LETTER FROM THE EDITOR This quote, by Zig Ziglar, a famous motivational speaker, speaks for itself. Make this month a special month where you do that little extra for your neighbor, friend, or even better, someone you do not even know. Since Lucy and I have purchased the business, we have joined a local Rotary Club. The Rotary motto is SERVICE ABOVE SELF, which says it all. Charity has become a very important part of our lives and of our magazines. Besides us covering or sponsoring almost every event and cause that comes along, and believe me, there are many, this month we were able to help so many kids in distress, that I still feel the afterglow. We will all miss the Ringling Bros. Circus, which is shutting down due to lack

of attendance. But FELD also puts on the DISNEY ON ICE shows at the local arenas which all the younger kids just love. We were able to trade a full page in each magazine for 83 tickets to next weekend’s shows, for a total of 189 tickets. We have donated all these tickets to non-profit groups that shelter kids in distress. We also were fortunate enough to give away over $20,000 in clothing to these same groups of children in distress. For us, this month was by far and away, the most gratifying we have been involved with the magazines. We both hope that this will just be the beginning and that all our local businesses will support us going forward. Our staff has worked hard to bring you the most enjoyable viewing experience possible knowing that everyone is looking for the one thing that matters to them. We hope we have achieved that. Thank you.

Daley appointed to Florida League of Cities Board of Directors

Public Works achieves National Accreditation

On March 21, 2017, the Florida League of Cities appointed Coral Springs Vice Mayor Dan Daley to be on the Board of Directors for District 13 at an annual business meeting in Tallahassee.

Striving to become an outstanding provider of services to the Coral Springs community, the Public Works Department has achieved national accreditation. Awarded by the American Public Works Association (APWA), the accreditation examiners reviewed 347 policies, procedures and practices to determine if the Department met the high standards for Accreditation. The Keep Coral Springs Beautiful litter collection program was also named a “Model Practice.”

“It’s an honor to serve on this widely respected municipal organization,” Vice Mayor Daley said. “I look forward to continuing to fight for Home Rule and other issues important to Florida municipalities. The Florida League of Cities’ goal is to promote local self-government and serve the needs of the municipal governments in Florida, which includes advocacy at both state and federal levels, increasing public knowledge of municipal services and issues, providing municipal officials with training and technical assistance, and providing cost effective programs and products to local governments. All officers and directors of the League are elected at the annual meeting and serve a one-year term.

The City of Coral Springs Public Works Department is the first Accredited Agency in Broward County, the 11th in the State, and 121st organization in the nation. The award is granted for four years with a mandatory update every two years demonstrating continuous service improvement.

About Florida League of Cities

The APWA standards cover all areas of public works services, from emergency preparedness, to pot hole repair, water and sewer infrastructure, Facilities maintenance, and solid waste management. Further information concerning APWA accreditation is available at www.apwa.net/accreditation.

The Florida League of Cities was created in 1922 by city officials who wished to unite the municipal governments in the state. From a modest beginning of just a few cities and towns, the Florida League of Cities has become one of the largest state municipal leagues in the nation. Membership in the League is limited to any municipality or other unit of local government rendering municipal services in Florida. Currently, 99 percent of Florida’s 412 municipalities and five charter counties are represented by their voluntary membership in the Florida League of Cities. The membership dues structure is based on population.

“We are honored by this recognition and are extremely proud of our team,” Director of Public Works Rich Michaud said. “Serving our residents with the highest standards is our top priority.”

Contingent Legal Fees For Business

N

o business wants litigation. It is time consuming, aggravating and unpredictable. It doesn’t forward your business purpose; to the contrary, it causes heartburn when you wake up. But most importantly, it opens up a black hole into which endless attorney’s fees seem to get sucked in. And sucked in. And sucked in.

To be sure, hourly billing has its places. In fact, contingency agreements are illegal and unethical in criminal and matrimonial cases. Defending litigation is usually paid hourly because the client is not seeking a recovery- just trying to defend against having to pay one. Transactional work is another example where flat or hourly fees are best.

Also, no business likes to pay lawyers. Still, most businesses pay an attorney because getting things done right moves the business forward, and doing them wrong can be disastrous. Businesses pay attorneys because the attorney is helping to achieve a business goal. For example, in contract negotiations, lawyers for both sides work together to facilitate the win-win deal both sides desire, and the legal fee is simply a cost of bettering both companies.

But in some situations contingency fees for commercial plaintiffs may be ideal for the client, who may not have the money to pay an hourly attorney. And it may benefit the attorney who, in exchange for taking the risk of not being paid at all, receives a significant fee upon a successful outcome. A contingency-fee plaintiff litigator also tends to approach cases differently than other attorneys. He always begins a case with the end in mind. His interests are completely aligned with those of the client. He wants to settle the case successfully, but is ready to take the case to a jury if the other side is unwilling to pay what is due. During the initial meeting with a contingency-fee litigator, he is simultaneously considering possible win-win settlements while imagining his cross-examinations and closing arguments.

Paying your litigator is different. You resent having to sue or being sued and consequently you resent paying your gladiator. The usual win-win use of lawyers to forward business goals is replaced by the goal of defeating the other side. So, litigation is not for the faint of heart, and it should only be used when business solutions fail. Today you are in conflict, but tomorrow you may need one another again. The future may be long and unpredictable, and it is usually unwise to unnecessarily burn a bridge. Still, here are some examples of when litigation is appropriate after business solutions fail:

During the litigation, the contingency-fee litigator is streamlining the case and pushing it toward resolution, whether by settlement or trial. Because he is only paid upon a satisfactory result, he is always fighting to end the case quickly but as favorably as possible. After all, the faster and better he does for the client, the better he does for himself.

1.When you don’t want to become the victim of an economic bully. As a rule bullies pick on the weakest victims, and the people who put up a fight get paid quickly and more fully. Bullies pick on the strong only once before learning their lesson.

Cutler Rader has always worked on a contingency arrangement for our plaintiff clients. We win or lose with our clients. If we win, we get paid a percentage of the collection. If we lose, we don’t get paid but the client has not paid exorbitant attorney’s fees. Simple as that.

2.When they just aren’t paying. This is a toxic business associate you don’t want in the future. But you need to get paid for what you have provided.

If you need to bring a business litigation, a contingency-based lawyer may not only save you hourly fees, but may bring your case to a quicker and better resolution. At Cutler Rader, PL we have over 50 combined years of experience in litigation. For a free consultation give us a call today.

