupuncture successfully address the physical as well as the psychological factors that can prevent an athlete performing at his or her full potential. NFL quarterback Matt Hasselbeck, fullback Tony Richardson, linebackers James Farrior and James Harrison, defensive end Marcus Strout, hockey superstar Jaromi Jagr, Olympic high jumper Amy Acuff, cyclist Lance Armstrong are regularly using acupuncture as part of their training regimens. For those who have bodies suffering a lot of wear and tear due to sports or intense training regimens, acupuncture is highly effective, time tested treatment. Acupuncture resolves pain, accelerates healing, increases range of motion, decreases inflammation, swelling and bruising, relaxes muscles, relieves spasms, lowers the body pain response and improves circulation. It’s important to know that Acupuncture as well as cupping can be used in conjunction with physical therapy, chiropractic and massage.
WHY USE ACUPUNCTURE? Improves blood flow: when the needles activate points, they create an increase in nitric oxide which causes blood vessels to relax and widen, opening up arteries. The process allows more blood flow to the heart, improving cardiovascular health.
“
“I know of no single formula for success. But over the years I have observed that some attributes of leadership are universal and are often about finding ways of encouraging people to combine their efforts, their talents, their insights, their enthusiasm and their inspiration to work together.” -Queen Elizabeth II
“Perseverance is failing 19 times and succeeding the 20th.” -Julie Andrews
Prevents Injuries: promotes neurological and cardiovascular balance, supporting the body’s homeostasis, therefore preventing injuries. Should injury arise, treatments regulate nerve conduction and microcirculation in the area of inflammation, speeding up healing. Energy and Endurance enhancement: regulates the nervous system, helping improve energy and endurance and allowing for enhanced athletic performances. Muscle relaxation and rapid recovery: Blood flow is increased through the body, tight muscles relax and inflammation reduces, relieving fatigue, strain and soreness. Treatments between training sessions and after races, competitions or games minimizes muscle fatigue, promotes deeper more restful sleep allowing muscle tissue to rebuild and energy restored faster. Our youngest went off to college this year. She is doing great and so is the oldest, but my husband and I aren’t. At first I thought it was just my daughter’s absence in the home, but it is clearly more. My husband and I just don’t seem to have anything to talk about passed the bills, the kids or the pets. We both agree we still love each other, but it has become very awkward between us and I have begun to see that we are virtually living separate lives. I have been following your column for a long time and think maybe Marriage Counseling could help us. My husband has reluctantly agreed this makes sense; however, he comes from a very private, proud family and has admitted he is embarrassed and ashamed to actually go for therapy, saying he would be mortified if someone we know sees us. I am angry that his pride is more important to him than our marriage but I don’t want his pride to ruin our chances at happiness and I am beginning to resent him for it. My gut tells me that without help we either won’t live out the rest of our lives together or it will be so empty it just won’t matter, and I am beginning to feel very depressed. If you have any suggestions I would be most appreciative.

You may be surprised to know that there are many people in the community that feel the way your husband does and we thank you for the opportunity to address this issue. Although all licensed therapists are ethically bound to privacy and confidentiality, we at Family Therapy Associates take this a step further. Clients come to us when they are struggling, often in a crisis and feeling most vulnerable and we are keenly aware that therapy is not a “matter of fact” business. At Family Therapy Associates we have developed what we refer to as a Concierge Service Practice---“without a concierge fee” and we are committed to providing each and every individual, couple or family with our 10 Point Promise. 1. We are committed to treating every client like they are our only client.
2. We provide extraordinary attention to detail and concern for your particular sensitivities and situation. 3. We set up our appointments ourselves, eliminating the need to “tell your story or even divulge your name to a third party”. 4. We recognize that we are providing a service and our clients have busy lives outside of therapy. Our appointment schedules are designed to accommodate your busy life. 5. We purposely leave a scheduling gap between sessions and do not schedule our clients “back to back” which eliminates the risk of your running into someone you know. 6. In addition to the privacy that our gap scheduling offers, it also gives us the flexibility to spend a little extra time with you if necessary. 7. We also understand that issues come up between sessions and invite our clients to contact us if the unexpected happens or the need is critical. 8. We never rush our clients .Clients tell us they knew we were right for them from the first phone conversation because they felt at ease, listened to, and not rushed. 9. Our care is friendly, professional and nonjudgmental; we value you as a person and the importance of your problems. 10. Our clients matter to us. We truly get to know every person we work with. Many clients are amazed to find that when they reach out a year or two after therapy has ended, we still remember them, as well as their family and the challenges they dealt with. It sounds like you and your husband are experiencing a “bump in the road”, certainly not uncommon after 22 years of marriage and two grown children. Perhaps you can share this column with him; of course your identity is protected and your privacy respected. We strongly encourage you to seek counseling now, before the problems grow, and trust that when you visit our office, your privacy and the confidentiality of your visits are as important to us as they are to you.

