Eric Terrill Head Coach 19th Season Michigan State ‘87 Head Coach Eric Terrill begins his 19th season at the helm of the Charleston Southern Buccaneers women’s soccer team, taking over the program in 1995 after serving as the head coach at Chowan College. During his tenure as the head coach, the Buccaneers have posted a record of 142-172-32 overall, going 57-59-16 in Big South Conference action, including leading Charleston Southern to a share of the 2010 Big South regular season championship. This past season, the Buccaneers made their 20th consecutive trip to the Big South Conference Championships, before falling to regular season champion High Point in the first round. Charleston Southern was led by All-Conference forward Toni Lashley and midfielder Rebecca Hollstegge, while freshman Gina Cox was named to the All-Freshman team. The 2011 season saw the Bucs post their fifth consecutive winning record as CSU went 9-8-2 overall including a five match winning streak from September 4 – 23 against USC Upstate, Georgia Southern, Francis Marion, The Citadel and Longwood. Inside the friendly confines of Blackbaud Stadium, Charleston Southern battled Winthrop to a scoreless tie throughout regulation and overtime before ultimately falling on penalty kicks. Arguably CSU’s best season in program history came in 2010 as Charleston Southern finished in a five-way tie for the Big South regular season championship, led by the Big South Attacking Player of the Year in senior forward Marky Boyce. Boyce led the Big South in both goals scored (19) and points (43) as CSU finished the season with a 12-7-1 record, 6-2-1 in Big South action on the year. Charleston Southern has recorded four double-digit win seasons underneath Terrill, picking up 12 wins in the 2007, 2009 and 2010 seasons, as well as 11 wins in the 1996 season. Charleston Southern has also recorded winning seasons in the Big South in six seasons under Terrill, including a program-record six in 2010. During his time at Charleston Southern, the Bucs have seen 58 players recognized on the postseason All-Conference teams and 10 athletes named to the All-Freshman team. 18 CSU soccer players have also been recognized as Big South Players of the Week, while 10 athletes have led individual Big South categories on the season. The Bucs have also led the conference in team categories on nine different occasions. In his first season as head coach with the Buccaneers, Terrill went 8-11 overall, recording wins over Appalachian State,
Florida International, Liberty and Radford, but the Buccaneers bounced back with both a six match winning streak and a four match winning streak in finishing the season with an 11-8 record. Terrill’s first head coaching job came in 1994, where he coached at NCAA Division II Chowan College. During his one year with the Hawks, he started both the Chowan men’s and women’s soccer programs from scratch. Prior to Chowan, Terrill served as the Men’s and Women’s Assistant Coach at Lees-McRae College from 1990-93. He started his coaching career as a men’s assistant coach at NCAA Division I Appalachian State under Art Rex from 1987-89. Terrill has served as a South Carolina, Tennessee and Virginia Olympic Development Program Coach, as well as a Region III coaching staff member. During his time at Charleston Southern, his recruiting classes have boasted numerous accolades, including recruiting the top ranked class in the Big South and the 23rd ranked class in the East Region by Soccer Buzz Magazine in 2006. Terrill holds an NSCAA Advanced National Diploma. Terrill and his wife Debra reside in Summerville, S.C. and have three children; a son, Easton, and daughters Chandler and Riley. Season Outlook Seniors Toni Lashley, Chloe Urig and Allison Lewis lead the way for the 2013 Charleston Southern Women’s Soccer team under Head Coach Eric Terrill, as the Buccaneers look ahead to the possibilities of what could turn out to be one of the best seasons in CSU soccer history. With three seniors, seven juniors, seven sophomores and eight freshmen on the roster, youthful energy and the steadiness of the upperclassmen will be expected to blend as the Buccaneers look to make it to the postseason for the 21st consecutive season and return to the Big South Championships. “Preseason’s been like a breath of fresh air. Intensity is the key word in the preseason,” said Terrill on the 2013 fall preseason for the women’s soccer program. “There are a lot of