FTYSHADES GREY - MODEL - LONDON ENGLAND
Feature by Bryony Dodds
London based Alix Shiftyshades Grey ’s career began back in 2008 when she
entered a Watford hair competition. Although she didn’t win, it was the moment she realised modelling was the path for her.
Six years later, and she has since moved on to modelling for more alternative and creative shoots, where she has been printed among the pages of many successful publications, including Bizarre, a magazine she had always dreamt of working with. Alix initially decided upon a career in modelling as she felt she needed a confidence boost. She has since realised that although, yes, it has done wonders, at times it can also cause her to criticise herself. Despite this, she believes everyone should try modelling at least once in their life, as a hidden talent may emerge.
Underwear is the key thing she feels are required to bring along to a shoot, along with personal makeup in the off-chance that the MUA on set doesn’t have suitable shades to suit skin tones. Latex and unusual colours are also two of this posers favourite things to be incorporated into her images, and with twenty-two piercings and her black pixie cut, Alix is one striking beauty. 2014 brings an exciting year, as she will be heading to New York with an exceptionally talented photographer to shoot some magic.

What preparations do you undertake before a shoot/assignment? If I don't know a photographer or make up artist I usually check references on websites. Just to make sure that it's safe, as I tend to attend shoots on my own. I also try and get my nails right! What do you think makes a good model? I feel everyone can be a model if they want to be. I originally started because I felt I needed a confidence boost. It works but sometimes it does make me judge myself. Vanity and rudeness doesn't qualify anyone to become a good model because I dont feel anyone is better than anyone else. Everyone should try a shoot at some point. You never know if you have a hidden talent that you weren't aware of. Do you have a favourite shoot/assignment that you've been involved in? I am planning a group shoot for models, photographers, designers and make up artists at Murder Mile Studios in London; that should be a challenge for me! I am a massive organisational freak! I like things done perfectly. I have been in a few of these group shoots before and find it's a great way to network. What are the key items you feel every model should have in their kit? Underwear! I once went to a shoot and I needed a pair of knickers to go with an outfit and totally forgot all underwear! I would also recommend taking your make up too in case the MUA doesn't have your colour, for example foundation. What's your favourite modelling style? LATEX!!! And lots of unusual collars to go with creative make up.

Zoe Michelle - Fashion Photographer- London www.zoemichelle.co.uk
My name's Zoé Michelle and I’m a Photography Graduate based in London. As for my genre, at the moment I’d say it was editorial and commercial, but what really interests me is concept and documen I really enjoy location shoots because I get to experiment more with my creativity and work with natura lighting. I’m Greek Cypriot and am keen to pursue a personal project on my family culture, but life gets the way sometimes.
I’ve been interested in photography since I was twelve years old, so I decided to study it at college, rec graduating in Photography BA Hons in London - but have been freelancing since college. Before I eve knew Cindy Sherman existed, I was dressing myself up in everyones clothes I could get my hands on (m my mother's) and taking self portraits; it just came naturally to me. Since then, I use photography as a therapeutic tool, and I try to portray this in my fashion shots by building a good rapport with those I get pleasure of working with. I believe that if you lower your professional guard, your subject and collabora team around you all feel comfortable and therefore achieve happier and more successful shots.
I love all types of photography. I’m a firm believer of trying everything before knocking it, so I try to app within photography too. I’m mainly involved in fashion and editorial, but in talks with some models abo up soon, so that's something I’m intrigued to shoot. I’ve worked for London Fashion week, More Magaz and did a freelance shoot for make up brand Shu Umeura which was fantastic. My dream client would a tie between a feature in Vogue and being exhibited at the Tate Modern.
I prefer working on location, you can be more free with ideas and inspiration around you, it’s always su to change. I can get a new idea in an instant and just have to shoot it to see how it will translate on camera. I think studios are so restrictive unless you have a huge space with a very specific set design y have sought out.
I’ve always been known as the quirky/creative friend and family member. My old friends have had the pleasure of me pestering them to let me at sixteen years old to do their make-up and take photograp them against run down doors and anywhere I could find at the time. My family are lovely and all very supportive of my career, my mum has helped me on plenty set location shoots over the years, once helping me haul a whole bed into the forrest and never complained - she's basically an angel! My grandparents and older generations of my family don’t really “get” what I do, but that's fine.
My favourite location to date would be shooting an editorial in Berlin. It was a test shot that ended up getting published in an online magazine in Berlin - it was all quite last minute actually, I put a casting c Model Mayhem to see if there were any models around who wanted to shoot and I was having such a good time that I forgot to check my inbox until the last day, when I somehow remembered, so got a g shoot done in the graphics filled streets of Berlin! I’m yet to shoot anywhere nicer with models. If I’m do shoot that I’ve casted for, I make sure I prep my mood boards, so this could be anything from opening magazine and taking photos of ideas I saw and liked, or arranging a board on Pinterest, and making it pdf to bring to the shoot. I think visual guidance can help if you get stuck for ideas or if the model isn’t confident with herself.
My favourties inspirations are Sophie Calle, Nan Goldin, Larry Clark, Mario Testino, Tim Walker and Grego Crewdson. All amazing in their own ways.

