Trendspotting IV Recap
F
our out-of-state and two in-state speakers made for a full day at the University of Hartford on January 9 for Trendspotting IV (and it didn't snow, we could all find a parking spot, and lunch was fab!). These excellent presentations are available at www.ctlibrarians.org/#homeTrendspotting. Marshall Breeding (Director for Innovative Technology and Research, Vanderbilt University Libraries; Editor, Library Technology Guides; Columnist, Computers in Libraries; Contributing Editor, Smart Libraries Newsletter) shared the results of his 2008 Perceptions report (www.librarytechnology.org/ perceptions2008.pl.) The answers to this annual survey led Marshall to conclude that, although some proprietary ILS products are seeing significant numbers of library defections and competition from new companies involved with open source ILS, the open source products and companies are now struggling to meet expectations. Joe Lucia, Director of the Falvey Memorial Library at Villanova University, is an avowed "open source evangelist." His presentation was entitled "Accident and Intention: Open Source, VuFind, & the Emerging Environment for Library Technology." Joe sees the emergence of open source software with the "library space" enhancing the library as a center for participatory culture and collaborative enterprise. David Lindahl gave a more conceptual presentation about the Extensible Catalog (XC) being developed through a Mellon Foundation grant at the University of Rochester. XC's vision is to make a connection between metadata and end users and to take a collaborative approach to the library web presence. The development team expects to be able to launch a beta version this summer.
Photos, clockwise from top left: Joe Lucia; UHart's Randi AshtonPritting, Sharon Brettschneider of the CT State Library and UHart's Ben Ide; David Lindahl and Marshall Breeding; CT State Library's Sharon Clapp with Roberta Woods. A most refreshing speaker. was Roberta
Woods, who drove herself down from New Hampshire's Franklin Pierce School of Law. She chairs NELLCO (the New England Law Library Consortium), whose IMLS-funded Universal Search Solution (USS) project was born out of a need for a federated search that would encourage users to go beyond their research "anchors" (Westlaw, Lexis and Google). The law librarians developed USS to enhance scholarship by steering researchers to relevant "boutique" resources.
Connecticut’s own Director of Library Development, Sharon Brettschneider, gave an update on planning for a Connecticut Statewide Integrated Library System (ILS). U Hart's Ben Ide gave an account of their involvement in WALDO's open source ILS project using Koha, supported by LibLime. Turn to page 3 to see more photos from Trendspotting IV. . .

Library Happenings and Member News Whatta Day @ the Library! Whatta day for all Americans, but in Connecticut our public libraries were the places we went to celebrate together on January 20, 2009. Libraries around the state—libraries with new buildings like Wilton, Hartford, and Guilford, as well as those who have been around for a while like Clinton, New Canaan, Middletown, New Haven and Waterford—hosted the inauguration ceremonies in their community rooms with big screen TVs. Whether the communal inaugural viewing was pre-planned and publicized, or spur-of-the-moment, hundreds came to share the day with their fellow Americans @ the library! The inauguration of Barack Obama was watched “live” at Waterford Public Library on its public television. Spontaneous applause erupted when President Obama took the oath of office and everyone felt they were watching history in the making. What better place to do that than the library! Wilton Library showed the inauguration on their 12x12 projection screen in hi-def. It was standing room only in the Brubeck room, with library patrons overflowing into the lobby. Director Kathy Leeds said, "It was almost like being in DC—but much, much warmer! We had such a great time with close to 100 participants during the inaugural activities.” Photos, top to bottom: A display at Bill Memorial Library (Groton); Patrons gather to watch the inauguration at New Haven Free PL; Russell Library in Middletown; and Hartford PL. FLAG (Fairfield Library Administrators Group) met in December at New Canaan Public Library to hear author Jan Yager discuss her book, Work Less, Do More (which we all agreed was a wonderful idea!).
One of the most popular programs at Westport Library is Reading to Rover, which offers 15-minute appointments for children of all ages to practice reading aloud to dogs. The volunteer dogs and their people are certified as pet therapy teams. In other news, the library hosted a program with actress Marlo Thomas on January 17 to celebrate the 35th anniversary of her book, Free to Be...You and Me. The book broke new ground by telling boys and girls to celebrate who they were and all the possibilities of who they could be. A new web-based resource helps library advocates make the case for libraries during times of economic downturn. The "Advocating in a Tough Economy" toolkit is available at www.ala.org/tougheconomytoolkit . The toolkit contains information on how to work with decision-makers, ways to work with the media, and talking points to help libraries articulate their role in tough economic times. Southington Library and Museum has selected Carlos Eire's book Waiting for Snow in Havana , winner of the 2003 National Book Award in Nonfiction, for the Southington Reads 2009 program in March. In January the display cases at the Norwalk Public Library were filled with Raggedy Ann and her friends in an extensive exhibition of rare books, original illustrations and ephemera from the private collection of Gil and Kathleen Rodriguez, owners of GilAnn Books in Darien. Raggedy Ann was part of the great imagination of Norwalk resident Johnny Gruelle, who was an artist, political cartoonist, and writer of children's books. Christine Baker, author of Why She Plays: The World of Women's Basketball, will do a talk and signing at Whittemore Library in Naugatuck on Wednesday, March 4 at 6:30 pm. The library will also hold a raffle for a mini-basketball signed by Connecticut Sun players. Proceeds from the raffle will benefit the library. Christine Baker has indicated she would love to do more appearances at local libraries. If you are interested to find out more about Ms. Baker, or wish to contact her, email John Wiehn at johnw@biblio.org.