talented kids and they’re all motivated in the right direction. They’re all fighting for spots and I feel like intensity is key in what we have going on in the preseason and I hope we carry that on into the season.” After a 7-11-1 season in 2012 which saw the Buccaneers fall in the first round of the Big South tournament to High Point, Charleston Southern looks to return to previous glory under a trio of seniors who have received multiple accolades throughout their careers, including All-Conference, AllFreshman and Scholar-Athlete honors. “All three seniors have stood out, they’ve all really come to the table to help accomplish our goals. Toni, Ali and Chloe have all come to the table fit and their mentality is right to lead the program,” said Terrill on his returning three seniors. “Coming in with the talent that we have and the upperclassmen and with the freshmen, I felt like we are a stronger team and we should be able to do a lot of things. We should be good heading into the College of Charleston game, I think the difference between last season and this season is the intensity in practice, they’re going in the right direction. All over the field we have a lot of good players and a lot of depth. I feel really good about this season.”
Juniors on and off the field, and will immediately make an impact in the lineup. “We have some good leadership from the upper class and a breath of fresh air from the freshmen and everyone has just stepped up to make an impact,” said Terrill on the leadership of the returning players this year. “I feel really positive about the fall and what we’ve tried to do. I think it’s an extension of the spring. We started working in the spring; we had some issues come up last fall and we’ve worked hard to correct those issues and we feel they’ve been corrected already through the kids who have bought in and through the freshmen who have come in and brought a new level of intensity. I think the upperclassmen are excited about the freshman class, they’re excited about what they’re able to do and I think everybody is really excited about this upcoming season.” Charleston Southern opens up the 2013 season on the road at local rival College of Charleston on August 23, before hosting their home opener on August 26 against Francis Marion.
Although the Buccaneers graduated two of the top players in recent program history in midfielder Becca Hollstegge and forward Morgann Wood, Charleston Southern returns the talents of juniors Stephanie Hand and Emma Faubert, as well as sophomores Gina Cox and Chelsea Frankeny to the pitch.
Forwards Several natural scorers stand out on the front line for Charleston Southern this season, led by returning First Team All-Conference forward Lashley, as well as Chelsea Phillips, Chelsea Frankeny and freshman Anna Sells.
The 2013 freshman class has great things expected of them as Terrill looks for this class to be a foundation the program can build on, with all eight players having a blue collar work ethic
Lashley, a 2012 First Team All-Conference forward, returns to headline the front line offense for the Bucs after leading CSU and finishing second in the Big South rankings for goals scored on the season, finding the back of the net 11 times and adding one assist to her team-high 23 points. Among her highlights from last season include her first collegiate hat trick in CSU’s 5-2 victory over UNC Asheville and she enters the 2013 season tied for seventh all-time in CSU’s career goal scoring leaders with 25 goals scored. Phillips scored a pair of goals in victories over USC Upstate and Liberty and proved her finishing abilities in last year’s season opener with a goal in the Bucs win over the Spartans, while Frankeny marked a standout freshman campaign, finishing third on the team with four goals scored, including a pair of game winners against USC Upstate and Coastal Carolina and showcased her play-making ability around the net with an assist against Gardner-Webb. Sells joins in the mix in her freshman season and brings size and physicality to the front lines. A proven goal scorer at J.H. Rose High School in Greenville, N.C., her presence on the field can change the CSU attack as she can play with her back to the pressure and find the net.
Seniors 8
Midfielders The midfield features the majority of the depth and skill on the squad as the line features several players known for both their offensive prowess and defensive acumen, including Lewis, as

