Special Summer Trolley - RGC to Kinesiology (KHS199)

The renovation of the Mackey Auditorium this summer means that we will use the auditorium in Kinesiology for several classes. For those who want to ride, the special trolley schedule between RGC and KHS-199 is: Tuesday: from RGC to KHS-199: 12:15-12:40 pm from KHS-199 to RGC: 1:55-2:15 for “The People’s Houses” OR 2:25-2:45 pm for “Dynasties” Thursday: from RGC to KHS-199: 9:45-10:15 am from KHS-199 to RGC: 11:45 am-12:15 pm

No trolley service is operated from Lot G during the summer. Plenty of parking is available in Lot J and Lot E. If you are only attending a class in KHS199, the parking garage on Gym Drive near State College is closer to the KHS-199 auditorium. There is also a small lot, even closer, on the northwest corner of Gym Drive and West Campus Drive that may have space available.

OLLI is entirely self-supporting, yet our membership fees are remarkably low. Thanks to our volunteer base, funding from the Bernard Osher Foundation, and private contributions, members have the privilege—and fun‑—of taking as many courses as they want, all for one fee.

This “Blue Book” catalog exhibits our strengths. It is the result of collaboration by our curriculum committee, class coordinators, instructors, and many other volunteers. Yes, volunteers! An OLLI hallmark is that teachers are not compensated—most love teaching as much as we love learning—and instruction is contributed by guest speakers, top-notch CSUF faculty, and ourselves. All love the enthusiasm, genuine interest and real-life perspective OLLI members bring to class.

Welcome to the 35th year of lifelong learning at Cal State Fullerton. We are excited that important enhancements are being made during the summer semester to the Mackey Auditorium we share with CSUF students. Fortunately, we can still offer a full slate of classes using classroom space elsewhere. The Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at CSUF (OLLI-CSUF) is a community with more than 1,500 members who are enjoying a life enhanced by intellectual and social activities in a vibrant university environment.

About Us: The Basics Name and affiliation. OLLI-CSUF stands for Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at California State University, Fullerton. It is a 35-year-old lifelong learning program for retired and semi-retired adults, and an integral part of CSUF operating under the guidance of University Extended Education. We are affiliated with more than 115 other lifelong learning institutes in the United States, all part of major universities and funded in part by the Bernard Osher Foundation. Location: OLLI-CSUF is located in the Ruby Gerontology Center (RGC) on Gymnasium Drive in the northeast portion of campus near the Student Housing complex and the Gastronome dining facility. GPS location reference: 800 N State College Blvd, Fullerton, CA 92831. Mobile device map app reference: “Cal State Fullerton” or “Ruby Gerontology Service, Fullerton, CA.” See www.fullerton.edu/campusmap/ for a campus map. Learning spaces. Most OLLI classes and activities are held in the classrooms, auditorium and computer labs of the Ruby Gerontology Center (RGC), on the CSUF campus. The RGC, is the headquarters for our programs and is exceptionally well designed for the eclectic interests of OLLI’s learners. For example, our Shapiro Wing area, with moveable walls, can be divided into as many as four classrooms, becoming a concert space, a painting studio, and hosting a financial planning workshop, all in one day. We also use some nearby campus locations within a short walk, and hold a few classes at off campus locations in the area. Membership requirements. Anyone retired or semi-retired may join. Members from all backgrounds are welcome; neither a college education nor previous association with the university is a prerequisite for membership. The only requirement is a desire to learn. Curiosity never retires! Homework? Grades? Classes typically have no “homework” as you may remember it. There are a few classes—in areas such as language, literature and book discussions— where some optional work or study outside of class will substantially enhance student learning.

Special Member Benefits OLLI members enjoy: Student status privilege, which includes: • A campus parking pass • Library access and checkout privileges • Use of secure campus Wi-Fi network • Discounts at campus bookstore Auditing CSUF courses: On a space available basis with instructor permission, no fee Athletics: Free admission for two to all CSUF-sponsored athletics events

“A Continuing Learning Experience”

OLLI Governence OLLI is a volunteer organization, guided by a Board of Trustees elected annually from the membership by the membership. The Board is responsible for OLLI’s curriculum, finances, events and operation within university guidelines and its relationship with University Extended Education (UEE). General meetings of OLLI members are held several times a year to conduct business, convey information, and provide a forum for member exchange and feedback. Board meetings and those of other major committees are open to members and listed in “other activities” in the back of this catalog.

