Head Coach Chad Salmela races in Bozeman, Mont. Sharmila Ahmed also chalked up the Saints first ever individual Junior National Championship title, winning the 10km mass start freestyle at Soldier Hollow, Utah, after a regular season in which the Saints women as a team, placed their highest team placing in every event of the season but one.
Chad Salmela Head Coach 9th Season
Chad Salmela enters his ninth season as the St. Scholastica men’s and women’s ski team’s head coach in 2014-15. Salmela has been the only coach in the CSS Nordic program’s young history.
As a junior competitor, Salmela was one of the Midwest’s top junior cross country ski racers, then switched to the sport of biathlon at age 19. After eight years of competing nationally and internationally as a member of the United States Biathlon Team, he moved directly into the assistant coach position for the U.S. Biathlon Team in 1998, while finishing his college degree at Middlebury College in Vermont.
Salmela has placed the St. Scholastica Nordic Ski Program on the national stage, despite regularly competing against scholarship programs. In 2014, Paul Schommer became the program’s first All-American, placing eighth in the 20km freestyle. Between the men and the women, the Saints had a program-best eight All-Region performances. The third place finish between the two programs at the region championships was an all-time best.
After graduation, Salmela built and coached a national junior development program for biathlon, managed the 2002 Olympic Games biathlon competitions in Salt Lake City, served as assistant coach and wax technician for the U.S. junior world championship biathlon team, coached cross country running at the Marshall School in Duluth, and announced ski events across the country and on television.
The 2014 season also saw the women’s program earn its first team win and individual win at Mount Itasca. Sarah Allen took home the first individual win for the program. The women finished a program-best second at both the CCSA Championships and the NCAA Central Region Championships.
Salmela was the biathlon color commentator for NBC’s coverage of 2006 Torino Olympics and added cross country skiing and Nordic combined to his duties at the 2010 Vancouver Olympics. At the 2014 Sochi Olympics, Salmela was the analyst of the cross country ski events, biathlon and the cross country skiing portion of the Nordic Combined. Salmela became a household name for his exciting calls of the action.
In 2012-13, Salmela coached Jeremy Hecker to his second consecutive NCAA Championships appearance and Hecker also became the first men’s skier to earn first team All-Conference laurels in program history. Hecker was the only skier on the first or second teams that was from a non-scholarship program. The men’s squad finished a program-best second at the conference championships, beating out three scholarship programs. At the NCAA Region championships, the Saints finished a program-best third, beating out two scholarship programs. Salmela also guided the first female in program history to the NCAA Championships in 2013. Not only did Sharmila Ahmed qualify for nationals, but she also became the first female to earn all-conference honors in program history with a first team selection. In 2011-12, the men’s team registered its first individual win, podium, and team win in program history, as well as qualified two skiers to the NCAA Championships for the first time in program history, where Jeremy Hecker and Paul Schommer posted three top-20 finishes out of four www.facebook.com/css.saints

Assistant Coach 6th Season
Assistant Coach 5th Season
Josh Tesch enters his sixth season as assistant ski coach in 2014-15. During the 2014 season, when head coach Chad Salmela was at the Sochi Olympics, Tesch filled in and led the women’s team to runner-up finishes at the CCSA Championships and the NCAA Central Region Championships.
Andre Watt begins his fifth season as assistant coach in 2014-15 after volunteering with the Saints from the team’s inception in 2007. Watt was a skiing prodigy, winning the Minnesota State High School meet as a sophomore for the Duluth East Greyhounds.
Tesch walked on as a skier at the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay and was the first of two Phoenix skiers in program history to qualify four consecutive seasons for the NCAA Skiing Championships. His highest finish at the NCAA Championships was 13th during the 2000 season. Tesch assisted current U.S. National Ski Team Development coach, Bryan Fish, at UWGB after graduating.
As a junior competitor, he was one of the top skiers his age in the United States, finishing second to Kris Freeman at the USSA Junior Olympics as a J1. Watt trained under respected Russian coaches Nikolai and Antonina Anikin as an independent racer before moving onto the CXC Elite Team in 2005. Watt continues to train and race, splitting his time with the Saints coaching staff while racing for the Rossignol Marathon Team. His father, Adrian, was a 1968 US Olympic Team member in ski jumping.
