Might be time for a CTM truck at the shows all wrapped! With tonnage up, might be time to invest in a new Volvo. On page 6 is Bruce Querel from Querel Trailers with advice on buying a new trailer. Bruce and Richard are also available to let you know if your current trailer is compliant. It is better to find out now than at a coop some place. With RTAC you might be running with a deck that does not comply everywhere. Page 26 is Better Trucking Marketplace for the Better Trucker. With the price of fuel on the rise you would not believe the thousands you can put in your pocket with a few good products and tips. Oak Point Restaurant I need to mention again! If I am there you can have a cup on Dave! I enjoy seeing all my Brothers and Sisters on the road and feel great you enjoy our magazine. Your input is what makes CTM great!
Two Stories BOTH TRUE -
STORY NUMBER ONE Many years ago, Al Capone virtually owned Chicago . Capone wasn't famous for anything heroic. He was notorious for enmeshing the windy city in everything from bootlegged booze and prostitution to murder. Capone had a lawyer nicknamed "Easy Eddie." He was Capone's lawyer for a good reason. Eddie was very good! In fact, Eddie's skill at legal maneuvering kept Big Al out of jail for a long time. To show his appreciation, Capone paid him very well. Not only was the money big, but Eddie got special dividends, as well. For instance, he and his family occupied a fenced-in mansion with live-in help and all of the conveniences of the day. The estate was so large that it filled an entire Chicago City block. Eddie lived the high life of the Chicago mob and gave little consideration to the atrocity that went on around him. Eddie did have one soft spot, however. He had a son that he loved dearly. Eddie saw to it that his young son had clothes, cars, and a good education. Nothing was withheld. Price was no object. And, despite his involvement with organized crime, Eddie even tried to teach him right from wrong. Eddie wanted his son to be a better man than he was. Yet, with all his wealth and influence, there were two things he couldn't give his son; he couldn't pass on a good name or a good example. One day, Easy Eddie reached a difficult decision. Easy Eddie wanted to rectify wrongs he had done. He decided he would go to the authorities and tell the truth about Al "Scarface" Capone, clean up his tarnished name, and offer his son some semblance of integrity. To do this, he would have to testify against The Mob, and he knew that the cost would be great. So, he testified.
- and worth reading!!!!
Within the year, Easy Eddie's life ended in a blaze of gunfire on a lonely Chicago Street . But in his eyes, he had given his son the greatest gift he had to offer, at the greatest price he could ever pay. Police removed from his pockets a rosary, a crucifix, a religious medallion, and a poem clipped from a magazine. The poem reads: "The clock of life is wound but once, and no man has the power to tell just when the hands will stop, at late or early hour. Now is the only time you own.. Live, love, toil with a will. Place no faith in time. For the clock may soon be still." STORY NUMBER TWO World War II produced many heroes. One such man was Lieutenant Commander Butch O'Hare. He was a fighter pilot assigned to the aircraft carrier Lexington in the South Pacific. One day his entire squadron was sent on a mission. After he was airborne, he looked at his fuel gauge and realized that someone had forgotten to top off his fuel tank. He would not have enough fuel to complete his mission and get back to his ship. His flight leader told him to return to the carrier. Reluctantly, he dropped out of formation and headed back to the fleet. As he was returning to the mother ship, he saw something that turned his blood cold; a squadron of Japanese aircraft was speeding its way toward the American fleet. The American fighters were gone on a sortie, and the fleet was all but defenceless. He couldn't reach his squadron and bring them back in time to save the fleet. Nor could he warn the fleet of the approaching danger. There was only one thing to do. He must somehow divert them from the fleet.