3.When you are in an industry where demonstrated strength is not only respected, but required. Personal Injury lawyers know that insurance companies record which lawyers will take a case to trial, and they grudgingly respect our reputation for fighting ferociously for our clients. As a result, they pay us well and cut corners on the other guys. Let’s assume that you have to engage in litigation; you need to sue or are being sued. The next question is, how do you choose your attorney? This is where aligning the attorney’s interests with yours is crucial. “Alignment” means that you both want (1) a satisfactory solution (2) in a reasonably short amount of time (3) at a reasonable cost. At Cutler Rader we believe that most attorneys are honest and well-meaning. However, in some cases hourly

12

APRIL 2017

billing, because it rewards the attorney for time rather than results, creates a malalignment between the client’s and attorney’s interests. In these situations, a contingency fee arrangement, where the attorney is paid a percentage of the outcome, may be the best solution.

“Varicose Veins are more than skin deep”

By Rachel Galvin

O

ur body does so much day in and day out, and most of that work goes unseen. Our veins have an important job, carrying our blood back and forth to our heart only to be pumped out again. As we age, this daily toil can become more apparent as veins reveal themselves like road maps, especially on our legs. When they become deeper and wider, such as the case of varicose veins, that is when it can be cause for concern. Not only can varicose veins be unsightly, but they also can be a signal that something else is happening within the body to cause them. Each vein has a tiny valve that helps it do its job, but there can be leaks and the valve can malfunction causing the blood to back up and the vein to bulge. Sometimes, having varicose veins can mean the person with them has cardiovascular problems. Many people will seek out a doctor to get rid of the unsightly veins, but sometimes the doctor they consult with is more of a plastic surgeon or dermatologist and does not probe deeper to understand the root cause of the issue. But Dr. Ariel Soffer, M.D., FACC, knows “varicose veins are more than skin deep.” He is board certified in cardiovascular disease and, for over 20 years, he has focused his practice on aspects of the cardiovascular system, especially varicose veins. According to company spokesperson Adam Kustin, people who have issues with their veins often complain of achy legs or numbness, among other symptoms. In order to ascertain the underlying problem, patients who come into our office undergo an ultrasound. “You and I can walk in and both have the same degree of problems with our veins] and there is no way to tell [the underlying issue] based on the surface,” says Kustin. “It is important to see a doctor.”

sclerotherapy, we inject a saline solution and the blood is magically redirected. It depends on the severity,” he says. “The laser is super accurate and highly effective. It is a low risk procedure.” Compression socks might be used in recovery as well, Kustin adds.

He said that one of the big culprits is inactivity. “When you are on your feet eight to 12 hours a day, not moving ... inactivity is the biggest culprit, or sitting with legs crossed...It also can be genetic,” he says. Mr. Kustin explained that exercising and elevating your legs periodically will help with blood flow. He also recommended compression socks, which he said act like a reverse funnel redirecting blood to the heart. Also weight management is important. The procedure to fix varicose veins can be relatively simple. Most procedures involve closing the vein, sometimes repairing it. “If it is a secondary or tertiary vein, we can close it up; a laser heats it and clamps it shut. If we do

Besides working with veins, The Soffer Health Institute also handle other cardiovascular issues, including primary care, everything from allergies to working with weight management. They work with senior care and also have a concierge service, which allows patients basically to “pay for play,” getting special services like having no wait time, obtaining greater access to the doctor, getting an annual physical and more. Dr. Soffer also keeps his staff up-to-date with the latest medical developments and shares his knowledge on an ABC News Health segment called “Dr. Soffer’s Second Opinion,” and elsewhere. Soffer Health Institute began in Aventura and now there are several locations, including one in Deerfield Beach at 1877 W. Hillsboro Blvd. They plan to open a Weston location next. Members of the staff speaks Spanish, Russian, Hebrew, Creole and Portuguese. For more information, call 305-792-0555 or visit www.sofferhealth.com.

IgnIte Your Power BY TracY, Life & Leadership coach

The Power of Forgiveness Forgiveness means giving up all hope for a better past. ~Lily Tomlin Forgiveness is essential to happiness. Practicing forgiveness offers freedom and peace of mind, yet so many choose to hold on to pain, bitterness and resentment. At the root of many problems and tensions is the unwillingness to forgive, the unwillingness to let go. So what is stopping us from practicing forgiveness? What makes letting go so challenging? The answers lie in our pasts, our upbringing, our triggers…our beliefs. Maybe we believe the illusion that by not forgiving, we will somehow achieve the justice we think we are due. Sometimes we have such a deep need to be “right” that it trumps our capacity to want to heal and be at peace. In some instances, we are under the misguided notion that forgiveness means we are condoning the situation or other person’s behavior. We may even think that if we forgive, we let the other person win. All of these things could be true for you. Let me be clear in telling you they are all bullshit and ego driven. Those thoughts and beliefs will keep you stuck, negative and full of resistance. The other deeper, even more detrimental cousin of not forgiving, is resentment. Resentment is basically the refusal to forgive. In resentment, we sit and ruminate

on whatever it is that happened, replaying it over and over in our minds, further deepening the upset, creating an ugly impact on our existence. Resentment then bleeds into every facet of your relationship with said person or situation, turning you into someone you, more than likely, do not want to be. As a wise person once said, “Resentment is like drinking poison and waiting for the other person to die.” Wow, right? So here’s what you need to know. Here is the empowering belief that will serve you into a life of happiness, joy and freedom: Forgiveness is a GIFT. Forgiveness is a gift to yourself. When you practice forgiveness toward a person, a situation or yourself, you FREE YOURSELF. You disconnect from the connection and burden of the past. You take your power back. You are able to live from a place of love and compassion, opening your heart and soul, and raising your energy in an indescribable way. You become untouchable.

Fill Your Tank with Premium… Foods! Here are some extra tips for better, healthier eating.

As I drive around town I see lots of beautiful cars. They pull into gas stations and fill up their tanks with the best fuel available. Makes sense, right? If you want a machine to run well, you give it the best fuel. However, many Americans do not seem to have the same philosophy when it comes another type of machine called “their body”. More and more we put stuff in our mouths knowing that it lacks good nutritional value. We seem to be ok with sodas, Twinkies and a bag of chips and wonder why it is that we feel sluggish and lack the energy necessary to complete the day. We are ok putting the best fuel possible in our vehicles and somehow fine filling up our body with cheap “junk”. March is National Nutrition Month and we know that with a few simple changes to our eating habits, we can reap big benefits that could have a positive impact on our weight, blood pressure, blood sugar and cholesterol readings. Everyone knows that fruits and veggies are good for you, it just takes extra work, effort and sometimes planning, in order to nourish the proper way. Before you begin any diet changes it is an excellent idea to do a detox or cleanse in order to prepare your body for better nutrition. Vitamin stores and Health-food

Remove fat and skin from meat and poultry before cooking. Grill, broil or bake instead of frying and use nonstick pans instead of cooking with oil or butter. Half your plate should be fruits and vegetables.

markets have many options for these programs. I am partial to a program that has been around for a long time. It is a 21 Day program which helps detox the liver and the kidneys. My wife and I try to do it once a year. It involves eating lots of fruits and veggies, drinking a few shakes, taking some capsules and cutting out some of the “good stuff”, (which we know isn’t so good for you). Whatever the plan, starting something soon is the most important part.