Joining / Registration / Fees To join, complete the three-page form in the center of this catalog and submit it with your membership fee during an Open House, to the OLLI office in person at another date, or by mail to the address on the application and back cover. You may also register online at olli.fullerton.edu/Register/Register.aspx Membership/enrollment fee, including a parking pass is: Summer semester only: $75 Membership fees cover a campus parking pass and admission to all classes. Note: A very few classes may have limited enrollment, usually for space or equipment considerations (e.g., some computer classes), and if so, early signup will be advised. Fees also cover participation in other OLLl-CSUF activities with the exception of some activities for which special expenses are passed on at the lowest possible cost. These include Computer Education, Special Event trips, and some Study or Activity Groups as specified in this booklet.

Other Fee-Related Items Reservation forms for special programs or social activities are included in the monthly OLLI Chronicle newsletter, which will be emailed or mailed to you per your preference. Payment is required when reservations are made. Refunds are given until the deadline specified on the form, and thereafter if a substitute is found for the reservation-holder. Joining after the semester has begun? Semester fees for new members are pro-rated midway through the semester; generally, full fees are requested prior to mid-semester, fifty percent any time after. Consult office for details. Scholarships. Financial assistance is available, and requests/awards are strictly confidential. Please contact or email the office at olli-info@fullerton.edu for the confidential scholarship application form three weeks prior to the start of the fall or spring semester.

Celebrating 35 Years of Lifelong Learning at Cal State Fullerton 2014 marks the 35th year of lifelong learning at Cal State Fullerton. Throughout the year, OLLI-CSUF will present special programs, events, recognition activities and historical presentations to mark this memorable milestone. We have much to be proud of. • We are one of the largest OLLIs in California, with one of the broadest curricula and member benefits. • Spring semester classes exceed 140. • Annually, more than 400 of our members volunteer for one or more assignments. • Uniquely, we occupy a campus building where more than 95% of classes are held. We also have convenient expansion space in nearby “smart classrooms.” • We have a dedicated parking lot and a parking lot shuttle that shortens the walk to and from the campus’ largest parking lots. • Through conservative budgeting and the support of the Osher Foundation, we enjoy a sustainable financial plan. None of these achievements would be possible without the ambition and incredibly hard work of our founders and their successors. Theirs is a story well-worth retelling to a new generation of OLLI members, as well as campus leaders and stakeholders who may be unaware of the miracle that OLLI-CSUF has become. OLLI owes its dynamic present to 47 learners who established the Continuing Learning Experience (CLE) and met in what is now the Golleher Alumni House. In 1982, founding CLE president Leo Shapiro led a dynamic team of members to raise funds for a building to serve as a center for CLE programs, as well as CSUF gerontology classes and related activities. Donations came from CLE members, foundations, businesses, and many other sources. Our 15,500 sq. ft. Ruby Gerontology Center (RGC) was the first nonstate-funded building on the campus. As we have grown, we have scheduled some of our classes in other campus buildings, as well as in three off-campus locations. In 2006, CSUF applied for and was granted a $1 million endowment from the Bernard Osher Foundation, with the proviso that we change our name to Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI). We did so, as did more than a hundred other university-affiliated learning programs in the U.S. In 2012, the foundation awarded a second $1 million endowment in support of OLLI. The interest from these endowments helps us continue CLE’s visionary legacy.

