Homecoming 2008: See pictures from the action-packed weekend

Concordia Blessed by Servant Leaders “If one of the occupying military troops forces you to carry his pack one mile, carry it two miles.” Jesus’ advice, recorded in the Sermon on the Mount, probably startles the average person today as much as when Jesus first expressed it. Jesus knew that volunteer labor can bless both giver and receiver because volunteer efforts express love. Stories about volunteer labor for Concordia’s welfare abound from when I was a student here. As a shining example, for decades the Concordia Guild sewed curtains for dormitory windows. Mr. Richard Danowsky, Sr., now in the church triumphant, voluntarily drove around Minnesota picking up food donations (a lot of rutabagas, potatoes and onions) from individuals and congregations for the Concordia cafeteria. State health laws now prohibit such food collecting, but Concordia remains a place where volunteers make a difference. Concordia friends and alumni, like our featured alumna Sally Cordes ’55, give precious time and great talent to enrich Concordia. Our alumni gatherings have never been the same since Sally’s creative energy began to draw more graduates back for meaningful celebrations. In addition, students, faculty and staff volunteer thousands of hours in activities like tutoring children, teaching Sunday School or Bible class, singing in choirs, coaching sports, serving meals to the homeless, teaching English to new immigrants and traveling globally for Christian mission projects. This edition of “Concordia St. Paul” says thank you to all who give time, talent or gifts to Concordia. We welcome others to do the same. Jesus also said, “Let your light so shine before people that they see your good works and give praise to your Father in heaven,” Matthew 5:16. We gratefully see your good works. Concordia dedicates this issue of our magazine to our colleague and dear friend, Scott Harr, JD. Professor Harr died suddenly and unexpectedly on September 30, 2008 but our faith in Christ knows that our human loss must now also rejoice in Scott’s heavenly victory. Scott’s deep Christian faith motivated his dedicated and skillful expertise in leading Concordia’s Criminal Justice programs. His legacy leaves not only a solid academic program but also grateful students and loyal friends. We pray that his wife, daughter, son and all who knew Scott will find comfort and peace in the promises of God and the memories of a well lived life.

Giving Back

Alumni show appreciation for what the University has done for them When Bob ’55 and Sally (Clingenpeel) Cordes ’55 moved back to Minnesota in 2003 after retiring, their top request to their realtor was; “We have to be 30 minutes or less from Concordia University!” They wanted easy access to campus so volunteering and attending fine arts performances would be convenient. Sally can’t imagine not giving back to a place that has given so much to her. The same sentiment is shared by many alumni. For Sally, Concordia has provided her more than an education. It has served as the meeting place for her and Bob, a place for fine-arts entertainment, and a social outlet. Sally expresses her gratitude by spending retired days volunteering for Concordia. Sally became more involved with the University in 2004. “When our 50th class reunion approached, I called the alumni office and said I would like to be instrumental in planning the reunion,” said Sally. “And after the alumni director picked himself up off the floor he said, ‘Great!’ Nobody had come forward to offer to help in this way.” Sally formed and managed a committee that organized a reunion with record attendance.

The following year, President Holst ’56 was preparing his golden reunion and he knew of Sally’s success so he sought her help. Under Sally’s direction, golden reunion attendance has skyrocketed. She now spends between 10 and 20 hours each week coordinating all of the reunions and Concordia’s travel program. The key to Sally’s success has been getting alumni to encourage each other to attend. She takes a lot of pride in watching former classmates reconnect. “It’s so much fun for me to watch the golden reunion folks have fun,” she said. “That means I’ve done my job.” Sarah Erkkinen ’02, director of Alumni Relations and the Annual Fund, values the insights and work of Sally and the many other volunteers helping increase alumni engagement. “Concordia benefits greatly by having a network of alumni who are passionate about reconnecting with their alma mater and one another,” said Erkkinen.

The council, founded in 1910, works in partnership with the office of Alumni Relations in sponsoring and planning ways for alumni to reconnect and give back to Concordia. Each year the council forms action teams, known as “A-teams.” Last year, the council formed the Executive, Mentoring, Recognition, Homecoming, Legacy of Diversity and Volunteer A-teams. The teams hosted events to reconnect alumni, they rallied volunteers, provided valuable career resources for current students, and recognized outstanding alumni.

