5 Pieces of Essential Advice for New Golden Eagles Tips to make your college experience worthwhile. Angeline Bernabe Staff Reporter

When I first started college four years ago, I thought the experience would be similar to the one Rory Gilmore had at Yale in the show, Gilmore Girls. Mainly because Rory was an aspiring journalist like me, and made her college years memorable by working as a student reporter for the Yale Daily News. As a shy teenager who didn’t care much for high school, I remember telling myself that I’d

make up for those lost years by having the same experience Rory did and be as outgoing as I could possibly be to have the best time of my life. Flash forward four years later with a changed attitude, and I can attest that college has honestly been the best years of my life so far (even if it didn’t exactly turn out the same way as Rory Gilmore’s experience). While I am in no means responsible for giving the greatest advice, I think I’ve gotten the best recipe down to make your college experience at Cal State L.A. the best years of your life. Here’s a list to help you make your Golden Eagle journey worthwhile: 1. Be Outgoing – Cal State L.A. has a reputation for not being the best when it comes to student involvement, mainly because it’s a big commuter campus, but being involved greatly shaped my college experience. I made the greatest friends in the organizations I

joined, and I was never bored because I was always so involved. If you’re wondering which organization to join, visit the Center for Student Involvement, or the department of which your major is located. 2. Consider an On-Campus Job – Working on campus helped me out so much as a student. Between taking a full course-load each quarter and being involved in numerous activities, an oncampus job was so convenient. To work on campus, visit the Career Center for information about job listings.

and set money aside for food, rent, and other essentials.

new experiences in college and try not to limit yourself.

4. Don’t Limit Yourself – When I first started college, I really wanted to pursue an art career. I wanted to paint masterpieces and own a gallery, and felt that nothing outside of those dreams existed. After taking some intro courses, I became inspired and found new things I became interested in. Always be open to

5. Have Fun – Between studying and working, make sure to set time aside to have fun! There are so many fun things to do near campus, that it’s really hard to get bored during your time here at Cal State L.A. Make new friends, and make the best memories.

Lets look at some statistics!

3. Manage Your Time (and Money) – I cannot stress this enough. If I had a chance to go back to my first year of college, I’d keep to-do lists that are planned to the last second of each day, so I’d have time set aside for working out, studying, and spending time with friends and family. In addition, managing money is probably the most important thing you can do as a college student. Create a budget

6 Cool Things that Cal State L.A. Has But only if you are looking for great opportunities! Yzzy Gonzalez Editor-in-Chief

College may seem like a pretty standard place. You’ve got your classrooms, teachers, pencils, pens. Luckily Cal State L.A., like many great places, has lots of hidden secrets that are awaiting to be discovered. -NASA (National Aeronautics and Space Administration) helped establish a University Research Center (URC) on campus! The URC is known as SPACE, which stands for Structures, Propulsion, and Control Engineering. Research and development takes place in a myriad of topics, from Intelligent Flight Control to Space Telescope Technology. -Have you heard of a hydrogen station? Neither has most of the general public. Cal State L.A. changed the game when they became the first hydrogen station in the nation to sell hydrogen fuel to the public, by the kilogram. The Hydrogen Research and Fueling Facility offers free tours to those that are interested in learning more. -If you like to jam out, Aerie Records has you covered. The

record label is the College of Arts and Letters’ own production and recently released their first recording. The album features the Afro Latin Ensemble under the direction of Paul De Castro. -For those interested in social work, Cal State L.A. is home to the Residential Simulation Lab. Used for child welfare education, nursing, and criminal justice, the Lab is a large room where real world scenarios are performed. Students are exposed to what they may experience once they graduate, whether that be client engagement or problem solving. -Men’s soccer is on their A game. No, really! The team had their longest postseason run last year and were crowned National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division II West Region champions. And the women’s soccer team is as equally strong! The spectacular year included

winning the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) regular season title, along with the CCAA tournament title. If there is a game you want to catch next year, it’s definitely a soccer match! -Cal State L.A. definitely has notable alumni. Tennis star Billie Jean King graced our campus, along with activist Sal Castro. James A. Bell, current CFO of the Boeing Company, graduated in 1997 and Barry Gordon, the former president of the Screen Actors Guild, is also a professor on campus for the departments of Political Science and Television, Film and Media. Those are only a few of the cool things Cal State L.A. has to offer! Be sure to explore the campus and find your own exciting opportunities. You’ll never know exactly what you’ll discover.

