Head Coach Jen Walter Before joining St. Scholastica in 2000, Walter was the assistant softball coach at Armstrong High School in Plymouth, Minn. and also served as head softball coach at Perham High School from 1989-91. She also coached basketball, baseball, softball, volleyball, and cross-country at Breck School in Golden Valley, Minn. while also teaching lower and middle school physical education from 1991-97.
Jen Walter Head Coach 16th Season
Jen Walter enters her 16th season as the head coach of the St. Scholastica softball program in 2015. The eight-time UMAC Coach of the Year has guided the Saints to 14 UMAC Regular Season titles the past 15 seasons and 12 UMAC Tournament Championships. CSS has made four NCAA Tournaments under Walter. Walter has had 12 winning seasons, including six with 30-plus victories. In 2014, Walter became the third St. Scholastica Head Coach of any sport to record at least 400 wins at the school.
In December 2006, Walter earned Master Coach status from the National Fastpitch Coaches Association. She continues to grow as an educator and a coach by participating in the Women Coaches Academy, co-sponsored by the Winstar Foundation and the NCAA. She also serves on the Midwest All-Region Selection Committee. “I have the greatest job in the world,” says Walter. “I get to be around young women who have the desire to become great softball players and along the way become great people. There are tons of frustrations and challenges, but in the end, the rewards, on the field and off, are so worth it.”
Under her tutelage, the Saints received their first national ranking in 2004 when they appeared in the NAIA poll and were ranked as high as No. 13. Upon entering NCAA Division III competition in 2005, the Saints took just over a year to appear in the national poll, peaking at No. 15, just missing out on an NCAA tournament berth despite going 34-7 overall. The Saints earned their first NCAA postseason bid in 2006 as the No. 5 seed in the Midwest Regional, where they earned Coach Walter’s 200th career victory. The Saints are 213-16 against UMAC opponents in Walter’s tenure. CSS has earned NAIA or NCAA postseason berths in nine seasons under Jen Walter, and won the NAIA regional in 2004 to earn the program’s first ever NAIA National Tournament berth. “What I love most about coaching at St. Scholastica are the players,” says Walter. “In my 14 years here, I have met some great student-athletes who have excelled both on the field and in the classroom and continue to excel beyond St. Scholastica.” Entering 2015, Walter has coached three All-Americans, including two-time first teamer Laura Heise (2004, 2006), second team honoree Rile Dawson (2007), and third team honoree Erica Kozacek (2003). Her players have earned 41 All-Region nominations, 95 All-Conference selections, and 10 conference player of the year awards. Walter earned conference accolades for her coaching in 2001, ’02, ’03, ’04, ’09, ’10, ’12 and 2014. After graduating from Wadena High School as a two-time AllState softball honoree, Walter went to Golden Valley Lutheran College in Minneapolis where she was named a Junior College All-American catcher and then Augustana (S.D.) College where she earned All-Region honors. She graduated from Augustana in 1986 with a degree in Health, Physical Education, and Recreation. In the summer of 2010, Walter was inducted into the Minnesota Fastpitch Coaches’ Association Hall of Fame as a player.

Upper Midwest Athletic Conference The Jerome Kruse Memorial Award was created in honor of Mr. Jerome Kruse, the longtime athletic director of Northwestern (Wis.) College and later Martin Luther College. Mr. Kruse’s life ended early, and the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) created the award to honor his dedication to the conference and its student-athletes. The annual award travels to the college that earns the most points, accumulated by the place-finishes of the college’s athletic teams in the final standings of the 17 conference-sponsored sports.

Kenwood Field
The Saints play on campus at Kenwood Field at the northeast corner of Kenwood and Niagara Avenues. It features a fully enclosed field with six foot fencing surrounding the field, along with a 25-foot backstop. The outfield fence is 210 feet to each field. Other features include: covered dugouts, a batting cage, a two pitcher bullpen, a 10x18 scoreboard and a full infield tarp. It also has water and electricity.
Nancy Jensvold Memorial Garden was built in the fall of 2004 to remember Nancy, the mother of team member Laura Heise who died of pancreatic cancer in August of 2003.

