Infinte Eagles take a Porsche from gas to solar. Donis Solano Contributor

As Gilbert Lopez installs the checkered flooring of a basement lab, one thought never leaves him. “My motto is to be different than everyone else by thinking out of the box. The further from the box, the better,” Lopez explained. The new-checkered flooring along with the new automotive club that he runs at Cal State L.A. will be the home where he will be testing his ideas. Lopez, senior Technology and Engineering major is the founder and President of the Infinite Eagles. The Infinite Eagles is a new

automotive club at Cal State L.A. that is turning a 1974 Porsche 914 into an electric solar classic car. The goal of the club is to redesign the Porsche to include solar panels and a high-efficiency electric motor with hopes to one-day drag race the vehicle.

Lopez was given the car by Professor of Mechanical Engineering and Kinesiology, Samuel Landsberger. Professor Landsberger saw Lopez working on a go-kart that was abandoned eight years ago before approached Lopez and prompting him with a challenge: transforming a gas powered 1974 Porsche 914, unmoved for fifteen years, into an electric solar car. Lopez took up the opportunity and began to piece together the Infinite Eagles club. Landsberger then became the mentor and supervisor of the club. “It is a great learning experience for them, both inside and

outside of the classroom. I could not be more proud of these students, who are showing so much heart and so much initiative. I just have to keep out of the way, perhaps offer the slightest word of coaching from time to time, and watch them grow and spring forward, ” Landsberger said.

Vice President, Tommy Reyes, junior Technology major, said that he benefits from being in the club, “It’s a movement, man. It is really about the students empowering ourselves with the knowledge that we are going to get from learning about electric vehicles. Essentially that is the wave of the future.” The Infinite Eagles are currently working with Cal State L.A. Health and Safety Coordinator, Richard Brennan. Brennan has knowledge on safety protocols and teaches the leaders of the Infinite Eagles how to put into practice all of the safety protocols

involved in working with electric vehicles. During the process of renovating the car, students in the club will find alternative energy sources, disability assistive devices, and opportunity to design futuristic cars. The club still has a lot of room to grow. Currently, it has six members and looking to sprout into different fields of education.

The Infinite Eagles want to promote an atmosphere of creativity, alternative energies, and freedom to express ideas by building an out-of-the-ordinary Infinite Eagles Research Laboratory to spark Cal State L.A. pride. The club also wishes to develop assistive devices in cars for disabled individuals.

Athletics Shoots for Scholarship Pars Help fundraise for student-athletes! Fernando Hernandez

Contributor The date for this year’s Golden Eagle Golf Tournament has been set for Monday, May 4th. The event, which is held to raise money for Cal State L.A. student-athlete scholarships, will take place at the Friendly Hills Club in Whittier. The tournament will take place all day, starting with a Continental Breakfast at 8:30a.m. and concluding with a 5:00 p.m. dinner. With the price of tuition increasing gradually every year, the need for more fundraising has also increased. Iona Lofrano, third year volleyball player said, “As a student-athlete who has been on scholarship [for] the last three years, I have not only experienced, but also witnessed what this funding does. The ability to obtain an education from a California State University is an accomplishment in itself, but to be able to play the sport I love makes it the best experience I could imagine.”

For anyone interested in participating in the tournament, the Early Bird Registration Special is $275 and ends on Friday, April 24th. Afterwards, the entry fee goes up to $300 per entry. Each entry includes a Super ticket package that covers: green fees, golf cart, driving range balls, continental breakfast, lunch, dinner, and a great goodie bag. For those individuals who don’t like playing golf but still want to

show their support, there is alternative ways to help support. They can purchase a Tee Sign, which allows them to write a personal message or advertisement and can be displayed on a hole for $200. Another alternative is a Cart Sign, which also displays, a personal message or advertisement placed on a golf cart during the tournament. To register for the event, visit www.CSULAathletics.com/Golf.

In 1987, Congress declared March Women’s History Month and Cal State L.A. has been celebrating in a variety of ways. On Wednesday, March 11th, Dr. Leonor Xochitl Perez paid a visit to Cal State L.A. in order to celebrate this month in her own way. From East L.A. herself, Perez remembers playing Mariachi at Cal State L.A. in her younger years, therefore says she will always have a special place for the school in her heart. Perez is currently the curator of the Viva

el Mariachi Femenil Exhibit, which focuses on the importance of women in the Mariachi world. She also founded the Women’s Mariachi Foundation. In 2014, she was nominated as one of Hispanic Lifestyle’s 2014 Latina’s of Influence. During her presentation, Perez gave Cal State L.A. students a look into her own background before sharing the history of Mariachi. She began performing Mariachi in the 1970’s, playing for the first youth group in California. She even went on to play for two Presidential inaugural balls during her time performing. As she ventured out for undergrad and graduate school, Perez came back home and served as East Los Angeles College’s Dean for eight years. The exhibit Perez shared with students showcased the role of women in Mariachi from the

