Highland Coach Firm Invests for the Future as it Celebrates 25 Years

The north of Scotland’s largest private hire company, which purchased new lowemission coaches as part of a recent £3.5million reinvestment, is celebrating its silver anniversary. Employing 70 people and with a £5 million turnover, D&E Coaches in Inverness has continued to invest for the future having also acquired or refitted six coaches meeting the latest wheelchair accessibility standards. To mark its 25th anniversary, the firm has launched a new website to showcase its full range of services. Owner Donald Mathieson said: “It’s been a busy and eventful quarter of a century, and who would have guessed our anniversary would be reached in the midst of a pandemic? “But with the kids back in class, we’re busy delivering our 35 school contracts for Highland Council and virtually all our staff are back from furlough. “Our anniversary comes at an encouraging time, with reopening of the economy in sight and pent-up tourist demand. We were transporting almost a million people a year before the virus and hopefully we’ll see a return of much of that activity.

“It’s been an extraordinarily difficult time for our industry, with many coach firms going bust, but it has proved the fundamentals of our own business are right. We’re delighted to be able to sustain jobs, with a number of our drivers being with us for 15 to 20 years.”

directors of the reigning Highlands and Islands Family Business of the Year. Daughters Gayle and Amy are respectively operations manager and office manager while their brother Bryan heads up driver responsibilities. In 2018, D&E Coaches diversified by setting up a premium hire car division, D&E Prestige, including a Rolls Royce Phantom, for the chauffeur driven, wedding, sports, social and VIP airport transfer market. Just before the first lockdown, D&E Prestige won the Scottish Wedding Transporter of the Year Award.

Coronavirus wiped out Inverness-based D&E Coaches’ tourism related business, with 6,000 cruise line passenger bookings disappearing almost overnight. However, being able to continue operating the Inverness-Ullapool Citylink and its Highland Council school contracts proved vital.

The strength shown by the firm in difficult times has been lauded by Fergus Ewing MSP, Scottish

The business was launched on 25 March 1996 by Donald and his wife Elizabeth after the couple got a £1,000 loan from his father to buy a minibus. The company HQ opened on the Longman Industrial Estate in 2006, where it has four yards spanning more than two acres.

Government Minister for the Rural Economy and Tourism. Mr Ewing said: “I had the pleasure of speaking to Donald last September to discuss the impact of the Covid pandemic and was struck by his resilience in the face of the biggest crisis facing business in our lifetimes. “He and his wife have, through hard work and commitment, established a major business serving the Highlands and, in particular, helping children get to and from school. I pay tribute to their endeavour and congratulate them on their 25th anniversary.” For more information about D&E Coaches, visit www.decoaches.co.uk

Elizabeth and Donald Mathieson celebrate 25 years of D&E Coaches – and look forward to another successful 25 years in business.

Today the firm has a fleet of 64 coaches and commands 80 per cent of the Highland private hire market – and staying as a family business and retaining the personal touch has been the key to its success. The couple’s two daughters and their son are now

Coach Touring I The Coach Tourism Association

The Coach Tourism Association When do you think we will see a recovery to something like pre-pandemic operations if ever?

tourism and leisure sector. Do you anticipate a significant increase in prices for groups?

Depending on the vaccine rollout, things will start to improve later this year and hopefully pre-pandemic business levels will return from mid-2022 onwards.

This all depends on prices charged by suppliers; we are all in a very competitive market and everything possible will be done to minimise any price increases.

How do you think the industry will evolve? Will we ever see 50 people on a coach again?

Robert Shaw Chair of the CTA We ask Robert what he thinks the future holds for Coach Tourism

When did you become the Chair of the CTA? December 2020 How long have you been in the industry, and what is your background? I joined the family firm in the early 1980’s after graduating from The Cass Business School in London.I have been involved in all aspects of coach and tour operating including the development of UK and European holiday programmes and the operation of a chain of travel agencies. Along with my brother John and inspirational colleagues, I have taken the company into the reader offer, air holiday and group markets and overseen the development of a modern coach fleet. I have a broad experience of E commerce and social media marketing. As a board member of the CTA for over a decade, I am interested in seeing the coach holiday market flourish and fellow coach tour operators prosper.

How will or does Brexit affect coach travel?

