Back to School We All Go!
S
ummer's eight weekends have come and gone, and this fall brings many opportunities to learn, connect, and retool with your colleagues. Here is just a sampling of what we have to look forward to in Connecticut (besides the leaves and the high cost of fuel oil!). The starter is CLC's Fall Management Conference for Public and Academic Library Directors on Tuesday, September 16 from 9:00 to 3:15 at the New Haven Lawn Club. We are bringing in the best of both out-of-state and homegrown talent for this one, with sessions on technology, human resources, leadership, and the future. Sign up at www.ctlibrarians.org/#homeManagement. CLC/OCLC Direct Training kicks off with the very popular Dan Ream, Director of Library Outreach & Distance Education at Virginia Commonwealth University. CLC News, Discounts and More Safety and Security Program Scenes
CLC Dues Are Due
The Library Safety and Security Program co-sponsored by CSL and CLC at (the all new and beautiful!) Wallingford PL was a big hit. Panelists representing mental health and law enforcement professionals as well as library personnel spoke with the sold-out audience about how to make the library safe for staff and patrons.
It's that time of year! Remember that CLC is a statewide library cooperative whose operations depend on both an annual state grant and member libraries' dues and fees. So do the right thing—be cost-conscious, be informed, be cooperative, and pay your dues today! The final deadline for 08-09 dues payments is September 17, 2008.
Photos (clockwise from top): Susan Hansen (West Hartford PL), Sarah Marek, Coleen Sturken, and Lynn Johnson-Corcoran (all of CCSU); Karen Worrall and Elaine Palmer (Torrington PL); Maura Ritz (Fairfield PL), Paula Keegan (Bridgeport PL) and Bernadette Baldino (Easton PL), who was also on the panel. Library Mini Golf Is Launched Since the inaugural event at the Trumbull Public Library in 2006, several libraries across the country have embraced the idea of transforming their library into a miniature golf course for a day as a fundraising event. The continuing enthusiasm for this idea has led to the formation of a non-profit organization dedicated to helping libraries host tournaments across the country. Library Mini Golf now offers to sell or lease miniature golf courses designed to be used in libraries and will supply all necessary equipment for every event. Course design services and full project management of your tournament are also available. There are no upfront costs and every library is guaranteed a substantial profit. Most tournaments yield between $10,000 and $25,000 for the library. For more information visit www.libraryminigolf.org, or contact Rick Bolton at 203.375.3432.

LROC Performer Spotlight Eric and Dee Hansen
Author Mitali Perkins
Eric and Dee Hansen—Lute and Soprano. Dee is a soprano and Chair of Graduate Music Education at The Hartt School, University of Hartford. Eric was a professional bassist and lutenist for more than 12 years who performed with nationally known artists before he became the Electronic Resources Coordinator with iCONN.org. He continues to perform on the lute. Programs: A Renaissance Christmas—Eric and Dee perform Renaissance settings of beloved Christmas carols, and a few charming surprises too. Love Hath Wings: English Love Songs of Shakespeare’s Time—When set to music, luscious and provocative Elizabethan poetry come to life in these historically informed performances of works by Dowland, Campion, Johnson and others. Contact Eric or Dee at 860.533.9332.
Mitali Perkins has spent most of her life crossing borders. Born in Calcutta, India, she soon learned to live up to her name, which means "friendly" in the Bangla language— because her family moved so often. Reading always helped her adjust to new places. "Stories were my lifeline, my rock, my stability," she says. "They were what I clutched for balance in that sometimes narrow place between cultures." After studying political science at Stanford and public policy at U.C. Berkeley, Mitali taught at the middle school, high school and college levels. When she began to write fiction, her protagonists were often strong female characters trying to bridge different cultures. Mitali enjoys visiting schools and libraries to discuss "books between cultures" and the life-changing power of story. Contact Mitali at mitaliperk@yahoo.com, or visit her website at www.mitaliperkins.com.