Alumni Council members feel a sense of pride and involvement. “The University has maintained a commitment to excellence and acceptance in this global society without making an apology for its Christian standards,” said Clarence Jones (’99 ’03), Alumni Council vice-president. Members also feel loyalty to the University’s mission. “Concordia hasn’t lost sight of the Gospel as a central role in education,” said Rev. Dennis Heiden ’79. “I am able to stay connected to my roots and support what God did for me as a student while playing a role in that happening to other young men and women.” Bob Cordes feels the same. “I still promote the University because it’s such an important part of the church’s ministry,” he said.

COVER STORY Council members have a sense of connection to the Concordia community. “I get to know people who’ve experienced the University in a different era,” said Rhonda Behm-Severeid ’88, Council president. “It’s interesting to find you have a shared experience but went to Concordia 20 years apart.” The Council gets a glimpse into the lives of current students through their close relationship with the Student Alumni Council (StAC). StAC, founded in 2004, serves as the bridge between current students and alumni. Like the Alumni Council, StAC organizes and hosts events throughout the year for students to connect with alumni. Acting as ambassadors for the student body, they keep alumni in touch with life as a current Concordia student. Just the way current students share their lives with alumni, alumni enjoy telling students about their days at Concordia. Melissa Bergdall ’09, StAC member said, “I helped out with Golden Reunion for the class of ’58 and getting to listen to some of their experiences was priceless! I heard about how the dorms were set up, how much it cost to attend school, and other interesting things.”

willing to give back to Concordia in many ways,” said Erkkinen. “They’re focused on investing in the future of Concordia. They understand the stronger Concordia is, the more valuable their diploma is. They’re not satisfied with Concordia being mediocre.” Sally believes Concordia’s future is as bright as hers and Bob’s was at the moment of their meeting in chapel in 1955. “Concordia has come a long way since I was a student here,” Cordes said. “Some people have criticized that CSP isn’t what it was back in the 50s and 60s. Well of course not! I am not the same person I was back in the 50s and 60s either. The important thing is that the Gospel is still being taught and proclaimed here.” And for that reason, Sally and so many others think it’s important to give back.

StAC also works to maintain Concordia traditions. They celebrate Founder’s Day each fall to remind students of Concordia’s rich legacy. Root beer floats are served and those gathered sing happy birthday to the University. “StAC allows the entire Concordia family to keep its traditions alive,” said Bergdall. “We really encourage school spirit and giving back to the school that has given us so much.” StAC member Tim Sailer ’09 said the organization allows its student members to start thinking about what life will be like as alumni. “I’ve been able to gain a better sense of alumni involvement and what they can do for Concordia,” said Sailer. “Being a part of the Concordia community doesn’t stop once you get your diploma.”

Homecoming is a way for everyone to celebrate the Concordia community. The number of volunteers at Homecoming shows increased support for Concordia. This year, there were more than 60 Homecoming volunteers. Volunteers helped with registration, in the Bear Garden and with set-up and take-down. “Our events continue to be successful because of our great volunteer leadership,” said Erkkinen. Alumni Council past-president, Steve Pickel ’76, sees the value of volunteers too. “It takes volunteers to make this place go and there are a lot of people with different personalities and gifts that can generate ideas so that we can continue to shape and move this place forward,” he said. Erkkinen said volunteering is a meaningful way to impact future alumni and continually encourage and foster Concordia’s growth. “It’s inspiring to me to see alumni

Reaching out to churches Amy Scholz joined the Concordia staff in July as the new director of Church Relations. Prior to coming to Concordia, she was the director of Church Relations and friends of Concordia at Concordia University Wisconsin and has worked in Lutheran higher education for more than 11 years. Her role is to build and encourage relationships between Concordia and congregations. Scholz will represent Concordia at various LCMS events and other church-related gatherings. The Office of Church Relations works closely with many departments on campus and communicates with churches about the happenings at Concordia through Concordia Sundays, presentations and oncampus events. “We want to be a resource to our churches and I am looking forward to strengthening

