CSUN Circle K’s Executive Board members were graciously invited by our current faculty advisor, Margo Dutton, who was invited by her friend and fellow Kiwanian, Jeff Dimsdale, to his esteemed Board Training for Magic Kingdom Division. Mr. Dimsdale is Orange Coast College’s past Dean of Students and current Kiwanis Advisor to the same school, and he has an extensive knowledge on how to be a leader. Not only this, he is also a great teacher. I, myself, had the immense pleasure of learning from him and the Circle K members who participated. I am positive my fellow board members feel the same. We learned skills such as interview skills, team building, how to run general and board meetings effectively, and Mr. Dimsdale’s own, S.M.A.R.T.E.S.T. Goals. We all benefitted from this training, so to those thinking of running for board next year, you will get to do this as well. This was a very fun event and I would like to thank both Margo, and Mr. Dimsdale for having us.

The weekend after Board Training was Spring Training Conference (STC) South, again at Orange Coast College. This time, members and board members alike could attend the event. The few who signed up got to go to workshops hosted by other Circle K’ers from all over Southern California and Nevada (Hawaii, unfortunately, could not make the event). The workshops that I, myself, attended mostly had to do with my position as President. I went to the Executive Board Workshop first, where our District Governor, Tae Hyun Lim; our District Treasurer, Victoria Ortiz; our District Secretary, Paula Le; and past D-Gov, Byron Montilla explained to us the duties, the struggles and how to make our year the best, as executive board. Next, I went to the President’s Workshop, where I met half of the District’s Presidents (the other half would attend STC North). We shared our goals, our “moments”—why and when we decided to become president—and what we want to see change and it was very encouraging and inspiring to share. I was able to meet and become friends with so many other Presidents and participate in a really awesome trust exercise. The next workshop that I went to was the Fundraising Panel, where I learned how to host a fundraiser and the different types of fundraisers. Also about which fundraisers worked best for other clubs. After this workshop, came the Metro Divisional Council Meeting (DCM), where we discussed updates from the division, district and individual clubs. For lunch, I was very grateful for the chicken Caesar salad that was provided for me by our DGov and STC South Chair, Tae (since the pizza, being gluten, is a no-no for my overly paranoid immune system). After lunch, I went to a workshop called #365HappyDays. I made a new friend from UCLA, at the session, her name is Alondra. In the workshop we mostly just had fun learning the Electric Slide and interviewing our partners, asking questions like, “Who’s your celebrity crush?” (Tom Felton), “If you got a fully paid trip to anywhere, where do you want to go?” (New Orleans, or Stonehenge), or even “What super power would you want?” (Teleportation, or control of electricity). The last workshop that I went to was called Small/New Clubs Panel, and since CSUN falls roughly under both categories, I wanted to know the tips and tricks that others had to make things better for you all. This was a very beneficial workshop and I had many of my questions answered and even learned that there are many other schools who have struggled through the same struggles that we have, being small and new. I very much enjoyed this Training Conference, I do think that they were very prepared and it was much better than last year’s STC South. I encourage more members to go next year to Spring Training Conference, and I look forward to attending Fall Training Conference!

My experience of the CKI Bi-Annual was amusing and tiring because we all got to spend the first day of summer together and enjoy the beautiful view and weather. I almost forgot how much fun it is going hiking into the mountains and hanging out with a couple of friends. At first it was scary because we were trying not to slip and fall. But it was good that we all were watching each other and had each other backs. Then we went to another trail, which made it even more tiring and fun. And somehow we all ended up having a craving for Taco Bell. The fun part of the hike was that we played a game in which each person had a word to say to complete a phrase. The point of this game was that we all knew where each other was so that we would never get separated from others. Overall, the Bi-Annual Hike was successful and fun. I hope next year, more people will come to the event so that we can play the game with a bigger group.

My experience at ECC’s EOTY Banquet was something I would call “magical”. This banquet brought me many wonderful experiences and it really felt like prom. It was magical because I enjoyed everything from the talent acts all the way to the prom dance. I never attended prom and I kind of had a glimpse of how high school prom would have been. What I enjoyed more than anything was the food that they served: chicken alfredo, garlic bread, and salad. I loved the dessert that they provided: ice cream with honey on top, chocolate strawberries, and yummy cupcakes and cookies. The night ended with a bang with the king and queen announced and they started grabbing people to join them on stage to dance. Many people danced or took wonderful pictures in the creative and amazing photo booth. As a guest from CSUN, I enjoyed this wonderful banquet as so many things made me smile. If you did not attend this banquet you missed out on all the action and fun.