Add beans to salads, soups and stews. Top off pasta or pizza with cut up veggies. Add raisins, bananas, or berries to your cereal. Have a piece of fruit for dessert.

Lastly, Water, Water, Everywhere…. Drink at least eight 8-ounce glasses per day. Water helps in the digestive process, carries nutrients to all the body’s cells and helps the kidneys flush out toxins. FAMILY MATTERS Dear Debbie and Karen,

My husband and I have been married for 16 years, and we have two children ages 11 and 14. The problem is that he thinks that just because they are in school all day, I have nothing to do all day and should go back to work. The worst part is that he has started “tracking me” on my cell phone! When we first agreed to set our phones up for this, it was for safety reasons, especially for the kids. However, it has gotten completely out of hand, and he checks my phone several times a day just to see where I am. He insists that it’s not about trust, and I believe him, but it is about control. I find myself feeling afraid to go to the mall, or to the grocery store, for fear that he will check up on me and ask why I have to shop so much. Being at home is even worse, I feel like if he sees that I’m home all day he’ll really think that I have nothing to do. He doesn’t understand that I enjoy my free time when the kids are in school, it’s “my time” to do whatever I need to do, or nothing at all, because once I pick up the kids I am running with them constantly. The last thing I need or want to do is go back to work! This is not about money (my husband owns his own business and earns a very good living); this is about him thinking he knows what is best for me. Please help – I want to shut off my GPS completely so he can’t track me, but when I mentioned this to him, it caused a huge argument. Any suggestions you have would be greatly appreciated. - Frustrated in Coral Springs

It sounds like you and your husband need to have a long talk about what is important to each of you. Your letter reflects your frustration and sounds to us like you feel your husband is treating you like a child or an employee, but not his wife. You also mentioned several times that he “wants you to go back to work” and “doesn’t understand that you enjoy your free time”. Could it be that he resents your ability to come and go as you please? Trust is of course the foundation of a good marriage, as is mutual respect and the opportunity for both partners to express themselves and feel they are heard. The issues that are really going on here are symbolically represented by the struggle over the use of the GPS, but probably go deeper and you both are having some trouble either identifying what is going on or in finding the right way to communicate what you are feeling. Many couples find themselves stuck and need some help with the dynamics in their relationship. If you find that you and your husband “cannot get unstuck”, please consider a few sessions with a therapist with expertise is relationships who can help you both find some solutions before the problem gets bigger!

LEGALLY SPEAKING BY ALAN J. REINDFELD, ESQ

The Five W’s of Trusts What, Who, Why, Where, And When

S

ince my last article, people have been calling my office and inquiring on what a trust is and its potential benefits. As a result, I have decided to focus this month’s article on answering, what I like to call “The Five W’s of a Trust.”

1. WHAT - a trust is a legal document that transfers property during or after a person’s lifetime for the benefit of someone. For the most part, there are two types of trusts: A Revocable and a Non-Revocable. A revocable trust can be changed or altered at any time by the creator or creators of the trust during his or her lifetime, while a non-revocable trust can only be changed in certain, rare circumstances. 2. WHO - a trust can be made out for the benefit of any person that you may want, including young children, your spouse, a friend, or your parents. 3. WHY - a trust can automatically transfer property without the use of a will or the need to go to court. Additionally, the use of a trust is usually faster than that of a normal will in transferring property and title as well as it helps avoid the lengthy process of probate in courts. A trust also has the following benefits: it secures your property for the benefit of your beneficiaries, it protects the property from claims from creditors while in the trust, and it also ensures your privacy (as a trust does not become a public record like a will does). Some trusts may even better your tax status, if you fall above the taxable exemption.

4. WHERE - a trust can dispose of property anywhere, so long as the local law of where the property is located is followed and the property is properly titled in the name of the trust. 5. REAL ESTATE BY ANDI WITES

What is a home’s square footage? As a Real Estate professional, I know and understand the importance living area square footage is to several aspects of a real estate transaction. What is square footage? Living area square footage is often referred to as “Under AC”. Total square footage is under the roof line, including patios, garage, entry ways. Many Realtors do not provide the buying public with the accurate information. There may be conflicting documents giving different figures such as an original prospectus, a blue print or an appraisal done in the past. Real estate professionals are not required to verify the square footage cited in the listings MLS database. Many sellers are unaware of what their homes’ square footage living or total under roof really is, possibly because the plans were never provided... A recent article in Florida’s Realtor, caught my eye because I find the need for accuracy in this area can lead to a better representation of a home. Square footage is an important number when it comes to buying real estate. Buyers may even narrow their home search online and compare homes based on price per square foot, and some may not even know a 1,950-square foot home exists if they search only for homes 2,000-square feet or larger. In my practice, I ask my sellers if they have a blue print. If they do not, the City of Coral Springs provides us with a copy of the floor plan when requested and usually the room dimensions

are there on the diagram. Now we have accurate square footage, as well as room sizes. This is a great tool for buyers. I leave a copy at every house within a detailed brochure. A prospective purchaser can plan and place their furnishings or visualize changes they may want to make. When doing a Competitive Market Analysis for a homeowner using a subdivisions comparable sales, pendings and active listings, I often must go to the BCPA to find the real living area of home, as the listings in the MLS often show living and total area as the same figure. That cannot be possible. The Broward County Property Appraisers office has a calculation of every home’s size. For a one-story home, it is easy to see the breakdown. It is more difficult on a two-story home. For purposes of taxable value, volume is added to many of the county’s calculations. That adds for additional confusion.

location are all factored into determining value. I always point out to prospective purchasers that room size, ceiling volume, and floor plan play an important part in determining how spacious a home really is. Hallways for instance, are areas that are included in square foot living area. Therefore, a home with minimal hallways will have bigger rooms than a floor plan with hallways. Being flexible on the living area size may turn up a great home, even though the number of square feet of air conditioned space is lower than targeted. A CMA competitive market analysis is complimentary from almost any Realtor.

Accurate information is not only crucial to providing a good CMA, but also it is reliable data for the buying public. And finally, when meeting the appraiser that will represent the lender for the buyer of the home, providing accurate data and a floor plan is greatly appreciated. While an appraiser will do their own measuring, what an agent provides can serve as a check of their measurements. Two things to note here. One, cash buyers often want appraisals. And two, square footage is one aspect of the CMA and appraisal process. The features of a home, the age of its components and the

Broward Health Coral Springs to open brand new Neonatal Intensive Care Unit next year By Nicol JeNkiNs Soon local mothers will be able to enjoy a more comforting experience with the same excellent care at Broward Health Coral Springs when the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit opens next year.

