LETTER FROM THE EDITOR MOMS LIVES MATTER! Welcome to May. While April showers (which did start with a bang in late April) is said to bring May flowers, here in SoF-L-A it signals coming humidity, more mosquitoes than we almost can bear and grass that now has to be cut more often; but May also brings Mother’s Day. A day so meaningful, few among us don’t take notice. In this our 2nd May issue as new owners/publishers of this community publication, we honor the moms in our lives; past or present. If you are one of the lucky ones to still have a mom –think what life would be like without her in it. And then do something—ANYTHING—to make her feel special, wanted and needed, still.
If you’re lucky enough to BE someone’s mom, take just a moment to relish in your accomplishments. (And schedule the day “off” to enjoy those around you—family and friends to whom life without YOU would never be the same). You deserve it for right on the heels of “YOUR” day, local schools are finishing up and the summer “hubbub” begins: graduations, summer vacations++. Being publishers of 3 local magazines mailed monthly into over 65,000 homes and businesses, we enjoy a rare and somewhat intimate vantage point on “local” life. Our community is special and Lucy and I have made a deep commitment to do our part to keep it that way. To help local charities and civic groups, to highlight the good we see being accomplished here EVERY day and to help the local businesses start to thrive and grow once again.
interactive website --viewed by more than 300,000 people every month, we’ve taken a giant step to be more than just your community publication, but your community advocate as well. While we know we can’t be all things to all people, we are sincerely trying to bring you a concerned, family-friendly and informative magazine that leads with compassion and caring first. We want to welcome the residents of Pompano Beach who we now reach due to the merger between the Margate and Pompano Chamber s of Commerce and we look forward to not just a great summer, but a hopeful nod to our collective future. Please patronize our advertisers, and go HUG (or thank) a mom today.
We revamped our already significant social media platforms, especially FACEBOOK to bring more attention to everything meaningful in our community. We’ve exploded our new

FINANCIAL / TAX ADVICE RobeRt Spielman, Cpa, JD
Estimated Tax Payments And The Underpayment Penalty Now that this year ’s tax f iling deadline has passed, and you have either f iled your return, or are on ex tension, you may have some questions about the requirement to pay estimated taxes. Your star ting point for estimated taxes for the 2017 tax year, is your 2016 return or your estimated numbers if you have f iled an ex tension. One of the most impor tant jobs of your tax professional is to make cer tain you are not subject to estimated tax penalties, while simultaneously c onser ving your c ash for as long as possible. This means estimated tax planning is an essential par t of our role as tax advisor. We do understand your inc ome may not be earned evenly throughout the year, so of tentimes we need to project your tax liabilit y on a quar terly basis. But it is your tax information and projection of gains and losses, which ultimately determines how much, and when, you must pay estimated taxes. The more c omplex your personal tax situation, the more c omplex estimated tax planning bec omes. Ultimately, working together with your tax advisor, you should be able to meet your estimated tax payment responsibilities, so as to avoid the imposition of penalties that might other wise apply.

Individual taxpayers are required to pay their Federal and State inc ome taxes on a “pay as you go” basis. This means that throughout the year, taxpayers are generally required to have inc ome tax withheld from their wages, as well as pay estimated tax payments on a quar terly basis on income other wise not subject to withholding. There are several methods of determining the minimum amount of estimated taxes and withholding that must be taken out of a taxpayer ’s earnings or wages in order to avoid the imposition of non - deductible penalties. In general, withholdings from wages are required on a pro - rata basis for the amount earned. For these purposes, the taxpayer is required to advise their employer of how many withholding exemptions they wish in order to determine how much tax is withheld from their c ompensation. For non -wage income, a quar terly estimate system is in place. Under this system taxpayers are required to make quar terly estimated tax payments, generally in April, June, September and December or Januar y, in specif ied amounts to meet their minimum estimated tax payment threshold. Failure to meet the minimum tax payment requirements may result in penalties, generally calculated in a manner similar to interest. Penalties are non deductible additions to tax. The general rules with respect to estimated taxes are as follows: 1.If the tax af ter a reduction for inc ome taxes withheld is less than $1,0 0 0 no penalt y is applied for failure to pay estimates. 2.If the taxpayer had no tax liabilit y for the prior year, was a U.S. Citizen or a resident for the entire year, and the year was a full t welve months, there is no requirement for making estimated tax payments for the current year.
We Accept Medicare & Medicaid, Blue Cross Blue Shield, United Healthcare, Best Choice/Broward Health, and most insurance accepted. *Any massage therapy or other treatment must be medically necessary.

Coral Springs: From the Olden Days to the Golden Days By Brooke Bitton
F
or those of you who live in Coral Springs…it may come to you as a surprise that we have a history museum right in our own backyard. Yes, even at the young age of 53 (54 on July 3rd ), Coral Springs is already making its mark in history as a “premier community in which to live, work, and raise a family”, and has “everything under the sun”. Dedicated to the City of Coral Springs in 2004, The Museum of Coral Springs History serves to catalog and preserve Coral Springs’ history (an endeavor that was once run by city employees, Gina Orlando, Wendy Wangberg, and the Historical Advisory Committee). The Museum of Coral Springs History is open by appointment; it is also very popular with students and community groups. The Museum of Coral Springs History also invites patrons to be a part of this historyin-the-making. According to Christine ParkinsonJahrsdoerfer, the Coral Springs Communications Coordinator, “The Museum building is a piece of history…but it is the people who are taking the time to keep items of value, and ensure they are preserved for the future”. During the City of Coral Springs’ 40th Anniversary (in 2003), The Museum of Coral Springs History was renovated; but, even with such changes, the Museum still continues to house some of the city’s most treasured artifacts---models of the Covered Bridge and City Hall, and displays of Coral Springs neighborhoods, which provides residents with the opportunity to find the lot where they live. Archives, which are located off of the Museum’s premises, consist of old newspapers, police log books, political campaign relics, and pieces that belonged to previous mayors. Other items, such as old realtor signs, and buttons promoting one of the city’s gemstone restaurants, Runyon’s, are also in the mix. The oldest items in the archives include 20,000 plus slides and photos by Coral Ridge Properties, which originally inspired the idea of establishing a “City in the Country”. To us, Coral Springs is a young city; however, if you saw Coral Springs in the 1960’s, you would think that dinosaurs still roamed the Earth. If you can believe it, there were no malls, and very little civilization (per the U.S. Decennial Census, in 1970, there were only 1,489 residents!). Additionally, farms and cattle ranches made up a bulk of the city.