LEGALLY SPEAKING BY ALAN J. REINDFELD, ESQ
The Main Terms of Estate Planning This month I am giving a simple overview of the documents and terms I use daily. •
•
Durable Power of Attorney – This is a document that allows someone to make financial and other decisions for you. As long as it is properly prepared, the document can be used for anything. For example, when a person gets older and they are not able to manage their affairs due to a number of reasons(i.e. old age, dementia, etc..), the durable power of attorney allows someone to manage their affairs. Healthcare Surrogate - This is a document that allows someone to make medical decisions for you in the event that you are incapable of managing your own medical affairs. This document also allows for your Healthcare Surrogate to talk to your doctors without any HIPAA violations occurring.
•
Last Will & Testament - This is a document that allows a person to state their wishes in the event of their death. This document will list who will be in charge of a person’s assets and who those assets should be distributed to.
•
Living Will - A Living Will is a written statement detailing a person’s desires regarding their end of life medical treatment. This document becomes extremely important in circumstances in which a person is no longer able to give their consent. This “Terry Schiavo” document is designed to make sure your family knows your wishes regarding end of life procedures.
•
Revocable Trust - This document, when all assets are properly titled, allows a person to avoid probate. This document works in cases of incapacity, like Donald Sterling
and the sale of the LA Clippers. You can choose who will be in charge, as well as how your beneficiaries are allowed to use anything left to them. •
Probate - Probate, the last term I usually use, is a court process that distributes a deceased person’s assets. If the deceased person leaves a will directing how his or her property should be distributed after death, the probate court must determine if it should be admitted to probate and given legal effect, choosing if it is valid or not. If a person dies intestate—without leaving a will - the court appoints a Personal Representative to distribute the deceased person’s property according to the laws of Florida.
The above basic terms, among others, are used by members of my firm as well as myself on a daily basis. I hope the above provided some clarification for all the readers out there. However, please note that these terms are sometimes used interchangeably by people and their legal significance can vary depending on the circumstances involved. Let the attorneys at the Law Offices of Reinfeld & Cabrera, P.A. help guide you through the estate planning process and answer any questions you may have.
The Law Office of Reinfeld & Cabrera, P.A. is conveniently located at 10235 W Sample Rd # 207, Coral Springs, FL. REAL ESTATE BY ANDI WITES
Get Your Home Ready To Sell!
T
his is a great time to sell. Inventory in many price ranges is low! Here are some things you can do to add value to your home without investing a ton of money.
Exterior - First impression is so important. You only GET ONE CHANCE TO MAKE A GOOD FIRST IMPRESSION. Touch up stucco bands, front doors and worn spots on the exterior. Hopefully, you saved some of your exterior paint. If the original is dried out, bring the can to the paint store to match a new gallon. Landscape – Pull out and trim those dead, straggly bushes. Your biggest bang for the buck is fresh mulch. If you have pebbles or rocks, fill in the bald spots! Driveway – If your driveway needs pressure cleaning, a coat of black top or sealing, do it. Kitchen – Depending on what you can afford, consider replacing very old appliances or countertops. The biggest facelift, for a small price tag, is new door handles or knobs. Maintenance – Fresh grout is the best investment for a home with tile floors. Clean it if that will do the trick, and if not, invest in painting or replacing. Reseal when done. Organize – You know it, and yes, it is so hard to do! GET RID OF STUFF! You may have wonderful pieces of bric-a-brac or chachkas, as some call them. But if the eyes have too much to fall on, prospects may miss seeing key architectural details and misjudge room sizes. Pack it up, put in your garage, give it away, donate it, or get a
small storage unit to remove excess furnishings from the house. LESS IS MORE! Staging tip – This one I heard today from Jill Gold at stylemyhome.com. Use mirrors! A prospective buyer may see themselves in the mirror and that helps them visualize themselves in the home! Agents like myself are very good at staging with what you already have in your home. Hiring a professional, especially for a vacant home, can make all the difference in the sale price and time on the market. Call me for recommendations and resources to assist you with these tasks! Ask my advice anytime on updates and improvements you are thinking about making to your home. The advice is free, as is a market analysis of your property value. EXPERIENCE AND MARKET SHARE COUNT! #1 MARKET SHARE FOR 2016 IN ZIP CODE 33071 – 40TH YEAR IN REAL ESTATE AND TOP 1% OF REALTORS NATIONWIDE FOR CWB.

LEGALLY SPEAKING
BY KEN CUTLER, ESQ. & ANDREW RADER, ESQ.
What happens if you leave the scene of an accident if someone is injured? In an earlier issue, we explained that under Florida law communications between police of ficers and par ties involved in motor vehicle accidents are privileged. In other words, statements made to the police cannot be used against you. This is called the Accident Repor t Privilege. Under Florida Statute 316.066(4), accident repor ts are not admissible as evidence in any trial, civil or criminal nor are any statements made by the par ticipants in the accident to the police of ficer investigating the accident. This subsection states: “Each accident repor t made by a person involved in an accident and any statement made by such person to a law enforcement of ficer for the purpose of completing an accident repor t required by this section shall be without prejudice to the individual so repor ting. No such repor t or statement shall be used as evidence in any trial, civil or criminal. The result of breath, urine, and blood tests administered as provided in §316.1932 or §316.1933 are not confidential and shall be admissible into evidence in accordance with the provisions of §316.1934.” Recently, a Florida appellate cour t opinion out of Miami considered this privilege in a situation where the driver fled the scene of an automobile crash in which someone was killed. The Cour t held “ that the accident privilege in section 316.066(4) does not confer any benefit or privilege on a person who abandons her duty to remain at the scene of any automobile accident which results in death, and who chooses instead to leave the scene of an accident, contrar y to section 316.027(1)(b) of the Florida Statutes (2013).” That statute states: The driver of a vehicle involved in a crash occurring on public or private proper ty which results in serious bodily injur y to a person shall immediately stop the vehicle at the scene of the crash, or as close thereto as possible, and shall remain at the scene of the crash until he or she has fulfilled the requirements of s. 316.062.” So, this law requires that a driver has a duty to give information and render aid after a crash. Bottom line: If you are involved in a crash resulting in someone being injured or killed, or resulting in damage to any vehicle or other proper ty, you must stay at the scene and give your name, address, and the vehicle registration. What’s more, you have an obligation to take reasonable steps to get an injured person at the scene the medical care he or she needs if it is apparent that medical care is necessar y or the person requests that you help medical care. If you don’t, the privilege that prevents your statements from being used against you may not apply. WILLIAMS V. STATE, No. 3D14 -2853 (Fla. Dist. Ct. App. Oct. 26, 2016). Remember you have rights that are spelled out under the law. If you are involved in a crash and want to know more about your rights please give us a call. All initial consultations are always free with no obligation. CUTLER R ADER, P.L. can be reached at (954) 913 - CASE (2273) or visit us at w w w.CutlerRader.com www.CityNewsMagaziNe.CoM