While the physical structure is rapidly changing, the great care provided by the NICU team of experienced physicians and nurses will remain the same. The unit at BHCS is staffed by three full time and one part time physician who are all boarded in Neonatal Perinatal Medicine in addition to their training in general pediatrics. While the medical team is committed to being full time providers at Coral Springs, it should be mentioned that the neonatal doctors are also part of a larger network known as Pediatrix Medical Group, which is a division of Mednax. Pediatrix is the largest provider of neonatal services in the country. Being part of a larger national network of doctors dedicated to great neonatal care allows the doctors to provide the best care possible while still retaining the commitment to personalized and family oriented care. The nursing staff also has a combined experience of over 300 years. Longtime nurse Susan King RN says the expertise and the additional support services, such as extensive breastfeeding support, also helps first-time mothers. Other services such as speech and occupational therapy, nutrition, classes for new mothers, and support groups are also available.

The new NICU, projected to open in June of 2018 in conjunction with the 30th year anniversary of the hospital’s opening, will be completely updated with all private rooms and outfitted with plenty of space for parents to remain with their baby. The relaxing rooms will offer a more luxurious setting with reclining chairs so mothers or fathers can stay the night, a comforting waiting area for family members, brand new state-ofthe-art equipment with all new monitors and Giraffe warmer beds, as well as other amenities. They will also be able to accommodate twins in the same private room without compromising the provision of appropriate equipment at each baby’s bedside. “At present there isn’t the space for our parents to spend the night in the NICU. Many times, the mother is discharged to home 2 to 3 days after giving birth and the baby remains hospitalized. While having a baby in the NICU can be stressful, being able to stay with your baby can make all the difference in the world for a family,” said Dr. Arlene Boykin.

“This is a very exciting time for us. It will benefit our patients and families in Coral Springs, Parkland and the western part of the district. More patients in other areas will be attracted to coming here because it will be a brand new facility,” added Dr. Moscoso.

The Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at Broward Health Coral Springs is part of the Salah Foundation Children’s Hospital and the unit first opened to the local community on July 1st, 1987. It is currently a 10-bed unit and remains staffed with in house neonatologists 24/7. At present, there are 2200-2400 annual deliveries at Coral Springs Medical Center and approximately 10% of babies will require Neonatal ICU care in the newborn period. The new neonatal intensive care unit, labor and delivery suites, and maternity center are part of the hospital’s $64 million-dollar expansion to better serve the needs of the surrounding community. The vision at BHCS is to provide quality services for women and children in northwest Broward County; this area is projected to grow in population 37% by 2040, increasing the demand for all hospital services, and maternity and newborn services in particular. “The new Neonatal ICU unit will continue to focus on family centered care. The mothers and fathers will be able to participate more in their child’s care. The families will be able to stay with their babies in

34

the private rooms; the babies will have more skin to skin contact with their mother; and the moms can continue to actively breastfeed their babies in a more comfortable and spacious environment,” said Dr. Pedro Moscoso, who has been working at the hospital since the opening. “With the new unit, we can provide the environment where parents can be at their child’s beside and they will feel even more involved than they already do. This focus on the entire family unit helps us to deliver more integrated neonatal care, is valuable for optimal growth and development of the baby and may even potentially decrease lengths of stay,” said Dr. Boykin.

To conTAcT cITy news, cALL Lucy (edIToR) AT 954-255-5226

“We see our new maternity center at BHCS to be the place where local mothers want to come and deliver their babies. It will be beautiful and state-ofthe-art,” said Dr. Boykin. There are still opportunities to become a sponsor of the new neonatal intensive care unit expansion. You can even have your family or business name on one of the rooms or bassinets! This is a critical time for us to be reaching out to our community and we want everyone to know about the positive changes going on in our own backyard. We welcome those interested in finding out more about this exciting expansion project to contact either the Broward Health Foundation at 954-355-5148 or Dr. Boykin at either 954-344-4234 or 954-344-3212 (NICU). www.cITynewsMAgAzIne.coM

COMMUNITY NEWS

No foolin’ in April in Parkland The City of Parkland was again ranked the safest city in Florida recently. We have received this distinction many times and, while immensely proud of the ranking and the great work done by the Broward Sheriff’s OfficeParkland District (BSO-Parkland) to achieve it, no one should ever be complacent. It is an ongoing campaign from both BSO-Parkland and City Hall to remind everyone to keep their car doors locked and to store items in your car out of sight—even when parked in your own driveway. Mayor Hunschofsky Taking these common sense measures and others like keeping your garage door closed, are ways to help us ensure Parkland remains one of the safest cities for a long time to come. Now that we have turned the corner to Spring, Parkland’s list of activities increases. This month we will have the final two Parkland Farmers’ Markets of the season: Sunday, April 8th and Sunday, April 23rd. The market will not return until November, so maximize your freezer by storing those most difficult-to-find favorites from the largest farmers’ market in Broward County. Saturday, April 9th is our monthly concert series Eats ‘n’ Beats featuring the Paisley Craze Band and Big City Dogs. As always, we provide not one, but two free concerts on our Parkland Amphitheatre stage while 20 food trucks put the “eats” in Eats ‘n’ Beats. Perhaps the biggest excitement this month in Parkland is that it is time our Big Concert. In addition to your monthly dose of Eats ‘n’ Beats, this year’s Big Concert features the winner of season three of The Voice, Cassadee Pope. After we began negotiations to bring her to our stage in Pine Trails Park on April 29th, she received a Grammy Award nomination for Best Country Duo/Group Performance for her hit song “Think of You” with Chris Young. We are excited to offer this wonderful show this month! On April 15th we feature our Annual Egg Hunt at Terramar Park—a family favorite established for the enjoyment of Parkland’s children. As you can see, we offer many community activities in Parkland to bring our residents together. The hometown feel for which we are known seems to really blossom in April. Feel free to reach out to me at any time at chunschofsky@cityofparkland.org. I enjoy hearing your comments and suggestions. Enjoy April in Parkland and we’ll see you at the Big Concert!

