March to the Beat of Your Own Drum
A
new month is here again and it is filled with many much anticipated events and activities in our local communities. We have highlighted some of them in this issue, including Relay for Life of Parkland (page 12) and GardenFest (page 18) which takes place during the Coral Springs Festival of the Arts. Other great events include the Half-Marathon & 5K Race for Women’s Wellness benefitting the Lisa Boccard Breast Cancer Fund, which will take place on March 29th and the Our Town America festival, which begins March 7th (see the calendar on page 8 for more details). From the comfort of our couches we watched with excitement as the 2014 Winter Olympics unfolded on the slopes of Sochi. I admire these world class athletes for their competitive spirit, athleticism and abilities, and what is likely the most rigorous years of training before competing on the world stage. The spectacular showmanship of the snowboarders, skiers, and skaters generated a lot of “warmth” to contrast the scenery of snowcapped mountains and served as a reminder of why we love living in sunny south Florida. Our family and friends up north, and as far south as Georgia, have been blasted with several brutal winter storms recently (shout out to my kin in the peachtree state, the Zion family - stay warm!) We have had weeks of what I call “Chamber of Commerce” weather. So embrace this sunny weather and get out there and do great things in our communities! There’s never been a better time to find something you love to do and “march” to the beat of your own drum!

Students Recognized by National YoungArts Foundation
T
wo talented local students have been named YoungArts Merit Winners by the National YoungArts Foundation.
Rebecca Tutunick and Connor Yockus, both of Coral Springs, were recognized by the organization for their outstanding work and accomplishments. Rebecca, a senior at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School was a merit winner in Classical Music, flute; and Connor, a senior at North Broward Preparatory School was selected as finalist in Dance/Tap and merit winner for Choreography. About 11,000 students, ages 15-18 (or grades 10-12), applied in ten disciplines across the literary, performing, visual and design arts fields, of them, 687 winners were selected. Rebecca and Connor were among five artists honored in Broward County. “Every year I look forward to reviewing our applications because each one is so inspiring,” stated Paul T. Lehr, President & CEO of the National YoungArts Foundation. “I congratulate all 687 Winners who are incredibly talented and are who we consider to be the most promising young artists in America today.”
Finalist, Honorable Mention and Merit–and are selected through a blind adjudication process. Winners are eligible to participate in the Emmy-nominated HBO series YoungArts MasterClass, which chronicles the work of renowned artists sharing their art and life experiences with YoungArts winners; and have the opportunity to participate in YoungArts’ regional programs in cities throughout the country, including Miami, which allows participants will take intense master classes and workshops with internationally renowned artists and have the opportunity to present their work to the public.

Connor said he was “ecstatic” to learn that he was a YoungArts winner. He began dancing at the age of eight, falling in love with the art form after a summer intensive at his local dance studio in Coral Springs. He has continued training in all styles of dance, dancing competitively and traveling across the United States for master classes and opportunities to work with renowned choreographers.
The National YoungArts Foundation (formerly known as the National Foundation for Advancement in the Arts) was established to identify and nurture the next generation of artists in 2 the literary, performing, visual and design arts, and to contribute to the cultural vitality of the nation by supporting the artistic development of talented young artists. creating the music. It’s engaging and fulfilling. Not only can you dance to the music, but you can create it.”
Among a long list of affiliations and achievements, Rebecca is a member of the school’s Eagle Regiment Marching Band, founder and president of Stoneman Douglas’ chapter of the Tri-M Music Honor Society and has performed in the New World Symphony and University of Miami Honor Band.
In addition to being an academic scholar at school, Connor dedicates time to raise awareness for organizations such as F.O.R.C.E., Beaux Arts, and Equality Florida. “He is a very driven person,” said Connor’s mom Kristin.
Rebecca’s mom Vickie said her daughter fell in love with music before she could even walk, requesting piano lessons at four years old. “While other kids were listening to pop music on the radio, Becca was enchanted with orchestral music,” Vickie stated. It wasn’t until 6th grade that Rebecca picked up the flute, or the flute chose Becca, her mom would say. The instant she started playing, she knew it was the instrument for her.
MERIT WINNERS Rebecca Tutunick, merit winner in Classical Music, flute (photo 1) and Connor Yockus, finalist in Dance/Tap and merit winner for Choreography (photo 2) are two of the 687 winners selected by the National YoungArts Foundation. About 11,000 students applied across the literary, performing, visual and design art fields. Photos submitted
“It fit me well,” said Rebecca who plans to major in music performance in college with a possible double major in music education. Her involvement in music, she said, has been beneficial in a lot of ways. “It involves both hemispheres of the brain, so it makes you have patience, organization and time management skills.” YoungArts winners are designated into three categories–

“What I really love about YoungArts is that it encourages collaboration and appreciation of all the arts. It’s nice to meet other people who are just as passionate about art, just in different ways,” said Connor, who plans to pursue dance in college. Although Connor is the only dancer in his family, there are musicians. “That’s where I get my musicality,” Connor said. “I come from a family of musicians, in tap it’s me

Get Ready for Relay for Life of Parkland
O
ver the past eight years, the Relay for Life of Parkland has raised more than $820,000 for the American Cancer Society. This year the Parkland Relay hopes to reach the 1 million dollar mark. Involvement in the Relay, said event chair, Michele Liberti, “is an open door for everyone in the community. It’s never too late. You could form a team and raise $100. $100 is just as important as $10,000.” Relay for Life is an overnight community fundraising walk where teams of people camp out around a track as members of each team take turns walking around the track throughout the night. As the sun sets, participants begin the journey, pushing through fatigue and pain to continue walking until morning. “It’s a symbolization of what a cancer patient will go through. First the darkness… and then the realization that you can go on, and then seeing the light of day,” said Liberti. This year’s Relay starts at 6 p.m. March 14 at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School with an opening ceremony to honor cancer survivors. Organizers would like to have all cancer survivors in Parkland present and honored. Survivors and caregivers will enjoy a

Marisa’s Way Project - Preventing Wrong Way Driving
T
he organization Marisa’s Way has been formed to honor Marisa Catronio and Kaitlyn Ferrante, two Marjory Stoneman Douglas graduates who died after being hit by a wrong-way driver on the Sawgrass Expressway, and to raise awareness and institute changes in hopes of saving the lives of others. The two best friends, both 21, were traveling on the Sawgrass Expressway in the early hours of November 17 when they were involved in the collision. Catronio died instantly. Ferrante died four days later. Family members, friends and community members are rallying together to support the organization which is designed to help educate motorists of potential dangers and to create awareness towards the prevention of wrong-way crashes on highways and interstates. “The saddest part is that these girls were coming home from a casual night out and were only a quarter of a mile from home. If those problematic entrances on Sawgrass had better alert systems, there is a chance that Marisa and Kaitlyn would still be with us today,” said Rhonda Culligan, media liaison for Marisa’s Way.
Prevention of Wrong Way Drivers
The ultimate goal is to have a bill introduced through the Florida Legislature that will focus on creating more entrance ramp awareness, along with physical devices to alert wrong way drivers. The Marisa’s Way Project has already begun raising funds to support the effort which advocates for the installation of LED blinking “wrong way” signs to be installed at entrance ramps of the most problematic places. The cost is about $1,700 per sign. Advocates plan to start at the local level then move to state level by creating awareness and pushing for installation of the deterrents. A pilot program using similar devices has already been instituted in Miami and West Palm Beach. The goal, said Culligan, is to have every area of the Sawgrass Expressway covered. “In less than 3 months, since the deaths of Marisa and Kaitlyn, there have been a number of other motorists killed in wrong way crashes in Florida alone,” said Culligan. “The time has come to unite together in this fight to work towards saving lives. Something is broken with our current system!” Other states including Texas, have already implemented LED blinking wrong way signs, which reduced wrong way drivers by 30% in 2013. The company Tapco, has provided Marisa’s Way with a sample sign, which organizers plan to