well as juniors Emma Faubert and Gina Thomas and 2012 AllFreshman selection Gina Cox. Sophomores Ashley Lowdermilk, Jane Vardzel and Rebecca Henry all join in the mix as well as standout freshmen Kelsey Fitzhugh and Erica Gazzani as the Bucs boast an abundance of talent and riches that will battle to make an impact and see playing time on the pitch. Lewis returns to captain the midfield for Charleston Southern in her senior season and continues her steady play, having appeared in all 58 matches, including starts in all 19 matches in both her sophomore and junior seasons. Lewis, a two-time Big South All-Academic selection, scored two-game winning goals last season and added one assist and will be called again to lead the middle of the field for CSU as one of the team’s best skill players on the field. Faubert has entered preseason stronger this season and her and Thomas provide offensive firepower from the midfield as both athletes have proven scoring ability and athleticism, while Cox provides a powerful left foot on corner kicks and added a goal and two assists in her inaugural campaign in the CSU Blue and Gold. Lowdermilk, Vardzel and Henry all return and look to build off of promising freshman campaigns as Lowdermilk displayed her versatility all over the field last season, while Vardzel and Henry provide great endurance and combine speed and power to the Bucs line. The duo of Fitzhugh and Gazzani have already impressed Coach Terrill in the preseason as Fitzhugh has a natural feel for the game after coming to the Bucs from the Hilton Head Island High School where she lined up on the three-time State Championship squad, earning Team MVP honors in both her sophomore and junior seasons. Gazzani features an athletic skill set and great vision on the field which will open up several opportunities for CSU this season and helped her score close to 100 career goals and add 50 career assists during her playing career at Carolina Forest High School. Defenders The defensive backline has been the most impressive unit for the Buccaneers this fall preseason and has drawn a lot of praise from Coach Terrill. The defenders, led by senior Chloe Urig, as well as juniors Tori Wright, Stephanie Hand, Kenandra DeSaussure and Hali Singleton, as well as sophomore Chandler Wingreen return to patrol the last line of defense for the Bucs, while freshmen Nikki Schoning, Jordan Haughton-James, Kayla Vollero and Emily Moore have been keeping pace in one of the fiercest battles for playing time this fall. Urig leads the way on the backline for Charleston Southern, returning for her senior season after appearing in all 19 games in pacing the Buccaneers defensive front. Possessing a powerful leg, Urig handled a majority of the free kicks on the season and looks to continue her standout play since her freshman season where she was a First Team All-Conference selection. She will
Freshmen also see time at the defensive middle back position, along with Faubert this season. Hand’s steady play two years ago earned her a 2011 Big South All-Freshman team selection and she closed out the 2012 year strong, while DeSaussure’s closing speed and athleticism has made her an asset on the outside for the Bucs with her ability to chase down and clear overextended passes. Singleton and Wright both give CSU versatility on the backline with the ability to play multiple possessions on the backline well, while Wingreen was one of the top ballmarkers on the CSU squad last season and earned praise from the coaching staff for her consistent play in her first collegiate season. Schoning has stood out in camp and has great chemistry with the Bucs defensive leaders on the field after a high school career that showcased her quickness and athleticism to make her one of the best centerbacks in the state. Haughton-James has displayed versatility and is a great ball-winner along the lines of former CSU player Casey Bolduc. Moore was a threetime All-County selection and three-time captain at Woodland High School and has an aggressive mentality on the backline, while Vollero spent four years on the varsity squad at Red Land High School in Lewisberry, Pa. and can play all over the field to accent her strength and athleticism. Goalkeepers Competition reigns between the pipes in the goal box for Charleston Southern this fall as redshirt junior Caitlin Cody is holding off incoming freshman for the starting position. Cody led all goalkeepers in the NCAA Division I with 167 saves, allowing an average of 2.02 goals per game and a .815 save percentage on the season to pace the Buccaneers efforts between the pipes. Her talent shown through a pair of shutouts last season as the Bucs topped Northern Iowa, 1-0, and VMI, 4-0, to move her into fourth all-time on the CSU shutout list and she has continued with a strong spring, including making several outstanding stops in fall preseason. McLaughlin is battling for playing time against Cody out of the gates as the 5-10 New Bern, N.C., native enters after finishing a storied career at Epiphany School where she was a four-time Coastal Plains Independent School All-Conference selection, earning NCSIAA All-State honors in both 2012 and 2013. She also earned the start in the Bucs preseason scrimmage against USC Beaufort, going the distance in CSU’s 4-0 victory.
Sophomores
Schedule Charleston Southern will look to advance into the postseason for the 21st consecutive season in 2013 as the Buccaneers will host nine matches on the friendly pitch of the CSU Soccer Field. Highlighting the schedule include the return of the Nike Tournament, as well as home contests against Big South foes Radford, Presbyterian, VMI, Winthrop and Gardner-Webb.