In the short term, there will be a focus on domestic tours with European returning from 2022. Beyond this, groups will be looking at trying new experiences which it is hard for them to organise themselves. Hopefully social distancing will be a thing of the past soon and we will see 50 passengers on a coach again.

The situation is a little uncertain currently as very few coaches have travelled into Europe since 1 January 2021. However, the Interbus agreement is in place allowing restriction-free access to Europe and we don’t foresee too many difficulties arising. There may even be a bonus – if the £ gains in strength against the Euro, holidays to Europe will be better value for money.

What support has the industry had from the government? Was it sufficient?

What kind of innovations are you seeing that will help to evolve coach travel?

The picture with government support has been mixed. The furlough scheme and government-backed loans have been a lifeline for many businesses but the ongoing overhead costs, including financing previous investments in new coaches, has continued to be an enormous burden. CTA has been working hard alongside other trade bodies and the Tourism Alliance to press the coach operators’ case to government and ensure that we are recognised for the vital role we play in the

Increasing comfort levels on vehicles; higher hotel standards; vehicles becoming more environmentally friendly; and passengers being more aware of just how ‘green’ it is to travel by coach. Are groups concerned about their consumer rights, for example, financial stability and refunds? Yes – and rightly so. It is essential that groups can book knowing their money is safe and the operator

conforms with industry codes of conduct relating to refunds and public liability insurance cover. Many are now making sure that operators are ABTA or BCH members before they book. Are the number of drivers available a concern? Will they return to the profession? It has been increasingly difficult to attract new drivers to the industry in recent years due to the variety of different driving jobs on offer. However, many experienced drivers have missed the industry in the last 12 months and prefer being a tour driver to say delivering parcels so are looking to return. We must all make it more fashionable to be a coach driver by learning to respect the profession more. Do you have any other concerns? Or are you able to envisage a bright future and if so what timescales are realistic? It may be that the operation of UK hotels will be affected by immigration policies post Brexit. Confidence is key to a bright future – if the vaccine rollout is successful we are hopeful that business will start to recover from the third quarter of 2021 and this will then continue. Groups loved coach tours pre-pandemic and there is no reason why this won’t continue. Many customers have funds available to travel and this will fuel high levels of pent-up demand. What do you think are the lessons of the last 12 months? Keep the faith and hope that history never repeats itself.

Tom van der Leij is an Amsterdam born and raised photographer, travel editor and travel consultant. Tom's first loves are photography and traveling, and his vivid photos and stories are widely published in diverse travel magazines. Every fall and winter, he organizes private adventurous trips for couples and families to South Africa— his second homeland. He also offers photography workshops and photoshoots in and around Amsterdam, including in the Dutch tulip fields. See: tomvanderleij.com In 2013, Tom co-founded Toms Travel Tours, a professional high-quality private guiding company based in Amsterdam. The company organizes custommade tours throughout The Netherlands and Belgium. Among the many tour options, travellers can spend a couple of hours with an art historian in one of the main museums, cycle around greater Amsterdam and find off-the-beaten-track spots, explore the genuine Dutch countryside, or go on a unique mud walk.

See:www.tomstraveltours.com

Quotes: “I’m a born and raised Amsterdammer. While I love to travel to exotic locations abroad, I also deeply appreciate the small things in my own little country. I love to show my foreign guests the beauty of Amsterdam and the rest of the Netherlands.” “It doesn’t sound appealing to many people: walking for hours in mud up to your knees to a distant island. But every person I know that has ever done it agrees that it’s the best Dutch nature activity there is. It almost feels like you’re playing God; walking over the bottom of the sea, the dry Wadden Sea (UNESCO world heritage site) to a beautiful island in the north.”

What to expect on a mud tour?

What is a mud walk? It’s basically as it sounds. You walk from a location on or near the Dutch mainland across the Wadden Sea at low tide to a point on the other side of the sea, which can either be an island shore or a boat that takes you to the final destination.