Tesch is a full-time faculty member at Lake Superior College.

2014 Induction Class Del Genereau – Men’s Hockey Coach/Athletic Director – 1972-1977
Genereau was hired by fellow St. Scholastica Athletics Hall of Famer President Father Francis X. Shea to lead the institution’s first varsity athletics program, Men’s Hockey. Genereau, a former Duluth Cathedral High School Coach who was retired prior to taking the St. Scholastica gig, quickly built up the men’s hockey program into prominence. He guided the Saints to the 1975 NAIA Men’s Hockey National Championships and a 1976 runner-up finish. He was 7236-3 in four seasons as head coach. Genereau continued as Athletic Director through the 1977 school year. Genereau was inducted into the Minnesota Hockey Coaches Hall of Fame in 2003. Genereau passed away in 1988.
Randy Norgard – Men’s Hockey – 1973-77
Norgard was part of two NAIA Men’s Hockey National Championship squads in his time at CSS. A defenseman from Duluth Central High School, Norgard was named a NAIA All-American in 1977 and a three-time All-Tournament team selection. The three-time All-Conference choice was named the team’s MVP for the program’s second championship run in 1976-77 and was also a two-year captain.
Jeanne Fleck – Women’s Cross Country – 1994-96
Fleck was the first CSS runner to individually qualify for a national meet multiple times as she competed in three NAIA National Championship events. Fleck first competed on the CSS cross country team as a 29-year-old sophomore. She was the team’s Most Valuable Runner all three seasons and became the first to win the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) Individual Title in 1996. Fleck was a recipient of the 1996-97 CSS Female Athlete of the Year award.
Jen Quale – Women’s Basketball – 1996-2000
Quale was a two-time NAIA First Team All-Region selection in 1997 and 1998. She currently ranks second all-time in the St. Scholastica Women’s Basketball program with 1,574 career points. She led the team in scoring in three different seasons and was a member of back-to-back UMAC Championship squads. Quale has the most field goals made in a career in program history (624) and also ranks in the top 10 in career rebounds (497), free throws made (196) and steals (190). She was a four-time All-UMAC selection and was also named a NAIA Scholar-Athlete in 2000. Quale was the recipient of the 1997-98 CSS Female Athlete of the Year award.
Chris Lorentz – Softball – 1997-2001
Lorentz holds numerous program records for the CSS Softball team. She is the only player in program history to record at least 100 hits, runs scored, RBIs and stolen bases in a career. The two-time NAIA All-Region selection holds program records for games played in a career (183), runs scored in a career (175) and season (50), triples in a career (18) and stolen bases in a season (32) and career (109). The 109 stolen bases is tied for the Minnesota Collegiate record. She ranks second all-time in career hits (209) and is a four-time All-UMAC selection. She is a member of CSS Softball’s 25th Anniversary Team and was a NFCA Scholar-Athlete in 2001. She was also a two-time NAIA ScholarAthlete nominee. Lorentz also played soccer at CSS where she was named all-conference in 1998.
Neil Runbeck – Men’s Soccer – 1998-2002
Runbeck was the men’s soccer program’s career leader in points for over a decade until it was broke last fall by Joe Watt. Runbeck’s 157-point total is currently second overall. He led the team in scoring all four seasons. He holds the record for most shots in a game (14) and is tied for most assists in a game (4). His 20 goals and 15 assists during the 2001 season both rank in the top five. Runbeck was named NAIA First Team All-Region, Honorable Mention NAIA All-American, UMAC Player of the Year and Team MVP that season. Career goals was another record that Runbeck had to relinquish last fall to Andrew Jenkins. Runbeck has the second-most career goals (57) and assists (43) in program history. Runbeck was a four-time all-conference selection, including a two-time first team choice. Runbeck also played four years as defenseman on the men’s hockey team and was named to the NCHA All-Academic Team in 2002.