OLLI Today

OLLI’s membership is more than 1,500. Programs number more than 340 annually. In addition to being immersed in learning, members volunteer in support of OLLI, getting involved in curriculum development and presentation, community outreach, administrative support, and event coordination. This high level of volunteerism—a distinction among OLLIs nationwide—allows us to operate with just four paid staff. 657-278-2446 “A Continuing Learning Experience” 4

Mackey Auditorium - Jewel of the RGC This summer marks 26 years since the opening of the Ruby Gerontology Center (RGC) facility, and its crown jewel, Mackey Auditorium. The auditorium was named after Dr. Francis G. “Bud” Mackey, who was the retired director of St. Jude Medical center and one of Orange County’s leading physicians. The RGC was built with money raised by members of CLE (the predecessor to OLLI), all donated by local municipalities, businesses, and the CLE members. Dr. Mackey used his influence with the Orange County medical community to fund the auditorium, and they raised $350,000. Mackey Auditorium was the result of Dr. Mackey’s dream to build a state-of-the-art, multipurpose facility that could be used for lectures, research, and entertainment. He believed the auditorium would serve as both a learning center and a social center for both CSUF and CLE (OLLI), while also benefiting the medical community by supporting gerontology learning and research. And, in fact, it has been used extensively for these purposes over the years by the University’s Gerontology Academic Program as well as OLLI. Dr. Mackey based the design of the auditorium on the L.B. Mayer Learning Center at the USC School of Medicine. Mackey Auditorium was designed as a high-tech theater/auditorium. Each of the 230 seats contained a five-key electronic response device that fed into a computer that could record, compile, display, and store the responses, for use in research projects. The system allowed audience members to ask questions over the auditorium’s sound system. The auditorium also included audiovisual display and videotaping capabilities. The audience response system was eventually deactivated, but the auditorium has been continually updated with the latest sound and projection systems. During his term as Vice President of Facilities, Tony Package undertook the major task of addressing the safety and functionality of the auditorium. His team determined that the seats and flooring needed to be replaced. A lack of railings was another issue. As a result of this effort, the auditorium will undergo a massive renovation during the 2014 summer session. All the seats will be replaced, and railings will be installed. All the floor tiles and carpeting (including the stage) will be replaced with a slip-resistant surface. And a fresh painting of the interior walls will complete the overhaul. CSUF has agreed to pay a major portion of the renovation’s expense. Mackey Auditorium has served CLE and OLLI well for many years, and with its new lease on life, it is well-positioned to serve OLLI’s members and the University for many more years.

OLLI Fact: The Greatest Membership Benefit Ask OLLI members to identify the second best benefit of being a member and they may answer: the classes, or the parking pass, the OLLI trolley, auditing CSUF classes, or the ability to work with campus faculty, staff and students. If those are second best benefit, what is the greatest membership benefit? The OLLI members themselves, whose life experiences, generous spirit and curiosity provide a thriving environment for social connection, as well as intellectual and creative aspirations.

Volunteerism / Interaction / Support OLLI in the University Community OLLI supports an emerging model of retirement with volunteerism as a core element, and the University welcomes members’ involvement in campus programs as individuals and as part of OLLI-organized efforts. Annually, more than 400 OLLI members volunteer in support of OLLI activities. Their efforts improve and expand OLLI programs and activities while ensuring that OLLI membership fees are affordable. By completing the form in the centerfold, you can indicate your potential interest in volunteering. Members also contribute thousands of hours in support of CSUF programs, including the Art Alliance, Friends of the Fullerton Arboretum, Music Associates, Patrons of the Library, CSUF Athletics and others. The senior ushers at CSUF varsity baseball and basketball games are OLLI members, as are many who tend plants in the Arboretum and mentor students in numerous academic settings.

OLLI + CSUF students + Faculty = Collaboration OLLI-CSUF Collaboration Through the OLLl-CSUF Collaboration program, OLLI members share their life experiences and skills with members of the university community—to the benefit of all. Opportunities include tutoring, mentoring, evaluating, and sharing expertise with CSUF classes and individuals in both academic and career/professional pursuits. CSUF students and faculty benefit from our members’ accumulated knowledge and wisdom, and OLLI members enjoy the intellectual stimulation, the opportunity to remain productive, and “giving back” to the community. Learn how to get involved under “Other Activities” in this booklet, and on our website page at olli.fullerton.edu.

