Dear Freshmen CAMPUS Ryan Szamoszegi Contributor As I type this letter to you, a few days before graduating here at CSULA, I must say I still feel like a freshman myself. The time has gone by so quickly, and I have learned a lot of valuable life lessons. Your journey through your education is definitely something you will not forget, so savor each moment, even if you don’t think you want to! First of all, just to let you know, it took me SEVEN years to graduate with my undergrad. If you’re like me, you probably want to finish in four years, but

don't get frustrated if it take you longer. It's better to finish at a slow pace than to not finish at all! One thing I MUST tell you to remember is to keep the contacts you make here close to you. As you progress through the years, you will see the same people in all of your classes, so get to know them! The people that I now work with in the professional world are the quiet, weird and crazy people that sat next to me in class. Also, many jobs that I have worked were either directly from people I went to class with, or people that gave me a referral at some point.

Another thing is to keep a tight budget! I learned that the school supplies I needed could be bought online for WAY cheaper than normal pricing. Some great sites are Amazon, Ubid and Groupon. I personally have over 35 pairs of prescription glasses for $5 each at sites such as EyeBuyDirect. com and Googles4U.com. Like many other students, I had acne when I came in, but couldn’t afford to get topnotch skin care. I found a great online skin care company Z-Skin-Cosmetics.Com, which is 100% organic and all natural. Lastly, the most important tip that I can give you IS TO HAVE FUN! Take full advantage of this time in your life and find something you love doing! If you do, you’ll never

have to work another day in your life! You should look forward to going to class and the projects should come as play time, not work. I sincerely hope you guys enjoy your journey through your undergrad, and keep in

U

mind the tips I have laid down for you. Find what you love to do, the people you enjoy and do what makes you happy, you wont regret it! Sincerely, Ryan Szamosszegi

Tired of waiting for a Hello From the UT! computer? STUDENT LIFE

STUDENT LIFE

Norma Dominguez Contributor Have you ever walked into the school’s library and waited 10 minutes to use a computer? I don’t know about you guys but I feel the computer labs have been getting really full these past couple of days. There are many students who don’t like to carry their computers to campus, therefore have no option but to use the library’s computers. Students may also use campus computers when there isn’t access to one at home or have long gaps between classes so they have spare time to use one. Computers are a great resource to our campus, and some students argue that CSULA needs more. We should ask ourselves why aren’t there enough computers? Students may be familiar with limited computer locations. The most popular places for using computers are the Access Lab Link in the Student Union, the Library, and Salazar Hall. But, what most students don’t know is that there are addition-

al computers located with in the main buildings of King Hall, as well as the basement and third floor in Salazar Hall.

The lines for a computer in King Hall and Salazar Hall are shorter than the line in the library. So remember the next time you need a computer head to these “secret” locations. Besides computers, students often need to print. The library has a 15-minute speedy printing station. This, in my opinion, is a great strategy because students print at a faster pace and let’s be honest, it shouldn’t take more than 30 minutes to print a paper. Money is probably the biggest struggle students have when it comes to the printing machine. I dislike that the machine only accepts dollars to deposit money onto our ID card. Since the cost of printing is 10 cents per page, it would be better if students could pay 10 cents only on a page, rather than a complete dollar. To wrap things up, students can deal with the 15-minute printing station but what we can’t deal with is waiting for a computer to become available. Students can suggest ideas about enhancing our library by filling out the opinion survey located at the front desk.

Hello Baby Golden Eagles! Welcome to California State University, Los Angeles! Located only 6 miles from Downtown and surrounded by all the best aspects of Los Angeles, CSULA is a wonderful (and affordable!) educational institution with many opportunities right at its doorstep. I’ll stop with the sales pitch, but what I mean is true: CSULA is truly awesome. We have an incredibly diverse campus, meaning you’ll meet people from all kinds of backgrounds. We also have diverse organizations to match, from educational based clubs, to organizations based on similar interests, and of course, the college experience standard of sororities and fraternities! All the clubs and organizations on are a great way to get involved, so finding your niche will be like a piece of cake. There are always new buildings and programs to benefit students. In the last year alone, the campus saw the opening of Veterans Center in the Physical Science Building, the Television, Film and Media Studies Center, and the Dining Hall in Housing, to name a few! This year, the University Student Union Plaza is under construction to add an outdoor seating area, new stage lights, and better Wifi connectivity! For those that are commuting, CSULA is the ideal place to be! We’re next to all the freeways (which also means lots of traffic but hey, we’re in California) and we have our own Metrolink stop on the Brown Line.