have any, give the city a call at (954) 344-1197…and be a part of Coral Springs history! Lately, the Historical Advisory Committee has spent a lot of time organizing photographs and identifying people and groups seen in them. On occasion, the Museum does work with volunteers, who are able to scan photographs. Members of the Historical Advisory Committee meet once a month. Guests are always welcome at meetings, which are held on the second Wednesday of each month at 6:30 p.m., either at The Museum of Coral Springs History, or at City Hall.
Today, Coral Springs is a metropolis. It continues to grow to accommodate people of all ages and walks of life; but it is important to remember the city’s history, and how it is still consistently shaping Coral Springs’ present, and its future. The Museum of Coral Springs History allows us to look back at the good ole’ days-when cattle wandered the land that we now inhabit, and the green bean crop was the least of anyone’s worries. The next time you want to take a trip down memory lane, head to The Museum of Coral Springs History (located at 10000 NW 29th St). The Museum is always looking for Coral Springs mementos. If you

Coral Springs may be young now; but it still has an abundance of history. With the help of The Museum of Coral Springs History, it will continue to preserve the artifacts and archives that have made it what it is today--- a “premier community to live, work, and raise a family”. So, “Kudos” to Coral Springs---see you on your 100th birthday! ***If you are a big history buff like me, or you just love trivia, visit this website: http://www.coralsprings.org/ living/history/coral-springs-trivia. “Varicose Veins are more than skin deep”
By Rachel Galvin

ur body does so much day in and day out, and most of that work goes unseen. Our veins have an important job, carrying our blood back and forth to our heart only to be pumped out again. As we age, this daily toil can become more apparent as veins reveal themselves like road maps, especially on our legs. When they become deeper and wider, such as the case of varicose veins, that is when it can be cause for concern. Not only can varicose veins be unsightly, but they also can be a signal that something else is happening within the body to cause them. Each vein has a tiny valve that helps it do its job, but there can be leaks and the valve can malfunction causing the blood to back up and the vein to bulge. Sometimes, having varicose veins can mean the person with them has cardiovascular problems. Many people will seek out a doctor to get rid of the unsightly veins, but sometimes the doctor they consult with is more of a plastic surgeon or dermatologist and does not probe deeper to understand the root cause of the issue. But Dr. Ariel Soffer, M.D., FACC, knows “varicose veins are more than skin deep.” He is board certified in cardiovascular disease and, for over 20 years, he has focused his practice on aspects of the cardiovascular system, especially varicose veins. According to company spokesperson Adam Kustin, people who have issues with their veins often complain of achy legs or numbness, among other symptoms. In order to ascertain the underlying problem, patients who come into our office undergo an ultrasound. “You and I can walk in and both have the same degree of problems with our veins] and there is no way to tell [the underlying issue] based on the surface,” says Kustin. “It is important to see a doctor.”

sclerotherapy, we inject a saline solution and the blood is magically redirected. It depends on the severity,” he says. “The laser is super accurate and highly effective. It is a low risk procedure.” Compression socks might be used in recovery as well, Kustin adds.
He said that one of the big culprits is inactivity. “When you are on your feet eight to 12 hours a day, not moving ... inactivity is the biggest culprit, or sitting with legs crossed...It also can be genetic,” he says. Mr. Kustin explained that exercising and elevating your legs periodically will help with blood flow. He also recommended compression socks, which he said act like a reverse funnel redirecting blood to the heart. Also weight management is important. The procedure to fix varicose veins can be relatively simple. Most procedures involve closing the vein, sometimes repairing it. “If it is a secondary or tertiary vein, we can close it up; a laser heats it and clamps it shut. If we do
Besides working with veins, The Soffer Health Institute also handle other cardiovascular issues, including primary care, everything from allergies to working with weight management. They work with senior care and also have a concierge service, which allows patients basically to “pay for play,” getting special services like having no wait time, obtaining greater access to the doctor, getting an annual physical and more. Dr. Soffer also keeps his staff up-to-date with the latest medical developments and shares his knowledge on an ABC News Health segment called “Dr. Soffer’s Second Opinion,” and elsewhere. Soffer Health Institute began in Aventura and now there are several locations, including one in Deerfield Beach at 1877 W. Hillsboro Blvd. They plan to open a Weston location next. Members of the staff speaks Spanish, Russian, Hebrew, Creole and Portuguese. For more information, call 305-792-0555 or visit www.sofferhealth.com.

