Management Conference Inspires
C
LC's fall management conference on September 16 was a good day filled with moments like these: Wesleyan’s Barbara Jones, recipient of the 2007 Downs Award for Intellectual Freedom, looked out and applauded Barbara Bailey for her 2006 Downs Award. Westlake Ohio’s Andrew Mangels pitched Bill George’s True North as a way to develop staff leaders. Villanova Library Director Joe Lucia talked Open Source and Villanova’s own VUFind. Jeff Jones of Ohio's State Library wowed the crowd with an eye-opening look at the four generations now in the workplace. ALA’s Keith Fiels sent us off with a response to those who would question the future of libraries, “We have inherited fully functioning institutions; it is our responsibility to see that they prosper." For a look at some of the day's presentations, including Jeff Jones' generational differences quiz, visit www.ctlibrarians.org.

The Red Reading Room was dedicated (as a complete surprise!) to Library Director Sandy Ruoff. Above: Two Shoreline Sandys—Sandy Long from Scranton Library in Madison congratulating Sandy Ruoff. The Stratford Library Teen Department and its popular Creative Writing Workshop celebrated the 10th anniversary of the literary youth group with the publication of the 4th edition of their literary magazine, Varied Voices. It was also the 10th year that the workshop received a Youth-as-Resources grant from Stratford Community Services to assist with the publication. This fall, join the town of Clinton in a series of Our Town, One Read events which illuminate themes from Caroline B. Cooney's page-turner, Diamonds in the Shadow. Windsor Public Library's 2008 Summer Reading Program theme was Reading Saves the Day. Children became superheroes by reading or listening to 5,173 books this summer to earn the $500 earmarked by the Windsor Library Association for Heifer International. In addition, families matched their children's "reading money" and donated an additional $125 for a total of $625 which will be used to purchase 1 pig, 1 goat, 3 chickens, 1 llama, 1 sheep and a share of a heifer. The participants were all very excited and happy to combine reading with helping struggling families all over the world.

Specials from WALDO ProQuest Entrepreneurship
Books24x7
Entrepreneurship is one of the most talked about areas of study today; however, information to support study, practice and teaching is widely scattered. In addition, user needs go beyond traditional research and education tools and must include practical tools and information useful in starting and growing successful businesses.
ITPro Collection Adds Oracle Press Titles
Regardless if you are a scholar researching entrepreneurial studies or if you are a practicing entrepreneur looking to start or grow your own business, the most-coveted resources are often in multiple locations, incomplete, or unavailable. It can be challenging to navigate uncharted waters, but invaluable to learn from the experiences of those before you. ProQuest Entrepreneurship provides solutions to these problems by offering a central access point to a variety of discovery and advisory tools specific to the needs of entrepreneurship.
Oracle Press is the publisher of the "official" books on Oracle technologies covering topics such as Oracle 11g and 10g, Oracle Applications, and exam and certification preparation guides. All current Oracle Press titles have now been added to the ITPro Collection. As new Oracle Press books are published, they will be automatically added to ITPro. Notifications of new titles are available through email or RSS feeds.

LROC Performer Spotlight Kenneth Quesnel
Samantha Schutz
Libraries are buzzing about MUSICal stARTS! The program addresses ways to correctly introduce music and movement into a young person's life. Quesnel’s MUSICal stARTS program for early childhood focuses on 3 major areas: singing in tune, keeping a beat, and moving artistically to music. Children will be introduced to songs, rhymes, and games that will nourish their natural musical gifts at this ever important stage of development. This extremely popular program has been highly publicized and praised throughout Connecticut. Younger age classes and parent involvement classes also available! Reserve your session now for fall 2008, or winter 2009! Call 860.508.7725, or email about a booking at crusnak@optonline.net.
I Don't Want to Be Crazy is a true story of growing up, breaking down, and coming to grips with a psychological disorder. When Samantha Schutz first left home for college, she was excited by the possibilities. At first, she reveled in the independence—but as pressures increased, she began to suffer anxiety attacks that would leave her mentally shaken and physically incapacitated. Thus began a hard road of discovery and coping, powerfully rendered in this poetry memoir. Samantha has won numerous awards for her work including: ALA Quick Picks for Reluctant Readers 2006 and New York Public Library's Best Books for the Teen Age 2006. She is available to do a reading or talk with readers (ages 13 and up) about her writing process, the impact that publishing her memoir has had on her life, or the verse novel genre. Contact samanthaschutz@hotmail.com, or www.samanthaschutz.net.
