CLC/OCLC Direct: Off to a Good Start!
T
he twenty-five public and academic libraries, one special library, and two consortia switched over to CLC/OCLC Direct on July 1 without a hitch, thanks to the work of individual library staffers and OCLC's Andy Bush, who put together a comprehensive FAQ (www.ctlibrarians.org/services/oclc.html) and paid attention to individual questions and queries. The CLC/OCLC Direct Training Team (Carl Antonucci, Capital CC; Alison Wang, NVCC; Cindy Wright, Groton PL; Nancy Abbey, Milford PL; Kristin Whitehead, New Haven PL; Jim Brown, Norwalk PL; Barbara Cervera, UConn; Nick Wharton, U Hartford; Jiming Han, Housatonic CC; Bernadette Baldino, Easton PL; and Amy Plympton, LIMRA) met in Middletown on July 25 with OCLC CAPCON's (www.oclc.org/ capcon/default.htm) Irene Hoffman, Executive Director, and Paulette Hasier, Manager of Education and Member Services. Brainstorming began with a discussion of the training needed in Connecticut. High on the list was training for paraprofessionals, which might be repeated twice a year on the basics—understanding a MARC record, basic Connexion searching, and basic ILL procedures using OCLC. Since it is often paraprofessionals doing the cataloging, they can always use additional training. Also important is training for mid-level supervisors, and training on emerging technologies, especially the design and usability of websites. Assessment and measurement for both academic and public libraries is a two part concern—first identifying and collecting the data, and then presenting it effectively to funding authorities. Barbara Cervera, a member of the BLC (Boston Library Consortium) Training Team and Staff Development Coordinator for the University of Connecticut Libraries, talked about UConn and BLC's positive experience with CAPCON training in 2006-2007.
Irene Hoffman brought a mock-up of the CAPCON webpage, which will be available through CLC's website, to subscribe to OCLC CAPCON news and RSS feeds, as well as special events, discounts, and other training opportunities. The Training Team will meet again at the end of the summer to establish a Connecticut training schedule for 2007-2008. Library Happenings and Member News The Stratford Library's Teen Services Department second annual "Rising Stars @ Stratford Library" program in June drew over 100 area teens and their families to the library. The program was made possible by a grant from Stratford Community Services. The grant was awarded to the library's Teen Creative Writing Group, who organized and performed at the program. Teen event coordinators and grant writers included Franklin Eneh, Amanda Woade, and Corey McNair. "We wanted a program to encourage teens to pursue creative areas without competition," said Teen Services Department Head Lucretia Duwel. The program was a casual afternoon of music, art and poetry which exhibited over thirty works of art, sculpture, photography, and dress design by area teenagers, as well as piano, singing, and poetry performances. Jean Burditt is the new Connecticut EqualAccess Libraries Program Manager at the State Library. EqualAccess Libraries is a partnership with Libraries of the Future and CSL. Jean has worked at Prosser Public Library in Bloomfield and Simsbury Library as well as in the public school system. Christina Mariasi was recognized as New Britain Public Library's Employee of the Year by Director Candice Brown during the library's recent Staff Development Day. The Ridgefield Library's children's summer reading theme is Reading Around the World. Library assistant Diana Messer came up with a mural design that the library's summer intern, Kevin McGrath, did an amazing job creating. Each weekday of summer reading, Kevin adds another "Wonder of the World" to the mural. He also creates one page descriptions of the "wonders" for curious children to read. The descriptions are being collected in a binder so that kids can continue to learn about them all year long.
The following is an excerpt from a recent article in the New Britain Herald on the Connecticut Book Party's fundraising efforts: Some of the lesser-publicized casualties of Hurricane Katrina are the libraries on the Gulf Coast—many of which are just now being reopened two years after the storm. While many library buildings have been rebuilt, their shelves will be empty until libraries are able to replace their collections destroyed in the hurricane. In response to this need, Henry Dutcher, director of the Enfield Public Library, has organized the Connecticut Book Party to raise money for Louisiana and Mississippi libraries. The Connecticut Book Party, named in the spirit of Mardi Gras, is a collection of state libraries and friends of library associations from across the state. Its goal is to raise $250,000 for distribution to local libraries to purchase books. Funds are donated by libraries and friends of the library associations, as well as individuals. Many libraries also donate a portion of the proceeds from other fundraisers to the organization. Dutcher felt Connecticut had a special duty to help the Gulf Coast. "We're the richest state,� Dutcher said. "If we can't help them out, they're in dire trouble." Some successful fundraising efforts on behalf of the Connecticut Book Party include: The Windsor Public Library raised $355 from proceeds from the sale of used books during the month of May, as well as a few individual donations from patrons; The Greens Farms Academy raised $850 from door receipts at a Mardi Gras Dance held in February; New Britain Public Library held a bake sale, raising several hundred dollars. A portion of library fines were also donated, along with a donation from the Friends of the Library. Avon Public Library plans to incorporate the Connecticut Book Party into its children's tag sale, where kids can open their own booths and sell crafts, food, or toys. Hope for sunshine as over 25 local community organizations plan fun educational activities for children at the free Fish Tales, Tugs & Sails Festival on Saturday, August 11. The festival features nationally-known children's authors, big boats, and live entertainment. The event is produced by New London Main Street, the Mitchell College Children's Learning Center, and the Public Library of New London. Cynthia comes to the library after more than 10 years at St. George's Day School's Nathaniel Hill Library. She was also head librarian at the American School Foundation in Mexico City, and speaks fluent Spanish. In addition to the lovely new physical space on North Main Street, the Wallingford Public Library has a new website at www.wallingford.lioninc.org with lots of new features, including excellent databases, an events calendar, and a link to the Wallingford Library Blog. Julian Aiken, Reference and Technology Librarian explains, "The blog is an easy way to keep patrons up to date with programs, events, and materials at the library. Best of all, patrons can write comments directly to the blog, allowing them to give us feedback on how we're doing, things they'd like to see in the library, and to share ideas.”

The Latest from CLC Healthy Choices: Hands-On Medical Reference Training Training Dates Set for Summer/Fall 2007

ealthy Choices is a consumer-health outreach program to foster information-savvy healthcare consumers. Sponsored by the National Network of Libraries of Medicine (NN/LM) and endorsed by CLC, the project is collaboration between Stamford Hospital Health Sciences Library and public libraries in Darien, Norwalk, Stamford, and Wilton.
Healthy Choices Training Dates Training dates for summer/fall 2007 have been scheduled as follows. All sessions begin with coffee at 9:30 am, followed by the workshop from 10 to noon. Module A: Accessing reliable consumer health information resources via MEDLINEPlus and NIH Senior Health (Note: This is the same workshop offered in February 2007).

The Joe Carter Samba Rio Trio This guitar/ bass/ drums trio, led by guitarist Joe Carter, is well versed in the various Brazilian styles of music— Samba, Bossa Nova, Baiao, Choro. Deborah Costine Deborah Costine is the author, artist, and puppeteer of "The Twig Family in the Oak Tree," a gentle story about imaginary twig people living in harmony with nature.