The program will focus on proper warm up, stretching, form, breathing, pacing, and cool down. This workout will be about 50 minutes long followed by a 15 min snack and interactive nutrition discussion. Each ‘runner’ will be placed in a group with others of similar age and ability. The groups are coached by an experienced adult runner from the NWBRRC along with assistant ‘coaches’ from from Stoneman Douglas and Taravella High schools’ track and cross country teams. See What’s Blooming at Gardenfest
H
ow does your garden grow? If you aren’t sure, or have questions, the folks at Gardenfest Coral Springs will inform and assist you in selecting the perfect products for a successful springtime planting.
1
“It’s that time of year when people become interested in plants and it’s still cool enough to walk around and make selections. It’s nice,” said Garden Club member Nancy Klahr. Gardenfest, presented by The Garden Club of Coral Springs, will take place March 15-16 at the Coral Springs Festival of the Arts at The Walk, just south of the fountain. Gardenfest will include a chance to meet and speak with a variety of master gardeners, wildlife habitat stewards, nursery owners and growers and garden-related vendors. Topics of discussion and items for sale will range from palms, orchids, bromeliads and tropical trees to vegetables, herbs, butterfly plants and flowers. “There will be flowering trees and fruit trees…things you normally would not find in stores,” said Garden Club president Marcy DiMare. “There is such a variety. I think people will have an enjoyable time.” The Garden Club is a non-profit organization that is educational, horticultural, environmental and community involved. The Club is directed by a Board of Directors comprised of volunteers elected by and from the membership. Members are diverse ranging from gardeners, teachers and homemakers to lawyers, business owners and community residents, but all share a common bond and love of gardening. Gardenfest will be a family affair for all ages. It’s never too early to get the kids involved. Little ones love digging in the dirt and watching the fruits of their labor rise from the soil. Children can help shop for the greens that they would like to see grow, and there will also be a gardening activity geared towards kids at the event. Saturday will feature the Battle of the Big Tomatoes Contest. If your niche is tomato growing, bring your prize tomatoes to the festival for a chance to win a gift card. Prizes will be awarded to the biggest and most unusual. “There are so many varieties and some of them are coming back into fashion,” said DiMare, who began the Garden Club of Coral Springs in 1999. Tomatoes are simple to grow, and with no vegetable garden required, they are a great choice for those with or without a backyard, she added. “Many people grow them on their patios,” DiMare said. “And we have a good climate for it.”
3
But you don’t have to wait for your own crops to bloom in order to taste some seasonal homegrown goods. An on-site Farmer’s Market will tout locally grown Florida produce with a wide variety of fresh choices.
2

Now in its seventh year, the plant and garden show attracts thousands of visitors each year. Proceeds from Gardenfest will benefit the Garden Club’s Environmental Scholarship Fund. The fund provides annual scholarships to students majoring in environmental and horticultural sciences at a Florida college or university. Qualified graduates are each awarded with a $500 scholarship.

From Studio to Stage - Expert Instruction at Stella’s Dancers’ Studio
I
t’s all about the dancer at Stella’s Dancers’ Studio. Whether dancing for fitness and fun, or dreaming of being on stage, the trained dance instructors at Stella’s Dancers’ Studio teach every level of dancer, from amateur to adept, and from toddler to teenager, in a variety of dance disciplines.
high school or become a dance major in college.
Owner Stella Palumbo opened her first location in Cooper City in 1984. Last July, she opened the doors of her second studio, in the heart of Coral Springs, bringing with her a former student turned instructor, Danielle Moore.
Students start preparing to be on stage right away as the classes have an open window policy. Parents who wait for them can see right past the glass full-length windows into the class to see how their children are being taught. It also helps the parents feel more at-ease. Even the littlest dancers prepare for months for the big recital, which includes makeup, costume and DVD (included in recital fee). Held at Broward College, with full lighting, choreography and props, the recital is different than most expect.
“It is nice to have a range of classes. If the kids just want to be a recreational dancer, we have that; if they want to pursue [something more], we can do that, and everything in between,” says Palumbo.
Palumbo was trained by Dance Educators of America and is a member of the Professional Dance Teachers Association and Florida Dance Masters. Since opening her first studio 30 years ago, thousands of students have learned more than how to plié and jeté. The emphasis at Stella’s Dancers’ Studio is to develop students physically, mentally and emotionally and enhance a dancer’s self-esteem and selfconfidence.
Palumbo says, “That is the biggest response I get – parents say, ‘We were not expecting that; we were thinking it was a little dance recital’ - they weren’t expecting a performance. We had 1800 people in the audience last year. It always gets a standing ovation.”
Moore has benefited from those skills and now passes the techniques on to her students as she teaches Jazz, Ballet, Lyrical, Contemporary and Hip Hop. They plan on bringing in acrobatics soon. As the artistic designer of the studio, Moore loves teaching kids of all levels. “I have always had a passion for dance,” she says. “I have been training since I was 3. At 16, I became professional. I did jobs around Miami and, at 18, I went to the cruise ship life. I continued dancing as a backup dancer and choreographed a show at the MGM Grand in Vegas. I want to teach the kids self-discipline, confidence. It’s not just learning the steps. It is being self-aware with their bodies and opening up.” She keeps the little ones engaged by having a princess of the month with a new dance and coloring sheet. The leader of the day even gets to wear a tiara. On Fridays, they have private lessons for those who are part of the award-winning dance company, which has 90 students and is currently based out of the Cooper City location and will be available in Coral Springs soon. They compete locally, regionally and in nationals,

which this year is held in Orlando. The average competitive dancer dances at least 15 hours a week, including three hours of ballet (the foundation for dance), and has to audition. Company members are encouraged to take dance workshops from other trainers to expand their knowledge and are sometimes invited to travel with other companies. This is also an excellent training ground for those who want to attend a performance
The students also experienced a unique treat – performing with the Rockettes at the Kravitz Center in West Palm Beach. Palumbo explains, “The person who does the music program invited schools in the area to do an opening number. It was an amazing experience for the kids working with dance captain of the Rockettes. Several of our teachers had worked with the Rockettes and he knew them. The kids were dressed like them and learned the Rockettes’ dance. There were a lot of elderly people taking pictures with the kids.” The company also performs for charities like Relay For Life, a benefit for stroke victims, and at nursing homes. Stella’s Dancers’ Studio is located at 10442 W. Atlantic Blvd. To register for classes and find out more information, call the studio at 954-227-7479. Family Matters
I’m Listening Dear Debbie and Karen, I am a 40 year old woman. My husband and I met and married (quickly) when I got pregnant at 19. We have both devoted our lives to raising our 3 beautiful daughters and building a solid life together. The problem is, now that our youngest is in high school, I feel like our job is done. There are no more soccer games to attend, school functions to be involved with, and since she has started driving, no more chauffeuring or carpooling is needed. My husband and I are alone a lot more now, and it seems very lonely to me. I never really had a chance to have a single life, like my daughters are experiencing now, and I find myself fantasizing about what it would be like to have had that. My husband is definitely sensing something is wrong and so far I have been silent about my feelings, avoiding any conversation that might lead to that discussion. I know he loves me and I don’t want to hurt him. I think I love him still but I can’t figure out what the daydreaming is all about and it scares me! I would love to hear any thoughts that you have about this…! Dear JL,

So, you have spent half of your life focused on child rearing activities and from your letter it sounds like you enjoyed it. You also mentioned that you married young and quickly and feel like perhaps you missed out on the life your daughters are living now. That makes perfectly good sense now that you have the time to “breathe” and gain some perspective. Since there is no time machine, the question we would like to ask is how do you, at 40, choose a life that fits for you now? Perhaps you want more out of your romantic life, perhaps you can consider what else this new chapter of your life can offer? Perhaps you should invite more daydreaming and see how your husband might be included and see how that feels. Your fear that something is wrong is valid, but perhaps what is wrong is that you both are without direction now and need to reinvent yourselves for new adventures in your life. The unknown creates fear for many people. We suggest you confront the fear by discussing your thoughts with your husband. When one partner retreats it often creates fear for the other so by bringing him into the problem you may together begin to find a solution. If you find that you are still feeling lost please consider making an appointment and we can help you set your compass for the future. Best, Karen and Debbie

In the simplest terms, some muscles are designed to move and some to stabilize. Mobilizer muscles are what we refer to as the “glory” muscles; biceps, pectorals, quadriceps - the muscles we work out in the gym to make bigger. This type of muscle tends to be long, crossover at least one joint and have large range of motion. Stabilizer muscles have a completely different function. They tend to be shorter muscles that don’t move very much and are designed to hold you in proper position when at rest and when moving. These muscles are your core muscle, rotator cuff, the piriformis (gluts) and the oblique muscles of your abdomen.
Many athletes can actually have weak stabilizer muscles and this can lead to injury. How? While the mobilizer muscles are moving your body around at high rates of speed the stabilizer, or core, muscles, hold the joints in proper position to react to the forces of the activity. While the mobilizer muscles can stabilize you to some degree, they frequently fail at this activity resulting in injury to those weak stabilizer muscles. A large percentage of orthopedic practice is treating stabilizer or core muscle injury which can become chronic and debilitating.

