CLC Pulls Out All the Stops at Meeting

A

good time was had by all at the vineyard during CLC’s annual meeting (we librarians know how to party, even in the middle of a state budget crisis!).

CLC Board Chair Roz Rubinstein kept the sixth annual meeting running on time, and 2009-2010 CLC dues were kept at 2008-2009 levels. Five new board members were welcomed—Carol Weinshel, Easton Public Schools; Ed O'Hara, WCSU Library; Maribeth Breen, HC Hull Library, Clinton; Kevin McCarthy, Perrot Memorial Library, Greenwich; and Clara Ogbaa, Gateway Community College Library. And five retiring board members were thanked—Bernadette Baldino, Susan Burke, Candice Brown, Carl Antonucci and Keith Stetson. Roundtable Chairs were recognized (and given, in the spirit of the evening, a CLC wine stopper), and the Jan Gluz Cooperative Spirit Award was given to the Green Valley Libraries of Middlesex County. Colin McEnroe hit just the right note as keynote speaker, and the board baskets were better than ever!

To those of you new to the CLC Roundtable Family—CLC looks forward to another great year of roundtable activity.

PREVIEW of CLC's Proposed 2009-2010 Professional Development Schedule

I will be on maternity starting the end of July. With that in mind, I wanted to touch base to pass on contact information to use during my absence. My co-worker Deb Zulick will be the primary roundtable contact during my leave. If you have any questions regarding roundtables, Deb can be reached at dzulick@ctlibrarians.org or 860.344.8777, ext. 102. We encourage CLC members to register for roundtables online at www.ctlibrarians.org so that co-chairs and hosting institutions can be adequately prepared with room requirements, beverages (if offered), adequate handouts and special attendee needs. With this in mind, I wish you all a fantastic upcoming roundtable season and look forward to being back by year's end!

The Latest CLC Discounts and News OCLC New Training Portal

The Donohue Group Updates

OCLC has a new Training Portal (http://training.oclc.org as of July 1, 2009. It will display OCLC-certified courses from all training partners across the United States.

The Donohue Group Continues CLC’s OCLC ILL Service

All of the courses listed on the Training Portal are available to anyone interested in learning more about using OCLC products and services. For questions regarding the OCLC Training Portal, call 800.848.5800, or e-mail training@oclc.org. For training opportunities offered by CLC, stay tuned to our website www.ctlibrarians.org for 2010-2011 Continuing Education offerings. OCLC is mailing the "Guide to Contacting OCLC Product Support and Training" with an insert that provides an overview of their new phone tree and business cards with the OCLC information. They plan to mail one package to the Head of Reference and Public Services as well as the Head of Technical Services for all US member libraries.

Media Circuit Fees Are Due Circuits are a means of expanding your library's media collections at minimal expense. Participating libraries join any of several circuits—video on DVD, audio on CD, FLIC (foreign language and independent cinema), and Playaways. Usually there is a one-time "buy-in" fee plus an annual fee, which CLC staff use to purchase and maintain collections in these areas. Participating libraries meet periodically—usually monthly or quarterly—to exchange or "rotate" packets of materials. Thus, the materials make a "circuit" around participating libraries, providing a continuously updated selection at each location. This program is particularly popular with smaller libraries and those with limited non-print budgets. For more info about circuits, contact Pattie Noren at pnoren@ctlibrarians.org.

Updates to the Book and Media Vendor Info in the June Issue of CONNtext • Baker & Taylor's new web address is www.baker-taylor.com. • Baker & Taylor Books: Non-Trade & Short Discount should be 13%. • We have been informed that the Playaway manufacturer has placed restrictions on several of our Playaway vendors prohibiting them from selling to school libraries. School libraries may purchase directly from Findaway World (makers of Playaway). Call Pattie Noren if you have questions.

The Donohue Group, Inc. (DGI), is pleased to announce that it will continue to provide OCLC ILL service to CLC members for 2009-2010. As of July 1, 2009, the price per request is $18.00. For more information contact The Donohue Group at 860.683.1647 or email ILL@dgiinc.com. Requests should be sent via email only. For complete information about this service, please visit www.ctlibrarians.org/services/ ill.shtml. New Service for CLC Member Libraries The Donohue Group announces a new service for CLC member libraries that offers cataloging and shelf-ready processing of all formats and batches of all sizes. The workflow is completely customizable, according to your local requirements. DGI has many years of experience working within local catalogs, consortia and OCLC on behalf of its library clients. DGI catalogers pay special attention to local cataloging practices, including shelflisting and uniform treatment of series. DGI also specializes in cataloging of materials in foreign languages, including but not limited to: Chinese, Japanese, Russian, Polish, Ukrainian, Kiswahili and several Western European languages. Return shipping costs are included. DGI envisions that this service will fill the need for cataloging and/or shelf-ready processing of items received from sources that do not offer cataloging (such as online or local book stores, donors, etc.). Just think of those long-lingering items that keep getting pushed to the back of the cataloging queue. DGI can help! For a price quote, contact Pat McCurdy-Crescimanno, Manager of Business Development at 860.683.1647 or email Pat at pmccurdy@dgiinc.com.

More News from CLC Websites for Libraries

I

s your library's website easy to navigate, attractive, interactive and allows patrons to access what they need? Is your library website easy to keep current? If the answer is NO, CLC has an exciting, cooperative service to offer. CLC is pleased to present an opportunity for member libraries to develop intuitive, interactive, beautifully designed web sites at an affordable price through our partner, Miranda Creative. Miranda Creative, Inc., a small but engaging communications firm in Eastern Connecticut, whose work building sites for a number of Connecticut libraries over the past several years has given them unique insight into libraries' needs. These websites are not offered as universal web templates. Cookie-cutter sites, while cost effective, would not allow your library to maintain a unique web presence that reflected its own charming personality. Instead, Miranda's staff will moderate a planning system to help your library staff better organize site goals and content prior to beginning production. An efficient design and development process that is cost-effective for CLC members will follow this session.
