Dr. Demetrick “Tre” Pennie holds a Doctorate of Education Degree in Higher Education from Texas Tech University. He previously served as a college professor for two universities, specializing in Criminal Justice, Terrorism, Ethics and Cultural Diversity. He is also a 20-year-veteran police sergeant with the Dallas Police Department. Prior to joining the police force, Pennie served four years of honorable service in the U.S. Army as an artillery specialist. He strongly values philanthropy and is the executive director of three non-profit organizations that promote: education and advocacy for law enforcement, community engagement, and provides financial assistance and social events to the families of “fallen” officers – Dallas Fallen Officer Foundation, Texas Fallen Officer Foundation, and National Fallen Officer Foundation. Pennie’s passion for public service and advocacy was cultivated from personal experiences early in life. Pennie was raised in a non-traditional household having his grandmother, Allene Pennie, as his greatest influence. Pennie’s grandmother was a devout Christian and lifelong member of Greater Zion Baptist Church. Because of her early influences, Pennie accepted Jesus Christ as his personal Lord and Savior at an early age.
Pennie grew up in the historic and predominately-Black neighborhood of Acres Homes in Houston, Texas. During the early 90’s, which defined Pennie’s most formable years, the community was stricken with poverty, drugs and violence. He explained that although citizens were being victimized at a high rate, police intervention was wholeheartedly rejected by the community because of deep-seated fears of police oppression. In 1989, the gun violence and drug epidemic became so bad that it garnered the attention of the White House. At the age of 12, Pennie recalled sitting in a ditch at a neighborhood park called Carver Park and watching as United States President George H.W. Bush launched his “War on Drugs” in Acres Homes.

Ironically,
at
the
age
of
16,
Pennie’s
perspective on life changed after witnessing his female cousin, Jacqueline Smith, get shot and killed days before her wedding. Tormented by the tragedy, Pennie grew angry with his family’s reluctance to cooperate with the investigation, but appreciated the officers’ professionalism in solving the crime. That experience had a profound impact on Pennie’s life and ultimately inspired him to become a police officer. During that same period, Pennie’s struggle with the tragedy was overshadowed by a moral crisis – one that would weigh heavily on his religious convictions. As adolescents, Pennie and his teenage girlfriend learned that they would soon be expecting a child. Because they were both young, inexperienced, and lacked the

necessary resources to raise a child, members of the girl’s family wanted her to have an abortion. Pennie and his teenage girlfriend valued the life of
their unborn child and strongly contested the idea. Committed to protecting his family, at the age of 17, Pennie graduated early from high school, married his girlfriend and entered the U.S. Army.
In 1996, Pennie and his newly-formed family settled more than 3800 miles away on a military base in Hawaii. Unfortunately, due to family stressors associated with military life, the young marriage would only last a few years. Nevertheless, both parents would go on to witness their son graduate from college and become a microbiologist.
Pennie emphasizes that his respect for the “sanctity of life” has afforded him an opportunity to witness his son flourish and now have an impact of the world through his work in medicine.

joined
the
Dallas
Police
Department,
where he has served the community for more than two decades. Throughout his career, he has received numerous awards and has even chaired a committee in the selection of the new police chief. No stranger to adversity, Pennie has learned many lessons throughout his career – one being learning to face controversy head on.
As a young police officer, Pennie’s faith in God was tested after being accidentally shot in leg while inspecting a family member’s faulty weapon. Pennie explained that Pennie has always valued academia. As a kid, he read books and studied history to better understand life. He expressed that although he has faced significant hardships in life, he has always found refuge in education. He stated,

TRE PENNIE: As a Black conservative, I am often criticized for not being a liberal Democrat. Unfortunately, the Democrat Party has exploited the good-will of the minority community to promote leftist and socialist agendas that do not align with my minority beliefs. I am firmly against government-dependence and race-identity politics which have hindered progress in my community

ANIL: What has a Trump Administration done to help preserve law and order?
TRE PENNIE: President Trump has restored law enforcement’s access to tactical equipment needed for riots such armored vehicles. He has systematically dismantled the violent street-gang MS-13. He is aggressively fighting to combat opioid and drug abuse by ordering the DOJ to prosecute medical professionals for participating in healthcare fraud and drug schemes. President Trump is also fighting to protect conservative speech on college campuses. These are all positions that I support wholeheartedly.
ANIL: What are your views on how to tackle gun crime in U.S.?
TRE PENNIE: I am a strong advocate for the 2nd Amendment. I will always fight to protect America’s right to self-defense. As a veteran police sergeant and a researcher on mitigating the outcomes of shooting attacks in America, I believe that gun violence is more directly linked to behavioral and social issues such as: mental health, crime and nefarious influences on social media than guns themselves. My approach to tackling gun violence is to first address the conditions that facilitate crime.
ANIL: Will the Republican Party win back control in Congress?
TRE PENNIE: I believe that the Republican Party will win back control in Congress because the Democrats have moved too far to the left with their socialist agenda. Based on the fact that the Democrat Party has placed tribal politics ahead of the interest of this country, I believe that many voters will vote Republican out of frustration with the Democrats’ politics. Unfortunately, at this time nothing is getting done in Congress.
ANIL: If the Republican Party wins back control in Congress, do you think Republican Lawmakers will roll back same-sex marriage law?
TRE PENNIE: No, I think that lawmakers now realize that those types of social arguments are distractions to progress and governance. As a pragmatic conservative who believes in the rule of law and limited government, I believe that morality discussions should be left to the Church. The federal government has no place in anyone’s personal life. My district is concerned about jobs, feeding their families, and being safe in their communities; this is where Congress should focus its efforts!
ANIL: Will the Republican Lawmakers help Trump abolish Obamacare?
TRE PENNIE: The jury is still out on this issue. I have followed the debate for a few years and many lawmakers have simply not been consistent in their decision-making on this issue.