our collaborative relations,” said Scholz. “I am really excited to share all the wonderful things happening at Concordia!” Amy is pursuing a master’s degree in student personnel administration from Concordia Wisconsin and in addition to her professional vocation, she keeps busy with various volunteer and church activities. She married Rev. Michael Scholz in May and they live in River Falls, Wis. where he serves as Pastor at Luther Memorial Lutheran church. Concordia Responds to Global Climate Change and the Growing Green Economy Dr. Bruce Corrie, dean of the College of Business and Organizational Leadership (CBOL) knows an emerging economy when he sees one. And as the green economy begins to boom, he is ensuring Concordia educates students to respond to the industry. CBOL will formally launch a green Bachelor’s of Business Administration degree in fall 2009 to fulfill the growing demand for qualified workers in the industry. Corrie said behind every technical job the industry creates, there are just as many business and management jobs. “Not every occupation is green but you can become green by making some changes,” said Corrie. He said the green BBA fits Concordia’s mission to prepare students for enlightened care of God’s creation. “We would like our students to think about the business decisions they make and be stewards of our resources.”

“When you’re greening the economy, we need to make sure people grow with it,” said Corrie. As another way to foster that growth, Concordia

partnered with ALANA (African, Latino, Asian and Native Americans) and hosted a Green Summit for community business leaders to talk about global climate change and their responses. Lois Quam, leader of strategic investing, green economy and health at Piper Jaffray, spoke at the summit and urged leaders to try new things and adapt quickly. “The measure of [Minnesota’s] success isn’t whether we’re moving quicker than in the past or quicker than other states,” she said. “It’s about the Earth. Global climate change—it’s begun, it’s underway.” Corrie is excited to meet the needs of the business world and world at large by offering this very unique degree. “The green economy has the potential to transform our lives in very dramatic ways. We at the College of Business and Organizational Leadership would like to prepare our students for the future green collar jobs and green businesses.”

Rare reunion

Vangs and Bergs Meet Again Help. It’s what Christians do — and what Leslie and Meredith Berg did when Augustana Lutheran in West St. Paul, Minn., asked members to sponsor Southeast Asian refugees. The Bergs stepped up and then let go without expectations. After 29 years, the families found one another again in a rare, joyous reunion.

When Vangs and Bergs first met at Twin Cities International Airport in 1979, Meredith waved a photo at the gate. The Vangs knew no English. “I see my picture first,” remembers Houa Vang, now knowing English. “That made me feel better.” He was 23, his wife Lia Pha younger and pregnant. Their toddler scrambled beside them. Vang’s worry was his family. “Are they going to be safe,” he wondered. At an airport escalator, the newcomers stopped. The Bergs suspected cultural shock — but Houa Vang now describes a tired, pregnant wife afraid of falling. Vangs and Bergs took the stairs into their new life. Bergs assisted the Vangs in finding jobs and an apartment. They showed Vangs how to take buses and go to the clinic for baby shots and checkups. Then a return trip when the toddler burned himself with a pan of hot water. How did they communicate? “We didn’t,” said Meredith. A touch on the shoulder or smile sufficed when no translator was present. “Their lives were in our hands,” said Meredith, “and they knew that.” Once here, Vang learned English and took factory jobs. He now works at Pioneer Packaging and Printing Inc. in Anoka. Lia Pha does medical assembly work at another plant. Daughter Amme Vang, born in 1987, said her family lives what she calls “half the Hmong life, half the American life.” The passenger-service worker at Twin Cities International Airport praises her parents. “Mom and Dad always worked so hard,” Amme said. “They had the courage to bring the family over.”

Lee Pao Xiong, Concordia’s director of the Center for Hmong Studies, thinks reunions between refugees and their sponsors are rare. This one happened when the Bergs, of North Hudson, Wis. — Meredith a retired teacher, Leslie a retired 3M chemist, both longtime Concordia friends — saw a “Concordia St. Paul” magazine story on Xiong gathering archives. The Bergs sent Xiong photos of the Vangs and a ring from them made of remnants of wreckage from the Vietnam War. Xiong circulated the photos in hopes to reunite the families. The June 27 reunion surprised the Bergs. The Vangs now have eight children and seven grandchildren. All speak English, but quiet Lia Pha spoke volumes without it. “She did not let go of my hand the whole evening,” said Meredith. Meredith’s scriptural guidance on this one? Faith without works is dead. “We can make a difference in somebody else’s life, if we just step out of our own comfort zone,” said Meredith. Story by Marc Hequet