Programs for the newly retired and almost-retired Transition in Retirement New retirees or those approaching retirement have a special place at OLLI. Transitions in Retirement (TiR) is a series of programs for persons preparing for this next phase of their lives. Whether still working or not, you may not have enough weekday time to benefit from all OLLI courses. Transitions in Retirement addresses that with classes more to your convenience on weekends and during early morning, late afternoon and evening hours. We even annually organize a Retirement Boot Camp to help you get started! Transitions in Retirement Essentials classes on Saturday mornings are open to the public at no charge. This gives you a chance to “sample” what OLLI has to offer. Topics cover a wide range—from financial planning to health issues. Other TiR classes do require OLLI-CSUF membership. TiR offerings are specially marked in our course listings, and you can read more about our program on our website page at olli.fullerton.edu 12

Around and About OLLI How/Where do I Park? Parking privileges. A 24/7 parking permit is included at no additional charge with the OLLI membership, and you will be provided with a hangtag. OLLI members may park in any student-designated lot, with additional privileges in Lot J, adjacent to the Ruby Gerontology Center on the east. Lot J, with wheelchair access, is most convenient for our members with mobility concerns, so we ask that you keep this in mind when considering where to park. Parking lots. Please read the Parking section of this booklet for details and advice. In general, we recommend Lot G (see map), a short walk or a free OLLI Trolley ride away during spring and fall semesters; at semester beginnings, it is always advisable to arrive early (by 9:30). Student Lot E and the State College parking structure often have spots on light undergraduate class days. Quick parking lot mnemonic: J=Just for OLLI. G=Good most of the time. E=Every now and then. PS (parking structures)=Possibility sometimes. Arboretum=Abstain; OLLI members in the Arboretum lot will be ticketed.

Can I Eat In or Near OLLI? Yes! Eating with other OLLI members is a good way to become acquainted. When members bring their lunch, they usually have company in Shapiro Wing A, in the patio near the kitchen, or at a table in the courtyard. Lunches may be stored in the kitchen refrigerator. In addition, sack lunches may be taken on bus trips when special luncheon arrangements have not been made. Within a two-minute walk are several other eating or snacking opportunities: The CSUF Gastronome, a cafeteria-style eatery, serves fresh, wholesome, cooked-from-scratch and prepared-to-order meals throughout the day. The CSUF Community Market, to the left of the Gastronome, stocks a wide array of packaged snacks and fresh produce, hot and cold beverages, foods, and sundries. Several more minutes away is the Titan Student Union, with a selection of fast-food (some healthy) franchises and other options; see asi.fullerton.edu/tsu/ foodServices.asp for details. While you’re in that neighborhood, you can also shop at the bookstore or Titan Shops with your student discount or do some banking at the ATMs or SchoolsFirst.

OLLI Office The OLLI office is in RGC Room 7 (see map). It is open weekdays from 8:30 a.m. until 3:30 p.m. Campus holidays are observed (see apps.fullerton.edu/ AcademicCalendar/default.aspx). Office phone number is 657-278-2446, and OLLI’s general information email is olli-info@fullerton.edu. Staff members are Patsy Burns (Manager, Admin.), Wendy Gillilan (Assist. Manager) and Celia Reynolds (Admin. Assist.).

Other Restrooms are located outside on either side of Mackey Auditorium, on the north; and in the southeast corner of the RGC, adjacent to entrances to the Shapiro Wing. Osher Lifelong Learning Institute

