MARK BR

Reading UK based Mark Brown’s passion for photography initially began as a simple hobby. Working 9-5 in IT, photography proved to be a more creative, independent career way. Mark thrives on shooting both on location and in the studio, with a portfolio covering the genres of fashion and glamour. He stresses good communication skills are key when it comes to making or breaking a photographer, with Mark also advising that experimentation is also a major necessity for those aspiring towards a similar occupation. Working frequently with both amateur and professional models, Mark has successfully developed his own distinctly bold style. With his sights set on shooting for Victoria’s Secret and Agent Provocateur one day, Mark continues striving forward with his photographic eye.

Herman Chow - Photographer - The Netherlands

www.hermanchow.nl

I am originally from Singapore and moved to the Netherlands in 2000. I started with landscape photography about four years ago. A year later, I moved my focus to fashion photography as it gave me more satisfaction. Photography is not my full time job, it's purely a hobby I do during weekends. Did you always want to be a photographer? How exactly did you get into it? Not really. I was browsing through some fashion magazines one day and was drawn to the beauty of the images. I thought to myself: well, if you can do that, maybe I can do it as well. Have you worked with any well known brands? Who would be your dream client? I have worked with ZARA, H&M, Gaastra, Drykorn and Pepe Jeans. My dream clients would be D&G, Hugo Boss, Valentino, Armani and Kenzo. Do you prefer working on location or in a studio? I would say on location as it gives you more variations. What do your friends and family think of you being a photographer? Well, they have urged me to quit my current job and do this full time !

What preparations do you do before a shoot? Planning the theme/moodboard, getting in touch with model agencies, stylists and makeup artists. What do you think makes a good photographer? It's the connection the photographer has with the model and being able to bring the beauty into an image which makes the readers/clients go “WOW

.

What's been your favourite shoot to date? I did a shoot in London two years ago and one of the images was published on Vogue.it. That was the highlight of my day!

I am a freelance fashion and bridal photographer and I started my business when I was 16 years old. Originally from Plymouth, I work between my home city and London. How did you become a photographer? I have always had a camera but it wasn’t until I had to choose my A Levels that I realised my passion for photography. My dad encouraged me to go for it and I haven’t stopped since. What style of photography do you do? I specialise in fashion, portrait and bridal. Have you worked with any brands? I have worked with upcoming designers and high street brands. Do you prefer working on location or in a studio? I prefer working on location. I like natural light and I like the different ways I can use it in camera. I also prefer it because I can be so creative with different locations and create different moods and concepts. What do your friends and family think of you being a photographer? My family have supported me from the beginning and it's great to have them assure me that what I am pursuing is the right thing to do. My friends over the past year, especially since graduating, have come to realise what I do and have shown their support. I’ve had friends over the years model and assist for me and it's thanks to them where I am heading now.

What preparations do you do before a shoot? I make sure everything is finalised. Each member of the team knows their role and what is needed from them. Mood boards and ideas have been produced and delivered to the team and I have each concept/shot sketched and in order for the shoot. What do you think makes a good photographer? Passion - and patience. What's been your favourite shoot? I don’t have a favourite. I’ve done so many shoots and each one has been completely different. What has been strangely great are shoots that have been a disaster in preparation up until the moment of shooting and some of those shoots have produced my best images! Those shoots are the ones that make me laugh at the end but I wouldn’t recommend it! Who inspires you? Photographer Lara Jade has inspired me from the beginning. Not only for her work but because she is of similar age to me and a female photographer. It's great to be able to relate to her and know that it is possible to make it if you keep pushing. Photographers Norman Parkinson, Paolo Roversi, John French and Brian Duffy inspire me. But music, people and life are what draw inspiration for my work.