Reading, Writing, Robots And More Come To Life In Broward County Classrooms Broward Education Foundation funds innovative teacher projects

M

arking the 20th Anniversary of their Annual Broward Education Foundation Teacher Expo, the Broward Education Foundation has been helping educators align innovative teaching with today’s societal needs. This year, science, technology, engineering, art and mathematics were just a few of the classroom subjects highlighted in the innovative projects presented by Broward County teachers. More than 332,300 Broward County students have experienced these innovations in their classroom through Broward Education Foundation grants. “We have hosted this fantastic Teacher Expo for two decades. It is a platform for educators to share their innovative ideas with each other,” said Christina Fischer, Broward Education Foundation, chair of the board of directors. “Our Teacher Expo allows best practices to be deployed throughout BCPS classrooms, which creates a learning environment for our students that results in optimal educational outcomes. Sponsored by BrightStar Credit Union and hosted by Nova Southeastern University’s Fischler School of Education & Human Resources, the Teacher Expo allows educators to gather ideas for creative classroom projects, participate in continuing education and hear from inspiring charismatic speakers. “The Expo has such a positive impact on teachers. It’s teachers inspiring other teachers and in the end the winners are our students,” said Broward County School Board Member Laurie Rich Levinson. “Our teachers are incredible and come up with the most innovative ideas.” The innovative projects focus on science, technology, engineering, math, the arts, reading and comprehension, the environment, nutrition and more. The more than 490 teachers in attendance received the tools they need to reimagine education through these projects and introduce their students to new and exciting ideas. “Our Expo and the other innovative learning initiatives of the Broward Education Foundation are meant to support teachers’ dedication and achievement with their students,” said Broward Schools Superintendent Robert Runcie. “As a model for other school districts, the Expo has been an overwhelming success in showcasing the innovative curricula we use to educate our diverse student population.”

Teachers from Cooper City, Coral Springs, Davie, Fort Lauderdale, Hollywood, Tamarac, Miramar and every city in between in Broward County brought their most innovative classroom projects to the recent Teacher Expo. Dona Maggio from Coral Springs High School has been attending the Teacher Expo since the beginning. Her project Reading Across the Curriculum encourages students to increase reading, writing and research skills while developing public speaking proficiency and increasing their ability to use appropriate digital presentation tools. Incorporating the latest technology and project based learning into this innovative approach of pairing fiction and non-fictional texts, primary/ secondary sources, evaluating resources to choose and use information responsibly helped students to become more informed and prepared for the challenges of college and career. “Students are motivated by the pairing of fictional with a non-fictional text and become more engaged in the topic,” says Maggio. “We’re teaching students how to think critically.” Debra Brand from Sawgrass Middle School, who

dressed in superhero attire, uses the topic of super heroes in her Bigger Than Life project to teach students figurative language. Brand teaches English Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) and Level 1 Intensive Reading and developed the project especially for these students. “Superheroes cross all cultural barriers which is why this project is perfect for teaching ESOL students writing and how to identify the different characteristic traits of each super hero,” she said. Established in 1983, the nonprofit Broward Education Foundation (BEF) aligns with Broward County Public Schools by providing support for innovative teaching to advance Pre K-12 achievement; critically needed educational materials for Title I school teachers and students, and scholarships for qualified high school seniors. Each year, the Foundation contributes more than $2 million to Broward County schools, serving as the catalyst for educational excellence. HEALTH & WELLNESS BY DR. SIMON WONG

To get rid of body fat It’s every weight loss enthusiast’s dream to zap belly fat but, far from pure vanity, there’s actually a reason why having a lot of fat in the abdominal region can be dangerous. Fat is stored all over our body, but how does an expanding waistline grow your risk for chronic illness?

Your body’s fat impacts your health differently depending on where it’s stored. While most fat found on other parts of our bodies (think arms, legs, buttocks) are considered “subcutaneous fat,” belly fat is more likely to be “visceral.” Subcutaneous fat” is the pinchable, squishy fat right between your skin and muscle that helps keep you warm, cushions you against shock, and stores extra calories. “Visceral fat” stores calories too, but isn’t as pinchable because it is located in and around your organs. It’s hidden deep within the belly region, which is what makes it firm when you press it. Fat doesn’t just store calories—it’s a living tissue capable of producing and releasing hormones that affect your other organs. Because visceral fat sits near our organs, its release of these chemicals is poorly situated. Having more visceral fat can raise your bad cholesterol and blood pressure. Visceral fat can also make you less sensitive to insulin, which increases your risk for Type 2 Diabetes. Even if you’re thin, you can still have visceral fat around the abdominal region— being “skinny” doesn’t necessarily mean you’re healthy. There’s no sure-fire way to tell visceral from subcutaneous fat short of an expensive CT scan, but it’s important for you to get a rough idea of what your visceral stores are. Here are a few tricks to figure out where your belly stands:

44

APRIL 2017

Waist-to-Hip Ratio: The waist-to-hip ratio (WHR) takes the circumference of your waist and divides it by the circumference of your hips. To measure your hips, stand in front of a mirror then figure out the widest part of your butt and measure that circumference. WHR = (Waist circumference) / (Hip circumference). Men should have a WHR of less than 1 while women should have a WHR of less than 0.8. Family Healthy History: If your parents or siblings have insulin resistance, heart disease or non-alcoholic fatty liver, you may be at a greater risk for storing visceral fat. If you fall in the normal range for WC and WHR, that’s great! Keep working at your weight goals as you see fit. If you’re not there, don’t despair. Because of its proximity to the liver, visceral fat is usually the easier fat to burn. It’s the less risky subcutaneous fat that likes to stick around. Unfortunately, you can’t forcefully spot reduce fat around your belly no matter how many crunches you do. The next best thing is to live a healthy lifestyle. Sweat for 3060 minutes each day. Visceral fat responds well to regular endurance exercises, such as running, biking, rowing, swimming, that elevate your heart rate. As your body uses fat to fuel exercise, it’ll start using up your visceral stores. Eat a well-balanced diet. Eat a diet high in whole grains, fresh fruits and vegetables, and lean protein with calories set for gradual weight loss; about 1-2 pounds per week. Cut way back on added sugars and alcohol since these nutrients will more likely end up as visceral fat.

Apples and Pears: These two fruits give a quick visual of where most of your fat is stored on the body. Pears tend to store fat in the lower extremities (hips, thighs, buttocks) as subcutaneous fat while apples tend to store fat in the upper region (belly, chest) as visceral fat.

Sleep more, stress less. It’s easier said than done, but in order to take care of your physical body, you have to take care of your mental state. Sleep loss and stress can sabotage your health and fitness goals, so learn more about getting a quality night’s rest and use meditation or yoga to calm your mind. Remember, it’s not just about your health; it’s about your happiness, too.

Waist circumference (WC): Feel for the top of your hip bone and circle a tape measure around this point. Men should have a WC of less than 40 inches and women should have a WC of less than 35 inches.

Keeping an eye on your visceral fat may be beneficial, but know that the causes of these chronic diseases are complex. If you’re in doubt, it’s best to speak with your healthcare provider.

PETS OF THE MONTH

COMMUNITY NEWS

Fendi I’m Fendi, a 6yr. old Pomeranian. Everyone seems to love me so much!! I hear them say “oh she’s as white as snow, and so fluffy and those eyes...” If only they knew I love them twice as much. I’m happiness when I’m being hugged, my favorite human is Asha. She found me on the internet in Canada and brought me to my beautiful home in Coral Springs.