In addition, she was also selected to the NC ODP 95 team for Region III camp. She was a three-time recipient of the Coach’s Leadership Award and earned the Headmaster’s Scholar Award for the Highest GPA in both 2009 and 2010. She received the 2010 CPIC Scholar Athlete Award, and was named the Epiphany Student-Athlete of the Year in 2011. Coach Terill on McLaughlin ~ “Dana comes in and fills a need that we’ve sweated on a lot as our goalkeeping situation has been a bit tenuous after an unfortunate situation in 2012. She was by far the best goalkeeper we saw out there with great size and athleticism in the box. What separates her is her mentality; she’s a hard-worker and serious about the game. She has an established idea of what she wants and how to get there and we’re really excited about what she brings to the table. She’ll provide a competitive battle with Caitlin Cody, which will only help our situation in goal get even better.”

Coach Terill on Fitzhugh ~ “Kelsey came to us a little later in the recruiting process when we saw her at the state championship game, and she was phenomenal. She’s big, athletic and aggressive, and she jumped on everyone’s radar following the championships. She’s someone who just wants it and is a proven player who steps up in high profile games. We’re excited about what she brings to the park for us and her athleticism and mentality will help us out.”
Nikki Schoning Defender 5-7 * Freshman Hilton Head Island, S.C. Hilton Head HS

She was also a member of the Disney Soccer Showcase Champions team in 2012. She also participated in the S.C. ODP in 2008 and 2011. Coach Terrill on Schoning ~ “Nikki was the best center back in the state. She’s so quick and athletic and has good knowledge of the position. Speed is something we haven’t had at that position and we think she can come in and make an impact right away, both on our team and in the conference.”
Kelsey Fitzhugh Midfielder 5-7 * Freshman Hilton Head Island, S.C. Hilton Head HS
Erica Gazzani Midfielder 5-9 * Freshman Myrtle Beach, S.C. Carolina Forest HS

Coach Terrill on Gazzani ~ “Erica possesses good vision and good size on the field and is really talented in the middle, possessing a great skill set that can control our attack. Making the region team was huge as she was one of only three kids in the state, and we knew recruiting her that we feel that she can feed our attackers, working with Toni (Lashley), Chelsea (Phillips), Chelsea (Frankeny) and Anna (Sells) and connect everything for us up top.”

Coach Terrill on Vollero ~ “We got to see Kayla early on and she brings athleticism, good size and a great defensive mentality to the field. She can play in a variety of positions on the field and showcased it on one of the best club programs in Pennsylvania. She was also named to the 2012 Georgia High School Association All-State Second team. In addition to her prowess on the field, Moore was also named to the National Soccer Coaches Association of America All-Academic Team. Coach Terrill on Moore ~ “Emily was a big factor for us early on, bringing a defensive presence, which is where we struggled at times last season. She plays for a talented club, but one thing that will separate Emily is her size. She’s not afraid to get into the middle of things and she’s a crusher in the air. She gets the ball and is great in 1v1 tackle situations, giving us a physical presence we did not have. She has a great aggressive mentality and will be one of those girls who will go out there and fight for balls.”
Jordan H aughton-James Defender 5-5 * Freshman Hilton Head Island, S.C. Hilton Head HS

In club play she lined up with the South Carolina United squad for two seasons in the R3 Premier League, leading the team to a State Championship in 2012 after falling shorts in the finals in 2011. Coach Terrill on Haughton-James ~ “Jordan is one of those kids who was under the radar a little bit, but we watched her a lot and she is really smart on the field. She reminds me a former CSU player Casey Bolduc in that she’s a good ball-winner and finds a way to be around the ball. She’s versatile on the field and can play both right and left back and brings a lot to the table.”

Coach Terrill on Sales ~ “Anna is another player who comes in and fills a spot of need for us in our lineup,” said Terrill on Sells. “She brings size and physicality up top; she can jump in the pile, score off corners and is good with her back to pressure. We possess a lot of players with speed up top, but her presence can help change our attack and she is a proven goal scorer. She knows several of the players on the team and she’s someone we think fits in and will do very well in the conference.”