There are different mud walk routes and they all start in the northern province of Friesland and Groningen. My favourite route is to Ameland island where you walk from the Dutch mainland to the island. You need to be between 1465 years old, in good physical condition, able to walk in thick (sometimes slippery!) mud for approximately 4 to 5 hours. You need special surf shoes to protect your feet against the shells on the bottom. The season runs from the end of May until the end of September. We can also do shorter routes of about 2-3 hours, possibly as a day tour from Amsterdam –

Want to join a special long mud walk to Schiermonnikoog from 18-20 June 2021? This island does not allow cars, has the widest beaches of Europe and is a national park; it’s considered the most beautiful nature area of The Netherlands. You will stay in a Fawlty Towers look-a-like hotel; nothing pretentious, but definitely a pleasant atmosphere. For June, there are a limited number of places available. To plan a mud walk for another time period, please get in touch. Something else? You can also book a family trip with Toms Travel Tours to the north, focussing on Friesland, Schiermonnikoog and the North Holland province—without the mud walk! www.mudwalks.com Contact: reservations@tomstraveltours.com All pictures copyright Tom van der Leij

PIGLET CELEBRATES AWARD FOR BELOVED STEAM TRAM

it to Grosmont that September.

North Yorkshire Moors Railway’s Head of Traction and Rolling Stock, Paul Middleton, aka Piglet, is celebrating after the 131year-old Belgian steam tram that he and his brother bought four years ago and restored, has been named the clear winner of the 2021 Heritage Railway Association’s Steam Railway magazine award, attracting over 40% of the votes.

“It was completely by chance really,” says Piglet. “I’d actually gone over to Middleton Railway to look at another locomotive. While there, I saw Lucie and asked, ‘What’s that strange thing then?’ and they said: ‘You can buy it off us if you want’.”

After a working life that saw it operate everywhere from zinc mines to sugar factories, Lucie was restored by Dorothea Restorations in 1988, and ran at Peak Rail, before moving to the Middleton Railway in Leeds, in July 1995. It was withdrawn in 2000 and remained in storage awaiting overhaul until 2017 – the year that Piglet and his brother, with support from their parents, purchased Lucie and moved

The heritage railway attraction operates full-size steam and diesel passenger trains along the five and a half miles of line from Norden to Corfe Castle and down to the Victoria seaside town of Swanage. The line has stations at Corfe Castle and Harman’s Cross as well as a halt at Herston, on the outskirts of Swanage. There are refreshment buffets at Norden and Swanage stations with picnic tables at most of the stations so you can soak up the atmosphere while enjoying a picnic. Their station shop at Swanage is well stocked with

He adds: “At first I knew nothing about its history but was blown away by this unique looking locomotive and I thought: ‘I would like to restore this locomotive as it would look amazing running along the line at the NYMR’.” Now the restoration is complete, Piglet has been invited by the Musée du Transport Urbain Bruxellois (Brussels Tram Museum) to take Lucie over for the museum’s 40th anniversary in 2022, returning it to its ‘birthplace’ for the first time since 1897.

No group visit to Bournemouth, Christchurch, Poole or Dorset will be complete without a journey on the Swanage Railway. They offer organised groups single or return journeys, so you can combine the visit to their railway with time at Corfe Castle, Swanage and its beautiful beaches or a boat trip from Swanage pier. Looking for something special for your group, why not arrange a meal on their premium dining train, The Wessex Belle, or perhaps afternoon tea in the historic observation car. For a lighter meal option, they offer a range of picnic boxes and drinks that your guests can eat at their table during the journey. Whatever the composition of your group, the Swanage Railway will provide interest and enjoyment for all. Optimistic Outlook for 2021 Welcome to The Directory 2021, what a year 2020 was.

What I really want to concentrate on is all the positive news, there are vaccines that are highly effective and it will be a matter of just weeks before the rollout begins and once the most vulnerable members of society have been inoculated the restrictions on the rest of us can be relaxed significantly, and as more and more of us have protection we can get out and about again and enjoy what this country has to offer. One thing that has become apparent during this pandemic is that we didn’t realise how much we would have missed all the great places and things to do there are in our own back yards so to speak, it’s never been truer you don’t know what you’ve lost until it’s gone. It was great to hear that a recent report highlighted the rise of the domestic “staycation” driven by travel restrictions and consumers less willing to go abroad meant that both Butlins and Centre Parcs saw increases of more than half (51%) year on year in the height of the summer and August was a bumper month with amusement parks such as Thorpe Park and Alton Towers up 29% and museums a whopping 55%.

In the next few months, many of us will be planning and booking our travel arrangements ,this will be the year of recovery for Coach Tourism with many of us deciding to take excursions and holidays closer to home now that we’ve fallen back in love with what’s on offer in The Great British Isles.