L'Art Unique Jewellery, Italy

designed by Laura Ronchi

I am Laura, an Italian jewellery designer, digital media professional and founder of jewellery brand L’Art Unique.

silver ring with rose quartz

The name L’Art Unique comes from the first three letters of my name (L.A.U.) and it reflects the unique style of the jewellery I design. The purpose of the brand is to create unique pieces of jewellery inspired by nature: unique jewellery for unique people. I have always been a creative person and passionate about art and design. After taking two jewellery making courses in London, I completely fell in love with the subject and I found the perfect way to express my creativity. I then decided to develop this hobby further by establishing my brand L’Art Unique. I design silver jewellery with precious stones and pearls. My collections so far include rings, earrings, necklaces and brooches, and I've created a few pieces for a catwalk show. I am always keen and open to discover and experiment with new materials and objects and combine them together. Some of my favourite pieces include silver earrings and rings that are embellished with pearls as they are so simple and romantic. I am also very attached to the garnet set silver ring which was my first project.

silver ring with quartz

I recently discovered eco-silve, a specific type of silver produced from recycled scrap silver which is a good and sensible way to re-use silver scraps.

www.lartunique.com silver ring with moonstone

I had the pleasure of creating a collection for the Italian fashion designer Carlotta Actis Barone for the Vauxhall Fashion Week in 2011. I designed two bespoke silver rings and two silver earrings to be worn by the catwalk models. I mainly showcase in London and Italy for which I tend to promote the brand online through social media and online PR. Being able to market yourself online offers a very powerful source of networking.

Model: Tiina K Photographer: DrOpel Imagery silver earring with turquoise

When I begin preparing work on my next collection I firstly try to find an inspiration, and that often comes from nature and travel. Then I start sketching some pieces and research materials to decide on the best combination of material and design. Once the pieces are ready I enjoy taking pictures of them in a natural environment with a creative style. To be a good designer I strongly believe the combination of simplicity, creativity and originality is a must. A good designer is one who dares to find new design and shape, whilst standing out and avoiding the constricting form of fashion trends. A designer I particularly admire is the German artist Kelvin J. Birk who creates outstanding pieces with stones and silver and gold. The Nordic artist Biorg is another whose unique jewellery design I respect. Those close to me are all very proud and supportive saying that I have always had a creative touch and they are happy to see my ideas coming into a shape.

Imran Mirzan - Fashion Photographer - Bradford My name is Imran. I have been a professional photographer for just over ten years. I am a bit of a gear junkie. I love new technology and enjoy trying out new ways to do things. I am also a designer and am currently designing a new range of luxury camera bags made from high grain leather. Did you always want to be a photographer? I actually wanted to be a doctor when I was young. I studied fashion design and psychology at university and wanted to pursue my career in psychology. My close friend Imran Khan introduced me to photography as he was keen about it. We both used to go out and shoot with his equipment, and it wasn’t long until I purchased my own camera and decided to go full time. My first project was a wedding and I've not looked back since. What genre do you shoot? As a working photographer you don’t always get to choose what you want to shoot. I have done many projects which involve a large team to complete and also smaller one man projects. On my days off I prefer to shoot landscapes. It’s a time for me to appreciate beauty and think about life. The joys of having to wake up before dawn and drive for 2 hours just to get a sunrise! Have you worked with any well known brands? My work has been used as part of Windows desktop themes for Windows, and has had approx. 7 million downloads worldwide. It can be seen here: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/london-architecture-download-theme Which you prefer: location or studio? It depends really. There are times when I need time to myself and prefer to shoot landscapes, but sometimes you get to work with an amazing team and have a great time shooting in the studio, even if you're just shooting cakes or jewellery. What kind of network do you have? A lot of people are happy for me really. I do as much as I can to help others in the industry. Being an honorary member of my local photography club gives me the chance to help out as much as I can; holding free events at my studios or location gives me a great boost in giving back to the community. Have you been to any particularly exotic locations for a shoot? I travelled to Rome for my honey moon which was great! I took my camera and mini tripod to capture some architecture and landscapes while I was there. I also managed to snap up Mont Blanc on the way back. My next travels are taking me to Iceland, to get the amazing landscape and aurora. If I'm lucky I'll snap a polar bear!

How do you prepare for a shoot? I have developed a system which I usually present on talks and training sessions. This is broken into small chunks of the overall shoot. It connects the pre shoot planning, the thinking process and how to achieve the actual shoot. By following this we never miss any vital points and make sure we get what we are out to achieve. What do you think makes a good photographer? At some point or another we all see some amazing things. We have the ability to recognise things that stand out and are different. To see things from a different perspective and record that is the art of the photographer. I believe we all have the abilty to do that, we just don’t know it. I have trained many first time photographers who are now enthusiasts. You can not teach creativity but you can bring it out in people. Do you have an all time favourite shoot? My favourite shoot so far has to be my London one. It was the best Christmas we had. Me, my close friend and my cousin went on a photo walk which took us 3 weeks to plan. All three of us Imrans were out all night and got some amazing images. It was cold and wet but trying to work in the light rain was fun!