What Is Chiropractic About? Did you know that 80% of the population will experience low back pain at one time or another in their life? That means that you have a strong chance of experiencing pain sometime soon, or you may have pain now. Perhaps it is not low back pain that you are experiencing, rather, headaches, neck pain, fatigue, numbness or tingling. Maybe you have poor posture. Whatever the symptom(s), there are many factors that affect us. Such factors include the type of mattress that we sleep on, stress, sitting too much, the shoes that we wear, activities performed at home, work and play, or lack of exercise. These are just a few of the things that affect our spine and spinal health, and ultimately our overall health. Injuries sustained during physical activity, falls or automobile accidents are additional factors that affect our health. The human body is a complex and finely tuned machine. Bones, joints, muscles and nerves work together to produce motion. As such, it is important to maintain our health. Chiropractic is a natural health care which helps prevent illness. Many refer to Chiropractic as wellness care. Although medicine has a place in health care, there is often the need for a physical solution rather than a chemical/ pharmaceutical one. This is where Chiropractic can help! Chiropractic Physicians are trained in the spine and it’s inter-relationship with the nervous system and musculoskeletal system. Chiropractors go through four years of college studies, four years of Chiropractic college, National Boards and State Boards before being licensed to practice. 3 Ways Seniors Can Control Prescription Costs
Ramblewood Middle School Drama Troupe
For 55 million Americans enrolled in Medicare, the New Year means any new Medicare Advantage or prescription drug plans, or any changes to your existing plans, take effect. If you signed up for coverage, it’s important to understand how your prescription drug costs may be affected. Even if you did nothing to alter your coverage, some features of your plan may have changed for 2017. A survey by Walgreens shows that even though prescription drug costs are among the top concerns for Medicare beneficiaries, approximately one out of every five beneficiaries lacks a good understanding of their insurance plan. Roughly the same percentage falsely believes that all pharmacies charge the same copay and one-third of respondents didn’t know they can switch pharmacies at any time, including outside of the annual enrollment period. To make the most of your benefits and find potential cost savings for your prescription medications under your Part D coverage, here are three easy steps to get started: Use a less expensive brand or generic. The brand-name drug your doctor prescribed can do wonders for your symptoms but be worrisome for your budget. Many brand-name drugs have generic or other brand substitutes. First, make sure your doctor considers generic options. If those options aren’t available, there may be lower-cost brand-name drugs used to treat the same condition. Ask your pharmacist if you have that option then talk with your doctor to see if switching brands makes sense in your situation. Verify whether your plan has a preferred pharmacy network. Many prescription drug plans have a preferred pharmacy (preferred cost share) network where you can pay a lower out-of-pocket copay for the exact same drug. Walgreens is in the preferred pharmacy network for many of the largest Medicare sponsors and, effective January 2017, offers copays as low as $0 on generic medications for select plans. Filling a generic medication at a non-preferred pharmacy could cost you $3, $5 or even $10 for the same drug. Seek Medicare’s Extra Help program and other ways to save. Medicare offers an Extra Help program to help people with limited income and resources pay Medicare prescription drug program costs, like premiums, deductibles and coinsurance. Make sure you’re taking full advantage of your insurance coverage, which may cover non-prescription items, like vaccinations and certain over-the-counter medications. Medicare beneficiaries seeking help navigating prescription drug costs can find additional resources and a list of Medicare plan sponsors at walgreens.com/ medicare.

Fanny’s Journey to Marjory Stoneman Douglas High By Rachel Galvin On Feb. 17, the students at Marjory Stoneman Dougalas High School’s History of the Holocaust class had some special visitors. They thought director Lola Doillon, the creator of “Fanny’s Journey,” would be coming to see them. She had directed a film telling the story of a 13-year-old girl named Fanny who helped other Jewish children cross the border from their foster home in Italy into Switzerland during WWII. But she was unable to attend. However, Fanny, herself, came all the way from Israel to be a part of this special screening of the film, speaking to students in her native Hebrew through a translator, answering their questions about the war and her life. She also brought her daughter along. This visit was orchestrated through Marion Williams from the Broward County School Board’s Department of Diversity & Cultural Outreach, who contacted one of the class’s teacher’s Ivy Schamis about showing the film. This Menemsha Film was shown also in other movie theaters in Boca Raton, Tamarac, Delray Beach and Lake Worth, and 87-year-old Fanny was able to attend those screenings. Schamis, who teaches her class with colleague Donna Amelkin, says the class has been around for three years now and it is an academic elective attended mostly by seniors. “The students learn about events leading up to WWII, details of The Third Reich and The Holocaust. We have four classes this year. We attend community events related to the Holocaust and we bring in guest speakers when we can. We try to expose the students to every learning opportunity in our area as well as outside the community,” says Schamis. Regarding this special event, Schamis says, “The students adored Fanny. We viewed the film with her. It’s was a humbling experience for all of us at the high school. The students were in awe of Fanny’s experiences escaping the Nazis as a 13-year-old girl, with a small group of youth without adult supervision.” Fanny had been sent with her young sisters away from their home in France in 1943 to a foster home in Italy where she stayed with other Jewish children. Once the Nazis began to occupy her newfound country, the caretakers who had taken her and the others in help to arrange for them to move them across the Swiss border. But the caretakers end up departing on their

own, leaving the children to fend for themselves. Fanny and the children are able to escape to freedom, but Fanny’s parents were ultimately murdered in the concentration camps. It was a great honor for the students to learn about this brutal, but important-to-understand history firsthand from Fanny, in addition to seeing the film; but Fanny also received much in return from her visit. Schamis explains, “It was difficult for Fanny’s daughter to get her to leave as she was so happy, surrounded by the students chatting with her and giving her hugs. The students had a lot of questions for Fanny.” This visit was a great addition to the class’s curriculum. The students were already instructed about the