Here at Coach Touring, our thoughts are with all Coach Operators whose livelihood has been severely affected and unfortunately some will not have survived, but one thing is for sure, a more resilient professional group of travel professionals would be difficult to find anywhere else, and for this reason we know that it won’t be long before they’re back on the road again. Keep safe, Nigel

Heart of England The Heart of England has always been a booming economic centre, starting with the wool trade in the Middle Ages which enriched Coventry, before becoming the pivot of the Industrial Revolution fuelled from the Black Country, it still maintains a largely unspoilt region found to the north and west of Birmingham, which means that there’s plenty of things to do both outdoors and indoors, walking, cycling, or maybe a boat trip on the canals (there are more in this area than there are in Venice, although we haven’t spotted any gondola’s yet), visiting stately homes and gardens, why not visit Croome Court once a secret wartime airbase and now a visitor centre. Outside is the grandest of English landscapes, ‘Capability’ Brown’s masterful first commission, with commanding views over the Malvern’s. This is arguably the most medieval of the UK’s regions, with great castles such as that at Warwick and literary trails around Stratford-Upon-Avon, home of the greatest writer in the English language, William Shakespeare.

London The world’s greatest city (although we would say that, perhaps we’re a little bias) needs little introduction, other than to say that whatever type of day out, short break or holiday you are after, if you can’t find it here it doesn’t exist. From free museums, art galleries and world-class theatre, iconic landmarks Big Ben, The Tower of London, Buckingham Palace, the London Eye, The Shard, we could be typing all day, with foodie delights, serious shopping and thanks to the abundance of greenery and outdoor activities, London has become the world's first National Park City. Why not do a bit of boating in Hyde Park or deer-spotting in Richmond Park? There’s history in abundance, from the early Middle Ages to be seen at Westminster Abbey and throughout the City of London where parts of the Roman Wall still stand — through to Regency and Georgian London magnificently preserved in the West End and around Regent’s Park. The North East A region that combines sandy beaches, castles and portcullises, miles and miles of natural terrain that's divided and dominated by Hadrian’s Wall, but also includes 3 vibrant and cosmopolitan cities and of course the birthplace of Ant and Dec who it would appear we can't get enough of. The magnificent Durham Cathedral, on a huge promontory overlooking the River Wear, is held by many to be the finest example of Norman architecture in the land, and of course a more modern masterpiece The Angel of the North whose home is in Gateshead.

The North West The Industrial Revolution created mighty cities thanks to textiles and shipping which are now home to arguably the greatest football teams the world has ever seen, well at least the most successful and lucrative. It doesn't come as a surprise to learn that this is the 3rd most densely populated area in the United Kingdom after the South East and Greater London, there's something for everyone here, iconic cities that are as famous for their music scenes as their grand industrial buildings and museums. Hear The Beatles resonate from street corners in Liverpool and the Stone Roses and Oasis rock in fashionable Manchester and now also home to Media City. For nature lovers, landscapes filled with lakes, estuaries buzzing with birdlife, and there's the Lake District another oasis of tranquil beauty.

Wales From valleys that are synonymous with mining to the mountainous national park at Snowdonia and glorious sandy beaches that are among the longest in Britain. Interested in medieval history? The cathedral at the UK’s smallest city, St David’s, is a must. After great castles with battlements and drawbridges? It’s little wonder that Wales is also known as “the castle capital of the world”. Try Conwy, Caernarfon, Caerphilly and Beaumaris. For coastal holidays, you have more than 100 beaches dotted along the coastline, with 33 Blue Flag beaches. From Swansea and the Gower Peninsula to Pembrokeshire and Anglesey, Wales’s sandy beaches and coastal and cliff-top walks attract beach-lovers and ramblers from around the world. And with traditional Welsh villages in the north such as Betws-y-Coed, the breathtaking Brecon Beacons and traditional seaside resorts at Rhyl, Prestatyn and Colwyn Bay, it is clear that Wales is wide open and ready to greet you and your groups.

Scotland

Scotland Surely the most geographically diverse region in the whole of the British Isles, Scotland is a mistshrouded land of mountains and fells, lochs and lakes, the Highlands and the Islands and with golf-courses, castles and beaches galore. Sporting tours — think golf, fishing, falconry and so much more — are an emerging theme, as is cuisine — Scotland’s food and drink offering is now truly world-class with provenance and sustainability envied the world over.