Concordia To Build Stadium and Outdoor Track

Sea Foam Stadium

With the largest single gift in Concordia’s history, the University launches a fund drive for a new stadium and outdoor track. The project will feature a football/soccer field, artificial turf, running track, field equipment, scoreboard, lights, temporary and permanent seating, parking, inflatable bubble, concession facilities, locker rooms, weight training, press box, outdoor plaza, offices, and hospitality rooms. The $5 million gift by Phil Fandrei ’51, Mark Hanson and Matthew Hanson, the executives and management of Sea Foam Sales Company, makes it possible for the University to undertake this project but significant fundraising is still needed. “It truly is another opportunity to

have God’s glory be exemplified,” said Phil Fandrei ’51. “Concordia is changing with the times and trends, but God remains at its center.” An on-campus athletic facility will strengthen Concordia and the community by boosting student recruitment and retention, enhancing school spirit and pride, offering community outreach, and increasing Concordia’s visibility. The stadium will be built on the corner of Concordia Ave. and Hamline Ave. and be visible to the hundreds of thousands of motorists who travel Interstate 94 daily. Concordia hopes to open the facility by the fall of 2009.

Life-long Passion for Art Earns Fields McKnight Fellowship Concordia resident artist, Marko Fields, has had a few epiphanies in his life. One of his greatest was in 1991 when he first laid his hands in clay. Since then, Fields has developed a passion and knack for developing high-caliber artwork that has earned him one of this year’s prestigious McKnight Fellowships.

With the remainder of his fellowship money, Fields will travel to various cities in Mexico exploring native art. “I find myself drawn to the art by tribal and indigenous communities who don’t even have the word art in their vocabulary,” said Fields. “They cover their clothes, bodies and houses with this art but they don’t even consider it art. It’s very much an intrinsic part of their lives.” This spring, Fields also plans to conduct research in Jingdezhen, Fields’ enthusiasm for art blossomed long China, the porcelain capital of the world. before he discovered clay. His affinity for native art is rooted in his Comanche heritage Fields said receiving the fellowship was a defining and Wichita, Kan. upbringing. He started moment in his career. “I’ve won a lot of prizes, taking art lessons as a child and his interest shows and awards along the way but getting a never waivered. It was at KU where Fields was introduced to clay, a life-changing moment he ranks next to the moment he first saw the 12 steps of recovery. “It was one of the pivotal moments in my life,” said Fields. “It is what I’d been looking for all of my life.” He went on to earn his master of fine arts degree from Kansas State University and achieved his lifetime goal of becoming a college professor. For his outstanding work in ceramic arts, Fields earned a prestigious McKnight Foundation Fellowship this year including $25,000 to spend reflecting and exploring art to further develop his craft. Wanting to give something significant to Concordia and to continue researching his medium, Fields purchased a soda kiln for the art department with a portion of the fellowship money. The kiln introduces diluted baking soda to the clay pieces when it reaches a very high temperature. “It creates flashing and visual affects you can’t get any other way,” said Fields “It’s quite dramatic and beautiful.”

ALUMNI NEWS 1930s Rev. Fred Miller’s (’30) wife, Frida, passed away on November 12, 2006. The two were married in May 1935. Rev. Miller was ordained the following month. He served in the military from 1941 to 1964.