Alisa Rae - Fashion Model www.facebook.com/alisaraesuicide
Feature by Bryony Dodds
Twenty-one year old Alisa Rae is fairly fresh to the modelling scene, with her career takingoff in late 2012. However in this short amount of time, she has already proven a huge impact. Unlike many in the famously cut-throat modelling industry, Alisa has strong beliefs around what makes a good model. Expressing how, although looks understandably play an impact, she feels the skill to portray emotions and bring feelings to an image are just as significant when it comes to being successful in her chosen industry. Specialising in fashion, you are most likely to see Alisa striking a pose in quirky locations such as old, abandoned buildings, unusual streets and deep within the depths of nature. With her blond pixie cut and tattoos, the model‘s look is undoubtedly fresh, and it’s clear to see she has quite the career ahead of her.

Anglea Kohn - Fashion Designer
Feature by Bryony Dodds
Textiles undergraduate student Angela Kohn is in her final year at Swansea University, however despite her young age, she has already achieved great things. From carrying out internships around the world, to designing for major brands, she has developed a clear insight into how the design world works both in creativity and business. The preparation stage of a new collection is one this designer particularly enjoys, consisting of mostly drawing, Pinterest and visiting outdoor locations and landscapes. All whilst taking inspiration from her favourite designers: Becky Early, C.Neeon and Anthropology. Individuality, assurance and intuition are the key factors she believes creates a good designer, all three which she clearly obtains herself.
Angela keeps a versatile, open mind when it comes to the areas she focusses in, using various processes such as Cyanotype, Photoshop and dark-room. Her current final degree collection is her favourite of the lot, taking inspiration from botanicals whilst using her desired processes and a great deal of experimentation. If you’re looking for a new favourite designer, we’ve found her for you.

