All Students Deserve a Safe Learning Environment

In this class, I learned a great deal about an important, and often neglected, issue in our schools.

Online Bullying Course for Educators March 3 - April 4, 2014 Cal State Fullerton’s 1-unit ONLINE course, Understanding and Addressing LGBT and Gender-Based Bullying, offers insights and practical tools to understand bullying, especially as it pertains to physical appearance and gender identity along with actual and perceived sexual identity. Topics include: n What is bullying and who are bullies n Underlying dynamics of bullying n Creating bully-free campus cultures n Who are transgender or gender-creative students? n New laws, the education code, and legal precedents While there is a required textbook for this course, most of the curriculum is presented through video and online content. Contributors include experts from psychology, law, education and gender studies, as well as students and teachers who have dealt with bullying. This course is designed specifically for K-12 school administrators, staff and teachers, but will also give parents and students the information they need to partner with their schools on this important issue. Class features include: n A multimedia approach n Success stories from teachers and administrators n Interviews with students, parents n A broad range of reading assignments

This course was truly enlightening, especially hearing the perspectives of the actual bullying victims and their parents. Their heartfelt stories and insightful commentaries had a profound impact on me. This class has changed the way I will handle bullies and bullying situations in my classroom. See page 4 for more information.