IN MEMORY Rev. H. William Lieske (’33 ’35), was called to our Lord on August 13, 2007. Rev. H. William Lieske was born on October 14, 1916, in Minnesota. He graduated from Concordia Theological Seminary, St. Louis on June 6, 1941. William married Helen Koeing on June 21, 1942, at Holy Cross Lutheran Church. Their marriage for nearly 65 years was blessed with six children. Rev. William Lieske served as a pastor in the LCMS from his ordination on June 12, 1942 until his retirement in 1985, when he continued to serve various vacancies. He served congregations in Joliet, Ill. (1942-1949), Topeka, Kan. (1949-1955), Salina, Kan. (1956-1960), New Orleans, La. (1960-1966), and Warrington, Fla. (1966-1969). He served as executive secretary for Parish Ministry of the Southern District of the LCMS from 1969-1983, living in New Orleans. Rev. Martin H. Kretzschmar (’33 ’35), entered the kingdom of triumph on March 6, 2007 surrounded by his loved ones. He was survived by his wife Alma, six children, 19 grandchildren and 34 great grandchildren. Martin attended Concordia Seminary in St. Louis and was ordained December 7, 1941 in Wrenshall, Minn. and faithfully served 12 congregations. Rev. Kretzschmar served his country in WWII. In 1951 the National Guard was activated and once again Martin was called to serve his country, this time in the Korean War. Martin served as Pastor at Christ Lutheran Church in Belmonte, Mass. (1953-1958), and Saint James Lutheran Church in Minneapolis, Minn. (1958-1966) which became the first racially integrated church in South Minneapolis. He also served at Zion Lutheran Church in Brainerd, Minn. from 1966-1973. Martin ended his career as a Pastor in Wisconsin at Redeemer Lutheran in 1979. Martin spent his final years at St. Andrew’s Village witnessing to many during coffee times and bridge. Carolyn Young, age 76, of Norwood-Young America, died at the Ridgeview Medical Center in Waconia. She is survived by husband LeRoy Young, former Concordia professor, children Randee Petterson (David) of Maple Plain, Cary Young of St. Paul, Mark Young (Missy) of Chaska, Dan Young (Ann) of Hamburg, Paul Young (Ruth) of Lakeville. Jim Hahn, former faculty member, passed away on Tuesday, Sept. 23, 2008. His funeral was held on Friday, Sept. 26. Memorials may be made to St. Paul’s Lutheran School, Lakeland, Fla.

Daniel Ondov ’43 married Lorraine Juengel on August 12, 1949 at Christ Church Minneapolis, Minn. They have three children and one deceased child. Daniel was ordained September 12, 1948 at St. John Lutheran Church in Rudyard, Mont. Daniel served there until September 1950. He then served in a number of churches including Lutheran in Missola, Mont. from 1950-1959, St. John’s in Scottsbluff, Neb. from 1959-1966, Bethany in Omaha, Neb. from 1966-1977, Trinity in Lincoln, Neb. from 1977-1989, and Mount Olive in Billings, Mont. from 1989 to his retirement in 1990. Daniel has received a number of awards from LCMS Foundation. He worked part-time for the Foundation from 1991 to 1998 as a planned giving counselor in the Montana District. Daniel also served on the Synod’s Stewardship Council for eight years, on Forward In Remembrance in the Nebraska District, and on the Nebraska and Montana District’s Board of Directors. They have five sons and seven grandchildren. Jerome retired from the St. Paul Fire Department in 1991. In 1995 Jerome and Angela moved to their home in the North Woods.

1950s Wittenberg English Ministry has just completed it’s 11th season in Wittenberg, Germany. During the tourist season of May 1-October 31, pastors from the United States, Canada and Australia traveled and conducted worship services in English on Saturday evenings in two historic churches there. There were also twice weekly 30minute devotions in the small Corpus Christi Chapel where Luther conducted small funerals and weddings. This season, four of the 13 participants were CSP alumni: Robert Cordes ’55, Vern Gundermann ‘57, Fred Wiese ‘58 and Loel Haak ‘58. Rev. Melvin Weseloh (Acad. ’50) celebrated his 50th anniversary of marriage and ministry in June 2007. He has four children and eight grandchildren. He has served in New York, Minnesota and Illinois. He received the Christian Education Award from the Lutheran School Association in Decatur, Ill. in 1997. He has also served in a variety of leadership positions for various congregations, districts and conventions.

IN MEMORY David Schlade (Acad. ’58), was called to our Lord, August 26, 2008 at Henry County Hospital. David was born April 14, 1940, in Wellsville, NY, the son of Rev. Edwin Schlade and Irma Schlade. David is survived by his wife, Janice Yunker, whom he married in 1965, who survives. David served as a supervisor at GM Powertrain, Defiance, for 29 years, retiring in 1992, and was employed at Walker Mortuary of Napoleon. David was a veteran of the United States Navy, where he served as a member of the burial honor guard. He was an elder of St. Paul Lutheran Church, Napoleon where he was a congregational chairman and served on the board of education at the church. David also attended Bowling Green State. Also surviving are a son, Eric (Dawn), Hamilton; a daughter, Sarah (Patrick) Jackson, Napoleon; two brothers Dr. Roger (Ruth Ann) of Swanton and Edwin II, Aitkin, Minn.; and four grandchildren. Services were held at St. Paul Lutheran Church Napoleon. Burial took place at the Glenwood Cemetery with military honors. Preferred memorials are to the church, Cystic Fibrosis Foundation or Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.