And for those students from out of town, CSULA’s location allows you to go to places like Alhambra, Pasadena, and Downtown with a breeze. But like all awesome things, being at a university requires of all your best efforts. You’ve got to be on your A Game to hear about all the different events on and off campus while staying on top of your grades. College is the start of being on your own, and while that is terrifying, it’s also extremely liberating. Use it to your advantage. Here are a few random but extremely useful tips. Befriend your counselor because the guidance they give determines whether or not you are here for 4 years or 400 years. Pick up a Scantron and Blue Book for free at the ASI office on the second floor of the University Student Union (the U-SU) and check out their bulletin board for all sorts of events and deals. If you can only go to a few on campus events, go to the ones with free food. Download the CSULA Mobile App to see the line at Starbucks in real time. Remember the library closes at 10pm, except for Finals Week when it closes at midnight. And if you don’t want to pay for printing, come to the University Times office and use our printer for free. It’s in King Hall C3098 and while you stop by, come be involved with the newspaper! For more information, email us at CSULA.UT@ gmail.com. Hopefully your time at CSULA is as great as you make it out to be, and once again welcome!

Linking Your CSULA Email to Your Personal Email STUDENT LIFE

Ryan Szamosszegi Contributor If you’re like many students here on campus, you can’t get to your campus email or you didn’t even know you had one. And, if it’s your first time even logging onto it, it may seem pretty overwhelming to think about where to even start. But have no fear; we will walk you through the quick simple steps to get your email sent right to your own personal email! First, you need to log onto MyMail.CalStateLa.Edu with

your CIN login and password. And just a side note, that’s all it takes to read your emails. You can also access your email through MyCsula portal at mycsula.calstatela.edu. From here, you can set it so all the messages get forwarded to any personal email accounts you may have. To do this, once inside your email, go to the upper right hand corner of the window, next to the question mark, you should see the settings button [looks like this ]. Click it and select “set auto-

matic replies” which will bring you into a new window. In this new window, click on “inbox rules” and hit the + button to add a new rule. Select “create a new rule for arriving messages” and name it “forward CSULA email to my _______ account.” Now you’re almost done, click on “when messages arrive” and set it to “apply to all messages.” Directly under that, there is a second line reading “do the following” click it and go to “redirect the message to”. Under this sub menu, you

can select how you want it forwarded, to have it sent to your personal account, select “redirect the message to” and it will open a new window. Input your personal email[s] on the “to” line and hit okay. And now, all your emails should be coming into your personal email accounts, and copies of messages that you redirect or forward will remain in your CSULA mailbox. For more technical questions regarding CSULA, please contact CSULA Information Technology Services at helpdesk@calstatela.edu.

Her Campus at Cal State LA

STUDENT LIFE

Angeline Bernabe Staff Reporter After months of constant e-mails and phone interviews, a Her Campus Chapter at Cal State L.A. is finally launching in the Fall Quarter! Organized by yours truly and Yzzy Gonzalez, the co-managing editor of the fabulous, University Times, a Her Campus chapter will launch in the fall, and everyone is welcome to participate. So what exactly is Her Campus? Her Campus is regarded as the number one online community for college women in the form of an online magazine with content on Life, Career, and Style (just to name a few) that is written by college journalists all over the country. Her Campus was created by three Harvard Undergraduates, Stephanie Kaplan, Windsor Hanger, and Annie Wang, who proposed the Her Campus idea in Harvard College’s Business plan competition and

won in 2009.

ence.

Since creating the Her Campus site, the organization extends to over 230 campuses nationwide, along with several other chapters in seven countries – all created by college women who are regarded as “collegiettes,” or women who are on top of their game, to the Her Campus Community. According to the Her Campus Mission, Collegiettes are also known as “strategically career-minded, distinctly fashionable, socially connected, academically driven, and smartly health-conscious, who endeavors to get the most out of her college experience on every level.”

Once we found out how to create a chapter of Her Campus at our university, we seized the opportunity and embarked on a long process of filling out paper work, learning how to distinguish between Pacific Standard Time and Eastern Standard Time for several phone interviews, and constantly became in contact with people over at the Boston Headquarters who guided us along the way.

What attracted Yzzy and I to her campus was how the organization provided a sense of community among college women through their website. While Yzzy enjoyed the currency and interactive quality of the site and how relatable the articles were to anyone in college, I fell in love with the articles that Her Campus writers wrote about everything involving the college experi-

As members of the University Times who would like focus more on writing that isn’t so news-like and knowing more about other collegiettes at Cal State L.A., Yzzy and I are extending a warm welcome to anyone who would like to join us in launching Her Campus in the Fall! If you are interested in writing for Cal State L.A.’s Her Campus Chapter, feel free to email me at angelinebernabe@hercampus.com or email Yzzy at ysabelgonzalez@hercampus.com