Turning Back the Clock with Fillers to Rejuvenate the Face As we age the volume of our face diminishes, leading to the sinking of the face and sagging of the skin. The sagging is noted by emptiness to the cheeks, nasolabial folds and increased heaviness of jowls and neck. As a board certified plastic surgeon and Fillers and Injectables specialist I am able to recommend the right filler for the right area and what level of skin and under skin will these fillers will be placed. NON SURGICAL SOLUTIONS TO AGING FACE One of the available solutions are fillers that help to restore the three dimensional appearance of the face that is suffering during aging. These fillers help to restore the triangular shape of the face rather than the rectangular look that occurs with aging. FDA approved studies have proven the effectiveness of these fillers in improving the deepening folds and loss of volume in other parts of face. TYPES OF FILLERS 1.
2 INCHES OFF
Hyaluronic Acid (HA) - Hyaluronic acid is a major material building up the content of the skin. Being common to humans and other species, one does not to have a test prior to its use. It is very convenient to use in many parts of the face, including the lips. Restylane became the first FDA approved HA filler in the USA, lasts about 1 year. Perlane is another HA, similar concentration but made slightly thicker with larger molecules, lasts about a year and a half. Juvederm is yet another HA approved by FDA in 2006, and is made for moderate wrinkles and is especially useful to fill empty cheeks, lips, nasolabial lines and pre-jowls areas. Belotero is yet a thinner HA filler, for delicate areas like lips and tear trough areas. Voluma is the latest approved HA filler and was made to last up to two years, especially good for empty cheek areas.
2.
OR NEXT SESSION FREE
Sculptra - It is made of Poly Lactic acid, approved in 2004 for facial wasting or emptiness and is injected in several sessions. It is a volumizer, not just a filler, as it builds up new collagen fibers that were reduced in numbers because of aging. It is a good filler that can be used to rejuvenate most of the aging face.
3.
Radiesse - Is made of Calcium Hydroxyapetite spheres suspended in a special gel. The FDA approved it in 2006. It is a commonly used filler for empty areas like temples, cheeks and nasolabial folds and lasts about a year and a half.
4.
Artefill - Is the only FDA approved semi permanent filler. It is made of 80% pure collagen and 20% PMMA (poly methyl metacrylate) - tiny microsphere beads that last and supports the aging face for so many years. Its long life is very useful support for long lasting emptiness and deep wrinkles such as cheeks and under eyes areas (tear troughs). These injections have been used for many years in Europe and Canada. The current materials are made in the USA. Typically may need about two treatment sessions and provides a lasting correction to the aging face.

BY DR. DAVID YUDELL
Teenagers at Risk O ur teenage children face a great deal of pressure on a daily basis. This article is geared for those of us who have children who become overwhelmed by the stress. My intention is to offer some direction to alleviate the sadness and difficulties that can lead our teens down the wrong path.
identify mood fluctuations within them. If you are the parent reading this article that does not currently have concerns (great place to be) a great suggestion would be to build upon or create a hobby with your child. This will allow for shared time, which is your opportunity to find out about their lives.
When a problem arises, there are excellent resources available to those that are in need of assistance. In addition to Psychologists such as myself, school professionals (guidance, administration) there are sources on the Internet that answer basic questions. The following are signs and symptoms of teen depression, as noted in the website helpguide.org. • Sadness or hopelessness • Restlessness and agitation • Irritability, anger, or hostility • Tearfulness or frequent crying • Withdrawal from friends and family • Loss of interest in activities • Changes in eating and sleeping habits • Feelings of worthlessness and guilt • Lack of enthusiasm and motivation • Fatigue or lack of energy • Difficulty concentrating • Thoughts of death or suicide
Step 3 - Watch for warning signs. My best advice would be to contact a professional at this point. We are trained to identify and alleviate depression as well as other emotional conditions. Do not just wait for it to go away on its own. And do not accept idle threats - always treat them seriously. When in doubt, you can call 211 - this free service available throughout the majority of the country can help you decide if you need emergency services or if you can take another route. Support groups are also a great idea in many situations.
So now that I have signs and symptoms you may ask, “What do I do next?” Step 1 - Keep an eye out for changes in your child. Is he/she distancing themselves from friends and family? Are they more angry and irritable than usual (hard to believe with teens, but yes it can intensify)? Step 2 - Engage your child in conversation. Find out what they are thinking and feeling. The more you understand about your child, the easier it will be to

Peppermint & Menthol Topical Applications of Natural Remedies
P
eppermint (Mentha Piperita or M. Piperita) has many medicinal purposes that date back to Ancient Greek and Roman civilizations. Although able to be used in many forms (oil, leaf, extract, etc.), the oil is the most versatile form of peppermint used. Peppermint topically applied is best known for its antimicrobial, antifungal, antioxidant, virucidal and analgesic effects.

Menthol is also naturally occurring derived from the M. Piperita as well. It also has anti-fungal properties, and in addition has topical anti-inflammatory properties. Menthol is commonly used as a topical treatment for diaper dermatitis and in a study of 84 neonates diagnosed with candidal diaper dermatitis at one hospital, the menthol treated group was found to have a shorter healing time versus the placebo group. In addition, there was a significant relief of redness and pustules observed in the menthol-treated group. Topical Menthol, in concentrations of 1-3%, has been very effective as a treatment for pruritus (itch) in the elderly. Also, the addition of menthol has been found to facilitate the penetration of other topically applied treatments. Menthol has been described as cooling, especially in elderly, itchy skin, however menthol has not been shown to lower the skin’s temperature and how this effect really works has not been fully understood.

As an antioxidant, peppermint oil is one of the strongest free radical scavengers out of the 6 most popular herbs - ahead of rosemary, lemon, grapefruit, frankincense and lavender. In one study, peppermint oil has been found to be virucidal against herpes Simplex Virus (the cause of mouth cold sores and genital herpes outbreaks). The investigators concluded that peppermint oil may be an appropriate topical treatment in the treatment of recurrent herpes outbreaks.

To sum up, peppermint and menthol, with pleasing flavors, aromas, and cooling properties, has been used in a variety of cosmeceuticals, personal hygiene products (like toothpaste and mouthwash), foods, and aromatherapy. The most popular topical indications include itch, irritation and inflammation. More medical applications of peppermint and menthol in dermatology is the subject of ongoing research.

New Juvéderm Voluma™ XC for the Face
T
he aging process results in prominent nasolabial folds, jowls, sagging facial skin, and flattening of cheekbone region. These changes occur as a result of a progressive loss of collagen and elastin of the skin and soft tissue volume in the cheeks. Now, for the first time, a new product from Allergan medical is available to help restore and rejuvenate the midface. Juvéderm Voluma™ XC helps enhance contour and create a more youthful profile for the face for up to 2 years. This hyaluronic acid filler is the first and only FDA-Approved filler for the midface. Voluma XC contains a modified hyaluronic acid (HA) derived from a naturally occurring complex sugar. A special cross-linking process in the synthesis of this product makes it last longer than its Allergan counterpart Juvéderm XC and the other available HA products: Restylane, Perlane, and Belotero.

