Season Preview An experienced group returns as Charleston Southern

volleyball looks ahead to the 2013 season under the direction of first year Head Coach Christine Mooberry. Led by a quartet of seniors in Kayla Klinger, Laura Grace Swindler, Maggie Murphy and Erin LaVenice, the Buccaneers look to build off of last season’s Big South tournament berth and make it back to the postseason. “Our seniors bring a great amount of leadership, experience, and energy to the court,” said Mooberry on the return of four strong seniors. “Kayla’s experience shows the minute she hits the court, while LG and Maggie both bring a great amount of energy, determination and passion to our defensive game. They embody the idea of relentless pursuit that we want to see on our defense. Erin adds the height we need in the front row and moves very well across the net.” Charleston Southern was selected ninth in the annual Big South Preseason Coaches’ Poll, as announced by the Big South Conference at the end of July and the Bucs look to battle through a tough conference and road slate this season, with the 30 match schedule featuring just nine home contests inside the friendly confines of the Buc Dome. “We are on the road quite a bit but our goals will be the same: to bring our best no matter the circumstances,” said Mooberry on the challenge of playing a majority of the matches on the road. “We should feel confident and experienced with road matches by the time we get to conference tournament and hopefully that will work in our favor. On top of that, road trips are opportunities to make team memories and bond, so we will use those trips as an opportunity to have fun together and continue to build our relationships and team dynamic.”

The Buccaneers roster features four seniors, two juniors, four sophomores and three freshman in the mix this season, with Klinger, junior libero Ashley Higginbothem and sophomore middle blocker Meredith Parrott leading the way on the squad among last season’s top performers returning. Outside Hitters Klinger is joined by a talented group including sophomores Katrina Houston and Siraya Windsor, as well as freshmen Taylor Allman and Nikia Clark as the Bucs look to continue to provide a consistent and powerful attack on the outside. Klinger leads all returning players with 235 kills this past season, hitting .250 from the floor and finished second on the team with 228 digs last year in providing a balanced floor leader for the Buccaneers heading into her senior season. Houston and Windsor saw action in a combined 64 matches last year and earned 32 starts last season as true freshmen, combining for 283 kills, averaging over three kills a set. Houston provides a powerful left-hander to the Buccaneers rotation, while Windsor’s athletic ability allows her to line up all over the court. Allman, a Little River, S.C., native and North Myrtle Beach High School graduate, comes to CSU after being named the 3A South Carolina State Player of the Year after leading the Chiefs to the State Championship. She was a two-time team captain, earning Region VII Player of the Year honors and Toast of the Coast Player of the Year honors and will make an immediate impact in the CSU lineup. Clark brings a 6-1 frame to the court and was a two-time All-State selection and four-time All-Conference selection at Peninsula Catholic in Newport News, Va. She also earned MaxPreps Athlete of the Week seven times during

her high school career. Middle Blockers LaVenice and Parrott both return in the middle and look to help the Buccaneers offset the graduation of senior Wynter Davis. LaVenice set the CSU single match record last season with 13 total blocks against USC Upstate last year and finished third on the team with 69 blocks in the middle last season. Parrott, a 2012 Big South All-Freshman team selection, led all Big South freshmen with a .305 hitting percentage in conference play and had seven matches with at least 10 kills to pace the Buccaneers offense. She also steadily improved during her play over the season, improving an all-around game which saw a high of nine digs at Gardner-Webb as well. Setters Junior Kirsten Struksnes, sophomore Cassidy Greer and senior Laura Grace Swindler return to set up the Bucs offense on the season and all three will make an impact in the CSU lineup. Stuksnes led the way for the Buccaneers last season, averaging 7.79 set assists per game with 935 assists on the season in starting all 34 matches. She had four matches with at least 50 assists on the season and looks to reprise her role in the lineup this season. Close on her heels is Greer who has shown marked improvement during the offseason and was second on the team last season with 209 set assists, averaging nearly three assists a game in seeing action in 30 matches. Swindler will also be in the mix entering her final season and is one of the teamâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s leading defensive players, as well as handling some of the setting duties.