Embarking on its 30th year in 2013-14, the Big South Conference has matured into a competitive leader in college athletics, actively pursuing excellence on the field of play and in the classroom. The League’s growing presence as an NCAA Division I athletic conference is evident by notable accomplishments on the national stage, innovative marketing and media partnerships, increased television packages, and quality athletic competition while intentionally fostering the academic, personal, social, athletic and leadership development of each student-athlete. This has evolved into the Conference’s mission of “Developing Leaders Through Athletics.” The Big South Conference was formed on August 21, 1983, when Charleston Southern (then Baptist College) Athletic Director Howard Bagwell and Augusta President George Christenberry began recruiting members into the Big South, receiving initial commitments from Augusta, Charleston Southern, Campbell, Coastal Carolina and Winthrop. One month later, Dr. Edward M. Singleton was selected as the League’s first Commissioner and continued to solicit new members. His efforts led to the additions of Armstrong State, Radford and UNC Asheville, giving the Big South more than the required six members to constitute an official conference. The Big South’s first year of competition was in the Fall of 1984, and in September 1986, the Big South Conference was granted full-fledged NCAA Division I status. During its infancy and prior to securing automatic bids to NCAA Championships, the Big South made early strides in earning at-large berths in several national postseason events, including volleyball, women’s basketball and women’s golf. In 1989, George F. “Buddy” Sasser replaced the retiring Dr. Singleton as Commissioner, and in 1990, the League received its first automatic bid – receiving an automatic qualifier to the NCAA Baseball Championship. Under Sasser’s seven years of leadership, the Conference implemented its public relations and compliance programs, and introduced its first-ever men’s basketball television package, featuring the Big South competing against some of the finest teams in the nation. In August 1996, Kyle B. Kallander replaced Sasser as the League’s third Commissioner, and in his 17 years at the helm of the Big South, Kallander has been instrumental in aggressively promoting the Conference to new heights. The Conference has enjoyed record levels in marketing revenue during his tenure, as he has brought television coverage to Big South women’s basketball, baseball, softball, men’s and women’s soccer, volleyball and women’s lacrosse for the first time in Conference history, as well as increased national television exposure to the League as a whole through aggressive and unique television packages.
Under Kallander’s leadership, the Big South developed and initiated its first long-range strategic plan, re-affirming the League’s vision as a distinctive athletic Conference committed to the quality of institutional life through athletic competition. He also spearheaded the efforts to add football as a championship sport, which came to fruition in 2002, and oversaw the additions of men’s and women’s indoor track & field in 1997 and women’s lacrosse in 2013. At the same time, Kallander has solidified Conference membership, as an all-time high 12 member institutions comprise the 30-year old League. Recent additions include High Point, Gardner-Webb, Presbyterian College and Longwood, plus the return of charter member Campbell University. Kallander’s long range vision has also included technological advancements, as the Conference introduced its first live video streaming event in 2005 and has since expanded its video offerings to more than 900 events annually through a partnership with the member institutions, as well as the creation of several online and social media platforms. Since 2000, the Big South Conference has experienced monumental growth and success in nearly every sport. During this time, the Conference has had an individual National Champion six times, has had more than 300 All-Americans, has reached the “Sweet 16” in men’s soccer, women’s basketball and baseball, has received national Top 25 rankings in football, men’s soccer, men’s basketball, women’s basketball, baseball, men’s outdoor track & field, and men’s golf, had an individual selected to play in the NCAA Singles Championship seven times in addition to the first men’s tennis doubles at-large selection, had the first women’s golf program advance to the national finals, had the No. 1 ranked men’s golfer in the country, had the nation’s top scoring men’s basketball team five consecutive years as well as the national men’s basketball scoring leader twice, has received two at-large playoff berths in the Football Championship Subdivision since 2006, has had six NFL Draft picks, and has had two institutions finish in the top 10 in the NCAA Men’s Golf Championships -- including the Conference’s highest-ever team finish in an NCAA event (fifth in 2007). In 2006-07, the Big South was the only Conference nationwide to have an at-large participant in the football playoffs (Coastal Carolina), a team in the Second Round of the NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament (Winthrop) and a No. 1 seed in the NCAA Baseball Regionals (Coastal Carolina). In fact, Coastal Carolina’s baseball program has been a No. 1 seed four times -- including a national