After Achieve the soft-S curves of a youthful face, also known as the Ogee Curve, as seen on the official site for the makers of Juvéderm Voluma XC at http://www.juvederm.com/ professional/voluma/.
The typical youthful face has a high cheekbone and soft gentle curve from the cheekbone downward. This area of the midface follows the shape of a natural-looking ogee curve. As the face ages, there is a progressive flattening of the cheekbone and midface. This resultant loss of volume causes the skin to sag. Soft-tissue volume can be restored to the face by the nonsurgical injections of Juvéderm Voluma™ XC. This procedure involves subcutaneous injection of this filler with a small needle. The Voluma lifts the cheek and restores a more youthful curve to the cheek. The patient may experience mild swelling or bruising at the injection site, and results of a single treatment have lasted up to 2 years in 76% of patients studied. Juvéderm XC can be injected in the lips, nasolabial folds, and other areas of facial wrinkles where superficial injections are indicated. Juvéderm can last up to one year in these areas. The efficacy of Voluma XC injections in other areas of the face has not been assessed. HA fillers like Voluma XC and Juvéderm XC provide immediate results filling facial lines and wrinkles. Sculptra differs from Voluma XC in that the soft tissue enhancement that occurs results from an inflammatory reaction the product causes after it is injected. This reaction can occur over a period of days to months with results lasting up to 2 years. Unfortunately, these results depend on the degree of inflammation and vary from patient to patient. As a result, soft tissue enhancement can be unpredictable. In clinical studies performed with Voluma XC, patients perceived themselves to look 5 years younger 6 months after treatment, and 3 years younger 24 months after the treatment. The aging process is complex. Optimal rejuvenation requires a proper assessment of each patient’s facial anatomy, individual appearance goals, and discussion of the treatment options available, both surgical and nonsurgical. Juvéderm Voluma™ XC is another excellent option available in the array of products available to refresh, rejuvenate, and restore a more youthful appearance to the face. Dr. Messa is board certified by both the American Board of Plastic Surgery and the American Board of Surgery, an active member of the American Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, American Society of Plastic Surgeons, and a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons. Acupuncture Point Injection A
cupuncture Point Injection Therapy is a more recent advance in the scope of Chinese medicine and has been practiced in China for many years. Injection therapy is a natural and safe form of therapy that combines traditional acupoint theory and anatomy with injectable solutions. The injections are given using hypodermic procedures and are administered just under the skin or into the muscle, but never intravenously. Like Acupuncture, fine needles are inserted into acupuncture points or trigger points. Acupuncture point injection therapy involves the injection of small amounts of saline solutions such as homeopathic remedies, vitamins or Chinese herbs administered by qualified acupuncturists and approved by the FDA. The injection will stimulate the Acupuncture point for a much longer period of time, therefore enhancing the therapeutic effect. It is a very useful technique in hard-to-treat, or poorly responding conditions. The goal is that once the natural products are injected, your body’s own defense system is stimulated. This technique can be very effective in treating chronic pains that even cortisone shots do not help with. Injection therapy is often used to treat allergies, eczema, fibromyalgia, migraines, tennis elbow, heel pain (plantar fasciitis), low back pain, knee pain, shoulder pain and many other ailments. It is also effective in treating chronic auto-immune conditions, respiratory dysfunction and viral infections. Most patients are surprised how easily and quickly these injections are given compared with the injections given in conventional medicine. Point injections are also given to stimulate local blood circulation and to dissipate ongoing inflammatory processes. The injections can be very useful when treating sports injuries as some products are designed to relax muscles. We have had excellent results with homeopathic injections of Traumeel and Zeel for joint pain, arthritis, neck pain and lower back pain. Recent research indicates that Traumeel injections are as effective for pain as conventional treatments including narcotics, painkillers and anti- inflammatory medications. These substances also act as natural antibiotics and promote general health. Where the product is injected is as important as the product itself and sometimes the injections are given at more than one spot during each session. Please note that acupuncture injection therapy is not a substitute for acupuncture treatments. It is more effective when done in conjunction with an acupuncture treatment. The Acupuncture injection therapy does not suppress or mask the pain; it prompts the body to treat the cause of the pain via self healing mechanisms. The number of sessions needed is always based on the severity, duration and nature of present illness. Injections of Vitamin B12 is also a part of injection therapy and has many therapeutic uses such as; natural anti-inflammatory, eliminating knots in muscles, correcting anemia, increasing energy and increasing well being of the nervous system. At Five Element Wellness Center, we are dedicated to bringing our patients the finest form of medicine and expertise in restoring them to a healthy and pain-free lifestyle.

Solar Window Tinting can add to the comfort and protection of your car or home by eliminating the Infrared heat and Ultra-violet rays that come in through your windows. This can cause fabrics and carpets to fade in the home and cause damage to a vehicles interior, especially leather that can crack and age very quickly.
1
Founded in 1981 by Bobby Weiss, Lisa Weiss Robertson and Dennis Cupo, Tint World has 5 original area locations. “We tint everything – cars, boats, homes, offices and buildings of any size,” says Cupo. “We also [sell and install] radar detectors, alarm systems, satellite radios, HID’s, navigation and stereo systems. We are dealers for most of the top brands like Viper, Rockford, Pioneer and Kicker just to name a few.” As an exclusive 3M Authorized Dealer, Tint World has the most up to date technology available, such as computerized film cutting for cars, trucks and SUVs and the film is installed by manufacturer-trained tinting professionals. He explains, once a customer chooses the film type, the technician chooses the windows to be tinted from our state of the art film program and the plotting device cuts each piece of film to the exact size of the windows with micro edged borders and one piece rear windows, a standard practice at Tint World. Many tint shops still take a sharp razor knife and trace each pane on the outside of your vehicle. By using this practice it’s possible to cut the rubber trim or even scratch the glass of your “prized possession.” Carlos Saavedra, a Master Film Installer, has been part of the team of professionals at Tint World for over 10 years adds, “We take the film and lay it on the glass [using soap and water to allow movement] and remove any excess material. We then squeegee out the extra water. It is a very exacting process.” The average time to tint a vehicle varies but is usually about an hour. The focus is on the quality of the installation not the speed. Appointments are accepted during Tint World’s normal operating hours of 8:30 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., Monday through Saturday. Tint World also has a “Heat Wall,” which allows the customers to actually feel how the film performs against a heat source similar to the Sun. Using only 3M films, each tint comes with a lifetime guarantee which is valid nation wide, Cupo says. Tint World features 3M’s Crystalline film [for tinting]. It is virtually clear, but keeps out 97% of infrared heat as well as 99% of UVA and UVB rays. Endorsed by the American Cancer Society it is a must for any one with skin cancer. The SPF rating on this film is over 1,000! Available in homes as well, sold as the 3M’s Prestige line, these films have all other film manufactures playing “catch up” technology wise. Another Tint World feature is a computer at the front desk which can actually show each customer what the tint will look like on their vehicle! This

vehicle’s front end, that protects it from everything from stray rocks to bugs. It makes it easy to remove dirt and you can still put wax on the car. Even if you lease your vehicles, you are not restricted if you choose to add tint or paint protection film to your vehicles. In fact, because both items keep vehicles looking newer longer there is no extra removal charge to you when you return your lease.
2 virtual sneak peek called a “Tint Visualizer,” is just another advantage that Tint World has over the ordinary tint shop. Cupo says that “much of the work in our stores comes from fixing problems caused from buying cheaper dyed film at other tint shops. When you see cars where the tint has turned purple and is bubbling on the side and/ or rear window, in some cases the seams are coming apart because it was installed in pieces. No one would drive around with windows looking that way if they had a guarantee and if the shop that did the install was still in business. We offer a lifetime guarantee. If someone tinted a car, truck or SUV with us 15 years ago or more and the film is old, peeling or cracking, we will replace it for free.” “We stand behind our work,” says Lisa Weiss Robertson, manager of the Coral Springs location. In these tough economic times people are holding onto their cars longer so a lifetime guarantee from a long standing company like Tint World backed up by 3M has even more value. Holding on to cars longer also means keeping them clean, which is why Tint World has a complete detailing department. VERY HOT NOW is Paint Protection Film... for your
ALSO VERY HOT are Vehicle Wraps....If your vehicle has a worn-out paint job, you can get your car wrapped in a variety of “in style” colors and patterns such as; Metallic Blue or Carbon Fiber. These wraps can easily be removed or changed to a different color. In fact..you can change again and again, cheaper and with a better finish than repainting and it’s even popular on brand new vehicles! “Much of our success has to go to our staff of dedicated experts, certified technicians and Master Tint Professionals. Their hard work translates into happy, satisfied customers,” says Cupo. “We never send kids out to do a man’s job; it’s our men, in our trucks, with our insurance.” “The Tint World difference is our reliability and longevity,” he adds. “Thirty-two years (with same owners) in tinting, electronics, wraps or detailing – no one can match that. We will always do the best we can to make every customer happy and satisfied.”