If you’re stuck on campus for the summer or just taking a peek before the fall quarter, explore Cal State L.A. through the lens of a third year student. Normally, it is traditional to bombard you with little hacks of our University but let’s indulge in what the University has to offer regarding academics, clubs and orgs and social life. Our campus has been going through a bit of revitalization with the induction of President William Covino. He has highlighted the wonderful qualities of Cal State L.A. including its diversity and commitment to service learning. While we are currently running on the quarter system, the University wants you not to forget (with their endless emails) that by 2016

Cal State L.A. will be on the semester schedule. If you haven’t chosen your major or thinking of changing it, (because you might) there are eight exceptional colleges to choose from. However, if you are looking for something distinguished, apply for the Honors College. If you are a high achiever and looking for a challenge, join the Honors College to prepare you for graduate school and the real world. The College provides thought-provoking courses that focus on the history of the greater Los Angeles area and put the global issues that affect us all into context. You can join regardless of major. The application is on the GET website or you can find additional information in King Hall D1045. As you will see later on, this campus is regarded as a commuter school. You have students quickly coming in and quickly going out. However, to truly be a part of the Cal State community, partake in the countless clubs and organizations the campus offers. There are fraternities/sororities, academic orgs, service orgs and

many, many more. It is no secret that the campus has a slow social beat. There are minor events that turn out to be fun and amazing but there is always the problem where not enough students show up. In fact, some events get an embarrassingly low turnout. To fix this problem, many clubs/orgs have tried innovative new techniques to get students attention. Another underrated gimmick the student population doesn’t know of is the great artwork and performances that are brought by the Luckman Fine Arts Complex. They even offer students a discounted fee. Some of the amazing performances have been the alternative Mexican band Kinky and an Andy Warhol gallery of photography. Be sure to take advantage of this offer and be on the look out for the next installment. In a few words, this is just some of what the campus has to offer. You’ll soon realize the student community is an exciting and amazing experience that needs to be experienced one day at a time.

Your Guide to College Wardrobe Essentials

Don’t leave behind the most important pieces of your closet; these will be your lifesavers throughout your college career. Roxana Hernandez COLUMNIST

GIRLS

4. Navy Suit You have probably been told multiple times to have a black suit in the back of your closet for special occasions. For now, forget the black and go buy the navy blue. The navy blue suit is not only a classic but also versatile. It can be casual and it can be dressy, it flatters any skin tone, and it’s practically central to any shirt/tie combination.

1. Little Black Dress This item is not only a staple for your college girl closet, but a life staple in general. A classic piece is easy to wear and easy to look good in. The LBD could be worn casual with a colored cardigan and nice oxford slip-ons, or worn dressy with some nude pumps and a statement necklace. 2. White V Neck T-Shirt The classic t-shirt with a little twist on the neckline will function well with almost anything you bring on your suitcase. Pair with some jeans and some chucks for casualwear or with a cardigan and a skater skirt for dressy outlook-the options are endless.

5. Solid Color Hoodie Southern California is pretty warm most of the time, but there are days where the wind circles and the rain pours. A sweatshirt is essential for college as you’ll use it for those late nights at the library, or when your roommates aren’t AC shy. It warms you up and is always handy to have one at hand.

3. Trench Coat Trench coats are timeless and lighter than wool coats. It rarely rains in L.A., and when it does you want to make sure you are prepared. Keep the colors solids and the textures simple and you’ve got yourself a very chic layer.

6. Brown Leather Dress Shoes That’s right! The lighter the brown the better it is, in fact brown shoes look best with navy suits and navy suits look good with almost any shirt. The key here is to make the item versatile. In this case, brown shoes are the versatile option.