LEGALLY SPEAKING
BY KEN CUTLER, ESQ. & ANDREW RADER, ESQ.
If I Fall Do I Have A Case? One of the most common types of cases we handle involves a fall from a slip or trip. Falls are the number two leading cause of injuries in the United States. Every 35 minutes a senior adult dies as a result of a fall, and every day 25,000 people visit hospitals as a result of falls. Under Florida law, a business is held liable when a walkway is unreasonably dangerous, such as broken, unreasonably slippery or otherwise dangerous. However, they are not responsible when the floor is slippery because of a “transitory foreign substance,” such as a recently spilled soda. In order for the business to be held liable in those circumstances, the victim must show that the substance was on the floor for a long enough time that the store staff knew or should have known about it and cleaned it up: 768.0755 Premises liability for transitory foreign substances in a business establishment.— (1) If a person slips and falls on a transitory foreign substance in a business establishment, the injured person must prove that the business establishment had actual or constructive knowledge of the dangerous condition and should have taken action to remedy it. Constructive knowledge may be proven by circumstantial evidence showing that: (a) The dangerous condition existed for such a length of time that, in the exercise of ordinary care, the business establishment should have known of the condition; or

Slip and fall cases are extremely fact dependent. For example, in the recent case of Dominguez v. Publix, the appellate court was presented with these facts: Dominguez slipped and fell on some laundry detergent that spilled from a bottle that had just fallen from a Publix store shelf. The video recording shows at the time the bottle fell a Publix manager was examining shelves at the opposite end of the aisle. Upon hearing the crash he ran to the spot of the spill. The manager then straddles the spill and bends over to right the bottle nine seconds after it fell. Four seconds later, Ms. Dominguez rounds into the aisle and slips on the detergent. The manager’s back is to Dominguez as she turns into the aisle. As evidenced by the video camera, the entire incident, from the time the manager heard the bottle fall to the time Dominguez slipped, consumed thirteen seconds. Because such a short time passed between the spill and the fall, the court decided that Publix was not negligent and could not be held liable. In all of these types of cases, the victim/Plaintiff must prove that the store had either actual or constructive knowledge of the dangerous condition. For example, if the substance on the floor was dirty or had footprints in it, it implies it was there for a while and the store, if they had been making reasonable inspections, should have noticed and cleaned it up or warned about it. Without this knowledge, there is no case. Slip and fall cases are difficult so it is critical that the attorney has the skill to develop the facts and evidence to show notice and negligence in a given case. FAMILY MATTERS Dear Debbie and Karen,
Every summer since my kids were in camp, my husband and I have taken a weeks vacation with a couple we met in college. Since it is getting close I called to begin the conversation about what we want to do this year. To make a long story short, after 27 years of marriage our vacation buddies are divorcing. What a shock. My friend explained that her husband told her that he hasn’t been happy for a very long time but they were so occupied raising their kids and growing a business that he just kept going. Now that they are done with building all that, he has decided he is done. I asked her what done means and she explained that what it means is that their lives as a family have been good but the marriage got dull and boring and he wants to call it quits. No counseling, no conversation, it’s just over! I still can’t believe it. After having a day or two to soak this up I realize that I will miss these weeks together more than I would have ever guessed, but a bigger wake-up call was wondering if this could happen to me. I see a lot of similarities in my marriage and never would think divorce was in the cards. I don’t want to upset the apple cart by finding something wrong or thinking it is contagious, but I don’t want to wait until it is too late, and we are done! I would love to hear your thoughts. - J.P., Parkland
Dear J.P.,
Your letter speaks to a common marital virus known as complacency. With so much going on in our lives we often don’t see the “forest through the trees” or what is right in front of us. Sometimes couples come to us describing vague symptoms that tell them something is wrong. They go about their daily lives and while it is all seems very nice, it is not really good. Emotions such as frustration or boredom go somewhere. Either they get dealt with and discarded or they get compacted down and one day rise to the surface, like you described, seemingly out of nowhere. The reality is, it isn’t out of nowhere; your friend just missed or ignored the signs. Some couples explain that they no longer spend time together, or share activities that they used to enjoy; others mention not feeling appreciated or valued or like they are special anymore. While this doesn’t have to herald the end of the marriage, these types of feelings and comments are certainly a wake up call. We often tell our couple clients that it is helpful to schedule a “marriage check-up” periodically to make sure that they are on “the same page” and both are satisfied with the relationship. These check-ups provide the opportunity for couples to sit down together to openly and honestly discuss both the positive and negative aspects of their relationship in a comfortable, confidential, and non-judgmental environment. As marriage and family therapists, we are able to guide couples toward conversation that will result in a positive outcome; very different from discussions at home that often result in an argument. Instead of looking for what is “wrong” in the relationship, we help couples to identify what is “right”, and what they can do more of in order to move forward in a healthy and happy way. Family Therapy Associates, “a center for positive change”, located in the Coral Springs/ Parkland area, is co-directed by Karen Kaplan, MS. Ed., and Dr. Debbie Swayman, both licensed Marriage and Family Therapists (LMFT)’s. The practice focuses on relationship issues involving couples, families as well as life transition issues. Be Happier NOW You work, you run, you schedule, you focus, you strive - all for the ultimate goal…happiness, peace and fulfillment. Happiness. Isn’t that what we all, deep down, are working toward? I can go on and on with tips of what to do to increase your happiness and joy. Right now, let’s walk through the 3 things to stop doing to feel an instant shift in increased happiness, more peace and deeper fulfillment. I know, I’m excited too!
The 3 Shifts to Happiness: 1. NO MORE COMPARISON! ‘Comparison-itus’ serves no one. When you compare yourself or your life to that of someone else’s, you are in judgement. Judgement is toxic and skews the way you see the world. It’s that feeling of “look how perfect their life is” when you see a post on Facebook or “She’s so pretty and always has it so together” when you see your coworker. When you compare, you are in someone else’s business. When you are in someone else’s business, you are ignoring your own. So, stay in your lane. Stay focused on you. Remember, where your focus goes, your energy flows.
2. SAY GOOD-BYE TO MULTI-TASKING! I understand and appreciate that we have been raised in a society that encourages us to believe to do more, do it faster, accomplish accomplish, get it all done, schedule more activities, cram it in, more more more, and that if we are great at doing multiple things simultaneously then we are really awesome and valuable. I’m here to tell you that multi-tasking is bullshit. Multi-tasking is ineffective and exhausting, not to mention it’s burning you out and making you feel bad about yourself. There’s no rush or expectation, other than what you are inflicting on yourself. Decide what your priorities of the day are and chunk out time to be present and focused on each thing during that moment in time. Then move to the next. And if the dishes stay in the sink or you let your child drop their 3rd extracurricular activity, the earth will continue to spin. 3. EXPECTATIONS BE GONE! At the root of 95% of your disappointment, frustration and let down is a failed expectation. Here’s the thing, when we create an expectation we are basically taking our ideals, beliefs and ways of being, and throwing it onto someone or something else, expecting them to deliver precisely in that way. Trouble is, no one is you. Anytime you utter a should, a supposed to, a why aren’t they just…it’s an indication that you are sitting with an expectation. The