Laying aside all thoughts of personal safety, he dove into the formation of Japanese planes. Wing-mounted 50 caliber's blazed as he charged in, attacking one surprised enemy plane and then another. Butch wove in and out of the now broken formation and fired at as many planes as possible until all his ammunition was finally spent. Undaunted, he continued the assault. He dove at the planes, trying to clip a wing or tail in hopes of damaging as many enemy planes as possible, rendering them unfit to fly. Finally, the exasperated Japanese squadron took off in another direction. Deeply relieved, Butch O'Hare and his tattered fighter limped back to the carrier. Upon arrival, he reported in and related the event surrounding his return. The film from the gun-camera mounted on his plane told the tale. It showed the extent of Butch's daring attempt to protect his fleet. He had, in fact, destroyed five enemy aircraft This took place on February 20, 1942 , and for that action Butch became the Navy's first Ace of W.W.II, and the first Naval Aviator to win the Medal of Honour. A year later Butch was killed in aerial combat at the age of 29. His home town would not allow the memory of this WW II hero to fade, and today, O'Hare Airport in Chicago is named in tribute to the courage of this great man. So, the next time you find yourself at O'Hare International, give some thought to visiting Butch's memorial displaying his statue and his Medal of Honour. It's located between Terminals 1 and 2. SO WHAT DO THESE TWO STORIES HAVE TO DO WITH EACH OTHER? Butch O'Hare was "Easy Eddie's" son. (Pretty cool, eh!) Drive Safe out there my friends and I look forward to seeing you on the road or yakking at you through CTM. Remember I would rather hear from you than about you! Happy Trails,,,,,,,,Dave

Meet Bruce Querel of Querel Trailers in Winnipeg Manitoba Canada.
Editors Tip of the Month
Bruce tells CTM in this new age of Trailer Purchasing, keep in mind, that your choice of trailer specs means a lot in terms of getting it right. Canadian RTAC (Roads and Transportation Association of Canada) means getting the right specs right, New or Used! The national RTAC standard covers such parameters as wheelbase, axle track, width, vehicle length, weight and height, supposedly to ensure fewer issues from province to province. Bruce states make sure your Trailer Supplier gets it right and knows all the regulations. Don’t make a purchase you will regret now or later.
6
Dave has dealt with Bruce Querel for years and found his knowledge of trailers and regulations are second to none. Querel has sold trailers across NA and are as close as your telephone for sales or advice. See the Ad in this month’s CTM on Pages 10 & 11 and if you are buying a trailer, pick up the telephone, and call Bruce or Richard from Querel today! Don’t be fooled or have regrets on your next trailer purchase. It’s too late at the chicken coop! Is your current skateboard RTAC compliant everywhere? Find out from Bruce!

$444,000 of Methamphetamine found in car In Calexico,California. Police officers along with assistance from U.S. Border Patrol agents, discovered 13.9 pounds of methamphetamine inside a vehicle and arrested a man following a routine traffic stop. A Calexico police officer was working Operation Stonegarden street interdiction when a man driving just south of the Highway 86 checkpoint was stopped for a traffic violation. The driver, Raul Zamaron, 56, of Mexicali, was acting nervous and not giving direct answers to the officer. The officer became suspicious and requested a U.S. Border Patrol canine unit which soon arrived. During further examination the canine alerted to the engine compartment of the red 2003 Dodge Dakota which Zamaron was driving. A subsequent search revealed 13.9 pounds of methamphetamine hidden inside the engine’s intake manifold. The drugs are estimated to be worth more than $444,000. An investigator from Calexico Police Department’s Border Crimes Unit and Det. Ceja responded and took possession of the narcotics as well as placed Zamaron into custody. He was then booked into Imperial County Jail on the felony charge of possession of a controlled substance with intent to sell.

Custom officers in Texas seize nearly $1.4 million dollars in Cocaine On February 27, 2013 in Brownsville, Texas, U.S. Customs and Border Protection Officers at the Brownsville and Matamoros International Bridge discovered cocaine valued at $1,372,800 hidden in a Ford Explorer.
