CLC Pulls Out All the Stops at Meeting
A
good time was had by all at the vineyard during CLC’s annual meeting (we librarians know how to party, even in the middle of a state budget crisis!).
CLC Board Chair Roz Rubinstein kept the sixth annual meeting running on time, and 2009-2010 CLC dues were kept at 2008-2009 levels. Five new board members were welcomed—Carol Weinshel, Easton Public Schools; Ed O'Hara, WCSU Library; Maribeth Breen, HC Hull Library, Clinton; Kevin McCarthy, Perrot Memorial Library, Greenwich; and Clara Ogbaa, Gateway Community College Library. And five retiring board members were thanked—Bernadette Baldino, Susan Burke, Candice Brown, Carl Antonucci and Keith Stetson. Roundtable Chairs were recognized (and given, in the spirit of the evening, a CLC wine stopper), and the Jan Gluz Cooperative Spirit Award was given to the Green Valley Libraries of Middlesex County. Colin McEnroe hit just the right note as keynote speaker, and the board baskets were better than ever!

Library Happenings and Member News The New Haven Public Library honored the winners of the first annual Poetry Contest at Starbucks on the Green on Saturday, June 20. This was a Favorite Poem Project event in collaboration with CLC and the International Festival of Arts and Ideas. CLC provided Robert Pinsky's Favorite Poem Project anthology as prizes for adult and teen contest winners! Left: A teen reads her winning poem at the contest. Twelve libraries in Eastern CT are collaborating on The Connecticut Authors Trail. Twenty-one CT authors will give talks at each of the libraries culminating with a grand finale at the Mohegan Sun's Cabaret Theatre on September 24 at 6:30 pm. Authors Trail audience members have their "passport" stamped at each event. Those who have all the stamps are invited to a Meet and Greet at the finale with authors Bruce Weinstein and Mark Scarbrough. Visit http:// sites.google.com/site/connecticutauthortrail/ for details.
The Brookfield Library's book cart drill team (above) strutted its stuff at in the town's Memorial Day parade. As part of its training day, the Hamden Library's staff participated in a "You Must Have Been a Beautiful Baby Contest" by displaying their baby photos. LTA Tracy Nista identified 17 of the 27 entries correctly and won a $25 gift certificate. Fish Tales, Tugs and Sails is a free festival for children with children's authors, illustrators, entertainment, activities, boats and marine life! The event takes place on Saturday, July 25 from 11 am - 5 pm (rain or shine) at New London's Waterfront Park. Admission is free. Trumbull Public Library staffers Donna Soucy, Mary Rogers, Louis Sheehy, and Walter Dembroski showed camaraderie and support at the Wilton Library's state library budget info session.
Academic Library guys Carl Antonucci of Capital CC and Ben Ide of University of Hartford welcomed Ravil Veli of Asnuntuck CC, who comes to Connecticut from New York State. The public libraries in the five communities surrounding Candlewood Lake: Brookfield, Danbury, New Fairfield, New Milford and Sherman, are launching a bi-annual region-wide summer reading event, One Book, One Lake. The book chosen for the program debut is Bill Bryson's A Walk in the Woods, his humorous, informative, and at times depressing account of his attempt to hike the Appalachian Trail. Full details about the 40 scheduled program events are available at www.onebookonelake.org. The Hartford Medical Society Historical Library has a new home at the University of Connecticut Health Center in Farmington and a new librarian, Jennifer Miglus (shown in the newly-housed library). Wethersfield's library board, friends, and town officials honored retiring Assistant Director Liz Kirkpatrick at a reception in the new library's community room. Laurie Averill, Library/Media specialist at Catherine M. McGee School in Berlin, was selected as Berlin's 2010 Teacher of the Year. Suffield High School's Library/Media Specialist, Kristin Johnson, was nominated for Teacher of the Year for Suffield Public Schools. Wilton's State Rep. Peggy Reeves and Wilton Library Director Kathy Leeds fielded questions at the info session on the state library budget, one of many held around the state in June.

Happenings and Member News The Derby Neck Library held it's first red carpet, black tie affair for the premier of CSI Derby Neck, a movie written, directed and filmed by several teen patrons. In attendance were the stars, including therapy dog Sandy, who portrayed the intrepid police dog (in uniform no less!). Copies are available for sale and checkout at the library.
2009 CASL Award Winners
Southington Library is encouraging adults to read this summer with the Reads that Refresh Adult Program. Over 100 adults registered for the first drawing of a gift certificate to a local business. Readers may enter each week and every entry received will be included in a Grand Prize drawing on August 28.

The Donohue Group Updates
OCLC has a new Training Portal (http://training.oclc.org as of July 1, 2009. It will display OCLC-certified courses from all training partners across the United States.
The Donohue Group Continues CLC’s OCLC ILL Service
All of the courses listed on the Training Portal are available to anyone interested in learning more about using OCLC products and services. For questions regarding the OCLC Training Portal, call 800.848.5800, or e-mail training@oclc.org. For training opportunities offered by CLC, stay tuned to our website www.ctlibrarians.org for 2010-2011 Continuing Education offerings. OCLC is mailing the "Guide to Contacting OCLC Product Support and Training" with an insert that provides an overview of their new phone tree and business cards with the OCLC information. They plan to mail one package to the Head of Reference and Public Services as well as the Head of Technical Services for all US member libraries.
Media Circuit Fees Are Due Circuits are a means of expanding your library's media collections at minimal expense. Participating libraries join any of several circuits—video on DVD, audio on CD, FLIC (foreign language and independent cinema), and Playaways. Usually there is a one-time "buy-in" fee plus an annual fee, which CLC staff use to purchase and maintain collections in these areas. Participating libraries meet periodically—usually monthly or quarterly—to exchange or "rotate" packets of materials. Thus, the materials make a "circuit" around participating libraries, providing a continuously updated selection at each location. This program is particularly popular with smaller libraries and those with limited non-print budgets. For more info about circuits, contact Pattie Noren at pnoren@ctlibrarians.org.

DGI catalogers pay special attention to local cataloging practices, including shelflisting and uniform treatment of series. DGI also specializes in cataloging of materials in foreign languages, including but not limited to: Chinese, Japanese, Russian, Polish, Ukrainian, Kiswahili and several Western European languages. DGI envisions that this service will fill the need for cataloging and/or shelf-ready processing of items received from sources that do not offer cataloging (such as online or local book stores, donors, etc.). o complement all that Connecticut's libraries are already doing to assist residents in their job searches, CLC is launching JobNow. This online chat resource will help people review their resumes and cover letters and practice interviewing online. JobNow, powered by Brainfuse, provides live interactive online help combined with online resources to guide your patrons through the necessary tasks to get a job.