Winston Winston is one of my many rescue pups. He is going to be 5 years old on March 26th. He was found with another dog abandoned in a house. He loves to play ball and as you can see he also likes to dress up :-)

Charlie & Theodore This is Charlie and Theodore. They’re sporting their new visors and sunglasses that were purchased at the coral springs art festival.

Should Your Pet Be our Pet of the Month?

Lola & Aila Lola and Aila are our beautiful Golden Girls. We moved from Wisconsin to Boca in October. Rather than rolling in the snow making snow angels, they love chilling on the beach and bringing unconditional love to others! Both are being trained to be canine good citizens and therapy dogs.

Cashew Cashew is quite the adventurous and likes to go kayaking, loves playing with his friend Brady, he’s been to the top of Mt.Evans in Colorado, and played craps at the MGM in Vegas. He’s in training to be our therapy dog. He’s my best friend and unless I’m working out or on a date (sometimes he comes too) he’s with me. His favorite foods include grass fed beef and spinach omelets, wild salmon, and coconut oil. He also will only eat veggies if I cook them for him. He hates them raw. He’s also grain free.

Jamaica Jamaica is a 2 years old male scottie. He is a happy, energetic and loving little buddy! He loves to bark to lizards, and also tease his little brother Pedrito(also a scottie).

To keep your cat healthy, it’s important to look for a cat food with highquality ingredients to help with their nutrition needs from head to tail.

“March is National Nutrition Month, which is the perfect time to re-evaluate what your cat is eating and make necessary changes to ensure you both are on the right path for a happy, healthy life,” said Dr. Jeff Werber, registered veterinarian. “Like humans, cats need a balanced diet to be healthy; look for a premium food that has animal protein as the No. 1 ingredient to help satisfy their nutritional needs and carnivorous appetites.”

Other key elements to look for in your cat’s food include: • Optimal levels of fatty acids for a soft and shiny coat.

• A fiber blend, including prebiotics and beet pulp, for healthy digestion.

• A good mix of premium, high-quality ingredients to contribute to healthy energy levels. Keeping your cat healthy and happy doesn’t stop with general nutrition. It’s also important to pay close attention to other health concerns, like oral care, which is often overlooked.

21287 Boca Rio Rd Boca Raton, FL 33433

“In my experience, one of the most common health concerns I see cats face today is oral care,” Werber said. “That’s why I was happy to see that IAMS released a great-tasting cat food, IAMS Oral Care Complete, specifically designed to help reduce plaque and tartar while also providing cats with a 100 percent complete and balanced nutrition. It’s a win-win.” With the proper nutrition from a quality food, your cat can be healthier inside and out, which means more energy and vitality for playing and bonding. Whether you’re starting a kitten on a new eating routine or reassessing your adult or senior cat’s nutrition, remember the importance of supplying them with a premium cat food that includes high-quality ingredients for lifelong health. Health & Wellness By Dr. LaL BhagchanDani

Obstructive Sleep Apnea

O

bstructive Sleep Apnea is a common disorder. If you have OSA, it means that your airways collapse partly or all of the way while you are sleeping. Muscles of upper airway relax when you fall asleep. If you sleep on your back, gravity can cause tongue to fall back. This narrows the airway and can reduce the amount of air getting in the lungs. Narrowed airways causes snoring by making tissue in the back of throat vibrate. Apnea is when the airway is completely closed, so breathing temporarily stops. The airway can collapse repeatedly during the night. Air cannot get in to your lungs, resulting in lack of oxygen. You wake up so you can start breathing again. Frequent awakenings at night can cause sleepiness during the day. Lack of oxygen and frequent nighttime awakenings have negative consequences for your health.

Signs of Obstructive Sleep Apnea 1. Loud or frequent snoring. 2. Choking or gasping while you sleep. 3. Morning headaches. 4. Daytime sleepiness or tiredness. 5. Trouble concentrating.

Who is at risk for OSA?

You are at increased risk if you are: 1. Overweight. 2. Hypertension. 3. Male with a neck size of 17 inches or more. 4. Female with a neck size of 16 inches or more. 5. Male over the age of 40. 6. Female over the age of 50.

2. Dental oral appliances, which are made by the dentist. They bring the tongue and jaw forward to keep the area beyond the tongue open. 3. Surgical option, UPPP which is done by the ENT specialist.

Not all people with OSA have risks factors. Children can have OSA as a result of large tonsils or narrow airways. Young adults even those who are physically fit may also have OSA.

4. Also, the lifestyle change including quitting smoking, quitting alcohol, reducing weight, sleeping on the side, and keeping the head at 30 degrees also help for the sleep apnea.

How is OSA diagnosed?

5. New treatment option INSPIRE therapy, also available in selective population.

Your health care provider can refer you to a sleep specialist. Sleep study can occur at a sleep center or at your home.

OSA treatment options:

If you have any of symptoms above you may have OSA.

airways open during the nighttime. The patient needs to lose weight, if the patient has intolerance to the CPAP.

1. CPAP which is a Continuous Positive Airway Pressure device, can prevent or reduce serious health consequences of OSA. It can help all levels of the OSA, which includes mildtosevere sleep apnea. It is most common therapy for OSA. It works by keeping the

ven as 2017 begins, Rosemary Krieger of boca Raton is still in shock, she admits, from an event that took place in late 2016.

Lynn Women’s Health & Wellness Institute. (Photo by Dale King)

when a shaky, stunned and teary-eyed Rosemary reached the podium, she thanked the nearly 1,000 people in the audience at the 29thAnnual woman Volunteer of the Year Luncheon & Fashion show at the boca Raton Resort & club. she had particularly kind words for her husband, ben, longtime partner in giving, and her three children who flew in from around the country: sons Kenneth, from New York and gregory, from Delaware, and daughter, catherine Krieger-Nelson, from Dallas. “I’ve gotten flowers, emails and calls,” said Rosemary in a recent interview, her smiling face still beaming with excitement. “i didn’t expect to get the award. i am still in shock.” many in the audience were themselves in tears as they stood and applauded Rosemary, whose beneficence has helped dozens of nonprofits, from AVDA (Aid to Victims of Domestic Abuse), the YmcA, march of Dimes, george snow scholarship Fund, wayne barton center, st. Jude church, boca Helping Hands and Florence Fuller child Development center, to name a few. Education and Arts Leadership

Among those at her table was AVDA executive Director Pam o’brien, who nominated Rosemary for the award. “she is a true giver who thinks of others before herself,” said O’Brien. “She wants to make sure that women and children in need have a safe place to go.”

the generous lady from boca has a simple philosophy about giving. “You don’t think about it, you just do it. I has to come from the heart.” coincidentally, barely a month after receiving the honor, Rosemary has jumped back into an AVDA cause. she is on the committee planning the Feb. 21 “Heart of a Woman” luncheon fundraiser at the Boca Resort. The speaker will be Michelle Knight, one of the three women abducted, imprisoned and repeatedly raped by Ariel castro at his home in cleveland. Nabbed by the suspect between 2002 and 2004 were Knight (who has changed her name legally to Lilly Rose Lee), Georgina DeJesus and Amanda Berry. They finally escaped in 2013 when Castro was captured, tried and sentenced to life plus 1,000 years in prison. He committed suicide behind bars.

ach year the Coral Springs Police Department’s Awards Committee meets to select employees and units who have excelled professionally throughout the previous year. This year we are proud to highlight the following Civilian, Officer and Supervisor of the Year.