Roberta also worked for Lutheran Hour Ministries, serving in Beirut, Lebanon from 2001-2004. Mertice (Spaude) Brueske ’55 married on August 27, 1961. She has three children; Patrick, Elizabeth and Jeffery. Janette (Himmer) Dorn ’55 has four children, 16 grandchildren, and two great grandchildren. Janette and her husband celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in July 2007 with a Caribbean cruise. William Engelmann ’55 married on December 28, 1958. William has one biological daughter, Lisa, born October 10, 1966 and one adopted daughter, Holly, born January 26, 1973 and adopted in 1978. During William’s career as a chemist he had 75 publications and presentations as well as six patents, four United States and two foreign. In October and November 1995, William did a 10-day tour of Israel.

James Koehler’s (’52) wife passed away in September 2002. James has traveled throughout Europe and the United States. Herbert Spomer ’52 celebrated his 50th wedding and ordination anniversaries in 2007. He retired in June 1998 from the Evangelical Lutheran Church of St. Thomas, Pa. Richard Holstein ’53 is married with four children. After receiving his associate of arts degree at Concordia University, St. Paul, he received his bachelor’s degree at Morningside College in 1960, and his master’s degree in 1971 from Portland State University. Lois (Wenger) Pera ’53 met her husband, Rev. Victor H. Pera, at Concordia University, St. Paul during the 1951-1952 academic year and the two were married in 1956. Victor passed away April 1, 2007. Victor and Lois have three children; Michelle, born March 10, 1958; Steven, born August 13, 1959; and their adopted son, Thomas, born March 19, 1967. Lois taught in Lutheran Schools from 1953 to 1957. She taught in Catholic schools from 1983 to 1991. She then taught in public schools from 1991 to 1999.

Mary Jean (Borer) Montag ’56 retired in 2001 after 45 years of teaching at St. Luke Lutheran in Cabot, Pa. She participated in multiple mission trips to Mexico and Biloxi, Miss. Charles Nuernberg ’56 received the 2007 Alumni Distinguished Service Award at Concordia University, St. Paul. Glorian (Splittstoser) Hein ’56 was recently recognized as one of the founding members of HOPE Adoption Agency. The agency celebrated its 30th anniversary this year. She went on a trip to inner-city Denver with youth from Christ Lutheran Church in Lake Elmo. Glorian is also an active volunteer at her church and at Lakeview Hospital. Alden Wildfeuer ’56 has six children, 19 grandchildren and six great grandchildren.

Walter Hannemann ’63 has been a church musician at St. Johns for over 40 years (classical, guitar, voice, and recently cello). He has been a part of the North Star String Ensemble, Classical Chorale, and classical guitar and voice duo with his wife Anita. Rev. Robert Krueger ’63 married Linda Pieper on December 27, 1968. They have three children; Robert, Scott and Jonathan. Dr. Robert J. Krueger received his B.S. at Concordia, Seward, Neb. He earned his M.A. and Ph.D. at the University of Nebraska. He is the department chair of mathematics and science at Concordia University, St. Paul. Scott H. Krueger lives in Ripon, Wis. He received his B.A. at Concordia Seward. Jonathan M. Krueger has his B.A. from Concordia University, St. Paul and lives in Woodbury, Minn. Rev. Krueger and Linda also have seven grandchildren.

S. René (Rubis) Siria ’69 married Bruce on June 30, 1973. Bruce and René have two children; David born April 12, 1974 and Stephanie born May 1, 1978. René has been a member and volunteering with the Kentucky Extension Homemaker Association for 34 years, the Frankfurt Rotary Club for 16 years, and the Franklin County Women Emergency Shelter for four years. William Spielman ’69 married Marilyn Dahlman on August 1, 1971. They have five children; Joseph born December 21, 1980, Heidi born July 2, 1982, Julie born October 5, 1984, Amy born October 5, 1984, and Thomas born October 10, 1985.

Edward Leatzow ’68 celebrated his 40th wedding anniversary on August 3, 2008. Edward has served 31 years as a Lutheran teacher. Edward has chaperoned numerous European trips. Pamela has 15 grandchildren. Lois (Spomer) Lehrer ’64 has been married to Rev. Wayne Lehrer since 1966. They have three grown children and one grandchild. John Lutz ’64 has been inducted into Who’s Who among American teachers. In May 2008, John traveled to China.