Hannah Marie - Fashion Model - Somerset www.facebook.com/hannah.marie.mod
What is your name and where are you based? Hannah Marie. I'm based In Bridgwater, Somerset though I was born in raised In Exeter, Devon for 22 years of my life. How did you get into modelling and how long have you been doing it? My mum is a photographer so I've grew up in front of a camera all my life. It wasn't untill I got to a teenager when I really wanted to do modelling. As soon as I turned 18 I was on purpleport and travelling all over the UK. I only really started pushing my modelling over the past 4 months and I can't believe how far I've come. I love all types of modelling and pretty much do a bit of everything, I like to do different concepts and themes but I only do artist nude and tasteful stuff which is seen more as artistic. Who is your favourite fashion designer and why? I would have to say Coco Chanel and I think this quote says a lot for my reasons why: "In order to be irreplaceable one must always be different" - Coco Chanel Have you modelled for any well known brands or names? I did a photo shoot for a local clothing boutique called Sophia Lilly's Boutique. I am also modelling for a couple other clothing lines shortly: Retro Classic Clothing, Attitude Apparel, Roll The Credits Clothing along with a few others which I'm waiting for confirmation from. Do you prefer working on location or in a studio? I would have to say location. I love doing something different and there is a lot more you can do out of the studio. What do your friends and family think of you being a model? I have a lot of very supportive friends and family who are glad I'm doing something I enjoy. They have said that they are very proud of what I have achieved in a short space of time. I do have a few family members that aren't supportive in any way but to be honest it just pushes me further. What is the furthest place you have travelled for a shoot? The furthest at the moment I would say is Kent. I have been asked to travel to Holland but unfortunately I'm not in the postion to be able to travel that far as I am so busy with UK shoots. What preparations do you do before a shoot? I usually spend the day before prepping. It all depends on the type of shoot and whether it's location or not. I tend to go over the ideas with the photographer via the phone and I usually come up with last minute ideas. What do you think makes a good model? I would say if you are able to think of your own ideas for different shoots. It's all about what images you're looking to get. It's not always about looking good and being pretty. For me it's getting an image that people look at and can either relate to in some way or just think wow.
Photography by Scott Morgan www.facebook.com/pages/Scott-Morgan-Photography/108216789222
What's your favourite shoot you have ever done? I have so many shoots that have been my favourites as I enjoy every shoot. I would say to date would have to be my shoot with Scott Morgan, I had wanted to do a shoot with him for a years, so when I got the chance I took it in a heartbeat. I loved every minute of being in the freezing cold, rain and rolling around in mud! It was a great experience and he is an awesome photographer and taught me a lot of different things on the shoot. I would like to add a big thank you to Scott Morgan, as not a lot of people know this but I'm also a mum of two girls. Just because you're a mum doesn't mean that you aren't able to pursue your dreams, if anything my two girls are my biggest fans! Even though I'm not famous or anything it's great to know that they look at photos of me and tell me how beautiful I am and that they want to model when they are older. It's a great feeling having them both look up to me.

Brook O'Brien - Fashion Photographer www.facebook.com/BrookPHOTOGRAPHY
Many realise their career path later on in life but for Brook O'Brien, her passion began when she was at the tender age of nine years old. After being given a Polaroid by her Granddad, she quickly developed an interest in snapping anything and everything around her, thriving on capturing the special moments within her life.
Make Up Artist: Asha Hussain Models: Fleur 0'Brien and Melissa Kuik
Fast forward a few years, and Brook has since moved onto a DSLR alternative, where she has spent a great deal of time experimenting with both lenses and techniques. Inspiration comes from not only her surroundings, but the knowledge that everyone can appreciate good photography, whatever language they speak, connecting them not through communication, but appreciation. Fashion and beauty photography is currently where this snapper’s passion lies, thanks to both the creativity it can bring, and the stories a single shot can tell. Each moment seized within her camera highlights just how enthusiastic she is about her work.

Emj Webb (Emily Jane) - Norwich - Fashion Model
www.facebook.com/emjwebbmodel
My name is Emj Webb (Emily-Jane) and I'm based in Norwich, Norfolk. I've always had a fascination for models, how their images always seem to capture part of a story. I was asked early last year by a clothing designer if I would model her collection for her website. I agreed and was very happy to be working with her, everything was going well, but unfortunately at the last minute she changed her mind. So, six or so months on I decided to start modelling and get a portfolio together.
Model: Emjwebbmodelling Hair: Jen White Glam Style Hair Design Mua: Amos Corruption make-up/Amy Wilks Fashion designer: Sara Muncila Photography: Louise Poulter photography I manage myself as a freelance model and at the moment my main aim is getting my name out there. Managing myself means I can choose jobs I like and I can agree to things on my terms rather than an agency's. I set up a shoot after popping in to Designers@21 in my home town, Diss, and saw a designer there by the name of Sara Muncila who later designed the 3 pieces for my shoot. I made a plan and set out to find Amos Corruption make-up, Louise Poulter photography and Jen White glam style hair. It was an amazing day with some really nice people and we all got so much out of it which was brilliant. I have only been modelling since December of last year but feel I have achieved so much in that time. I wish to be a alternative and artistic model (with special effects and/or body paint).