Parking & OLLI Trolley Information Please consult the parking map in this booklet. OLLI-CSUF members may park in all CSUF student lots and parking structures, and also in Lot J, adjacent to the Ruby Gerontology Center and set aside exclusively for OLLI until 6 p.m. weekdays. Lot J is particularly convenient for our members with mobility concerns, so we ask that you keep this in mind when considering where to park on crowded days. When Lot J is full, Lot G, a short walk or Trolley ride to the RGC, is generally recommended. Lot G is located on the SW corner of Yorba Linda Blvd and Associated Rd., next to Goodwin Field. Lot A almost always has available spaces, but it is farthest away. On lighter class days such as Fridays, Lot E can be a good choice and is just a short walk away. OLLI Trolley. The OLLI Trolley is available Monday-Friday during spring and fall semesters (no summer service) to transport members between Lot G and the RGC, and many members prefer to walk. If you’re interested in volunteering as a Trolley driver, please apply in OLLI office. Note: Parking may be challenging during the first two to three weeks of each semester, while CSUF students’ schedules are settling, but it always improves shortly thereafter. During busiest times, it is advisable to arrive by 9:30 a.m. for morning classes. Members are required to display an OLLI-CSUF parking pass whenever they park on campus. By the Alphabet: CSUF Lots Available to OLLI Members: • Lot A: OLLI permits are valid in portions of Lot A. Please check signs before parking. Do not park in Lot A-South, because this is a faculty-staff parking lot. • Lot D: OLLI permit is valid in this student parking lot. • Lot E: OLLI permits are valid in portions of Lot E. Please check signs before parking. Do not park in Lot E spaces marked for faculty-staff parking. • Lot G (recommended): OLLI permit and daily parking permit are valid. • Lot H: For disabled and faculty/staff only. Please see “Disabled Person Parking” below. • Lot J: This lot is reserved only for OLLI members with an OLLI Parking Permit until 6 p.m. Monday-Friday, when faculty/staff permits are then also valid. Parking is not permitted in Lot J from 1:00 a.m. - 6:00 a.m. • Emeriti or University support permits are not valid in Lot J, and citations will be issued to those cars that do not exhibit an OLLI parking permit. See those permits for restrictions. • Lot S: OLLI permit is valid in this student lot.

Avoid a ticket: Members are required to display an OLLI-CSUF parking pass whenever they park on campus. Please be sure to check all parking signs to make sure your OLLI permit is valid where you are parking; it is not valid in faculty/staff lots, and you will receive a citation there. And note that the following parking areas are enforced 24 hours every day: • Red curbs/Fire lanes • 15-minute time zones • Service/maintenance stalls • Loading zones/white and yellow curbs • Disabled permit parking stalls Visitor Parking A limited number of 30-minute visitor parking areas are available on campus. For longer visits, a daily permit may be purchased for $8 in the machines in Lots A, G, S and Arts Drive, and on levels 2, 4 and 6 of the State College parking structure. Daily permits are valid in all student parking lots and structures during enforcement days/hours, but are not valid in Lot J, adjacent to the RGC. Disabled Person Parking Disabled person parking is available throughout the campus, including Lots J and H, either side of the RGC, which are both ramp-configured. You must have both a valid OLLI parking permit (or other valid campus-parking permit) and a DMV-issued disabled parking placard/license plate to use these spots. Additional Information For additional information on parking, please check with the OLLI office, see the CSUF Parking and Transportation webpage at parking.fullerton.edu, or call 657-278-3082. You can even check online for the current number of available spaces in parking structures.

Special Summer Trolley - RGC to Kinesiology (KHS199)

The renovation of the Mackey Auditorium this summer means that we will use the auditorium in Kinesiology for several classes. For those who want to ride, the special trolley schedule between RGC and KHS-199 is: Tuesday: from RGC to KHS-199: 12:15-12:40 pm

from KHS-199 to RGC: 1:55-2:15 for “The People’s Houses”

OR 2:25-2:45 pm for “Dynasties”

Thursday: from RGC to KHS-199: 9:45-10:15 am

from KHS-199 to RGC: 11:45 am-12:15 pm

No trolley service is operated from Lot G during the summer. Plenty of parking is available in Lot J and Lot E. If you are only attending a class in KHS199, the parking garage on Gym Drive near State College is closer to the KHS-199 auditorium. There is also a small lot, even closer, on the northwest corner of Gym Drive and West Campus Drive that may have space available (located across from the CSUF tennis court).

OLLI Fact: Snapshot of our “newest members” A survey of OLLI’s 2013 members found that 32% are former educators (K-12, community college, university). Other highly represented professions/occupations are managers (18%), secretaries (14%), information technology (11%) and health care workers (10%). The new members have diverse educational achievements. Nine percent hold doctorate degrees. 63% were awarded bachelor or masters’ degrees. 18

Jazz Series at Steamers - Open to the Public

Selected Saturdays • 12:30 pm - 2:30 pm • Steamers, 138 W. Commonwealth Ave., Fullerton The Jazz Series is an opportunity for OLLI members and their guests to listen to live jazz and hear a discussion about the history of a particular theme. The Rat Pack

June 7 The original Rat Pack was founded in New York by Humphrey Bogart in the 50s. In the 60s it evolved into a group of actors and musicians led by Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Sammy Davis Jr., Joey Bishop and Peter Lawford. This group left an indelible mark on the field of popular music, movies and the success of Las Vegas in the 60’s and 70’s. We will be discussing the history of the group and playing some of their most memorable music.

