Create a Safe Environment in Your School

In this class, I learned a great deal about an important, and often neglected, issue in our schools.

Cal State Fullerton’s Online Course for Educators October 28 - November 29, 2013 Cal State Fullerton’s 1-unit ONLINE course, Understanding and Addressing Bullying, offers insights and practical tools to understand bullying, especially as it pertains to physical appearance and gender identity along with actual and perceived sexual identity. Topics include: n W hat is bullying and who are bullies n U nderlying dynamics of bullying n C reating bully-free campus cultures n N ew laws, the education code, and legal precedents While there is a required textbook for this course, most of the curriculum is presented through video and online content. Contributors include experts from psychology, law, education and gender studies, as well as students and teachers who have dealt with bullying. This course is designed specifically for K-12 school administrators, staff and teachers, but will also give parents and students the information they need to partner with their schools on this important issue. Class features include: n A multimedia approach n S uccess stories from teachers and administrators n I nterviews with students n A broad range of reading assignments

This course was truly enlightening, especially hearing the perspectives of the actual bullying victims and their parents. Their heartfelt stories and insightful commentaries had a profound impact on me. This class has changed the way I will handle bullies and bullying situations in my classroom. Dr. Karyl Ketchum Assistant Professor, Women’s & Gender Studies, Cal State Fullerton

Dr. Ketchum is the passion behind development of this unique online course. Her family has first-hand experience with cyberbullying and she has been an active voice for establishing a bully-free environment in schools ever since. With the help of Research Assistants, Michelle Rouse and Jamie Lynne Hunt, she designed the course around a series of multi-media video components. This format allows for the inclusion of the voices and stories of real people who have been affected by bullying and, those who are now working to end bullying in schools. Ketchum speaks across the country on the topic of bullying based on gender identity and sexual identity and, on the role of technology in schools and in youth culture. Her article, “New Media Requires New Paradigms: Understanding the Hyper-Mediated 21st Century School Yard,” is included in the course section on cyberbullying. Dr. Ketchum received her M.A. (with Distinction) and her Ph.D. in Cultural Studies at the University of California, Davis. Her research emphasis is on critical and theoretical analysis of technology and new media, specifically focusing on representations of race, gender, sexuality, class, and nation.