I prefer working on location to the studio as I think studio shots can sometimes be repetitive no matter how great you are at posing. When on location I believe it can create great atmosphere and enhance any story line trying to be shown. My family are very supportive of me and do the typical family thing of 'is this person safe', 'make sure you don't forget that', and my friends are always good with ideas for shoots too. We are a creative bunch! When preparing for a shoot I make sure my bag is packed well in advance with props, blankets, lunch, clothes, make up, all the essentials. I also practice poses in the mirror (trying hard to take it seriously and not pull a funny face!) and write down any good ideas that may pop into my head. The morning of the shoot I would eat a good healthy(ish) breakfast to give me lots of energy for the day ahead. I would also drink lots of water leading up to the shoot as this helps keep skin clear and fresh. A good model is one that can move freely in front of the camera, have a big personality and is strong enough and prepared for disappointment as not always will one get the job they hoped for. I don't really have a favourite fashion designer as such, I tend to blend a lot of styles into one and see what happens! You are your own designer in my opinion.

Jeff Tuliniemi - Fashion Photographer - Reading UK www.facebook.com/jtuliniemi - www.jtuliniemi.com
What is your name and where are you based? My name is Jeff Tuliniemi - pronounced Two-Lee-Knee-Amy - It is a Finnish surname from my wife's family which I use for my photographic work. I'm currently based in Reading in the UK, although I'm originally from Boston, US and I've also lived in Helsinki, Finland for a while. I tend to think of myself as someone who works globally because I'm usually travelling to different locations and incorporating some sort of photography into every trip. How did you get into photography and how long have you been doing it? I first started when I was about 15 or so. I was fortunate that my high school had a strong art program that included photography and graphic design. I've been shooting now for a little over 20 years. I still use my first camera, a Canon AE-1 quite a bit. What types of photography do you do? The past few years I've focused a lot of my time on Fashion and Beauty work, but I have spent quite a lot of time with street and travel reportage styles. I like to blend all of the styles together when I can. Have you photographed any well known brands or names? If Tom Ford comes calling I'll certainly be happy to help with his next campaign! I've had the opportunity to shoot lookbooks for Amy Sia the past two years. She's an up-and-coming UK based designer whose work has been sold in some pretty big global retail chains. Do you prefer working on location or in a studio? I prefer location work, especially when there's an amazing location. However, I do enjoy a good day in the studio when there's something interesting or exciting planned.
Model Laura Louise purpleport.com/portfolio/lauralouise MUA Anitka Kwiat www.facebook.com/AnitaKwiatMUA
What areas do you cover and what is the furthest place you have travelled for a shoot? I would be in Tokyo tomorrow if someone called and had an interesting project. When I travel I plan ahead and organize something with people local. I have some shoots planned for Helsinki and Paris in the next couple of months. I'll also be very likely to do something in Boston or New York a little later this year. What preparations do you do before a shoot? For me a typical shoot plan involves a minimum of moodboards, location scouting and shoot planner with logistics. I also tend to plan out what style or essence I want the images to have. Occasionally I may do some test shoots if there is some new lighting technique I'd like to employ. Lately I've also been planning the post production looks I'd like to have and get that sorted out as much as I can to save time following a shoot. Who is your favourite fashion designer and why? Tom Ford is currently my favourite designer. I love the work he does and I feel like he has a real sense for the business side of it all as well. I would love to be invited to shoot his next season. I particularly like what he's done with his scent range over the past 5 years. I've already made my way through a few bottles of Grey Vetiver and need to get some more. The editorial features model Laura Louise, who I've worked with a few times before. She's a lot of fun to work with and takes a lot of her inspiration from Ellen von Unwerth and Helmut Newton. When the idea for this project came about Laura was the first one I reached out to, as I wanted to make sure it had a bit of a carefree and slightly sensuous feel to it. Laura and I had discussed a few editorial concepts a few months earlier and this cowgirl-inspired shoot had been one of them. For makeup and hair I had called in Anitka Kwiat. Being local to me, I tend to bring Anitka in on projects as often as I can find her available to do so because she does such wonderful work. We were quite lucky with the weather that day and pretty much had the park to ourselves.