thing about life, is that if often doesn’t look the way we think it will. To be peaceful, it’s better to be open to what actually is, instead of what you think it should be. Which one of these 3 shifts resonates with you the most? You know, the one that as you read it makes you say, “Omg, that’s totally me, I totally do that all the time.” Pick that one and try it on. ‘Trying it on’ means practicing awareness and interrupting the behavior, for a short period of time. When you feel lighter and happier as a result of the change, you will easily continue to make it more permanent. Remember, you’re a student of life.

REAL ESTATE BY ANDI WITES
Staging Your Home For Pictures
T
here’s a reason they say, “A picture is worth a thousand words…” In real estate, the right pictures can bring a buyer to your home; the wrong pictures can send negative messages about your property.
with all features of the flow of the floor plan, ceilings, floors, windows, etc. An amateur video cannot possibly do the job in this case either. The investment in professional photography is worth every penny. On this fact I can attest!
So how do you maximize the use of photography to attract buyers to your home? Here I continue the discussion from last month’s article about home staging. This month I address specifically the importance of pictures and videos. Suffice it to say that while magazines and newspapers still play a role in marketing real estate, the sheer number of web sites devoted to residential property speaks to the magnitude of Internet Presence. As an example, Coldwell Banker listings are on 550 different internet web sites and 13 different language sites marketing real property.
STAGING IS IN THE DETAILS Remember, the basic rules are: “less is more” “reduce the clutter” and “remove collections and too many personal items and pictures.” We want to give the prospect a reason to come and see the home and not to eliminate it. With this said, small bedrooms, many of which have vivid paint colors do not make a statement except…..”we would have to paint!” I find that small rooms look like advertisements for bedspreads and headboards.
HIRE A PROFESSIONAL There is a world of difference between professional photography and the average camera shot taken by a smart phone or pocket sized digital camera. The wide angle lens, lighting and professional eye of a photographer all contribute to the quality of photos, and the ability for them to be reproduced for display on the Multiple Listing System and real estate web sites. Virtual Tours that have the capability of capturing 360 degrees moving right, left, up and down are an exceptional way to provide the viewer
FOCUS ON THE STRONG POINTS The strong points will overcome the weak points once the buyer has entered the home. Feature areas that have been updated and upgraded, as well as exterior elevations, patios, yards and pools. In the case of a home that needs updating spruce it up by clearing off shelves and countertops, remove pictures from the refrigerator and do not feature small bathrooms unless remodeled. Add some greenery here and there, a centerpiece on the table, a fruit bowl, a throw over a worn couch and in a master
bedroom add nice pillows on the bed. And don’t forget to take the rafts and charcoal off the patio! BARE IS BETTER Eliminate dated window treatments if possible. The windows are better bare. And here too, remove brica-brac that takes away the simplicity of the walls and shelves. For example, a person with contemporary tastes can be turned off by country accents, when in fact, the house itself may be traditional with a versatile floor plan. After you have arrived at the right price to list your home, discuss with your agent the plan for photography and its use in marketing your home. You can increase the perception of a home’s desirability and value by using the right pictures and videos. Public Works achieves National Accreditation Broward Health Coral Springs in conjunction with the City of Coral Springs held their annual Half Marathon & 5KRace for Women’s Wellness—all in the name of breast cancer, with proceeds benefitting the Lisa Boccard Breast Cancer Fund. The event raised funds for women who cannot afford mammograms and proceeds go directly to patients’ needs. Since its inception, the fund has screened more than 2,000 women, of which 90 tested positive for cancer. These women are still alive today, thanks in part to the early screening made possible by the Lisa Boccard Fund and the additional services they received within the Broward Health system.
The City of Coral Springs Public Works Department is the first Accredited Agency in Broward County, the 11th in the State, and 121st organization in the nation. The award is granted for four years with a mandatory update every two years demonstrating continuous service improvement. “We are honored by this recognition and are extremely proud of our team,” Director of Public Works Rich Michaud said. “Serving our residents with the highest standards is our top priority.”
This year, more than $42,000 was raised and had a sold-out crowd with more than 3,000 participants, spectators, vendors, and volunteers.

Coral Springs American Little League offers baseball to children ages 7- 16 that live throughout the community. Their main goal is to teach our little ones about teamwork, sports and competition. The volunteer coaches and assistant coaches work very hard with our children on practices, games and help them learn to play on a team, demonstrate good sportsmanship, build friendships, and develop into leaders. The Astros families are very dedicated with helping this team grow over the season and also about having fun with kids. The little league has been around for many years and has values to uphold and instill in the youth. Courage, loyalty, and character both on the field and off.