It’s Their Business
BY RACHEL GALVIN
Find Out the Truth with Charlie’s Angels P.I. Services
W
hen you think of Charlie’s Angels, you probably think of the classic TV show or the recent movies. But Charlie’s Angels is a real company operated by mostly women private investigators (P.I.s) and they mean business.
“So many parents think they need to give their teenagers space. Maybe it was like that one day; it’s not like that today. It is much harder to grow up today than it ever was,” she says. The main goal in Charlie’s business is finding the truth, from issues with fidelity to finance. Every case is different and her employees utilize everything from computers to surveillance to working undercover. One of her biggest cases was a company who was being sued by a woman claiming they had a toxic substance in the air-conditioning ducts that was making it hard to breathe caused her to use an oxygen machine. Charlie staked her out for 2 ½ days and took over 3 ½ hours of footage showing the woman smoking, spraying aerosols, etc. – things she said she could not do. Her client won the case and saved about $18 million dollars.
Charlie’s Angels owner Charlie Henriquez gets calls from all over the world asking for her services, but she wasn’t always interested in being a P.I. “I grew up as a singer/recording artist. My father is a world- renown Jazz Singer/Musician. I have two boys that I live and die for,” says Charlie. “I found the travel was too much, the schedule not conducive. My friend owned a private investigation company in Central Florida. I said, ‘License me. I think I’d be good at this stuff.’ It was all retired C.I.A. and F.B.I. I was the only woman. I did a really good job. I surpassed all their records. We were graded on how much videotape we obtained and how many people we could locate. I ended up running his company. I became director of operations within a couple of years and eventually partner. Then, I went out on my own.”
“A lot of people come to me in a broken state. They are embarrassed and worried. The more they can tell me, the better I can do my job. We sign an agreement. I take a retainer and we discuss our game plan. I start out investigating and end up being a counselor, helping people deal with the truth. I had a client going through a divorce who found out her husband was a sex addict. She was a wreck. I watched her go through every emotion. She sent me a beautiful email saying how she couldn’t go through this without me. This is why I do this. I take each one of my clients to heart,” she says.
Seven years ago, she opened Charlie’s Angels, a full service private investigation firm, eventually moving back to South Florida where she grew up and building her clientele base worldwide.
She adds, “Everything is 100 percent confidential, otherwise no one would come forward. It is extremely serious. We are dealing with people’s lives.”
She finds that the business is not for everyone, only those who are detail oriented and able to put pieces of the puzzle together and make quick decisions.
Retired Miami Dade police sergeant Jim Julian knows the seriousness of the business. He has been working in investigation for over 30 years and, after retiring from the force, has enjoyed staying in the business through Charlie’s Angels.
She explains, “It is similar to singing. A singer can either get on stage and Rock It or can’t. It’s not something you can learn. Either you are a connect-the-dots person, wired that way, or not. I have always been able to think three steps ahead. I am extremely results-driven.”
“Investigation is not just what you see on TV. It is common sense, interviewing people, research. It is 90 percent mundane day to day business, 10 percent [doing surveillance] plain clothes or undercover. I am very selective who I work with. I do not have a lot of time to deal with someone who is not professional. Working with Charlie is always a pleasure, she is as sharp as they come.”
Charlie adds, “We specialize in divorce and child custody cases, also insurance fraud, worker’s comp. We also offer process service everywhere in the world. More recently, we added executive protection (bodyguard).” Her office manager, Claudia Le Grande, adds, “What I specialize in is finding people over the Internet. If I find no luck in our database, I go on to social media. What makes us unique is that we are women based [although there are some men].”

Charlie is passionate about teaching parents how to monitor their teenagers in an effort to protect them through software her company offers. “With teenage suicide, inappropriate relationships and bullying on the rise, we need to do more,” she says.

he statistic that is most surprising to many is that 50% of home purchases in the Coldwell Banker Heron Bay office during 2013 were cash transactions. A seller’s net proceeds do not change whether the buyer pays cash or goes for financing. With financing the transaction must jump more hurdles; the appraisal and the approval of the purchaser. While financing is still quite strict and even the best of applicants must provide extensive information on their deposit source, income, credit score, tax returns and give their first born….(just a joke), there have been some good changes in financing options in recent months. According to Greg Benedetto of Sunbelt Lending, aggressive financing still exists for both conventional and FHA loans. The banks are allowing up to 95% for conventional and 96.5% for FHA. The mortgage insurance premium kicks in over 80% loan to value. But it is a tax deductible expense and with interest rates low, worth the cost to leverage cash or financing where income supports the payments but cash on hand is limited. New programs have been added for Canadian borrowers which allow them to obtain very low interest rates on 2nd home purchases. That will mean more sales to the many Canadians that want to own second homes in South Florida. Interest rates remain low in spite of the FED’s plan to scale back their bond purchasing program. This is good news for buyers and good news for sellers who may no longer be under water or low on equity, now that we have bounced back from the bottom of the market with prices having risen 15 20% in the last 12 to 18 months in many areas. With the enormous amount of regulations in the lending industry it is more important than ever to use a lender you trust. Long distance lenders as well as many lenders on the internet may save a very few dollars but do not deliver the personal, hands on service that can make the stressful process of obtaining a mortgage much easier and successful in the end.

Nature’s Cure for Arthritis May Have Been Found in the Unlikeliest of Places…. Scientist’s discover hyaluronic acid, a natural joint lubrication compound, in the comb of roosters! Nature has provided the human race with medical break throughs throughout recorded history. One example occurred in 1796 when Edward Jenner developed a method to protect people from smallpox by exposing them to the cowpox virus. In his famous experiment, he rubs pus from the dairymaid’s cowpox pustule into scratches on the arm of his gardener’s 8 year old son, then he exposes him to smallpox six weeks later (which he does not develop). The process becomes known as vaccination from the Latin vacca for cow. Jenner is sometimes called the founding father of immunology. Now, although medicine has come a long way since the eighteenth century modern day scientists are still discovering the powers of nature in the unlikeliest places every day. One current example of this resides in the red crest of the rooster’s comb. You see, this anatomical feature of male chickens is primarily made of naturally occurring substance called hyaluronic acid. Hyaluronic acid is also present in humans, and is a primary ingredient in synovial fluid, the body’s natural joint lubrication. As we age, and under the stress of continued use, the body’s synovial fluid can become depleted, especially in the knees which are the body’s largest weight bearing joint. This can lead to a reduction in joint space resulting in loss of cartilage, swelling, and discomfort, as well as reduced strength and limited range of motion. This process results in a condition known as Osteoarthritis of the knee, sometimes referred to as “wear and tear arthritis”. Until recently, the primary treatments for Osteoarthritis of the knee were limited to physical therapy, knee replacement surgery, or simply learning to live with the pain and frustration of a mobility limited lifestyle. That of course until the rooster came along…. In 1996 scientists successfully extracted,
purified, and concentrated the hyaluronic acid found within the rooster’s comb into a product used for the treatment and relief of knee pain resulting from osteoarthritis known as Hyalgan. This product is now used as an alternative to surgery around the globe and has helped countless individuals regain their mobility and alleviate pain. Locally a group of forward thinking physicians have combined Hyalgan injections performed under visual guidance with unloading knee bracing and specialized physical therapy protocols to deliver highly successful clinical outcomes for their patients. This unique protocol is covered by most major insurance carriers including medicare.

It’s Their Business
By Rachel Galvin
The Amazing Bottle Dancers Add Tradition to Any Event Tradition... tradition... Every Jewish occasion should include a little tradition, right? Isn’t that what the song says? These days it seems that weddings, bar and bat mitzvahs, and the like, can stray away from tradition in their quest to seem new and modern. But adding that little touch of tradition may take that simcha from ordinary to extraordinary, an event no one will forget. Michael Pasternak was looking for something different when planning his wedding with his wife Ilisa. He came up with the idea of bottle dancers, like the ones in “Fiddler on the Roof.” The performance was such a hit that he decided to create a whole company around the idea. With a background in entertainment, this was a perfect fit. Now, 14 years later, he has dancers available nationwide, including Los Angeles, Chicago, Philadelphia, Washington, Baltimore, Las Vegas and cities in Florida and New York, and will soon be in San Francisco and Boston, providing this fun and festive service. His dancers have been seen on everything from “Regis & Kelly” to the Chabad Telethon. The secret to The Amazing Bottle Dancers’ success is their unique concept: They are essentially “party crashers.” Instead of being introduced, the first member of the troupe wanders in unannounced. Turns out, he’s got the wrong event! Everyone believes it, but as he starts to leave, he suddenly “recognizes” some family and guests. “Wait, is this Jacob’s Bar Mitzvah?!” Turning to the back of the room, he unexpectedly calls out for “Shmulie, Nachum and Moishe,” who might just be carrying the bar or bat mitzvah honoree in, up high in the air on their shoulders or on a throne, to the surprise and delight of all. The Amazing Bottle Dance follows, and then the program is capped off with a thrilling hora with the guests, right out of the “Old Country”. Not just for weddings and bar and bat mitzvahs, The Amazing Bottle Dancers are a hit at holiday events such as Purim and Chanukah. For fundraisers, birthdays, anniversaries and tribute dinners, the program also includes a hilarious “This Is Your Life.” At Mitzvahs, they work with any theme: Whether it’s the Beatles, Ballet or Baseball, the program fits to a tee, adding the “tradition” that might be missing from the festivities. Pasternak had a client with a Beatles theme that was worried the bottle dancers wouldn’t fit in. He asked the client, “When you get up to dance the hora, do you dance to Yellow Submarine? No… We are the traditional part. Then, go back to the theme.”
www.CoralSpringsCityNews.com
EXTREMELY ENTERTAINING The Amazing Bottle Dancers bring an element of surprise and a sense of tradition to Jewish events such as weddings, mitzvahs and more.
“We’re entertainment… not only for the kids, but the adults as well. You’ve got 50 (kids), 150 adults. What are you going to do for the grandparents, for example, (who don’t care about the 72” Play Station screen)? Let’s give them something. We take people on a roller coaster ride. That don’t know what’s next! It’s a fun element of surprise. It’s like a Jewish Cirque Du Soleil.” He adds, “We had brides and grooms who were both Italian. They loved it.” Dance is universal. We have also been completely embraced by the Chabad community. We were at an event and some Chabad rabbis were there and didn’t know we were coming. When they realized what was happening, they smiled and joined us. It doesn’t get any better than that. One asked if he could have a card, saying he wanted to join our dancers!”
Pasternak currently lives in Los Angeles, but lived in Hollywood, FL and attended Broward Community College and Florida Atlantic University. He comes from a long line of Rabbis and Chazzans, but he calls himself “a regular guy.” Passionate about his bottle dancers, he beams when talking about his many positive responses. Breena Alongi hired the Amazing Bottle Dancers for her daughter’s bat mitzvah and loved the response. She says, “The Alongi Family is floored. We hired not knowing really what to expect for our own affair, and we are just blown away. My guests cannot stop calling me! They want to know where I found [them] … They never saw anything like it!”