years 1903 to 2014. It featured photos and video of women past and present showing their musical skills. While showing students a slideshow, she also shared information about the upcoming concert that Viva el Mariachi Femenil will be holding. In order to prepare for the event, Perez did seventeen years of research in both Mexico and the United States, in order to accurately research the women responsible for the advancement of this cultural form. The big show will take place March 21st at the San Gabriel Mission Playhouse. Concertgoers can expect Mariachi women from New York, Texas, and Los Angeles. Dr. Perez is also in the process of writing a book based on the exhibit. Information about the exhibit, its locations, and Dr. Perez’s upcoming book, visit mariachiwomen.org.

Cal State L.A. Alum Goes Viral

From Golden Eagle to Youtube journalism sensation, check out Elie Seckbach's career.

At the time, Seckbach would follow them around talking about anything and everything. “I would just have conversations with Kobe Bryant and would ask how he felt about Britney Spears,” he said. The fans enjoyed seeing the human side of their favorite athletes and Elie Seckbach was the one who gave the fans that style other sports journalists didn’t have.

Guillermo Cabrera Contributor The Internet age has made many people successful. Through the different mediums that the Internet has to offer, some lucky few amass a following, instantly launching them into stardom. If you Google “Cal State L.A. Notable Alumni,” an impressive list of influential people of different backgrounds come up. Within the list, there are political leaders, scientists, prominent business people, actors, musicians, and even familiar educators. The Internet era we presently live in has added to that list of Cal State L.A. Notable Alumni a journalist to the ranks. Cal State L.A.’s very own Internet celebrity comes in the form of Elie Seckbach,

a product of the Broadcast Journalism program offered by the Television, Film and Media Studies Department. “I had been at CBS for three years when I went back to school to pursue a Bachelor’s degree at Cal State LA,” said Seckbach.

With a degree in hand, Seckbach took the tools he learned at Cal State L.A. and the “real world” experience he had and hit the news industry as a freelancer. Quickly, he found himself unemployed for nine months

so he decided to come back to school and pursue a Master’s degree. It quickly fell into the cracks; as he landed an internship at Fox, which eventually led to a job. “What many students don’t take advantage of in college is internships. They really give a student an opportunity to get their foot in the door,” he said. Seckbach obviously took his own advice and the opportunity at Fox began to open doors. With a love for sports, he again started to freelance while working at Fox

Cal State L.A. Student Qualifies for 2016 Olympic Nationals Loveren Dela Cruz has qualified to compete in nationals for the sport of badminton. Taylor Preza Contributor Watch out because Cal State L.A. may have a future Olympian on campus! Loveren Dela Cruz, a third year Applied Math major, has received an invitation to represent her off-campus badminton club at Nationals in Nebraska to qualify for the 2016 Olympics. Loveren is a badminton player for two clubs in the community, L.A. Woodshots and the Philippines Badminton Club of America. She has won two gold medals and a silver medal at the Cal State Games, which have qualified her to go to Nationals to compete, while representing her club L.A. Woodshots. Originally, her mother exposed her to the sport launching her to have a strong passion for it. She first laid her hands on a badminton racquet when she was just six years old. She used to have a court at her home, which allowed

and began to cover the Lakers games for companies such as AOL and L.A. Daily News. Seeing the way megastar athletes reacted to the common questions that sports reporters asked, he began developing his style. Soon his charisma and unusual questions attracted the likes of athletes such as Shaquille O’Neal and Kobe Bryant.

her to practice constantly. At eight years old, she started to compete for her school in the Philippines before she moved to the U.S. during her high school years. Loveren said, “My mom was a coach and would always bring me to school after class because she would train players for badminton. So in many ways, I grew up to love the sport. I pretty much grew up playing it.” In addition, Loveren admits that a constant winning streak made her even more passionate to pursue badminton.

She does know that making it to the next level is a big stretch. To qualify for the 2016 Olympics, Loveren needs to reach the A-level and place at least second in Singles and second in Doubles. However, her only goal as of now is to at least receive a medal in the C-level. So be on the look out for Loveren Dela Cruz on campus and wish her good luck, because she just might be a future Olympian representing Cal State L.A. She is scheduled to compete in Nebraska during the month of August.