ALUMNI NEWS 1970s Karen (Freiberg) Fuchs ’72, the principal of Faribault Lutheran School, lost her husband, Bob, on Friday, July 25, 2008 to an apparent heart attack while on vacation in Wis. Linda (Rathjen) Kopps ’70 is married to Gary. They have three children; Jennifer, April and Michael. Marjean (Haack) Hahler ’70 and Jim have been married for 38 years. Their son Ryan is married to Kim Bryant. They have a daughter named Ella who was born in May 2006. Their adopted daughter Abigail is married to Jeremy Larson. Both children live in Minneapolis. Carol Petersen ’70 has two children; Cory and Paula. Cory is married and has three children; Miranda, Shenea, and Elizabeth. Paula is working on her master’s degree at NDSU. Rev. Dr. Douglas Wahlberg ’70 celebrated his 35th wedding anniversary and 31st anniversary of ordination. He and his wife Lynn (Ruisz ’73) have two grandchildren; Elijah (age 5) and Naamah (age 1). In May 2002, Douglas received his doctorate in ministry degree from Fuller Seminary, Pasadena, Calif. From 2004-2008, he served as dean of Caloosa Conference.

She traveled all over the world, visiting her classmate Jan Jolly in Hawaii, chaperoning for two Golden Valley Lutheran College European tours, visiting relatives in Norway, and visiting her son in Korea. Susan is married to Philip Blom, and they have two children; Matthew and Miriam. Miriam lives in Iowa and is married with three-year-old twins; Daniel and Annalise. Dallas Koffarnus ’73 is celebrating the birth of his first grandchild, Isaac Friedman, born on October 10, 2007. Dallas was awarded the Nebraska District 2006 Outstanding Educator of the Year. Wilfred Pieper ’73 and Nancy (Kuehne) Pieper ’74 are celebrating the wedding of their son Michael to Katie Tice. They have two grandchildren.

Alice (Gerike) Lunneberg’s (’71) son is a music teacher in Kingman, Ariz. and recently got engaged. Alice’s husband, Allen, is currently without a call, so they are looking, praying, and hoping for a pastoral call for him soon. Allen is a fill-in preacher at Lutheran Church of the Incarnate Word in Rochester, Michigan. Alice was employed at Peace Lutheran, Waterford, until May 2008.

Raymond Rush ’73 is a share holder of Jackson Hewitt tax offices in Mankato, Minn. He recently started a home food business with a company called Xango.

Marvin Soulek ’71 married Lynn Soulek on May 14, 1977. They have one son, Paul, who serves as the director of parish and school music at St. John Lutheran Church in Seward, Neb.

Thank you for all you do to support the mission of Concordia University, St. Paul. As Vice President for Advancement— which includes Alumni Relations and Development— I’m pleased to report on our fundraising and stewardship activities for the fiscal year, which ended June 30, 2008. We were blessed again with record-breaking contributions and involvement of alumni, parents and friends. Shared values and a commitment to Christian higher education led 3,217 benefactors to give more than $4,250,000. Of these, 331 of our donors are Concordia Stewards ($1,000+). Another 191 are Concordia Associates ($500-999). Thank you! Additional highlights of the past 12 months include: ■

Annual Fund giving, our most important day-to-day initiative, and gifts to Annual Scholarships increased by 22% to $843,596; The average gift to the Annual Fund increased from $261 to $366; Contributions to the endowment were up 5% to $909,990; More than $1,000,000 in new planned gift commitments were received bringing membership in the St. Paul Society to 375 donors;

Support for special initiatives and capital projects reached more than $2,000,000 including gifts to the Criminal Justice Institute, the Science Research Institute, the Center for Hmong Studies, the Oswald Hoffmann School of Christian Outreach and athletics.

We successfully launched our first online directory for the entire CSP community where we have received a record number of Class Notes, totaling over 1,000, from alumni and friends. I hope you have logged into Concordia.Avenue at ave.csp.edu! Increasing engagement with Concordia University, St. Paul’s mission bodes well for the future of the University and our shared commitment to educate future pastors, church workers, teachers, business people and the next generation of leaders in so many fields!