Health & Wellness
BY KENNETH N. WOLINER, M.D., A.B.F.M.
A case of Ulcerative Colitis “We are trying to avoid surgery.”
David’s wife Beth did most of the talking; looking at him, you could see why. He was as pale as a sheet. “Dr. Woliner, the last year has been horrible with Dave being hospitalized twice. The last time his hemoglobin got down to ...” “8.3. My gastroenterologist says my colitis is the worst he’s ever seen. He says I need surgery to remove the whole thing.” My colleague, Dr. Mark Hyman, calls Functional Medicine doctors such as myself, “resort doctors”, as we are often the “doctor of last resort.”1 It seems your case is no exception. Tell me more.” “Lots of mucous and blood. Dave can hardly leave the bathroom much less get out of the house to work.” “And mouth ulcers. I can’t eat, but that’s mostly due to the severe belly cramps. I’ve lost 25 pounds in the last 3 weeks.” I looked over his medication list. “Asacol, Prednisone, Prilosec, Pepcid, Zofran, Donnatal, Iron tablets, B12 ... They ever try you on a biologic drug such as Remicade?”2 “That was my GI doctor’s last hope, but I got “Serum Sickness” with fever.”3 “Beth interrupted, “Those TV commercials say all those side effects so quickly. You don’t think you’ll get them until you’ve already got them.” After I did my physical exam, I laid it out straight. “You’re sick enough that I want to admit you to the hospital today. Not for surgery, but for intensive nutritional therapy. However, there are no guarantees, and if I can’t turn things around, surgery is still an option.” “What do you have in mind?” “I’ll fax in admitting orders so you can bypass the ER. Don’t expect to eat anything, as food allergies are one cause of colitis.4 Fortunately, because I was a Nutrition major at Cornell, I learned how to prescribe TPN correctly. “ “TPN?” “Oh, that’s an abbreviation for feeding you by IV. You’re severely malnourished, and that is why you’re still anemic despite the iron and vitamins. Dr. Viteri taught me that patients such as you need up to 280 grams of protein per day!”5 “What else?” “I’ll run some tests for food allergies, as well as vitamin and essential fatty acid deficiencies.6 I am vice-chair of the Continuing Medical Education (CME) committee of the hospital, and we’ve done a pretty good job of educating the pharmacy of why patients need the right supplements. Probiotics, for example, you’ll need lots of them.”
“Food allergies are one cause of colitis.”
“We already tried that.” “No. I’m talking mega-doses. 900 billion live bacteria per day!7 We’re going to hit this hard.” David’s admission labs showed him severely anemic, with a Hemoglobin level of only 5.1. I had to transfuse 4 units of blood, but the combination of mainstream drugs (steroids and antibiotics) and nutritional therapy did bring David’s colitis under control.8 Still, it took close to 3 weeks before he was stable enough to be discharged. He was eating food again (minus the half-dozen foods he was allergic to), and was still on Asacol, but he avoided a colectomy (surgery) or a colostomy bag. Beth, who is now also a patient of mine, came to see me eight months after I first met David. “The good news is that he’s back at work and only rarely takes Prednisone when he feels a flare coming on. The only bad thing is that he has now put on the pounds, especially with the holidays. When you see him next, can you talk to him about that?” REFERENCES: 1. Hyman MA. Coral Springs & Parkland Named Tree City USA
B
oth the cit y of Coral Springs and the Cit y of Parkland have been named 2013 Tree Cit y USA communities by The Arbor Day Foundation in honor of their c ommitment to ef fective urban forest management. This marks the 29th year that Coral Springs has received this national recognition and the 21st year that the Parkland has been recognized. To become a Tree Cit y USA c ommunit y, a Cit y must have a tree board or depar tment, a tree c are ordinance, a c omprehensive communit y forestr y program, and an Arbor Day obser vance. “ Ever yone benef its when elected of f icials, volunteers and commit ted citizens in c ommunities like Coral Springs, make smar t investments in urban forests,” said John Rosenow, founder and chief executive of the Arbor Day Foundation. “ Trees bring shade to our homes and beaut y to our neighborhoods, along with numerous economic, social and environmental benef its.”
“ It ’s truly an honor to again receive this environmental recognition,” said Cit y Manager Car yn Gardner-Young. “ It ’s an award that spotlights a c ommitment by our Cit y Commission and residents to plant, maintain and protect trees so we c an pass on a lasting legacy of a fundamental natural resource to future Parkland generations.” Parkland is also the recipient of the Tree Cit y USA Grow th Award for the third straight year, demonstrating progress in its c ommunit y forestr y. The prestigious award rec ognizes environmental improvement and higher levels of tree c are in Tree Cit y USA c ommunities. The Tree Cit y USA program is sponsored by the Arbor Day Foundation in c ooperation with the National Association of State Foresters and the USDA Forest Ser vice. The Arbor Day Foundation is a nonprof it, environmental educ ational organization of nearly one million members, with a mission to inspire people to plant, nur ture and celebrate trees. Douglas DECA Designs Donuts for Dunkin’
M
ore than 30 high school marketing students were given a chance to design, test, promote and sell a new donut under Stoneman Douglas High School’s DECA program. Students created a name, slogan and promotional plan for their new concept to sell at the Dunkin’ Donuts locations at Heron Bay Publix Shopping Center (5930 Coral Ridge Drive) and Magnolia Plaza (9515 Westview Drive), in addition to on the school campus. All donuts went on sale at the two participating Dunkin’ Donuts and 20% of proceeds went back to the school. Teams were graded on sales, creativity of the product, promotion and teamwork. The program, now in its sixth year, has included innovative donut creations such as the “Funfetti Fusion” donut which consisted of a glazed, old-fashioned cake donut with white frosting and colored sprinkles, a “Nutella” donut, an old-fashioned cake donut with Nutella and heart-shaped sprinkles and a “Churro” donut. The winning teams were announced by Jacqueline Cosbert, General Manager of Dunkin’ Donuts franchise group Amerimax. Winners received a Dunkin’ Donuts gift card and career opportunities at a Dunkin’ Donuts in their area. The Cinnamon Challenge Donut won first place overall. Winners were as follows: 1st Place: Cinnamon Challenge - $1655; Cookies & Cream - $1502; 2nd Place: Cookie “Dough”nuts - $1386; Day Glownut- $1158; 3rd Place: Team USA - $979, Sweet & Salty - $852.

s I lay, squished to one side in my king bed that houses myself and my two dogs who collectively weigh more than I do, it should come as no surprise to me that I take up less than ¼ of the bed! If this wasn’t enough to disturb my sleeping, I also often wake up to at least one dog scratching, grunting, rubbing or rolling in the middle of the night. The inevitable “itchies” strike again!