“It was then when a friend of mine, a popular journalist in New York, introduced me to YouTube. At the time, I didn’t want to because it wasn’t the way I wanted to go. I wanted to go corporate and thought it wasn’t professional,” said Seckbach. However, when he finally gave it a try, his first video got him ten thousands views over night. He saw the potential for exposure in a different way than the traditional route. His videos became popular and the following started off slow, but then the unexpected soon happened for Seckbach. A

Filipino businessman told him about an unknown fighter named Manny Pacquiao. One day, he showed up to the Wild Card Gym in Hollywood and interviewed him. The next day, the YouTube video had over 300,000 views. Gradually, his focus moved from mostly NBA coverage to a boxing channel that to date has been viewed over 260 million times with over 130,000 subscribers. Using YouTube and the Internet as his platform, he was able to transform himself from a journalist trying to make it at a corporate news studio to a journalist who has complete control of everything he does and the content he creates. All while his following and videos gain thousands of views a day. That unknown fighter Seckbach interviewed has grown into a global icon and Elie was along for the ride. Reaching Seckbach as one of the most influential names in boxing all while not even having to lace up gloves. “If you work hard and want it bad, you will get to where you want to be,” he said. Elie Seckbach is the prime example that a traditional route of getting a career isn’t always the way to go. In this age, we all have more control of our futures than we’ve ever had before.

How Eating Can Make You Smarter Encorporate these foods in your diet to improve your test scores. Eric Jerigan Contributor It’s that time of the quarter again: finals are here! Like every other time these come around, students everywhere will be cramming to get the best grade possible to ensure a final grade to be proud of. They will be trying all sorts of tricks to study smarter or get the grade they want. However did you know that one way to help you retain all that information is to actually eat the right foods? We often stuff ourselves with anything when we are dealing with the stress of finals. Keep in mind there are many foods that can actually help to increase the overall health, memory, and activity of the brain. For example, by including some of these foods into your diet will surely help you prepare better for that ominous test, project, or paper.

Eggs are one of the most common breakfast foods, but did you know that they also help your brain? They are full of omega-3 fatty acids that help to protect your brain. They also contain large amounts of vitamin E. So, eating eggs will not only help with your brain health, but it will also help keep you from hitting emotional lows during the stressful mounts of finals week.

5

Berries are not only delicious, but they also are beneficial for your brain. Special compounds in strawberries will aid in building long-term memory strength. Raspberries and blueberries contain anthocyanin compounds. These protect brain neurons linked to memory, which means you will not have such a hard time retaining those obscure facts and details from the first week of the quarter. A recent British study by Dr. Jeremy Spencer of Reading University found that eating about a cup of blueberries a day could vastly improve memory in just a few months.

The classic saying goes, “An apple a day keeps the doctor away” probably rings true based on the huge benefits it does for our brains. This fruit contains something called catechins, which have been shown to protect against brain damaging chemicals common in everyday products. Make sure not skip the peel, though. That is where the catechins are readily found.

Even something sweet can help with your intelligence. Dark chocolate contains flavonol compounds, which help boost your circulatory system. In turn, creating a better blood flow to the brain. Surprisingly, snacking on some chocolate can actually make you smarter. A new study performed by Harvard researchers verified that drinking two cups of hot chocolate a day for thirty days is linked to improved blood flow to the brain and better scores on memory and thinking skill tests. Remember that eating the right foods will not instantly get you all A’s. You have to put in the effort and work in order to accomplish academic excellence.

Rest assured, though, that adding the right foods to your diet can help you think clearer and retain information better so that all your hard work will truly pay off.

Experience Disney’s exciting new shows from the Mouse himself starting spring break through summer.

Eric Jerigan Contributor Spring break is just around the corner, and before you know it, summer will be upon you! Anyone who lives in Los Angeles knows that you never have to look too far to find something fun or exciting to do here, especially during the warm seasons. Perhaps one of the most unique offerings Southern California has is the one and only Disneyland Resort. Not only do you get a discount on admission just for being a Southern California Resident, but you can also purchase discounted tickets right here on campus from the Associated Students Inc. (ASI). This year Disneyland Park will be rolling out its Diamond Celebration to celebrate 60 years of bringing magic to millions from all over the world. The festivities will begin Friday, May 22nd, but if you want to join in on the fun over spring break, Disney California Adventure Park just debuted its brand new “Frozen Fun” festival, which includes exclusive new show live shows and fun experiences. For the First Time in Forever – A Frozen Sing-Along Celebration takes place in the new elegant Crown Jewel Theater of Arendelle. It welcomes all park residents to join in on a fun and lively retelling of the history