Libero/Defensive Specialist Junior Ashley Higginbothem and senior Maggie Murphy reprise the defensive specialist role on the season for the Buccaneers with both players earning accolades from the CSU coaching staff for their work over the summer and the preseason, while freshman Kellyn Litten will also see time on the backline for the Bucs this season. Higginbothem led the Bucs backline defense last year with 327 digs, averaging 3.56 digs per set on the year. This fall, she has shown marked improvement and continues to impress her teammates with her dedication and abilities. Murphy has also shown improvement heading into her final season and is a team leader both on and off the court. Her leadership will be put to the test early with the Buccaneers early schedule on the road. Litten was a standout player at Huron High School in Huron, Ohio, where she recorded a 91.5 percent serving percentage with 23 aces, and added 200 set assists and 129 digs to her totals in her senior season. Schedule One year after playing a schedule which saw Charleston Southern host two tournaments and featured 16 games at home, the Buccaneers return to the road for four away tournaments this season, while nine home matches highlight the Charleston Southern volleyball schedule. Seven of the nine home contests will feature Big South Conference matchups, beginning with Campbell on October 4, while Senior Day comes against rival Coastal Carolina on November 8. Charleston Southern opens up the schedule on the on August 30-31 at the Davidson Tournament, while the Bucs host Savannah State on September 8 in their home opener inside the Buc Dome.

Christy Mooberry Head Coach 1st Season Moody Bible, ‘01 Mooberry comes to Charleston Southern in the summer of 2013 by way of Union University in Jackson, Tenn. after one season with the Bulldogs, leading the team to the NCCAA MidEast Region Championship match before falling to Campbellsville to end the season. She coached two players that finished on the NCCAA MidEast All-Region team in freshmen Kristin Cook and Elise Seufert, while Cook received NCCAA National Player of the Week honors during the 2012 season as well. Mooberry’s career head coaching record at four year schools is 102-94 (.520) over five seasons. Before going to Union, Mooberry left her mark on Montreat College as she led the volleyball program to the Appalachian Athletic Conference regular season title in 2010, and a tournament title in 2011. She improved their standing in conference rankings each season she coached at Montreat. In 2010, her team set a Montreat volleyball record with a program best 28 wins. Her team participated in the NAIA National Championships Opening Round in 2011. She led her team to at least 25 victories in each of her last three seasons at Montreat. The four seasons captured many AAC, AVCA and NAIA awards for the Cavs including the prestigious NAIA National Player of the Year award, 9 AAC First Team All-Conference awards, 2 AAC Second Team All-Conference Awards, 6 AAC All Freshmen Team awards, 7 AAC All-Tournament Team awards, 1 AAC Tournament MVP and 17 All-Academic Team awards. Also in the list of awards the Cavs have earned in her four seasons are: 10 AAC Player of the Week at the Conference Level awards, 9 AAC Hitter of the Week awards, 8 AAC Setter of the Week awards, 4 NAIA AVCA All Region, Northeast Region, 2 NAIA AVCA Honorable Mention All American, 1 AAC Libero of the Week award, and 2 Daktronics Scholar Athletes. Prior to coaching at Montreat, Mooberry coached at Newfane (N.Y.) High School. She also coached the Western New York Stars Volleyball Club team. Mooberry played volleyball at the high school and club levels in the southwest suburbs of Chicago. She played college volleyball for two seasons at the University of Saint Francis (Ill.). While there, she helped lead her teams to back-to-back Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference Tournament titles. Mooberry was named a scholar athlete and was named to the Dean’s List in both 1998 and 1999.