One of the most common and frustrating problems that I deal with as a veterinarian, and as a dog owner, is the itchy dog. “Pruritis,” which is the medical term for itchiness, is frustrating for the dog, the owner, and the veterinarian. Furthermore, pruritis can have many causes, and often can become an expensive condition to diagnose and control, especially in the case of allergies. Diagnostic tests such as skin impressions, skin scrapings, skin cultures, fungal cultures, and allergy testing are often needed. Sometimes even all of these tests don’t elucidate the reason for the itch, and we get left treating a symptom.

So you might be thinking, what can be done to help my itchy dog? First, see your veterinarian. It is important that whoever brings Fido to the veterinarian knows the history - there are many questions that a veterinarian might ask that can help figure out the underlying cause of the itch. Second, for successful itch management it is important to see the same veterinarian, especially for the recurrent scenario. Third, it is important to follow the veterinarian’s treatment recommendations, and to monitor and report how the dog responds to those treatments. An itchy dog can sometimes be a complicated scenario and often takes teamwork on the part of the veterinarian and the client.
A Small Hospital Community With Big Hospital Standards
Luckily though, there has recently been a new medical development in the control of itch. Historically, steroids have been used to “break the itch cycle,” and often these have a quick onset and an almost miraculous effect at an affordable price that leaves owners wanting more. Alternatives to steroids are often slower to take effect, not very effective, or very expensive. Unfortunately, the steroids have many adverse effects, drug interactions, side effects, and are not safe for long term use. Recently, however, a new medication called Apoquel has been approved for the short term and long term control of itch in dogs over 1 year of age. This medication has an excellent safety profile and seems to work very quickly with a typically affordable price, like a steroid, but without all of the adverse side effects. This new medication is coming to a veterinarian near you! Since the company sold a three month supply of the new medication in three weeks, it went on backorder in February. If you have an itchy dog though, call your veterinarian to find out if this medication is available. Luckily, with this new, safe, effective and typically affordable medication the inevitable itchies no longer have to be the infinity itchies! There is hope to effective itch control now more than ever!

Community News RELAY, FROM PAGE 12 The ceremony will include a candlelit luminaria ceremony followed by a video tribute accompanied by the Stoneman Douglas chorus. The Parkland Relay has been in the top 25 Relays out of 365 in the state of Florida for five consecutive years because of its dedicated teams and grass-roots fundraising, Liberti said.
REMEMBERING LOVED ONES A candlelit luminaria ceremony honors the memories of those who lost their battle with cancer.
Relay participants have already raised funds through a 5K, 10K, 1 Mile race organized by the City of Parkland, and completed a Project Teddy Bear fundraiser where they sold 600 teddy bears. The teddy bears were given to children at Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital and the funds benefitted Relay for Life. Donations are also being made by businesses, community members and in-kind sponsorships. “It’s challenging for the small town we are,” Liberti said. “Most of our donations average $100 or less. We are really grassroots.” Some upcoming Relay fundraising events where the community can show their support include a lunch and fashion show at Mercedes Benz on March 7, a Casino Night on March 8 and a Heat game on April 11. The Real Housewives of Parkland Ladies Who Lunch event is scheduled for 11 a.m. Friday, March 7. True to Housewives style, the luncheon will include a champagne reception as well as a fashion show by MONA’s and Island Water Sports and raffle prizes. The cost is $75 and reservations can be made through the event’s website. At the April 11 Miami Heat vs. Indiana Pacers game, sports fans can have a portion of their proceeds benefit the American Cancer Society by purchasing tickets in advance through Jared Borlack at jborlack@heat.com. Deadline to purchase is March 28. As details are finalized for the Casino Night, information will be updated on the Relay’s website. Liberti said she got involved with the Relay for Life of Parkland by chance about five years ago. “I didn’t know what Relay was. I was blown away by it. You hear people’s stories and their struggles. I have met hundreds of people, that I now call my friends.” The event is about fundraising, but a large portion of the Relay is dedicated to honoring survivors and raising awareness, Liberti added. Cancer, said Liberti, is “out there running rampant. I don’t believe you sit back and do nothing. You make a difference.”

The Teen Political Forum will be held on Thursday, March 6 from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at the Coral Springs Center for the Arts, 2855 Coral Springs Drive. High school students, who live in Coral Springs or attend any of our local Coral Springs high schools, are invited to attend this educational and leadership-building event.
This One Act show was awarded a Superior Rating at the District Competition and was voted to represent their District at the State Competition in March. Please come out and support the Drama Troop at this Benefit and help them raise money to take their show to Tampa! The show takes the stage on Monday, March 17th at 7 p.m. and will be presented at JP Taravella High School auditorium, 10600 Riverside Drive, Coral Springs. Tickets are $10. For more information, contact Kristina Johnson at 754-322-1250.
Cook-Off Contest for Springs’ Teens The Coral Glades High School Drama Department is proud to showcase “How Can You Run With A Shell On Your Back?” an anti-bullying piece about six 9 year old students who get stuck in detention just days before summer vacation. They all come from different backgrounds but by the end of the show they realize through the lessons told through Aesop’s most beloved fables, including, “The Tortoise and the Hare.” and the “Boy Who Cried Wolf,” that they should look past their differences and all be friends.
State and county elected officials will be in attendance, along with the Coral Springs City Commission. Last year, over 350 high school students representing Coral Springs High, Marjory Stoneman Douglas High, Coral Glades High, Coral Springs Charter, J. P. Taravella High and Coral Springs Christian Academy attended the event at the Center for the Arts. Before the official event starts, students will be treated to complimentary food items donated by local restaurants. Participants will also have the opportunity to win prizes and earn service hours. Keep up with what teens are saying on Twitter by searching #TeenPoliticalForum. This event is planned and organized by high school students with guidance from Vice Mayor Larry Vignola and City staff. To get an idea of the event format, visit www.CoralSprings.org/ teenpoliticalforum. There you can watch the promo video produced by the students involved in organizing the event, among other details. What Homeowners Need to Know About Florida’s New Speedy Foreclosure Law
A
f ter a t wo year ef for t, Florida legislators approved a new foreclosure law that signif icantly af fects the rights of homeowners struggling to pay their mor tgages. Under the veil of “helping Florida’s economic recover y,” Governor Rick Scot t signed House Bill 87 into law on June 7, 2013. Unless this new law is over turned by the c our ts, it is expected to have a profound impact on the foreclo - sure process in favor of the banks and homeowners’ associations. The new law permits a lender or its ser vicer to f ile a foreclosure action and instead of being re - quired to prove its right to foreclose, it unfairly shif ts the burden on the homeowner to “prove” that the lender “does not have the right ” to foreclose. This new procedure is time sensitive, and if the homeowner does not provide the necessar y evidence, a f inal judgment of foreclosure is entered. In as quickly as 45 days, the proper t y c ould be sold at a foreclosure auction. The new law also provides homeowners’ associations with same expanded rights to quickly evict non - paying homeowners through this new expedited foreclosure process. For homeowners that are behind on their mor tgage or HOA payments (but not yet in foreclosure), it is imperative that you immediately consult with a legal professional about your case. There are a number of “pre foreclosure” steps that must be taken in order to defend yourself and your family from this new speedy foreclosure law. Remember you will only have a limited amount of time (20 days) to prove that the par t y suing for foreclosure does not have the legal right to do so. This means that the evidence needs to be gathered before the foreclosure process star ts, and there are critical requests for information that must be presented to lenders prior to a foreclosure to avoid losing your home. The new speedy foreclosure law also states that if your house is foreclosed on fraudulently, you cannot get it back. You will only be entitled to f ile an action for damages against the lender or other par t y that obtained the wrongful foreclosure. We all know that in foreclosure cases there are a disturbing number of mistakes being made by banks and their at torneys. For those homeown - ers currently in foreclosure, it is critic ally impor tant that any mistakes in the process be identif ied and brought to the at tention of the cour t BEFORE a f inal judgment. In shor t, this new speedy foreclosure law is wrong, and it clearly violates the due process rights of the good citizens of Florida. It will force many more homeowners into bankruptcy as the only reli - able means of saving their home.
More detailed explanations of different options available to homeowners in foreclosure, at risk of foreclosure, or considering bankruptcy are discussed in a new consumerfriendly DVD developed by the Arcia Law Firm entitled “Fight For Your Home,” available for pur-chase on our website. If you mention that you heard about the DVD through this magazine you will receive a FREE copy during the appointment to discuss your case in detail with a member of our qualified legal team. Living Your Life While in a Lawsuit - Part II
L
ast month we looked at the first three steps to living your life while in a lawsuit. This month, I reveal three more steps that will help you manage your expectations while involved in litigation. Here is a brief summary of the first three steps: 1. Understand and accept that there are no guarantees 2. Consider and reconsider a compromise 3. Live up to your commitment Step 4: If you are having problems with a positive focus, seek help. Whether the help is from a confidante, a mental health professional, an attorney or a good friend, ask for help. Don’t be so prideful that your pride interferes with the results you say you want. There is nothing wrong with needing help and seeking that assistance.
2014 Sunday, April 6 • 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Sportsplex at Coral Springs • 2575 Sportsplex Drive
Free Admission • International Food Live Entertainment • Pony Rides • Petting Zoo Inflatables & more!
Step 5: Consider who is in your inner circle. Are they aligned with you, who you are and what your mission is? If you have one of those naysayers in your inner circle who just always seems to have a negative perspective, get that person out of there! Sure, you love that person. That person may even be your sibling. But if he/she is not in alignment with you, why keep him/her so close as to bring you down? You do not have to kick them out of your life, necessarily, just out of that inner circle.
Ethnic Cooking Demos Recipes & Sampling
Step 6: Stay positive and agile. Going through a lawsuit with a negative approach never helped a litigant. It is another matter to be cautious, prepared and ready for the unexpected. When I have cases with clients that are convicted in their beliefs and positive that they’re doing the right thing, that increases our chances of success a great deal. When I have a client that has grasped Step 1 and can flow with the unpredictability of a lawsuit, I can walk into a trial knowing we have the best chance of success. That client has a much greater probability of prevailing because their focus permits them to testify openly, truthfully, from their heart and with conviction.
NEW! Cultural Village Visual exhibits designed to bring us all together in celebration of diversity
None of this is easy. Litigation is not easy. Life is not easy. Now that we are clear that none of this is easy, focus on your objectives, how you get there and LIVE YOUR LIFE!