From Townie to County Michael Udine: A Local Pioneer By Brooke Bitton Ahh, Broward Count y! Home to approximately 1.8 million people (recorded by the United States Census Bureau in 2013), including Michael Udine! A Broward Count y Commissioner for the cities of Coral Springs, Parkland, Tamarac, and Nor th Lauderdale, and a Broward resident since 1980, you could pret t y much c all Michael Udine a Broward Count y native. Udine graduated from J.P. Taravella High School in Coral Springs, and then c ontinued his educational career at the Universit y of Florida, and then, the Universit y of Florida Law School. Udine has both personal and professional ties to the Broward Count y area. He not only went to school here, he and his wife raised their children here, and he is also a par tner in the law f irm, Udine and Udine, which has been in operation in Coral Springs for 25 years. A brief histor y of Broward Count y: it was established in 1915, and was named af ter Napoleon Bonapar te Broward, a past governor of Florida. Once deemed a “land unf it for human habitation”, Broward Count y is now a much thriving metropolis. In fact, it is the 17th most populated area in the countr y! Before beginning his tenure as a Broward Count y Commissioner, Udine was the Mayor and Cit y Commissioner for the Cit y of Parkland. “ Seeing all the great things that happened in Parkland”, and how he was able to make a positive contribution to the cit y, was what motivated him to eventually run for Broward Count y Commissioner. “ It was a great stepping stone”, and the experience was “invaluable”, he says; however, as Udine moved from helping manage Parkland’s small cit y, to assisting in the management of an entire district, he found that the agenda, problems, and issues became more complicated, and so did the numbers. “ There are a lot more zeroes in the budget ”, he says. To put that in actual dollars, Broward Count y’s budget is $ 4. 2 billion (yes, billion)! Though that seems like a lot of dough, for a district that is the sec ond largest in the state, is it ever enough? There is a laundr y list of things that need to be done in order to keep Broward Count y progressing, including managing the count y’s policies, airpor ts, seapor ts, and municipalities. The responsibilities that go with the job are mind boggling! Acc ording to Udine, ser ving as commissioner, and previously working to represent the Cit y of Parkland cer tainly has its rewards. We look at the federal government as our bread and but ter; but, in Udine’s opinion, it all c omes down to local government, where, “ We truly solve the bigger issues, and make a dif ference in our neighbors’ lives”. An additional benef it is seeing people he knows at neighborhood stores such as Publix. Udine does not shy away from making himself accessible to the citizens of our c ommunit y. From kids to seniors, he talks to ever yone, and helps to “ Solve the ever yday problems that mat ter in our lives”.

MAY 2017
Udine star ted his role as a Broward Count y Commissioner in November 2016, and will hold the seat until November 2020. He c an run for a total of three four-year terms. His dreams for Broward Count y ’s future are f inding more af fordable housing solutions, improving transpor tation net works, maintaining Broward’s airpor ts, which houses Emirates Airlines, a world- class airline that adds hundreds of millions of dollars per year to the economy, instilling a premier seapor t, and upholding Broward’s reputation as a “premier tourist destination”, which also aids in generating revenue through much needed tourist dollars. If you are politically active, are looking to bec ome more involved in politic s, or you are considering running for of f ice, Udine has some words of wisdom: 1) Get out in the communit y (net work) 2) Maintain your core values 3) Be true to yourself Udine not only lef t an imprint in Parkland with the buildings (t wo public safet y buildings) parks, and farmer ’s market that he helped make possible…but he is also leaving a stamp for the entire c ount y. To Michael Udine, ser ving as a public of f icial all c omes down to helping the people in the communit y, and making the c ommunit y a bet ter place for all of its citizens. Broward Count y may have been named for former Governor Napoleon Bonapar te Broward, but it is also people like Michael Udine, who continue Broward’s legacy, making Broward Count y the place we are proud to call home. So, remember, if you ever see Michael Udine at Publix, stop by and say, “ Hi! ”

TherapIes 4 KIDS What is autism spectrum disorder (ASD)?
Parkland’s Premier Pilates/Barre Studio
954-575-2121
Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) or autism is a developmental disorder that affects a person’s communication and social interaction. Individuals with ASD also have restricted and repetitive behavior, interests and activities. These characteristics fall across a “spectrum” ranging from mild to severe. While one person may have symptoms that impair his or her ability to perform daily activities, another may have only mildly noticeable differences and have few, if any, functional impairments. Typically, children with autism do not learn in the same way as others and do not necessarily learn from observing their peers. They benefit from being taught in systematic way that may include repetition, reinforcement, natural environment training and social skills.
Why Choose ABA? Applied Behavior Analysis is an evidence-based intervention supported by decades of research demonstrating its effectiveness for learners with and without special needs. ABA is considered the gold standard for working with individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorder. Hundreds of autism-specific studies have proven the effectiveness of ABA for both teaching skills and reducing challenging behavior. Research also indicates that many learners in ABA programs achieve more progress than those in programs involving several different methods.
What Does ABA Involve? The goal of ABA intervention is two-fold: To increase useful and desired behaviors that can improve the individual’s quality of life (communication, social, academic, self-help, and leisure skills) and to decrease behaviors that interfere with learning, relationships, or may be harmful. Each objective or “target behavior” in an ABA program must have meaningful social significance for the person. This means that goals are individualized and prioritized to promote their independence and quality of life.
Who Should Provide ABA Services? The credential to look for is Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA). Obtaining this certification requires graduate coursework, extensive supervised experience, a national exam, and ongoing continuing education. There are various levels of registration/ certification from technician to masters and doctoral-level behavior analysts (see www.bacb.com).