of Arendelle, including a singa-long of the Frozen songs the world has fallen in love with. The Royal Historians of Arendelle will lead you through a comedic recap of the famous story with very special appearances from Anna, Kristoff, and the ice queen herself, Elsa. Anna and Elsa moved from Fantasyland to a brand new regal location within the Disney Animation Attraction at Disney California Adventure Park where you will be able to have personal interactions with everyone’s favorite sisters for Anna and Elsa’s Royal Welcome. As you walk into the Animation Courtyard, you are now greeted with music and scenes from the hit movie Frozen, and you have the rare opportunity at the Animation Academy to be taught by a Disney artist how to draw snowmen Olaf or Marshmallow. For Olaf’s Snow Fest, Stage 17 in Hollywood Land is now an immersive snow-filled winter wonderland that will transport you straight to Arendelle. You can zip down a giant snow slide or build your very own snowman in the massive snowy play area, enjoy musical performances from The Frolicking Fjords and The Tubadors, try one of the delicious themed treats, and even meet Olaf and give him his favorite thing in the whole world: a warm hug. With so many exciting opportuni-

ties, the whole family will surely melt with joy! Freeze the Night! A Family Dance Party takes place every night where the streets of Hollywood Land come to life with music, dancing, and all sorts of interactive fun! You’re invited to ‘chill out’ in an icy environment inspired by Frozen, complete with stunning light effects, frosty beverages for all ages, arctic decorations, and chilly photo locations. Once spring quarter is over and summer begins, The Diamond Celebration will already be in full swing. Sixty years ago, Walt Disney opened Disneyland Park and began a legacy of the highest quality entertainment in the world. This upcoming year will be a constant celebration of the positive change Walt Disney made in the world and the millions of lives his work has touched since that monumental day in 1955. To commemorate this colossal milestone, the resort will be unveiling three brand new shows full of light and wonder. At Disneyland Park, the new Paint the Night parade will bring some of the most technologically advanced floats, stunning costumes, beautiful special effects, memorable music, and energetic performances ever to be seen at the Disneyland Resort. This new, state-of-the-art nighttime parade

will take over Main Street U.S.A. with breathtaking color, exciting surprises, interactive elements, and over 1.5 million dazzling LED lights. Join your favorite Disney characters, such as Elsa, Rapunzel, and Ariel for an electrical parade of light that will be sure to leave a lasting impression. Be sure to stay after the parade at Disneyland Park for the new Disneyland Forever fireworks spectacular. It will be a sky-high celebration featuring glistening pyrotechnics and immersive projections that will transform Disneyland Park into another magical land right before your very eyes. Disneyland Forever takes you on a riveting, incredible journey like never before. This spectacle will include the largest installation of projection mapping technology in a Disney Park and will showcase two original songs, the theme song Live the Magic and the stirring closing song Kiss Goodnight, written by Disney Legend, Richard Sherman. To help celebrate its sister park’s anniversary, Disney California Adventure Park will present a special version of the popular World of Color light and water show. In World of Color – Celebrate! The Wonderful World of Walt Disney, Mickey Mouse will lead the way for a fun-filled and inspirational journey through the incomparable imagination of Walt Disney, exploring his de-

cades-long legacy of memorable, classic animated moments and his dream of Disneyland Park. Fans of the current World of Color will surely not be disappointed with the new take on the beloved show. In addition to these shows, the iconic Sleeping Beauty Castle in Disneyland Park and Carthay Circle Theatre in Disney California Adventure Park will sparkle, each with its own diamond medallion featuring the letter “D” for Walt Disney. The entire resort will also shine with special Diamond Celebration décor, and there will be plenty of new merchandise and delicious food treats. There are only a handful of Disney parks throughout the world, so take advantage of your proximity to the original park that started it all. Whether you go tomorrow or wait until the 60th festivities start, the Disneyland Resort provides a much needed escape from the daily student stresses. Go and be inspired by Walt Disney’s lasting impression he has left. His life shows that even the biggest and sometimes craziest dreams are possible with hard work and determination - a nice thought to remember when school becomes just too much. With everything that is coming up on Disneyland’s agenda over the next year, you don’t have to go far from home for a fun-filled spring break or summer vacation.

Escape From Los Angeles Looking for vacation packages at a college budget? From Palm Springs to Puerto Rico, we've got you covered. Tierra Booker Contributor With March halfway through the door, our 2nd favorite time of the year (trailing behind summer vacation) will be here before we know it. Cal State L.A.’s Spring Break 2015 will take place from March 22th to March 29th, so if travel plans are in your forecast, it’s time to start making arrangements! Whether you are looking for a tropical break, a local getaway, or a party-filled week, there is something for everyone. The top five most popular spring

break spots of 2015 are listed as: Las Vegas, Orlando, Cancun, Phoenix, and New York. While some of these places can be a bit pricey and overcrowded, there are some alternative locations. If you’re going for the tropical beach route, consider heading over to Puerto Rico. It has all the perks of traveling out of the country or to the Caribbean, without the passports and border control. Leaving out of Los Angeles, flights to Puerto Rico start around $477. When booking flights, remember that arriving and departing on a weekday vs. weekend will lower your airline costs. As always when traveling to a tropical location, it is wise to invest in an all-inclusive resort, with food and drinks readily available without a search. If you’re looking to stick to a budget, consider traveling with a group. A beachside 3-star hotel can cost you and a few friends as little as $98 per night.