Holocaust and this time period so they were able to have a better understanding of the film and ask pertinent questions. By meeting Fanny, they were able to put a face to the history, and will be able to take the lessons they learned into their own life and future. Schamis explains, “The Holocaust class helped them to understand the situation surrounding the events that led up to a tragic time in history. Hate never wins and the students will take this message with them as they branch out to the many college campuses they will be occupying come fall. The students know it is their duty to stand up for what is right and try to prevent hate.” To find out more about Fanny’s Journey and other Menemsha Films, visit www.menemshafilms.com/ fannys-journey.

HEALTH & WELLNESS BY DR. SIMON WONG
Part Two
High Protein and Fiber Diet On Part 1 of this article, we have been discussing about weight/lifestyle management by having a low-carbs diet and coupling with high protein intake to prevent muscle loss and maintain a high fiber intake to provide satiety. Following are suggestions on the daily meals to achieve such a goal.
Breakfast Start your morning with a smoothie which can also be used as a healthy dessert. Simply toss ice with Greek yogurt or kefir, nuts and/or seeds such as almonds and/or ground flax seeds, dark leafy greens, then add some favor with bananas, melon or berries in season (frozen berries are acceptable substitutes) for a protein-packed fruity beverage. An even easier alternative is to make a bowl of cereal by adding fiber-rich cereal (buying from the bulk cereal section of health food stores such as Whole Food), add Greek yogurt, nuts, seeds for the needed protein, and top it off with few slices of banana and berries for favor. For those with bigger appetite, you can add a hardboiled egg or be fancy when you have the time, pairing an omelet with a side of cottage cheese and fresh fruit such as cantaloupe, mango, strawberries and blueberries.
Lunch Kick up the fiber content in your lunch by enjoying a cup of lentil soup; add protein-packed grains, cheese and tomatoes for a heartier flavor. Mix and match your grains, proteins and veggies every day to keep your taste buds excited and longing for more variety. Start with brown rice today and switch to buckwheat tomorrow, stewed tomatoes today and roasted asparagus tomorrow or turkey burgers today and smoked salmon tomorrow. A time saving alternative is to create a salad lunch box with fresh lettuce. The meats can be tuna (from can) or chopped chicken breast (boiled chicken breast prepared during the weekend stored at the freezer) or they can simply be left-over meats spicing up with cashews, pecans, dried cherries, fresh basil and a dollop of Greek yogurt in lieu of mayonnaise. For

the vegetarian, beans can be a viable meat alternative for the salad. Using last night leftover soup (intentionally to make extra for lunch) to be warmed up at noon would be also another economical viable option.
Snack Savor an afternoon snack of apples and nut butter with a sprinkle of ground flax seeds and dried cranberries for a unique treat that will keep your taste buds happy. Trail mix is an easy way to pair protein-rich pumpkin seeds with almonds, dried bananas and dates. I found the Kind nut bars sold at Walmart is a mighty convenient healthy ready snack to have in a pinch.
Dinner Whip up a stir-fry for dinner with sliced chicken breast, red and orange bell peppers, apples and snap peas. Vegetarian alternative can be a soy based product or gluten meat (if you have no gluten sensitivity, of course). Grill a hearty salmon and top with raspberry and balsamic demi-glaze or serve chicken, vegetable and fruit kabobs at your barbecue. As usual, consult and partner with your physician before you are on a quest for a healthy lifestyle; may that be starting a new exercise program or adopting a new diet in our case. Too much fiber may lead to gas, diarrhea, abdominal discomfort, constipation and bloating, also may lead to an inability to absorb certain nutrients. High protein diets may lead to a loss of calcium in bones, which in turn may cause osteoporosis. Consuming too much protein might put a strain on the kidneys, especially for those that have kidney disease.