Civilian of the Year – Accreditation Coordinator Miriam Simon Miriam Simon was promoted to Accreditation Manager early last, which is also the year that our department underwent reaccreditation by the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement (CALEA) and Commission for Florida Law Enforcement Accreditation (CFA). In addition to coordinating all facets of the reaccreditation process for the department, which is extremely labor intensive, Miriam ensured the agency’s files were compliant and personnel were prepared for the mock and on-site assessment visits. At the conclusion of the department’s assessment for CALEA, the team specifically recognized Miriam for her outstanding performance during their visit and inspection. In less than one week after CALEA’s on-site assessment, CFA were on-site and once again Miriam hosted their assessment in an exemplary manner. Thanks to Miriam’s outstanding efforts, the Coral Springs Police Department was reaccredited as an Excelsior Agency at the CFA conference; followed by Advanced Meritorious Accreditation with Excellence at the CALEA conference. The dedication, commitment and service provided by Miriam reflect highly upon herself, the Coral Springs Police Department and the entire City of Coral Springs.

Officer of the Year – School Resource Officer Jeff Heinrich The past year has been a very busy one at Coral Springs High School for School Resource Officer Heinrich, a 20-year veteran of the Coral Springs Police Department. During the school year there were numerous disturbances which occurred on campus, as well as off campus. Some involved weapons and threats made against students and staff. Most notably was on October 10th when Officer Heinrich was notified of an armed student seen near the patio area of the school. With 1,500 students in the area at the time, Officer Heinrich quickly identified a former student and while patting him down, discovered a 9mm, fully-loaded handgun. Concerned there was an additional armed person on campus, he immediately placed the school on lockdown, established a perimeter and located the second person of

54

APRIL 2017

interest (who turned out not to be armed). Later that same night, a social media post indicated that a person was coming to the school with “guns blazing” because of the arrest made earlier in the day. Officer Heinrich was able to identify the poster and he was subsequently charged with making the threat. Outside of serving at Coral Springs High School, Officer Heinrich is also the Head Advisor for the Coral Springs Police Explorer Program. The program requires biweekly meetings, trainings and planning for local events and upcoming competitions. This type of mentoring for future law enforcement professionals is valued in our community and Officer Heinrich plays an instrumental role in ensuring its success. We are proud of Officer Jeff Heinrich and his accomplishments.

Supervisor of the Year – Lieutenant Amy Allen Lt. Amy Allen was nominated as Supervisor of the Year by her subordinates for her leadership, enthusiasm, devotion to duty and quality of service. As a mentor, Lt. Allen’s ultimate goal is to ensure officers are safe, productive and provide the highest level of service to the residents of Coral Springs. As the Crisis Intervention Team (CIT) Coordinator for the department, Lt. Allen personally reviews each mental health evaluation (Baker Act) performed and was asked to develop a lesson plan for officers dealing with persons suffering from mental illness. As the lead instructor for the class, Lt. Allen covered in length suicide prevention and other important topics that affect those who work in the public safety field. As the department transitioned to a new records management system, Lt. Allen volunteered to review all CIT cases from the past three years to determine the most up-to-date information. This provided a direct cost savings to the department, rather than hiring an outside vendor. In addition to CIT Coordinator, Lt. Allen is responsible for the Homeless Outreach Program. Last year she arranged to have survival packets made for the population to include important toiletry items. Lt. Allen’s leadership, guidance and mentor-ship are the many reasons she was selected as Supervisor of the Year.

W FAMILY FEATURES

armer weather is often welcome for a variety of reasons, but there’s something nearly irresistible about enjoying a meal outdoors. Whether you plan to gather on the patio or pack a picnic for the park, dining al fresco is an easy way to turn a meal into a full-fledged event. Begin your meal with chicken sandwiches crafted on the grill and a seasonal pasta salad on the side then finish it with a glass of white wine and a dessert made for al fresco entertaining – cheesecake topped with fresh berries and mint. For more al fresco recipes and entertaining tips, visit Culinary.net. Pair Like a Pro

When it comes to pairing wine with food, even experts agree that desserts can pose a challenge. A wide variety of flavor combinations can make it hard to find the perfect selection to serve with your sweet treat. While there’s no exact science to wine pairing, these simple tips can help you make your selection. Sweet Cheesecake A good rule: the lighter the dessert, the lighter the wine. Avoid heavy reds for a sweeter dessert and instead pair with a crisp white like Chardonnay, such as Joseph Carr from Sonoma, California. Citrusy Lemon Meringue Pie Lemon flavors can sometimes be polarizing, but complementing this dessert with an equally citrusy wine can work wonders. Try pairing with a food-friendly pinot grigio or a sauvignon blanc. Rich Chocolate Cake Red wine with chocolate seems like a no-brainer, but not all red wines are created equal. For a richer delicacy like this devil’s food cake, try something like Villa Pozzi Nero D’avola, a more fruit-forward, easy-drinking red varietal. For more tips and wine selections, visit winefix.com.

New York-Style Honey Cheesecake Recipe courtesy of the National Honey Board 2 cups graham cracker crumbs 1/2 cup butter or margarine, melted 4 packages (8 ounces each) cream cheese 3/4 cup honey 1/4 cup flour 5 eggs 1/3 cup heavy cream 1 tablespoon lemon zest, grated 1 teaspoon vanilla

fresh berries, for garnish fresh mint, for garnish To make crust: In small bowl, stir together graham cracker crumbs and butter until well blended. Press mixture evenly onto bottom and sides of greased 9-inch springform pan; set aside. Heat oven to 350 F. To make filling: In electric mixer bowl, combine cream cheese, honey and flour. Beat until smooth. Add eggs one at a time, beating well after each. Beat in cream, lemon zest and vanilla.