Mooberry then transferred to the Moody Bible Institute where she graduated in 2001 with a Bachelor’s of Arts degree in sports ministry. While at the Moody Bible Institute, she earned numerous volleyball awards, including two NCCAA Division II First Team All-American awards, NCCAA Midwest Region All-Tournament in 1999 and 2000, six all-tournament awards, and two tournament MVPs. She served as team captain and also earned the Most Inspirational Award while playing in the Grace Bible College Volleyball Classic. Mooberry earned the President’s Award and was named the Moody Bible Institute Female Athlete of the Year for 2000-01. After graduation, Mooberry (then Simmons) and her husband Scott were married in June of 2001 and moved to Newfane. Her first job was an assistant coach position for Wilson (N.Y.) High School for one year, before taking the head coaching job at Newfane High School. During her six years as head coach at Newfane, she posted a 92-26 record and was a perfect 48-0 in conference play over the last four years. They earned four conference titles and were Section VI state finalist from 200407. Mooberry founded the Western New York Stars USA Volleyball Club in 2002, which provided opportunities for both athletic development and ministry impact. Mooberry is a USAV Level II Certified Coach through the USAV’s Coaching Accreditation Program, an International Sports Sciences Association Certified Fitness Trainer, and a New York State Licensed Physical Therapist Assistant. In addition, she holds a New York State coaching certification. She was published in the June/July 2011 American Volleyball Coaches Association’s Coaching Volleyball magazine. Assistant Coach 2nd Season Weber State, ‘11

Student Assistant 2nd Season

Kimberly Lissinna begins her second season with the CSU volleyball coaching staff after joining the program in the fall of 2012.

Reiter begins her second season with the Charleston Southern volleyball coaching staff in the fall of 2013 after lining up in the CSU Blue and Gold for two years.

Lissinna came to CSU after a one year stint at Minot State University in Minot, North Dakota, where she served as an Assistant Coach. She served as the lead recruiter for Canadian athletes and was also responsible for the equipment for the players and practices. She also served as the main statistician for the Beavers’ volleyball team.

During her career, she saw action in eight matches and 10 sets, lining up as an outside hitter. Among her career highlights include registering her first career kill in 2010 vs. Savannah State, and her first dig on Sept. 17 vs. Western Carolina.

Prior to Minot State, she served as an individual volleyball instructor from 2008-2009, working on position specific skills. Lissinna has extensive club volleyball coaching experience, serving as the Head Coach for the Under 16 Club Xtreme Volleyball team in 2008, as well as the Under 14 Pipestone Crocs Club Volleyball team from 2004-2007. While with the Crocs, the team won a provincial bronze medal. She also served as the junior high girls’ volleyball head coach at Kelvington High School from 2004-2007. She was the youngest coach in the town’s history to take the position when she started. Lissinna started coaching after a decorated career as a setter at Weber State University, where she started as a true freshman under Coach Givens in 2007. She was a four year starter at Weber State and served as the captain of the team in 2010. Career highlights include Big Sky All-Conference Academic Awards in 2007 and 2010, as well as being named to the President’s List in 2011 and 2012 at Minot State. She graduated from Weber State University in Ogden, Utah in May 2011 with a Bachelor’s of Science, with an emphasis in Athletic Therapy.

In high school, Reiter was a four year varsity member at Wade Hampton High School under Coach Grant Hunter. She was an All-Region selection during her senior season, serving as captain in 2009. She also played for Club South under Coach Regina Schantz. During her time in high school, she was a National Honor Society member and was named Student of the Year in Sports Medicine and Spanish, while also participating on the softball, basketball and swimming teams.

Kendall Canzater Student Assistant 1st Season Canzater joins the CSU staff in the fall of 2013 after coming to Charleston Southern from Columbia, S.C. and Spring Valley High School, where she played under Coach Deanna Rudnik. April Varnum joined the CSU Athletic Training staff in the fall of 2012 and will be working with the Lady Bucs women’s basketball team, as well as the cheer and dance teams.

Seth Montgomery begins his first year as the Assistant Sports Information Director at Charleston Southern University, joining the staff during the summer of 2012.

Varnum comes to CSU after serving as a graduate assistant athletic trainer at College of Charleston from 2010-2012 where she worked with the CofC women’s basketball, cheerleading and dance teams, as well as filling in with other sports as needed.

Montgomery joins the Buccaneers SID staff after four years at Brevard College where he served as the Athletic Media Relations Director. He served as the primary media contact for all 18 of the Tornados athletic teams, as well as an alternate color commentator for BC football, basketball and baseball games.