Get Picky About Pet Food
BEST OF CORAL SPRINGS & PARKLAND 2015 BEST PET GROOMING
Good nutrition puts pets on track for better health (Family Features) When a beloved family pet experiences health problems, it can take a toll on the whole family. In some cases, it can take weeks or even months to identify the problem, and more importantly, where the solution lies. In some cases, the answer is as simple as changing what your pet eats. If you’ve always thought all pet foods were equal, think again. Veterinarian-developed formulas, such as those offered by Diamond CARE, are created for pets with unique dietary needs but also provide affordable complete nutrition, without sacrificing quality or taste, so you can feed your pets the special diet they need for as long as they need it. Learn more about these common ailments that may be corrected with a new highquality feeding regimen, and talk with your veterinarian about a treatment plan to get your pet back to better health.
Sensitive Skin While a rash or other skin irritation can be an obvious sign that your pet has sensitive skin, other behaviors such as excessive scratching, biting and licking can also signal a problem. Identifying the cause is essential to bringing your pet comfort. Skin irritation among pets is generally caused by something in their environment, such as an allergy, a parasitic infection or in more extreme cases, a neurogenic or infectious condition. Skin problems can also arise from poor nutrition. If your dog has skin sensitivities that might be related to diet or allergic skin disease, try a diet with hydrolyzed salmon as the single animal protein source. Ingredients such as omega-6 and omega-3 fatty acids have also been shown to be beneficial to skin and coat health. Some sensitive skin formulas not only contain hydrolyzed salmon but are grain-free and made with peas to enhance the flavor and provide high-quality carbohydrates.
Weight Management A few extra pounds on your dog or cat may not seem like a cause for concern, but too much weight can cause a long list of health problems. Just like humans, one of the best ways to counter a weight problem in pets is to adjust what they’re eating. An option such as Diamond CARE Weight Management Formula for Adult Dogs or Adult Cats can help address your pet’s weight issue without leaving it feeling hungry. Powdered cellulose, a source of insoluble fiber, helps your pet feel full, while L-Carnitine aids the body in metabolizing fat. To make sure your pet gets all the nutrients needed, this formula is rounded out with omega fatty acids, guaranteed antioxidants and probiotics developed specially for canine and feline digestive health. Talking with your veterinarian can help identify other ways to help your pet lose weight and also help you rule out any underlying medical concerns that may be causing weight gain or preventing your pet from being as active as it should be.

Though it may seem like it at times, not all dogs have cast-iron stomachs. A limitedingredient formula that combines potatoes and egg protein is a good, easy-to-digest option for sensitive dogs. Other beneficial ingredients may include psyllium seed husk, a source of beneficial fiber, which helps support proper digestion, and probiotic strains that are native to the canine gastrointestinal tract.

ven as 2017 begins, Rosemary Krieger of boca Raton is still in shock, she admits, from an event that took place in late 2016.
From left, Sarah Doyle, Woman Volunteer of the Year Luncheon chair; Kirstin Stanley, Junior League of Boca Raton president; Lifetime Achievement Award winner Rosemary Krieger; Mindy Shikiar, vice president of Oncology and Ambulatory Services and Business Development at Boca Raton Regional Hospital and Dr. Kathy Schilling, medical director at the Christine E. Lynn Women’s Health & Wellness Institute. (Photo by Dale King)
when a shaky, stunned and teary-eyed Rosemary reached the podium, she thanked the nearly 1,000 people in the audience at the 29thAnnual woman Volunteer of the Year Luncheon & Fashion show at the boca Raton Resort & club. she had particularly kind words for her husband, ben, longtime partner in giving, and her three children who flew in from around the country: sons Kenneth, from New York and gregory, from Delaware, and daughter, catherine Krieger-Nelson, from Dallas. “I’ve gotten flowers, emails and calls,” said Rosemary in a recent interview, her smiling face still beaming with excitement. “i didn’t expect to get the award. i am still in shock.” many in the audience were themselves in tears as they stood and applauded Rosemary, whose beneficence has helped dozens of nonprofits, from AVDA (Aid to Victims of Domestic Abuse), the YmcA, march of Dimes, george snow scholarship Fund, wayne barton center, st. Jude church, boca Helping Hands and Florence Fuller child Development center, to name a few. Education and Arts Leadership
Among those at her table was AVDA executive Director Pam o’brien, who nominated Rosemary for the award. “she is a true giver who thinks of others before herself,” said O’Brien. “She wants to make sure that women and children in need have a safe place to go.”

the generous lady from boca has a simple philosophy about giving. “You don’t think about it, you just do it. I has to come from the heart.” coincidentally, barely a month after receiving the honor, Rosemary has jumped back into an AVDA cause. she is on the committee planning the Feb. 21 “Heart of a Woman” luncheon fundraiser at the Boca Resort. The speaker will be Michelle Knight, one of the three women abducted, imprisoned and repeatedly raped by Ariel castro at his home in cleveland. Nabbed by the suspect between 2002 and 2004 were Knight (who has changed her name legally to Lilly Rose Lee), Georgina DeJesus and Amanda Berry. They finally escaped in 2013 when Castro was captured, tried and sentenced to life plus 1,000 years in prison. He committed suicide behind bars.