Satchmo

He became an iconic figure in the entertainment industry including records, TV, movies and jazz. We will be discussing his very colorful history and playing some of his greatest hits.

Capitol Records--The Early Years

August 9 Learn about the natural evolution of the Tin Pan Alley years. In the mid40s Johnny Mercer, a popular singer and songwriter, teamed up with fellow songwriter, Buddy De Sylva, and the owner of the largest record store in Los Angeles, Glen Wallich, to form Capitol records. It became the first major record company on the west coast and signed some of the most popular musicians of that era, including Peggy Lee, Nat King Cole, Frank Sinatra and countless others. We will be discussing the early history of this company and playing the music of its greatest artists.

LITERARY ARTS Book Clubs There are two separate clubs—see times and locations below Like reading books? Like to talk about life and happiness? This could be the group for you. We come together for one common interest—books. Yet, in exploring the stories or history together, we will discover we have so much more in common as well. We don’t follow one genre or one author, but try to find new areas to branch into each month. We may invite OLLI authors with manuscripts ready for publication. We don’t break the stories down, clinically, piece by piece. Instead, we prefer to discuss the story in general terms and how it relates to us. Alternate Mondays Book Club • 12:15 pm - 2:00 pm • Room 9 June 9, 23 • July 7, 21 • August 4 The Book Thief by Markus Zusak will be discussed- please read before the first meeting. Coordinators: Kitty Baier and Lisa Sewell or Alternate Fridays Book Club • 1:15 pm - 3:15 pm • Room 21 June 6, 20 • July 4 (Holiday, no class), 18 • August 1 The first book to be read is to be determined. Watch for a notice in the OLLI NewsBytes Coordinator: Ann DeVaney

Creative Writing

Alternate Tuesdays • 12:15 pm - 2:00 pm • Room 21 June 10, 24 • July 8, 22 • August 5 This is a class for people who just want to write, whether it’s essays, poems, or stories. We don’t teach you how to do it, but provide the opportunity for you to practice writing by writing. We have an assigned topic on which you have two weeks to work, and then a topic for a “quick write” at each session. Class members are also invited to participate in leading sessions and selecting topics for those sessions. We encourage members to share their written assignment in class, so we ask that it be kept to about 500 words. Come join us. It is lots of fun! Coordinators: Juanita Driskell and Rayleen Williams

LANGUAGES Please Note: • There will be no French 2 class during the summer. • Our OLLI language classes are “ongoing” and do not “start over” every year as they would in a high school or a university setting. Newcomers are welcome to sample our offerings and join any and all classes that suit their level of learning. Please note that we have two different Spanish 2 classes available on Friday mornings and afternoons. Take both of them if you like. Enjoy!

French 1

Every Wednesday • 8:30 am-9:45 am • Room 21 June 4, 11, 18, 25 • July 2, 9, 16, 23, 30 • August 6 Beginning French is for beginners who have little or no French language skills. Today, many French people in tourist areas speak English. Then why study French? To put a smile on their faces and to demonstrate appreciation for their culture. To create a positive atmosphere for communication you do not need a lot of French, but you need to pronounce the French expressions that you do know the “French way.” French 1 emphasizes pronunciation and basic conversation. It is suggested that students bring a French-English dictionary to class. Coordinator/Instructor: Gabriella Kolias

French 3 Workshop

Every Wednesday • 10:00 am - noon • Room 19 June 4, 11, 18, 25 • July 2, 9, 16, 23, 30 • August 6 Pendant la session d’été le cours de français intermédiaire est centré sur des présentations en français faites par les étudiants. Spanish 2 Friday Afternoons