With temperatures around the high 70’s going into the low 80’s, Palm Springs is an excellent option for relaxing combined with comfortable weather. It is far enough from L.A. that you feel you’ve gone on vacation, but close enough not to break the bank. Some of the most popular pastimes in Palm Springs typically include pool lounging, visiting the plethora of trendy food

The Good, the Bad and the Ugly of Spring Break! And on the fourth week of March, the Lord said, "Let them have Spring Break."

"It's 5:00 Somewhere"

George Rodriguez Contributor Spring Break! That magical time students look forward to every year. Unlike the holiday season where you spend your time with family opening presents and eating all in sight, spring break is the time to let loose and go crazy. As you book your flight and pack your bikini, chances are you can’t stop picturing those perfect beaches and ice cold margaritas waiting for you at your spring break destination. Did you ever consider though, you might be one cocktail away from a spring break nightmare? What about getting all of your cash stolen or worse, losing your passport or ID cards? How about attempting to get a sexy tan, but winding up looking like a full ready-to-eat lobster? Spring Break nightmares happen all the time and to anyone, but it is how we prepare for them that can make a whole world of difference. It is important to research the destination beforehand. Some questions to ask are: Is there a language barrier? What’s the money difference? How high is the crime rate? It is important to know all of

this information before you even get on that plane or in that car. If traveling with important documents like passports or identification cards, it is best to lock them up in the hotel or in the safe provided to you by hotel staff. Never go out carrying a passport because chances are you will lose it or have those documents stolen. Try to be smart about your consequences. Besides, if you lose your identification how would you get into all the clubs or bars? “It’s five o’clock somewhere” has become the unofficial motto of spring break. While drinking is among the most popular activities amongst spring breakers (because let’s face it, no one is going to tour all those museums), you need to remember to pace yourself. Your liver can process about one drink an hour. One drink equals 12 oz of regular beer, 5 oz of wine or a 1.5 oz shot of liquor. Drinking no faster than that rate and drinking plenty of water with and between drinks may help prevent a hang-

over. On top of that, no one wants to be the drunk friend that can’t handle their alcohol or the one friend at the club that can barely stand, but wants more alcohol. You really don’t want to be that person. When drinking, chances are your reasoning skills are hindered and your impulses are running higher than usual. Try to be clear with your decision-making and decide if your actions are something you consent to. Sober up and take those beer goggles off. If by any chance you do decide to engage in any sexual act, remember the golden rule: no glove, no love. Remember to be safe and always wear a condom. Always choose somewhere you feel safe and comfortable and always let someone know where you will be. Now put that suntan lotion on, take a shot or two, and get your Spring Break on! Have fun and enjoy yourself. Remember be safe and look out for one another.

options, and outlet shopping. The city holds the nickname Hollywood’s Playground, as it was once the hot spot for the entertainment industry’s biggest names. You can even choose to stay in a home once owned by musical legend Liberace. Majority of 3-star hotels in Palm Springs go for around $100-$150, and it’s within driving distance from L.A., so no need to look for plane

tickets.

Also for your spring break consideration, Carnival is now offering a 4-day cruise to the Mexican Riviera for just $203 per person, if you’re leaving from Los Angeles. If you’re a member of AAA and budgeting is a major concern, travel packages with payment options are available for purchase through the company.

Meaning in Movies The CCC brings underground issues come to light through films and discussions. Karla Grajeda Contributor For several years now Cal State L.A.’s Cross Cultural Center (CCC), along with the University-Student Union (U-SU), has hosted a weekly showing of independent film series. This series has become known as Independent Visions. Whether it is for a class requirement or because you are looking for something to do on a Thursday afternoon, every student should take the time to join the Cross Cultural Center in one of its weekly showings. Independent Visions series plays short independent films or documentaries directed by professional independent filmmakers. The films are about underrepresented cultural populations and other communities like LGBT, and with the use of art films that are not shown in the mainstream