FRIENDS OF MUSIC, INC. PROUDLY PRESENTS “ROLL OVER, BEETHOVEN” to be performed by famed Steinway Artist JULIAN GARGIULO
Hard to believe March is already upon us! This month, we have lots of events planned and I’d love for you to join us. Our last Slice of the Springs neighborhood meeting of the season will be Thursday, March 2 at 7 p.m. Residents from the Northside and Northeast areas are invited to come to Country Hills Elementary and meet City staff. We are also excited to offer residents an opportunity to discuss any neighborhood concerns at a Virtual Slice meeting on April 20 at 7 p.m. You can find more details online at CoralSprings.org/slice. Also this month, we’re happy to welcome back Our Town America. The festival will run Friday, March 10 through Sunday, March 12 at the Sportsplex. This year’s event will feature family fun and include live entertainment, food court, amusements, arts and crafts, merchant booths, classic car show, games, and the traditional Miss Our Town America Beauty Pageant. As always, festival admission is free, but there is a $5 parking fee per car. For more information, visit www.ourtownamerica.org.
Julian Gargiulo is a renowned classical pianist and composer who performs all over the world in prestigious venues such as New York’s Carnegie Hall, Singapore’s Symphony Stage and Sydney’s Esplanade. Friends of Music, Inc is thrilled to host Mr Gargiulo performing “Roll Over, Beethoven” on Saturday, April 1st at 7:30 P.M. at St Mary Magdalene Episcopal Church, 1400 Riverside Drive, Coral Springs, FL 33071.
If you are a fan of the arts, come and enjoy this fantastic weekend of art, culture and entertainment! The 13th Annual Festival of the Arts is once again coming to The Walk on March 18 and 19. There will also be exciting performing arts events including fine dance, theatrical, and literary presentations. For more information, visit www.csfoa.org.
Mr Gargiulo is charming, fun and talented, and touring here from his home in Paris, France. There’s music for everyone - a little jazz, a little tango, some classics and his own compositions. Mr Gargiulo is a classically trained pianist who captivates his audience not only with his technical precision, but with his Woody Allen-ish wit as well. He invites his audience to abandon all preconceived notions about classical concerts. Huffington Post said he is “Saturday Night Live meets Carnegie Hall”. Not part of the concert, but invaluable to our community, is the Master Class that Mr Gargiulo will conduct for local student musicians. This class, held earlier in the day, will provide the students with the opportunity to learn from a professional and encourage them to pursue musical careers. A complimentary reception of desserts and non - alcoholic beverages will follow the concert. Friends of Music, Inc. (FOM), a 501(c)(3) organization, was created in 2003 by a dedicated group of music lovers who volunteer their time and talents to present a small concert series and to support local public Middle and High School music programs. To date, FOM has presented nearly 50 concerts. More than 1000 students have had the opportunity to learn and play alongside the “pros”, and over $170,000 has been donated to these school music programs. Ticket costs for each concert including reception - Adults $25 and Students $5. Teachers and parents accompanied by students are $15. For tickets and additional information, please call 954-752-5620. Tickets will also be sold at the door.

LEGALLY SPEAKING IGnItE Your PowEr BYLINE HERE BY TRacY, LIfE & LEadERsHIp coacH
It’s NOT Just The Way You Are…
H
ow many times have you said something about yourself, followed up by “that’s just the way I am?” Or heard someone around you talk about themselves and follow it up with “that’s just the way I am?”
“I take things personally, that’s just the way I am.” “I always run late, that’s just the way I am.” “I’m a total neat freak, it’s just the way I am.” “I don’t have a creative bone in my body, it’s just the way I am.”
Take a moment and think about yourself, your ways of being…where is it getting in your way? How would it feel to not take things personally? What is running late all the time costing you? What would it feel like to let go and be a little bit less of a neat freak? You have the ability to create the vision of who you are and be that. You have all of the power. All it takes to start is a new decision…
Here’s the thing…it’s not just the way you are. It is how you think you are, a decision you made about yourself or what you have tolerated for yourself. As humans we are not fixed creatures, we have the ability and capacity to grow, expand and change whenever we are ready to. The reason we follow up with the “it’s just the way I am statement” is because somewhere deep down you are making a justification, reason or excuse for yourself. The convenience of this keeps you from having to take full personal responsibility for the behavior and alleviates you from having to take any action to change it. In addition, continuously using this type of language sets self-inflicted limitations and labels. If you say, “I don’t have a creative bone in my body,” how likely are you to ever try to access your creativity? If you say, I’m horrible with money, how likely will you be to create financial freedom? Our thoughts become things. Where are focus goes, our energy flows.

Better Bus Safety
FOOT AND ANKLE ASSOCIATES OF SOUTH FLORIDA, LLC
(Family Features) For millions of school-age children, each day begins and ends with a bus ride. While parents entrust their children’s safety to the capable hands of bus drivers, these tips from the National Association for Pupil Transportation provide some measures parents can take and lessons they can teach to increase safety going to and from the bus, and even during the ride.
We Treat Infants, Toddlers, Teenagers and Adults
• Create a morning routine that puts kids at the bus stop five minutes before the scheduled pickup time. This helps avoid a last-minute rush, when safety lessons are easily forgotten, and ensures kids are safely in place for boarding.
• Teach safe riding habits: stay seated with head, hands and feet inside at all times; use a seatbelt (if available); keep bags and books out of the aisle and remain seated until the bus stops moving.
• Encourage children to wear bright, contrasting colors so they can be seen easier by drivers.
• Remind kids that just like when riding in your car, loud noises are off limits so they don’t distract the driver.
• Instruct children to walk on the sidewalk. If there is no sidewalk, advise them to stay out of the street, walk single-file, face traffic and stay as close to the edge of the road as possible.
Leaving the Bus
• If kids must cross a street, driveway or alley, remind them to stop and look both ways before crossing. • Verify that the bus stop location offers good visibility for the bus driver; if changes are needed, talk with nearby homeowners or school district officials to implement changes. Never let kids wait in a house or car, where the driver may miss seeing them approach the bus. • Remind children that the bus stop is not a playground. Balls or other toys could roll into the street and horseplay can result in someone falling into the path of oncoming traffic.
On the Bus Ride • Instruct children to allow the bus to come to a complete stop before approaching it. • When boarding the bus, items can www.CityNewsMagaziNe.CoM
• Remind children to look before stepping off the bus. If they must cross the street, teach them to do so in front of the bus by taking five big steps away from the front of the bus, looking up and waiting for the driver to signal that it is safe to start into the street. • For parents who meet their kids at the bus, remember that in their excitement kids may dart across the street. Eliminate the risk by waiting on the side of the street where kids exit the bus. • Make the bus ride part of your daily “how was school?” discussion. Encourage kids to talk about the things they see and hear on the bus, so you can discuss appropriate behaviors and, if necessary, report any concerns to school administrators. • Bullying is more prevalent than ever and buses are no exception. Ask your child to tell you about any bullying they observe, whether against another child or themselves, and talk about how to shut down bully behavior.