Is this Drug Smuggling ever go By: Dawn Truell, President
CBP officers came in contact with a 2002 Ford Explorer being driven by a 52year-old man, identified as a United States citizen and resident of Brownsville, Texas. After a primary inspection, a CBP officer referred the Ford for a secondary examination. In secondary CBP officers discovered 21 packages hidden within the Explorer. CBP officers removed the packages containing approximately 19.47 kilograms (42.9 pounds) of cocaine. The cocaine from this seizure has an estimated street value of approximately $1.4 million. CBP officers arrested the driver and turned him over to Homeland Security Investigations special agents for further investigation. CBP officers seized the narcotics and the vehicle. February 28, 2013 in California right near the U.S. Marine Base Camp Pendleton, Border Patrol agents seized more than 16 pounds of methamphetamine in three separate stops at the checkpoint on Interstate 5. In the first of the three incidents on Thursday morning, Feb. 28 about 8 a.m., dogs sniffed out a piece of a luggage belonging to a 23-year-old U.S. citizen who was a bus passenger, according to the Border Patrol. Agents searched it and found two packages full of more than four pounds of the drug, worth an estimated street value of $81,000. About an hour later, agents questioned a 37-year-old Mexican citizen aboard a commuter van who Border Patrol officials said was displaying nervous behavior. Agents searched him and found more than seven pounds of methamphetamine, worth about $145,000, in three packages attached to his lower back and thighs, Border Patrol officials said. Around 10 a.m. Thursday, dogs inspecting another passenger bus alerted agents to the luggage of a 45-year-old U.S. citizen. Agents searched the luggage and found four packages of methamphetamine weighing just over five pounds and worth more than $100,000, authorities said.

CBSA seizes more than 4 kg of suspected heroin at Vancouver International Airport On February 1, 2013 CBSA officers examined a parcel arriving by air cargo from Vietnam. According to the declaration form, the parcel contained t-shirts, hats and nine tubs of name-brand coffee whitener. However, when officers opened the tubs, they detected a strong odour inconsistent with coffee whitener. Initial tests indicated the presence of heroin. In total, approximately 4.32 kilograms of suspected heroin was seized from this shipment At Air Cargo Operations, other recent drug seizures have included cocaine in copper pots, opium soaked in fabric, and steroids concealed within water heaters. Throughout Pacific Region in 2012, CBSA officers made nearly 4,300 drug seizures, keeping drugs off Canadian streets. CBSA seizes over 38 kilograms of opium at Toronto Pearson International Airport On January 28, 2013, border services officers conducted an examination on a shipment arriving from the Middle East. An X-ray examination revealed anomalies within the shipment of children’s toys. Approximately 38 kilograms of opium and 3 kilograms of heroin were discovered with a value of over $2.3 million and $1.2 million respectively. In 2012, CBSA officers working in the GTA region's airports, postal and cargo processing facilities seized over 132 kilograms of heroin with an estimated value of over $52.6 million and 97 kilograms of opium valued at nearly $5.8 million.
Now that I have scared you all with these recent drug busts, As the March Break approaches, many families will be escaping to southern destinations for fun in the sun. Here are a few helpful travel tips: • A passport is the preferable piece of identification for entry into Canada. Other acceptable identification includes an enhanced driver's licence, a birth certificate with accompanying photo ID such as a regular driver's licence, a permanent resident card, a citizenship card or a certificate of Indian status, and a NEXUS card. • Souvenirs can be a fun way to remember your trip abroad, but certain goods are prohibited from entering Canada, including some food, plant and animal products. • If you share custody of children and the other parent is not travelling with you, or if you are travelling with minors for whom you are not the parent or legal guardian, we recommend you carry a consent letter to provide authorization for you to take them on a trip and enter Canada. • Whether you are leaving or returning to Canada, declare all money or monetary instruments equal to or over CAN$10,000. • Consider applying for NEXUS for you and your family, and save time when entering Canada or the U.S. NEXUS is designed to expedite the border clearance process for low-risk, pre-approved travellers into Canada and the United States. Enrollment can take time so apply now for your summer travel plans. for further information on aiding In the fight against smuggling, terrorism, C-TPAT, FAST, PIP please contact;

Once again we hear that a trucker has been hit and killed while walking in a truck stop; this time it was a double tragedy as two truckers were killed four days apart at the Pilot Travel Center at exit 4 on Interstate 81 near White Pine, TN. W h i l e these types of accidents are not a daily occurrence, they do happen with some regularity mostly at night. What is going on in the truck stops that truckers are killed while walking across the lot? A combination of factors is most likely at fault, dark parking lots, wearing too dark of clothing by the pedestrian, both driver and pedestrian not paying attention, and last but not least; speeding through the truck stops by truck drivers. Sit in any truck stop and pay some attention and you will see all of these factors at work at any time. Truck stops, or as they prefer these days to be called, Travel Centers, are all feeling the hit of the economy and one way some are saving money is to cut down on the outside parking area lighting. Add to that factor that many drivers are coming into a lit area from driving in the dark and might not be able to see while they adjust from night vision and you have an accident of some sort waiting to happen.