She also worked as an athletic training student at Erskine College where she worked under the supervision of the head athletic trainer. She assisted with the Flying Fleet’s men’s basketball, women’s and men’s soccer, softball and baseball teams. She also helped with the Dixie High School varsity football team and the Emerald High School JV and Varsity football teams. Varnum also assisted with multiple summer camps from 20082011 where she helped prepare male and female adolescent soccer athletes for practices and games. She also supervised games in case of emergency situations for various sports including: soccer, baseball, men’s and women’s basketball and cheerleading. She is currently certified by the Red Cross in CPR/AED, First Aid and Blood Borne Pathogens and can administer first aid and wound care to athletes. She also utilizes therapeutic modalities, therapeutic exercises, taping and wrapping techniques for treatment and prevention of injuries to athletes at the collegiate level. Varnum also has experience working as an ACI and has Graston Technique M1 Training and Impact experience.

Montgomery also served as one of the hosts for Tornado Talk, BC’s weekly Friday morning radio sports show hosted by WSQL 1240 AM from 8:45-9 a.m., where he recapped the week’s events with Brevard student-athletes, coaches, staff and Tornados fans. He graduated magna cum laude in December of 2008 from North Greenville University with a Bachelor of Science in Sport Management with a minor in Business Administration. Montgomery started his work in Athletic Media Relations as a student-assistant at North Greenville University, where he worked with the football and baseball teams as both a statistician and radio color commentator. He also served as the main media contact for the Spartanburg Stingers baseball team in the Coastal Plains League in 2007, serving as the statistician and radio alternate. Prior to joining the staff at Brevard, Montgomery worked as a media intern at the Arnold Palmer Invitational Golf Tournament at the Bay Hill Country Club in Orlando, Fla. in 2008.

Varnum is also a member of the National Athletic Training Society, South Carolina Athletic Training Society and the MidAtlantic Athletic Training Association. Varnum graduated from Erskine College in May of 2010 with her bachelor’s degree in Athletic Training and received her master’s degree in Health, Exercise and Sport Science in June of 2012 from The Citadel Graduate College.

High School: Litten comes to Charleston, S.C. and Charleston Southern by way of Huron, Ohio, and Huron High School where she lined up as a defensive specialist under Coach Don Wood. She also lined up for the Northshore Volleyball Club under Coach Korrie Caple. During her senior season at Huron, Litten had a 91.5 percent serving percentage with 23 aces, and she added 200 set assists and 129 digs to her totals in her final year with the Tigers. She also lined up on the Tigersâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; basketball and softball teams during her time at Huron. Personal: She is the daughter of Robin and Mark Litten, and plans to major in Nursing.

On the volleyball court, she was a two-time All-State selection and four-time All-Conference selection, earning Best Attacker at the 2012 Monument Classic. She was also a JVA Athleader in 2012 and earned MVP honors for Peninsula Catholic High School. High School: Allman comes to Charleston Southern by way of Little River, S.C. and North Myrtle Beach High School where she played under Coach Estelle Barentine. She was also a member of the Grand Strand Juniors club team, where she played under Coaches Alex Sing and Richard Knott. While at North Myrtle Beach, Allman was a member of the 2011 and 2012 All-State Championship teams and was a four-time All-Region selection. She was also named the 2012 Toast of the Coach Player of the Year, as well as being named the 3A All-State Player of the Year. In addition to volleyball, Allman excelled on the basketball court and was a four-time All-State selection, as well as a four-time All-Region selection. Big South Announces Preseason Volleyball Awards

