Library Happenings and Member News Yes, that would be our very own Art Meyers of Russell Library (Middletown), telling stories at the Alexandra Public Library in New Zealand! (No, not a part time job; Art and his wife were down under visiting their children and grandchildren this spring.) The Noah Webster Library (West Hartford) recently hosted "Light the Day," a special event for the Light One Little Candle Foundation, a non-profit that provides new children's books to cancer centers across the country. The library is the donation location for the CT partner hospitals. Right: Heather Baker, Canton's Children's Librarian, accompanied by her husband on guitar, entertained many families with her stories and songs. For more info visit www.lightonelittlecandle.org. Middlesex County is going green! The libraries are partnering with the Middlesex County Community Foundation in the How Green Is my Valley project, ready to kick off this fall. Two wonderful volunteers have stepped up to co-chair the project: Eileen Branciforte, Director of the Cromwell Belden Public Library and Janet Nocek, Director of Portland Public Library. Above: Clinton’s Library Director Maribeth Breen with MCCF's President Cynthia Clegg. Ivoryton Library has just finished a successful six week series of opera programs funded by a grant from the Middlesex County Community Foundation. Congratulations to Library Director Robbie Storms for hosting SRO crowds throughout the series. The Phoebe Griffin Noyes Library (Old Lyme) recently celebrated Phoebe's 211th birthday with a welcome party for new residents. Every family in attendance received a welcome bag of information about the town and local businesses. Phoebe herself made an appearance (Mary Dangremond), welcoming new residents with David Winer, President of the Board of Trustees.
The Wethersfield Library looks forward to a grand re-opening this fall in all three floors of the renovated building. Costs have risen over the four years of the project, and there's not going to be enough to cover all the library's furnishing needs. The Friends of the Library and the Library Board have undertaken a spring fundraising campaign to raise $40,000 to complete the furnishings plan. Above: The Lions Club presents a $500 check to the fundraising campaign. (l to r) Greg Curtin, Library Board Chair; Tom Leonard, Lions Club Treasurer, and Bob Hirbour, Lions Club President. Helen Keller Middle School (Easton) was named one of the top-performing schools in the Governor's 2007 Summer Reading Challenge. HKMS Director of Learning Resources and Technology, Carol Weinshel, said, "This is such great news because reading is so important to student learning." (l to r) Marion Carlson, Marie Mas, Joan Parker, an unidentifed Commissioner, Gina DeVoto (student), Ken Wiggin, Carol Weinshel and Lisa Mellen. As part of the Avon Library's celebration of National Library Week, performer Patricia Carr "walked among the people" as Queen Elizabeth I. She entertained more than 90 people with anecdotes, amusing tales, and facts from the Queen's royal life, and showed slides of Elizabethan England. Greg Farshtey, author of the popular Bionicle series, visited the Booth & Dimock Memorial Library (Coventry) as part of the library's Bionicle LEGOMania program. Children came from as far away as New Hampshire and New York to attend the event, which also included a LEGO-building contest and a Bionicle trivia contest. Simsbury Public Library will hold its Grand Reopening Celebration on Sunday, June 8 from 1-5 pm. The day kicks off with a Grand Parade. Events include library tours, programs by author Walter Wick and the Lutz Science Museum, bounce houses, pony rides, music and more. For more information call 860.658.7663, or visit www.simsburylibrary.info.

Happenings and Member News Tony Abbott, author of the popular children's series Secrets of Droon, visited Bethel Library on April 26. He talked to the kids about his books and how he goes through the process of writing them. The author also autographed copies of his books, which were available for sale, with all proceeds going to Bethel’s Capital Campaign. The staff at Cragin Memorial Library (Colchester) tried a new system for collecting late fees—a "donation" jar. Large plastic jars were placed on circulation desks with labels Library that read: "If You Have An Donations Overdue, What You Pay Is Up To You." This new approach has been a run-away success. Patrons are happy to drop money in the jar. Some people give money even if they don't have fines, or drop in more money than the amount they owe. Halfway through the fiscal year the library has collected more than half of the projected revenue from fines, which is far more than was collected last year at this time. It looks like the jars are there to stay. As 2008 is the 25th anniversary of New Haven native Karen Carpenter’s tragic death, a tribute was made to her at the Henry Carter Hull Library (Clinton) on April 10 with an engaging presentation by Bill Hosley, Director of the New Haven Museum and Historical Society. Hosley presented a multimedia show on the Carpenters’ history.