I had seen this location a while back and knew that I wanted to save it for something special. It didn't take long for me to decide Sammy Garnett was that person, but I still wasn't sure how best to utilise both the amazing location and her skills as a model. Then i heard Paloma Faith's song 'Only love can hurt like this' and suddenly I knew exactly what I wanted to do. I needed to buy some chains and a swimsuit which led to some awkward stares in Topshop when standing in the queue holding a women's bikini. Especially when I asked if they had a bikini in a size 6, rather than the 8 I had, only for the sales assistant to peer over the counter, check me up and down and say: "A size 6‌.really?!" The shots couldn't have been achieved without the wonderful hair and makeup skills of Catrin Caranza and the incredible help of Raph Carranza who did a great job with the smoke bombs. Then of course the patience, skill, expressions and dedication of SammyG, the model. I recommend working with any of these people at any chance you get because they are phenomenal. We filmed a short video to the song on the day and that can be seen on Vimeo: vimeo.com/94708114

Isla - MUA (Smugworks Make Up Artistry)

I have always been creative and like to do things out of the 'norm' so I jumped at the chance to work with Joe again putting our crazy and creative ideas into life. When he mentioned a sad summery clown theme with the gorgeous Lola Filth confirmed as the model, my creative juices started flowing. I first made the headpiece and thought Orange seemed like a punchy, cheerful enough colour for summer. I also wanted to keep the look soft and feminine as a number of people are not too fond of clowns! I think we managed to make a statement topped off with the fabulous background of the green fields. Working alongside such dedicated, creative and talented people definitely makes this a fantastic career choice. Every shoot is different, nothing goes to plan and there's plenty of clowning around!

Joe - The Photographer (Foto Couture)

Model: Dannii Hollingworth Everyone has their own things thatPhotography: remind them ofNigel the summer. Sunshine, ice cream and the beach to name a few. In general though they’re all happy things and summer is seen as a time of happiness. Every summer has its own story though and I’m sure there are people out there who associate summer with sadness. This is what gave me the inspiration for this shoot. The humble clown. They’re meant to be a symbol for fun and laughter but they always seem to be a little sad and unloved, ssometimes even feared! They play the fool to create laughter for others whilst they hide saddened behind their facepaint: a sunny exterior to hide the rain inside.

Lola - the model (Lola Filth)

Joe and I had been discussing a circus themed shoot for a while and were swapping ideas to and fro. One that cropped up was a mad hatter/circus ring leader look which we both seemed really keen on the idea and set about our doing our bits to get organised. Joe sent out a message saying he’d really like to play around with the clown look, me being petrified of them thought he was joking, which was until the day of the shoot! We all arrived at the location on a beautiful day and set about our work, then it was time for the makeup. I was reluctant to look at my reflection but Isla did a great job. We had a few onlookers over the course of the day, but then again it’s not every day you see a clown in a field!

Maya Brzezinska - Fashion Model - Manchester My name is Maya Brzezinska and I'm based in Manchester.

How did you get into modelling and how long have you been doing it? I started doing some photo shoots for my friends and really enjoyed it, so I decided to model professionally and started to build my portfolio. I have been modelling since January 2014 and I am exclusively signed to PHA Model & Casting Agency. What types of modelling do you do? Editorial, fashion, glamour, beauty, lifestyle, lingerie and swimwear

.