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (BigSouthSports.com) – The Liberty University volleyball team has been chosen first in the Big South Conference’s annual preseason poll and Lady Flames’ middle blocker Caroline Douglas was voted the Conference’s Preseason Player of the Year, as voted by the League’s head volleyball coaches and announced today by the Big South office. Liberty, under the direction of 10th year head coach Shane Pinder, was selected to finish first for the third year in a row. The Lady Flames received eight first-place votes and 98 total points. Coastal Carolina, last year’s tournament runner-up, picked up the two remaining first-place votes to finish second in the poll with 92 points. High Point earned 78 points from the coaches to claim the third spot, while UNC Asheville finished fourth with 56 points -- just two points ahead of fifth-place Presbyterian College (54). Radford garnered 52 points for sixth-place, ahead of Winthrop and Gardner-Webb, who were selected seventh and eighth with 47 and 32 points, respectively. Campbell and Charleston Southern round out the list tied for ninth-place with 20 points. Douglas, a redshirt-sophomore middle blocker from Greenville, N.C., is the reigning Big South Player of the Year in addition to being named Big South Freshman of the Year, First-Team All-Conference and AllTournament. Last season, as an outside hitter, she led the Big South with 454 kills and her league-high 3.69 kills per set ranked ninth nationally among all freshmen. Douglas posted 27 10-kill matches and two 20-kill efforts, including a career-best 26 kills at High Point. Her hitting percentage of .281 ranked seventh in the Conference and first among outside hitters. Douglas received eight first-place votes and 58 points to earn the top spot on the Preseason All-Conference Team. Embarking on its 30th year in 2013-14, the Big South Conference has matured into a competitive leader in college athletics, actively pursuing excellence on the field of play and in the classroom. The League’s growing presence as an NCAA Division I athletic conference is evident by notable accomplishments on the national stage, innovative marketing and media partnerships, increased television packages, and quality athletic competition while intentionally fostering the academic, personal, social, athletic and leadership development of each student-athlete. This has evolved into the Conference’s mission of “Developing Leaders Through Athletics.” The Big South Conference was formed on August 21, 1983, when Charleston Southern (then Baptist College) Athletic Director Howard Bagwell and Augusta President George Christenberry began recruiting members into the Big South, receiving initial commitments from Augusta, Charleston Southern, Campbell, Coastal Carolina and Winthrop. One month later, Dr. Edward M. Singleton was selected as the League’s first Commissioner and continued to solicit new members. His efforts led to the additions of Armstrong State, Radford and UNC Asheville, giving the Big South more than the required six members to constitute an official conference. The Big South’s first year of competition was in the Fall of 1984, and in September 1986, the Big South Conference was granted full-fledged NCAA Division I status. During its infancy and prior to securing automatic bids to NCAA Championships, the Big South made early strides in earning at-large berths in several national postseason events, including volleyball, women’s basketball and women’s golf. In 1989, George F. “Buddy” Sasser replaced the retiring Dr. Singleton as Commissioner, and in 1990, the League received its first automatic bid – receiving an automatic qualifier to the NCAA Baseball Championship. Under Sasser’s seven years of leadership, the Conference implemented its public relations and compliance programs, and introduced its first-ever men’s basketball television package, featuring the Big South competing against some of the finest teams in the nation. In August 1996, Kyle B. Kallander replaced Sasser as the League’s third Commissioner, and in his 17 years at the helm of the Big South, Kallander has been instrumental in aggressively promoting the Conference to new heights. The Conference has enjoyed record levels in marketing revenue during his tenure, as he has brought television coverage to Big South women’s basketball, baseball, softball, men’s and women’s soccer, volleyball and women’s lacrosse for the first time in Conference history, as well as increased national television exposure to the League as a whole through aggressive and unique television packages.

Under Kallander’s leadership, the Big South developed and initiated its first long-range strategic plan, re-affirming the League’s vision as a distinctive athletic Conference committed to the quality of institutional life through athletic competition. He also spearheaded the efforts to add football as a championship sport, which came to fruition in 2002, and oversaw the additions of men’s and women’s indoor track & field in 1997 and women’s lacrosse in 2013. At the same time, Kallander has solidified Conference membership, as an all-time high 12 member institutions comprise the 30-year old League. Recent additions include High Point, Gardner-Webb, Presbyterian College and Longwood, plus the return of charter member Campbell University. Kallander’s long range vision has also included technological advancements, as the Conference introduced its first live video streaming event in 2005 and has since expanded its video offerings to more than 900 events annually through a partnership with the member institutions, as well as the creation of several online and social media platforms. Since 2000, the Big South Conference has experienced monumental growth and success in nearly every sport. During this time, the Conference has had an individual National Champion six times, has had more than 300 All-Americans, has reached the “Sweet 16” in men’s soccer, women’s basketball and baseball, has received national Top 25 rankings in football, men’s soccer, men’s basketball, women’s basketball, baseball, men’s outdoor track & field, and men’s golf, had an individual selected to play in the NCAA Singles Championship seven times in addition to the first men’s tennis doubles at-large selection, had the first women’s golf program advance to the national finals, had the No. 1 ranked men’s golfer in the country, had the nation’s top scoring men’s basketball team five consecutive years as well as the national men’s basketball scoring leader twice, has received two at-large playoff berths in the Football Championship Subdivision since 2006, has had six NFL Draft picks, and has had two institutions finish in the top 10 in the NCAA Men’s Golf Championships -- including the Conference’s highest-ever team finish in an NCAA event (fifth in 2007). In 2006-07, the Big South was the only Conference nationwide to have an at-large participant in the football playoffs (Coastal Carolina), a team in the Second Round of the NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament (Winthrop) and a No. 1 seed in the NCAA Baseball Regionals (Coastal Carolina). In fact, Coastal Carolina’s baseball program has been a No. 1 seed four times -- including a national