HEALTH & WELLNESS BY DR. SIMON WONG
Estimated Tax Payments And The Underpayment Penalty If a taxpayer does not meet one of the above exceptions they are required to make estimated tax payments. Once a taxpayer is required to make estimated tax payments, they can keep safe from underpayment penalties by paying in, through withholdings and/or timely estimates, at least 10 0% of the prior year ’s tax liabilit y or, 110% of your prior year ’s tax liabilit y if the prior year ’s adjusted gross income was greater than $150,0 0 0. As an alternative, if you pay into withholdings and make timely estimates of at least 9 0% of your current year ’s tax liabilit y, you will not be subject to an underpayment penalt y. The last method for minimizing exposure to underpayment penalties is annualization of income. In cases where a taxpayer has lower income and higher inc ome periods during the tax year, this method allows the taxpayer to make estimated tax payments more in line with the income earned. Therefore, if the taxpayer earns much lower income in the f irst quar ter than say in the four th quar ter, the f irst quar ter estimated would be much reduced. The tax payments will be made up in the four th quar ter when more inc ome is earned. Under this method, no underpayment penalt y will apply where the taxpayer pays in at least 9 0% of the current year tax, based on annualization of the actual year-to - date income for each quar ter of the tax year. To take advantage of all these exceptions Form 2210 must be completed and f iled with the taxpayer ’s Federal income tax return. Many taxpayers tr y and catch up on their underpayment shor t falls by increasing their withholdings from wages through a bonus paid at year end. It is impor tant to remember that if you pay a bonus at year end, only 25% of the “additional” withholdings can be carried back to eliminate a f irst quar ter payment shor t fall. Similarly 25% will be treated as being paid in each of the succeeding quar ters. If the shor t fall is greater than 25% of the amount of the withheld amount at year end, penalties will still apply for each quar ter the total applied is shor t. Clearly, if earned income from say a par tnership or a f low though S Corporation is signif icant, there may not be adequate withholdings available to meet a taxpayer ’s withholding requirements or to cure shor t falls in the earlier quar ters. It is therefore essential that quar terly estimates and withholdings from wages be c oordinated throughout the year. Providing your tax advisor with the requisite information will enable him or her to insure you will not be subject to underpayment penalties. Not withstanding, if you wish to c onser ve your c ash for alternatives where your return might exceed the c ost of penalties, you may wish to make such investments, and thereby c onsider the imposition of penalties as a mere c ost of doing business. * * * This ar ticle provides generalized tax and financial information for educational purposes only. Strengthening our immune system Our immune system does a remarkable job of defending us against diseasecausing microorganisms. But sometimes it fails: A germ invades successfully and makes you sick. In the quest of boosting our immune system, most of us probably have encountered numerous claims by many vitamins or herbal preparations in the market. The immune-boosting industry thrive on our unshakable belief in the quest continues to flourish. While genetic does play a significant role in our immune response to different disease, but the notion of superhuman health remains at best unproven and at worst a fiction. This is because of the highly individual and complex nature of our immune systems, which are almost as specific to each of us as our fingerprints. Some of us do win the equivalent of genetic lotteries and inherit a set of immune system genes that are particularly good at dealing with certain virus, therefore rendering them less susceptible ranging from common cold to certain type of sexually transmitted diseases. But those few lucky ones are still susceptible to all other pathogens just like the rest of us. Stress, may that be emotional or physical, play a big role in our immune response and adaptation. Modern medicine, which once treated the connection between emotions and physical health with skepticism, has come to appreciate the closely linked relationship of mind and body. In my previous articles, I have discussed extensively how stress compromises our immune system through the autonomous nervous system by the interaction between sympathetic (fight or flight) and parasympathetic control (rest and digest) and some effective preventive measures such as meditation, yoga, and acupressure massage. We all probably have personal experience how easily we acquire sickness after stressful events. The aging process itself leads to a reduction of immune response capability, which in turn contributes to more infections, more inflammatory diseases, and more cancer. There

appears to be a connection between nutrition and immunity in the elderly. A form of malnutrition that is surprisingly common even in affluent countries is known as “micronutrient malnutrition.” Micronutrient malnutrition, in which a person is deficient in some essential vitamins and trace minerals that are obtained from or supplemented by diet, can be common in the elderly who tend to eat less and often have less variety in their diets. So while a mega-doses of any vitamin is probably not going to benefits. For the elderly and those picky eaters (e.g. skipping vegetable ), it might benefit to take in some micronutrient supplements. There is some evidence that various micronutrient deficiencies — for example, deficiencies of zinc, selenium, iron, copper, folic acid, and vitamins A, B6, C, and E — alter immune responses in animals. Lifestyle is still the best bet we have to strengthen our immune system. Every part of your body, including your immune system, functions better when protected from environmental assaults and bolstered by healthy-living strategies such as these: Don’t smoke. Eat a diet high in fruits, vegetables, and whole grains, and low in saturated fat. Exercise regularly. Maintain a healthy weight. Control your blood pressure. If you drink alcohol, drink only in moderation. Get adequate sleep. Take steps to avoid infection, such as washing your hands frequently and cooking meats thoroughly. As always, getting your regular medical screening tests for people in your age group and risk category and starting any supplement or exercise regiment only after a thorough discussion with your primary care providers. Surprising Ways to Get Your Probiotics
C
hances are you’ve heard the term probiotics and know that these good bacteria that live in your gut promote healthy digestion. Did you know that probiotics are also key to a healthy immune system and protein absorption?
while researchers are still unraveling exactly how these bacteria accomplish all that they do, it’s understood that probiotics help establish a healthy environment in your digestive tract, which is important considering 70 percent of your body’s immune system resides there. another thing scientists have found is that probiotic benefits are strain-specific, which means it matters which probiotic is used in the products you buy. the more science reveals about them, the clearer it becomes that probiotics are something you want to consume on a daily basis. now incorporating them into your diet has become easier than ever before. For thousands of years, many cultures relied on fermented foods like yogurt, sauerkraut and kimchi to obtain probiotics. then, pasteurization became popular and most of the bacteria in fermented food was killed – even the beneficial kind. Since then, people have relied on supplements to get probiotics, but today an increasing number of food and beverage companies are introducing everyday offerings that include the healthy bacteria and can easily be added to daily routines.
the secret to these new probiotic foods and beverages is a unique probiotic strain called ganedenbc30, which is one of the only strains that can withstand extreme heat and cold, plus survive extended periods on grocery store shelves, with science and research backing its benefits. This means that you can now get your probiotics from many of your favorite foods and drinks without taking pills. the next time you’re at the grocery store, take a closer look and you’ll find more than 500 foods and beverages on the shelves with this strain in a variety of surprising categories that your entire family will love. Here are a few unique ways to get those good bacteria:
Baking Products
Finished products often have health benefits, but probiotics can now be found in the ingredients used for baking, as well. From sugar and buttery spreads to baking mixes themselves, a variety of probiotic options can easily be added to your next baking project.
Beverages
whether you prefer tea and coffee or juices and waters, there are probiotic options on the shelves for cold and hot beverage drinkers alike. Look for well-known brands like suja or bigelow that are leading the way in innovative probiotic products.
Frozen Foods
in the past, frozen products weren’t a well-known option for probiotics, but these days you can find healthy bacteria added to a variety of items, including breakfast burritos, popsicles and even ice cream.
Snacks
Now, you can also get digestive and immune benefits in a delicious treat. Probiotics are taking over the snacking category, and companies have found ways to add them to options including chocolate, granola, trail mix, nut butters, kale chips, cookies and even Mariani fruit snacks. For a full list of healthy and convenient everyday probiotic foods and beverages, visit GanedenBC30.com/products.