Have you modelled for any well known names? I have modelled for Sassyme online boutique and for many amazing photographers such as Patryk Zarzycki and Eliza Kurowska who helped me to develop my portfolio effectively. As I only recently started modelling, I'm hoping that in the near future I will be modelling for well known brands and my agency will help me to accomplish that. Do you prefer working on location or in a studio? It's hard to choose between location and studio as on location you usually have an interesting background that you can work with, so it is easier to create good shoots. In a studio you have to create the background and show your best attributes to make the photo effective. What do your friends and family think of you being a model? They are proud of me and are very supportive. They love my new photos and look forward to seeing my work. How do you prepare for a shoot? Before a shoot I know what type of photos I will be doing, so I'll be practising new poses and facial expressions so that I'm prepared on the shoot and know what to do. I always listen to the photographer, but I'm trying to put my suggesstions and ideas into the shoot. It allows me to show a bit of my personality, What do you think defines a good model? Definitely confidence and flexibility. It is very important to be keen to learn and use opportunities provided to gain new experience as a model. It's important to remember to have fun because if you don't enjoy the shoot modelling may not be for you. I enjoy every shoot that I'm doing and can't wait for new ones! What's been your favourite shoot to date? My favourite shoot was with Patryk Zarzycki and Anna Martini who were amazing people to work with. We spent an amazing day at Anna's hairdressing studio styling up incredible hairstyles and makeup. But, my recent shoot with Eliza Kurowska was also great as I worked with an amazing team of ladies and we had fun .

Do you have a favourite fashion designer? I have many favourite fashion designers! I'm a shopaholic. I do love the French fashion designer Coco Chanel .

Rowan While - Photographer - Exeter www.rowanwhile.com

My name is Rowan and I am a 24 year old Exeter based photographer, videographer and musician. I work for a tv production company (Pangaea TV) as a motion graphics artist and cameraman/editor. How did you get into photography? I originally started studying film with the intention of focusing on sound, design and composition, then quite by chance I fell into the camerawork and animation side of it a lot more. This led me on to saving up for my first DSLR camera which took me onto photography. What's your style of photography? Personally I wouldn't really know how to categorize my style of photography as it changes with my mood. I love portraits, abstract and fine art photography and I kinda think that mine is a bit of a blend between the three at times. My editing and shooting style is very improvised, I don't know what I am going to make until it is made. Do you have a preference over working on location or in a studio? I have primarily majored on location shoots since starting photography. I love the look of a natural lens flare and nothing quite beats the bokeh that you get from an outdoor location. That being said, I am planning on shooting a lot more in the studio in the near future. The control that you have with the light really opens up a load of cool creative possibilities and experimentation .

How supportive are those close to you? It took them all a bit by surprise to be honest. Shortly after getting my first camera I decided that I wanted to pursue photography, when previously it never really interested me and I was so sure that I would have video as the primary focus. It is so refreshing to work and perfect one frame as opposed to 25 a second (UK video frame rate). I went on a little one day photography course where a group of us got to shoot a couple of professional models. From that day onwards I knew it was something I wanted to take a lot more seriously. I love the process, the banter, the people, and generally the conjoined effort to create some sweet outcomes! Have you been to any particularly exotic locations for a shoot? Nothing really exotic with monkeys and palm trees and stuff! I have, however, shot in a few derelict, run down locations but the most beautiful was probably in Wales. There was this huge lake and squillions of teeny weeny little frogs everywhere! The weather was stunning and it was like being in a dream! How do you prepare for a shoot? Firstly I make sure that the camera bag has the camera, batteries, memory cards, a bit of broken glass to shoot through Photographer Mollie(gives Rose a dreamy effect) and my notebook in it. I normally make a pinterest Assistants board of various and styles Millie techniques Hampson, Laura Bakerthat I like before the shoot, though I rarely actually use it during the shoot but it definitely Stylist and Designer Verity Cooper helps with getting some inspiration and a few ideas before-hand (which usually completely change by the final edit, but none-the-less acts as Models Yasmin Minto, Ona Estape Cortes a bit of creative fuel).

What do you think makes a good photographer? Passion, motivation and confidence. Photography is such a subjective thing like any artform is. For every image that your mates don't like, there will be millions of people in the world that think it is beautiful. It is so easy to upload your work online now and get it seen by different people. I am one of the worst people I know when it comes to self criticism, I always look way too closely at imperfections to the point that it dilutes the positivity that I feel over the entire image, however, after uploading bits of work that I wasn't necessarily overly confident with and seeing people reactions, it really highlighted how other people really do have a different outlook on the outcome when compared to the artist. This alone has been a massive motivation to make more images and just do what I love in the way it comes most naturally. What is there to lose?