Truck Stop Walking Safety
Truckers tend to wear darker clothing; dark blue jeans or other pants, darker T-shirts and in winter dark jackets and hats. The darker clothing makes sense to those who drive truck; a trucker’s clothing is a grease and road grime magnet. A trucker walking across the lot will blend into any shadows due to their clothing choices and will be totally non visible in many cases out of direct light. With all the talk about texting and driving, texting and walking is a real problem too and takes one’s attention from where they are walking. Other distractions are normal; having to rush to the bathroom, hungry, tired, stressed or pushed on time for a delivery/pickup are some that affects both drivers and walkers. A trucker coming into the truck stop is also thinking about getting into the fuel island or getting that parking spot along with the former distractions. Finally; it makes no sense, but there are times when a truck stop parking lot looks like a NASCAR track with trucks doing warm up laps. A truck whipping into a driveway or driving around the parking lot at 25-35 miles per hour equals a speeding torpedo and can do the same damage to walkers or even to other trucks. Tsk, Tsk. To save your life in any parking lot if you are going to be walking: Wear something light colored, put reflective tape on your jacket or hat or carry a small flash light that can be seen while you walk. Look before walking out from between two trucks or stepping out into the driving lanes.
Watch for other trucks backing up and never assume that they see you… wait out of the way or walk around them the other way. Give the truck the right of way unless the driver motions you to go ahead and then look before you clear their protection for any other trucks moving. Before walking in front of any truck that is idling, look up if the driver is in the seat and make eye contact with them. Wait to do any texting until you are inside or back in your truck. Keep your head up and your eyes moving while walking so you can see anyone that is driving near you. Do not get out of your truck if someone is getting ready to either back in or pull out of the space on your driver side and always use the three point entry or exit strategy. To avoid hitting someone who is walking: Slow that big rig down Mr. or Ms Truck Driver! Is that two seconds you save getting to that parking spot, into that fuel island or hitting the road worth anyone’s life? If it is, then you should have left sooner or not stopped as often and need to rethink your priorities. As you enter the truck stop take a quick look around for anyone who might be walking near your path of travel. If you are going to back up from the fuel islands or into a parking spot, make sure that there is no one behind you; get out and look works in the truck stop too. As you pull into or out of the fuel island or parking spot, take a second and look both ways carefully for anyone walking near your path of travel.
If you motion someone to walk in front of you while you stop, help them by watching for another truck that might come around you on the walker’s blind side; let them know if it is unsafe to proceed.
We truckers face enough dangers from everyone else on the roads and in the truck stops without having to worry about our brother and sister drivers running us over. All drivers need to take responsibility for each other’s safety while walking or driving in a truck stop or warehouse parking lot. Finally, we all have to have some respect for each other and show that respect by being courteous to each other especially when our lives are at risk when we are in the supposedly safe haven of a truck stop. Working together on this, we can avoid having to read of another report of a trucker hitting and killing another trucker in a truck stop; that would make my day, wouldn’t it yours?