Jake Jake is my Cornish Rex cat. He is 14 years old. Loves to be brushed. He is highly intelligent, loving and demanding. Wants attention from everyone that visits our home. Not as naughty as he looks.
Sawyer Sawyer is the official mascot of Serenity Insurance Services. He will be 3 years old on June 4th. He spends 3 days a week “working” in the agency. When he’s not working he really enjoys his leisure time living in downtown Ft. Lauderdale.
Abigail My name is Abigail Von Doodle. My parents call me Abbey. I was a stray on the streets and just 6 months old, when I found my way to my furrever home one rainy day in June 2014. It was very frightening on the streets, and when I finally found my parents, I was very thin and had a few scars from things I no longer think about. I have gained 20 pounds since then! I love playing with coconuts and eating carrots, and going for walks every morning with my mum, listening to dad play guitar, and debating ideologies with the cat.

How Your Pet May Improve Your Health (Family Features) When you’re sick and your cat curls up on your lap, you might think you feel a little better. If you take your dog to work, you may notice that the day is less stressful. Or if you travel with your four-legged friend, maybe you think you sleep better. Turns out you don’t just think you feel better, but your pet may actually make you healthier. A growing body of scientific research supports that this “pet effect” is real. Animal health company Zoetis has launched a campaign called The Pet Effect to raise awareness about how pets make people healthier and how, by extension, the veterinary professionals who keep pets healthy are key contributors to human and public health. The company has launched this campaign with the Human Animal Bond Research Institute (HABRI). “We’ve learned that human well-being is enhanced because of a healthy relationship with a pet. Now we want to educate pet owners, veterinarians, doctors, employers and non-pet owners about these overall health benefits,” said Dr. J. Michael McFarland, group director, companion animal marketing at Zoetis. “We are hopeful this will help improve policies regarding pets in public places and also improve public health.” The research collected by HABRI shows a variety of potential positive effects of pets; for example, that having a dog or cat can lower your blood pressure and reduce the risk of heart disease. One study from the University of Minnesota even found that people who have never owned a cat have a 40 percent higher relative risk of death from a heart attack. Other research shows that pets may help prevent allergies in children, strengthen the immune system, increase social interaction, benefit children with autism and provide relief for victims of post-traumatic stress disorder. Pets may also provide mental health benefits. Studies show that dogs and cats can reduce several symptoms of depression, including loneliness, loss of interest and feelings of worthlessness. Pets are also shown to reduce stress and anxiety.

Human health professionals are starting to take notice that pets change people at more than just the emotional level. A HABRI study found that 97 percent of physicians believe there are health benefits to owning a pet and most of them had recommended a patient get a pet. Veterinarians are key to educating pet owners about the many benefits of The Pet Effect. Research from HABRI overwhelmingly illustrates that pet owners have a high level of trust in their veterinarian and more than 60 percent would be more likely to visit their veterinarian if he or she discussed the human-animal bond.

ven as 2017 begins, Rosemary Krieger of boca Raton is still in shock, she admits, from an event that took place in late 2016.

when a shaky, stunned and teary-eyed Rosemary reached the podium, she thanked the nearly 1,000 people in the audience at the 29thAnnual woman Volunteer of the Year Luncheon & Fashion show at the boca Raton Resort & club. she had particularly kind words for her husband, ben, longtime partner in giving, and her three children who flew in from around the country: sons Kenneth, from New York and gregory, from Delaware, and daughter, catherine Krieger-Nelson, from Dallas. “I’ve gotten flowers, emails and calls,” said Rosemary in a recent interview, her smiling face still beaming with excitement. “i didn’t expect to get the award. i am still in shock.” many in the audience were themselves in tears as they stood and applauded Rosemary, whose beneficence has helped dozens of nonprofits, from AVDA (Aid to Victims of Domestic Abuse), the YmcA, march of Dimes, george snow scholarship Fund, wayne barton center, st. Jude church, boca Helping Hands and Florence Fuller child Development center, to name a few. Education and Arts Leadership
Among those at her table was AVDA executive Director Pam o’brien, who nominated Rosemary for the award. “she is a true giver who thinks of others before herself,” said O’Brien. “She wants to make sure that women and children in need have a safe place to go.”

the generous lady from boca has a simple philosophy about giving. “You don’t think about it, you just do it. I has to come from the heart.” coincidentally, barely a month after receiving the honor, Rosemary has jumped back into an AVDA cause. she is on the committee planning the Feb. 21 “Heart of a Woman” luncheon fundraiser at the Boca Resort. The speaker will be Michelle Knight, one of the three women abducted, imprisoned and repeatedly raped by Ariel castro at his home in cleveland. Nabbed by the suspect between 2002 and 2004 were Knight (who has changed her name legally to Lilly Rose Lee), Georgina DeJesus and Amanda Berry. They finally escaped in 2013 when Castro was captured, tried and sentenced to life plus 1,000 years in prison. He committed suicide behind bars.