4. Skinny Pants Skinnies are a great piece to have in your closet, mainly because you probably already do. Having darker skinny jeans would be a better option as the pant will retain the color better after every wash. Of course, it helps that darker shades are more slimming. 5. Sunglasses If you live in Los Angeles you are going to need a good pair of sunnies. The styles are endless and colors are countless. 6. Ballet Flats I bet you thought I’d say to bring your Chucks or slip on Vans, but ballet flats will be your best choice. These can be comfortable and can either be casual or dressy, and most importantly quick and easy to slip on. 7. Nude Heels You really don’t need a different heel for every dress you own. The most important heel you can invest on is the nude heel because they nearly go well with anything. Make sure that they fit you well, that they

a r e comfortable for the shape of your feet, and comfortably high as well. 8. Yoga Pants Yoga pants have for the past years become huge. So many wear them now to just about anywhere. You could find girls going into class, the gym, and the laundry with them. They are comfy; you are going to want to bring them with you everywhere.

GUYS 1. Fitting Jeans Just like girls, jeans for men are a must. Everyone needs them, especially in college. Please be sure that you have at least one pair that fit you very well: no rips, no tears, and no light colors. Don’t be afraid to spend a little extra on these wardrobe worthy jeans. 2. White T-Shirt Again, multiple white shirts should probably be in your

7. Basketball Shorts Whether you want to get comfortable and play some video games in your living room, or go outside to play basketball with your buddies, basketball shorts will be your friend. Cal State L.A. Hacks The secrets you need to get the most out of your college experience. Crystal Zahler Contributor

Get ready for the time of your life! College is the time to make new memories, experience new things, and especially learn about your campus. Here are some tips to keep your experience a positive and fun one. 1. Parking is one of the highest complaints, but that is because everyone is trying to park in the same places all at the same time. When the lines for close parking are too crazy, your best bet is to park at Lot 7 near the dorms. Yes, students will have to climb the famous “Cardiac Hill,” but at least it’ll be a great workout and you’ll find empty parking spaces! 2. If Cardiac Hill isn’t enough for some and they are looking for more action, the Xtreme Fitness Center is the place to go. They

have different types of fitness classes quarterly, beginning on the second week of the quarter. There is paperwork that needs to be filled out, but it is rather quick and simple. Key thing to remember about the Xtreme Fitness Center is that everyone needs to bring in their towel or they are not allowed inside. 3. Although we all like getting a good sweat in, school is about the studying. The Confucius statue in between the Music building and the UniversityStudent Union is not only a peaceful and relaxing place to study, but it is known to be good luck. The legend is that if you study for an upcoming test within the area immediately surrounding Confucius will help you do better on your exam. So this should be every student’s number one study spot. 4. Speaking of studying, the Annex Lab is open 24 hours and is located right next to Salazar Hall. It is a complete computer lab with printers, readily available to students. Just keep in mind that since the lab is open 24 hours, there are safety precautions. Students need their Cal State L.A. student ID in order to access the lab between

7

the hours of 10 p.m. and 8 a.m. 5. Now for the most crucial part of being in college: the food. On campus we have the Food Court, which has a variety of places. Though as an insider, the best recommendation if a student is looking for a unique bite to eat, check the King Hall walkway. On most days, the King Hall walkway has different clubs hosting fundraisers for their clubs or organizations. Options usually include Costco pizza, baked goods from Porto’s Bakery, Krispy Kreme donuts, and homemade nachos. This way, hunger will be satisfied and students can help out their fellow classmates. 6. Last but definitely not least, we have the University Cafe. This spot is slightly hidden towards the back of the Golden Eagle Building and separate from the Food Court, but is a little more upscale than other foodie spots on campus. All ages are welcome there, but students that are over 21 are able to drink. It’s the only place on campus where alcohol is sold. If you need a little pick me up after an intense morning class, you can stop by and grab a bite for lunch and sip on an ice-cold beer.