Healthy Eatings
Warm Up to Veggie-Packed Soup (Family Features) When the weather outside is frightful, we could all use a cozy soup for supper. A steaming bowl of Rustic Vegetable-Beet Soup provides instant comfort. The ease and convenience of Aunt Nellie’s pickled beets can’t be “beet”– no need to spend time peeling or pickling. This colorful mix of antioxidant-rich beets, sweet potato and carrots joins tender zucchini to create a soup that tastes like it simmered all afternoon; but in fact, comes together in under an hour. The sweet-tangy beets add an unexpected but welcome layer of flavor to this hearty soup. For the finishing touch, a garnish of vibrant green, lemony gremolata brightens the soup’s flavor. Garlic, lemon and parsley may seem ordinary, but they come alive when combined. Crisp flatbread makes a perfect accompaniment to this meal-in-a-bowl. For more recipes, or to learn more about Aunt Nellie’s beets and other products, visit www.AuntNellies.com.

Ramp Up Breakfast with Morning Protein
Add milk for simple, high-quality protein to help start your day right (Family Features) Families across America want to make sure that they’re starting the day strong, and getting enough high-quality protein in the morning is a simple way to do so. A breakfast with protein is a great way to energize the morning, and adding it to your family’s routine doesn’t have to be complicated.
Bring a smile to your child’s face with this charming twist on a breakfast standard. Simply make instant oats with familiar flavors – cinnamon, vanilla and brown sugar – and top the bowl with a friendly bunny face. For more recipes and ideas, visit MilkLife.com.
Simply add an 8-ounce glass of milk with 8 grams of natural protein plus other essential nutrients to your favorite breakfast foods for an easy, delicious way to help meet your morning protein goals. Kids already love milk and it’s a naturally nutrientrich, wholesome food that moms can feel good about pairing with breakfast. Plus, experts recommend 25-30 grams of protein for adults at every meal – so getting a high-protein breakfast, including milk, gives moms the energy they need to cross everything off their to-do lists. Parenting expert, pediatrician and mom of three, Dr. Tanya Altmann, recommends serving milk at breakfast for a source of high-quality protein in the morning. “The morning is a great time to bring the family together and start the day off with a tasty breakfast. As a mom of three, I need breakfast options that are quick and

easy but also nutritious,” Dr. Altmann said. “Serving my children whole-grain cereal and milk, healthy oatmeal with fruit or a smoothie made with milk guarantees that my family will get high-quality protein and other essential nutrients to start their day off strong.”

In microwave-safe bowl, stir together oats, milk, cinnamon, vanilla and brown sugar. Microwave on high 30 seconds-1 minute and stir. Cut banana in half crosswise. Cut 1 1/8-inch thick coin slices from flat end of each banana half. Place slices in upper-third of oatmeal bowl, side-by-side, to make eyes. Top with 1 blueberry on each banana slice. Place remaining banana halves at the top of the bowl, hanging off edge, to create ears. Place strawberry in the middle of the bowl to make the nose then drizzle chocolate, if desired, to make mouth and whiskers. Serve with 8-ounce glass of milk. Old-Fashioned Caramel Cinnamon Rolls
Servings: 9 Rolls: 1 cup Premier Protein Caramel Shake 2 1/4 teaspoons (1 packet) yeast 4 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted and divided, plus additional for greasing bowl and pan 1/4 cup sugar, plus 3 tablespoons, divided 1/2 teaspoon salt 1 egg 1 1/4 cups all-purpose flour, plus additional for kneading and rolling 1 1/4 cups whole-wheat flour 1 1/2 teaspoons cinnamon Glaze: 1/2 cup confectioners’ sugar 1 tablespoon Premier Protein Caramel Shake Heat protein shake in microwave or on stove to about 110 F, or warm to touch but not boiling. In medium bowl, sprinkle yeast over warm protein shake and stir to combine. Let sit 3 minutes. Add 2 tablespoons melted butter, 1/4 cup sugar, salt and egg, and mix until well combined. Gradually add flour, stirring after each addition. Once dough is no longer too sticky to handle, turn dough out onto lightly floured surface. Knead 3-5 minutes to make moderately soft dough. Shape dough into ball. Place dough in lightly greased bowl; turn once. Cover and let rise in warm place until size has doubled (about 1 hour). Punch dough down, cover and let rise 1 additional hour. Punch dough down. Grease 8-by-8-inch glass or metal baking dish and set aside. In separate bowl, combine remaining sugar and cinnamon. On lightly floured surface, roll dough into 12-by-8-inch rectangle. Using pastry brush, brush about 1 1/2 tablespoons of remaining butter evenly over dough. Sprinkle 2/3 of cinnamon sugar mixture over dough. Using pizza cutter or knife, cut dough into nine even 12-inch strips. Roll each strip tightly, sealing ends by pressing into dough. Arrange rolls in prepared pan. Pour remaining butter over buns then sprinkle remaining cinnamon and sugar on top. Let rise uncovered 30 minutes. Heat oven to 350 F. Bake rolls 25-30 minutes, or until lightly browned. While rolls cool slightly, prepare glaze. In small bowl, whisk together confectioners’ sugar and protein shake until smooth. Drizzle rolls with glaze. Serve warm.