11

media are highlighted and give awareness to various understated communities. Going to a showing is not only sitting down and watching a film; it’s giving students an enlightening experience to understand and relate to situations presented in such films. “One of our learning outcomes for our department is around the whole idea of the arts being a positive way of exploring communities,” said Frederick Smith, the CCC director. Smith also commented that the center has learned through Independent Visions that through art you could reach people in a positive way. In order for the center to reach students through art, staff and student prepare the films that are going to be shown a quarter ahead. Staff and students go through different catalogues, subscribe to different pages, and watch previews to decide what films are more convenient and knowledge enriching for students. Then they submit six to eight films to the U-SU who in turn will schedule the films in the U-SU Theatre, on Thursdays at 6:15p.m. Currently, Independent Visions has had many positives results and their biggest audience to date consisted of about 200 students. These results have not been only

because of previously shown films but also because of the discussions after a film. Once the film is over, a CCC staff member directs a discussion with the audience in which they get to ask and answer questions about their thoughts of the films. “Anyone who watches films they are kind of in their heads… this is an opportunity to Cal State L.A students to connect with each other, have an intellectual back and forth around what they learned and what they experience,” said Smith. This winter quarter, the Independent Visions list consisted of six films, the last one The Case Against 8, was played on Thursday, February 26th. The first film titled Why We Laugh was an account of Black comedians in the United States, and also a follow up Q&A conversation with the author Darryl Littleton. Other films also played were After Til-

ler, Fixed- The Science/Fiction of Human Enhancement, The Bro Code, and The Pruitt-Igoe Myth. After Tiller is a story that shows the unfolding stories of doctors in Kansas that practice third-semester abortions to women who need them. Fixed is also a scientific film that talks about the researchers in the world trying to fix or enhance the human body. But Bro Code is completely different, this film challenges men to question fixed masculinity ideas by examining elements of male culture and the manner the media influences such behavior. Lastly, The Pruitt-Igoe Myth is a film documenting the history of Pruitt-Igoe, a 1972 housing project that marked the end of families that lived in Ferguson, Missouri. These films are only the ones playing during the winter quarter by Independent Visions, but there are still more to come that

have been played throughout the years. Some other films from Independent Visions are Smuggled, Big Gay Love, How to Lose Your Virginity, and Maria in Nobody’s Land. These films are all unique in their own way, but most importantly they follow up with the Cross Cultural Center’s ideal of presenting students with stories from underrepresented groups. For those who missed these past films past films, start scheduling for the spring quarter. The first film playing for spring starts on April 2nd, with Independent Visions presenting Dear White People. The other five films will we played as follows: Two- Sided Story on April 23rd; Yo Soy Chicano, April 30th; The Mask You Live In, May 7th; Mulberry Child – A Memoir of China, May 21st and on May 28th Screaming Queens: The Riots At the Compton’s Cafeteria.

Surviving on a College Student Budget Sabrina Sarmiento Contributor A common phrase amongst college students is “I am a broke college student. It does not come as a surprise why college students

are always low on money. Many students do not get financial support from their parents and are forced to work throughout college. Some students normally have minimum wage jobs that barely help them get by. To combat that, here are some tips on surviving as a college student:

Create a budget: The most important thing to do as a student on a budget is to create a plan or a detailed list of income and bills. The most helpful tool is to create a budget spreadsheet through Excel. It not only helps keep bills organized, but it also can total the amount just with a press of a button.

Using other forms of transportation: Owning and driving a vehicle can be pricey. Not only is there car insurance, gas and even car payments, it’s important to remember to put aside money for registration fees and upkeep on the vehicle. Having a car for college students is often times more of burden financially than helpful. Students should consider using other forms of transportation. For example, carpooling, biking, skateboarding, taking the bus or Metro are alternatives that can cut down on spending. Cooking vs. eating out: College students who are on the go find eating out easier than cooking. Although it can be quick to pick up food, for students who are on a budget eating out can add up. Most college students spend money on eating out more than most expenses. If students shop smart at the grocery store, their groceries can help them save money while still keeping them fed and satisfied.

Wants vs. needs: If students can master down this tip getting through college, life will be so much easier. Many adults still do not know how to separate their wants from their needs causing them to spend money they do not need. Sometimes these purchases can lead to debt, especially when people spend more than they earn. If college students can manage to distinguish the difference between the two, they will be setting themselves on the right track to financial success.

Beauty on a Budget Make up your budget with innovative products.

13

them.

Nancy Aguilar Contributor Keeping a budget as a college student is crucial. Just because you don’t have much cash doesn’t mean you have to skip over the beauty essentials. There are a certain number of beauty basics that everyone needs in their regimen. Most of these can be purchased for cheaper prices at the drugstore. You’ll find good products, and great prices with leftover money for textbooks and other college necessities. Professional makeup artist Diana Lomelin said, “In makeup there are few essentials any woman should have in their bag. I always suggest to have a good moisturizer, mascara, foundation, a setting powder, brow gel, a natural lipstick, or lip gloss and blush.” Of course, there are other products that aren’t necessary, but the beauty savvy can’t live without