Do you have a favourite shoot? I have loved all the shoots I have done. The people I have worked with have been amazing, the stuff that I have learnt, and the challenges we have faced have all contributed to a memory that can't be replaced. Who inspires you? Photography makes everything an inspiration. You start watching how light behaves, how Photographer certain things have certain textures which could be used for something. You keep an eye out Mikel Taylor for quirky locations that could come in use for a shoot Model Michi Bland I have a huge love for graphic design and architectural photography which I think sometimes .

oozes out into my work. Emily Soto, Kitty Gallanaugh, Lee Jeffries, and Dave Mckean are a few people who I can't praise enough.

Nina Pang - Photographer - Manchester ninapang.co.uk

My name is Nina Pang, I'm a photographer based in Manchester, UK. The main genres I focus on are portraits, weddings and corporate events. How did you get into photography? Whilst I have always been passionate about photography, it was during my second year of studying graphic design at the University of Salford where I discovered my strength in photography. I began to incorporate my own photography into my graphic design work and created photo books for my final project. It all started with me helping out friends when they were hosting events, when they asked me to help take photographs for them. After doing this a few times, I ended up getting a break and managed to get work photographing for Selfridges and Lush at some localised events in Manchester. What style of photography do you do? I love trying different styles of photography from fashion to conceptual to wedding. When I started shooting I didn't think too much of it, I simply took photos because I loved the process and the way it made me feel. Have you worked with any well known brands? I haven’t worked with any well known brands but hopefully I'll get to work with some in the future. My dream client would be Lady Gaga, as I really like her sense of style, she is my idol. She always wearing an amazing, unique outfit which I'd love to shoot. What do your friends and family think of you being a photographer? Everyone is supportive about it, though my mum is a bit sceptical. I will prove to her I have made the right path !

Have you been to any particularly exotic locations for a shoot? I did an engagement shoot in Hong Kong last year and I'm planning to do a fashion shoot there in this summer. What preparations do you do before a shoot? Charge my batteries, clear up memory cards and make sure there are batteries in my flashgun.

Photographer Nina Pang

Models Yasemin Gurcan & Melissa Gurcan

What do you think makes a good photographer? I think a good photographer should be able to capture moments which make people feel emotion, and they should communicate well with clients. Who inspires you? Mika Ninagawa, I love how colourful her photographs are. Do you have a particularly favourite shoot? The Blossom Fairy photoshoot (can be found on my website) is my favourite shoot. I love working with a full team and I'm really happy with the final photos.

Andrew Dobell - Fashion Photographer - Surrey www.creativeedgestudios.co.uk

Surrey based Photographer and Illustrator, Andrew Dobell is a family man who's passionate about his creative work. He enjoys shooting many genres, with most of his work entailing weddings, portraits and model portfolios. Andrew's photographic passion lies within the more cultivated style of composite imagery, while his acute attention to detail sees him working regularly with post editing software, Photoshop. Despite long possessing an artistic eye, photography was an accidental success for Andrew: “I kind of fell into it. “ He says. “I always wanted to be a creative of one sort or another. Back in school I wanted to be a comic book artist, which eventually I became. Photography was something that I had been interested in from a young age, but it was at college where I got my first taste for photography that was more just holiday snaps.” Andrew's first photography job came by the way of friends who asked him to shoot their wedding, and the rest, he says, is history. Always encouraged by a challenge, Andrew relishes shooting on location for its immense variety in canvas and backdrop with the unpredictability of available light. The studio environment, however, is more appropriate for his composite work which he says makes post processing a lot simpler. Shoot preparation is a task of paramount importance: “At the very least I do an equipment check to make sure everything is working and ready.” Andrew says. “If it's a shoot I'm organising, then it's a bit more involved and I do like to have a lot of control. I usually have a certain look or idea in mind so I gather reference images and think about what shots I want to get, as well as coordinate the team for the day.” Andrew recognises that, to be a good photographer “Vision, preparation and lots of hard work” must be invested. He goes on to say: “The best photographers in the world won't get noticed if they don't work hard.” Not one to favour a shoot over another, Andrew recalls many he's enjoyed being involved in over the years. “Lots of models and clients have been a dream to work with” he says. Any doubt over a shoot's success Andrew insists leads only back to himself, of any “elements I could have done better or differently. I'm never 100% happy with any shoot I do. I'm certainly my own worst critic, but that just drives me to do better next time.” With inspiration drawing from films to music, artwork and other photographers' works, Andrew's vision to create from the world around him is literally at his finger tips, a passion and creative flare he's gifted to possess.