seed for the first time in 2010, while the Chanticleers’ FCS playoff berth in 2006 came in just the fifth-year of the Big South’s football existence. The 2009-10 season saw Liberty’s Sam Chelanga win two NCAA National Championships (cross country, 10,000-meter run); Coastal Carolina’s baseball team reach the Super Regionals for the second time in three years as well as being ranked No. 1 in the national RPI and as high as No. 3 in the national polls; and three women’s basketball teams reach the postseason for the first time in Conference history. In 2010-11, Chelanga won two more NCAA National Championships (cross country, outdoor 5,000-meter run), the Big South had its first automatic bid recipient in football (Coastal Carolina), UNC Asheville reached the Second Round of the NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament, Coastal Carolina’s women’s golf team was the first in Conference history to advance to the NCAA Championship out of Regional play, and a League-record 18 baseball players were drafted in the 2011 MLB First-Year Player Draft. In 201112, the Big South had a record five individuals selected for the NCAA Men’s Golf Regionals -- the most of any Division I conference, as well as a record 42 All-Americans. This past season, the Big South had 32 student-athletes earn All-America distinction, while another 12 were named Academic All-Americans. The Conference also had two football playoff teams – and two playoff wins -for the first time, had a women’s basketball team win a postseason game for the first time since 2005, had a League-record four men’s basketball teams selected for postseason play, had two men’s soccer teams reach the NCAA Tournament for the second consecutive season, and had two men’s and women’s golf programs selected for NCAA Regional play. Several former Big South student-athletes have also reached national

prominence in recent years. Coastal Carolina’s Amber Campbell made the U.S. Olympic Team in 2008 and 2012, and was one of five former Big South athletes to compete in the 2008 Games; High Point’s Tamas Kovacs qualified for the 2012 London Games; VMI’s Reggie Williams reached the NBA with the Golden State Warriors in 2010, UNC Asheville’s Ty Wigginton was named an American League All-Star in 2010, and Coastal Carolina’s Dustin Johnson has won seven PGA Tour events since departing the Big South Conference in 2007. Three former Big South baseball players made their major league debuts in 2012, while Avery Warley became the third Big South women’s basketball player to play in the WNBA two years ago. The Conference’s tagline, “Developing Leaders Through Athletics” was unveiled in 2008-09 in conjunction with the Conference’s 25th Anniversary. The League also honored its heritage with the Top 25 “Best of the Best” moments in League history from 1983-2008, with Liberty University’s 10-year women’s basketball championship run from 19962007 being crowned the No. 1 moment in the Big South’s first 25 years. The Conference’s on-field accomplishments have been duplicated in the classroom. For the past four years, nearly 50 percent of Conference’s student-athletes were named to the Big South’s Presidential Honor Roll for maintaining a 3.0 grade-point average for the academic year, and the League has had more than 110 Academic All-Americans in its history. Furthermore, the Big South has recorded double figure totals in NCAA Public Recognition Awards for APR progress the last four years. As part of this year’s 30th anniversary celebration, the League will recognize All-Decade Teams for each sport spanning the Conference’s first three decades of existence.

The Big South Conference officially re-launched www.BigSouthSports. com this year, which now fully integrates the Conference website and the Big South Network (BSN) as part of a joint venture between the Conference office and Webstream Sports. In addition, the BSN -- the Conference’s online video channel presented by corporate partner State Farm, is no longer a subscription service and all live and on-demand events can be viewed for free.
The dynamic redesign of the site and video service offers all visitors a “one size fits all” experience, one that can be seen through the web browsers of phones, tablets, laptops or desktops that adapt to best fit the desired display -- all major platforms are supported. In addition to the new look, the site features simpler navigation as well as an instant click to launch the Big South Network’s free live and on-demand offerings of the more than 900 events the Big South Conference and its member institutions have produced annually. Webstream Sports, in conjunction with Indianapolis-based TGFI, hosts the fully integrated website and digital network. In addition, Webstream Sports will produce a minimum 50 Big South events covering every Conference team sport -- football, men’s and
women’s soccer, volleyball, men’s and women’s basketball, softball, baseball and women’s lacrosse -- exclusively for ESPN3 in high-definition. Big South corporate partner Hardee’s is also a contributing partner to the BSN’s new free viewing format.