College is about studying late hours, and dark circles tend to appear under the eye during this time. As a professional makeup artist who works with celebrities Lomelin said, “One of my all time favorite concealer is not only amazing, but it’s also inexpensive! Maybelline Age Rewind is amazing.” She adds, “It covers your dark circles and it does not crease! It is very lightweight but it’s also full coverage, is also treats any fine lines you may have.” Now that the concealer is se over those problematic dark circles, the next step to flawless skin is the foundation. Foundation is key because your skin will either look blemish-free or cakey. “I love getting my makeup done, I am trying to find a good foundation, but I don’t want to spend too much money,” said Luz Gonzalez, student at CSULA. Every individual has certain skin type, look for products that will help problem zones, or don’t irritate your skin. “There are two drugstore foundations I absolutely love, one is Revlon colorstay foundation is

for oily, normal and dry skin, my second favorite is Neutrogena Healthy skin is sheer and buildable,” Said Lomelin. Flawless skin? Check. Onto the eyelids and complimentary colors for your skin. One of the rules that every beauty product consumer should follow is don’t go out and buy bright eyeshadow or blush if it doesn’t suit your skin or hair color. However, don’t try to limit yourself to safe colors, try to experiment! “I always tried different looks, I love the way Jennifer Lopez looked at the Oscars I would like to know how to strike that look,” said Jessica Martinez, Cal State L.A. student.

Small details like mascara and eyelashes will really make your eyes pop. If you feel like your eyes are small-looking and want to make them look bigger, use false lashes that flare out towards the outer eye. Try to focus on looking natural, not too full and not too small. “False lashes, they add drama and make you look more fancy, lashes just give you an extra pop and all the celebrities on the red carpet wear them,” said Lomelin. Another important part of your face is your eyebrows. “Learn how to groom them, never ever over pluck, using a powder or pencil will get you the most, but

if you already have full brows just use a clear or colored brow gel,” said Make-up artist Diana Lomelin.

When choosing a color for your brows, make sure to go two shades lighter than your hair color and stay away from any color that has red undertone. Make a list of things you need, and make sure you stick to it don’t buy stuff just to buy stick to a beauty budget. Remember not to get too caught up in your beauty regimen and don’t buy something just because it’s cheap. Make sure you need it, it suits you, and it doesn’t look cakey or overlayered.

Whip Your Closet Into Shape The simplest ways to spring-clean your closet the right way. clothes in the tossed, donated, and sold boxes, put them aside and focus on organizing what you have left. If you throw things in again, your closet is still a mess, and the chances of you wearing everything you kept will be low. By allowing space and visibility in the closet, you are more likely to wear more of them. What may also help to tidy up your closet is throwing out the wire and thick plastic hangers, and investing in sturdy thin hangers. These hangers will save space for your closet and perhaps give it ample areas for a few new pieces as well. Winter coats will now belong in the back, and make sure to hang your clothes by type: bottoms with bottoms, tops with tops, dresses with dresses, etc. Go a step further and separate each type by color: whites, darks, and colors. If it helps, buy organizers to place miscellaneous items like scarves, belts, jewelry, etc.

Roxana Hernandez Columnist Spring is coming and after a hectic time with finals you’ve noticed that your closet is a mess. It’s time to cleanse, organize, and freshen up your closet without feeling overwhelmed by the idea of such daunting task. Although pool parties, travel trips, and theme parks await you, don’t forget that you want to look radiant while doing these fun-filled activities. Here are some things to consider while spring-cleaning your way into a fun, fresh, and new start.

Set the Mood

A key step to getting through spring-cleaning your closet is to create a sweet playlist. Setting an environment that gets you excited and keeps your spirits high is a must in order to survive all the labor that cleaning out your closet demands. To energize, consider hitting play on Pandora’s Spring Break Hits, but if you want to calmly undertake this task go for some serene and calm music like John Mayer or Ed Sheeran playlists. To set the mood, it is important to open your curtains, blinds, or windows to let some light and fresh air in. Lastly, make sure you wear comfortable clothes—don’t underestimate how active you’ll be.

Squeaky Clean

Toss-Donate-Sell

You are cleaning up a mess of a closet, and starting without a plan will only overwhelm you more. Set aside bags or boxes titled “toss,” “donate,” or “sell.” What you no longer want might not have to be thrown out, and what you feel attached to but know you’ll never wear, another person would be delighted to have. Many people impulsively buy all the time, and if you look close enough, you have a few articles of clothing with a price tag still on it. Be honest with yourself and ask yourself if you will ever wear it. If you think you won’t be using these clothes anytime soon, you can sell your unused clothes and make some money at the same time. For those clothes that are stained, ripped, or shrunk you should probably toss it aside and send over to a recycling center.

Divide and Conquer

Rather than literally taking everything off the racks of your

closet, prioritize what subject to lay out. Many times we overwhelm ourselves by taking all the clothes out and then getting tired and dumping it all back in—with no real progress made. What can you do? Segment out your clothes. For instance, choose pants only, and focus on that first. Once you are done, move on to the next type of clothes. Looking at all your pants once, or all your sweaters at once really places some reflection. ‘How could I have afforded so many of these?’ ‘What was I thinking when I bought this?’ ‘These two are exactly the same, why do I have two of them?’ it really makes you

reflect on your spending habits. On the other hand, you may realize that you might really need to reinvent your closet. You’ll find yourself face to face with outdated clothes and things you never wear.