Happenings and Member News Before a capacity crowd at Waterford Town Hall are First Selectman Dan Steward, Waterford PL's board president Greg Benoit, author Wally Lamb, and librarians Roz Rubinstein and Judy Liskov. Milford Library received a grant from the Community Foundation of Greater New Haven for programming for women who are retired or nearing retirement. There are over 100 women on the mailing list and over 40 of them gather each month to share ideas and feelings. From this core group, the women have formed smaller groups that meet for lunch, go to movies, play cards, etc. Milford Library has benefited in many ways from this group— these women are natural library-boosters, and there are more across the state interested in forming groups in their towns. For more info contact Milford Library's Nancy Abbey at 203.783.3307 or nabbey@ci.milford.ct.us. Guilford Library staffers take time out to plan for services now that their beautiful new space is completed. Clockwise from front left: Peggy Day, Pattie Baldwin, Doris Andrews, Suellen Heinrich, Nancy Wardell and Janet Linsley.
With Great Sadness. Perrot Memorial Library, as well as our whole library community, suffered a terrible tragedy on January 28 when librarians Kate McClelland (top) and Kathy Krasniewicz (right) were killed in an accident on their way to the airport in Denver following the ALA midwinter conference. The NEA’s new report, Reading on the Rise: A New Chapter in American Literacy, states that the proportion of overall literary reading increased among virtually all age, ethnic and demographic categories since 2002. The increase was most dramatic among 18-to-24-year-olds.

Healthy Messages Program The Connecticut Department of Health, The American Heart Association, CLA and CLC are joining up to offer a series of Healthy Messages @ Your Library! This exciting new statewide initiative will help develop relationships between our libraries and state and local health agencies to help keep Connecticut’s citizens informed and healthy. Libraries will receive a monthly email update with Health Observances for that particular month. Libraries can contact liaisons directly if interested in related programming and marketing, including: "American Heart Month," "National Wear Red Day," "National Immunization Month," and "Fruit and Veggies Month." This new partnership creates more opportunities for health education programming and clinics in libraries. Stay tuned for continuing news on this exciting partnership.
Book Time with Ronald McDonald During this free 40-minute program, children help Ronald McDonald as he uses a creative mix of music and magic to reinforce the value of books, visiting the library, and the enjoyment that comes from reading. He and his friend "Stoogie," a sock puppet bookworm, will also introduce children to "book time," the time we set aside each day to read. "It's Book Time with Ronald McDonald!" was developed with top reading experts and has the full endorsement of Get Caught Reading, a leading national reading campaign. NEW: A Friendship Adventure with Ronald McDonald This latest show focuses on teaching children about friendship, cooperation, active play and anti-bullying. Ronald McDonald engages students through lively music, fun magic, and scenarios which not only lightheartedly demonstrate the seriousness of bullying, but show children how to handle difficult situations where bullying occurs and ultimately, teach them that we're all in a Friendship Adventure together! These programs are sponsored by the Connecticut and Western Massachusetts McDonald's Owner/Operator Association with support from the CLC as part of McDonald's Active Achievers, a public/ private partnership providing free educational resources to libraries and schools. If you are interested in more information email McDs@ShowtimeProductions.us or call 860.875.1044.
CLC/OCLC Direct Meeting The CLC/OCLC Direct users' meeting was held on January 14 at Bridgeport Public Library. George Needham, OCLC's Vice President for member services, and Ellen Mizio, OCLC Eastern's new Training and Support Coordinator, gave updates on OCLC's direction for the coming year as well as trends in training (their presentations are available at www.ctlibrarians.org). Libraries shared their concerns about the need for OCLC bills to be reviewed in light of decreased cataloging. Our libraries want to see their bills be more reflective of the work they are actually doing rather than the three-year average. The training team will meet this spring with Ellen Mizio from OCLC Eastern to plan 2009-2010 training opportunities. If you have any input or would like to be part of the training team, contact CLC's Chris Bradley at cbradley@ctlibrarians.org.