Coral Springs Police and Fire Coral Springs Select New Communications Tele-Communicator Administrator Honored
Chief Tony Pustizzi and Fire Chief Frank Babinec selected Kathy Liriano to head the Public Safety Communications for police and fire. Communications Administrator Liriano is an eight-year veteran of the department. She was promoted to Shift Supervisor in 2012 and continued her education through the Association of Public-Safety Communications Professionals (APCO). Kathy says the many responsibilities she had in Communications, and serving as administrator for the previous and current CAD systems, helped prepare her for this new role. Kathy believes the future of Public Safety Communications will have a lot of technological growth, including text to 9-1-1. She has many goals for the Coral Springs Communications Division, which include revamped training and building stronger relationships with police and fire personnel to ensure the lines of communication are always open. Kathy is especially proud of the personnel she now manages, saying “My goal is to help each dispatcher and supervisory team to reach their full potential and be the best at what they do.” Additionally, she wants to ensure her personnel are recognized as first-responders and reclassified in the federal government’s classification system describing occupations in the United States to a Protective Service Occupation. We look forward to Kathy’s leadership in Communications and appreciate her dedicated service.

MAY 2017
The Coral Springs Police Department is proud to announce that Telecommunicator, Erin Kafka, has been awarded the Tom Gallagher Memorial Public Safety Award for 2017. This award is awarded in recognition and appreciation for exemplary leadership and distinguished and compassionate service. The naming of the award is in honor of public safety telecommunications professional, Thomas W. Gallagher, Jr., who proudly served as Pembroke Pines Police and Fire Rescue Communications Chief for many years before he passed away suddenly in September 2012. A 10year veteran of the Police Department, Erin was selected based on her leadership & compassion, as well as her dedication to provide the best level of service to any one she encounters including our officers, citizens and visitors to the City of Coral Springs. One great example of Erin’s work is the handling of police main channel during the Coral Square Mall shooting that occurred on November 26, 2016. Erin held her composure throughout the incident, kept the units on scene and those still responding informed with details that were coming in from the witnesses on scene. Erin was able to relay what arriving units were advising and keep all units informed. Erin was also able to assist the Incident Commander with pertinent information prior to the request of such information. She is always two steps ahead to ensure what is needed, before it is even requested. Erin’s actions during this critical incident directly affected the overall outcome of the situation. She was recognized by the Broward County Commission on April 4, 2017.

A Healthy Smile is Always in Style When Dr. Danielle Battisti talks about her orthodontic patients, her whole face lights up. For her, creating healthy, straight smiles is more than just a profession, it’s something she truly enjoys. “I absolutely love children”, Dr. Battisti said of her patients. Dr. Battisti, wo has four of her own children, a set of 11 year old twins, a daughter who is 13, and a son who is 16, said her philosophy is to deliver the highest quality care in a warm and friendly environment. She doesn’t just focus on her patient’s teeth, but also on their overall well-being while in her care. Getting braces, she said, can be an adjustment for kids in their preteen and ten years. She strives to make it a positive, comfortable experience. “A lot of times it’s just about the teeth,” says Dr. Battisti. “It’s about how they feel. It’s the whole child. There is a child attached to those braces.” Her high tech office is equipped with digital x-rays, a 3D digital scanner to replace traditional dental impressions, a five chair orthodontic bay with televisions, state of the

art sterilization, an in-house lab, refreshment area, and a game room. Battisti Orthodontics offers the full array of orthodontic services for patients of all ages, including surgical orthodontics, Invisalign, Invisalign Teen, Dentofacial Orthopedics, Interceptive Treatment, and correction of crowding, open bites, deep bites, missing teeth, overbite, underbite and spacing.
properly to prevent collapse. Bite problems can also lead to premature loss of teeth, destruction of bony structures, speech and eating problems, difficulty in caring for teeth and premature tooth decay, as well as emotional distress. “If your teeth are lined up properly and you have good support, you will have long term stability,” she says.
Dr. Battisti offers the most current treatment available including indirect bonding, which can affix braces onto the teeth in a matter of 3-5 minutes by using a lab created mold and a special light. “It’s very quick and easy, “ she says. “It is a lot easier on the patient.”
Dr. Battisti, DMD, MDS, MSEd, is a native of Northeastern Pennsylvania, and earned a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Scranton. She continued her education, earning both a Doctor of Dental Medicine (DMD) degree and a Masters of Science in Education from the University of Pennsylvania. Upon completion of specialty training in Orthodontics at the University of Connecticut, Dr. Battisti received a Masters in Dental Science (MDSc) and Certificate in Orthodontics. Dr. Battisti is the recipient of numerous scholastic and industry awards and achievements.
She also installs temporary anchorage devices, a device which is temporarily attached to the bone for a variety of orthodontic treatment. Dr. Battisti and her staff maintain high levels of accreditation and are continually pursuing ongoing education to stay on top of latest technology and trends. A beautiful smile is the most welcome outcome of orthodontics, but the added health benefits are just as important. People oftentimes need treatment to align their jaw joints, and to create a bite that will fit together
Although she keeps busy with her practice, Dr. Battisti loves spending quality time with her husband Jonathan and children. She is a frequent volunteer at her children’s school and the biggest cheerleader at their hockey and soccer games.

Whether you’re headed to the gym or trying to power through a busy summer day, protein bars and drinks provide a steady fuel source. Many high-protein and high-fiber snacks can create sugar spikes and crashes, so it’s important to look for a protein boost that is low in carbs and sugar, such as Atkins Lift protein bars and drinks. Lift contains high-quality ingredients, including whey protein and coconut oil in the bars and whey protein, no sugar and no artificial color or flavors in the drinks. The bars range from 20 to 21 grams of protein and contain five grams of net carbs, while each beverage has 20 grams of protein and two or less grams of net carbs.