The One-Year Rule

If all else fails and you cannot decide whether something is sentimental for you or not, or if something is trendy or not, wearable or not, it is time to use the golden rule in closet cleaning: The One-Year Rule. If you haven’t worn it in a year, what makes you think you’re going to wear it now? By keeping all these clothes

in your closet while shopping for more, you are only hoarding things you will probably never wear. Let your experience dictate your actions. Maybe you would actually wear something, but you never do because the way it looks in the hanger is adorable, and the way it looks in your body is atrocious. That may also be a sign to let it go. Of course, this is not to say you have to throw away the 2010 high school sweater out you haven’t worn since then; some things are worth keeping if it contains sentimental value.

Organize

Once you have placed your

The number one cleaning problem with closets is that they humidify over the course of the month. With such a constant problem with many closets, the best solutions found are to place chalk in the closet. Yes, that’s right! Chalk absorbs the moisture that closets may built up and protect it from further humidity. At the same time while getting rid of humidity, you are getting rid of the humid odor as well. Wrap a bulk of chalk to a ribbon and hang it in your closet. Killing two birds with one stone, chalk is the ultimate closet cleaner. Another tip to help keep your closet clean is moving your shoes or shoe rack outside the closet and onto another area. The odor they produce may affect the way your clothes smell too, so don’t take your chances and place your shoe rack on another tidy space.

Treat Yourself

Having completed a successful spring-cleaning inside of your closet, you deserve a little reward. You’ve seen what you’ve thrown out, you’ve reflected on your spending, and now you know exactly what you need. Take some time to purchase some chic new clothes, and freshen up your spring!

Happy Spring Cleaning Everyone!

Ultimate LA: Little Tokyo

27th, and the Hello! Exploring the Supercute World of Hello Kitty exhibit, highlighting the history of everyone’s favorite cartoon cat that will run through the end of May.

Explore a different side of L.A. that has yet to disappoint, from Japanese-style eateries to eccentric bowling. Lauren Walther Contributor Looking for a place to explore close to campus? A unique neighborhood located conveniently close to Cal State L.A. is Little Tokyo in the heart of downtown L.A., approximately ten minutes from campus.

On 1st and Central, you can visit the Japanese American National Museum, with carefully

curated collections of ancient art and artifacts, as well as exhibits from World War II bombings and

internment camps. The museum hosts the annual Asians on Film Festival the weekend of March

For a unique lunch experience outside of Japan, try Mr. Pizza across the street from the museum. If Italians think Americans are doing unholy things to pizza for adding pineapple or ham, that’s nothing compared to Mr. Pizza Japanese-style pizza. No toppings are off-limits: things like potatoes, broccoli, shrimp, corn, alfredo sauce, sour cream, Korean beef bulgogi, and sirloin steak are just a few of the things you can throw on top of a regular or sweet potato crust. In Weller Court Plaza on 2nd Street and San Pedro Street is another cluster of Japanese restaurants and shops, with the massive Kinokuniya Bookstore on the top floor. Featuring a huge variety of imported books, magazines, comics, records, DVDs, and the cutest school supplies and other accessories you didn’t know you needed, this is a great place to indulge your inner kid. For some adult fun, make sure to head to the Little Tokyo Galleria Market, a mall on Alameda with a free parking structure. At XLanes LA, you’ll find bowling under black-lights with old-school jams, a huge arcade, karaoke, billiards, and a full bar; open until 2a.m. on weekends. For a more relaxed bar with gourmet Asian-inspired pub dishes, go to Far Bar on 1st street next to the museum. Look for the alleyway between two buildings, lit up with a string of white Christmas lights. It will lead you to a charming patio and a cozy indoor bar with a great selection of Japanese beers and whiskeys. Try the chocolate cake shot: the blend of liqueurs followed by a bite of sugar coated lemon is deceivingly smooth and delicious, no chaser required! A few doors down from Far Bar is a tiny and popular ramen restaurant Daikokuya, open late on weekends until 1a.m. This isn’t your normal dorm room Top Ramen; this is the real deal served in a rich pork broth with all the fixings: a soft-boiled egg, sliced pork belly, bamboo shoots, green onions and bean sprouts. Go for a ramen combo with their amazingly tender fried rice, or their killer crispy chicken teriyaki, covered with sticky and sweet teriyaki sauce on perfect sticky rice. Either option is a great way to balance out the great drinks you’ll find in this charming corner of L.A.