Forrest Gump would say, “Safety is as Safety does”…don’t be as his famous saying goes, “Stupid is as Stupid does”, be a safer, smarter driver. Ya’ll be safe and I wish you peace and some serenity in your busy lives

Ship Happens! Shipping Wars’ Marc Springer of Snortn’ Boar Tra Monster Truck Knowing me is to know my love of cool trucks. So, when a 1996 Chevy Monster Truck headed to MudFest in Louisiana came up for bid on an episode of Shipping Wars, nothing got in my way. This $50,000-$60,000 vehicle required a few permits to get it from state to state, so it wasn’t easy. But once I was given a ride in this machine, it was well worth the trip. And no, letting air out of the tires would NOT have helped! Watch it again and tell me why not! Dare ya!
Over the past few years, Snortn’ Boar owner-operator Marc Springer has hauled some of the most head-turning loads found on uShip.com. And since he’s started appearing on A&E’s Shipping Wars last year, his loads have only gotten more diverse – some really challenging, some super heavy and some just plain cool. CTM recent sat down with Marc to find out his Top 10 coolest shipments of 2012 – and even a special one from 2009.
Evel Knievel Truck When I was a kid, I thought Evil Knievel was the coolest. His death-defying feats made him my one of my favorites, a legend, bigger than Elvis. When Evil’s 1974 original show truck and trailer came up for bid on uShip, I wanted to haul it at all costs. At 70-feet plus and 9-tons, and full of nostalgia, I was like a little kid while hauling this load around.
Spire of Fire This load was 7,000 lbs of fire-breathing, steel-framed sculpture headed to a gigantic RAVE in New Jersey at Metlife Stadium. The shipment wasn’t without its problems, but as you may have seen on the Shipping Wars episode, I got it there on time. The coolest part was being able to fire up these five stories of flame. The builder and his crew were great guys – all firefighters.

ansport Shares His Top 10 Coolest uShip Loads of 2012 with CTM Hand of Man Nothing makes me happier than an organization that wants to crush cancer – and when they needed me to haul their robotic hydraulic Hand of Man kinetic structure in the process, all the better. This bad boy could lift and crush cars, all in the name of raising money for cancer research. While I had some truck issues, I still got it delivered to Los Angeles.
1927 Caboose I love nostalgia as much as I do a challenge – and this 1927 wood caboose had both. This thing had no wheels, weighed 30,000 lbs., measured 42-feet in length, and frankly, was falling apart. I ended up taking the top off to meet height requirements for the 2,000 mile trip to Utah. At the end of the day, this was a real pain in my caboose.
Sheepsfoot Rollers While this load wasn’t the sexiest, it was certainly one of the heaviest. It took me two trips from a Ritchie Bros. location in Washington due to the sheer weight of these things. Weighing about 12,000 lbs each, these sheepsfoot packer rollers travel behind bulldozers when constructing roads. The best part was getting into the Canadian Rockies, near Grand Prairie, Alberta.

Munson Boat One of the coolest water craft on the market is made by The William E. Munson Company, just north of Seattle. On an episode of Shipping Wars, I hauled one of these spectacular, welded aluminum boats. These high-speed landing craft are top of the line and carry a price tag of $150,000. And this was a small one! The kicker on this load happened on delivery: the new owner was just 17.
Gyro Copter In and of itself, this gyro copter flying machine is a pretty cool load. But what made this particularly momentous was that it was the first shipment I loaded on my new Landoll Trailer. In fact, I got so excited about the trailer, I completely forgot to load the rotor blades of the copter. Fortunately, Landoll called me before I was too far down the road.
Two Army Tanks
I landed two army tanks, the coolest of which was a 1988 British Scorpion Light Reconnaissance tank, often used in films. While these were fun loads, they were also heavy and did not run, requiring me to hire a crane to safely get them on my trailer. I also learned a few things about taking my rig backing through some round-a-bouts in a small Pennsylvania town. Not at all designed for truck traffic! What a day!
My First Shipment They say you never forget your first – and that goes for shipments, too. Mine happened in 2009 when I hauled a boat from Wisconsin to Seattle for $2,000. I remember driving my Dodge being so stoked and excited about getting paid to do this. One thing led to another and I got my big rig so I could haul the real moneymaking stuff – and the rest is history. Sure this load wasn’t in 2012, but it stands out as one of the coolest I’ve ever done because of what it represented.