Go for Grilled Chicken

Few things go better with warm weather than firing up the grill and enjoying a meal in the fresh air. These chicken sandwiches, which are topped with Brie, pesto, fresh tomato and arugula on sourdough bread and toasted on the grill, are just the excuse you need to get outside and enjoy the weather with family and friends. Recipe courtesy of the National Chicken Council Servings: 4 1/2 cup olive oil, divided 2 tablespoons lemon juice 1 clove garlic, minced 1/2 teaspoon kosher salt 1/2 teaspoon freshly ground pepper 1 pound thin-cut chicken cutlets 1/4 cup basil pesto, divided 1 large tomato 8 slices crusty sourdough bread

To conTAcT cITy news, cALL Lucy (edIToR) AT 954-255-5226

Pour cream cheese mixture over crust; bake 15 minutes. Lower oven temperature to 200 F and bake 1 hour and 30 minutes longer, or until center no longer looks wet or shiny. With oven off and door ajar, let cheesecake cool 1 hour in oven. Remove cheesecake to rack to cool completely. Cover and refrigerate cheesecake at least 4 hours before serving. Garnish with fruit and fresh mint. Pair with chardonnay like Joseph Carr.

4 ounces Brie, thinly sliced 1 cup packed baby arugula Heat grill to high. Combine 1/4 cup olive oil, lemon juice, garlic, salt and pepper; pour into plastic zipper bag. Add chicken, seal and marinate at least 30 minutes. Grill chicken 2-3 minutes, turn and grill another 2-3 minutes, or until chicken registers internal temperature of 160 F. Remove and reserve. Spread each piece of bread with 1/2 tablespoon pesto. Slice tomato into eight slices. Place chicken on four bread slices. Top with Brie slices, arugula and two tomato slices. Top with remaining bread slices, pesto side toward tomato. Brush outside of each sandwich with about 1/2 tablespoon of remaining olive oil. Place on grill, reduce heat to medium and grill 2-3 minutes per side, or until bread is nicely toasted and cheese is melted. Remove from heat, cut each sandwich in half and serve.

Navigating Educational Success: The Compass Innovative Program By: Brooke BITTon

W

e are living in an ever-changing society, where innovative thinking is not just for men and women in college and the workplace. In fact, some schools are starting such programs at the elementary school level. One such school is right here in our own backyard. Parkside Elementary School houses the Compass Program. Established in 2012, by Mrs. Randy Bitton and Mrs. Sheree Schulson, K/1 and 2/3 multiage teachers, The Compass Program (and innovative programs in general) offer a unique roadmap to a student’s future, and, according to Mrs. Bitton, “encourages students to make a positive impact in the world.” Per the Broward County Public School’s website for innovative programs, the goal of innovative programs “…is to empower all learners to achieve their highest potential through customized learning, creativity, collaboration, and the infusion of digital tools and resources.” Mrs. Schulson states, “they give students back the reins by allowing them to navigate their own educational path.” Through the Compass Innovative Program, “students participate in project-based learning, which involves applying knowledge and skills to real-world problems by working together, and creating an end result with which everyone agrees.” The Compass Program is comprised of six classes, from Kindergarten through 3rd grade. Mrs. Polacek, a Compass Kindergarten teacher, says that the program, “Builds life-long relationships and cooperative skills as early as kindergarten.” The Compass Program allows students of different grade levels to blend together through project-based learning activities. Mrs. Adams, a 1st grade Compass teacher, adds that this multiage learning approach, “Allows kids to come out of their shell by talking to other students, and looking at them as older role models.” Students in Mrs. Polacek and Mrs. Adams’ classes often team up with Mrs. Mozitis’ 3rd grade Compass students. This year, the classes are focusing on U.S. symbols, and are going to create a new American symbol. Most Compass teachers agree that their project-based learning activities require much long range planning. “With Compass, we plan with the end goal in mind,” says Mrs. McCullough, a 2nd grade Compass teacher. “Students are more in tune with the world around them.” This year, Mrs. McCullough’s class, went to the beach and planted sea oats. The class worked with HandsOn Broward to plant the sea oats, in an effort to prevent beach erosion. “Community partners confirm the learning process for the students,” she says.

to run like a well-oiled machine. Mrs. Bitton and Mrs. Schulson have been awarded various grants that have assisted in the implementation of project-based learning activities. They also receive a generous amount of parent and community support, which has evolved into meaningful and long-term relationships. Sonia Gallagher, a Compass parent, says the program is “incredible”. “We appreciate Mrs. Bitton’s and Mrs. Schulson’s dedication to strengthening the students’ desire to learn and to be kind to the world around them,” she states. The Compass Program has continued success through the backing of its administration. “The confidence that the principal (Mrs. Laneia Hall) has in the program enables us to provide a curriculum that includes state and local standards in a creative environment,” says Bitton and Schulson. Mrs. Hall believes that the Compass Program provides an alternative style to learning, and offers a more hands-on learning experience. “It allows choice for parents and students,” she says. “By allowing these choices, students have more ownership of their learning and parents see the many advantages of the public school setting.” Mrs. Bitton and Mrs. Schulson constantly keep their students engaged, whether it’s through the students’ construction of an interactive bee hive, providing an opportunity for students to become “doctors” and devise a plan for renewed health based upon a given patient diagnosis, giving them the task of recreating prehistoric Coral Springs (with the support from the Coral Springs History Museum’s historian, Wendy Wangberg), and hosting their own version of Chopped, which included a food competition between families, and a food truck building contest to promote healthy eating. In addition, the two classes redesigned the “Tour the States” video, which was an in-depth study of the 50 states (visit https://youtu.be/dR5IZcDaA2E to view the video). Just recently, Mrs. Bitton and Mrs. Schulson’s students studied simple machines, and were required to put their skills to the test by building working arcade games out of recycled materials and three simple machines. This year, Mrs. Bitton and Mrs. Schulson are focusing on everything “Awesome”. One would agree that, since its inception in 2012, the Compass Program has always been “Awesome”. If you feel that The Compass Innovative Program is the right fit for your child, contact Parkside Elementary School to arrange a tour. The Compass Program and other innovative programs provides a new direction for students and their families to ensure a successful future.

Innovative programs receive no district funding; nevertheless, Parkside’s Compass Program continues

e’re are always looking to better serve our residents and I am very excited to announce that we launched PulsePoint in Coral Springs. This free app notifies anyone who is CPR certified of a local cardiac arrest, in either Coral Springs or Parkland. Seconds are crucial in these emergencies and, by working together with the Coral Springs Fire Department, we can help save lives. If you are CPR certified, I encourage you to download this free app. On a lighter note, summer is almost here. If you haven’t registered for Kamp Kool yet, now is the time. Registration opened late March. All our summer camps and activities are listed on our Summer Fun Guide, which is available at our City facilities or online at www. CoralSprings.org/summerfun.