Jasmine Thai & Sushi - Same Great Food, Modern New Feel For Chef Peter Hongnopkhun, cooking is in his blood. “We Thai people are born with it. It comes naturally... We learn from our [family]. If you practice, you can be really good,” he says. He must have practiced a lot because several years after he moved to America, he opened up a restaurant, in 1988, called Jasmine Thai that, 26 years later, is still bringing in customers. In fact, now that they have moved to a new, more visible location, at 1785 N. State Road 7, Margate, their customer base has increased three-fold. What was once an intimate and traditional feel has now expanded to be a spacious establishment that is sleek and modern, with an open kitchen and bar. They serve wine, beer and sake and are working toward getting a full liquor license. They have a patio that is perfect for a quick lunch to catch some rays or for lounging after work with friends. “This is the way we always wanted it,” says Peter. “This is the new trend … open... Now, we own our own building and can do it the way we want. The food has not changed; it is always good. We care about what we are serving. We always use the best cuts of meat. For pork, we use tenderloin. For our shrimp, we use wild caught. For sushi, we use AAA tuna. Salmon comes from three places; we only buy the best – Scottish. Fresh, dry sea scallops cost $17-$18 per pound, but we still use it and we know we can’t charge a lot of money for our customers. We have good quality at an affordable price. Anyone who comes will not be disappointed.” He is working with his son, Ben, who came from Florida State University with a Finance and Economics degree under his belt, to help dad with the business when the recession hit. Peter’s daughter, Christine, who lives in D.C., also has a stake in the family business. “We weathered the storm,” says Ben. “Dad took a lot of my input. He has the experience and I have ideas. We kept everything we used to do, but have a modern approach

1 from services to plating. It is very new and fresh. We kept the good things and made others better. If you do the right thing, success takes care of itself at the end. We always try to improve.” They offer Sushi and Sashimi, as well as starters, small plates, soups, hot Thai entrees and dessert. Here, even their egg 2 rolls are homemade. Begin your meal with an order of Angel Wings. This unique creation is deboned chicken wings, stuffed with imitation crab meat, that are steamed and fried. The result is a mix of textures and a unique taste. It is served with a sweet chili garlic sauce. Craving sushi? Try one of their most popular rolls – Sex on the Moon. Perfectly wrapped to be easily eaten and melt in your mouth, the roll includes Shrimp Tempura, imitation 3 crab, avocado, eel and masago and is topped with tuna and the can’t-get-enough Bomb Sauce. A traditional favorite is the Panang Curry. Mild with just the right about of spice, this dish with, red peppers, wild lime and basil leaves, sweet peas and fresh green beans, is nurtured by a creamy peanut sauce. It can include chicken or pork, or for $2 more, shrimp, scallops, beef or squid. Pair your entree with a Lychee Saketini. Made from 100 percent lychee juice, the taste is light and slightly sweet with no bite and no sugary syrups. They also have Pad Thai, Roast Duckling (which takes 4-5 hours to make), Frog Legs Basil, Volcano Shrimp, and much more. A popular choice is Tornado Chicken, a boneless chicken breast topped with sweet chili garlic sauce served atop stir fried vegetables. Try one of the

seafood dishes; they even have lobster! All entrees are served with white or brown rice. For dessert, they have choices ranging from fried ice cream to Tempura Cheesecake. Prices are reasonable for dinner ($8-$10: small plates, $13 to $15: most entrees, $15 to $28: most signature items). The real deal is lunch, where most entrees are under $10. Besides nightly specials, Happy Hour is 5 to 7 p.m. every day with two-for-one drink specials and $5 for chef’s choice of sushi rolls, which is different every night. They are open Monday - Friday for lunch from 11:30 to 3 p.m.; for dinner, 5 to 10 p.m. Monday - Thursday, and until 10:30 p.m. Friday - Saturday; 5 to 10 p.m. on Sunday. They have take-out and, for large parties, they will deliver. They also often have parties in-house or will cater events.

New Fire Chief for Coral Springs The City of Coral Springs has named Frank Babinec to be the Fire Chief. Frank Babinec, a City employee for the past fourteen years, is the former Deputy Fire Chief, and has been serving as the Interim Fire Chief since Mark Curran’s retirement in December 2013. After an extensive two-month national search, City Manager Erdal Donmez announced the appointment on February 5, 2014. “We have a unanimous recommendation to have Frank Babinec become the next Fire Chief,” Donmez said. “He is well respected in our organization and became interim fire chief when Mark Curran retired. His leadership will benefit the men and women of our Fire Department, our organization and our community.” “From a young age, I knew I wanted to be a firefighter but I never thought it would lead to this,” Babinec said. “This is truly an honor for me and I want to thank the Commission and City Manager for their support. We – because it’s a team effort – won’t let you down. To the men and women of the Coral Springs Fire Department, we have a long and exciting road ahead of us. It’s an honor to be the 11th Fire Chief of this great organization.” Babinec has a bachelor’s degree in Organizational Leadership from St. Thomas University and an MBA in Public Administration from Columbia Southern University. In his previous capacity as Deputy Chief, Babinec helped guide 200 employees in eight fire stations and certified training center. He also participated in negotiating and managing the collective bargain agreements and managing inter-local agreements. Since joining the City in 1993, Babinec has moved up through the ranks from firefighter to Fire Chief.
Coral Springs Fire Academy Recognized The Florida Fire Training Directors Association has named the Coral Springs Fire Academy as “Florida Fire Service Training and Education Provider of the Year” for 2013. The Academy also received this distinguished recognition in 2007 and 2011. Out of 39 deserving training centers from all across the state the Coral Springs Fire Academy was nominated and selected as the recipient for this coveted award. The selection committee chose the Coral Springs Fire Academy for their outstanding performance in training current and future firefighters, as well as their contributions to the development of innovative training programs. “The Coral Springs Fire Academy appreciates this recognition and is proud to be able to provide training to the fire service,” Fire Chief Frank Babinec said. “Our goal is to provide education and development through partnerships with surrounding agencies. Our Chief of Training Mike McNally and his staff have done a wonderful job at brining needed programs to the region.” The Donald A. Haupt Training Center has hosted and delivered training for over 2,500 students in various fire and medical courses over the past year. The Academy has assisted the United States Coast Guard with training, provided technical rescue training to the region and FEMA USAR Florida Task Force 2, assisted in training South American Firefighters, and has provided valuable training as well as numerous promotional exams for area fire departments. The academy is a true asset to the fire service providing in-service training to the firefighters of the Coral Springs Fire Department and partner agencies which prepares them to respond to and mitigate a wide range of hazards.