5 Tips for Managing Diabetes
Come Join US
(Family Features) Living with diabetes is no laughing matter, but as many would say, laughter is often the best medicine. This is cer tainly true for comedic actress Yvette Nicole Brown, who was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes in 2013. In par tnership with the American Diabetes Association and Colgate Total through the “Laugh Out Loud” campaign, Brown of fers the following tips for a healthy smile and managing diabetes with a touch of humor.
Get Moving When it comes to diabetes, small lifestyle changes can make a big dif ference. Taking the first step toward exercising can be dif ficult for many, but a little bit goes a long way. Tr y parking fur ther away from the door, taking the stairs instead of the elevator or taking the longer route when you walk the dog. Whatever it may be, choose an activity that you enjoy doing and keep it consistent.
Give Your Smile Some Extra TLC You’re twice as likely to develop gum disease if you have diabetes. When Brown learned that, she immediately star ted taking better care of her teeth. She recommends brushing morning and night with a specially formulated toothpaste like Colgate Total, which reduces 83 percent more germs that cause gingivitis, the most common form of gum disease, as compared to an ordinar y non-antibacterial toothpaste.
Befriend Your Dentist Don’t be afraid to become friends with your dentist. Brown has her dentist on speed- dial, even calling or texting him in the middle of the night sometimes. You don’t have to be best friends with your dentist, but it’s crucial to establish a good relationship. They’re the exper t who you can turn to for all your oral health care needs, and oral health care is impor tant for those living with diabetes.
Find Your Tribe When you’re living with diabetes, you need a strong suppor t system. Be it friends, family or an online community, things are easier when you’ve got your tribe. A good place to get your questions answered and find people who are going through the same journey as you is OralHealthandDiabetes.com.
Live Confidently “Ever y time I think about my type 2 diabetes, I say to myself ‘So what? You are a strong, confident woman. Don’t let your diabetes run your life,’” Brown said. Diabetes isn’t a hindrance, it’s just a slight hiccup in life that you learn to live with. Get your mindset right, don’t let it dictate what you can or cannot do. When Brown was a kid her mom would say, “Sometimes you have to laugh to keep from cr ying.” That’s sometimes what people do when they get any kind of health diagnosis. The first response is, “Oh no,” and then you find a way around it. For more information about the connection between oral health and diabetes, visit OralHealthandDiabetes.com or search #OralHealthDiabetes on social media.

R
esidents can now assist the Coral Springs Police Department investigate crimes in your community. The Criminal Investigations Unit is requesting residents who utilize exterior surveillance systems to add their information to the newly created Video Surveillance Database. In the event a crime takes place in your neighborhood, a detective or officer may contact registered home surveillance system owners to obtain video, which may provide leads to an investigation. If you are interested in participating, please contact Sgt. Edmond DeRosa via e-mail at EDerosa@coralsprings.org with the following information:
• First and Last Name • Home Address • Email Address/Phone Number • Location of camera views (street view, driveway, etc.) • Amount of time your DVR or recording system retains data
special needs Registry
I
n an effort to better serve our residents who have developmental or cognitive delays, the Coral Springs Police Department initiated a Special Needs Database. This initiative provides officers and first responders with pertinent information regarding a person with special needs. Information requested includes: recent photo, home address, school (if applicable), special needs diagnosis, caregiver contact and other information that would allow us to better understand the registered person’s special needs. Registration for the database is for residents of Coral Springs and children who attend school in the city only. For more information or to register, contact Monica Vargas at (954) 346-1311.
educated Residents are safer Residents
I
n addition to utilizing social media to communicate with residents and business owners, the Coral Springs Police Department is now using NextDoor.com to provide information about crime trends, upcoming events and safety alerts. Additionally, users may opt to receive updates from neighbors and business providers in your community. To sign up, you must provide a valid e-mail address and your home address. For more information on the use of NextDoor.com by the Coral Springs Police Department, contact Lynne Martzall at (954) 344-1833.

FAMILY FEATURES
A Total Body Approach to a New You Do more in the New Year (Family Features) New Year’s resolutions typically focus on reactive goals like losing weight or getting back into that workout routine. However, thinking about resolutions in a more proactive, long-term way can give you more motivation and the willpower to stick with it. A commitment to proactive total body care, including these tips from Massage Envy, can keep your body and mind tuned up, allowing you to do more of what you love in 2017 and beyond.
Feel confident by upping your skincare Skin is an organ – the body’s largest organ, in fact. That’s why it’s so important to pay attention to it. Regular skincare can help you feel good on the outside by reversing signs of aging, improving skin tone and texture, moisturizing skin and reducing blemishes and breakouts, and better on the inside, as feeling good about how your skin looks can boost your confidence. A daily hydrating moisturizer with SPF does double duty to protect and hydrate. Regular facials that cater to your skin’s unique needs can also help minimize wrinkles,
cleanse pores, encourage skin cell renewal and improve overall tone and texture.
Live happier and stress free The Statistic Brain Research Institute reports that 77 percent of people regularly experience physical symptoms caused by stress. Spending time with friends, meditating and practicing mindfulness can help, but there are also physical ways to soothe stress. A quick walk can do wonders for clearing your head, and a single massage session can lower your heart rate and blood pressure, relax your muscles and increase the production of endorphins, your body’s natural “feel good” chemical. Stress relief is one of the benefits of regular massage therapy, and a key component for anyone trying to achieve a lifestyle that gives them the freedom to do more of what they love.
Veg out on the good stuff A healthy diet can help you maintain a healthy weight, feel good and boost your body’s immunity so you can stay well. Occasionally, indulging your sweet tooth or
salty cravings is OK, but to really take care of your body, leading health-focused agencies recommend piling your plate high with colorful fruits and veggies, lean meats like chicken and fish, and whole grains. If you started off with a commitment to eating better in the New Year, push hard to stick to it. Before long, you’ll find yourself automatically making smarter choices when it comes to mealtime, and when you put good fuel in your body, you get better results. Including total body care in your resolutions this year and beyond can create positive changes that last a lifetime. Visit MassageEnvy.com to learn more about steps you can take to boost your overall well-being.