Every Friday • 3:30 pm - 5:00 pm • Room 21 June 6, 13, 20, 27 • July 4 (Holiday, no class), 11, 18, 25 • August 1, 8 Prerequisite: Spanish 1 or some knowledge of conversational Spanish Learning a foreign language with even a minimal level of proficiency can be quite difficult. Yet, children do so with great ease. Why is this? The answer seems to be that children “acquire” language as presented on a daily basis by parents, siblings, friends, media, etc. Adults, however, tend to want to learn a foreign language using formulas and structure as bedrock. While this is of the utmost importance later...in the beginning, children learn organically. The language simply develops from seed to flower. Let’s become children once again! Bring your sense of wonder and leave your adult with the baby sitter. The Spanish 1 textbook, Barron’s Learn Spanish the Fast and Fun Way by Gene Hammitt (3rd Edition) is optional for this class. Coordinator/Instructor: Ricardo Acosta

Spanish 3

Every Monday • 1:15 pm-3:15 pm • Room 21 June 2, 9, 16, 23, 30 • July 7, 14, 21, 28 • August 4 Students will listen, speak, read and write in Spanish. Topics of high interest will be used to promote understanding of the language. Dialogues, role-playing and other interactive activities will be used to promote oral proficiency. Vocabulary and idiomatic expressions and their cultural background will be systematically explored. To address all parts of speech and all verb tenses, we use Practice Makes Perfect: Complete Spanish Grammar (1st or 2nd Edition). Although we build on past lessons, new students can join the class at any time. Some ability to function in a sheltered Spanish-speaking environment and to generate sentences would be a helpful prerequisite for this class. Coordinator/Instructor: Marjorie Mota

Public Service - How to Become Engaged in your Community

July 8 Speaker: Ron Garcia, Brea City Councilman Coordinator: Janice Jeng Brea City Councilman Ron Garcia will speak to us about why he feels it is important for folks to run for public office. He will outline what you need to do to run a successful campaign, including what you need to do to win, and once you win what your responsibilities are as a council member, how you garner support for your projects and make your time in office meaningful. Lastly, he will briefly discuss the effect of the “Brown Act’ on council members.

Van Gogh’s Untold Journey

July 22 Speaker: William J. Havlicek, Ph.D Coordinator: Janice Jeng Vincent Van Gogh’s short and tragic life has been examined through many lenses, but this presentation is an original and unique look at the inspiration and motivation detailed in Van Gogh’s astonishing letters, of which more than 900 exist. Supported by his book, Van Gogh’s Untold Journey, Dr. Havlicek will discuss the powerful influences of literary giants, Charles Dickens and Victor Hugo, upon Van Gogh’s paintings and his life. This lecture provides new insights into the artist’s true character that was nurtured by his abiding faith, the influence of his family, and the tender solicitude he felt for mankind.

The Kennedy Assassination in Literature and Film

August 5 Speaker: David Kelman, Assistant Professor of English and Comparative Literature Coordinator: Janice Jeng The assassination of President Kennedy continues to mystify and fascinate the public. Even though this event has been extensively investigated, the story of the assassination seems as enigmatic today as it did the day it occurred. This lecture will explore the way the enigmatic nature of this event has transformed it into something of a “literary” event. What does literature have to say about this historical event? How might fiction be an appropriate response to the unanswered questions that hover around the Kennedy assassination? We will discuss not only fiction about the assassination, but also fiction that even seems to foreshadow the event.

SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY Nanotechnology: The New Science of Small

Every Thursday • 10:00 am-11:50 am • KHS 199 June 5, 12, 19, 26 • July 3, 10, 17, 24, 31 • August 7 Come with us on a fantastic voyage into a domain that is nine orders of magnitude smaller than humans – comparable to the difference in scale between you and the sun. Nanotechnology in the 21st century may allow us to develop faster, smaller computers and smarter smartphones; to detect and treat diseases when only a few cells have gone wrong; and to capture the energy of the sun more efficiently and economically with nanoscale photocells and virusbuilt batteries. In this course, presented through DVD lectures from The Great Courses, an electrical engineer and a biochemist, professors Ted Sargent and Shana Kelley of the University of Toronto, will help us explore the “science of small.” After each lecture we’ll have a chance to discuss what we’ve learned. Coordinators: Susan Hanna and Rick Hearn