2014 Induction Class Del Genereau – Men’s Hockey Coach/Athletic Director – 1972-1977
Genereau was hired by fellow St. Scholastica Athletics Hall of Famer President Father Francis X. Shea to lead the institution’s first varsity athletics program, Men’s Hockey. Genereau, a former Duluth Cathedral High School Coach who was retired prior to taking the St. Scholastica gig, quickly built up the men’s hockey program into prominence. He guided the Saints to the 1975 NAIA Men’s Hockey National Championships and a 1976 runner-up finish. He was 7236-3 in four seasons as head coach. Genereau continued as Athletic Director through the 1977 school year. Genereau was inducted into the Minnesota Hockey Coaches Hall of Fame in 2003. Genereau passed away in 1988.
Randy Norgard – Men’s Hockey – 1973-77
Norgard was part of two NAIA Men’s Hockey National Championship squads in his time at CSS. A defenseman from Duluth Central High School, Norgard was named a NAIA All-American in 1977 and a three-time All-Tournament team selection. The three-time All-Conference choice was named the team’s MVP for the program’s second championship run in 1976-77 and was also a two-year captain.
Jeanne Fleck – Women’s Cross Country – 1994-96
Fleck was the first CSS runner to individually qualify for a national meet multiple times as she competed in three NAIA National Championship events. Fleck first competed on the CSS cross country team as a 29-year-old sophomore. She was the team’s Most Valuable Runner all three seasons and became the first to win the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) Individual Title in 1996. Fleck was a recipient of the 1996-97 CSS Female Athlete of the Year award.
Jen Quale – Women’s Basketball – 1996-2000
Quale was a two-time NAIA First Team All-Region selection in 1997 and 1998. She currently ranks second all-time in the St. Scholastica Women’s Basketball program with 1,574 career points. She led the team in scoring in three different seasons and was a member of back-to-back UMAC Championship squads. Quale has the most field goals made in a career in program history (624) and also ranks in the top 10 in career rebounds (497), free throws made (196) and steals (190). She was a four-time All-UMAC selection and was also named a NAIA Scholar-Athlete in 2000. Quale was the recipient of the 1997-98 CSS Female Athlete of the Year award.
Chris Lorentz – Softball – 1997-2001
Lorentz holds numerous program records for the CSS Softball team. She is the only player in program history to record at least 100 hits, runs scored, RBIs and stolen bases in a career. The two-time NAIA All-Region selection holds program records for games played in a career (183), runs scored in a career (175) and season (50), triples in a career (18) and stolen bases in a season (32) and career (109). The 109 stolen bases is tied for the Minnesota Collegiate record. She ranks second all-time in career hits (209) and is a four-time All-UMAC selection. She is a member of CSS Softball’s 25th Anniversary Team and was a NFCA Scholar-Athlete in 2001. She was also a two-time NAIA ScholarAthlete nominee. Lorentz also played soccer at CSS where she was named all-conference in 1998.
Neil Runbeck – Men’s Soccer – 1998-2002
Runbeck was the men’s soccer program’s career leader in points for over a decade until it was broke last fall by Joe Watt. Runbeck’s 157-point total is currently second overall. He led the team in scoring all four seasons. He holds the record for most shots in a game (14) and is tied for most assists in a game (4). His 20 goals and 15 assists during the 2001 season both rank in the top five. Runbeck was named NAIA First Team All-Region, Honorable Mention NAIA All-American, UMAC Player of the Year and Team MVP that season. Career goals was another record that Runbeck had to relinquish last fall to Andrew Jenkins. Runbeck has the second-most career goals (57) and assists (43) in program history. Runbeck was a four-time all-conference selection, including a two-time first team choice.