seed for the first time in 2010, while the Chanticleers’ FCS playoff berth in 2006 came in just the fifth-year of the Big South’s football existence. The 2009-10 season saw Liberty’s Sam Chelanga win two NCAA National Championships (cross country, 10,000-meter run); Coastal Carolina’s baseball team reach the Super Regionals for the second time in three years as well as being ranked No. 1 in the national RPI and as high as No. 3 in the national polls; and three women’s basketball teams reach the postseason for the first time in Conference history. In 2010-11, Chelanga won two more NCAA National Championships (cross country, outdoor 5,000-meter run), the Big South had its first automatic bid recipient in football (Coastal Carolina), UNC Asheville reached the Second Round of the NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament, Coastal Carolina’s women’s golf team was the first in Conference history to advance to the NCAA Championship out of Regional play, and a League-record 18 baseball players were drafted in the 2011 MLB First-Year Player Draft. In 201112, the Big South had a record five individuals selected for the NCAA Men’s Golf Regionals -- the most of any Division I conference, as well as a record 42 All-Americans. This past season, the Big South had 32 student-athletes earn All-America distinction, while another 12 were named Academic All-Americans. The Conference also had two football playoff teams – and two playoff wins -for the first time, had a women’s basketball team win a postseason game for the first time since 2005, had a League-record four men’s basketball teams selected for postseason play, had two men’s soccer teams reach the NCAA Tournament for the second consecutive season, and had two men’s and women’s golf programs selected for NCAA Regional play. prominence in recent years. Coastal Carolina’s Amber Campbell made the U.S. Olympic Team in 2008 and 2012, and was one of five former Big South athletes to compete in the 2008 Games; High Point’s Tamas Kovacs qualified for the 2012 London Games; VMI’s Reggie Williams reached the NBA with the Golden State Warriors in 2010, UNC Asheville’s Ty Wigginton was named an American League All-Star in 2010, and Coastal Carolina’s Dustin Johnson has won seven PGA Tour events since departing the Big South Conference in 2007. Three former Big South baseball players made their major league debuts in 2012, while Avery Warley became the third Big South women’s basketball player to play in the WNBA two years ago. The Conference’s tagline, “Developing Leaders Through Athletics” was unveiled in 2008-09 in conjunction with the Conference’s 25th Anniversary. The League also honored its heritage with the Top 25 “Best of the Best” moments in League history from 1983-2008, with Liberty University’s 10-year women’s basketball championship run from 19962007 being crowned the No. 1 moment in the Big South’s first 25 years. The Conference’s on-field accomplishments have been duplicated in the classroom. For the past four years, nearly 50 percent of Conference’s student-athletes were named to the Big South’s Presidential Honor Roll for maintaining a 3.0 grade-point average for the academic year, and the League has had more than 110 Academic All-Americans in its history. Furthermore, the Big South has recorded double figure totals in NCAA Public Recognition Awards for APR progress the last four years. As part of this year’s 30th anniversary celebration, the League will recognize All-Decade Teams for each sport spanning the Conference’s first three decades of existence.