COMPUTER EDUCATION - REGISTRATIONS PROCEDURES

The OLLI-CSUF Computer Education program enables members to learn Macintosh and Windows computer applications as well as applications (apps) on mobile devices. Because of space limitations and the need to maintain hardware, software, and other equipment in the computer labs, these courses require registration and fees, which are administered through the OLLI-CSUF office. Computer classes utilize Lynda.com instructional videos that are available to OLLI members but you must be able to access the CSUF Student Portal. Please obtain your CWID (Campus Wide Identification) and PIN# from the OLLI Office prior to taking the WX1 classes (see below) or getting help to set up a student account during the free Open Labs on Fridays. This account is also necessary for you to use the Student-Secure Wireless network on campus. The Computer Education Committee (CEC) invites your participation in enriching our current and future curricula, especially if you would like to share your expertise. Please attend our monthly meetings on the first Tuesday of the month at 3:30 p.m. in Room 20. Chairperson: Joyce Ono

Bridge, Intermediate

Every Friday • 9:15 am - noon • Shapiro CD June 6, 13, 20, 27 • July 4 (Holiday, no class), 11, 18, 25 • August 1, 8 This class is for those interested in improving their bridge in a friendly, noncompetitive atmosphere. Some knowledge of bidding and play is desirable. Come join us, learn and have fun. Play of the hand hasn’t changed, but there’s been a bidding revolution. We’ll help you through that. You don’t need a partner, but it’s best to come early. Many are there by 9:00 am, and the room fills up quickly. Coordinator: Jack Wheatley

Bridge, Duplicate

Every Monday • 9:30 am - noon • Shapiro ABCD June 2, 9, 16, 23, 30 • July 7, 14, 21, 28 • August 4 Monday Morning Duplicate Bridge is the oldest CLE/OLLI continuous class. Death Café

Every Friday • 11:45 am - 1:15 pm • Room 19 June 6, 13, 20, 27 • July 4 (Holiday, no class), 11, 18, 25 • August 1, 8 The “Death Café” is a discussion group aimed at clarifying, philosophizing about, and opening our minds to a taboo subject. As an example, at a death café in St. Louis, one member asked the others to give a word that is conjured up by the term, “Death.” Suggestions included “Freedom,” “Grief,” “Finality,” “Transition,” “Relief,” and “Graduation.” Most of the forty some death cafes around the country meet over lunch, since eating serves as a good reminder that one is still alive. “Death is no more than passing from one room into another. But there’s a difference for me, you know. Because in that other room I shall be able to see.” Helen Keller Coordinators: Hank Smith and Tony Bell

Family History Club

Professional genealogists will teach classes covering topics that will assist members in collecting, authenticating, organizing and developing their own family history. Join us as we debate such topics as drug use in sports, famous athletes in the news, the latest trade talks of our local teams, performance of United States national teams in recent years and any variety of sports topics. It’s just like going to your favorite sports bar with your buddies—male and female—to “chew the fat” for a couple of hours about our favorite teams and players. So drop on by and join the fun! We play games of “Dealer’s Choice” and “Texas Hold ‘Em”. At the start of each semester, we will have beginners’ table(s) where the fundamentals of Poker can be learned at one’s own pace. There is a small charge each week, usually $1, for snacks, beverages, equipment and prizes. We do not gamble for money but do reward the player with the most poker chips at each table at the end of play with a small prize. Some members go out to dinner together after class. Hope to see you there. If you don’t know how to play, we’ll teach you how! Coordinators: Dave Musante, Rod Collier, Elaine Mitchell and Patti Chikahisa

Strategy of Scrabble

Special Events Registration Policy Who goes? How are they chosen? Special events are open to members only. Should an event not fill by the stated deadline, non-members may register with OLLI approval. Registration for a special event begins one week after the mailing of the Chronicle first announcing the event. Payments and coupons for a special event will be accepted at the time of registration. Registration forms will be entered on a first-come, first-served basis. Once an event is full, a waiting list will be created, also on a first-come, first-served basis. The office notifies only those individuals who could not be included in an event, and the office refunds their payments. If you want confirmation that you have been included on the list for an event, check the event lists posted on the bulletin board outside the office.