Comings and Goings . . . Margaret Borchers has been appointed the director of the Edith Wheeler Memorial Library in Monroe. Formerly the children's librarian at EWML, Margaret succeeds Rob Simon, who resigned to become the library director in Canton. "I'm thrilled with my new job because I have enjoyed working here," said Borchers, who began as the children's librarian in 2002. "I can do a great job for Monroe." David Bryant left his job as Library Director in New Canaan on April 12. He started his new job as Library Director in Rancho Mirage, California on April 21. There was a goodbye luncheon for Dave on April 9 at the Roger Sherman Inn in New Canaan. Above: The guest of honor with pals Les Kozerowitz and Jay Johnston. Right: Guests Alice Knapp and Sandy Ruoff. Eric Hansen will be leaving his post as Library Director in Ashford to be the State Library's Database Coordinator, joining the iCONN crew at the Middletown Library Service Center on Monday, May 12.

CLC News, Discounts and More Family Day Poster Contest
Welcome Donna Flatley!
Connecticut Family Day is a statewide event established in 1997 and first celebrated in 1998. Family Day is a collaboration of state agencies and community organizations to plan events that honor and celebrate Connecticut families. It is observed in September and October, with community activities held across the state. This year's Family Day theme is "Families—Connecticut's Greatest Resource."
There is a new voice on the other end of the CLC line; it belongs to Donna Flatley, our new Office and Fiscal Manager. Some of you from east of the river may remember Donna from her days as the resident "techie" at Eastern CT Libraries. Donna is one of those people who can do anything, and we are very lucky to have her with us. Donna will be working three days a week, usually Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday, with our web librarian Christine Sarrazin coming into the office on Wednesday; the rest of us, Chris, Deb, and Kirsten, will be pitching in on the phones on Friday. It's that multitasking again!
This year there will be a Connecticut Family Day Youth Poster Design Contest. Three winning designs will be incorporated into the 2008 Family Day posters, website and other official Family Day materials. Winners will be selected from three age categories: Elementary School, Middle School and High School. Each of the three winners will receive $200 and a family weekend getaway in Connecticut thanks to our partner, the Connecticut Commission on Culture and Tourism. Visit www.ctlibrarians.org for contest rules.

Wikis for Libraries with Dan Ream Monday, June 2 • 1-4 pm • Groton Public Library Wikis are defined as collaborative websites whose content can be edited by anyone who has access. Most famous of these is the Wikipedia, which calls itself "The free encyclopedia that anyone can edit," at http:// en.wikipedia.org. This workshop will look at wikis from several perspectives—as reference tools, with both strengths and weaknesses, and as collaborative working tools used by libraries and other organizations in internal operations. Museum Pass List Updated for 2008
M
useum Passes are a unique and popular service for libraries to offer their patrons. If your library offers Museum Passes, be sure to see CLC's Museum Pass List, updated for 2008. This one-stop shopping list conveniently provides all the pass details and contact info for over 50 museums, science centers and historic sites across southern New England. Visit www.ctlibrarians.org to download a copy. Great idea! To promote their Museum Passes, David Boudinot, a librarian at the Henry Carter Hull Library, coordinated a series of museum programs. Outreach and educational coordinators from area museums visited the library with their entertaining and educational programming. These events were a hit with HCH's patrons, and their Museum Pass circ stats saw an increase. "Borrowing" this idea, we've added a "Museum" search field to the LROC. While updating their pass info, museums were also asked to upload their program info to the LROC. If you're looking for high quality, educational programming at your library, visit the LROC and select the "Museum" category. Check it out today!