Dr . Jairy C. Hunter , Jr ., President Named president of Charleston Southern University in 1984, Dr. Jairy C. Hunter, Jr. is also a professor of management and education. His teaching and professional interests include educational leadership, institutional assessment, higher education finance, organizational change and student personnel services.r. Hunter is a frequent keynote speaker and seminar leader on topics related to higher education, and he continues to teach in the MBA program in CSU’s School of Business. During his tenure at CSU, enrollment has increased from 1,600 students to more than 3,200. Academic programs have expanded to include graduate degrees in education, business administration, criminal justice and nursing. Church ministry-related degrees have also grown to include youth ministry and church music. A sports medicine/athletic training program has also been added under Hunter’s administration, providing students with academic and clinical preparation for certification by the National Athletic Trainers Association. Beginning in 2007-08, the annual Hunter Cup is given to the top athlete who also stands out academically and spiritually.

Dr. Rick Brewer is a seasoned Christian leader with the vision and leadership skills essential for serving effectively in the 21st century Christian Higher Education community. Throughout Dr. Brewer’s 24-year tenure at CSU, he has played a vital role in shaping the University’s vision for a Christian campus environment and spearheading and executing countless initiatives that underscore what Christian universities are about.

He has consistently and enthusiastically taken on positions of increasing responsibility, and has brought to each his unique blend of commitment, administrative skills and Christ-centered focus. Brewer is highly respected as an effective higher education administrator who has the ability to effect change while maintaining support and trust. Indeed, Dr. Brewer is a student-centered strategic thinker and transformational change-agent.

Dr. Brewer holds BS and MBA degrees from CSU and a PhD in Higher Educational Leadership from the University of South Carolina. In his role as Vice President for Student Affairs and Athletics, Dr. Brewer provides leadership for CSU’s student life, Christian ministries, denominational relations and athletics. His family has a solid commitment to Christian higher education - Dr. Brewer’s wife, Cathy, and two sons, Jason and Jonathan, are also alums of CSU. The Brewers are members of Summerville Baptist Church in Summerville, S.C., where he serves as a deacon.

H ank Small, Director of Athletics Henry “Hank” Small is in his 11th full year as CSU’s director of athletics and has helped lead CSU to 13 Big South Conference championships during his time, including the school’s first-ever League title in football. Small came to CSU in the summer of 2001 following a four-year stint as assistant football coach at Wake Forest University. Small has more than 30 years of experience in NCAA Division I athletics, including stints at Rutgers, Florida State, Lehigh, Princeton and Brown. Small also spent one year in the personnel office of the New England Patriots. As the offensive coordinator at Wake Forest, Small guided the Demon Deacons offense to record-setting heights as a number of school records fell during his tenure. In his most recent head coaching experience, Small was able to guide Lehigh to a 47-40-1 record and led them to become one of the most productive offenses in the nation. Small is a 1969 graduate of Gettysburg College and has a master of science degree from Rutgers University. Small and his wife, Pamela, currently reside in Goose Creek. Daughter Lacy and middle son Jonathan both graduated from CSU.

Integrating Faith in Learning, Leading and Serving

The Big South Conference officially re-launched www.BigSouthSports. com this year, which now fully integrates the Conference website and the Big South Network (BSN) as part of a joint venture between the Conference office and Webstream Sports. In addition, the BSN -- the Conference’s online video channel presented by corporate partner State Farm, is no longer a subscription service and all live and on-demand events can be viewed for free.

The dynamic redesign of the site and video service offers all visitors a “one size fits all” experience, one that can be seen through the web browsers of phones, tablets, laptops or desktops that adapt to best fit the desired display -- all major platforms are supported. In addition to the new look, the site features simpler navigation as well as an instant click to launch the Big South Network’s free live and on-demand offerings of the more than 900 events the Big South Conference and its member institutions have produced annually. Webstream Sports, in conjunction with Indianapolis-based TGFI, hosts the fully integrated website and digital network. In addition, Webstream Sports will produce a minimum 50 Big South events covering every Conference team sport -- football, men’s and

women’s soccer, volleyball, men’s and women’s basketball, softball, baseball and women’s lacrosse -- exclusively for ESPN3 in high-definition. Big South corporate partner Hardee’s is also a contributing partner to the BSN’s new free viewing format.
